December 12-24, 2022. AT LONG LAST I finished this painting!!!! This is an acrylic painting animated in photoshop! The bottom left is the uncompressed edit of my favorite still; to the right is the original unedited scan of my painting. Each character took like 3-5 hours to render in paint, and the animation took about six hours to do (this is the first time I've animated rain btw)

In March, before the release of 'Watching and Dreaming', I wrote this comment to a post on the topic "You found a genie and wished for 20 episodes in the third season of The Owl House instead of 3 episodes. How can this go horribly wrong?". Now I have found it. I corrected a couple of mistakes and gave a little explanation in parentheses
Everything seems great at first. Each of the episodes tells about how Hexsquad get to know Human Realm, get into some kind of trouble and escape with the help of magic. In addition, we are shown how Phillip adapts to the modern world and studies it, and builds new stuff. Maybe Phillip visits Gravity Falls and Los Angeles (Hometown of the heroines of the "Amphibia" series), as he finds information that something strange was happening there. And at some point we become aware that all this time Phillip was watching Hexsquad through the cameras
Perhaps sometimes, instead of Phillip, we are shown how Bosha and other students of Hexside live and deal with their problems. Kikimora is still among them.
The events of the episode "Thanks to Them" take place near the end of the season. When Hexsquad realize that they have a rebus showing where the Titan's blood is, Phillip finds out about it. He takes the Titan's blood, but Hexsquad notice him and start following him. They arrive at his base, which is located in another city. While Hexsquad are exploring the base and looking for Phillip, he uses Titan's blood to activate a portal through which dozens of robots get to the Boiling Isles. Hexsquad find a working portal and pass through it, hoping to have time to stop Belos. Next, we are shown how Phillip is sitting in a room with monitors that show all the places where Hexsquad were before, including a room with a portal. After Hexsquad have entered the portal, he smiles, picks up a bag, goes to the portal through different rooms, and activates a device that makes him invisible, after which he enters the portal.
The next few episodes are devoted to how Hexsquad study the changed Boiling Isles and come to Hexside, where they meet Bosha, other children and a disguised Kikimora. At the end of each episode, we are shown what Belos is doing. He has re-equipped his old hideout and now, through numerous robots, he is watching the entire island. Later it will be shown that the robots have reached other islands, what gives you the feeling that Phillip probably will personally explore these islands.
All the worst will be in the final episode. We will be shown how one of the robots arrived at the Archive House unnoticed and placed various books, game consoles and just toys in a prominent place. The Collector will find these things and together with King will begin to study them. Luz and her friends will use a teleportation glyph to get into the Titan's head, but robots are already waiting for them there. The robots will shoot sleeping darts and Hexsquad will fall asleep.
Luz will wake up chained to a chair, she will be in Phillip's hideout. Phillip will be sitting across from her, they will have a conversation. Luz will be scared, she will ask where her friends are, she will threaten Belos. Phillip will calmly begin to tell what he has been doing all this time, how he studied the modern Human Realm, invented new things, spied on the Hexsquad and came up with plans. We find out that game consoles and other things were delivered to The Collector so that he would have something to play with. Phillip will say that modern Human Realm is quite strange, but he is used to it and is going to clean it of all the filth.
He will turn on a live broadcast on the screens of what robots are doing now all over Demon Realm. Luz will be forced to watch as robots kill hundreds of witches. She will scream, she will cry, she will beg to stop it, and Phillip will smile. When the robots are done, Luz will be silent and cry quietly. Phillip will tell her that she doesn't have to worry, because he didn't touch the dolls - it's necessary for a Collector to play with something.
Luz will quietly ask where her friends are. Phillip will say that they are still alive. One of the screens will show a room in which all the surviving students of the Hexside, Hexsquad and Kikimora will lie. Phillip will show that with the help of some spell, artifact or technology, he can control people. And then he will show Luz a drawing in which students, Hexsquad, Luz herself and Kikimora will stand together and smile, but they will be gray as a stone. Phillip will say, "You remember petrification, right?" and Luz will shudder at the realization.
She would beg Phillip not to do it. Phillip will say that Luz doesn't have to worry, Hunter will stay alive, but he won't remember Luz, her friends, or the Boiling Isles (And he shows her the memory gun). And that now it's time for Luz to go to bed. Phillip gives Luz a sleeping pill and she falls asleep despite trying to stay conscious.
Phillip frees her and carries her in his arms to the same room that was shown on the screen. He puts it with the others, and then uses the item that he told Luz about. Witches and human get into poses, open their eyes, smile, and Phillip turns them into stone. After that, it is shown to us that Phillip did something to Odalia's mind so that she would start to really take care of The Collector and love him.
