Santa, Dreams, Wishes, and Presents in Buddy Daddies - SPOILERS!!
The way Santa, wishes, and dreams are presented in this series are quite interesting too. Miri never wishes for material items.
Tumblr media
In Ep. 1, she asks Santa to meet her Papa, in Ep. 11 she asks Santa for her Papas to finish their work soon and be at the Christmas Party.
Tumblr media
Neither Kazuki nor Rei had normal childhoods, so they never believed in Santa, but Miri did. Their dream to protect that is so sweet. Taking down Ryo, leaving the Org, and even Rei wearing the Santa outfit...it's all necessary for that dream to stay a reality for them.
Tumblr media
It's interesting how Santa almost works like some kind of higher power in the series, with the way Miri thanks him after she hugs Kazuki and Rei.
Tumblr media
And, I guess, in the eyes of children, Santa kinda is, right? An all magical being that gives you presents and wishes.
But, I can also easily see how this could morph into an issue when Miri gets older, specifically in her teen years that we see her entering in the Daughter Daddies part of the show.
We see Kazuki kind of fumbling and getting into a mess with his lies to Miri when they dropped her off at the daycare. Rei takes note of this as well, and is able to reel in the situation like he usually does with Kazuki.
Tumblr media
Rei sidesteps the issue as well, but he does provide Miri with a goal or something she can actively do for her mother, to keep her mind of of the fact that her mother wasn’t there (in person).
Tumblr media
During the Daughter Daddies part of Episode 12, we see that Miri knows her mother is dead, since she has her picture of her and talks to it (similar in a way to Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, but likely not to the same extent).
Tumblr media
Kazuki does also mention doing “honest work” now with the diner, but that is a vague sentence. Miri is 14 years old now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they told her that her mother died from cancer and that Kazuki used make money through gambling or something.
Tumblr media
Partial truths.
Raising a teen, especially a high school student, where the mood and atmosphere is different from a junior high school, is so vastly different from raising a toddler. There are different challenges that come with that. Handling hard truths and difficult topics, conversations, and the harshness of reality tends to be key aspects of this time period. Lots realizations about parents and coming to terms with things like that.
So, if Kazuki and Rei did keep the truth about Misaki’s death, their past jobs, and other such related things from Miri in order to preserve her “normal childhood,” then I can see that becoming a topic that could be explored in a potential season 2 or OVA series/episode. Kazuki and Rei struggling to approach the topic with Miri, Miri’s struggle to comprehend and understand it all, maybe even a desire on her part to meet her grandparents, learn more about Misaki, and etc.
There is so much potential there! And that’s just talking about potential dramatic stuff. There is also the more comedic every day stuff (their diner), Miri’s school life, and less intense aspects of raising a teen daughter, especially for two guys. There is a lot of room to explore.
And, of course, if those things never do get explored in an OVA, movie, or Season 2, then at least I know there will be fanfics about this stuff...There probably already are, lol.

2023 in anime
i give ratings out of 10 stars based on a rubric that considers the following:
2 points / ambition of what the anime is trying to achieve 3 points / effectiveness of the anime in achieving its aims 4 points / my personal, subjective enjoyment 1 point / pacing +1/-1 miscellaneous
so with that said… ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (2 anime)
revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky childrens show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else
attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (10 anime)
school rumble – so goddamn funny and i cared about every goddamn character. it’s witchcraft!
trigun – good ole saturday morning cartoons
golden kamuy s3 – how does it keep getting better???!?!
fruits basket – i was a certified hater after s1, but slowly but surely i gave into the melodrama. akito and shigure were EVERYTHING
nana – the most disappointing ending of all time! for one of the greatest anime of all time. manga pls save me!!!
rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai – i’m embarrassed. i cried.
princess tutu – expressionistic, dedicated to storytelling, tremendously kind-hearted. you have to let it move you
blue lock – i’m officially a sports anime girlie
cyberpunk: edgerunners – this was just so slick!
chainsaw man – nothing needs to be said here
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end
oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.
demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared
durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.
gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points
chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.
perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10
vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (7 anime)
buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character
serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s
durarara!!x2 ten
great teacher onizuka – ugh he’s a creep but also heh he’s funny
trigun stampede – they yassified them!
mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites
to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!
terror in resonance – utterly forgettable
dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs
bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope
lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians
classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually
romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it
free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 anime)
wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience
hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.
durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short
land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3 anime)
tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast
mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive
bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems
no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.
