Brick is the leader of the rowdyruff boys as well as the oldest. He started off very evil and still had respect for his brothers, but eventually changed. When HIM brought them back to life, he was very cocky, arrogant, and devious. I don't think Nick is evil but, we know how he can get depending on the situation. I mean Nick said it himself when he gets angry he is scared of himself, so i feel like it adds up. Both Nick and Brick have a tendency to pick on their brothers so it adds up. In the show, Brick and Butch tended to gang up on Boomer so it makes sense for Nick to be Brick considering Nick does team up with Chris on Matt. I also think red compliments Nick very well, especially when he has the red-brown hair thing going on. Brick's main ingredient is puppy dog tail, now we aren't harming any animals so I feel like Nick's ingredient would be a beat up pair of shoes. super dirty from running around and doing who knows what.

Matt would be Boomer

Boomer is the middle child of the rowdyruff boys, categorized as the dumb blonde with blue eyes. Matt isn't dumb though, he just doesn't have a chance to speak because his brothers gang up on him and interrupt him, much like Boomer. After Boomer's resurrection from HIM, he became a loudmouth and fought back. I see that in Matt. Nick and Chris joke about him trying to be tough, but I see it as him standing up for himself, and making his voice heard. Even though Boomer is considered evil, he is still polite. I see that in Matt, he can be mean/aggressive when need be, but for the most part, he is polite. blue looks so damn good on Matt, it's my fav color on him (besides pink.) Boomer's main ingredient is armpit hair. Ion know about yall but I'm not snipping any armpit hair so I feel like Matt's main ingredient would be a hockey stick and a blue slurpee.

Chris would be Butch

Butch is the youngest of the rowdyruff boys, categorized as the chaotic, havoc-reaping, little brother. idk about yall but that is Chris to a T!!! He is so mf chaotic it's mindblowing. There was an episode where Butch poured Gatorade on Mojo Jojo and all I can think about is Chris pouring drinks on Nick in the car. At first when Butch was introduced he was more calm and collected, agreeing with what his brothers wanted to do. When HIM resurrected the boys, that's when Butch became a little chaos gremlin. I feel like that works with Chris because he is calm and collected for the most part and then suddenly he's jumping around and making the most noise. Very hyperactive, jolly, and likes causing chaos. Both Butch and Chris have a tendency to twitch when they get excited, making crazy noises, grinning like a mad man, and flailing their arms. Typical little brother energy. Butch's color is green and I think Chris needs to wear it more. It really makes his eyes pop and the way it matches his hair just does sum to me. Butch's main ingredient is snail, it's so obvious and has been done but I just now his main ingredient would be a Pepsi...just to be original I feel like his other ingredient would be a burp or cough😭

Hey, I'm sorry if this is outside of your wheelhouse but you're one of my fav Butch bloggers and I wanted to get your honest opinion on it. I recently got an Instagram reel from a (white) Butch, yeehawllywood, shared on my feed which defined Butch as a Lesbian-exclusive gender identity and in a reply to a comment, that "Butch is to Lesbians what 2S is to the indigenous community".

Now I'm not Butch but I do have a cultural gender identity somewhat similar to 2S, and my partner is 2S herself. I think the comparison is somewhat offensive but since neither of us are Butch, I'd like a Butch Opinion on the whole thing so I'm not ignorant when I discuss how I disagree with it.

Oof, I am not two-spirit so I cannot speak to how offensive the comparison is but my understanding is that it would be pretty offensive and also at least fairly ignorant.

"Butch" as a term is not even woman-specific, as it was historically used in drag and ballroom scenes of all genders. But within sapphic spaces, it is neither lesbian-specific nor exclusively a gender identity. Butch can be used to describe someone masculine, it can describe queer masculinity, and it can be a gender. The beauty of butch is that it does not have hard borders--quite the opposite of two-spirit.

If anything, a term to compare to 2S is "stud," which is a descriptor/gender/gender modifier for Black masculinity which came about from gatekeeping of terms like butch over race and as a way to distinguish how Black masculinity has its own experiences separate from other mascs. Anyone who tells you that butch only belongs to X is a big liar, but Stud is a closed term that not anyone can claim.

