Pavement Co-founder, Former Drummer Gary Young Dies at 70
- “Without Gary, many people would not have noticed us,” band says
Gary Young, the co-founding Pavement drummer who was with the band from 1989 to 1993, has died, Stephen Malkmus said.
“Gary Young passed on today,” the Pavement frontman said Aug. 17 on social media without giving a cause.
“Gary’s Pavement drums were one-take-and-hit-record. Nailed it so well.”
Young appeared on four EPs and Pavement’s debut long-player, 1992’s Slanted and Enchanted before leaving the group.
“Without Gary, many people would not have noticed us,” Pavement said in a statement. “In all of the best ways, he was a freak show. He was magnetic. He was magical. He was dangerous. We could think of him as an uncle, an older brother that none of us had.”
Young’s post-Pavement activities included recording three solo albums under the Gary Young’s Hospital banner.
“Gary had FUN, and those of us who got to hang with him will never forget this amazing cat … what an honor and what a gift sweet Gary was,” Thurston Moore said on social media.

Pavement - Bogart's, Long Beach, California, May 29, 1992
So long to the Plant Man! We said goodbye to the one and only Gary Young earlier this month — one of rock and roll's great drummers and individuals. His time with Pavement was brief, but the band obviously wouldn't have happened without his Stockton studio, his awesome fills and his dazzling onstage headstands.
"Gary loved tension," Pavement wrote in their fond remembrance. "He wanted to make people excited and anxious. He accomplished both. We embraced him and he taught us myriads of things that we never thought about. He was an educator. In many ways, we were his apprentices."
Louder Than You Think, a documentary about Young has been making the festival rounds lately, but I haven't had the chance to see it. Until then, let's listen to some Gary-era Pavement from back when Slanted and Enchanted was buzzing its way into our brains. This Long Beach audience tape via the Acid Casualties channel is fairly raw, but it hearkens back nicely to the scratchy vibes of those first recordings that Spiral and SM made with Young. Perfect sound forever, people!

Remembering Gary Young 1953-2023
Musician and producer Gary Young has died at 70. He was the drummer for Pavement from 1989 to 1993.
He was a little older than the rest of the band and had a recording studio they recorded in. He played on the band's debut and greatest album, 1991's Slanted and Enchanted. Whenever you see a greatest albums of all time or of the 90s, that is always on the list. It's a gem of indie rock and low-fi! Just listen to "Summer Babe" if you don't believe me. After leaving the band in 1993, he reunited with them for a few shows in 2010. I saw Pavement after Young's departure at the 1995 Lollapallooza Festival.
