my dad is turning Sixty Years Old on the 20th, so i drew a picture of him for a video my sister is making. here's the whole time lapse with one of his favorite songs!
finished my second mini! one of the mtg kaldheim shapeshifters. thought these dudes had a really fun design that would be cool to paint :) went for blues and purples, the wood also has a light metallic gold highlight to it so it shimmers a bit
i really need to clean the base up but apart from that im really happy with how it came out, especially for my second ever mini :D ive got the other winged shapeshifter to paint next which oughta be a fun challenge
how do people choose music for their speedpaints fdsjkl I think maybe I just overthink it and start feeling weird about any and all music that I listen to 😭😭
How people post time lapses of their drawings is beyond me. Like personally, nobody can know I have no idea what I'm doing. Somebody just sat a tablet down in front of me and I've been fucking around ever since
Genuinely desperate to know what brushes you use in CSP <3 your work is otherworldly and gorgeous
Hi! Ive gotten this question and keep meaning 2 reupload my brushes and forgetting to but THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME! Here's a google drive folder with them :) I'm a little busy currently but i can do some speedpaints to show the techniques i use with them one day. It's a lot of layering, and i do play with opacity & density and texture density a LOT within the same brush.
A lot of what i do comes from layering, but I do also focus on being quite loose with my colors, letting them flow into eachother even in less rendered illustrations. I don't have a lot of unflattened art rn unfort but here's one example of a base colors layer + just detail that shows the idea of color flow which i think contributes a lot to the "flowy ethereal look" ppl mention when describing my stuff
The first one is a base layer w a couple colors, where you can see the blurring (i used the big "square chonk" brush here. its not even square its a leftover name). The second one, if i recall right the flat color was just straight up red only, and i just started layering grey colors on it, then blue, purple...
Sorry this is kinda badly explained but i do ecxplain this bc its p important w my brushes: i do use kinda sharper ones rn, and the layering/playing w color and stuff IS what softens them up.
can you pretty pretty please with extra sprinkles on top drop the speedpaint for your most recent rookvil art? i wanna see how you did vils pretty dress and everything else cause its all so beautiful
I am so happy you like how it looks!! I would love to make a speedpaint, but unfortunately, I didn’t record it + the base for the drawing was actually done traditionally with a pencil. A lot of my drawings are done this way, actually…
Even though I can’t drop the speedpaint, I’ll do the next best thing and explain my process for this specific drawing step-by-step. It’s actually not that complicated!
Here is how the sketch looked initially. As you can see, I shaded the dress very crudely; in fact I was kind of upset with how the dress looked at this stage. Ironically, I ended up not doing much to the pencil shading, and it still turned out okay somehow?? Anyways, the first thing I did was to prep the sketch for the colouring stage: I adjusted the contrast, fixed Vil’s face, and erased some dirt and imperfections.
Then I create a new layer, set it to Multiply (this way I can colour the sketch without disturbing it, as if I was just colouring a digitally done lineart) and do a base colour layer. There is a gradient in Vil’s hair and Rook’s belt buckle, but other than that, all the colours are flat at this stage.
Before doing all the shading needed for this sketch, I add details such as makeup and tights. If you want to know how I did these, let me know, but I basically looked at a tutorial once and then simplified it lol
Now, the dress.
To be completely honest, there isn’t any proper technique to what I did, everything is always just trial and error and an hour of me going “does that look good? NO IT DOESN’T >:(“ until both Katsu and I are satisfied. This time I was lucky, because it didn’t take very long, and the “solution” was pretty simple.
Starting with the base colour. I turned off the sketch layer to show that it is indeed completely purple. And it looks kind of bright at this point, almost too bright even, especially considering that the dress is supposed to be mostly black, or at least dark purple. But bear with me.
Next I added some highlights (new layer, set on Overlay or Screen, depending on what looks best). Usually I would add the shades first, but I wanted to make the fabric look more “shiny”, you know, the type of fabric that would reflect the floor and make this highlight under the boob lol.
And after that I just went ahead and added black gradient (on a new Layer) from the bottom of the dress to make it look darker, silkier and a little bit more interesting for the eye. I erased some parts of the gradients as you can see, because it looked too dark on the highlighted parts… could’ve just placed the black gradient layer under the highlights layer and saved myself a headache, but hey, where is the adventure in that.
Finally, it turned out looking like this. It looks better than it used to look like initially, but there is one more thing to do. We don’t get to do this one too often, so it always excited both Katsu and me: THE SPARKLES!! Somehow, making the dress sparkly makes everything much better.
How do I do the sparkles: I use the star brush… or was it a snow brush? I use this brush when I draw both of these things lol + when I draw anything sparkly. I would’ve given you this specific one, but I don’t really remember where I got it from, and I honestly think that any starry or snowy brush would work wonderfully as long as the specs are small enough.
