Spent another day on my piano coatrack, all of it sanding and finishing. So much sanding...
Got the main piano coatrack finished, up next will be the frame

All but four of the keys rotate, but not sure it'll usually be more than a few open at a time.
Process below:
Tumblr media
Sanded from 80, all the way up to 400 grit for the white and black keys. Then started applying some homemade shellac. Ended up doing an amber shellac for the black keys and a blonde shellac for the white keys.
Tumblr media
After about 6 coats of shellac, sanding with 400 grit between the last three layers, I did a few layers of my homemade beeswax finish buffing till smooth.

One Man Went To Rock by Denny Boyce and His Orchestra (1957~, Big Band Jazz/Swing)
went to one of my regular 2nd hand shops today and there happened to be a whole BOX full of 78rpm records, which is already a score for me; but these ones happened to be somehow in like-new condition? these are by far the best preserved 78rpms ive seen in my life. for context, any shellac record produced between 1910-1959 is 95% of the time now a matte texture, completely embedded with decades of dust and mould, the crackles of it often louder than the music thats on the record. These ones were SHINY? their paper card sleeves were pristine and looked new where they're usually ripped and fucked to pieces. This is one of 8 that i bought, and is by far the best sounding pre-60s record i have. wtf. have a listen for yourself, its some funny big band song with a call/response/solo section type deal

i like to imagine shellac's "lomo" logo as the head of albini and weston's little servant
like, a little gnome/goblin/whatever fella helping them out with extra handiwork
(the picture on the right was doodled in the span of listening to their second (post-)peel session, in the manner of a graffiti doodler that miraculously has enought time to not get the police called on them when you'd really expect it)

95-100% ethanol for shellac →
On the recent episode of the MWA podcast, we had a discussion on my favorite finish, and I went on about my love for shellac, and especially seedlac. I've written about why Everclear is a better solvent for making your shellac than denatured alcohol, and one thing to look out for when buying Everclear.
In case you live in a place that doesn't sell 190 proof Everclear, Brian Glendenning let me know about another source for 95% ethanol. Culinary Solvent sells 95% and 100%(!) ethanol. I haven't tried this myself yet, but Brian mentioned that he has 2 gallons of their ethanol, and he didn't complain about it to me.
I have no idea how this is legal, but as Brian mentioned to me, the 2 gallons of it in his shop should disprove any skepticism.

AWESOME SHIT IVE BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY HAVE A PEEP ! ! ! !! !
LONG POST COMING UP UH OH
too lazy to make that 2023 retrospective just yet so instead i'll talk about some of the albums i heard for the first time recently
MEET THE RESIDENTS
(by The Residents)
youtube
got sent this album by a moot and it's honestly one of the most fucking interesting things i've ever heard, it has this kind of silly but nicely off putting sound with the first half being this mish mash of some really odd (and enjoyable) songs that all kinda join up together with some really nice transitions and the second one having longer more ""conventional"" (for this album at least) separate songs, my favorite of which being the one i linked
some seriously good shit i'd recommend anyone reading to give it a listen even if it's not your cup of tea (it definitely is mine)
discovering this kinda stuff is one of the reasons i use tumblr in the first place
CHILDREN OF GOD
(By SWANS)
youtube
on the replies to one of my previous posts i was told this was one of SWANS' peaks and i can't say i disagree, this album is so FUCKING good every single song on it is brimming with atmosphere and there are so many highlights it's hard to choose just one, considering this album came right after Holy Money (the next album on this list, since i listened to both) it's insane how different this album sounds to their earlier stuff, but it's seriously great. haunting album and extensively memorable, definitely one of my favorite SWANS albums.
on the other side of the coin though...
HOLY MONEY
(By SWANS)
youtube
...was probably my least favorite SWANS record! (or maybe Cop)
Mind you, Greed is actually one of my favorites, and i love the way it sounds and how fucking brutal some of the songs on it are, but there's something about Holy Money that really just didn't catch me as much, and i felt the new versions of Greed songs (Fool and Money is Flesh) just really weren't that interesting, and Fool especially kind of diminished the spaciousness i loved so much about the original version.
It's still a very good album (it's SWANS, come on) but it definitely felt like a bit of an afterthought, like leftovers from the previous album that should have just been in it. The live versions of these songs go hard as fuck though listen to PUBLIC CASTRATION IS A GOOD IDEA (yeah) if you want to hear them in their fullest potential. brutal stuff.
and finally..
1000 HURTS
(By Shellac)
youtube
I fucking love Shellac's debut (At ACTION PARK), but never explored much of their work aside from it until i saw this album in a moot's top albums list, and got to thinking damn maybe i should listen to more of their stuff, and boy am i glad i did.
It was very very weird hearing Steve Albini sing after being used to Big Black and the first Shellac album, but i think he did a really solid job and i found myself enjoying his vocals a lot throughout the album
the songs were all really mean and noisy and immaculately produced like any proper Steve Albini project (them god damn drums!!!) and i've been compelled to give it a listen every time i scroll past it on my files. good shit. give it a listen

Finally finished a chest that I've been working on for the last month on and off. It's not perfect and was a bit of a pain to build but it's done and functional. It's hickory panels with oak corners. The panels are pinned mortise and tenons. Main issue is there are some small gaps between the corners and panels. Also I should have offset the short panels and long panels mortise and tenons so that they didn't intersect. The short panels have a rabbit in their mortise so that they don't hit the long panels.

Ended up using a homemade ruby shellac for the finish and I think it really gave it a great color.
Also I originally intended a rounded top, but didn't have the right thickness of stock, nor the patience to do anything complex.
Overall a pretty fun project, however I definitely learned a lot about ways to simplify the design to make it easier to build something similar in the future.

Anyway here is Shellac (he/they) lovely lil beetleboy. I still have no idea about who he is or what he does but i was staring at his page the other week and had an idea for a design pop into my head so HERE they are. They have semi-transparent wings hiding under that elytra :-)
