Here is another Faye and Spike fanfic. Who else?
DOG DAYS
She was making a hell of a noise, but it's not like she could help it. Her movements were slow and uncoordinated. She crashed into a pile of junk that fell to the ground, she closed her eyes, even under her feet the sound seemed far away.
When she turned around Spike was pointing his Jerico at her. She gave a little gasp, startled, and clutched the first aid kit to her chest. Damn silent idiot. Damn blind idiot who didn't seem to recognize her, suddenly his expression changed completely, as if he was seeing a ghost.
"Will you stop aiming at me? Or are you planning to finish me off like a dying horse?" her voice sounded exhausted. She was. She was also drunk, or at least there were traces of alcohol in her system.
"What the hell happened to you?" he asked annoyed and scanning her as he lowered the gun.
"I had a happy argument with an idiot about the right to speak out " she replied with sarcasm. "f you'll excuse me, I'm very tired and want go to sleep."
She made a couple of steps, clumsy and slow, but her legs didn't feel like cooperating on her way to the room. She was going to fall to the ground and was doubtful that she could extend her arms to stop the impact. She closed her eyes, ready to take the hit of her life, and maybe lose a tooth, all for show.
Luckily Spike's chest broke her fall.
"Oooh," Faye said as she sensed the smell of tobacco and something she couldn't identify, invading her every sense. " That was fast."
" Were you planning on kissing the floor?" Spike asked helping her to stand up.
"I doubt I can extend my arms," she whispered against the yellow fabric of the shirt, inhaling his scent again. "You smell so good..."
"Can you walk?" the sound of Spike's heartbeat against her ear seemed to lull her to sleep.
"I guess, " she pulled away from him.
Each wince was worse than the last. Spike, who hadn't left her side, slipped his arm around her waist and almost carried her into the bedroom.
She sat on the bed with the first aid kit still under her arm and placed it on her lap.
"Are you going to stare at me like that all the time?" Faye asked trying to open the damn box, she wasn't able to, the pain was excruciating, she'd have to add a broken wrist to the list.
Spike seemed to notice, because he snatched it out of her hands.
"You're a fucking mess ," Spike mumbled angrily.
"Don't yell at me."
"I didn't."
"Your voice sounds so loud then...," Faye just wanted him to leave her alone, lick her wounds and sleep until the end of the world came.
"Don't move," he commanded.
"Where do you think I'm going - on a bender?" she grumbled wryly.
"Shut up, Faye."
Spike disappeared from her sight without another word, but she stood very still, staring at the door, which seemed to ripple.
"First you should wipe off all the blood on your face, " she didn't realize Spike had returned until she heard his voice.
Faye reached out her hand tentatively so Spike could pass her the soaked towel he had brought with him. But he came over to her and squatting down, Spike gently began to run it over her forehead, her cheeks, meticulously wiping the already dried blood from her face. She was incapable of saying anything, except to stare at him in disbelief, his mannerisms were delicate and kind, definitions that in her life she would have dared to put next to Spike. Every time she complained, Spike clicked his tongue in annoyance.
"Thank you," she whispered as he set the towel aside.
Spike looked at her seriously, as he examined her face closely.
" Now what kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into?"
"I didn't do anything!" she protested angrily.
"I see," he mumbled in exasperation looking her up and down again
"Your jacket is soaked with blood, take it off."
"No," she protested. "It's okay."
"Don't be a baby," he retorted. "Take off your jacket."
She gave him an indignant look, but the way he was staring at her made her nervous. So she decided to listen to him. She put her hand to her zipper, but her arms hurt and she gave up the attempt.
"It hurts," she said rubbing her wrist.
"Fuck Faye," he replied throwing his hand to her zipper.
Anyway, she had been trying to avoid that moment. Spike's eyes widened as he saw her t-shirt torn to shreds.
"Faye..." Spike was looking at her with an intense stare and his hands trembled as he pulled away from her.
"Don't look at me like that, " Faye snapped upset, covering herself with one arm. "It's embarrassing enough that you have to help me."
"Are you okay?" he looked genuinely concerned and made her shiver.
"Yeah...," he sighed. "Nothing happened."
"Sure?"
"Yeah," her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't want to cry in front of him, she took a deep breath trying to pull herself together and shook her shoulders. "Nothing happened, it was just a horrible night."
" All right... Where's all this blood coming from? Where did you get hurt?" he pulled the jacket away from her shoulders looking for open wounds.
"The blood isn't mine," Faye muttered through her teeth.
Spike looked at her again in that indecipherable way while helping her take off her jacket.
"Do you want to put something else on?" he asked looking in horror at the bruises on her arms.
"Yes, please," she was half naked, covered in blood and terribly tired, she couldn't imagine any worse situation. "Can you bring me another shirt? In the drawers there's got to be some."
Spike stood up, moving over to the closet as she pulled off the tatters of her shirt and finished cleaning herself.