⭐⭐⭐ (5 anime)
kamisama kiss – trite imo
given – god save us from anime about perfect people being perfect with each other – but this time set to music!
tokyo revengers s2 – 🤷
natsume’s book of friends – i don’t need vibes this cozy
sasaki to miyano – and i really don’t need vibes this cozy
⭐⭐ (0 anime)
⭐ (0 anime)
& then ongoing shows that i’m not going to rank until i finish them (but actually all are pretty good so far) – skip to loafer, heavenly delusion, spy x family s2, apothecary diaries, jujutsu kaisen s2, frieren: beyond journey’s end, vinland saga s2

best underrated anime in your opinion??
Another wonderful Anon with another difficult yet welcomed question (´。• ω •。`)
I will try to follow the same layout as I did with the manga recommendations ask. These are the anime series that instantly come to mind that, in my humble opinion, are underrated :
Underrated Anime #1 :
91 Days
Why aren't more people talking about this series?! I've watched 91 Days at least a half dozen times, and it never gets old. This anime is set back during the Prohibition Era and follows a young man determined to avenge his family who were murdered by top members of a mob/organized crime family. In order to get close to them, he inserts himself into their world and works his way to the top. I genuinely love this anime so much. It's really sad, but is beautifully written and executed. I highly recommend watching the English Dub, mostly because I think the English voice actors do a perfect job with the accents and turn-of-phrase used during that time period. If you enjoy Crime Dramas, then please give 91 Days a chance. It's a 12 episode anime, so it's definitely manageable. Just be prepared for the ending. Despite watching it several times already... I'm still conflicted lol
Underrated Anime #2 :
Gangsta
I was so disappointed to find out this anime was discontinued, especially since it ended on a cliffhanger. From my understanding, the main cause was due to the production studio going bankrupt. Despite this, I really enjoyed Gangsta enough to hold onto a tiny shred of hope for a second season (I just won't hold my breath lol). Gangsta takes place in a town called Ergastulum and follows two "handymen" who conduct an array of different jobs. This anime is geared towards a mature audience, since it has prostitution, drugs, and other adult-themed elements in it. One unique detail is that one of the handymen, Nicolas, is deaf. If you enjoy darker themes and thrillers, then I'd suggest checking out Gangsta. It's 12 episodes long... Just keep in mind this anime does not have a second season, and may not ever be continued.
Underrated Anime #3 :
Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits
Little known fact about me : I adore supernatural themed anime. Series like Kamisama Kiss, Gugure! Kokkuri-san, Fruits Basket, and others all fit my taste perfectly. Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits is no different. This anime is about a human girl named Aoi who has the ability to see spirits. One day, an ogre appears and takes her back to an inn called Tenjin-ya that is run and patronized by ayakashi. Upon arriving, he reveals that Aoi's grandfather had made a deal with him. In exchange for forgiving the old man's debt, Aoi is to marry the ogre. Refusing the proposal of marriage, Aoi insists on working at the Bed & Breakfast in order to pay off the debt and ultimately earn back her freedom. This is such a wonderful anime. All of the characters are so cute and charming. And I'm a big fan of Aoi! She's not one of those useless or annoying anime protagonists. Quite the opposite, actually. I am currently watching Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, and I'm loving every moment of it. It's 26 episodes long (I'm at episode 18), so a bit longer than the other series I've mentioned. But if you enjoy Supernatural Romance anime with some Comedy sprinkled in, then I highly recommend Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits (:
Underrated Anime #4 :
Aoharu X Machinegun
This is one of the many anime series that I wish would be blessed with a second season. Aoharu X Machinegun is about a high school student named Hotaru who mistakenly accuses her new neighbor, who happens to work as a host, of scamming her best friend. To defend the honor of her friend, Hotaru agrees to play a game of airsoft with the host, Matsuoka. In the process, Hotaru causes an extensive amount of damage before ultimately losing to Matsuoka. He then forces Hotaru to join his airsoft team, stating that it was the best way for Hotaru to pay off her debt. Plot twist : Matsuoka and his teammate, Yukimura, have no idea that Hotaru is actually a girl, a secret she needs to keep after learning that girls are not allowed on their team. This is a really enjoyable 12 episode anime series with a good amount of action, comedy, and some more intense/emotional scenes. So if you're interested in Airsoft or like Comedy and Action anime, then you might wanna check out Aoharu X Machinegun.
