"Issue #33: Hurt Me! Beat Me! Just Please Don't Leave Me!"

Thank you all for your patience while I worked on this! It's the longest issue of PATFW to date, so I hope you understand why it took me so long to produce. At the current pace it seems like issues will come out about every three weeks (or a little more), which is a bit funny to me. I called them "issues" as a reference to comic books and now look where I am. Full circle.

The boys are having a rough time of it, though, unfortunately. If it wasn't already abundantly clear, Cormorantpaw has some pretty severe abandonment and trust issues, which led to him keeping secrets from Pinepaw out of fear that he'd be left once again. But it's hard for Pinepaw to see that perspective when he's just lost his sister, and thinks that she possibly could've been saved... bad situation all around.

At least Thrasher is finally dead! That's worth celebrating, right? Both he and Crow died from a kick to the head, by the way, and the deer who killed Crow is Wild Rose's son Hyssop.

woah!!!!! finally done,,, a large chunk of fanart for @barrenclan's comic! i wanted to start doing digital again and draw some kitties,, so. that's what it resulted in. anyway the story is great!? it had me soo involved in all of the characters, i had to hold myself back from drawing more (ok but really, these were so fun to do). 10/10 definitely worth your time.

i think in an anthro/human au she'd be like... the loud fire-and-brimstone preacher that everyone's just kind of decided to ignore while simultaneously being arguably the most competent one there. like she can cure any disease you're likely to get but she'll tell you you're going to hell in the same breath. i hope that makes sense i'm running on like one hour of sleep rn

also i imagine her with a southern accent. no one else has a particular accent but she's southern because i mean. of course she is

Typing BarrenClan Cats in OPS

i'm rereading @barrenclan so I thot this might be fun :P

Right now, I'm only on chapter 15/16 I think? But I think I have enough info (plus prior knowledge) to do a quick typing on the slug sibs

Pinepaw: Pinepaw is definitely a gatherer, though I don't know if I'd say he's overdoing chaos...he doesn't have a need for new things as much as he has a need for individuality.

This might not SEEM like the case since he's not an individualist per say, but when reading the comic you can tell he goes away from the tribe and focuses on his wants, he is looking for answers not FOR the tribe but purely because he wants to know.

This can be seen in many scenarios, but mainly in him wanting to leave the group. Someone who's tribe over self and an organizer would prefer to stick to traditions, like Cootstorm, they would hear the cries of the past barrenclan warriors and want to stay, because that is what the tribe and tradition wants.

This leads me to either INTP or INFP, though I think he's more of an INFP. He doesn't care as much about efficiency, even if he is logical he prefers to think about his values

Also idk if it's necessary to say ne>se he's clearly intuitive, moreso coming to as many conclusions as possible instead of paying close attention to the surroundings

ALSO Consume>Sleep>Blast>Play is my best guess but I'm not too sure

Fe is definitely her main function, the entire story she's battling with herself over gaining approval with her mentor, meaning she neglects a cay like Pinepaw who is more individualistic and doesn't really want to partake in tribe beliefs. She definitely gets healthier as the story goes on, but she's a good example of a tribe savior being selfish.

As for whether she uses si or ni....I'm gonna go with ni, she isn't tied to si but there also isn't much showing her ni so I skipped over to the third function and (imo) she's def se>ne so. Ni it is!

Barrenclan/Cavernclan crossover drabble featuring Pinepaw and his ghost friend!

“So, how did you die?”

Beetlethorn rose his head, cocking it slightly to look at the young tom. Pinepaw had always bombarded him with questions like these, however his death had been…..personal. One he was never comfortable sharing when they first met.

However, that was moons ago. Moons since Beetlethorn found himself in the wasteland that was Barrenclan’s territory. Moons since he scared the young apprentice with his presence. Moons since they became each other’s first friend.

Beetlethorn licked his chest dismissively, “Pine, I’ve told you-“

“I know, I know-“ Pinepaw interrupted, waving his paw with each ‘I know’, “But that was moons ago! When I was a stranger to you. You know so much about me but….”

Beetlethorn rose to his haunches, he towered over the apprentice by just a head.

