I say now is the time I start updating my tumblr gallery again... I've been slacking...

More TYK design studies! Here, specifically, an evolution of Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing throughout their lives, to see what stages they got through to reach who they are during book canon.

I headcanon ZZS as this little smug genius and tried to keep this unimpressed, self-satisfied smirk throughout, with I hope a noticeable shift for the last two.

5 y.o., still living at the Zhou estate, with his family. He's a bit of a weak child (pulled from ZZS saying he didn't have nearly as good a constitution as ZCL does), but quite smart, already with a knack for spying on people.

10 y.o. has joined Siji manor, proud and smug and feeling superior for having been chosen by QHZ and being hella good at what he does.

15 y.o. is now freshly appointed sect leader, and I think it's going well enough, that he's quite feeling himself there.

20 y.o., has now been working for HLY for a bit more than a year, roughly.

25 y.o., right after the ending of Qi Ye, right after the war, right after he pretty much got his very personal bad ending. I feel like he's quite numb, can only survive through floating above everything and just focus on work and some distracting, meaningless things.

29 y.o., TYK canon after unmasking.

With WKX I wanted to represent, without being too on the nose, the progressive loss of humanity.

5 y.o., still living with his Jianghu heroes parents. Quite a happy and playful child, more interested in having fun than studying. Probably a natural at many things, however, such as learning his father's sword techniques (unlike the arts of healing lessons that he probably didn't pay much attention to)

10 y.o., has been in the valley for a few months already, surviving.

18 y.o., is a servant for whom is currently the Ghost Valley Master.

21 y.o., is now the GVM himself, has successfully lead a coup against his own master and then won what was basically a battle royale for the throne.

26 y.o., is now a seasoned GVM, has been in this position for much longer than average, is working on his plan.

30 y.o., TYK canon.

For reasons, it's quite important to me to have this overview and to consider in detail each of their progression since I think it participates heavily into how I understand them as people. The followings were already posted in my previous post with all the design, but since it's thematically coherent I will add the families and some details about them:

The Wen family, especially the parents, were Jianghu heroes in the best wuxia tradition. Wen Ruyu had to look a like Wen Kexing, and Gu Miaomiao be this pure, strong, energetic heroïne. As mentioned above, I like child WKX to be a very fun and energetic child himself-- he likes the colours his mother wears, likes to run around and look at beautiful things. I found that the two buns were a cute addition to his design. He's about 3 y.o. on this illustration. The Zhou family is meant to look plain and normal, as ZZS himself-- little parenthesis: although I do like to draw ZZS as handsome, I think he isn't much more than that; I think that it's fine to consider that he looks rather plain, especially next to people like WKX or, obviously, JBY or YBY. Since ZZS seems to have a fascination with heroes in the book, I like to imagine that he was naturally the least heroic of the brotherhood; both his brother and sister being a better match than himself (although ultimately they are all fairly normal people). I liked to have his mom be the originator of his height (I think he should totally be the tallest of the brotherhood, btw).

shl women thought of the day: do you ever think about how much pressure gu miaomiao was under? her husband temporarily unable to get out of bed, her son young enough to not understand why they’re hiding but old enough to get into trouble and also old enough to be TRAUMATIZED, she’s trying to take care of them both and also keep them safe while she’s ALSO been kicked out of her home, purely for the crime of helping her friend and sect sister, for her husband’s kindness to rong xuan (did gmm resent rong xuan for this.), and she’s STILL on top of everything enough to sniff out what zhao jing tries to pull on them AND come up with a solution to make him back off (either she came up with it on the fly, in which case she’s fucking brilliant, OR she already had this planned out as a contingency plan, in which case she’s differently brilliant)

idk there’s two parts here: one, gmm is absolutely incredible and i don’t think it’s clear just how good she is. two, did she have any moments to herself in that last period of her life?

Modern AU (which I still hate), where Wen Kexing was lost in the foster care system after his parents’ deaths. (They left behind a lot of money, and Kexing’s disappearance was mostly a comedy of errors, with the family lawyers just hours late each time. Like everyone knows Kexing is alive and heir to a fortune, therefore he can’t be declared dead and the next in line (Zhao Jing, Gu Miaomiao’s second cousin, or something) to inherit can’t get their hands on the money, but good luck finding him.)

Then when he finally makes it out of the system at eighteen (with the eight-year-old A-Xiang hanging onto him like a limpet), he fucking goes to war against the system, and becomes an activist/politician.

The actual story starts with an election coming up, and Kexing meets the recently resigned former security consultant of Helian Yi, Zhou Zishu.