"I cut his throat," Faye finally said looking at the blood stained towel, everything around her seemed blurry, the only vision she was able to focus on was that damn towel. . " He...I couldn't get him off me, he was so much stronger than me..... I had never seen so much blood..."
"He deserved it," he replied earnestly, passing her the shirt.
"Yes..."
Faye felt like crying again when she found herself unable to dress herself. Her ribs ached, everything ached.
"Leave it to me," before she could protest Spike was already pulling the T-shirt over her head and helping to put it on. "I have to examine your wrist."
"I know..."
Spike held her arm gently and sighed in frustration. She tried her best not to complain but the truth was that it hurt like hell. Spike bit his lips angrily as he patted along the length of her arm. The bruises looked really shocking in contrast to the pallor of her skin.
"It's not broken," he said as he rifled through the bandages in the kit until he found a new bundle. After placing a piece of metal to keep it straight, he bandaged it tight. "You should hold it up."
She tried to smile as he began to put away the rest of the bandages in the first aid kit. Spike didn't look at her, he was focused on tidying each and every item inside.
"I've got a anti-bruise cream, it's pretty good..." Spike said with his eyes fixed on the box.
He stood up again and left her alone in the room. She flopped down on the bed exhausted, letting sleep overcome her for good.
When Faye opened her eyes again, she was inside the sheets, but she didn't remember taking off her shoes or getting into them. Bringing the hands to her face, she discovered a pair of band-aids over her eyebrow and cheek. The pot of cream was on her bedside table. Faye sat up and spread the cream as best she could over her arm. She got out of bed, she was thirsty and the pain was worse than before she went to sleep.
She went to the kitchen to drink a glass of water. There was a dim light in the living room, Spike was watching TV in the dark. He turned to look at her. He was inscrutable, she couldn't decipher what he was thinking. She smiled tiredly at him, but he didn't move a muscle in his face.
"Did I wake you up?" Spike asked turning down the volume on the TV.
"No, I was thirsty," she replied raising the glass full of water.
She didn't feel like being alone, but she didn't know whether to stay or not.
"How are you?" he asked, offering a hand towards her.
Her heart skipped a beat and she froze. He blinked as if waking from a dream and withdrew his hand.
Faye sat down next to him and picked up the pack of cigarettes from the table, it was hard to maneuver with only one hand. She bit into the cigarette and before she tried to reach for the lighter the flame appeared before her eyes. She smiled frankly and Spike smiled back.
"What are you watching?" she asked full of curiosity.
"Boxing."
"Oh," she settled back on the couch as best she could. Spike watched her out of the corner of his eye. She heard him sigh and look back at the screen.
The boxing match broke for the news. They had found the body, Faye felt the air around her thicken, her attacker was a notorious criminal. She could barely hear the broadcaster over the pounding of her heart. He had been put in jail for torturing, raping and murdering six women. He'd escaped a few days ago. Spike reached for the TV remote.
"No," her hand was shaking but she still wouldn't let him change the channel.
Faye didn't realize she was crying until she felt the tears on her lips.
"You don't have to watch this crap," Spike said turning off the TV.
Not sure if she had heard him correctly, Faye was only aware of her heart beating. She tried to fill her lungs with air, but failed.
"Faye?"
She couldn't breathe, she put her hands to her chest and dug her nails in, as if she could tear her skin off to make way for oxygen.
"Breathe," Spike held her by the shoulders, forcing her to look him in the eyes. "It's all over."
She couldn't speak, couldn't stop crying. She hugged Spike who ran his hands through her hair and placed them on her back. She was choking, she tried to catch her breath again, but all she managed was an agonized whimper. Spike pulled away from her. His confused and panicked expression made her even more frightened.
"Please, Faye, breathe," he cupped her face with both hands. "Don't fuck with me, do it very carefully, slowly."
Spike took a slow breath, not taking his eyes off her. She focused on the small change in hue between his eyes as he tried to mimic Spike's slow, methodical breaths. Tears were still slipping down her face, but she felt herself regaining control. Spike wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled, resting his forehead against hers.
" That' s right," his voice sounded calm. "That's it, a little at a time."
Faye rested her head on Spike's shoulder and closed her eyes, while he kept stroking her hair. Her heartbeat didn't seem to calm down, yet she was able to breathe. She felt Spike wrap his arms around her, pulling her closer. Spike radiated a cozy, pleasant warmth, that comforted her. Faye was grateful for his silence and the way he ran his fingers through her hair. She was grateful he let her cry and that he was there. She let out a barely inaudible "thank you" against his chest. She heard him swallow and laugh nervously. He squeezed her in his arms before releasing her.
"Will you be able to breathe on your own or are you tricking me into giving you mouth-to-mouth?" Spike joked as he gave her one of his unmistakable smiles.
"Ha! You wish you could put your lips on mine," she replied looking sideways at him and plopping down on the back of the couch.
"I quit boxing?" he asked casually turning the TV back on.
