Is there anything better than a free standing pit area entry to Coldplay concert for being a Global Citizen volunteer? Nope!
Such nostalgia with Fix You and The Scientist as I reminisce on the last time I caught them live in Kobe, back in 2008.
Thank you for growing up and growing old with me, you've certainly seen me through a few heartbreaks.

Hi! For Euphoria at GCF just now—the background vocal track in the last chorus of —Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Is that Jimin??
Lol, @bunny342 with all the excitement in getting to see and hear him performing live, I told myself to listen in and totally forgot.
And after it ended, well we were literally showered with content.
So, got your ask and went to listen.
I also went to listen to JK's Euphoria live performances from way back in 2019, you know, when we said we heard JM in the background vocals.
Also, interestingly enough, the background vocals at that point do not sound the same as in his GMA performance. They are kind of muted in that performance.
And my verdict, my friends, is that it sounds to me like JM.
The way JK takes out the earpiece before the yeah yeah.
Yes, you'd say he wanted to listen to the fans. But...
Now.
As I don't trust my own opinion alone on this, I turned to others for use of their ears as help.
And guess what?
Both @dgtn and @unlyshedstar who I want to thank for their help on this, believe this is JM's voice as well.
@unlyshedstar also listened to the studio release of the song and to other live performances of it. Not to mention she also noticed how in the performances it's supposedly JM, JK tends to take out his earpiece before that part, while in the others he doesn't.
So there you have it.
This is clearly a scientifically proven (not really) conclusion.
It's JM background vocals we heard in JK's performance of Euphoria at GCF (how appropriate too).

The mass shooting and fire at the Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow on March 22 was the deadliest terrorist attack Russia has seen since the 2004 Beslan school siege. The gunmen’s actions claimed at least 137 lives and injured 180 others. The four suspects currently in custody are citizens of Tajikistan. But Russian authorities are doing their best to connect the attack to Ukraine. Sources in Western intelligence, meanwhile, say it was the work of the Islamic State-Khorasan, a branch of the Islamic State also known as ISIS-K. Experts note that ISIS-K has declared Russia among its main enemies (along with the U.S. and China). Meduza breaks down what you need to know about ISIS-K and why the group has Russia in its sights.
What is ISIS-K?
ISIS-K, or the Islamic State-Khorasan, is a branch of the Islamic State that operates primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Formally, the organization governs an ISIS province (wilayah, in Arabic) and reports to the ISIS caliph. Currently, this position is held by Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, whose four predecessors were killed in U.S. operations.
According to ISIS ideology, its caliphate, or state, aims to span the entire globe. The organization has divided the world into provinces, some of which are headed by local Islamist movements that operated before ISIS came into existence (for instance, ones connected to Al-Qaeda). In fact, ISIS itself emerged when the Al-Qaeda branch in Iraq severed ties with the global Al-Qaeda leadership.
Similarly, the Afghan-Pakistani branch of the Islamic State, ISIS-K, emerged in 2015 as a local movement. Initially, the group was composed of several thousand opponents of Afghanistan’s pro-American government, mostly Pashtuns, who were disillusioned with the Taliban. ISIS-K immediately started engaging in armed conflicts with the U.S. army, the Afghan government, and, even more brutally, with the Taliban.
The Taliban’s ideology fundamentally differs from that of ISIS. The Taliban aim to establish a national Islamic State in Afghanistan, while ISIS supporters advocate for world domination and the defeat of all “infidels.” Islamic nationalism won out in Afghanistan (and neighboring Pakistan), and by 2018, the Taliban (with the unofficial help of U.S. air support) had virtually destroyed ISIS-K’s organized resistance in the eastern provinces. U.S. forces killed several of the group’s leaders and, according to experts, the organization’s numbers were severely depleted, going from several thousand to a few hundred people.
Sanaullah Ghafari, who took over ISIS-K’s leadership, shifted the group’s strategy from direct armed confrontations to increasingly ruthless acts of terrorism against the Taliban, religious minorities, and Americans. During the U.S. troop withdrawal from Kabul in August 2021, he allegedly orchestrated a suicide bombing at the airport gate through which refugees fleeing Taliban rule were trying to enter. The attack killed 182 people, including 13 U.S. servicemen.
