Michael A. Muller — Mirror Music (Deutsche Grammophon)
Tumblr media
youtube
Ten independent artists — largely from the improvised, jazz-adjacent ambient side of things — venture into Michael A. Muller’s glowing, swirling soundscapes, each finding and bringing different textures there. Muller, a founder of the Texas minimalist music collective Balmorhea, sticks to long-toned, keyboard-based instruments: a Mellotron, an Oberheim Two-Voice Synthesizer and a Rhodes organ, creating luminous auras of tone. His collaborators play a variety of instruments — guitar, percussion, voice and cello — populating these edgeless, serene sonic spaces with melody and rhythm.
Muller himself plays the guitar, and he seems to have a particular affinity for its devotees. Bay Area finger-picker Danny Paul Grody scatters sparkly chords and meditative runs across synthesizer washes that surge and swell and ebb. Without the guitar, these tones might be too unreal, too grand, too beautiful to catch, but with these slow-blooming, organic figures, the music makes sense on a human scale. Chuck Johnson is a different case. His silvery sustained pedal steel music contains its own uncanny valleys, and so he slides like a ghost between shimmering, vibrating curtains, carving aching arcs of longing into a chilled, cerebral landscape. Douglas McCombs, of Tortoise, Brokeback and Black Duck, picks a clean, reverberating, almost surf-toned melody across an oscillating, shifting, reverential backdrop; he cuts right through it, emphatic and sure.
Women artists make a mark, though mostly with their voices. Vestals float eerie, altered sighs and caresses over the clear tones of Rhodes, a piercing descant one of this disc’s most gorgeous sounds. The Polish composer and pianist Hania Rani also sings, in a whisper amid shivering ambiences, in a way that reminds me a little of Mia Doi Todd. But Clarice Jensen, who sometimes plays with Balmorhea, brings her instrument along, threading rich throbs of cello through a landscape of widely spaced piano chords.
In the mirror game, budding actors stand face to face, copying each other’s expressions and gestures in real time, in a sort of synchronized dance. Here, the interaction is more oblique, with each artist staring into a foggy reflection and finding some element of themselves there. The music that arises is hardly synchronized, but the players find a way to react and build on what the other is doing. Oh, and it’s lovely. That’s important, too.

Hey,
I wanted to ask what you think of hate against ahad,
I know ahad is privileged and for him it was easy as compared to other actors but we shouldn't forget that he gave us iconic characters in the form of Asfi and Amaan.
Even vishal Malhotra of Dkd is close to my heart.
I think that he has it's own individuality and he is better without sajal.
I think sahad was a curse to Ahad's capability and his co-stars,
Mawra, maya, alizey, kubra and hania suffered a lot.
Now I feel that ahad can focus on his individuality and my heart breaks for mawra.
I feel that ahad should have supported her.
Sajal accused mawra on national television of blocking her, then she posted U x M story after a gap of time by tagging mawra official account.
Because of sajal statement, mawra was terribly bullied,
Ahad also had issues with Mawra.
Why was Sajal jealous of every co-star of ahad
And
Why ahad could never defend his co-stars,
Ahad is a nice guy but with mawra his behaviour was rude.
Even though I feel soft for ahad,
But I can't deny that both sajal and ahad are toxic individuals.
???????
why am I getting this ask in the first place I don't know?? i am confused..are you an Ahad fan or not a fan? itne mixed signals mil rahe hain.
I know ahad is privileged and for him it was easy as compared to other actors but we shouldn't forget that he gave us iconic characters in the form of Asfi and Amaan.
I'll be responding to this directly. have you considered that it was his privilege that have him "give us" these "iconic" characters in the first place? Farhat Ishtiaq dramas are more guaranteed to be a mainstream success. the fact that Ahad got to play lead in TWO back to back FI dramas screams privilege not any struggle or talent. so pls..usspe yeh underdog story thopne ki toh koshish hi na karen.
and what's this attitude of Sahad being something Ahad was forced into instead of being a ploy that he very actively participated in and encouraged??? Sahad fandom was HUGE and it DID have both Ahad and Sajal's personal contribution to it. Sajal and Ahad BOTH profited tremendously from their Sahad love team. the fandom was so enamored by the power couple nature of their favs that it felt like it was their right to bulldoze over any person who dared to come "in between" them. i won't call either Sajal or Ahad toxic but yeah I will ALWAYS call their fandom toxic because I have first hand experience of the shit they pulled. any action that either Sajal or Ahad did wouldn't have any consequence if they didn't have an army of devoted fans who was ready to inflate their behavior and make it more toxic than it was.
but now since the fantasy of them being true love personified has broken..ab suddenly fandom ko yaad araha hai ke oh Mawra toh actually achi hai...and oh Maya ke saath kab kaam karega Ahad they make such a nice pair.
LMAO. gimme a break. tab toh these women were called "jealous" by this fandom collectively but now the fandom has broken into solo Ahad and solo Sajal fans instead of being a collective SaHad fandom toh sab apne paap dhone mein lage hain. but I ain't ever forgetting them. at their cores these fans will always remain the shit stirring deranged bunch of people who always only displayed their worst behavior when they were having the best of times and any u-turns now are being taken purely out of majboori than any purity of the heart.

