ok. here it is. the longpost i've been too lazy to actually make until just now.

so, here's what happened. the google algorithm sometimes pushes links to articles it thinks you'll like on the mobile homepage. unfortunately, google knew enough about me to put this hellish article onto my screen:

read that headline. then read it again. really, really stare at it. stare into the abyss. eventually, it will stare back. it'll whisper in your ear: "the heathers reboot was good, actually."

i read the article, incredulous. but, to my surprise... the author had somewhat of a point? it's been five years since paramount unceremoniously aired the show in october of 2018 after its premiere was delayed at least twice due to mass shootings. then after another mass shooting occurred before the final two episodes of the ten-episode long season were supposed to air, paramount hastily aired a heavily edited ninth episode and scrapped the tenth entirely. as far as i can tell, the show is not available to be streamed freely on any streaming site (not even paramount's own paramount+), though you can rent or buy it from amazon prime. maybe the author was right. maybe it was time for a rewatch and reconsideration. i wouldn't even have to spend any money; i archived all ten episodes of the show onto one of my external hard drives back in 2018, so i plugged 'er in, drank a bit of fireball, and clicked play.

after episode five, i gave up. i couldn't stand it any longer. i slammed my laptop shut and went to bed.

needless to say, i have thoughts.

right off the bat, here's the biggest thing. i wish to god that someone other than the miserable pile of sweaty skin that calls himself jason micallef had been in charge of this show. it might not have saved it from its fate, but maybe it would have been at least watchable? a modicum more entertaining? when the show was originally announced, leslye headland (who would later go on to create russian doll) was attached as showrunner. later, it was announced that micallef would be showrunner instead, although headland directed the pilot and executive produced the series.

in my honest opinion, if leslye headland had remained in creative control, this would have been a much different - and, in my opinion, better - show.

i can't help but wonder how heathers (2018) would have turned out if she had stayed at the helm. would it have marred her career so badly that netflix would have never agreed to produce russian doll? would she still be notable enough to be given charge of the newest disney plus star wars show? perhaps her decision was for the best. perhaps she knew there was no saving this project, try as she might.

and people tried!!!! during my rewatch, i was enamored by the production design and slick lighting and cinematography. some of the costume design hasn't aged well, but when it hits, it hits. i have to give credit where it's due: it is a beautifully shot and designed piece of television.

if only its actors had given half as much of a shit.

grace victoria cox (veronica) and james scully (j.d.) both attempt to replicate their predecessors' cool sense of disillusion and disenchantment in their roles, but both just come off as totally and completely bored in every scene. j.d. is supposed to be darkly charismatic, but scully has the charm of a plank of rotting wood. they lack the spark of chemistry to get the audience to feel invested in their relationship. without convincing leads to anchor it, the show has to depend upon its titular heathers.

i am, of course, in no way biased at all, in any shape or form. just saying. but one thing the article gets right is that melanie field’s performance as one miss heather chandler shines. field is fucking brilliant and her screen presence is formidable. she makes the most of every line she's given, and is at turns, ruthless, hilarious, and even (gasp) sympathetic. i am so glad she’s been booked left and right in tv shows (such as amazon's a league of their own, a spin-off with much more respect for its source material) that showcase her immense talent since whatever the fuck happened here. but i'm not biased!!!

juan barquin, the author of this article argues that viewers and critics alike both misunderstood heathers (2018). micallef's brilliant satirical messaging flew right over our heads. it had a message, goddamnit, and the misinformed masses closed their eyes and ears because they didn't want to hear it. it almost reminds me of the starships troopers discourse that is currently enveloping the app formerly known as twitter. starship troopers was nearly universally panned upon its release but is now recognized as a prescient satirical romp that targets jingoism, nationalism, and the culture of forever wars. we didn't get it back in 1997, but we do now. unfortunately, this is not the case with paramount's heathers.

the main cause of all the brouhaha around heathers (2018)'s release, barquin says, is because of its "shameless criticism of American culture, the prioritization of guns as a faulty means of defense, and the educational system’s blatant ignorance around the actual needs of students." which, sort of? it is true that a rash of killings (such as parkland and the pittsburgh synagogue shootings) spurred paramount's decision to nuke the show from existence. the show does, in fact, directly address and involve such matters. unlike the movie, the show concludes with westerburg high blown to pieces and its students all dancing in a prom in heaven. which.... yeah. you can see why that wouldn't have played out well.

(it's worth noting that daniel waters, the screenwriter behind the REAL heathers, originally planned for the movie to end this way as well. but the suits at new world studios said that audiences wouldn't like it. reluctantly, he complied.)

and i do have to admit, there are moments of brilliance. westerburg's school shooting drills involve the drama teacher storming through the halls shooting students with silly string. if you "die", you get to go to "heaven" (a brightly lit room stocked with snacks). the survivors are ushered into the dark, cramped gymnasium and complain about how all the cool kids are in heaven now. teachers' desks are stocked with firearms, because as we all know, of course, the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a teacher with a gun. it's so absurd that it works.

but for the most part, the writing is sorely lacking. it seems like the folks in the writers' room spent hours sitting around the table trying to one-up each other with quippable quips, meme-able dialogue, and banter that matched the panache and dry wit of waters' screenplay. but what we got instead was "HAHHAHAHAH, QUEEF!" it's bad. it's so, so bad. the author's claim that “[t]he show rather impressively matches the film’s comic sensibilities with consistently funny episodes that are as pleasantly cruel as they are scathingly satirical” falls flat because, for the most part, the shows satire isn’t at all scathing or sharp.

there were so many moments of the show where i felt my whole body just light up with rage. it made me just so ANGRY because i could see shells and fragments of a better version of this show peeking through. instead, what we got is a show that made alt-right chuds say this:

i think the most offensive part of the whole article, though, is barquin's attempt to liken the show to bottoms. if anything, i'd argue that bottoms works better as a spiritual successor to heathers than the rebooted heathers itself! bottoms succeeds in every way that heathers (2018) fails: punchy and quotable dialogue, characters who manage to be both archetypal and multidimensional, all set in an exaggerated and heightened sense of reality that still feels lived in and real. most importantly, all of bottoms’ actors are firing on all cylinders; in heathers (2018), most of the leads are just there to get paid. i could go on, but that's a whole other post.

frankly, it's kind of incredible that paramount launched this show as the flagship of their new tv network alongside yellowstone (which is in its final season now with spinoffs on the way). they were really, really banking on this thing to have legs. but we live in a blessed timeline where this show is condemned to an eternity of oblivion. it's a bit of a pity, though, because... the writers envisioned some sort of american horror story-esque anthology setup and teased a “french revolution” second season at the end of the last episode. i kind of want to know where they were planning to go with that.