ISIS-K later expanded its list of enemies to include Russia, among others. On September 5, 2022, an explosion near the Russian embassy in Kabul killed five people, including two embassy staff. ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the attack. In January 2024, more than 90 people were killed in twin explosions in Kerman in Iran. U.S. intelligence confirmed ISIS-K orchestrated the attacks. However, Taliban agents allegedly killed Ghafari in 2023, and it’s unclear who’s currently at the helm of ISIS-K. That said, judging by the Iran attacks, its strategy remains unchanged.
Why Russia?
Radical Islamists have long accused Russia of being a state that “oppresses Muslims” both at home and abroad. ISIS propaganda regularly mentions Russia’s past military campaigns in Afghanistan and Chechnya, and Moscow’s intervention in support of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria put an even bigger target on its back.
ISIS-K leadership has seen the initial success of ISIS leadership, which capitalized politically on the global struggle against “infidel empires” such as the United States, China, Iran, and Russia. Prioritizing “external operations” could yield far greater political and financial benefits (in the form of donations) than working with local resources.
There are also deeper reasons for the particular hostility towards Russia. In recent years, ISIS-K has been trying to expand the movement’s ethnic base — both in Afghanistan and beyond. In the northern regions of Afghanistan, where many ethnic Uzbeks and Tajiks live, its numbers are growing. ISIS-K regularly threatens Central Asian authorities, calling them “puppets of the Russian empire.” In this sense, the struggle against Russia is a fight for resources: primarily for radically minded supporters in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and neighboring countries.
Was ISIS-K behind the attack?
There’s still no publicly available indisputable evidence that ISIS-K organized the attack. However, ISIS has claimed responsibility, and sources told CNN that the U.S. is in possession of intelligence confirming these claims. The New York Times also reported that Washington considers ISIS-K to be behind the attack.
Ruslan Suleymanov, a Middle East expert, expressed skepticism to Meduza about whether ISIS-K currently possesses the necessary resources to organize such a large-scale terrorist attack on the outskirts of Moscow. However, the attack doesn’t appear to have been “high-tech” in nature: the perpetrators clearly had problems with their escape plan, as well as with weapons. (In a video from the attack, sparks are seen flying from the barrel of one of the machine guns, which could indicate that either the ammunition or the weapons themselves were in poor condition.)
Suleymanov said it’s also difficult to confirm whether messages on ISIS Telegram channels are authentic as the group’s accounts are regularly blocked, forcing it to create new ones. The posts about the Moscow attack come from ISIS-linked Amaq News Agency, not from ISIS-K directly. In one picture, the four alleged “participants in the operation” are shown with blurred faces against the backdrop of the Islamic State flag. Amaq later released a first-person body-cam video that clearly shows the attack on Crocus City Hall, corroborating the Islamic State’s involvement.

Star, I also had a small panic attack with your ask about pit tickets cause I’m notorious for missing tour announcements 🥲
I feel like you’ve been to so many concerts, I’d love to know all the kpop ones you’ve attended 🥹
I still haven’t seen SKZ 🫠 my only three kpop concerts were BTS on the Wings Tour in 2017, then SNSD on their 10th anniversary fanmeeting ALSO in 2017 in Seoul and I was 19, a broke college student and my mom went OFF on me about spending so much money on concerts when I didn’t have a proper job 🙃 it was a whole thing so I controlled myself and only recently began attending concerts again, and my first “kpop” concert was Yoongi on the Agust D Tour 🩷
Also what concerts do you wanna go to? I love talking about concerts sorry. My dream concert was SNSD since I was 12 so that’s why I had my last moment as a dumb teenager and basically went broke to see them. Right now I NEED to see SKZ live or I will die, I’ll also try getting tickets for the IU concert this summer since I put it off cause I was scared SKZ was gonna announce something 🥲
Anyway I hope we all get to see the boys live 🩷 manifesting tickets for us all
~🌷~
ME…. Every time I see anyone talk about skz announcement my heart falls out of my CHEST thinking I missed a tour announcement 🥲 DON’T WORRY GUYS I will spam the fuck out of this account when they announce it !!