"Butch" belongs to all genders, it belongs to all sexualities, and it describes a whole host of experiences of queer masculinity.

I’m gonna mention. I feel like the Travelers are p Romani coded. there are lies spread abt them abt infantacide (or in the case of Romani ppl, kidnapping), the slur used in place of their actual name, and their beliefs. So far it hasn’t been too offensive, which is a breath of fresh air, since SO MANY stories that take inspiration from Romani ppl do it the most horrible way possible. Some seem like they went down an itemized list of harmful stereotypes and tropes. I just want to let you know that even if this wasn’t intentional, it seems really baked in there, and if you’re worried abt anything, getting a Romani sensitivity reader could help! There’s also lots of literature written by Romani ppl detailing their history of oppression, and how it’s been used in pop culture (What We Do In the Shadows, for example, was an incredible anti-romani show)

That said, thank you for the kind representation. I really like Storm, and her being a butch gnc maned lioness just kind of rocketed her to the top of the fav list lol.

Ahh thank you so much, it's so good to hear these kinds of asks where we're doing OK with this kind of cultural representation because it's obviously something we're quite passionate about showcasing. Without buying into stereotypes, of course. The whole Traveller culture actually draws inspiration from Irish travellers, as they are also subject to the same discrimination you're talking about, especially in the UK. I mean, that's not shocking considering they're Irish or of Irish descent.

They are stereotyped as being thieves and basically leeches of society over here, except their "thieving" is actually them going around and asking for any items that are broken and useless so that they may take them and either repair them or use their parts to fix something else entirely. Extremely useful if you need something getting rid of for free and it's just something that's always been a thing for as long as I can remember.

They'll also contribute other things to the community such as tuck shops (basically selling candy from a moving truck) and handymen services. Like I say, they've just always been a presence around me and I went to school with some of their kids.

They're basically just about getting resources from honest labour and reusing materials and they get hated on for it, purely because it's "different" and "weird" and it's truly not right. Especially when we as individuals outside of their culture take advantage of these services anyway.

There's plenty of media over here written by Irish travellers detailing their childhoods growing up so I'm also drawing inspiration from those sources.

But yeah, Irish travellers are subject to similar discrimination as Romani so completely understandable why you're getting those vibes. c: - RJ

'queerness is infinite. and so is my love for you.'

ava sniffles and then wipes her nose with the back of her hand, props herself up on an elbow and kisses you. 'the same goes for you, you know that, right?'

'yes,' you say. 'i — i hold it close, often.'

she pauses, holds your jaw in her palm, and then kisses you. you kiss her back, with your eyes closed, with tears pressing at them that won't fall, not this time.

ava doesn't hesitate a few days later when she introduces herself to a few of your friends and says that they can use any pronouns; she tries on one of your binders one afternoon and then frowns and laughs and says, god, i love my boobs but then quietly makes sure to massage your shoulders every evening after that. she tries on any clothes she wants, picks out a suit one day that she whistles at when she sees herself in the mirror, and then laughs. there's quiet nights and loud brunches and your friends who consistently use different pronouns for ava without batting an eye, and it makes her smile even as she dumps salsa that will be way too hot on her chilaquiles and then has to eat them trying to hide a grimace. you don't know how to have that much freedom, not yet, but ava holds your hand and leads you along, always.

you're figuring it out, the loosening of limits you'd set so tight within yourself; ava's figuring it out too: how to be, and how to become when, of course, there's still cruelty — but there's infinite abundance too. you turn back to the documentary — all the fungi that weaves its ways in and out of the world, for longer than you can imagine. all the fish in the sea; all the stars in the sky — a steadfastness and a wonder and a joy, to exist beyond. to become.

TW FOR RACISM, CHILD IMPREGNATION, EUGENICS, & TRANSPHOBIA

FOR EVERYONE'S INFORMATION:

Side Quest is definitely one of the weirdest fics I have ever seen get popular, for several content-related reasons.