"Not a chance, there's a show about cosmetic operations gone wrong on channel 93, put it on."
"I'm not putting that crap on."
"Give me the remote, Spiegel."
"Over my dead body, Romani."

“Y/N!”
You heard a muffled version of your name being called, where was it coming from? Slowly, you opened your eyes and blinked several times. As you looked around you, you couldn’t process what was happening. All you knew in that moment was that your ears were ringing something fierce and your whole body hurt.
“Y/N!!”
The force of the yelling of your name caused your mind to clear, allowing you to evaluate the situation around you. You looked to your left, finding Sam unconscious next to you with blood running down his face. Looking to your right, you saw the smashed in passenger side of the Impala. Your first thought was, Dean is gonna be pissed.
Dean.
You looked to the driver’s seat to see Dean looking back at you. Leaning against the door, he was the only one conscious besides you.
“Fuck, finally. Are you alright?”
You mentally took stock of your body, everything sore but nothing hurting until you got to your right leg. As you tried to move it, you let out a yelp.
“Ah! Shit, fuck, I think my leg is broken. And my wrist is still messed up.” You took a deep breath and leaned back against the seat, looking back at your brother, “What about you? Are you alright?”
Dean sighed, “I’m fine. I hit my head and I think I may have sprained my wrist. We just need Gigantor to wake up now.”
You both looked at Sam who was still unconscious, “Think he’s alright?” you asked.
“He’s got a thick skull; he should be fine.” Dean shrugged and let out a small laugh.
“Screw you, Dean.”
You both turned to see Sam finally starting to sit up. He let out a small groan and put a hand against his head, blood coating it when he pulled it away.
“So, someone wrecked the Impala again?” He asked as he checked a cut on your forehead, you pushing him away so you could check his.
Dean’s face immediately turned red, “Whenever I find this asshole it’s gonna be a long, painful death.”
In the moment after Dean stopped talking, you heard something. You turned your head towards the crashed side of the car.
“What is it?” Sam asked in a low voice.
“Shh.”
In the silence, you heard people talking outside the car but couldn’t make out the words. But they were getting closer.
“Go, grab her. I’ll take care of the brothers,” you heard a muffled male voice say.
“Damn,” you swore as you knew there was no escaping this situation.
“What?” asked Dean.
“Demons. They’re here for me.” You told your brothers, causing Sam to sigh and Dean to swear.
“No way. They aren’t taking you.” Dean tried to get to you in the backseat but with his injuries, it was impossible.
At that moment the backside passenger door was ripped off, revealing a dark-haired man and a blonde woman. Their eyes flashed black, confirming your suspicion of them being demons.
“Time to go princess,” the man said in a low baritone.
You sneered at him, “One, fuck you. Two, I can’t go anywhere. My leg’s broken.”
“That sounds like a you problem, Winchester,” the woman quipped.
“Hey bitch.” You turned to see Dean holding a container of holy water, which was your cue to duck. He flung holy water onto the demons causing them to hiss and step away from the Impala.
“Nice band-aid Dean but that’s not really a permanent solution.”
“Hey at least it was something! They aren’t taking you Y/N! We got plenty of holy water to hold out until Bobby comes, I sent him a text.”
“Oh god you texted Bobby, we’re doomed,” you let out a small laugh at the fact you were mostly right; you didn’t think Bobby even knew how to send a text.
“Nice one, Dean-o. But I don’t think your fancy water will work on me.”
You all turned to see Lucifer occupying the space his demons had vacated moments before. Dean and Sam’s eyes were dinner plates, shocked at Lucifer’s brazen actions. But you, you were dealing with the rush of emotions that hit you once you saw him.
Fear, longing, attraction. It almost felt like a force was pulling the two of you together. It took a great deal of your willpower not to jump into the archangel’s arms and allow him to whisk you away.
Lucifer turned towards you and met your eyes, “Good to see you again, angel.” He said with a smirk.
“Hi Lucifer,” you deadpanned, trying to ignore not only the pain in your leg, but also the awkwardness of the situation.
“Oh angel, always broken in some way when I find you.”
“Seriously? Your demons are the ones who hurt her! Twice!” Dean yelled at the devil.
Lucifer turned to Dean as his eyes flashed red, “I’m sorry was I talking to you? No, I was not. Now if you don’t mind Winchester’s, your sister will be coming with me now.”
Lucifer stuck a hand toward you, gesturing for you to take it. You felt Sam squirm as he attempted to get closer to stop you. Turning to both your brothers, you gave them soft smiles. “I love you both, and hopefully I’ll see you soon.”
A single tear streaked down your face as you realized there was a very real possibility you’d never see them again. But you had to go with him. Not only would the connection not let you leave without him this time, but you knew if you tried there was a likelihood he’d take out his frustrations on your brothers.