A REVIEW: A Monster Calls at The Oast Theatre
Tumblr media
Before you read this review, I have one simple request; if you have yet to book tickets for A Monster Calls, open a new tab, grab some tickets (at the time of writing there are still seats left) and then come back to this review. Trust me. You need to see this production. You can thank me later.
So, that’s probably going to give you a sense of where this review is going to go…
Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing Ian Tucker-Bell’s latest foray at The Oast Theatre on its opening night. As a piece, I was only vaguely familiar with the plot of A Monster Calls. The novel by Patrick Ness found its way onto my Goodreads reading list a few years ago and I’ve never gotten around to reading it. In the same vein neither had I seen the film adaptation starring Liam Neeson. So last night I was sitting in the second row with nothing but the programme’s synopsis and a few quotes I’d seen on social media to prepare me for what was in store.
To summarise the erstwhile plot, 13-year-old Conor O’Malley is living with his mother who is suffering in the very late stages of cancer. As the cancer progresses and weakens his mother, a yew tree in his garden comes to life at 12:07 every night. He will tell three stories and Conor will give him a fourth, a tale that tells his darkest secret, and in exchange, the yew tree will offer healing…
And that’s as far as I’m going with the plot. If you want to find out more… go see it!
Physical theatre has become something of a signature for Ian’s productions, but A Monster Calls is the most I’ve seen it utilised. The cast are on stage for the majority of the show in a variety of functions; playing Conor’s school bullies, his family, and branches of the yew tree itself. The choreography is unbelievably detailed and is highly effective in immersing the audience in Conor’s world. A production with such physicality requires strong actors, and I applaud Greg Shea, Robert Grist, Faye Bedding, Seb Juneman, Toni Pollard, Julie Atkinson and Nick Blessley for their ability to work as a collective while offering standout individual performances.
At the heart of this piece, is a family on the precipice of grief. Hania Simons delivers a subtle but heart-wrenching performance as Grandma. Her hardness for the duration of Act 1 makes her breakdown at the end of that act so affecting. Bizz Portlock gives a definitive turn as Mum. I’ve seen Bizz give many memorable performances but this one is up there with her very best. Her ability to show Mum’s deterioration while retaining a sense of optimism is a master class in acting. Mum’s talk with Conor in Act 2 was the first scene in which the tears started flowing in the audience.
The eponymous Monster was played with a fierce presence by Ben Dangerfield. Throughout the play, Ben gave us a Monster full of righteousness and something akin to rage. Much like with Grandma, this is a veneer designed to be broken and by the time we get to the play’s denouement, the Monster is soft and caring, delivered with heartbreaking tenderness by Ben.
But the stand-out performance has to be Kate Munson as Conor. What can I say? This has to be one of the best performances I’ve seen in amateur theatre. I’m struggling to find the words to summarise what I saw last night, but what I can say is that you believe. You believe she’s a 13-year-old boy, you believe Conor’s fear and you believe his pain. Taking aside the first-class production, you need to see A Monster Calls for this performance alone.
The whole piece is underpinned by an excellent lighting plot from Ian Crawford and sound design by Dave Mackin, both of which have just as much to do as the actors and I applaud the operators Joff and Bob Brown for keeping in time with the actors. The music by Neil Mackin and Ian Tucker-Bell set the tone for each scene and complemented the action perfectly. I did feel a few tracks cut out a bit too abruptly, which could easily be sorted with a short fade at the end, but this was nothing that took me out of the action.
The costumes by Beti Price and Sarah Jones helped with the character transitions and I particularly liked the Monster’s boots (I must get my hands on some)! The props seemed to appear as if by magic and it wasn’t until the end of the show I worked out how they were materialising, hats off to Sara Lacey and Philip Tucker-Bell for making this magic happen. Further applause must go to stage manager Martin Apps and Assistant Director Karen Dix for running such a well-oiled ship.
At curtain call, I was in floods of tears and on my feet in applause. As I said at the beginning, don’t waste your time reading this review… just go see it! If you miss this play, to quote it, “what would possibly be the purpose in that.”
Andy Sunnucks
A Monster Calls runs at The Oast Theatre from 25th February- 4th March. Tickets can be purchased from oasttheatre.com