Firstly, the racism. She writes her Serizawa to be half-black, half-Japanese, which is a perfectly valid hc if not for how she handles this fact. Ignoring the moments of subtle racism she gives Reigen (having him comment on the apparent "sloppiness" of his afro--which she also refuses to call an afro, by the way--and also having him guess his race via his racial characteristics), she blatantly and openly makes Toichiro racist towards Serizawa in a way that I feel we cannot ignore. For example:

I shouldn't have to say that calling a black man a "slave" in any context is fucked up, but I will for the sake of this post! Since she already think I'm insane :-) Also:

Once again, shouldn't have to say this but I will: Saying a black man has a "brutal masculine appeal" is so obviously and blatantly racist while also being entirely unnecessary for his character! We understand, as both readers and watchers of the base material, that Toichiro is a bad guy. We do not need him to then become racist, borderline-pedophilic, and a supporter of eugenics! And if you need quotes for some of these points, I will include one that has both:

Even if he is saying that he won't facilitate the "impregnation of a child", why the fuck is he laughing about it? Just a reminder: Toichiro in canon is only a terrorist and a child abuser. Yes, he is a bad person. However, I think elevating his evil to this level removes any concept of character depth that you could possibly have, and makes the ending of this fic (where he is seemingly normal and fine, with both his wife and child in his relative good graces) all the weirder. But again, I'm insane, right? Oh yeah, one more point about Toichiro that I found from the comments:

Now this tells me several things. Firstly, it's that she lacks the oversight to recognize when there is blatant racism in her works of fiction. Which is questionable, but I'm willing to let that slide because people should always be given the opportunity to grow. HOWEVER, the second part of this tells me that the first part might be a lie!!! Because hey!! If you are headcanoning a person's parent as being a WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN WITH EUGENICIST BELIEFS, you are basically saying your character was raised by an APARTHEID APOLOGIST. So I really don't know how you can avoid the racism embedded in that statement.

Now, let's move away from Toichiro because he's not the only character she completely butchers with weird concepts. Shimazaki is a trans chaser in this fic.

That's right. I'm not kidding. He is a chaser.

Once again reminding you that I'm the insane one.

There is literally no reason I can see as to why she would write this, other than that it is supposed to be a joke. Now, as an afab trans butch, there is only so much I can say to this point, but I will still ask: Who is laughing here? Who is this joke funny to? Is it to the trans women, who have to deal with similar kinds of harassment each time they try to go on a date? Or is it the Shimazaki fans, who I guess aren't weirded out by their fav being a chaser? Or is it just you, silvercistern? Is it just funny to you?

That point brings me to one of my last points with context. She seems to enjoy throwing in random "edgy" topics for either shock value or a laugh, neither of which I think her wording lands on. I did collegiate improv comedy for all four years of college (yes that may seem pathetic to you, but it was fun)--if anyone knows how a joke should sound, I think I'm one of the few. And, frankly, none of these land. For instance, the repeated "joke" of calling Reigen a creep or alluding to him being a pedo:

But, again, me? I'm insane, apparently. If you take issue with any of this, like I did, then to her you are insane.

This is not surprising to me, given that she already had a kind of breakdown to my friend regarding when they asked if silvercistern could tag one of her fics with sa.

But this is why it does not surprise me that she 1. would private her twitter account when faced with even the slightest backlash, 2. would then talk about the situation to her mutuals to garner sympathy, and 3. not even bother to read a single thing I said, given that she replied to my post in less than a minute after I had posted it.

By the way, one of those mutuals? Yeah, they are literally a toichiro/shou shipper. Here's the proof:

There are very few ""headcanons"" out there that get a bigger side-eye from me than people who try to make Stephanie Brown into a Black girl.

Firstly because that is not a headcanon. That's just a whole-ass retcon created out of thin air. A headcanon would be saying she's a natural redhead like how Morgan Kohan played her on Batwoman, or that she's mixed-race because of the curly way some artist draw her hair. There's definitely flexibility in race interpretations for comics but looking at the blue-eyed blonde-hair white girl and declaring her "actually Black" is not one of them.