“No. CAS!” Dean yelled as you took Lucifer’s hand, feeling the familiar sensation of his grace throughout your body as you did. It healed every wound you had as you stepped out of the crushed Impala.
There was a sound of fluttering wings that came from behind you, and as you turned you saw Castiel by the driver’s side door. He began to help Dean who, after being healed, demanded the angel save you.
Cas looked from Dean and met your gaze. You sent him a small prayer, Take care of them for me.
With a sigh, Cas nodded and ignored Dean’s order and began to help Sam. When they both were healed, they stepped out of the car, all turning to face you. You were standing next to the devil, his arm looped around your shoulders. Without them even having to verbalize it, you knew this sight crushed your brothers.
“Please, Lucifer don’t do this,” Sam pleaded.
“Sorry boys, she’s mine. I don’t want you disrupting us again either.” He raised his hand to snap his fingers and do God knows what but you stopped him with your hand on top of his.
“No, please. Don’t hurt them. I know you’re angry but they won’t separate us again. Please.” Lucifer took in your pleading look and lowered his hand, nodding. He’d go to the ends of the Earth if you asked, so sparing your brothers was no big deal.
Lucifer turned to the three men, “Laters, Losechesters.” And with a snap, you both were gone.
Dean swallowed hard and looked down, trying to stop the tears the felt coming. He’d failed you, again. Sam’s head just dropped with the weight of not only your absence, but the guilt of letting it happen. They turned to Cas, almost pleading with the angel over what to do next.
Castiel sighed, “There is nothing we can do. She’s made her choice, now it is time we trust her to do the right thing.”

Will she be able to help save the ghost band from their curse or will it all blow up in their faces? Especially when a summer love blossoms between one of the ghost boys and herself.
Pairings: Ghost!Luke x Fem!Reader
______
A few days had passed since the accident in the studio, [y/n] staying away from the boys most of the time, being buried in her books. Being stuck in group calls with her other four friends, who were putting in their input as they finalized the plan.  Julie, had stayed away from her cousin, being busy with rehearsals most of the day, the only time they’d hang out with the boys is later at night. They had been a nice distraction she desperately needed at the moment, along with growing closer to Luke. Growing completely frustrated on trying to figure out where and how to find the final piece, the books having very little information in them. Growling softly to herself, she flung her arms, the books flying through the air as they landed with a thud around her.
“Everything alright, [y/n]?” Closing her eyes, she hung her head in between her arms from their perch on the kitchen table. Glancing up, she took in her cousins worried look, not even bothering with worrying about the boys concern.
“I’m fine, Jules.” Both girls knew she was lying through her teeth, but the one never questioned it, knowing how stressed the other had become in the past few days. “Just..”
“Overworked?”
“Burnt out?” Rolling her eyes as they all called something out to her, before feeling someones hands on her shoulder, rubbing them softly as she hung her head again, muscles relaxing lightly.
“Gee.. feel the love guys.” Murmuring softly, flickering her wrist once more as the books and papers went back to normal. Coming to rest beside her, all of them murmuring at once that they’d never get used to that. Shaking her head softly, she sat in the chair next to her, letting Luke’s hands continue to relax her muscles.
“How’s the rehearsal for your gig tomorrow going?” [y/n] softly asked, trying to change the subject onto something else to redirect her mind. The boys grinned, Reggie going off on how it was going so well, but she could detect something was bothering them, and had a feeling it had to do with Caleb. Julie caught her cousins look, giving her a reassuring smile, before asking the boys to give them a little bit of privacy. In return they, Reggie and Luke, whined, as Luke held on closer to [y/n]. Rolling her blue eyes, she reassured him it was fine and that she’d come find them all later to hang out like normal. He smiled softly in return, kissing the side of her head, murmuring he’d be looking forward to it, before disappearing with the rest of the guys.
“Alright, what’s going on with the boys?” Julie took a seat next to her, letting her eyes aim at the counter, already feeling like her heart was gonna break just with how her cousin was acting. Jules fidgeted for a few moments, trying to figure out the best way to tell her, before just ripping the band aid off.
“They figured out what their unfinished business was,” Letting out a sigh, Julie turned to her cousin, “Its playing at the Orpheum.” [y/n] could only take in the information being told to her, heart breaking in two, trying not to show it. She knew, she shouldn’t have fallen for the guitarist. Knowing it’d lead to just heartbreak. They were two different people, one living and the other a ghost. A situation without a happy ending.
“I see.. and that’s where you guys are playing tomorrow right?” Murmuring, glancing over at Julie, knowing she was breaking on the inside too. The boys becoming like older brothers to her.
“Yeah..” Silence fell over the two of them, each dwelling in their own thoughts. [y/n] feeling like she failed to save the boys, failing Luke, hitting hard. Her hands trembling slightly, before feeling Jules place her hands on top of hers.
“You didn’t fail them, cous. We both knew the day would come, they’d cross over and leave us for good.” Jules own eyes tearing up, blinking away the tears.