Underrated Anime #5 :
Servamp
You can't go wrong with a vampire anime, right? How about vampires that take the form of animals? Servamp fits both criteria. This series is about a boy named Mahiru who takes in what he thinks is a stray cat, only to inadvertently make a contract with a vampire, named Kuro (aka Sleepy Ash of Sloth). Shortly afterwards, Mahiru gets thrust into this once unknown world of vampires when Kuro's brother appears and vows to wage an all-out war against Kuro and their other siblings. I'd say this is arguably one of the better vampire themed anime currently out, at a total of 12 episodes. So if you enjoy Supernatural elements, Vampires, and little touches of Comedy and Action sprinkled in, then I recommend Servamp.
Honorable Mention :
Hakuoki (sometimes spelled Hakuouki)
I am happy to say that unlike some of the other series I listed here, this anime in particular was completed with a total of 3 Seasons, a set of OVAs, and 2 films... Not to mention all of the games for this franchise. This series takes place during the Edo period and follows a young lady named Chizuru. She travels to Kyoto to search for her father, only to be taken into custody by members of the Shinsengumi after witnessing them cutting down individuals who appear to be possessed. Upon realizing who Chizuru's father is, a man responsible for creating an elixir that turns those who drink it into invincible blood lusting beings called Furies, the Shinsengumi members decide to keep Chizuru close, expecting the girl to aid them in their search for her father. Hakuoki is a beautiful anime with even more beautiful artwork. If you enjoy Historical anime with Fantasy elements, then Hakuoki may appeal to you. Note : Hakuoki is also an otome game, so the anime can give off "reverse harem" vibes at times. But if you can overlook that if you're not into otome, then it can still be very enjoyable to watch (:

🌻- YESTERDAY, I got a Shadow the Hedgehog plushie at a comic store because. Anyway, threw on Sonic X (subbed for a change wooo) a few hours later smack in the middle of season 3 to get some Shadow vibes in cuz he is the original scrunkly. …OKAY im actually done talking about him, If I get started on my sonic bs I never stop BUT
It’s absolutely bonkers to me how Sonic X just like…has virtually no music score????? It’s been a minute since I’ve seen Season 1-2 subbed, but Season 3 has barely any compositions at all. And everything is so….slow? You know how anime used to just…stick to one shot or draw something out for a reaaally long time? That’s pretty much every episode. I chalk that up to the mid animation (it’s crazy that this will be the same studio that would eventually handle 2019 Fruits Basket). As much as I do dislike how loud and tonally deaf the 4Kids score is, I did miss the character leitmotifs a bit. I can only imagine what a combo would’ve been like with proper atmosphere. Every now and then I’d HOPE the music would pop off but there’d be whole ass action sequences and score is just a constant low, droning wubwubwubwubwub noise. Once in a blue moon an Adventure 1 event song might play BUT OTHER THAN THAT ITS DEAD SILENCE or wubwubwubwubwub. ITs Just so baffling to me considering how peak the music in the games are, you’d think that’d be utilized in it’s anime. Tho Live and Learn playing at the end of the Project Shadow arc??? Bruh. Cinema.
…Anyway all that said, the Metarex arc is still pretty peak. And I really think Sonic X would’ve benefitted hard from today’s animation standard, cuz it srsly NEEDS that sense of speed to convey the insane stuff more 😩. Though Sonic X as it was would never be made today in the “let’s be safe and squeaky bclean for the brand” landscape. Not enough hurr hurr chili dog 👹 SEE LOOK IM GOING OFF FOREVER THIS IS WHY I CANT GET ON MY BS—-
🌻- If the “talking about watching every disney film” thing ever comes out, I’m dodging copyright by re-drawing the shots we talk about or make new jokes. “But you could just use screenshots” ermmmmmmmm maybe. But what’s MORE extra than trying to go by memory AND try and show off on a thing 80% of people would only strictly listen to? ;) ….Besides, it’d be different I think. Sorta. I’d hope. It’s still in the early stages.