Defining Terms

Polarity

(-) Active: Active Classes tend toward assuming direct control of their Aspect. They may also be more egocentric/individualistic (tho not necessarily more selfish) and take a more direct, obvious, or literal understanding of things, though these traits manifest less consistently and less prominently near the center of the Active-Passive spectrum. All Active Classes are facets of the Active Master Class, the Lord, whose Role is to Direct or Control their Aspect.

(+) Passive: Passive Classes tend towards indirectly channeling, manifesting, or moving in harmony with their Aspect. They may also be more socially oriented or collectivistic (tho not necessarily more altruistic) and have a more mutable or fluid understanding of things, though these traits manifest less consistently and less prominently near the center of the Active-Passive spectrum. All Passive Classes are facets of the Passive Master Class, the Muse, whose Role is to Inspire or Manifest their Aspect.

Relationship with [Aspect]

Expert: These Classes - the Thief, the Knight, the Page, and the Rogue - have a relationship with their Aspect that is defined by effort and struggle. They tend to engage with their Aspect on the most refined, processed, or humanistic level, using it as a tool and improving their bond with it through sustained practice and direct engagement, whether that engagement is directed towards exploiting and protecting its existing tendencies (as with the Knight and the Page) or towards acquiring it and unlocking novel or unconventional tendencies within it (as with the Thief and the Rogue).

Engineer: These Classes - the Prince, the Maid, the Sylph, and the Bard - have a relationship with their Aspect that is concrete, fixed, and steady, although certainly not lacking in intensity. They tend to engage with their Aspect in its rawest or purest forms, and view it as less of a tool and more of a force of nature, that may be worked with or leveraged but not directly overridden in its inherent tendencies. Engineers are divided between those that direct or guide their Aspect towards destruction (the Prince and the Bard) and those that direct or guide it towards construction/creation (the Maid and the Sylph).

Esoteric: These Classes - the Witch, the Mage, the Seer, and the Heir - have a relationship with their Aspect that is indefinite, mysterious, abstract, and ever-changing. They tend to engage with their Aspect in its most subtle and fundamental/essential manifestations, discovering and meddling with its arcane and obscure domains rather than those most obviously apparent. The Esoteric Classes are divided between those that are transformative, alchemically altering their Aspect (and being altered by it), and those that are transmissive, prophesying and educating others through their Aspect (even as they learn of it and from it).

Alignment / Direction

Commanders: The most Active Class of each of the three Relationship categories respectively, Thieves, Princes, and Witches all seek to Assume Direct Control of their Aspect in a manner congruent to their relationship with it. These Classes are marked by a strong sense of individual identity and a tendency to make drastic or sweeping changes to the narrative as a whole. Commanders mirror or complement the Counselor Class with which they share a Relationship category.

Catalysts: The second-most Active Class of each of the three Relationship categories, Knights, Maids, and Mages all provoke or incite change in their Aspect directly, but don’t seek to overtly command or control their Aspect. These Classes function as engines and motor forces within their own narrative, but don’t typically override the narratives of others except in extreme circumstance. Catalysts mirror or complement the Carrier Class with which they share a Relationship category.

Counselors: The second-most Passive Class of each of the three Relationship categories, Pages, Sylphs, and Seers all aid their Aspect indirectly, and are thereby allowed to aid others indirectly through their Aspect. These Classes have a somewhat muted personal narrative arc, but one that is complemented, intensified, and fully realized through its relationships with others’ narrative arcs. Counselors mirror or complement the Commander Class with which they share a relationship category.

Carriers: Finally, the most Passive Class of each Relationship category, the Rogues, Bards, and Heirs, all perpetually carry their Aspect with them, in a sense becoming one with it and instantiating its narrative role within the text. There Aspect comes to them serendipitously, and they act as much as its agent as it acts as theirs. Carriers achieve a kind of transcendence of self through their Aspect, but this comes at the cost of direct control or comprehension of their own powers. They mirror the Catalyst Classes with which they share a Relationship category.

Thief

Expert-Commander Class (Liberation)

Canon Examples: Vriska Serket (Light), Meenah Piexes / the Condesce (Life)

Opposite Roles: Rogue (Passive counterpart), Knight (functional opposite), Page (mirror/complement), Heir (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Appropriating, claiming, or stealing [Aspect] for themselves.

Key Words: Theft, desire, salience, yearning, command, ambition, obsession, commitment

Description: Thieves desire more of their Aspect, due to a (usually accurate) belief that they have been denied it. They tend to be motivated, ambitious, and passionate, but also egotistical and overly covetous. Their story arc tends to lead them from a position of sabotaging others to further their own goals to one of merging their own goals with the goals of others, in the process working past their vanity and hesitance to collaborate and rising into leadership positions of some variety. They’re at their best when they can align themselves with people who share their goals, but think and work differently, that their talents can contribute to both their interests and a larger group effort.