“I did fail them Jules. The power I’m looking for is called, Light of Life.” Taking a shaky breath to calm herself down before continuing. “The Light of Life, gives the ghosts an option.. They’re faced with the decision to either return to the living or they can cross over. That was all I got out of grandfathers book.” Letting her forehead rest on the table, she closed her eyes, biting her lip in attempt to muffle her sudden cries. Julie gasped, covering her mouth, her own tears falling as she latched onto [y/n].
“You want them to stay.. you’re totally in love with Luke aren’t you..” She whispered, finally figuring it all out. On why she felt she failed the boys, “I’m so happy for you, you deserve the happiness.”
“Jules.. I’m not going to be able to be happy, they’re crossing over tomorrow. There won’t ever be a Luke and I after that. He’ll be gone and I’ll be stuck in the living helping ghosts cross over, until my unfortunate death.”  Pointing out, knowing how quickly she forgot the little issue. Both of them staying quiet for the time after, unaware that they had three little ghosts listening in on their conversation. Neither of the three knew what to say, or even do to console the two girls. Their hearts twisting at the painful thoughts of hurting the two people that had come very dear to them.  With a snap of their fingers, they were back in the studio.
“Come on, lets get some sleep. You got a big day tomorrow.” Smiling softly down at the girl, both agreed that the sleep could possibly help ease their emotions. Grabbing the bag, [y/n] followed her up the stairs, bidding each other a good night as they each went into their respected rooms.
“Jules.. if you ever need comfort tonight, door will be unlocked.” Her cousin told her, as the curly haired girl quietly thanked her. Shutting the doors behind them, [y/n] placed her bag by the bed, falling back against it, lost in her thoughts. She shouldn’t be selfish, she shouldn’t have gotten attached to Luke. She shouldn’t have let herself fall for a ghost. Letting out a sigh, she stayed quiet, hearing Flynn and Julie talking in the room over. Smiling softly at their friendship, she missed the friendship she had with Callie. Deciding to get some air, she grabbed her keys, telling the two girls she’d be back later, before making her way downstairs and out the door. Slamming the jeep door shut, she turned the jeep on and before backing out, not noticing the peeking heads from inside the studio watch her leave.
“She’s gonna be fine you guys, she has her own method of madness of coping.” Julie reassured, coming into the studio, and seeing their defeated forms, especially Luke’s.
“She seemed really upset thought, Jules.” Julie shook her head, letting out a sigh.
“Look, boys. She’s going through an emotional roller coaster. She’s figuring out her feelings for Luke, dealing with stress with this whole ordeal, and she’s a mess with missing her best friend who passed away and is apparently under Caleb’s control.” She tried explaining to the boys, to hopefully help them see just how much pressure was on her cousin.
“Why hasn’t she said anything to us about it?” Alex frowned, the other two silently agreeing, although they all knew the reason.
“Because it’d be pointless with you boys crossing over tomorrow. That, and she’s always been secretive with her life that past few years. She doesn’t know how to really open up to people.” She explained some more, before hearing the jeep pull back in. Luke poofed out suddenly, leaving the other three confused.
“Let’s hope he doesn’t make things worse.”
[y/n] rose a brow when she heard a poof, and Luke sitting in the passenger seat. Nothing was said between the two as she turned the jeep off, leaving the keys in as she gathered everything else up.
“If you’re here to talk about feelings and things, I suck at it, so you won’t get far.” Was all she said, before he reached over and grabbed her hand, intertwining their fingers and giving it a squeeze.
“I’m not good with my feelings or opening up either..” letting out a sigh, he looked over at her, a little hesitant with the next part, “We heard you girls talking about us leaving.. if we had the choice, we wouldn’t. We love it here, we can play music, we make people happy.” Excitement was in his voice, as [y/n] smiled softly, knowing he was speaking the truth. “An, I have you here. You’ve made it even better, when we you popped in those few weeks ago, changing everyones lives around.” They talked for a while more, just holding hands and squeezing them. Talking about everything and anything they could, just to help ease the distraction of tomorrows events.
“Your mother would be so proud of you, Jules. You look gorgeous.” Both, Flynn and [y/n] told her, smiling so proudly at the girl. Watching her finish up the makeup as they snacked on the complementary food. [y/n] not paying attention as they started to talk about the boys and tonight. Only snapping out of it when she heard Julie run out, Flynn trying to catch up with her but never catching up.
“She’ll be fine, probably her nerves.” Flynn waved her hand, but [y/n] knew it was more of than that. She didn’t say anything as they walked to the side of the stage. The girls taken back after a few when she stormed back in, her mothers favorite flower in her hand, saying it was a sign. [y/n] smiled brightly, knowing that was exactly what Jules needed as she went on stage. Everyone was watching as she started to play and sing. The little gnawing feeling going away when they saw Alex pop in, followed by Reggie. Confused glances went around the small group when Luke started glitching in, before finally showing himself. Luke sent a small wink [y/n]’s way, causing the girl to chuckle  and blush softly as, Flynn and herself danced along with everyone else.

