How I made my First Pair of Fursuit Paws!

Good afternoon friends! I just finished making my first ever pair of fursuit paws for Anthrocon 2022, and I’d like to share step-by-step how I made them.

Ok! Now that that’s out of the way, lets get started!

First up, I begin making my fursuit paws by printing out the paper template pieces and labeling them for convenience. I then use these templates to cut out both the fur, claws, and inner lining.

 As a note for what materials I used, the paws consisted of vinyl fabric for the claws, faux shag fur, spandex for the lining, and bias tape.

Now, I cut these materials out in my dorm room during my time at college, but I didn’t realize I would have little to no time to actually make them. So, jumping a couple of months later during the summer, I finally got to work on them.

The first thing I did was take the fur and sew the sides up using my sewing machine. The fur was a bit of a nuisance as it got a little caught in the machine, but I managed it! You may also notice the black T on the left side, this is so that I know where to place the thumb claw once that step would arrive.

Once this was done, I got to work on sewing the claws with the sewing machine. This was the most repetitive and somewhat frustrating step when making the paws. They consist of three pieces each for four fingers in total, so that’s 24 pieces I had to sew together!

After this, I worked on the inner lining. The lining is there so that when wearing the paws they’re a lot more soft and comfortable; not brushing up against the rough insides of the faux fur. The spandex curled up a lot around the edges, but pinning them into place with plastic clips help tremendously!

Now onto the slightly scary part: Sewing the claws onto the fur. I pinned all of the claws into place and attached them to the fur.

This is what they looked like when sewn on! Note that the other side is not attached to the claws, this will be the next step.

Pinning the claws again into place, I pushed them into the opening that has yet to be sealed up.

I connected the claws to both sides of the fur and sewed the claws together, this helped closed up any holes in between them and on the sides.

This took quite some time with some trial and error. I would flip the fingers inside out only to notice a prominent hole that I missed. On top of this, the thumb on the left hand was positioned incorrectly and I had to take it off and redo it all over again. It was kinda headache inducing.

While I don’t have a picture for this step, what I did next was flip the paw inside out! I carefully pushed the claws through the bottom hole and popped them out. If you’re wondering why I didn’t include the lining, it’s because it would’ve taken a lot of time and stress to add that, as I would have to hand sew it to the inside and the sizing of the lining was off. It would’ve pushed me back A LOT so I decided to skip the step. 

Once I flipped the paws inside out I stuffed them with poly-fil and began to shave down the palms, giving the fur a good brushing. I then took the black bias tape, clipped them to the bottom of the paws, and hand sewed them. For the final step, I gave the paws a good spritzing of cherry cheesecake fursuit spray by Contact Caffeine and brushed them out again. The paws were finally completed!

These are the final products! I really enjoy how they came out and for my first time they don’t look half bad!