What if I’m not funny whaT if

8 TV Shows
Thanks for the tag @yletylyf <3 <3
Rules: list eight TV shows for your followers to get to know you better! 1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Years, years ago, I sporadically watched earlier seasons of Buffy and enjoyed it for the campy fun they were. And then I watched, "Innocence" - Season 2, episode 14 and I was obsessed with Buffy Summers. Buffy Summers is that one character of all time for me - she is heroic, aspirational but she is also flawed and messy and so delightfully complex. I love her and I forever have a soft spot for Sarah Michelle Gellar for playing her.
Tumblr media
2. Fruits Basket
I first read Fruits Basket as a manga, saw the first anime adaptation and the reboot came out during the pandemic. Fruits Basket is a very important piece of media to me because of the way it tackles abuse and the nature of systemic abuse. The show/ manga's ideas of rehabilitative justice were truly ahead of its time. Also the anti hero of the story is my all time fixation - Shigure Sohma.
Tumblr media
3. Inuyasha
Another long running manga turned anime. Something about this series turns me into a nostalgic goo. It's probably Rumiko Takahashi's brand of characters, where there is something interesting going on with each of them. But my forever love from the series is Sango, the girl who crawls out of her own grave <3
Tumblr media
4. Fushigi Yugi
I greatly dislike the main lead in this anime, I great dislike the romance in this series but my heart went out to the antagonist, the main lead's once best friend Yui Hongo. And if this series wasn't so enamored with its ridiculously cheesy and tiresome main romance (i do not have enough criticism for how truly bad it is, believe me), it had decent worldbuilding and politics. A fact that the original manga author knew and corrected with her spin off prequel - the vastly superior manga Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden (with likable main heroine! an intense romance that never takes over the plot!). She is currently writing Fushigi Yugi: Byakko Senki and I am curious to see what she does there.
Tumblr media
5. Nana
Nana is about my early 20s life lol. Co-dependent, almost romantically charged friendship with a roommate/best friend? Check. Misogynist, controlling boyfriends? Check. Intense but fucked up relationships? Check. It's like this show reached into my heart and displayed it to the world.
Tumblr media
6. Shadow and Bone
I'll be honest: my interest in the show is largely due to the fact that I have read the Six of Crows duology and loved those books. I only read the original Shadow and Bone series recently, just so I can keep with the main plotline in season 2 and boy, the original trilogy is very poor lol. The only thing that has bones of something interesting is Darkling and his relationship with Alina, and watching Season 2, I feel the show writers aren't comfortable tapping into that. Too much time moralising "this is bAd!!" - lol, yes we know. It is very childish finger-wagging writing, and it's very boring and not at all reflective of human experience (Shadow and Bone writers need to watch Nana to understand how to write abusive relationships without making it look like they are doing 'Toxic Ex Boyfriend for Dummies'). The reasons why Crows shine so much is because they are based on books that are good. And I agree with general consensus that the moral universe of the Crows and the Shadow and Bone stories do not match at all, and it creates horrible discrepancies in narrative framing.
Tumblr media
7. Cowboy Bebop
This is a show that has influenced my writing the most: dream-like vigenettes for characters? People dreaming and having nightmares? Characters stuck in the past? I wish I could be as subtle and genre-bending as this show often was. So beautiful.
Tumblr media
8. Death Note
If you have inhaled animes during your teen years, you won't go without bingeing Death Note. Fantastic premise, fantastic protagonist and just outright brutal to watch. I keep returning to it time and again.