I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU WENT TO THE WINGS TOUR I AM SOOO JEALOUSSS 💔 I haven’t been to too many kpop concerts, but definitely enough to know how they work and plan better for them and stuff! The ones I’ve been to are:
• BTS permission to dance in LA D1
• BTS permission to dance in Vegas D2
• Ateez Break the Wall tour in Oakland
• Stray Kids Maniac encore in LA
• Yoongi D-Day tour in Oakland
• 3racha at Global Citizen Fest in NYC
I also had Blackpink tickets but I sold them in hopes that Shinee would do a world tour when Hard was released (spoiler: they did not🥲) and I almost saw Twice but I ended up forfeiting bc a work thing came up 😭 Concerts I WANT to see live are:
• SHINEE. My number one. I will die if I don’t see them. Any member from SHINee solo concert too!
• EXO
• Nmixx !! Their recent album omggg zero skips
• Itzy
• TXT
• Twice
• Blackpink
And any group I’ve already seen, as many times as I can! I tried for Coachella tickets this year but unfortunately it was too soon to work with my schedule so I’m hoping Ateez do a world tour at some point. I’m planning on going to 3 cities for the next skz tour and my sister and I are going to possibly fly to another country for a SHINee concert because I will simply pass away if I don’t see them at least once.
MANIFESTING YOU GET SKZ TICKETS WHEN THEY’RE ANNOUNCED ANDDDD IU TICKETS 🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️ WE GOT THIS !!! 🫶💓

Trapped In a Box Tour (1992) Tragic Kingdom World Tour (1997) Return Of Saturn Tour (2000) Rock Steady Tour (2002) Blink-182 / No Doubt Summer Tour 2004  16 shows in June Summer Tour 2009  Start date May 2, 2009 End date August 12, 2009 No. of shows 57 in North America
Seven Night Stand (2012) 7 shows Nov-Dec
2008–2013: First reunion and comeback tour
As of February 26, 2013, the band officially confirmed through their website that they had indeed begun working on new music as well as plans for an upcoming tour
2013–2015: Second hiatus and disbandment
In October 2013, Tom Dumont revealed via Twitter that the band was once again on hiatus, but hinted that they would regroup in 2014. No Doubt did reform for sporadic live performances during 2014 and 2015, among others at Global Citizen Earth Day Concert, Rock In Rio USA, Riot Fest, and KAABOO in Del Mar, California, but did not announce a headline tour or release any new music
2022–present: Second reunion
In an interview with WSJ Magazine in December 2022, when asked about a reunion, Stefani said "What are the odds of anything? I was just on The Drew Barrymore Show. She was one of my favorite celebrities when I was a little girl, and now I was just on the show with her. Anything can happen. We haven't really talked about doing anything, but it feels like everyone is, right? All the '90s people — Blink-182 did an eight-month tour that sold out in like five minutes."However, when Nic Harcourt interviewed Adrian Young for AKG's Stories Behind The Sessions (published in May 2023) and asked him if the world would see any more No Doubt music, Young replied: "I don't think so. I think [Push And Shove] will remain our last album. And unfortunately, I don't see us touring anymore either. I could be wrong, you never know, things could change. I would love to have that feeling again, connect with the fans, and it's quite a shame we're not playing live.
On January 16, 2024, the band teased a reunion show. Later that same day, it was announced that No Doubt would be performing at Coachella in April 2024.

I don’t know if you allow this type of kinda anti-propaganda but I wanted to share in regard to one of your current polls.
Lauryn Hill IS really beautiful and an amazing musical artist, and that is why my school asked her (and payed her) to speak at our graduation. When she finally got onto the stage, a lot of us were really excited. When she got to the mic, she told us that she didn’t want to speak to this many white people.
I understand that she might have felt uncomfortable, but we live in southwestern CT. Non of us said or did anything, and the wide majority of us were excited to see her, and she didn’t want to see us.
I saw her in concert at Global Citizens Festival and she was great, but I doubt what’s behind that flawless beauty after that interaction.
Sorry, seeing the poll reminded me of this. If this is against protocol, please ignore it!
Anti-propaganda is certainly allowed! and this is very interesting.

