hi:) welcome to byler polls!

this is a tumblr account where we post polls for the byler community to answer. they can be about fanfictions, headcanons, pretty much anything you want to ask the byler community.

submissions are: open!

if you want to submit a poll, just send an ask, it can be anon or not. make sure you include the question as well as the different options on the poll and whether or not you want a "see results" option.

please, no nsfw polls, as both will and mike are both young teens canonically (15 and 14 respectively).

below are some guidelines/tips to submit your poll idea in the most ideal way, which will help your poll be added to the queue faster!

polls guidelines/tips and tricks:

please format your answers/options for your polls with numbers or letters if you have more than two answers! for example, in your ask, you would say:

"what is byler's favorite season? A. winter / B. spring / C. summer / D. fall"

"what is byler's favorite season? 1. winter / 2. spring / 3. summer / 4. fall"

this makes it easier for me to make the polls and ultimately your suggestion will likely be turned into a poll faster. this also helps since you only have a limited amount of characters for each option!

if you have a question about mike and will respectively, please submit two asks! so, for example, your first ask would look like this:

"what is will's favorite season? A. winter / B. spring / C. summer / D. fall"

your second ask would look like this:

"what is mike's favorite season? A. winter / B. spring / C. summer / D. fall"

I think you should do whatever is easier for you and/or makes the brackets easier to make/see. Idk how many exact options you got submitted but as much as I love the idea of the subtypes being able to compete in the main bracket that might get really big really fast??? So I guess my answer is whatever makes the bracket(s) size you'd rather run <2 (didn't want to go off anon to share my opinion hope you don't mind lol)

Aw, thank you. I should probably explain my thought process.

Originally, I had all the votes tallied up, and at a certain threshold for submissions, I needed 3 more to make an even bracket. If I went down to the next level of submissions, I would have way too many. I was thinking about doing one singular preliminary poll to decide which 3 of the next level should be included in the bracket. However, there were too many to fit in one poll, and I didn't want to delay the main bracket too much by doing multiple rounds of preliminaries, and I couldn't figure out a simple way to have 3 winners with a bracket-style preliminary. I decided to research each of them to make sure they were actually gemstones to see if that would help the numbers.

While researching, I noticed that several gems with unrelated names were classified as quartz. I added them to the list for the quartz preliminary and moved on. Then I came across the fact that amethysts are technically a type of quartz. I think I'd heard that before, but I realized that a lot of people weren't aware of that and/or still consider amethyst its own gem. So that's where that first poll came from. Then I decided I should do that for all the quartz varieties that don't have quartz in the name. Except the thing is that so many gems are quartz.

At that point, I got the ask suggesting that quartz varieties be included in the main bracket, but compete against each other early on. So I posted a poll about that. And now we're here.

If I had to pick a size for the bracket, it'd probably be 32 or 64. If we allowed all the subtypes to compete, it'd be at least 128. In terms of ease to make, it'd probably be with preliminaries, which was the original plan, but I also don't want to make that decision without voter input.

That was probably a lot more information than you expected, but I wanted to get the backstory out there so people can understand what on earth is going on.

TL;DR: I couldn't make an even bracket with my original numbers, and after research I learned that gemstone names make no sense. I was going to do preliminaries, but I wanted voter input because there are so many varieties of quartz.

i think what would be amazing is getting guest writers (if you're not comfortable with more mods) to have a wide range of trans experiences + resources as well as potentially getting older members of the trans community involved. i'm not saying that young members experiences aren't valid (far from it) but older members (30+) are so underappreciated and i think that sort of experience could be invaluable for writing resources + general inclusivity since the history of trans spans more than just the recent 20 years. i hope you don't find this an insult i just think it'd be a good suggestion!

i saved this for last because this anon is actually really wholesome.

