Rupert Bunny - Rite of Spring, oil painting Rupert Charles Bunny (1864–1947) was a masterful Australian painter who was recognised internationally. Bunny was born at St Kilda, Melbourne. He spent two years of his childhood in Europe where he became fluent in French and German. In 1881, he enrolled at the University of Melbourne to study civil engineering. He quit his studies and briefly tried acting before joining the National Gallery schools. In 1884, Bunny traveled to London with his father and studied under Phillip Calderon at St Johns Wood Art School. He travelled to Paris, where he lived for almost fifty years. He made regular visits to London to see his family and to exhibit. Bunny was the first Australian to be chosen to exhibit at the Paris Solon. His early works were often large compositions that explored Biblical themes and classical mythology. He also painted symbolist landscapes.  At the turn of the century, Bunny painted work for the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He focused on painting modern life in landscapes and portraits, often musicians and explored abstracted forms. During the First World War, Bunny worked in the American Hospital in Paris. In 1932, Bunny finally returned to Melbourne, spending time with local contemporary artists.

Guiseppe Signorini (b.1857 - d.1932), 'A Fete Champetre', oil on canvas, no date (1920s), Italian, sold for $10,000 USD in Bonhams 19th Century Euroean Paintings sale, May 2018; New York, NY, USA.

Silvio Mazzoleni, Signorini's dealer in Rome, describes the present painting in a letter to Mrs. Thompson as one of the best the artist has ever painted. He continues 'The subject of this picture represents a private entertainment on the border of the Lake of Nemi, in the Alban Hills (Roma Country). The personages are represented seated on the lawn facing the Castle of the Princess Orsini - Costumes Louis XIV'. The Thompsons were bankers to Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis and collectors of Italian art, particularly paintings by Signorini. (x)

Week 3 Blog post

While reading through chapters 15 and 16, I didn’t realize all the buildings, sculptures, and paintings that were created.  They all were different and had a different meaning.  Some people could have seen the piece of art and thought something different than the person standing next to them.  That’s the beauty on how art can create a different image for everyone. For me being colored blind with a couple of colors, I could miss one little detail.

Renaissance humanism was from 1300-1600.  The studying of Greek and Roman text began in the fourteenth century.  On page 242, students stopped using Gothic script and started to use the Latin alphabet, standardized spelling and grammar.  La Gioisa school promised low income families that their child would be educated next to the richer students.  Girls and boys were taught together Latin and Greek.  Both learned lots of different sports, but boys got to learn martial arts.  On page 244, two more doors were needed for the Baptistery, and seven contestants competed. Ghiberti and Brunelleschi were the more famous ones, but Ghiberti won.  These two had some very detailed sculptures that must of taken a lot of time being done in bronze. They had to later work on the dome of Florence Cathedral together.  Brunelleschi found some things wrong with Ghiberti work and after Brunelleschi died from a sudden sickness, Ghiberti was let go.  I find the Florence Cathedral an impressive building that is about 100 feet tall and 138 feet in diameter.  Brunelleschi added 24 ribs to both the inside and outside frame for extra support for the building.  

Masaccio had some very detailed paintings such as The Holy Trinity, The Brancacci Chapel, Expulsion from Eden, and Saint Peter in Prison.  On page 252, he had six different paintings in a collage that looked great together.  On page 263, Donatello made a life-size all bronze naked statue of David.  Filipp Lippi was an orphaned artist kind of like Masaccio, but he mixed spiritual and monumentality.  Andrea Mantegna was the most recognized painter in the middle 1400’s that created master pieces on walls and ceilings.  I find the Netherland painter, Rogier van der Weyden Descent from the Cross painting very interesting on how he had everyone in the painting.

The High Renaissance in Italy was around for about 35 years.  The most known artists were Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Leonardo da Vinci’s most known paintings are the Mona Lisa, and The Last Supper which is 15 by 28 feet.  The Mona Lisa has even been in some movies.  On page 286, it says that Leonardo even hired singers to keep the smile on her face.  

Michelangelo lived to be 89, and was an architect, painter, and writer.  His famous David sculpture was nearly 13 ½ feet tall. Also, his 5,800 square feet Sistine Chapel nearly took four years to complete.  Raphael’s Madonna of the Meadow was done in 1505.  He then spent two years completing the School of Athens on a 26 by 18 foot private library wall.  Giorgione was another artist in this chapter that painted nude women in the outdoors. The Tempest, The sleeping Venus, and Fete Champetre were the most famous one he created before he died at a very young age of 33.  

It’s amazing how much detail on the front of buildings and paintings inside churches were made. These had to take a lot of time and patience to complete, especially on the old wooden ladders that were probably used. A few of the paintings were shown of Jesus being crucified.  There were a lot of architects and painters that took the time to create a lot of art from many centuries ago and people still enjoy looking at them today.  Just think how much it would cost today making a real-like statue in bronze, or painting a moral, or building these churches.