8 Shows To Get To Know Me Better
thanks for the tag @bioerin 😊💖 i have spent way too much of my spare time watching tv shows so i had a LOT of options. but i think i’ve narrowed it down to these ones
1. Scum Villain’s Self Saving System - this show is like a son to me. every passing day where there is no season 2 weakens me 😭
Tumblr media
2. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation - the ultimate story about love and war and second chances. it means so much to me <3
Tumblr media
3. Banana fish - this story may have broken my heart, but it’s worth it. i will never watch another love story that impacts me as much as this one did 💔
Tumblr media
4. Hunter x Hunter - i am obsessed with the way yoshihiro togashi wrote this story. it is a shonen fighting anime but the way he writes every single character no matter how minor, how alien, how monstrous, or how heroic… he writes them all so very human. also gon and killua are my sons and i want them to go on fun adventures far FAR away from the plot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Fruits Basket - this show was my childhood! tohru honda was my hero and i wanted to be like her when i grew up (ꈍ ᴗ ꈍ✿)
Tumblr media
6. Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood) - i can’t not include this one! a truly wonderfully written story. the very last episode made me want to smile, weep, and clap at the same time. i don’t think i’ll ever forget this one ❤️
Tumblr media
7. Madoka Magica - i’m a sucker for tragic gay love stories. i’m also a sucker for time-traveling stories that keep me in suspense. and i especially love stories that let their characters be a little selfish a little unhinged and a little evil when it comes to saving a loved one
Tumblr media
8. Midnight Mass - another story that broke my heart but is 100% worth it. a horror story about love, fear, forgiveness, and of course, life and death. it’s SO beautifully written! i literally had to stare at my wall in silence after watching the very last scene. this is one of my all time favorites and i’ve rewatched it countless times ❤️
Tumblr media
tagging: i’m too lazy to tag ppl but whoever wants to add on, please do so 💖

If I were to describe Fruits Basket season 2 in a single word, it would be “solidification.” This season takes everything the first season did and delivers on it with more clarity, more focus, and more determination to see its vision through. By the end of season 1, I loved Fruits Basket; by the end of season 2, I understood it. I understand how it views the cruelty of abuse and the many ways it manifests. I understand how it views the weight of trauma and the different ways it binds people in place. I understand how it views the importance of recovery and the complex, imperfect paths people take on the road to escape their demons. It is one hell of a show, unafraid to dive headfirst into challenging topics and let the raw, imperfect emotions they bring up fester. But it’s equally unafraid to pull those dark emotions back into the light, to show how even through the worst suffering a person can endure, hope will always spring again.
This show is good. It’s really good. My only real issue with this season is- surprise, surprise- the Arisu/Kureno subplot. And it sucks that a show I love so much is intrinsically tied to such a shitty, unsalvageable component. This isn’t just a running joke I can overlook or a background subplot that’s easy enough to ignore; this is an increasingly critical part of Froobs’ plot development. And I hate it. I hate that I can’t just put my head down and ignore this one issue like I did with most of season 1′s problematic aspects, even as season 2 also goes a long way in resolving or repairing those problematic aspects in the midst of this ill-considered age-gap plotline. I want nothing more than to say with my full chest: “Fruits Basket is utterly amazing and I love it with all my heart.” But I can’t. And unless something drastic changes with this subplot, I likely never will.
And yet.
The increasingly godlike character banter. The heart-wrenching backstories for everyone in the Sohma clan. The redemption of Kagura with one of the show’s all-time best episodes. Akito’s ascension to the single most genuinely loathsome anime villain I’ve ever seen. Tohru and Kyo’s absolutely perfect budding romance. Yuki’s incredible self-motivated journey of healing and self-actualization. The increasing weight of Tohru’s own repressed grief and exhaustion. Everything- and I mean everything- about Hatsuharu. This season has been so incredible in so many ways, hit so many heights, accomplished so many feats, filled me with so much joy and laughter even as it breaks my heart into a million pieces...
How could I not love it all the more?
So yes, even with how much I despise the Arisu/Kureno stuff (oh, and I guess I’m still not really sold on the student council either, but that’s a far more minor complaint), Fruits Basket season 2 is a triumph. It’s one of the most affecting stories I’ve ever consumed, something that’s touched me so deeply that I doubt it’ll ever let go. It’s beautiful. It’s remarkable. It’s so, so, so much fun. And whatever waits for us in the final season, I know this show has already earned its place in the pantheon of anime’s most enduring works of art. So until next time, I give this season a score of 9.5/10, a score I give out only to the truly deserving. Will the final season achieve a perfect 10? Only one way to find out.

Anime Update V2 57
Vinland Saga S2 - At long last, I return to this series and jump right into Episode 1 of its second season that aired earlier this year. This episode told the tragic tale of a man named Einar, who lost his homeland, his mother, and his sister in a horrific attack by marauding brutes who took him prisoner and sold him into slavery. At one point he tries to flee only to get found, recaptured, and brutally beaten. At another point we see old man Leif, looking to find his lost nephew among the slaves. At the end, Einar is sold to Ketil to work at his large, vast farm in southern Denmark, where he is introduced to another of Ketil's slaves: a moody, badly damaged young man with dirty blond hair...named Thorfinn. And thus, a connection is made!