track #2 on the upcoming album On Giacometti by Hania Rani (released on february 17)
Spring
can you see Spring (Clarity) even in the heart of Winter’s seed?
will you “conserve” the inner garden?
Hania Rani announces "On Giacometti" a tender meditation on the life and art of Alberto Giacometti and family.
"On Giacometti" is a collection of beautiful recordings inspired by the renowned artist and family and features some of Rani’s most profoundly delicate compositions to date. Invited by film director Susanna Fanzun, to score her forthcoming documentary on the legendary artist Alberto Giacometti, Hania Rani took herself to the Swiss mountains to compose in blissful isolation. As Rani explains eloquently below the compositions are based on improvised melodies, simple harmonies and structures and inspired by the silence of the mountains as Rani returns to her main instrument, the piano. The results are beguilingly reminiscent of her beloved debut album Esja, but with subtle extra layers of synthesiser, and on two tracks cello from friend and long-running collaborator Dobrawa Czocher.
the opening track on the 2019 album Esja recorded in Iceland

Note
Mischa was definitely seen as a cash cow. She was offered Yale or the show and took the show. She mentioned at the time one of her first purchases was buying her mom a car. In time her dad quit his job too. They bought a massive mansion with her money (that they would later lock her out of and keep her pets away from her when she sued her mom). This interview of young Mischa has always stood out to me because her mom is parading her and Hania as actors: YT - hJYoUk6nt6M
Wow, jesus. I always knew there was some drama but I didn't realize how reliant on her they became. That's so much pressure.
Mischa handled this interview so well for a 9 year old. In the beginning you can hear her British accent come through so cutely.

I receive a lot of solo piano submissions and have been collecting them into a single playlist for years. I hope it brings you some sort of peace in these hectic and chaotic times.

What Should You Do On A 2-day Trip To Crete?
2 days are not enough for a Crete holiday but they aren’t even less. Within two days, you can visit the most important locations of Crete and create beautiful memories. The only thing is you should plan out your schedule properly and not forget to rent a car in Crete. If you use other transportation modes, you will almost waste a day looking for them, meaning you will have only a day for a Crete vacation.
In this post, we will discuss places that you should visit on your 2-days trip to Crete.
Samaria Gorge
It’s an off-the-beaten-track sort of destination in Crete. People rarely visit here because they don’t know about the place. But, if you can find and visit it, it will be worth the effort.
Here, you will find rounded white and dark rocks, making the place great for hiking and nature trails. This beautiful gorge forms a part of the Samaria Gorge National Park. This location is considered one of the most picturesque areas in Crete.
Hania
Also known as Chania, Hania is the second-largest city in Crete. The city has beautiful Venetian Architecture. Here, the air is delicious and the sea breeze is salty. You will find mountains and shorelines sitting together.
Other than this, you will find lighthouses, old mountains and buildings, and relaxing beaches in Chania.
Elafonissi Beach
Crete is the largest island in Greece, which means there are many beautiful beaches here. But, the thing is you cannot visit them all in a 2-day trip. So, you should prefer Elafonissi Beach over other beaches.
Elafonissi beach is all about natural beauty where the sand is almost pink and the water is a beautiful greenish color. You will find plenty of Sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach and bars as well. You should rent a car in Crete to visit this place at least.
Palace of Knosos
If you love architecture and history, don’t forget to visit the Palace of Knosos. It is a part of ancient history. You will go back to the ancient period after visiting this place.
We recommend you visit the Palace of Knosos with a guide as there is a lot of history hidden in it. Today, part of the Palace is reconstructed but still, you will get a good idea of what it must have looked like in ancient times.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Just like beauty, the history of Crete is unique. If you are curious to know more about Crete, you should visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. In this museum, the long and intriguing history of Crete is beautifully preserved.
Here, you will find ancient artifacts belonging to various eras. The best thing about this museum is the Minoan collection. You will not find this in the whole country. We are sure you will love Cretan history after visiting this place.
With this schedule, you will cover a beach, beautiful architecture, history, and a beautiful city along with hiking. And not to forget, good pictures because all the places listed above are beautiful. A reminder for you, rent a car in Crete.