Prince

Engineer-Commander Class (Destruction)

Canon Examples: Eridan Ampora (Hope), Kurloz Makara / the Grand Highblood (Rage), Dirk Strider (Heart)

Opposite Roles: Bard (Passive counterpart and reciprocal counterpart), Maid (functional opposite), Sylph (mirror/complement)

Role: Destroying [Aspect] and wielding [Aspect] to cause destruction.

Key Words: Destruction, annihilation, enforcement, zealousness, extremism, passion, denial

Description: Princes lack their Aspect due to a deep-seated antipathy or resentment towards it, which ultimately leads them to destroy it within themselves. This can make them seem like players bound to the opposite Aspect at first, but unlike such players, they have no real affinity for or recurring motif of that opposite Aspect - it simply appears that way due to the absence of their true Aspect. Eventually, they must confront this antipathy and forge their relationship with their Aspect anew, and in so doing acquire a valuable tool and weapon, ceasing their campaign of self-destruction and directing their resentment instead towards the obstacles created by their past self, clearing away in the process not only that which holds them back, but also the forces which stand in the way of their friends and co-players.

Witch

Esoteric-Commander Class (Alchemy)

Canon Examples: Jade Harley (Space), Feferi Piexes (Life), Damara Megido / the Handmaid (Time)

Opposite Roles: Heir (Passive counterpart), Mage (functional opposite), Seer (mirror/complement), Rogue (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Altering, transforming, and manipulating [Aspect] to suit their purposes.

Key Words: Rebellion, eccentricity, transmutation, manipulation, reinterpretation, rule-breaking, hubris

Description: Witches force their Aspect to take on forms it ordinarily wouldn’t and behave in ways contrary to its usual disposition. They tend to effect the most dramatic change in their Aspect’s fundamental character of any Class, but they are also (somewhat paradoxically) bound very strongly to their Aspect’s nature, frequently serving (willingly, knowingly, or otherwise) representatives of its interests (this is seen with Jade and Becquerel, Feferi and Gl’bgolyb, and Damara and Lord English, for example). Their character arc tends to lead them from this role of service into a role of command, not of those around them but of their Aspect itself. At their best, Witches are revolutionaries and agents of change, forcing their Aspect to assume the forms necessary for situations to come, but at their worst, they push their Aspect and themselves past the breaking point and fall completely into the service of malevolence.

Knight

Expert-Catalyst (Protection)

Canon Examples: Dave Strider (Time), Karkat Vantas (Blood), Latula Pyrope / Neophyte Redglare (Mind)

Opposite Roles: Page (Passive counterpart), Thief (functional opposite), Rogue (mirror/complement), Seer (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Mastering, working with, serving, and guarding [Aspect]. (Note: Knights and Pages function somewhat as jacks-of-all-trades, and versatility and diligence are their real strong suits. I’d highly recommend reading @dahniwitchoflight‘s theory on “Horse Classes” for more information.)

Key Words: Protection, defense, skill, projection, armor, wielding, practice

Description: Knights are defined by effort and insecurity; they commit themselves to their Aspect, but are often unwilling to show their true doubts about their capabilities or the effort they expend in mastering their Aspect. As such, they will often project a “shield”, a persona of casual competence, ease, and expertise that stands between the world and the insecurity at the Knight’s core. In order for their efforts to truly pay off, as they so need them to, the Knight must lower their shield and allow themselves to receive the help that they’re all too willing to give to others. A Knight walks a fine line between self-destructive isolation and surrender to vulnerability, but ultimately they are at their best as leaders, protecting others through their mastery of their Aspect but also willingly receiving the aid they need from their comrades.

Maid

Engineer-Catalyst (Construction)

Canon Examples: Aradia Megido (Time), Porrim Maryam / The Dolorosa (Space), Jane Crocker (Life)

Opposite Roles: Sylph (Passive counterpart and reciprocal counterpart), Prince (functional opposite), Bard (mirror/complement)

Role: Generating [Aspect] for themselves and those around them

Key Words: Creation, independence, construction, conjuration, generation, collection

Description: Maids need their Aspect, in much the same way Thieves do, but unlike Thieves, they are capable of creating it for themselves. Initially, they will have access to a great reserve of their Aspect, but they will need to take care to avoid burning out. They’re capable of maintaining their composure the vast majority of the time, and may even on occasion seem apathetic or detached because of this; however, when pushed to their breaking point, Maids can react explosively, causing a drastic change in their Aspect that they may have difficulty controlling. They tend to rely upon their Aspect heavily, or even take it for granted, such that being deprived of access to it will cause great distress. While they create their Aspect first and foremost for their own purposes, they work best on a team with whom they can share their supply of power, and provide bursts of aid where it is needed most.

Mage

Esoteric-Catalyst (Prophecy)

Canon Examples: Sollux Captor (Doom), Meulin Leijon / The Disciple (Heart)

Opposite Roles: Seer (Passive counterpart), Witch (functional opposite), Heir (mirror/complement), Page (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Experiencing, examining, reinventing, and contemplating [Aspect]

Key Words: Interpretation, suffering, experience, wisdom, experimentation, contradiction

Description: The Mage is one of the Classes about which we have the least information. However, taking the common line of interpretation that the Mage is an Active class and the counterpart to the (Passive) Seer, it can be surmised that Mages are primarily defined by their experience of and their experience with their Aspect. This can be distinguished from the Knight’s application or practice of their Aspect by the more conceptual level on which it occurs - Knights are the more Active Class of the two, and are also the Class most consistently utilizing their Aspect on a practical level. Mages, by contrast, are characterized by a more symbolic association with their Aspect - it characterizes every facet of their surroundings. They are immersed in it, in a manner that both subjects them to great suffering and confers upon them great power. In terms of personal character, this tends to translate to players with a keen interest in knowledge, a resilient or persistent mindset, and a deeply ingrained personal understanding of matters related to their Aspect that may not be directly transmissible to others given the manner in which the Mage has likely acquired it.