Secondly, because I have seen (and sometimes gotten) a lot of harassment from Steph fans aimed specifically at Tim's actual, canon Black love interests and teammates. I still seethe at the memory of this one CBR interview I read back when YJ2019 was running, where Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker were clearly there to talk up Naomi and Teen Lantern, and in the middle of their heart-felt conversation about the importance of representation for young Black girls, the interviewer butted in to interject, "But you know who I want to see more of?? Stephanie!!!" This going on while Steph fans on Twitter were going on racist tirades because the book dared to highlight the history of Teen Lantern, a character who was actually advertised to be a part of the book and a new member of the team, instead of giving them more of their white-blonde fav who had never been affiliated with YJ and was never part of the advertising.

Thirdly, she was created and so often written by Chuck Dixon, a blatant racist, and as a result there are so many little scenes of her that have uncomfortable racial elements to them. Like the one where he created a pair of Black girls just so Stephanie could call them "raging morons" to their faces and then later talk about how stupid and immature they are compared to her. (Which I am still convinced was Dixon directly criticizing the much better teen pregnancy subplot from Icon & Rocket). Or the borderline-blackface white savior ""demon"" where she wears a dead gnu and maybe accidentally calls herself a bitch in Swahili. (Disclaimer: I do not speak Swahili, and thus do not know how a sentence structure that should read "I am thorn" turns into "I'm a bitch" or "I'm crazy," but I checked that translation with three different robo-translators and got the same results so, shrug.)

And finally -- god, Steph is just, such a walking avatar of white women's privilege. Her entire thing is demanding that she get her way, never letting anyone tell her no, and still being treated by the narrative as a pure-hearted ""beacon of hope"" that everybody needs to protect and nurture at all times.

The inciting incident of War Games can be boiled down to, "A white girl got told no, and made it everybody else's problem." The first attempted Black member of the Batfamly fucking died during that event and got almost entirely forgotten because people only went to bat for the white girl who caused the whole mess and the white woman who got character assassinated to kill her off.

If Stephanie were Black, she wouldn't exist anymore. Fuck, if she were a brunette or just as butch as Carrie Kelly, she probably wouldn't exist anymore. She certainly wouldn't be Batgirl, I can't imagine Dan Didio replacing Cass with another woman of color.

And it's not even just her? Her father is also a very white character. It is incredibly easy to summarize Arthur Brown as a mediocre white man lashing out at the world for not handing him the success he felt entitled to. Take that petulant entitlement away from him and you lose his entire character.

I'm ranting about it on my own blog instead of picking a fight because everybody's entitled to their own fandom experience and blah blah, but this is just. Yeah. Ugh.

she forms a sort of relationship with a girl in class and they go to a lesbian bar secretly

can’t recommend enough!  

Her Body and Other Parties - Carmen Maria Machado

Carmen Maria Machado is the GOAT. Her writing is just incredible and some of these stories are haunting.

single handedly made me like short stories.

both Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers listed it as one of their favs. I Know the End is based on a story from this book.

if you struggle with anxiety or/and depression and a fixation on death and/or illness, boy do I have the book for you.

Painfully relatable but also very funny. in a laugh at your own pain kinda way. and the main character is a lesbian in a relationship. I truly love this book and highly recommend.

I had it on my tbr for a year and when I finally started I finished it in one sitting. 

No One Belongs Here More Than You - Miranda July

definitely an acquired taste but one of my favorite books of all time.

Disobedience - Naomi Alderman

I did not expect to like this as much as I did. I hated the author’s other book. But I really liked about 90% of Disobedience. Really interesting look at religion and conformity. 

The Rehearsal - Eleanor Catton

another unhinged classic. A lot of my literary recs are a bit unhinged.

A book about the weird relationship teachers have with their students, specifically in music and theatre. Touches on themes of consent and abuse, as well as sexuality and power dynamics. 

My Education - Susan Choi

Book about a woman who falls in love with her professor’s wife but the woman won’t commit to her. that’s kinda the whole story.