Hi!! I’m so sorry I’ve been away for a while I’ve been dealing with a lot of stuff and have been super exhausted from work and other things…I feel like this time of year is so stressful haha. Autumn is my favorite season but lately I’m really missing summer. anyways, I missed you! I wanted to share that I went to Global Citizen Festival to see 3racha and Jungkook, I was so proud (esp of 3racha for coming even after the other members were in a minor car accident) and that they were SO good and worth waiting in the cold and rain for 😭 We were in the citi premium vip section but weren’t really as close as we should’ve been bc people camped out (which they weren’t even allowed to do?) and started lining up early asf to get to the front so my pictures and videos aren’t great but oh well…I feel lucky to have been there at all! Jungkook and 3racha looked immaculate as usual, I always forget how much better they look in person. Hyunjin is my bias but I have to say 3racha really bias wrecked me that day esp Changbin 😮‍💨 And JK’s undercut?? I was dying
How have you been?? I hope you’ve been taking care of yourself! 🫶🏻
-🕊️

Equitable Growth: Paving the Way for Inclusive Prosperity
In a world where economic growth often seems synonymous with inequality, the concept of inclusive prosperity emerges as a beacon of hope. It embodies the idea that economic development should not only focus on increasing GDP but also on ensuring that the benefits are shared equitably among all segments of society. Achieving inclusive prosperity requires navigating a complex landscape of policies, practices, and mindsets. Let's delve into the pathways that can lead us toward this transformative goal.
Understanding Inclusive Prosperity:
At its core, inclusive prosperity encapsulates the notion that economic growth should uplift everyone, regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or geographical location. It recognizes that prosperity is not merely about material wealth but also encompasses access to opportunities, essential services, and a dignified standard of living for all individuals.
Fostering Equitable Growth:
One of the primary pathways to inclusive prosperity involves fostering equitable growth. This means implementing policies and initiatives that ensure marginalized groups have equal access to education, healthcare, financial services, and employment opportunities. By investing in human capital and reducing barriers to entry, societies can unlock the full potential of all their citizens, driving sustainable economic development.
Promoting Social Inclusion:
Social inclusion is another crucial aspect of achieving inclusive prosperity. It involves creating environments where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to participate fully in economic and social life. This requires addressing systemic discrimination, promoting diversity and inclusion in workplaces and communities, and amplifying the voices of marginalized groups in decision-making processes.
Building Resilient Communities:
Inclusive prosperity also entails building resilient communities that can withstand economic shocks and disruptions. This requires investing in infrastructure, healthcare systems, and social safety nets that provide a buffer against crises. Additionally, empowering local economies and fostering entrepreneurship can help diversify sources of income and reduce dependence on volatile global markets.
Harnessing Technology for Good:
Technology has the potential to be a powerful force for inclusive prosperity, but only if it is harnessed responsibly and equitably. By bridging the digital divide and ensuring that everyone has access to information and communication technologies, societies can empower individuals to participate in the digital economy and access essential services. Moreover, embracing innovation in areas such as renewable energy, agriculture, and healthcare can create new opportunities for inclusive growth.
Promoting Sustainable Development:
Sustainable development is intrinsically linked to inclusive prosperity. By adopting environmentally friendly practices and investing in renewable energy, conservation, and climate resilience, societies can ensure that future generations inherit a planet that can sustain their well-being. Moreover, promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns can help reduce inequality and preserve natural resources for the benefit of all.
Inclusive prosperity is not merely a lofty ideal but a pragmatic imperative for sustainable development. By embracing policies and practices that prioritize equity, social inclusion, resilience, and sustainability, societies can navigate the pathways toward a more prosperous and equitable future for all. It requires concerted effort, collaboration, and a commitment to leaving no one behind. As we chart this course, let us remember that true prosperity is not measured by wealth alone but by the well-being and dignity of every individual.

Bigger and bigger container ships (Washington Post) Big ships can cause big problems. In 2021, the huge container ship Ever Given twisted sideways in the Suez Canal, blocking a crucial trade passage between Europe and Asia for almost a week. The trade traversing the canal was worth up to $10 billion daily. This week, a different heavy cargo ship struck a support column for the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, prompting the 1.6-mile-long bridge to come crashing down into the water almost immediately. The collapse of the bridge Tuesday morning has disrupted trade from the Port of Baltimore, which handled $81 billion of foreign cargo in 2023. Rebuilding the bridge could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. These two events, which took place almost exactly three years apart, occurred 5,000 miles from one another and in considerably different circumstances. But both involved enormous ships of the kind that have become the backbone of modern global trade. The Ever Given is what is known as an ultra-large ship, almost more than 1,300 feet long, with a gross tonnage of 220,000. The Dali ship, while still enormous, is a smaller ship with a length of around 980 feet and a gross tonnage of less than 100,000. In many ways, the giant container ship may be a symbol of our age. The Dali may have been sailing into an American port, but the ship was constructed by the Korean firm Hyundai, operated by a crew of Indian nationals, owned by a Singaporean firm and carrying containers on behalf of a Danish shipping giant that were en route to Sri Lanka.