Page

Expert-Counselor (Protection)

Canon Examples: Tavros Nitram (Breath), Horuss Zahhak / E%ecutor Darkleer Void), Jake English (Hope)

Opposite Roles: Knight (Active counterpart), Rogue (functional opposite), Thief (mirror/complement), Mage (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Conserving, preserving, and eventually releasing [Aspect]

Key Words: Latent, giving, withholding, attainment, progression, struggle, aspiration, vulnerability, potential

Description: Pages are the most powerful, but least intuitively capable Class. Like their namesakes, they must acquire aptitude in the domains associated with their Aspect gradually, in order to tap into the wellspring of power they may ultimately access. At first, they are likely to feel as though they lack their Aspect, much like a Thief. However, they don’t have the Thief’s intense desire to change that by seizing as much of their Aspect as they can - indeed, they may initially be resigned to living without their Aspect despite their yearning for it. Over time, the Page’s arc leads them to discover that they never actually lacked their Aspect at all, and their effort to cultivate it within themselves can lead them to overcome their low self-image and deep-seated inhibitions to become a font of their Aspect and a true master of its domains, capable of existing within it themselves and of granting its aid to others.

Sylph

Engineer-Counselor (Construction)

Canon Examples: Kanaya Maryam (Space), Aranea Serket / Mindfang (Light)

Opposite Roles: Maid (Active counterpart and reciprocal counterpart), Bard (functional opposite), Prince (mirror/complement)

Role: Healing, repairing, refining, and augmenting [Aspect]

Key Words: Heal, mend, design, enhance, adjust, perfectionism

Description: Sylphs are healers, as most of you probably know, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t cause problems as well as they can repair them. Rather, they (like the Prince) have an intuitive sense of where their Aspect is “wrong” or “broken”; unlike the Prince, however, their instinct is to correct or ameliorate this problem, rather than to abandon their Aspect altogether. Sylphs are driven towards perfectionism and exacting detail, and may consequently be perceived as meddling. Though they do not generally seek to control others or override their decisions, their distinctive vision can push them to take radical action if they perceive a situation as sufficiently damaged or precarious. They’re astute planners and judges of character, but they’re not immune to misjudgment or misconception, and may become dangerous indeed when they have been led astray by imperfect information.

Seer

Esoteric-Counselor (Prophecy)

Canon Examples: Rose Lalonde (Light), Terezi Pyrope (Mind), Kankri Vantas / The Sufferer (Blood)

Opposite Roles: Mage (Active counterpart), Heir (functional opposite), Witch (mirror/complement), Knight (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Understand, discover, and teach of [Aspect]

Key Words: Learning, prophecy, information, education, dialogue, comprehension

Description: Seers are students and teachers of their Aspect, and they carry and abiding love for their Aspect’s intricacies with them that is reflected in all of their actions. Unlike their Active counterpart the Mage, they usually harbor little to no resentment for their Aspect, as they are not so directly tormented by their Aspect’s darker facets; however, this does nmean that their relationship with their Aspect is a strictly mutually beneficial one. Seers are deeply preoccupied by their Aspect, and especially by their Aspect’s most arcane secrets, which can lead them to discover secrets perhaps better left hidden. The Seer is unlikely to see them that way, however, and just as the Seer’s predilection for their Aspect’s mysteries aids them in their ability to counsel and guide others through it, so too does that predilection render Seers rather susceptible to their Aspect’s charms and temptations. Seers are, at their best, prophetic and didactic figures capable of inspiring masses to change, but their lack of knowledge of what they don’t know often can (and does) hurt them.

Rogue

Expert-Carrier (Liberation)

Canon Examples: Nepeta Leijon (Heart), Rufioh Nitram / The Summoner (Breath), Roxy Lalonde (Void)

Opposite Roles: Thief (Active counterpart), Page (functional opposite), Knight (mirror/complement), Witch (reciprocal counterpart)

Role: Acquire [Aspect] from where it is present in excess and redistribute [Aspect] to where it is most needed

Key Words: Evasion, messenger, redistributor, roguish, stealthy, disarming

Description: Rogues are liberators and liberated, even if they may not see it at first. In some ways, they’re extremely archetypal heroes, in the same league as the Knight and the Heir - they’re the ones who restore balance to the Force. ‘The Force” here means their Aspect, which, while they may initially doubt their connection to, is in fact closely linked to every facet of their life. Consider Roxy Lalonde’s alcohol habit (pursuit of Void and oblivion) and Nepeta’s abiding sense of personal identity (and her literal unrequited love for Karkat) - Rogues instinctively gravitate towards their Aspect, albeit in occasionally less-than-balanced ways, because they love it and they want to see it set right. They can probably already tell that something’s wrong, which partly explains their reticence to engage with it head-on - they simply don’t feel up to the task. Once they’ve overcome their self-doubt and escapism, they can truly Ascend to their Role, ensuring that their Aspect winds up exactly where it belongs, in the form it belongs in. Rogues also just tend to be charming people - their generosity and independence give them an image of inner goodness that they might not see themselves.

Bard

Engineer-Carrier (Destruction)

Canon Examples: Gamzee Makara (Rage), Cronus Ampora / Orphaner Dualscar (Hope)

Opposite Roles: Prince (Active counterpart and reciprocal counterpart), Sylph (functional opposite), Maid (mirror/complement)

Role: Allow [Aspect] to decay or to come to harm; emperil [Aspect]

Key Words: Chaos, wildcard, decay, uncertainty, danger, mayhem, carelessness, abandon, avoidance

Description: Ahhhhhhhh yes. Bards. Though they’re superficially associated with villainy in the text of Homestuck, I reckon they’re more chaotic than they are evil - Bards act out of fear more than they do out of malice, and are far more inclined towards instinct than they are towards planning. Like their complement or “inverse” the Maid, they often come across as repressed - but unlike the Maid, who simply wants to avoid being seen as dependent upon their Aspect, the Bard is almost certainly frightened of theirs. Gamzee’s religious conviction and sopor-slime-and-Faygo habit are both strongly Hope-associated symbols, and Cronus’s cynicism and experience with both, uh, giving and receiving rejection are both (admittedly more subtly) symbolic of Rage. Gamzee’s real connection to his Aspect manifests when he faces a crisis - once again, a trait shared with Maids - his faith is called into question, he gets sober, and he’s manipulated by Lord English at more or less exactly the same time. He winds up going on a murder spree, getting locked in a refrigerator, and catapulting himself inadvertently straight from the narrative into the meta-narrative, and if that’s not Rage, I don’t know what is. Bards are both remarkably unsubtle but nonetheless multifaceted, and anyone who says they can predict what a Bard will do next is probably just wrong.