“I feel like I don’t know anything about your life….before you came here.” He nosed some of the brush out of the way to search for some root Cootstorm sent him here to find. Beetlethorn had followed, Pinepaw was the only cat who could see him.

Well, that was a lie. One of the elders, Nightberry Beetle recalled, could see him as well. Though he’d steered clear of her after she spotted him. Last thing he wanted was the rest of Cavernclan knowing he was there.

The ghostly warrior looked at his friend. In his maw was the root they came for, but it didn’t seem like he planned on heading back soon. Not until Beetlethorn told him his backstory. The patched tom let out a sigh, and patted the spot beside him with his fluffy tail. Pinepaw kicked up the dirt from under him from how fast he ran to settle down beside his friend, dropping the root at their paws.

Beetlethorn couldn’t help but crack a smile, “So….what do you wanna know?”

“Everything!”

That narrows it down, the warrior thought. Guess he should start at the beginning.

“Well, I was from this clan far FAR away from here. Cavernclan it was called-“

“Was?”

Beetlethorn cuffed him on the ear, “Don’t interrupt.” Pinepaw seemed to clasp his jaw shut to avoid interrupting again, “The camp was like someone took a chunk out of the ground, with tunnels dug to get in and out of the camp.” He demonstrated by digging a small hole into the dirt.

“My father was the deputy, Thorntuft….” Beetlethorn’s ears flattened as he solemnly recalled his dad, “he was a good cat…”

Pinepaw looked at his paws, shuffling like a kit who was being scolded, “What….happened to him?”

Beetlethorn felt his pelt bristle, “He was murdered….by his former apprentice believe it or not…..who was also MY mentor.”

“I used to look up to him, my mentor. Starclan proclaimed him to be a savior. A cat who would be the hope for all clans.” He raised a paw to the sky, the sun shone through his transparent form. His whiskers twitched in recollection, “..but he failed them.” His paw fell back to the ground with a soft plop. His glare fixed on the dirt.

Pinepaw blinked, Beetlethorn looked no older than him and yet he spoke with the bitterness of a warrior hardened by life. But in a way, he understood. If Cootstorm had turned around and killed Slugpelt, he’d be mad too. Though, he didn’t look up to his mentor like his friend did.

But even with the little he was told, so many theories he had crafted were debunked. Beetlethorn wasn’t some past Roseclan warrior. Nor was he a secret kit Rainhaze ended up having after he left. In their place sprouted new ones.

Was Beetlethorn named Beetlethorn after his father?

Was his mentor jealous of Thorntuft? Is that why he killed him?

Or was Thorntuft not good like his friend believed. Perhaps he was projecting, but Pinepaw didn’t have good experience with fathers.

It was then the tom noticed, Beetle hadn’t spoken in some time. The silence was so thick you could slice through it. He tentatively poked his friend’s shoulder with a paw, hoping to get the rest of his backstory out of him. He was pushed gently by the warrior’s shoulder

“Sorry just….thinking. Anyway….back to the story. My mentor, Rustheart at the time, became deputy in my father’s place. Don’t even know if I should call him my mentor at this point- everything I learned was from my family and another warrior in Cavernclan…..you’d like her.”

“I became a warrior before I should’ve. Rustheart became leader and his first course of action was making me a warrior, I think he just wanted to get rid of me.”

Pinepaw couldn’t imagine becoming a full medicine cat at his age, he barely knew how to treat wounds without Cootstorm shouting in his ear what he was doing wrong. But being a warrior? Fighting? At such a young age?

He looked over the fallen tom, reminiscing on their first encounter. One of the first things he noticed was how young the tom was, and yet he was a fully named warrior.

He noticed Beetlethorn’s tail curled around him protectively. He had a habit of “protecting” him when he really didn’t need to. Maybe Beetlethorn saw himself in Pinepaw. Maybe he didn’t want him to get hurt like he did. Guess that would explain why he was so judgmental of Cootstorm. Pinepaw had assured his friend that despite her nasty attitude, she would never lay a claw on him. At least, he liked to think she wouldn’t.