Shirogane no Oka, Kuro no Tsuki - Volume Two
Welcome to Hakkei Palace where living ghosts roam the empty corridors and nothing is as it seems. The envoy of Gods, the creature of mercy - kirin - has returned to reclaim his place at the side of the New King. But is his lie good enough to make the court look the other way as the search for the rightful monarch continues? At last, the time has come for the kirin to face the person responsible for his injuries. As Taiki and Kouryou are being escorted through the empty corridors and make it above the clouds, they discover that many parts of the palace destroyed by meishoku were never rebuilt and left to rot. What's even more strange is the state of many servants who seem soulless marionettes with no will of their own, their escort being one of them. As they are nearing their destination, suddenly the outraged Chouun shows up with his entourage and tries to stop them from going any further, but as it was ordered by the lord himself the minister can't really do much about, so in the end all of them head over to the Throne Room. After they enter the empty hall and courtiers take their seats, the tense silence falls and Taiki just stands before the dais and looks up trying to see through the lowered jewel blind that are obscuring the view of the throne. Finally Asen speaks up, asking Taiki why did he even come back in the first place. Kirin spins the story about having felt the aura of the king and recognizing it as Asen's, but the man himself remains clearly unconvinced and agitated Chouun demands better explanation. Then eerily calm Taiki goes on how he couldn't and still can’t come to terms with it, as he has no say in who the Heaven chooses as the next ruler. He also calls Asen a traitor and a murderer right in front of everyone. To that Asen just laughs coldly, sarcastically commenting kirin's honesty. But Taiki doesn't stops there elaborating on how he was at first scared of Gyousou, but then understanding the meaning of that fear and how it corresponds to the hate he feels for Asen. Taiki's performance is so convincing that even Kouryou starts to have some serious doubts. It also seems to make sense for most of the ministers but is still not enough as far as Chouun is concerned. But then as he starts to demand more evidence the most unexpected person makes their entrance. Here comes Rousan, who Risai thought to be imprisoned or dead. And to Taiki and Kouryou's shock the woman herself seems well enough and completely unbothered by all of the recent happenings. Turns out, she was the one who disobeyed Chouun orders and told Asen about Taiki's return. What is even more disturbing is the fact that Asen clearly trusts her and listens to her, as the assembled discuss the possibility of the unsual precedence - appointment of the new king while the former one is still alive as indicated by the still living hakuchi). She's also the one to suggest what might be the simplest way to check if the kirin really speaks the truth - wound Taiki. Because if Asen really is the new king, then there is no way that Taiki's beasts will attack him. And while others loudly protest this idea, Asen comes down the dais and without hesitation draws his sword on kirin. He asks if he's really the new King. As Taiki responds with 'unfortunately, yes' Asen proceeds to attack Taiki by slashing his arm. Everyone's shocked and surprised but completely calm Asen just accepts Taiki's return and orders someone to take care of him. Then as if nothing happened he sheaths his blade and withdraws with no concern for his Saiho's wellbeing. Kouryou rushes toward his injured liege who has slumped to the floor and is clearly hurting. When Taiki is being taken care of by the surgeon Kouryou is wondering how long this whole farce can really continue. Asen might have officially reinstated Taiki to his former position and may even want to celebrate his ascension (as some of the other usurpers had done before him) but there is no way that he'll get the Tentei's blessing. And what then? But as he looks at the Taiki's pale and exhausted face, Kouryou can't make himself to question his master's plan right one. As surgeon leaves, Royal Physician, Bun'en, barges in and promptly falls to his knees in front of kirin and is close to tears when Taiki recognizes him and his assistants. They exchange greetings and talk for some time, but Taiki is soon made to rest because of his wounds. As he recuperates, Kouryou and Bun'en discuss the bizarre state of palace affairs. The Court is in impasse as notoriously absent and surrounded by strangely unemotional retainers Asen doesn't do much in terms of politics and is usually holed up in his quarters that are off-limit for almost anyone and with no way to reach him the ministers can't make any important decisions. The truth is that most of them don't even try in fear of displeasing Asen and consequently losing their rank or getting even more severe punishment. Bun'en also suspects that one responsible for servants' strange condition may be Rousan as she clearly has shady tricks up her sleeve.