Heir

Esoteric-Carrier (Alchemy)

Description: Oddly enough, considering the Heir’s status as the Class of Protagonist #1 Mx. J. Egbert, they’re almost as mysterious and imperfectly understood as their complement, the Mage. Heirs are, in a sense, the Sorcerer to the Mage’s Wizard - whereas the Mage gains their (duly Aspect-associated) “magykks” through hard work, suffering, and rigorous analysis/overthinking, the Heir simply... inherits theirs. Their Aspect is a part of them and they’re a part of it, and the more they rise to their Role within the game, the more the lines between them and their Aspect blur. As the most Passive Class, Heirs are usually most comfortable by the sidelines, and they may be introverted (like our house-bound hero), conservative (like Equius), or severely socially alienated (like Mituna). However, just as Thieves are best served by rising to leadership, so too are Heirs - their isolation is something they will eventually need to transcend. Heirs don’t have the drive to power that Thieves do, but this, of course, is what makes them best-suited to wielding it. Despite their isolation, they’ve got charisma, of a sort, and they can stand out in a crowd without trying. They’ll ultimately find the transcendence they need by fully embracing their Aspect, moving beyond their concerns and inhibitions and becoming one with the motif that has permeated their entire story so far.

Phrases like “let go” and “live in the moment”, painted aesthetically onto minimalistic canvases, seem to pacify Millennials and Gen Z-ers who burn out from trying to take on the problems of the entire world from behind their smartphones. 𑁍 Until today, they were a vague placation saved, a million times over, to my Self Care Pinterest board. 𑁍 In my quest to find something entertaining on YouTube this afternoon, I was suggested an audio reading of the Tao Te Ching by Master Lao Tzu. Curious, I listened to the two-hour translated reading, enraptured by the immediate connections I could make to everyday, modern life. 𑁍 The art of letting go isn’t a Fuck It attitude, it’s not quite yolo, it’s not forsaking modern pleasures and materialism for the sake of essentialism and the supposed bliss of owning nothing. 𑁍 Letting go is to allow life to be as it is. Move with nature, change as you learn to do better, stop forcing life to be as you think it should be. Eliminate black and white thinking and unlearn the rules that humans created to make sense of the natural flow of the universe. 𑁍 This obviously only scratches the surface of this 2,500 year old concept, but I’m grateful I stumbled upon it. Given the huge humanitarian costs involved in India with a lockdown (a country with the largest daily wage worker population in the world and where more farmers commit suicide due to starvation than any other), the costs are especially horrifying when many regional administrations moronically comprehend that as "curfew", with no food and provisions available (for example, Chandigarh) with highly arrogant authorities making life worse for disadvantaged people, while some even tom-tom "shoot at sight" orders (like the Telangana CM did). Accounts of extreme distress are already emerging - multiple stories of migrant workers walking hundreds of kilometres in the hot sun just to go back home (with starvation as their other perceived option) or two container trucks traveling from Telangana to Rajasthan carrying 300 migrant workers desperately trying to get home, for example. At the end of three weeks, it may be chastening to compare Coronavirus and lockdown death tolls. Beyond dispensations and politics, this is about worldwide frenzy and alarmism, accentuated by a mainstream media that comprehensively leans towards worst-case scenarios in the name of erring on the side of safety. And many people are unable to adjust their mind to the fact that those are worst-case scenarios and that "experts" in most fields do not even agree with each other, and so get stuck on pessimistic, and often outlandish views as the most credible one (which in turn gets perpetuated). It is a perfect pointer to our times how so many react violently to that singular view being questioned, and alternative views derisively dismissed without its facts examined at all. a hot take after my billonth rewatch:

me seeing other yt ppl not counting timeless child as canon:

so, yall dont like timeless child because it highlights the doctor being the victim of colonialism and enslavement while also addressing systematic and medical racisim toward people of color but, 🌟gallifrey edition🌟 and yall would rather give the arc to the character who has continued the cycle of this towards humans (stares at last of the time lords where martha's family was forced to work under a yt man called the master)

because then you're forced to realize the time council wasn't racist and microaggresive to the master but rather to the doctor time and time again due to what they had profitted off the doctor - thereby highlighting that when the master found out in disgust and that him wearing a perception filter while wearing nazi uniforms only realy highlights that gallifreyans (specifically time lord council and the 'rich' ppl of gallifrey) during that time were no different than the humans on earth and that makes you specifically uncomfy.

like lets really look at past doctor who and nu!who - the time lord council has sided with the master on more than one occasion and not only that but they consider the master's word more important than the doctor's that when the council sides with the valeyard - which is amalgamation of evil doctor (i.e. internalized racism) and this have come up again and again in comics, books, audios, tv, maybe video games.

like even in the deadly assassin with 4th Doctor - they absolutely refused to believe that the Master would kill their leader and pin it on the very person you deemed lesser than. Which was altogether one long code-switching ep for 4th Doctor.

then again with end of time, they completely disregard the doctor and focused on the master and THE SECOND they chose to treat the master the way they treated the doctor for a SMALL SECOND: the master electrocuted their behinds back into the time war lock with them.

oh but they were manipula-- THEY DID THIS WITH PERI AND SHE DIED - THEY KILLED HER PURPOSELY SO THEY CAN MANIPULATE THE DOCTOR AGAIN TO HATE THEMSELVES, THEY DID THE SAME WITH THE MASTER BECAUSE THEY CONSIDERED HIM HIGHER IN STATUS JUST SO HE COULD HATE THE DOCTOR LIKE THEM.

the experimentation of the timeless child (the doctor) for regeneration mirrors that of the unethical medical experimentation of black people in the US for syphilis (ie the Tuskegee Experiment).