Hunter x Hunter - New information regarding how the Chimera Ants operate in their different heirachies and their ongoing breeding patterns is given to us as the Hunters Association is now tasked with fighting and killing the Ants, hoping to slay the Queen before she can give birth to a King. We also got some neat fights of Gon, Killua, and Kite in that order against Chimera Ant footsoldiers sent after them by the big lion guy. And on the side, Colt and the other leading soldiers are discovering the secrets of Nen, continuing to be easily the most intriguing part of the show at this point and I await more from them.
Fruits Basket - First episode of the pair I watched was mostly set at school, with the first half delving into Machi's backstory, how the trauma messed her up, and her blossoming relationship with Yuki, and...OK, which female student council member had the parody "tragic backstory?" Because Machi's backstory just did not click for me AT ALL. I could get the idea behind it and wanted to appreciate it but the execution was absurd; it legit felt like something someone would make up to convey how Fruits Basket does traumatic past-based stories, yet we're meant to take it seriously. I like Machi, but her development with the backstory and romantic material just sucked. Ironically, the second half that put focus onto Yuki's biggest fangirl, Motoko Minagawa, actually landed better and got me more emotional and choked up! Yuki, you took for granted what you had in this girl and her wacky fangirl posse! The one weird part was Naohito having feelings for Minagawa the whole time. THAT'S what he meant when he declared Yuki "his rival" when they first met? C'mon now!
The second episode brought Isuzu and Haru's subplot to its climax in a truly beautiful fashion, along with some payoff for Hiro and Kisa as well, and the best part of all was getting to see Haru grilling Akito for the truth, standing up to her, and coming just short of decking her in the face. Kureno helping Haru to go reunite with Isuzu and Akito starting to break down about this was icing on the cake. I might not be the biggest fan of Kureno but compred to Akito, Ren, Shigure and the head servant, he's a good lad who understands wrong and right.
Re:ZERO - Season 2 is a go for this too, as we're treated to a horrific Happy Ending Override where Rem has ended up vanishing from everyone but Subaru's memories again and a whole bunch of Crusch's soldiers got slaughtered by two new Archbishops of the Witch's Cult, a white haired Simon Laurent and a crazed beastman who talks like Erik Scott Kimerer doing Alexander Polinsky. For some reason, the effect went in reverse for Crusch, as now she's lost her memories of everyone else. The episode's last scene with Subaru and Emilia was nothing short of extraordinary for its pathos, it really got me. Things look to be taking a darker direction for this season, and y'know what? With a show of this quality, sign me the fuck up!
Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works - Now this was a lot more interesting compared to what I'd been watching before. Lots more serious and involved discussion between Shirou, Saber, Rin, and Archer, a scene where Shinji reports to Kirei at his church and he even references his grandfather Zouken, Rin and Shirou staking out to confirm or put to rest any suspicions regarding their bespectacled classmate who lives at the temple, Rin alluding to the true connection she has with Sakura, and Shirou thinking back to Kiritsugu and why he's adopted the "hero of justice" ideals from him to the point of a stubborn, unhealthy Savior Complex. Good stuff to see get adapted.
Symphogear GX - I thought Hibiki's father seemed bad, and Tsubasa's father also seemed cold and unloving, but now we get the full truth about her birth...her grandfather is thought to be her biological father who impregnated his own daughter in law just to breed a worthy family heir and spite his two sons. DEAR GOD. Seeing how fucked up this clan is, it was unsurprising to learn that Tsubasa's father was wanting to protect his girl from dealing with it all. What was very surprising was the full extent of Carol's plan, which turned every triumph the girls had made against her Dolls upside down into defeats that only got Carol closer to her objectives, and how she accomplished so much just by spying through Elfnein's eyes. The two biggest delights here were more of Chris bonding with Kirika and Shirabe as their senpai and working together to kick ass, and the glorious return of none other than DR. VER! Extra batshit as ever and still claiming himself to be a hero, he's with Carol and the Autoscorers now! Can this possibly get any wilder? I sure hope so!
Eureka Seven - On errands with Eureka and her kids, Renton meets a kind elderly lady who turns out to be a Vodarac religion member and a suspected terrorist who Holland is after in order to turn her in and collect the bounty on her. The morality of what Gekkostate is doing suddenly gets a lot blurrier to Renton, and he and Holland now clearly have more than a few issues with each other even in spite of Holland coming through in the end to ensure the old lady evades the military after he's taken his pay. Eureka is still awesome, though!
