Saint Peter of Alcantara
1499-1562
Feast Day: October 19
Patronage: night watchmen, Eucharistic adoration, Brazil, Estremadura Spain
Saint Peter of Alcantara was a Spanish Franciscan friar of noble birth. He was friends of many 16th century saints including St Teresa of Avila who he was her confessor. Peter was a priest, mystic, writer, preacher, and provincial of the Observant Franciscans. He worked towards church reform, starting with himself, practicing severe penances and patience. At times he only ate once in 3 days and sleeping 90 min. a night. He started the Alcantarine reforms, which followed a stricter order of the rule of St. Francis. He died while praying on his knees.

WHO: Anyone of any practice, or no practice at all, who enjoys seasonal celebrations, cooking, and feasting! No restrictions, if you can pick up a spoon and stir you are invited!
WHAT: Your challenge is simple: choose at least one recipe from the Porter’s Seasonal Celebrations Cookbook chapters on Halloween or Thanksgiving to incorporate into your seasonal celebration (follow the link to borrow the book on archive.org) and share with us photos and a write up. We hope you will use as many seasonal and local ingredients as possible and look forward to hearing about your experience with those ingredients and locales.

On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th-century naval victory, which secured Europe against Turkish invasion.
Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.
The feast always occurs one week after the similar Byzantine celebration of the Protection of the Mother of God, which most Eastern Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics celebrate on October 1 in memory of a 10th-century military victory, which protected Constantinople against invasion after a reported Marian apparition.
Pope Leo XIII was particularly devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary, producing 11 encyclicals on the subject of this feast and its importance in the course of his long pontificate.
In the first of them, 1883's “Supremi Apostolatus Officio,” he echoed the words of the oldest known Marian prayer (known in the Latin tradition as the “Sub Tuum Praesidium”), when he wrote:
“It has always been the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary."
“This devotion, so great and so confident, to the august Queen of Heaven,” Pope Leo continued, “has never shone forth with such brilliancy as when the militant Church of God has seemed to be endangered by the violence of heresy … or by an intolerable moral corruption, or by the attacks of powerful enemies.”
Foremost among such “attacks” was the Battle of Lepanto, a perilous and decisive moment in European and world history.
Troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire had invaded and occupied the Byzantine empire by 1453, bringing a large portion of the increasingly divided Christian world under a version of Islamic law.
For the next hundred years, the Turks expanded their empire westward on land and asserted their naval power in the Mediterranean.
In 1565, they attacked Malta, envisioning an eventual invasion of Rome. Though repelled at Malta, the Turks captured Cyprus in the fall of 1570.
The next year, three Catholic powers on the continent – Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States - formed an alliance called the Holy League, to defend their Christian civilization against Turkish invasion.
Its fleets sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of Greece on 7 October 1571.
Crew members on more than 200 ships prayed the Rosary in preparation for the battle — as did Christians throughout Europe, encouraged by the Pope to gather in their churches to invoke the Virgin Mary against the daunting Turkish forces.
Some accounts say that Pope Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League's stunning victory.
Without a doubt, the Pope understood the significance of the day's events, when he was eventually informed that all but 13 of the nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk.
He was moved to institute the feast now celebrated universally as Our Lady of the Rosary.
“Turkish victory at Lepanto would have been a catastrophe of the first magnitude for Christendom,” wrote military historian John F. Guilmartin, Jr., “and Europe would have followed a historical trajectory strikingly different from that which obtained.”

January 6th is one their three High Holy Days along with June 16th (Escalator Day) and October 7th (Feast of St. Putin).
The MAGA cult depicts itself as martyrs despite its incessant persecution of people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, pro-democracy advocates, practitioners of science, and women seeking control over their own bodies.

Everything I could find on Hungarian goddess Boldogasszony (BOL-de-vahs-oyn), cobbled together from various sources (some more trustworthy than others) and personal gnosis.

Boldogasszony, syncretized with Mother Mary, is the patron saint of Hungary. (Encyclopedia Britannica). But what do we know about the pre-Christian goddess?
Her name is usually translated as "Blessed Lady."
Boldog Asszony literally means ‘Happy Woman.’ Asszony, translated as ‘woman,’ possesses an extra nuance: Asszony indicates a relationship so close and intimate that, though not a physical blood relative, it is impossible to conceive of having a wedding or funeral without Her. That’s the gist of Boldog Asszony, presiding spirit of life cycles, especially births and weddings.

