The Shadhavar

A powerful instrument made from the horn of a mysterious unicorn, is now Samir's weapon of choice! The flutemaker, however, warns him of the consequences of using it, and trusts that it is in good hands now.

This took me longer than I expected, but against all odds, burnout and creative block included, I finally finished this one! I hope to make more short comics like these, even stand alone pages, to show a bit more of Samir's story without commiting to a full comic... yet.

I was just wondering, do you know anything about johann Joachim Quantz’s relationship with fritz? That lit ass hoe who blazed on the flute and hid in a closet?

So Fritz met Quantz at Augustus the Strong's court at Dresden in 1728. They met again shortly after during Augustus's visit to Prussia a few months later. Frederick's mother, Sophia Dorothea, then made arrangements for Quantz to come to Prussia twice a year to give Fritz flute lessons. In secret of course, since Frederick William didn't want his son playing music. The closet thing you mention (for those who don't know) refers to a famous incident where Fritz was having a secret flute lesson with Quantz, with Katte posted outside of the room to warn them if the king was coming. Then, Katte did exactly that. The three of them quickly hid the sheet music and flute and Fritz took off his red french dressing gown, hiding it under the bed and putting on his uniform. Katte and Quantz both hid in the closet. Unfortunately, when FW came into the room, he noticed Fritz' hair, which was curled and styled instead of in a military queue. He searched the room and found the dressing gown which he threw into the fireplace, and french books which he confiscated and sold. And he beat Fritz. The only good thing here is that he didn't think to look in the closet where Katte and Quantz were hiding and, I assume, horrified.

After Frederick's ascension to the throne, Quantz formally became his music teacher as well as composer and flutemaker. They were very close as even as king, Fritz still saw himself as his student and let himself be instructed and criticized by Quantz. At this point Quantz was married, but it was said to be an unhappy marriage and that his wife was very controlling of him. Which lead to the rumor that Prussia was actually ruled by "Mrs Quantz' lapdog" (meaning Quantz himself, teasingly saying Fritz would do whatever Quantz told him to do, band Quantz would do whatever his wife told him to do). Like I said, Quantz was allowed to criticize Fritz' music. He did so by quietly coughing whenever Fritz played the wrong note. On one occasion, Quantz was coughing throughout the whole performance which led Fritz to joke "What are we to do about Quantz' cold?". Quantz was also known to shout "Bravo!" when Fritz did well in a performance.

That's the gist of what I know. They were obviously very close since Quantz had known him since his teen years. Of anyone else knows more, please add lol.

What are your most awesome flute experiences? (any kind of flute-like instrument)

I've played flute since I was 14 but really got serious about several years later. I was reading a lot of Bach and etudes and working on my sound while I was working on a cruise ship in 2015.

In 2018 I got another ship contract and there was a show we did every 2 weeks that was all classical excerpts, entirely on flute. I remember being in the first rehearsal and just sight reading the show down. That was the first time I ever felt really comfortable with my flute playing, so I'll remember it for a long time!

I've really fallen in love with alto flute lately, and have been reading a lot of Celtic and Bansuri music on it. I love the sound and it's just been a really restorative and positive experience so far ☺️

I got some bamboo from a friend and recently made my first flute, which was such an amazing experience that I want to do again many times over! I still have so much to learn, especially since I didn't cure the bamboo and my flute shriveled up overnight!! I'm thinking about getting dozens of stalks next time, curing them for a few months, and making whatever I can think of.

Better with Age: Haruka Uesugi-Forrester

Describe your character at ages 20, 40, and 60!

20— Being a lonely but intensely focused youth, Haruka grows into an unknowingly lonely and intensely focused young woman. She is already a proficient swordswoman and an even better ranger, she has already joined the twin adder and earned the rank of sergeant first class. Her father's influence is clear, however - even as she works her way through the ranks with expertise and efficiency, she's secretive to an extreme, never revealing more than she needs to. The rumors of the "Wraith of Gridania" that followed her through her youth - the result of her natural talents in stealth and subterfuge and developed ability to have a constant flow of aether muffle her steps and bodily sounds, resulting in her being shunned - follow her into the military, and few outside of her unit desire to know her. However, her mother manages to get to her, at least a little: she opens up to a select few who share some unorthodox passions at the urging of Eadwynn. Her close friend and fellow ranger, Erwin, gets a peek at the woman beneath who still hurts from being so alone throughout her life when she drinks a little too much and reveals hints of resentment. And lovely Isette, a Wildwood and daughter of a reasonably famed flutemaker, begins to make overtures toward her after a decade of curiosity. The overtures leave Haruka confused, for though she has certainly had her share of partners already, most were attracted to a sense of danger at being with someone viewed by most as dangerous or cursed. She begins to allow herself to hope that, perhaps, she's allowed to feel things. That doesn't change her demeanor, however, as most are unnerved by her irrationally stoic persona.