Gintama - So this might've been my absolute favorite episode of Gintama yet. Just all the ways they played with the "whodunnit" mystery genre while also lampooning stalkers, selfish, dishonest and unloving boyfriends, and tight parental control without the child's input all in one hilariously twisty and turny episode kept me immensely engrossed and entertained from start to finish. Also, Otsu continues to be surprisingly amazing, and we even get the backstory for why Shinpachi became such a die-hard fan of her, with the one thing that distracted me is that suddenly she's singing in Japanese even in this dub; did the constant English singing of "Your Father's Bleep Bleep" face such backlash that they dared not attempt a dubover of Otsu's songs again? Ah well, that's no big loss at all!

third of the way through episode ten current rankings for actors most deserving of a fruit basket and sympathetic hug after what was wrought at the hands of this show
3.  juno temple, having to spend half a season playing what used to be the most fun and exuberantly joyful character in the show as doing just kinda okay or miserable, isolated from all of the scene partners she had the most chemistry excepting waddingham, lackluster exploration of how the break up affects her character as she is immediately paired up with a rando who has been lightly touched with personality in the same way la croix has flavor, complete failure to develop her workplace so that it supports the main themes of the show.  at least she gets to be in gay love for a little while.  also the hair department did her no favors.
2.  toheeb jimoh, less screentime but boy is it wasted, every plot involving his nigerian heritage should count as a micro aggression, any follow up on the rebecca plotline is deferred, the main multi-episode spanning plot of his character, until we only have a quarter of the episode runtime to fit it in.
1.  nick mohammed, all of his excellent character work of season two was thrown in the trash but only after it had first been taken out back and shot

[Recommendation] Picking Up Older Works Now
Tumblr media
Source: Promotional images for Sailor Moon, Inyuasha, and Naruto
By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting
It has never been easier than now to pick up older anime. Older works are widely available on legal streaming sites like the YouTube channels of official license holders, Crunchyroll, Netflix, Funimation, Peacock, HIDIVE, and more. Moreover, many older works can be watched for free online without the need for a membership.
Although some older anime may contain what would now be considered questionable content, such as nudity in Ranma 1/2, many still hold a valuable place in the anime community and history of animation.
As an “older” fan of anime, I’ve been reflecting on the merit of older works and how I might recommend them to new fans of the medium. While newer fans may be drawn to recent anime, I believe that older, slightly more obscure works are worth exploring, especially since they are readily available.
Many series that I once considered recent are now five to six+ years old. The works that introduced me to anime are even older, and their graphics may not be appealing to new fans. Additionally, remakes of these series may lack the same charm that the original works had within the community.
Still, I’d like to argue in favor of giving older works a try. Many older series have seen revivals, such as Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket. Longer ongoing series like One Piece, Naruto/Boruto, and Dragon Ball also have continued fan appreciation.
While I understand that some new fans may be overwhelmed by the length of these longer series, there are other options available. Some big ones for me include CLAMP’s other significant works like xxxHolic or Tsubasa Chronicles, and shounen like Detective Conan, which is still airing to this day with a largely episodic format for easy pick-up. These works, along with many others, are available but overlooked by many newer fans in favor of more popular series like Cowboy Bebop or Card Captor.
Finding a title of interest can be as simple as Googling older series that are similar to something you are into now or picking up works that are ongoing but lack the same complicated history regarded in serialization as some of the bigger works do. In my personal experience, looking up older works led me to Saiyuki, which has since become one of my favorite series of all time. It has multiple seasons and sparks my interest not just because of the action parts but also because of the introspective moments that likely stem from its source material.
Who knows? You might discover a new favorite series that has been overlooked for far too long. I certainly have!

Winter 2023 Faves
So, this was a season.
Nothing wrinkled my brain – No Bocci or Do It Yourself!! – but these were enjoyable company with my morning muffin. No ranking this time, but here’s my top four:
Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi
Tumblr media
(Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill) AKA A Boy and His Dog: The Isekai
An isekai’d salaryman whose superpower is an Amazon account – I kinda think this is what The Shield Hero should have been.
I’m a sucker for great animal sidekicks, and Veldora, I mean Fenrir the super-wolf is absolutely adorable, no matter how obnoxious. And who can forget rat boy, I mean baby slime? If you’re gonna Rimiru, then female child soldier/swiss army knife is an another adorable merchandising opportunity.