She is also sometimes referred to as Nagyboldogasszony and her seven daughters as Kisboldogasszony (big vs little Boldogasszony.) Are they the fae and she, their mother?
The Hungarian Christian Universalist page Az igaz tudás és szeretet hívei ("Adherents of true knowledge and love") describes an early religion called Büün or Boldogasszony Faith, the full details which I will eventually translate, where the female aspect of God is called Ukko, possibly similar to the Altaic goddess Akka. Both names simply mean "mother."

Boldogasszony may have been considered a "birth fairy" whose wrath could be incurred if new parents failed to call on her. She is also called upon for weddings.
Hungarian wedding festivals often take place in winter, after the harvest season and meat preparation. The traditions here are laden with magic we can ‘borrow’ for building strong personal relationships, asking for Boldogasszony’s blessing by having a cup of milk present at any activity. For example, cutting a rope that is attached to your home symbolizes your release from the old ways and freedom to enter into commitment. Stepping across birch wood purifies intentions and ensures a fertile, happy union.
Lighting a torch (or candle) represent vigilant devotion in a relationship. Do this at the time of your engagement, as you recite vows, or as you both enter a new residence for the first time so that commitment will stay with you. Wherever you are, eating off each other’s plates and drinking from one cup deepens harmony (include a milk product like cheese). Finally, dancing with kitchen utensils ensures that the home fire will always stay warm.”

Tara handed Buffy a book on art and she flips to a close up photo of this sculpture. It's the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, located in the Cornaro Chapel of the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.
Teresa of Avila: a 16th century Spanish Carmelite nun, author, mystic, and religious reformer.
Teresa's feast day is October 15th, I headcanon as Buffy's resurrection day. It differs to Bargaining #1 airdate (Oct 2) since her death in The Gift is exactly 730 days after her prophetic dream in Graduation Day #2 then her resurrection is exactly 148 days after her death but before Halloween.

Today we celebrate our Venerable Father among the Saints, Gerasimus of Cephalonia. Saint Gerasimus grew up a pious young man and travelled to Mount Argos to become a monk. He then visited the Holy Lands, where he became an attendant at the Holy Sepulchre. Here, he was ordained a deacon and priest by Patriarch Germanus of Jerusalem. For forty days, Saint Gerasimus struggled in the desert beyond the Jordan, just like his namesake Saint, and then requested a blessing to live a life of solitude on the island of Zakynthos. Having spent much time in prayer and fasting, Saint Gerasimus felt a calling to travel to the nearby island of Cephalonia where he lived in a cave. He built a women's monastery where he lived in asceticism for thirty years. Here, he achieved the heights of spirituality, being granted the gifts of wonderworking and healing. At the age of 71, the venerable one reposed in the Lord on August 15th. Because this is the feast of the Dormition, his celebration was moved to August 16th, but is more commonly celebrated on October 20th on the uncovering of his holy relics which were found incorrupt. Saint Peter of Alcantara was a Spanish Franciscan friar of noble birth. He was friends of many 16th century saints including St Teresa of Avila who he was her confessor. Peter was a priest, mystic, writer, preacher, and provincial of the Observant Franciscans. He worked towards church reform, starting with himself, practicing severe penances and patience. At times he only ate once in 3 days and sleeping 90 min. a night. He started the Alcantarine reforms, which followed a stricter order of the rule of St. Francis. He died while praying on his knees.

EVENT TWO . 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐍 .
within the red keep , hidden in secret pathways , servants are hard at work with finalizing the details for the royal wedding of the decade . outside the keep and within the city of king's landing , commoners are setting up fair games , preparing delicious delicacies and building the tournament stands for weeklong festivities for the happy pair . servants gathered each guest of the red keep to the throne room , inviting them to witness the king's speech as he speaks in baritone voice :
“ as king of the andals , the rhoynar , and the first men , the lord of the seven kingdoms and protector of the realm , i welcome you all to join the royal family in the celebrations of the upcoming wedding of my heir , daemon of house targaryen , prince of dragonstone , and his betrothed the lady shaera of house rogare . throughout the streets of the capital and castle grounds , fair games are set up to return nobles back to the days of careless childhood and allow you to seek out heroic rewards in dangerous competitions . the royal family wishes to see all of our guests attend the festival festivities before we gather together in the great sept of baelor for the nuptials . the only rule i have for those who attend : enjoy and commemorate the occasion . ”
and here it is : part one of the official wedding celebrations ! the king is hosting weeklong festivities spread out all over king's landing , the crown spares no expense as his esteemed guests can indulge in whatever their heart desires free of charge. while in character this will only be a week long , out of character it will last two weeks ( from october 2nd to october 16th )
some of the activities available through king's landing are : a jousting tournament held in the newly built arena , an archery contest on the red keep's training grounds , each night the king holds a feast in the great hall paired with dancing on westerosi classics such as the rains of castamere or jenny's song . the mazes in the gardens offer several games of hide and seek with worthy prizes deep in the green while the streets offer local treats , take your children apple biting or watch a play composed by the commoners and servants .