40— The death of her family, her myriad friendships, her bonding to Reenah Uesugi, and the appearance of children in her life have had quite the effect on Haruka. She appears older, perhaps even wiser, as she dresses in reasonably common and practical cotton yukatas and leather trousers as she walks the halls of her home or the streets of the Xiatien, her ancestral seat and small province to the south of Doma on the One River. She and her wife have worked hard to revive their home over the past ten years. With many sacrifices and trials, she appears aged, and at times, very sad. Among her people, she is alternately called "Oni" or "Yokai," the former a title given to her out of fear, but now, it is used out of respect for her prowess in battle; the latter came to her after the use of certain supernatural abilities overtly helped her province. She still displays a marked stoicism, but she is no longer so afraid to let some emotions show - doing so feeds into the rumors about her still roam, though parts of them have become a thing of legend: the ronin who redeemed her name and became daimyo, who travels the world wooing whoever she pleases, committing acts of heroism, and is willing to sacrifice herself for those she cares for. In Eorzea, however, she is nearly a different person. Doting on her wife and her partner, Haruka is often seen revealing her true nature - a tempestuous woman of middling years, one made hard by the world and her tribulations, but also allows herself to be soft and caring. Among others, she's quieter, still wary of trusting, but allowing herself more leeway. Times of strife would reveal an inner turmoil: she feels distinctly that she's standing between worlds, unable to get her feet in either one. In one, she is not wholly respected for her unorthodox style of leadership and rejection of some social norms. In the other, she feels rejected as an outsider, unable to fully integrate into society. She has more scars than before, many obvious, and she hasn't given up her training routine, giving her body an extremely toned appearance despite her increasing age.

60— Time has worn the rough edges. The re-emergence of Xiatien onto the national stage has helped the Uesugi clan revive some of their former reputation, but not without cost. So many trials and triumphs and losses have left her without many illusions, leaving her somewhat cynical, but also an implacable realist. Her greying hair and weathered skin reveal the effects of some of those trials, as well as the loss of one eye in battle with the last of the Saito and the other permanently darkened due to the curse that has ridden inside her for decades. Though eminently practical, she often finds pleasure so much more easily than she used to. She plays politics when she needs to, but with many, she has become blunt and honest, giving orders and opinions in equal measure. She hasn't given up her old roles in Eorzea and maintains contact with her old friends and closest old lovers, but she mostly stays in the rebuilt House of Summer in Xiatien. She has accepted her role as daimyo to the clan, which she rules with Reenah by her side, and they will soon be stepping down in favor of their child and their advisor, the author, samurai, and their adopted daughter Uesugi no Kumiko Fujimori. She often feels out of place and between worlds, but these days, she cares little for such feelings, embracing her place in the world. She tries to go about her day trying to add color to the world. She's an accomplished painter, and being a former actress in parts of Eorzea, she's actually recognizable for those talents. Though she has regrets, she can now acknowledge all she has done and the good she has brought to her corner of the world. In the end, many days she finds herself comfortable staying home with her wife, wandering the countryside with the Spearmaiden who has long accompanied her, administering to the needs of her people - always in person, much to the Spearmaiden's chagrin - visiting her family, or merely reading a play as she lies her head on the lap of someone she loves.

2024 Update: We are in a present campaign to raise funding to provide outhouses for many families in severe poverty. The least expensive outhouse cost $222 and those that we need to hire workers to walk in supplies into the mountains, with cement and concrete blocks, cost $416. We really need help with this project.

We continue to support our team in Nicaragua of 12 doing the work to bring food to 12 feeding centers, to bring food, supplies and medical care to approximately 288 special needs children, to support artisans with micro-business, to help folks in 2 villages learn to read and support the planting of rice to help families in the Miskito Coast to break out of poverty. Our team on the ground is also reaching out to the poor of 4 garbage dumps in Nicaragua.

The Monte Carlos Farm that we started in 2012 continues to help our mercy families.