Zhou Zishu, of course, had his privileged upbringing, but it all went down in literal flames. He’d graduated high school early, and was already in college when it happened, but he still ended up with student loans for his last two years of college. In exchange for his cousin Helian Yi to take care of them (the loans, and Jiuxiao), Zishu pledged his undying loyalty, or what have you. Never mind going to the official army, Helian Yi had him trained by the best (assassins/spies/retired soldiers, etc. Beiyuan was one of them). When he’s ready, Zishu started spying on Helian Yi’s political opponents, and managing smear campaigns. The last nail that broke the camel’s back for Zishu, was when he had to set up Jiuxiao as having been raped by some politician’s daughter (princess Jing’an). He resigned after Jiuxiao screamed at him to never contact him again, moved and changed his phone number. Given that Zishu hasn’t been feeling well lately either, it just made sense to quit, find out if he’s having stress ulcers or dying of cancer (as coughing up blood could mean either) and try to make up with his brother.

Or not make up, if the small but inoperable tumor in his lungs has anything to say about it. Zishu walked out of the hospital after that diagnosis. He could have asked for treatment, but it would be a half-life for the next however many years (and however expensive), or he could walk away, live his next few years trying to be comfortable and leave Jiuxiao enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

This is the Zhou Zishu who meets the young upstart, Wen Kexing, intent on throwing the status quo into chaos.

20. What if/Alternate Timelime

I mean, growing up in Siji is the obvious answer here, but there's a special place in my heart for HealerValley!WKX.

I think his parents still have to die to instigate the revenge plot - or well, at least his dad, we can keep Gu Miaomiao because I love her.

I would be super interested in seeing how a WKX who grew up in the human world would approach the big sects. I'm thinking full Philanthropist Wen vibes, but with less forced "I am now exaggerating what I believe regular people act like". He can be smooth and flattering and make himself likeable to any group of people, and I think he might just decide to cozy up to the Five Lakes Alliance and destroy them from the inside.

That is, until he travels to the Mirror Lake sect for the first part of his plan, and runs into a man in disguise...

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? i think either See The Day, because it still gives me so many FEELINGS and i feel like i did all those feelings justice and am just so satisfied every time i reread it, or Sex Pest, which i believe is the best piece of smut i've published.

Here it is! My personal designs of the (mostly) full TYK cast! What I mainly learned from this: TYK has a lot more characters than expected, haha.

My idea was mainly to get a clearer image, for myself, of all the people appearing or being mentioned in the book (and btw, a big chunk of the characters above died before the story even started and don't even get a line, but, you know...). One of my guidelines was, everyone has to look interesting, has to look like the main character of their own story. TYK is pretty much a story about side characters... so if noone is a main character, everyone is, no? (...does that even work? lol) Some of these designs were inspired by SHL, because it being the first one I saw, it of course left an impression in my mind. The rest is essentially taken from the few descriptions we get in the book, and my own imagination (plus some help from pinterest for the clothing). Rong Changqing is 100% inspired from @tbgkaru-woh depiction of him.

One noteworthy thing: the giant dog is too big. I thought it was supposed to be the size of a big horse, but it's actually the size of a pony... woops. Now, additionally:

The protags families! Wen Ruyu and Gu Miaomiao had to look heroic because that's pretty much what their characters are about. The traditional Wuxia story heroes that marked the legend. Conversely, the Zhou family has to be as plain and normal as possible, haha. ZZS says, in QY, that he's often called "Zhou San" (=Zhou three), which means he's the third child in his family. Since I like the idea of him being the youngest, I only gave him an older brother (who will inherit the position of head of the family and thus justify ZZS being able to leave for a shady remote sect) and an older sister. And as another bonus:

Hehehe. So these are... let's say, the men in ZZS' life, before WKX.

- Jiuxiao, of course, because I'm convinced ZZS had feelings for him

- Huang Xu, an OC developed with Bichen (son of a HLZ supporter, whose family ZZS infiltrated for a while --as Su Yan-- to try and sway them towards HLY's cause ((Su Yan's "Yan" is the same "Yan" as in Zhen Yan, just as a little nod to SHL))) - Zhu Ai, a magistrate OC, developed with Moose and Bichen, who's deeply infatuated with ZZS --only knowing him as that one guy who handles imperial guard watch tours and trains guards--

-and one guard I just like to imagine having a crush on him too. I started working on some guy from WKX's childhood too, but I feel like WKX's past is such a huge can of worms, I'll save all of that for later, haha.