*** In Bun Province Risai and her companions prepare to investigate Mt. Kan'you and decide that the most easiest way not to stand out to much and be relatively safe from local rebels is to disguise as pilgrims who are often seen in this area. Having made it to the city of Sokou they are taken captive by the bandits while trying to save one of the real pilgrim from being robbed. The band's leader, Kyuusan, is very interested in their suspicious moves as they were seen wandering in the area. The man is smart and quickly deduces who his guests may be after their local guide, Kenchuu, comes to their aid and tries to explain the situation. They get into an argument about the actions of the rebels and in the end Risai concedes that they may have some good reasons for doing what they do. Since it's hard not to see things from Kyuusan's point of view, especially after hearing the story of his life and of the things that happened during the uprising that subsequently led to Gyousou's disappearance. Kyuusan's family became vagrants when he was only thirteen and not only the one of his younger sisters but also his mother were of weak constitution, the life was hard and most money went to medicines. Then suddenly he lost two of his family members, almost one after another - his sister became ill while taking care of mother and other sibling and died shortly after that, whereas his father lost his life in mine accident. Thus the boy was left to care for his remaining family and at sixteen was taken in by local rebels who were and still are in control of the extractive business. Kyuusan quickly rose through the ranks and at twenty already had high position and no longer after that he started running his own group, still connected to the main one but sufficiently independent. As the new ruler came to power rebels became worried about their current position as it seemed that Gyousou would not look the other way as they went on with their business. Thus tried to think about the way to make their actions less illegal. But then one of the groups came down from the mountains and took control of one of the cities making even more enemies along the way. Especially among the locals. The army was mobilized and took care of the problem but then another city was attacked and the situation continued to the point where the King himself decided to come forth when the city of Tetsui became endangered. Not so long before that old acquaintance of Kyuusan asked him a favor to run people off Mt. Kan'you. Kyuusan thought it strange and already suspected that that some up the ladder was behind the whole uprising but couldn’t refuse. And as Gyousou's definitely gone missing in the neighboring area Risai hopes to find some traces. After talking things through Kyuusan offers his help and takes them to Mt. Kan'you where they meet the man name Chuukatsu with whom they try to come up with the most probable scenarios. One of them being refugees illegally excavating in the shut down mine, finding and taking care of the wounded Gyousou, as it is pretty unlikely that heavily wounded man could have made it out of the mine on his own. Or if he did, someone must have found him. Unfortunately as they walk through the dark corridors into the depths of Mt. Kan'you they find nothing and go back to Rin'u empty-handed. And as they leave, the first snow starts to fall. The winter has come to Bun Province. *** Meanwhile in the capital city of Kouki Taiki is frustrated at his inability to proceed with his plans to aid his struggling subjects. As the governor of the Zui Province he's supposed to have certain privileges, but as his deputy, Shison, and Chouun seem do everything to interfere his every initiative and ignore his requests (like having one-on-one meeting with both Rousan and Ganchou or getting any information about imprisoned and probably tortuted Seirai, who was accused of stealing from the royal treasury), he remains powerless. At the same time the ministers have their own set of problems, main of them being Asen's unwillingness to claim his title or make any particular decision in regard to politics. Thus they have no choice but to consult with Taiki. Right on cue comes the new revelation from the Heaven. One which makes Chouun finally respond to Taiki's summons. Gods decided to appoint the new King but before they give him the power the current one has to abdicate to make the position open for Asen. Kirins can be wayward creatures to be sure and their loyalty lies solely with their people, but both Chouun and Kouryou are slightly unnerved by Taiki's cold and apparently dismissive attitude toward his liege's inevitable fate. It makes chousai wonder if Taiki can even be called a proper kirin as he in no way resembles his meek and agreeable predecessor. Rousan and Chouun go over every instance when change of the monarch can occur- from King straying from the Way resulting in kirin being stricken with illness, through regicide, to abdication. And seem to come to the conclusion that it must be completely voluntary. Which may pose some problems as Gyousou was forcibly ousted from power. And even if Asen never intended to kill him in the first place, he's also unlikely to share any information about Gyousou's current whereabouts. An information he certainly possesses. Thus a stalemate continues… Asen's idleness doesn't escape the notice of his faithful retainers, be it his direct subordinate such as Hinken and Kisen or ordinary guard like freshly minted Boushuku or much more experienced Gogetsu. All are as happy, as they are confused and worried. At the same time Taiki's newly appointed aid in the person of Keitou - one of Asen's subjects - tries to do everything in his power to help young governor make things work. Even as Taiki and Kouryou remain openly hostile and reluctant towards him, which doesn't surprise him but at the same time he genuinely wants to do something for his country. He sets out to search for the right candidates for Saiho's protection detail and at first goes to his old friend, Yuushou who also comments on Asen's current doings and how it was rivalry with Gyousou that kept him going and after the latter's defeat their lord just burned out and lost his motivation to go on. *** Back in Rin'u Risai and her companions search for any kind of new lead and seem to get in the form of new testimony from people who saw the group of vagrants transport a suspicious looking cart not longer after the uprising. As it may have something to do with the rumors about the refugees finding impossibly big gemstone back in the day the group