And extra points for the cooking tips, but all your wyvern stew and orc-burgers made my chicken nuggets and buttered noodles feel even more like peasant food.
They handled the repeating gags well, and all the characters from goddesses to butchers are well written. But Ash Ketchum (or whatever he’s called in this show) needs to grow a damn pair.
Kyuuketsuki Sugu Shinu 2nd Season
Tumblr media
(The Vampire Dies in No Time 2nd Season) AKA Stupid, Stupid Vampire
In a stronger season, this would have been a Returning Champion, but in Winter 2023, being such a solid player bumped it into the leaderboard.
Always amusing and queer and weird and I like everybody in it. I think it had already found its groove in season 1, but the S2 opening titles were WAY better. Like, I would sometimes actually watch them instead of skipping.
It always left me smiling, and I hope we get a season 3.
Rougo ni Sonaete Isekai de 8-manmai no Kinka wo Tamemasu
Tumblr media
(Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement) AKA Isekai Lesbian Capitalist
More like Little Orphan Anime, am I right? 😃 Or maybe The Legend of Tanya The Merchant.
I sometimes got too busy to keep up with all the shows, but this one kept me coming back week after week.
On the one hand, I can see where they painted over what'sername from Bookworm, but on the other, I don’t care.
I was amused by how the world would bend implausibly to conform to our Mary Sue’s ambitions. The king just shows up unannounced at a restaurant to foil the machinations of an evil merchant? Sure, babe. I think I saw that same thing in an old episode of Three’s Company.
IDK if we’ll see more of her, but she’s my imaginary friend, and I’m glad she her dukedom got.
Benriya Saitou-san, Isekai ni Iku
Tumblr media
(Handyman Saitou in Another World) AKA I Had To Die and Be Reincarnated In Another World To Finally Get Some Fucking Appreciation
I was surprised by how quickly I fell for this. I think I needed something to take the place of Picking Up Girls In Dungeons, and this satisfied. Plus, dick jokes!
I also liked how it would mix it up between short four panel gags and longer arcs. Fave found family show of the season.
The rest of my watch list:
Isekai Will Never Die:
Isekai Nonbiri Nouka (Farming life in another world) AKA What If Superman Was A Farmer?: Harem Isekai AKA Indolence Is Sin: Part 2
Isekai Ojisan (Isekai Uncle) AKA I’m You But Better, You Fucking Neet
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko 2nd Season (By the Grace of the Gods 2nd Season) AKA Isekai Slime Tamer AKA Indolence Is Sin: Part 1
Shin Shinka no Mi: Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei (The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made 2nd Season) AKA My Kawaii Gorilla Wife: The Isekai
Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei (The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady) AKA Isekai Lesbian Princess and Her Harem
Wholesome and Adorable:
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu 2nd Season (I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense 2nd Season) AKA VR Is Life
Sugar Apple Fairy Tale AKA A Girl and Her Hot Elf Tsundere AKA Medieval Fruits Baskets
Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! (Tomo Chan is a Girl!) AKA My Dude, Just Make Your Fucking Move Already!!!
Tsundere Akuyaku Reijou Liselotte to Jikkyou no Endou-kun to Kaisetsu no (Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte) AKA My Dude, She’s Sitting Right Next To You, Make Your Fucking Move Already!!!
Edgelords Assemble!:
Hyouken no Majutsushi ga Sekai wo Suberu (The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World) AKA Dorm Room Workout Bros: No Homo
Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! (The Eminence in Shadow) AKA Isekai Edgelord: Utlimate
Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai wo Sukuu you desu (Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save The World) AKA The Emo Quartet and Their Talking Sword
Returning Champions:
Several second seasons, but nothing that qualifies as a “Returning Champion”. Picking Up Girls In Dungeons or Hero Academia might have been included, but for the fact I’ve lost interest in them and stopped watching.
Pour One Out For Interspecies Reviewers:
Oniichan wa Oshimai! (Onimai: I’m Now Your Sister!) AKA Eromanga Sensei 2nd Season - This was animated with so much love – of boobies!!! (hehehe) But seriously, mad love to all my eroanime senseis out there. Your commitment to never half-assing the job of making beautifully drawn sex farces is greatly appreciated. You are doing God’s work.
And one for my “Definitely Eventually Watch” list:
Lupin Zero AKA Lupin: Year One
