god the scene in season one where jonathan comes home to joyce and lonnie on the couch drinking together is harrowing. it makes me want to cry just thinking about it, your brother is dead, your mom is horrible mental state and is now also introducing your abusive father back into your house. what a fucking nightmare.

Also wanted to ask, is there a reason why Barb is just being a bitch? I think it's a nice contrast to everything else but it seems odd for her to be kinda be rude. I am not trying to criticize! I just was wondering

First of all, I'm soooo glad you're enjoying it.

Second of all, anon, this is hilarious. SO! In my head, Barb and Nancy have always been each other's main person. They're the stereotypical codependent girl best friends. You know how it goes. And then Barb had the stereotypical response to having your codependent best friend get a boyfriend for the first time: jealousy. I think we see this in the show within the little bit of screentime Barb gets. She gets snarky and mean, especially toward Steve, sometimes when he hasn't necessarily done anything. And yeah, a chunk of that's gonna be because she flat-out doesn't think Steve is good enough for Nancy. But another big chunk is that Nancy suddenly has shifted priorities, and she's no longer sure she's at the top of the list.

So, in this AU, Barb had to go through all of That, and then when Steve goes missing, she somehow gets stuck with her best friend mooning after Jonathan Byers of all people, where she's third wheeling (again???). And THEN her best friend finds out the boy she was sort of not really seeing is like in TROUBLE with a capital T, so now she's focused on getting him back. And Jonathan is Still There, so what is she going to be, the fourth wheel????

So she's going through all of this inter-personal shifting of dynamics all while not having any time to sort it out in any real way because she's also going through inter-DIMENSIONAL shenanigans.