Haiti: US guns pour into Port-au-Prince, fuelling surge in violence (BBC) armed gangs continue to run amok in Haiti’s capital, and they control over 80% of the country’s capital city. How exactly did we get here, with organized crime overpowering the country’s military? According to a U.N. report released in January, those gangs were able to build up capabilities by smuggling drugs and increasingly more powerful firearms into Haiti through the country’s porous borders. The report says that “most weapons are sourced in the U.S. and make their way to gang members and private residents through intermediaries, often through public and private ports and porous checkpoints.” The report noted that half a million legal and illegal weapons were present in Haiti in 2020.
Racial tensions cost Germany Inc. skilled foreign labour (Reuters) Manager Joerg Engelmann says he has pulled out all the stops to attract skilled foreign workers to his chemical engineering company in Chemnitz, east Germany. But once they arrived, the racial slurs and exclusion they experienced in the town have driven some of them away. His firm is one of five German medium-sized companies that told Reuters their foreign staff recently moved on or switched locations due to xenophobia, even as Europe’s biggest economy suffers a shortage of skilled labour. Many large companies in Germany and the Netherlands have expressed concern about the difficulty of hiring due to anti-immigrant sentiment. Some employers go a step further, saying they are actually losing staff because of it.
As death toll in Moscow attack rises to 143, migrants face fury and raids (Washington Post) Russian authorities on Wednesday raised the official death toll to 143 in the terrorist attack on a Moscow concert venue, and Baza, a Telegram channel close to Russian law enforcement, reported that as many as 95 people are missing and not included on the lists of dead or wounded. Russian security forces have arrested four men, all citizens of Tajikistan, and accused them of carrying out the assault. The men appeared in a Moscow court Sunday and showed signs of being badly beaten. Videos circulating widely on Russian social media showed evidence of torture, including one whose ear was partly cut off. In the wake of Friday’s assault, there has been a surge in raids on dormitories and workplaces where Central Asian migrants live and work, as well as heightened checks on migrant workers. Russia is home to millions of Central Asian immigrants and migrant workers who commonly face discrimination, which is certain to intensify after the arrests in the Crocus City Hall rampage.
Putin says Russia will not attack NATO, but F-16s will be shot down in Ukraine (Reuters) Russia has no designs on any NATO country and will not attack Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic but if the West supplies F-16 fighters to Ukraine then they will be shot down by Russian forces, President Vladimir Putin said late on Wednesday. Speaking to Russian air force pilots, Putin said the U.S.-led military alliance had expanded eastwards towards Russia since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union but that Moscow had no plans to attack a NATO state. “We have no aggressive intentions towards these states,” Putin said. “The idea that we will attack some other country—Poland, the Baltic States, and the Czechs are also being scared—is complete nonsense. It’s just drivel.” Asked about F-16 fighters which the West has promised to send to Ukraine, Putin said such aircraft would not change the situation in Ukraine. “And we will destroy the aircraft just as we destroy today tanks, armoured vehicles and other equipment, including multiple rocket launchers. If they will be used from airfields in third countries, they become for us legitimate targets, wherever they might be located,” Putin said.
Serbia eyes the “right time” for a new war with Kosovo (Die Welt) Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić cooperates closely with Russia, including on security and arms issues. Now he is threatening to invade Kosovo, which Serbia does not recognize as an independent country. If Donald Trump were to win, and NATO to weaken, Vucic may be ready to move, writes Carolina Drüten in German daily Die Welt. “We will wait for the right time and seize our opportunity...” That was the ominous warning last weekend of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić as the longstanding Balkan conflict continues to heat up. It’s worth noting that Vučić had already spoken admiringly in December of the current and previous presidents of Azerbaijan, who had waited a total of 27 years for the “right time” and geopolitical circumstances to recapture Nagorno-Karabakh. A new Balkan war is not imminent, but the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo has been coming to a head for months. It is about Kosovo’s status as an independent nation, which Serbia does not recognize. The EU and the U.S. have been trying to find a solution for years, but the situation is deadlocked.