Tecteun's confrontation with 13 mirrors that of the aforementioned event in human history of scientific racism that still happens today - THAT THE DOCTOR STILL GOES THROUGH TODAY.

its not a surprise (well it is a surprise but a happy one in casting, lore in the other hand, its not a surprise) that 13 regenerates into a black man after being reintroduced in her forgotten roots albeit in a new light.

oh but 13 is being written as a chos-- no, the Doctor was always written as a demi-god to perpetuate an 'otherness' for gallifreyans to absolve them of what they had done to the doctor both physically, genetically, emotionally and psychologically.

seventh doctor was possibly the only version of the doctor on and off screen that knew their roots in gallifreyan history - albeit vague about it when questioned and its only until 13 that this is reinstated and re-remembered now on screen instead of audios and books (looking at you infinity doctors for sledgehammering it home, i love you) post-time war. This is also the first time that The Master knows about this and expected the Doctor to also not know about it. Which, if they had done this to the Seventh Doctor WE WOULD'VE RECIEVED A WHOLE DIFFERENT REACTION TO IT.

13 is shocked she worked at Division and had more faces but, honestly this isn't new information we just know that this is the name of the same sector that forced 2nd Doctor to regenerate. Its also during the time where Morbius (another Doctor) came from. So seeing Fugitive Doctor still in that era with that tardis type only highlights this in the instilled self-hatred the council and division implemented in the Doctor.

but why didn't 10 ever d-- 10 considered Dr. Martha Jones on a subconcious level as a version of himself and poured all that self-hatred onto her (which in turn explains a lot of her entire run - even down to the ostenhagen key/the moment) and while both may not have realized it at the time - like 10 clinging on to the rose past, martha married the direct foil of rose tyler: mickey. it even explains why 10 revisited 7th Doctor's Joan with Martha, knowing what he knew how he was during that era. Which Martha didn't deserve but the aftereffect subconsciously molded her into the Doctor during the Time War (even when we last see martha, they are in a battlefield with mickey nearly beat for beat to war doctor and cinder in comics)

but donna - donna's (NOW CONTINUED) run mirrors very heavily that 10 subconsciously remembers aspects of himself leading up to division, considering donna as an equal to who he was growing up on gallifrey, the division/his memory wipe being tucked away to only reveal when they really really ask for it (WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN THE BTS PICS OF FILMING WITH DONNA + FAM AND 10 SHE CHOSE TO REALLY ok let me just shh) .

but uh yeah, don't discredit the timeless child just because it points directly to human history towards pocs just because it does this to your usual self-projected yt fav on gallifrey. be uncomfy. face it. be better.

fun new meme here ! write 3-5 things a rp partner (or those who want to be) should know about you and tag 3-5 people! it should be related to rp and not to other interests.

I have a lot of muses all spread out on different blogs so, if I can’t choose one of your muses, I’m going to send in a meme for each of your muses. Out of my three primary roleplay blogs, there are four side roleplay blogs. Four of the muses being time lords and every regeneration - incarnation - is a muse of their own. Over at @themadvigilantist have 339 V muses, 89 Vin muses, 3 villains; sideblog @tardis500 has 6 tardis oc muses, here, which is also a sideblog, I have 8 ocs, 12 canonical characters, 52 televised/comic/audio parody portrayals of the doctor. At @pennybraddock, i have only 1 oc muse. At @drbabygirl, i have 1 oc, and 4 canon characters. At @thebadtimewolf, I have a singular time lord main muse with 15 human alternate versions of herself and one angel entity with @nosewitch being one singular side blog. Altogether, i have 533 muses, possibly more if I miscounted (or if the doctor ends up getting more that I missed then well shit, i’ll add them later as muses too. So, if you are someone that don’t want a spam of asks your way or thought I would just pick one muse out of your many, you are dead wrong on that and I might not be the blog for you. I’ll slap in a new muse left and right and then think I’m done only to add 20 more out of excitement just to forget about them later on. When I say I am excited to rp with you, I’m excited to throw a small village at every single muse you got unless you pick one first.

I am a very graphic and dark writer with the occasional smut (depending on the blog/muse), that does not censor or tone down their muse but, there are some limits. Just about all of my rp blogs deal with some very heavy subject material, which I tend to write out in great detail. This means you might come across descriptions of scenarios, that are very dark, graphic, disturbing or just drawn out as something that my muse realistically, no one would give/expect that kind of reaction towards in general. However, I have a limit and no, it’s not because it makes me unconfortable writing it, I just get...stuck. Okay, for example with my villain/neutral muses, I can’t write rape. I’ll write with someone that can write that particular subject but, I can’t write it myself because I don’t know how. Murder? You betcha and with detail. Torture? You got it and with trauma. Destroy an entire solar system while making the character feel wracked with guilt over the deaths of billions? Yeah, I can do that with detail on how it affected everyone else on a visual. Rape? Nope, nothing, same goes if you random anons want to just worse stuff, I can’t write it. Don’t know how, won’t know how. Now, that being said, I will never condone any of those behaviors that I describe but, if I can’t write it? Then pick something else. I can tag appropriately but, if my partner don’t tell me to cut to the next day or do fade-to-black in their following response, I’m going to describe that. Why I say depending on the muse is this: some of my muses are into fearplay/edgeplay but, the level where they were probably the reason some of their ‘interests’ are called risk-accepted consensual kinks which, for muses that are vile or evil, y’all gonna have to um, explain it that what you’re doing to them is not a dubcon situation but, a no-dont-get-off-on-this situation-this-is-my-scare-tactic. if you don’t, it’s gonna get real uncensored morticia/gomez real quick and you don’t want it. Other muses on the other hand will actually be scared so, choose (out of the collective 533+ muses) wisely. I’ll give you a list of who is in to what real quick, just ask/im me and i’ll find a generator that show just how much/little they’ll be into a thing.