“Ruststar made a lot of bad decisions..” oh right! Backstory! “His choices costed so many cats their lives. Those who didn’t die left to find sanctuary…..so,” he sighed, his face was riddled with guilt, “I tried to poison him.”

“YOU WHAT?!” Pinepaw reeled away from Beetlethorn, pelt bristling in shock. He tried to kill his leader? Sure he was making bad decisions and harmed cats but, murder? Was that really the best option he could think of.

“I’m not proud of it either!” The white tom scrunched his muzzle in frustration, looking back to his paws. He looked so much like a kit caught in the fresh kill pile, “But obviously, it didn’t work.” He nodded to his open wound on his neck.

In death, the wound didn’t go away. He had asked if it hurt and he said no, it was just numb to him. Almost as if it knew it was being talked about, blood trickled from the wound and down Beetlethorn’s shoulder. He didn’t acknowledge it.

“Did..” Pinepaw stuttered, “Did he kill you?”

Beetlethorn’s posture slumped, “Yes…..he. He did.”

For once, Pinepaw was at a loss for words. What could he say in this situation? ‘Sorry your mentor killed you’? But sitting there dumbfounded wasn’t much better!

Instead, Pinepaw simply rested his head on the warrior’s shoulder, gaze fixed on a nearby rock. With everything he was just told, he didn’t really feel like looking at Beetlethorn. He felt the same fluffy tail curled at his paws pull him close, as if giving him a silent thanks.

They sat there, neither knew for how long, in complete silence. The fallen warrior and the apprentice who befriended him.

First blood.

It'll become clear soon, but not all of Defiance is here - there are around 100 members in the group in total, and only about twenty here today. But it seems like a lot to the cats.

Also, Prowl did kill Mallowstar by snapping his neck, but I understand it may not be obvious in the art because I didn't want to look at pictures of broken necks for reference. Regardless he died near instantly.

He did his best.

"Issue #34: Sunset Days"

Here we are! The start of something great and terrible! Defiance has arrived, and we have no choice but to wait and see if anyone makes it out alive.

I never quite got to work Hush Puppy's fate as much into the comic as I wanted, so I'll go into it a little more here. She did starve to death, like Egrettail says. As Thrasher put more time into "training" his growing kits and less into hunting, Hush Puppy got less food and gave up a lot of her own for the kittens. A combination of that and pure stress just sapped everything from her.

Also, I feel this may need to be said; yes, the dream canine with blue eyes is Rainhaze, not Prowl, but Pinepaw doesn't know that. It is dramatic irony.

"Issue #29: We're Not So Different, You and I"

It's been so long since I've gotten to focus on Asphodelpaw! I really missed her. She's been going through a lot in the background of recent issues, and it's nice to bring that all to the forefront. Just for clarity's sake, Asphodelpaw is aromantic and asexual and not interested in any of all that, thanks.

Sorry if there were any Plumstripe fans holding out hope she'd be a decent teacher, haha. With her and Beeface, I wanted to create a parallel between differing styles of mentorship abuse. While Beeface is loud and aggressive, Plumstripe is dismissive and subtle; both bad for their apprentices.

It was pretty funny to draw baby Pinepaw again. Where is his quiff?!

"Issue #27: Little Paws Take Little Steps"

I'm glad I was finally able to call back to Issue 8, and see where Daffodilpaw has been mentally since then. As with all our apprentices, she's done some growth since then, and Slugpelt's conversation with her kids in Issue 18 affected her deeply. A concept I think is interesting but not explored enough is when someone is fully aware they have a problem, or could possibly fall into something bad, but still know they might be unable to resist it. That's what Daff is dealing with.

We've also got a follow-up on Mallowstar's discussion with Cootstorm in Issue 6. Seems like he's gotten more steadfast in his plans since then! Blacknose is a big influence on him, since she's a stone-cold badass. She doesn't take shit from anybody.

I always love drawing the BlackMallow kittens. That's a given. It was briefly mentioned in Issue 25, but Cormorantpaw loves kids, and he's great with them. He treats them with the kindness he wishes he'd been given.