Myanmar’s military makes its annual parade of strength despite unprecedented battlefield losses (AP) The head of Myanmar’s ruling military council marked Armed Forces Day on Wednesday with a speech claiming that the nation’s youth were being tricked into supporting the resistance against army rule, and that ethnic armed groups allied with the resistance engage in drug trafficking, natural resources smuggling and illegal gambling. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing spoke in the capital, Naypyitaw, where thousands of military personnel paraded in an annual show of strength, even as the army has suffered a series of unprecedented battlefield defeats that have tarnished their once invincible reputation. Over the past five months, Min Aung Hlaing’s army has been routed in northern Shan state, is conceding swathes of territory in Rakhine state in the west and is under growing attack in other regions.
Japan nappy maker shifts from babies to adults (BBC) A Japanese nappy maker has announced that it will stop producing diapers for babies in the country and, instead, focus on the market for adults. Oji Holdings is the latest firm to make such a shift in a rapidly ageing Japan, where birth rates are at a record low. Sales of adult nappies outpaced those for infants in the country for more than a decade. The number of babies born in Japan in 2023—758,631—was down by 5.1% from the previous year. It was also the lowest number of births on record in Japan since the 19th Century. In the 1970s, that figure stood at more than two million.
Doctors visiting a Gaza hospital are stunned by the war’s toll on Palestinian children (AP) An international team of doctors visiting a hospital in central Gaza was prepared for the worst. But the gruesome impact Israel’s war against Hamas is having on Palestinian children still left them stunned. One toddler died from a brain injury caused by an Israeli strike that fractured his skull. His cousin, an infant, is still fighting for her life with part of her face blown off by the same strike. An unrelated 10-year-old boy screamed out in pain for his parents, not knowing that they were killed in the strike. Beside him was his sister, but he didn’t recognize her because burns covered almost her entire body. These gut-wrenching casualties were described to The Associated Press by Tanya Haj-Hassan, a pediatric intensive-care doctor from Jordan, following a 10-hour overnight shift at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the town of Deir al-Balah.
Israel Deploys Expansive Facial Recognition Program in Gaza (NYT) Within minutes of walking through an Israeli military checkpoint along Gaza’s central highway on Nov. 19, the Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha was asked to step out of the crowd. He put down his 3-year-old son, whom he was carrying, and sat in front of a military jeep. Half an hour later, Mr. Abu Toha heard his name called. Then he was blindfolded and led away for interrogation. It turned out Mr. Abu Toha had walked into the range of cameras embedded with facial recognition technology, according to three Israeli intelligence officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity. After his face was scanned and he was identified, an artificial intelligence program found that the poet was on an Israeli list of wanted persons, they said. Mr. Abu Toha is one of hundreds of Palestinians who have been picked out by a previously undisclosed Israeli facial recognition program that was started in Gaza late last year. The expansive and experimental effort is being used to conduct mass surveillance there, collecting and cataloging the faces of Palestinians without their knowledge or consent, according to Israeli intelligence officers, military officials and soldiers.
Jordan’s government struggles to contain unrest as Gaza protests grow (Washington Post) Hundreds of protesters gathered in the Jordanian capital Tuesday for a third straight night to call for an end to Israel’s war in Gaza, clashing with baton-carrying riot police before tear gas rained down on them. On Wednesday night, demonstrators were back on the streets. “Open the borders,” they chanted. Though there have been regular protests in Amman, Jordan, throughout the nearly six-month war, the government has largely managed to contain the situation by aligning itself with public sentiment—harshly criticizing Israel’s conduct of the war and championing the Palestinian cause. But the scenes this week appeared more spontaneous, the crowds larger and the anger more raw, sending shock waves through the country’s powerful security establishment. Jordan is home to more than 2 million Palestinian refugees, most of whom have Jordanian citizenship. Analysts estimate half of the population is of Palestinian descent. For many here, geographically and emotionally, the war in Gaza feels very close.
Security in Congo’s east is deteriorating, UN says (AP) Security in Congo’s mineral-rich east has deteriorated since recent elections, with a rebel group allegedly linked to neighboring Rwanda making “significant advances and expanding its territory,” the U.N. special envoy for the conflict-wracked African nation said Wednesday. Bintou Keita told the U.N. Security Council this has created “an even more disastrous humanitarian situation, with internal displacement reaching unparalleled numbers.” Last month, the United States told Rwanda and Congo that they “must walk back from the brink of war,” the sharpest warning yet of a looming conflict.