I use either memes, open starters, greeters as an ice breaker but, also aiming to pre-established starters. So, I tend to make general starter for those that recently follow me in a way that anyone could respond to. I’m not shy to plotting but, for the most part, I’m just testing the waters. We can also im each other, send each other asks or whathaveyou. A jumping board that I might respond to one of your open starters or make a thread out of an answered post that you or I had sent to the other.

I don’t know how to godmod but, if you do it ...don’t be surprised that the muse is gonna fight back?? I only say this because I can’t write physical fight scenes with anyone because I’m so shit at those that I can now say that I have been accused of godmodding (2) twice in the span of a decade on this site by two ppl who (hopefully) live somewhere with free healthcare. Everytime I respond to how my character would counter an attack, there’s always that one person with their muse - that they are clearly in a fight scene - that only I get accused of godmodding out of nowhere. Despite when I look back at my responses on how I word things and I don’t see it (I still don’t. Is there an editor I can ask to look over and what I should reword here??) and the accuser fails to tell me to reword what sentence/paragraph to fix it where it’s not that. If I don’t get a response to what/where the specific bit in my response that made you think/came across as godmodding, then clearly you was godmodding too. OTHERWISE, WITH THE REST OF THE PPL I RPED A FIGHT SCENE WITH IN THE SPAN OF THE DECADE, THEY WERE JUST LIKE ‘OH THIS IS FUNKY AND FUN! *CUE TO US VIBIN OVER ANGST IN TAGS WHILE ALSO POKING FUN AT OUR MUSES AND SHIT*’ AND LIKE WE COOL SO MAYBE IT’S NOT MY WRITING STYLE, IT’S JUST YOU MISREADING THE TEXT PRESENTED TO YOU AND NOT ASKING ‘hey what you mean by [action/thing]? could you like rewrite that? i don’t get it, it didn’t sit right could you rewrite it?’ I’LL DO IT, I’LL FIX IT. HELP ME SEE WHAT YOU SEE?? INSTEAD OF JUMPING TO THAT ACCUSATION WITH NO EXPLANATION WHEN A THREAD DON’T GO YOUR WAY?? IT’S NO ANNOYANCE/BOTHER FOR ME TO FIX MY MISTAKES BUT IF YOU DON’T TELL ME WHAT THE MISTAKE IS (while consciously choosing to just point out that in some part of our thread to say only ‘stop godmodding/that was a little godmod-y’ when a muse of mine don’t react/act indifferent to yours and their actions) THEN HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO GET BETTER, DO BETTER, AND BE BETTER IN MY WRITING WITH YOU IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE REPERCUSSIONS/REACTION OF MY MUSES CHOICE OF RESPONSE?? ok that’s out of my system anyway don’t-don’t-don’t godmod but also, if you think im godmodding when i can’t tell where it is on either side ahahahah, u better fucking tell me which paragraph/sentence i fucked up instead of just throwing that word around when you can’t handle when muses don’t automatically shiver at the sight of yours. if anything, they already been there done that over it.

I’ll make a manip, gifset, draw our muses for our muses. I do that. I do that a lot. Ask me, I’ll do it. I’ll submit/send the drawing privately but, manips and gifsets: I put that on display. I will. Ask me.

what i’m saying is that: hell no you are not a kid of the doctor by normal means, are you fucking insane. in ONE SITTING THEY HAD 13 (or 26) KIDS WITH ONE PERSON FUCK THAT NOISE WE ARE NOT KILLING OFF YOUR HUMAN/GALLIFREYAN MUM THAT WAY

so the headcanon is that, everyone is being artificially inseminated in the ship or loomed as a visual baby. everyone.

the doctor, no matter the face, is infertile. 13 is unable to have kids, 12 through 1 and any other are unable to have kids.

the only thing my portrayal will accept is if you come up to them and say you’re their kid to their face and they will adopt you and call you their child forever.

or if the doctor pulled what bruce wayne did to produce terry and his brother in batman beyond and basically used their dad, altered the genetic DNA make up of said dad and produce children that way. which is another plausible way for the doctor to be your dad

unrelated but related: thirteen will be a proud dad. call her dad. give her dad gifts and she’ll love you infinitever. she already has the mug. im sure the doctor has like other dad things. like a dad shirt or something.

I’ve come to inform you that I’ve recently cannot rest. I noticed your previous concern when I just looked as if I was somewhere else and I brushed it off as something that wasn’t to be worried about and yet here I am worrying. I worry because of the simple fact that I am falling for you, Madam. I can’t sleep because of the dreams I have, dreams that should only appear once and not on a constant continuation from the last one. I have dreams that are silly but, within this letter, I suppose that you’ll just not worry about it. Unless they bring it up as a continuing topic for you to get married. In which case, burn the letter and run for the hills before reading any further.

I came to the conclusion of my feeling teetering over in pure infatuation with the theme of my dreams. The only reason, besides your concern, that I tell you this is because I also consider you a friend and I confide in you as well as you confide in me...away from politics.

The first dream I had was three weeks after I showed you that young warrior’s skull. You were so content and relaxed and then we started running around nude like mere babies. That’s where the dream ended because I literally woke up and patted the bed to make sure you wasn’t there. You would have probably laughed at the sight of me. My hair was everywhere. I’m planning on cutting it at the end of this week.