Born during the 16th century Joseon Dynasty to a prince and a bride, Jae-min assumed his parents were living any Kumiho dreams, ruling a country and feeding on the people, but Prince Yi Joosung was a cruel man and his mother was his prisoner. Once a kumiho living as a seamstress, Park Da-som was trying her hardest to blend in. After centuries of murder and tricks, she wanted to have a family and was ready to give her powers up to be a human.
Sadly, when she moved to Hahoe, she was not the only Kumiho around. The crowned Prince spotted her almost immediately and decided to make her his bride, someone to carry his heirs. It was uncommon for Kumiho to steal each other Yeowoo, knowing how much they valued their privacy, but Joosung cared little, the easiest way to not be rejected was to force compliance.
Park Jae-min's earliest memory was his father killing a palace warrior and offering it to the young fox spirit. He was to be the strongest and darkest of kumiho, his father expect perfection from his child. And had Jae-min murdering people as soon as he could. He took human form for the first time when he was just 34 years old. He remembered the pride in his father’s eyes and the horror within his mother’s.
While he was a prince he enjoyed the life of a warrior, the battlefield was his playground, and cutting people down, and feeding on the pain and anger only fueled him more his bloodlust was insatiable. He loved the thrill of tricking someone and feasting on their hearts. It was after one such night he learned the truth about his parents. While he cared little for people, he cared deeply for his mother, she was his whole world, which is why his life came crashing down he found her half dead by their home.
Enraged he carried her to his room, already planning the murder of anyone who thought to harm her until she confessed it was his father and how she spent the last few decades tied to the man only because he forced her to. She spoke of her dreams to be human and while she loved Jae-min, this was not the life she wanted for herself or her child.
Heartbroken for his mother, he promised to set her free one day. While he couldn’t see the appeal to be human, he wanted her happiness. Returning to his father in the evening, he pretends that nothing happens and begins plotting his revenge. As the decades passed and invasion found its way to Korea, Jae-min saw the perfect opportunity to end his father.
Shifting into a different form, he seduced the Japanese general and whispered all his father’s secrets and the easiest ways to end him. He knew the general couldn’t kill his father, but he could wound him enough for Jae-min to finish him off. His only miscalculation was while he was cunning and cruel, his father had written the book on it. Getting wind of his son’s betrayal, Joosung fled Korea with Hahoe leaving the country to burn without his rule.
Jae-min stayed behind in Korea, cleaning up the mess he made for a few years before he followed his father. He chased him around the world for centuries until he finally caught up to him in Italy in 1897, but he was too late. When he arrived, his father cut off his mother’s tails, fleeing again. He held his mother as she took her final breath. It took him 20 years before he finally hunted his father down and he wasn’t going to make his death easy.
He stole his father’s Yeowoo and decided it was time for his father to get a taste of his own medicine. For the next few decades, he ordered his father around, forcing him into his slave, until he was bored of him, and decided to have mercy on the man that taught him to kill and showed him just how much of a monster he made him into.
For the past decades, Jae-min moved from county to county as a tailor opening businesses and feeding on the Clientele, going to school to learn more, and destroying lives until, once again, he grew bored.
He wanted something more fun like the good old days. People made it easy to feed and he wanted a challenge. And like a miracle, he learned of a magical island where supernatural and humans alike reside. Feeding on an island where everyone was aware of the dark part of the world was intriguing and he had an idea to make it twice the fun. He would go as two people for double the enjoyment, after all, psychological warfare always had the sweetest results.

“The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel on September 29 is associated with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of the days. In the past it was celebrated as Michaelmas Day and was one of the most important days of the year; by Michaelmas, the harvest had to be completed, and it was also a time for beginning new leases, settling accounts and paying dues”
WHO: Anyone of any practice, or no practice at all, who enjoys seasonal celebrations, cooking, and feasting! No restrictions, if you can pick up a spoon and stir you are invited!
WHAT: Your challenge is simple: choose at least one recipe from the Porters Seasonal Celebration Cookbook’s chapter on Michaelmas to incorporate into your seasonal celebration and share with us photos and/or a write up. We hope you will use as many seasonal and local ingredients as possible and look forward to hearing about your experience with those ingredients and locales.