heard from Chuukatsu they decide to investigate it. At first they don't seem to find anything useful but the residents of Ginsen behave very suspiciously and no longer after Risai and others leave they are attacked by unknown assailants, but those seem to be so obviously untrained and desperate that Risai decides to let it go for now. Later they reach the ruins of the village they passed by earlier that day and surprisingly find them already occupied by one of the local traders and his companions. As they prepare for the night Risai notices the unusual behavior of trader's guard and as she confront the man, he turns out to be the one of General Gashin's retainers, Seishi, whom Risai once met during the journey to Mt. Hou all those years ago. The trader found injured Seishi and sheltered him for all this time and now has no problem with letting him and his apprentice Yotaku, assist Risai and co. with their search. He also explains that indeed there were refugees transporting precious gemstones but were attacked on their way and slaughtered and that the all that is left of the village that took advantage of the situation are the ruins they are currently staying in. So, once again the group goes back to Rin'u empty-handed and once again they go to investigate possible place were refugees could have stayed in the past. This time Chuukatsu is their guide as they research long abandoned neighborhood of Mt. Kan'you only to find another ruins and remains of the people who desperately tried to survive and didn't make it. *** Somewhere in Bun Province the boy was orphaned once again, as the master he was taking care of has just passed away. The boy is grieving but at the same time blames the man for breaking the promise he made those six years ago. For the two of them were supposed to take the throne back from the monster residing in the capital city of Kouki. They were supposed to go together and all is lost because the master is no longer among the living… *** The winter has finally come to the capital of Tai. Strange apathy seemed to have descended upon the residents of Saiho's isolated mansion and Kouryou doesn't know if it has something to do with the weather or is it Asen's doing. He's also worried because lately kirin's gaze suspiciously often seems to wander in the direction of Asen's quarters. What’s clear is the fact that him and the others desperately need some rest. Fed up with his current situation Taiki decides to make his position clear and summons Shison just to dismiss him from his position as deputy and give it to Keitou instead, who's extremely honored and doubles his efforts to help Taiki. Also after speaking to her liege Yari agrees to be appointed as Taiki's another personal guard, which Kouryou thinks is a good thing because as kind of mercenary the girl doesn't owe allegiance to any of the corrupted ministers. And finally prompted by Taiki's words Chouun decides to publicly announce that kirin has returned bringing the news of Heavens giving their blessing to Asen. *** The hunt for missing gemstones and refugees continues as Risai gets the information about the suspicious activities taking place in one of the stores affiliated with one of the biggest and the most renowned gemstone businesses belonging to Fu family whose many shops can be found anywhere in the kingdom with home base in Hakurou, the capital city of Bun Province. Desperate for any information the group goes on journey only to find out that indeed the head of the family, matron name Houyou, has some shady dealings of her own, but it most likely involves illegal production of weapons and has nothing to do with the missing king… Just as Risai and others go back to Rin'u they are visited by the trader who saved Seishi. The man remembered that one of the more remote villages, Rouan, whose residents were lucky enough to escape the country-wide purge of Gyousou's allies, always issued for more medicines than they apparently needed and lately asked for the delivery of weapon. Hoping that maybe just maybe finally they're getting closer to finding some answers Risai and co. impatiently awaits for trader and Seishi's return. A few days later they are visited by disturbed and agitated Kiitsu who tells them about Asen's apparent ascension. Shocked and surprised Risai and Kyoshi go to the nearby Sekirin shrine whose residents always seem to have proven information, while Houto goes to check in with his trader friends. Unfortunately as they make their inquiries someone overhears them and people starts asking questions much to the priests annoyance. After the moment the chaos is temporarily contained and the priest reluctantly confirms that the rumor seems to be true. At the same time Seishi brings back a devastating news. As it turns out the residents of Rouan were indeed harboring a noble fugitive. Man whose wounds were so grave that is was impossible to survive if he wasn't the sage. Man who never revealed his real name in fear of involving the innocent. Man with white hair and crimson eyes. Man who died at the end of the fall… Confused and even more shocked Risai is confronted with Kiitsu's obvious belief that maybe Taiki purposely left them behind as they might not be able to accept the painful truth. Utterly devastated former General calculates the dates and comes to the conclusion that maybe Kiitsu is right. And then starts to wonder and despair. About Gyousou's supposed death and Taiki's lack of faith in her and consequent 'betrayal'… After calming down and thinking things through Risai decides to visit the Rouan village and ask about the dead noble. There after hearing everything from village leader, the group goes to see the grave for themselves. There they meet the boy, Kaisei, who took care of his dying master. He tells them that he suspects that what eventually killed him were the rumors about people searching for someone. Those people being Risai's group, of course. And that the villagers afraid of the government retribution, poisoned the man in secret, to get rid of any damning evidence. With this he leaves in hurry and Risai and her companions are left to wonder, what if. And now, that the all hope seems lost, they face impossible dilemma - if the news about Asen turns out to be the truth, will they be able to accept the fact that traitor and murderer is the rightful King? And that it means that the country desperately needs him and there's no way anyone would forgive them for even trying to kill him? And what about Taiki himself? Deep down inside Risai desperately wants to believe that her King is still alive… BACK