After that is done, I just shade the rest of the drawing. Nnew layer set on Multiply, the shading is done with darker purple/red + darker blue, whatever looks better on any particular material: the skin really likes warmer colours, but Rook’s suit looked bad with red shades, so I adjusted it to blue.
And here is the post where I talk about how I colour hair! Good thing I already wrote that one, this post is getting long lol
And the last step is to add details. The original sketch was done in a rather small (smaller than A6) sketchbook, so I couldn’t draw all the details like Vil’s earrings and stuff properly. Basically I just paint on a separate layer on top of everything.
And there you have it! I hope it makes sense, please let me know if you have questions.
Hello qii!! I follow you on twitter as well and recently just got myself on tumblr lol. Im so so happy to see your art! its very soft and smooth even with the textured brushes!!
I am curious, will you ever show a speedpaint of your process? I know csp in built recording takes a lot of space and might not be ideal though haha
this was answered before but yes, I've done timelapses! and CSP definitely saved the day and time for it. but nowadays I just kinda forgot to set record or the place I drew the things isn't in the... desired condition lmao (most of the time I continue off the doodle from a.... really big file of compiled doodles. it'd look real weird)
the timelapses are mostly buried in my twitter, and all of them are 1-min! here's part of the dozen I managed to save for Amy <3
what type of youtubers would the trolls be? Karkat would definitely make rants and reviews of romance movies, Kanaya would make makeup or fashion tutorials, Sollux has an IT channel he made so people stop bugging him (nobody ever bothers checking it instead of asking him)
quick spitballed ideas bc this is such a cute prompt
aradia - reviews of inaccurate halloween decoration skeletons. theyre not rated on anatomical accuracy but by how much swag they have. most of her other videos are short clips of her livevlogging her day and telling short stories, but shes funny and witty so they do numbers. very low effort and low cost, but shes having fun.
tavros - CARD PACK UNWRAPPING. guy who in no way can afford his hobby but keeps getting these card packs for his channel. surprisingly relaxing to listen to while you have him minimized in another tab while you do something else. he goes over each card in the deck and their effects as well as rarity.
sollux - basically what you said. IT guide on walking through common computer problems. horrible mic quality, but really helpful information.
karkat - ABSOLUTELY would be a movie reviewer. no facecam but for whatever reason has CRISP mic quality. somehow NEVER peaks his mic despite all the screaming he does. he loves media analysis and getting pissed off over fandom drama so hed probably also do breakdowns of scandals in fandom spheres, and somehow almost getting sued.
nepeta - SPEEDPAINTS. and like. flipnote hatena style amvs. obviously very amateur but its a very cute art style and she has no concept of copyright infringement.
kanaya - makeup tutorials and fashion reviews. would definitely be like that one youtuber who reviews the accuracy of historical fiction dresses in film and tv. everytime the virgin mothergrub is in the background of her videos her comments are spammed with "MOTH MOM REAL"
terezi - animated shitposts. like. grinchs ultimatum, garfielf, shit like that. REALLY bright colors and shitty linework with windows moviemaker transitions. no one knows who she is and shes never done a face reveal so shes a total enigma. there are deep web theories that her videos are anti-empire propaganda.
vriska - flarping tutorials. genuinely. she goes over mechanics, spells, class breakdowns, even shares stories of her own flarp campaigns. VERY passionate about it and kind of has an asshole youtuber persona. posts an apology video like once a month then goes on like nothing happened. replies to every mean comment.
equius - weightlifting videos. dead silent. just grunting and metal clanking. no editing. addresses every comment in every video. lots of heavy breathing. very uncomfortable. almost like performance art in how desolate it feels.
gamzee - cooking videos. its as bad as it sounds.
eridan - showing off everything in his hive and talking about it. his guns. his outfits. ranting about pollution. each video is an hour long. its mostly just him complaining or bragging about the stuff he owns.
feferi - has a live feed of her cuttlefish pen going constantly. posts animal care videos. posts music. does challenges. her youtube is kind of an inconsistent mish-mash of content but one thing remains: you will watch her cuttlefish.
do u know how 2 read because its in the tags of every single art post (and sometimes even the captions) i have ever made + my pinned post + in all my speedpaints + i made a whole TUTORIAL talking about it like you have had over 400 posts where i have given u this info like its really just, stupidity at this point because this is the most fuckin accesable info imagineable
anyway i work in mspaint (windows 10 version). always. though i do VERY occasionally do exporting in asesprite (witch is paid) but u do not, need this, by any means, its really just a convient way for me to save out out my animations as gifs
i should put together speedpaints... honestly just for my own sake bc i like watching how i did things bc i forget so quickly SBDBDKL but also perhaps I'll upload them here too hmmm