i would absolutely love to accept guest writers in the future so that we can cover a vast range of trans experiences and resources. trans people are not a monolith and i absolutely believe that it’s vital to include as many differing viewpoints within the community as possible to fully compile a good resource regarding ways to and to not write trans identified muses. at the moment we aren’t entirely sure what the whole mod team is going to look like, but if you are an older trans or gender non-conforming identified individual please send us an ask off anon or get into contact with us! we would love to have you on the team because right now it’s me, mocha, and eros who i believe is also younger and i’m lonely surrounded by all these youths /j

in the same vein if you are or you know any nonbinary trans fem or trans women who would like to join the team please send them our way! at the moment the team is primarily comprised of trans men and while i can bring information regarding the experience of trans women to the table (my wife is also trans and always willing to answer my silly little questions), it would be fantastic to have an actual trans fem writer on the team to fact check me and give me other view points. i also try to ask a lot of my female friends in the com for pointers and listen when the talk so i can bring what they say to the table, but again, i’m just a second person source and it’d be great to have a first person source.

as far as guest writers, mocha and i need to discuss ground rules but i think we’ll def open up the submission box eventually and will be asking for community feedback via polls and google surveys. we by no means want to be the only voice represented on this blog and as long as differing opinions come to the table in a non-confrontational fashion i’m happy to talk to pretty much everyone who wants to talk to me because that’s really the only way to learn!

anyway, i agree!! more trans elder rep!!! and i def didn’t take this as an insult in any way and neither did mocha. your ask was actually a relief sandwiched between two agro asks that made our day a little brighter. if you’re interested in joining the team then we look forward to hearing from you! and if not, then we look forward to your submissions when we do open submissions to the public. thanks !!

Anon, you’re right!! It is about Hartlings / HartlingAdopts! How did you even guess that out of all the species groups there are?? xD This is ranukii, not sure if my name shows up in subs but i figured this would be too long for an ask! I’m not going to bother posting the entire conversation here, although i’ll post a quick screenie of the dates of group creations and a bit of a clearer explanation.

Okay so i politely sent them a note suggesting that they change the name, i gave my explanation why i think it should be changed and i kindly showed them the proof that mine was being used first! Their group was started May 5th, less than a week ago, as mine was started March 22nd, almost 2 months ago. They claim to have started their species on Chicken Smoothie, however the earliest post about them there was only April 15th. Although i clean my journal submissions regularly, i’ve hinted and written little blurbs about Hartlings throughout them, as well as my twitter. I think you can still see the poll from Mar 22nd where i officially decided on the name. The group itself states right on the front that the species is in development and will be opened soon, yet they claimed that when they saw the group they thought it was “dead” and apparently it didn’t occur to them to even look at the box or the website? Or date of the group’s creation? (them admitting that they saw the group before hand also disproves their claim that they “didn’t know” in the first place.)

Their only reasoning for the name choice is that it sounded like a word play on “heart”. Which is cute but also far fetched, why not go with heartling then? Hart literally means “adult red deer” and lin means “forest”, as my species are deer based forest protectors/spirits.They also have “hart”(heart) shaped patches on their chests and inner ears that emit a life force that enhances the forest and plant growth around them! I literally spent nearly a week or more researching deer lore, forest lore, different words and sounds in other languages, variations of related words, etc, to come up with a unique and suiting name, and i just feel a bit let down about it after spending that much time and putting so much thought into it. Their species has nothing to do with deer or forests so the name i feel doesn’t connect with them at all.

They mentioned that it would be far too much trouble to close the group and transfer their ~5~ members to a new one, as well as edit every post with the word “hartling” in it, but that just seems like all around laziness to me. I did the same exact same thing on a much larger scale with my first species, and it took me no more than a half hour tops.

Their all around single and only defense at this point is that “they didn’t intend to copy”, however even with that, i feel as though they should still respect that it was thought of before them, and make a change before it’s too late or their group gets too big.

After some sleep i’m basically over it, although still a bit salty. xD I just personally cant wrap my head around why someone would name their species something that doesn’t have any meaning connected with them??

Anyways, thank you as well anon that mentioned they were excited for mine!! I’m hoping to get the rest of the wing and tail traits up this week, and then start getting the group going!! Ive got a lot of the lore written up as well, it just needs some reviews before i update the website but im really excited about it!! *U*