The dreams just keeps going from there like a long week in a span of a few days.

The latest dream I had, it was obviously night. You arrived at my door to complain about some war plan because...that advisor, the annoying one that you told me not to punch even though I really wanted to, I forgot his name. That advisor wanted you to marry the enemy. It was too stupid to take seriously when the dream you explained it but, you were very distraught. So, I kissed you and you kissed back. Then, it went further enough for vivid details but, I rather not write it. I rather tell you later in passing. I don’t want him snooping through your letters and finding one stuffed like a pillow but hard enough to whack him into next year. Hence, this singular letter.

There’s this feeling when I look at you, something I can’t explain. Your fascination with the strange and peculiar burns these hearts bright. That same curiosity, that same rebellious spirit. The way you smile in excitement at things that would make your advisor’s blood run cold. Your eyes and how they shimmer like the stars along the night sky. Your lips that can make the tulips bow in comparison. The feel of you in my arms is something I want for the rest of our lives. I don’t want you to marry someone you hate or marry anyone at all if you don’t want it. If you do wish for marriage, then marry me or at the least in secret. I want to see if your advisor’s head pops straight off when he finds out we got married in secret. Even if it’s temporary. Just let me revel at the look on his scrunchy old face.

You were so content and relaxed and then we started running around nude like mere babies. That’s where the dream ended because I literally woke up and patted the bed to make sure you wasn’t there due to remembering you had a meeting that day addressing war strategies for future attacks. You would have probably laughed at the sight of me. My hair was everywhere, wind-swept one would say. I’m planning on cutting it at the end of this week. I might not though considering it is currently cold at night and one way to avoid a cold is to not shave one’s head. It’s debatable.

The dreams just keeps going from there like a long week in a span of a few days.

The latest dream I had, it was obviously night. You arrived at my door to complain about some war plan because…that advisor, the annoying one that you told me not to punch even though I really wanted to, I forgot his name but, he gave a sniveling appearance and wasn’t, surprisingly, a Saxon. That advisor wanted you to marry the enemy. It was too stupid to take seriously when the dream you explained it but, you were very distraught. So, I wiped away your tears with my thumb and then we sat there as the fire flickered on. We kept inching closer and closer until our lips hovered over each others. I could your once shuttering breath now steadying.

Then, I kissed you and you kissed back. You didn’t pull away, you wrapped your arms around me and soon, like the physics of a dream, we were in my bed. It was like we could break away from each other. We couldn’t breathe without other and we were out in the open.

Unclothed, in dark, tangled in each other.

My lips locked with yours as I felt your fingers dragged along my back, clawed, grasping for more of me and I of you. I was both there and above, watching it all unfold. Powerless to stop it, powerless to even want it to stop. That hunger, that passion, that heat. I could hardly breathe as I took you as you wanted, as you commanded and as I obeyed. It felt real. Extremely real. Horrifyingly real.

I can still feel your breath against my neck, your hair tangled in my fingers, your gasping, whimpering, whining, moaning for more, for me, echoing in my ears. The feel of your naked, flushed flesh pressed against mine. I could feel every curve of you in my arms, the weight of you straddling me and your heaving form underneath me. The taste of your heated skin on my tongue, against the skin of my teeth.

And we were so close, so painstakingly close to each other’s climax that when we came together to scream in pleasure, to scream each other’s names to the starred heavens above us, to breathe freely...

I woke up and I couldn’t breathe. Like something was pressing down on my chest, something grasping, clutching at my throat. Throttling me as if I had done something wrong. Dared to dream of something like that, to feel something remotely like that. My hearts burned for more of it to where it physically hurt.

Actual pain from a dream. I’m actually pissed off that my hearts physically, consciously couldn’t handle an illusion. Talk about a betrayal of the body. It was--well, I’m not dead. I haven’t regenerated, thank goodness. How would one explain that death? I haven’t really gotten a clue so, if you know of anyone that almost died in their sleep because of their own dreams, let me know because I’m so angry about this. Annoyed. What if that happened in reality? How ridiculous would that be, really?

Sorry, written rambling. It happens.

I understand you might have a list of male suitors, possibly two lists since there might be one of female suitors. Three if, shockingly, there’s a suitor that’s a “ill” Dalek. It happens. Terrifyingly, it happens. I witnessed it. War, I thought war was terrifying, no. Seeing a Dalek getting married to a Gallifreyan and Human couple. I don’t know where they are. I left. I didn’t want to be around in case they got “better”. But, they send postcards. So, it’s not all bad.

I also understand on the question of “why should I pick you instead of them” or add me to the list. I rather not be on the list or be picked unless you want to and not because of some old ratty letter. I’m a Gallifreyan knight in pure servitude to you. I do not have an estate, if I did, I wouldn’t be living in the quarters I have now. I do not want money or being a king or any of that nature. I can negotiate but, as far as ruling a kingdom, I would be a terrible king.

Do you see the problem with that logic that was just written? I want to marry or be betrothed to a queen but, I do not wish to become a king or a prince of any nature. It is completely childish. Doable, but childish. I would be a loving husband and a doting knight but, I believe I would be terrible as a king. At the very least in king clothing. Please don’t make me wear king clothing. Please. You might and I don’t want to. It looks pompously Saxon.

I think you are a strong, stable queen who does not need a husband or a wife or a lover to prove who you already are. A Queen. Ruler of your country, your people. I am not proposing to be your King or for money or anything that can circle back to politics or a overtly decorated, unnecessarily worshipped tin headpiece.

I just want you.

Just you.

Only you.

As my friend, if you wish to remain this way. As your Storyteller, that I can be. Or as a silent lover or husband. Either way, still an obedient and loyal servant to you.

The crown only comes second to the one that wears it, at least to me. You are important to me. Not an inanimate object. Because you’re more than that. You are fantastic.

Respond or don’t. I’m not the boss of you.