9/10 would recommend but that’s just me

The Miseducation of Cameron Post - emily m. danforth

from the movie trailers I thought this book was about cameron at a conversion camp, but it’s about way more than that. and only maybe 1/5 of the book takes place at the camp.

Liked it way more than I thought I would! 

My Brilliant Friend - Elena Ferrante

sooooo this book isn’t explicitly queer but ok actually it is and I will fight anyone on this. my favorite book series ever so it must be on the list.

The Lying Life of Adults - Elena Ferrante

this book IS explicitly queer and literally when the fuck is the sequel coming out?

has many of the same themes as MBF. I am a whore for Elena Ferrante so had to put it on the list but I wouldn’t say either of the books are like SCREAMING explicitly wlw content. but it does inform many of the actions of the characters*

 A Memory Called Empire - Arkady Martine

an incredible book about assimilation in an empire

very funny and great worldbuilding/culture building

has really interesting themes and the sequel is even better imo

the main relationship is between two women and it is very connected to the themes of assimilation and personhood but also a cute relationship 

The Space Between Worlds - Micaiah Johnson

what if the multiverse was discovered but to travel to a parallel universe you can only do it if you’re dead in that universe. otherwise you will instantly die

so who do they chose to do multiversal travel? the disenfranchised because they are more likely to be dead in other universes

book very much delves into themes of class and race.

I’m obsessed with the budding relationship between the mc and her “handler”.

mc is a soldier who ends up working for the ruler’s niece who is trying to stop a rebellion

When they first left the city properly Donnie was the one fronting for most of it cause the rest of them were either terrified or exhausted, because when they first left the city it was Not for a great reason suffice to say. Mikey was the closest by and would add in with a lot of stuff because although Donnie is rlly good as the Guy In The Chair internally on the ground work is not his strong suit. Most of the time when he's fronting Leo is there with him and that's true both pre and post discovery. Raph just kinda... watched. Didn't say much which is fair, because for the aforementioned Not Great reason he was fucking exhausted. -- before this they had left the city a few times during their early childhood running from Shredder, but that was before they were really Them and also before they could really process anything. Didn't even register cities just buildings, some tall, some short, some none at all.

Pizza is their all time favorite food and pretty much the only thing they can all eat comfortably ^_^ helps that none of them really has a preference as long as they can shove a slice of it in their mouth, but if they had to choose favorites Leo would go with sausage, Raph likes sausage but with barbecue sauce lumped on top, Donnie just goes with cheese and sometimes cauliflower if he's fronting for a while (no one else like cauliflower), and Mikey just shoves whatever the fuck he can on it (within reason) and then dumps just POUNDS of parmesean on top of it. "Would you like some pizza with that cheese?" Is one of Splinter's top ten phrases of all time. Tbf if Mikey is in The Mood the most he can deal with is just plain cheese as well (The Mood is depression but he doesn't recognize that.)

They don't tell most of their villains abt being a system, and Raph punches their faces in regardless. Do yknow how much of a disadvantage it would be for their enemies to know that? Not only do they have a dissociative disorder but Also PTSD. they got a hard enough time as is but goddamn. Sometimes it's hard to hide, like when Raph is very visibly arguing with someone who isn't there. The specifically observant villains are able to guess, but half of them think it's demon possession and/or a kid whose gone crazy which is fair. I am messing around with a Shredder finds out from Karai plot in my head tho and it seems fun.

They knew April pre-system discovery so she was the second person they told after their dad. They waited a bit to tell Casey, mostly to see when April could give the go ahead that he was chill. It actually went down a lot weirder than that - what ended up happening was Casey started living with them before Ronin told him so it became this whole thing where he was part of the family but like hm. He doesn't really know he has 5 siblings not 2 so they should... they should probably tell him that. The same thing went down with Karai but that was a much more.. Situation of a Situation.

If they had time for fashion they would but they unfortunately don't, but if I had to guess Mikey would be really into Japanese street fashion, Raph would dress like a butch, Leo would be a huge retro fashion guy, and Donnie loves some casual techwear.