After that, we are shown how Camilla and Vee are sitting at home and talking, they are worried about the guys. They hear the front door open and run to it. Phillip is standing on the threshold. He shoots them with sleeping darts, they fall asleep, then get into poses and Phillip turns them into stone. Robots take the statues out of the house and load them into the car. In the next scene we see that Camilla and Vee are standing in the same place as the statues of Luz and the others.
Hunter wakes up in bed in a completely new place for him. Phillip is standing next to the bed and Hunter smiles when he sees him. Phillip says Hunter is a little injured, but he will be well soon, and in the meantime, the two of them can play some game. Hunter happily agrees.
The credits begin. At the end, it says "Thank for watching" in large letters. It looks like it's written in someone's blood
That would be absolutely devastating to watch! Watching Philip once more create and carry out his plans in such a calm and collected manner would be terrifying, and it would really amplify how scary of a character he is. I also like the idea that Philip would be going around to other places of weirdness and anomalous activity in order to further his research. I mean, imagine if he and Stanford met and got along. The man would be so distraught to find out the true purpose behind Philip’s visits. The idea of him using robots is interesting, and I like how it’s a callback to Amphibia. All in all, a very interesting AU idea!

Hi, hiiii. Sorry, I just saw on one of your posts something about Canon Luz meeting the Shadow Puppets versions and everyone being divided on what they think about Belos. What do you mean?
Tumblr media
I'm a little unclear on what part of this ask your question is referring to. If you mean the bit about canon Luz meeting the Shadow Puppets verse, that's just a weird little idea I sometimes think about while I'm going to sleep, I don't have much to say about it.
If you mean the part about the Boiling Isles, I'm going to direct you to this post by @the-enchanted-archivist to save a little room on this answer because that covers a big part of what I mean. The tl;dr being that a handful of rebels with no evidence should not have been, and in the Shadow Puppets AU, were not able to convince an entire population's worth of Belos Supporters that he was actually evil the whole time.
Shadow Puppets also takes it a few steps further
Belos in our AU did not turn a peaceful community against itself, there was racial tension between Witches, Demons and humans wherein powerless humans were the most vulnerable to abuse . He and Astrophel (the Collector) faked Belos being able to communicate with the Titan to preach the Unification of Witches and Demons against a made up enemy dubbed "Wild" Magic which started a real war.
They did not set out for Belos to become Emperor, he came into power after leading a successful rebellion against the previous ruler, one that the general public actually considered oppressive. His rebellion gained support because he made promises of inclusiveness that he later fulfilled. Not just the equality of Witches and Demons, but racial, sexuality and gender, which is why homophobia and racism don't exist in the modern Boiling Isles, all for the small price of sealing away all but one type of magic each. To the average citizen, Belos was a legitimate hero.
So, ultimately, to those same citizens, what happened on the DoU looked like a terrorist attack from a small group of Wild Witches who ruined their chance at paradise.
That much is enough to lead to some division among the people, but also in the Shadow Puppets AU, the Collector's power is the key to the Draining Spell, so the Hexsquad kidnap Astrophel and take him into the human realm with Belos on their heels. No one saw this happen, so it was largely assumed that their beloved Emperor was killed by the rebels and the empire falls into chaos and anarchy because no one can agree on what to do now that they've lost their Emperor and direct line to their god.
They only learn otherwise when Belos returns, fully consumed by his Wendigo curse and taking a more direct approach to destroying the Boiling Isles, which, without spoiling what actually happens during this arc; results in a big part of the population learning every detail of their former Emperor's life. And, like opinions on Belos here on tumblr, the truth is very divisive.
For some of them, the fact that he'd had this horrible curse since such a young age (15) and lived fighting it for so long, is enough for them to dismiss his attempt at killing them as the result of his curse and say that he would never have done such a thing if he hadn't finally lost his battle for his humanity. Citizens in this camp often bring up all the ways their society benefited from and advanced during his reign in discussions on whether or not he was actually evil.
Others look passed the curse to the other details of his life; being an orphan, nearly dying as a child, being a victim of CSA and grooming, abandonment, even his struggles in their world and the dark history of human abuse by Witches and Demons to see him in a sympathetic light. This group isn't as dismissive of his wrong doings as the ones that merely blame his curse, and not all of them agree completely on where they stand on him, but the general consensus is that what happened could have been prevented and the real tragedy is that no one knew so they couldn't help him
And of course, there's people for whom none of this matters, he lied to and manipulated them for years and they will never forget or forgive that.
Opinions on Belos, his curse and his humanity are still divided even in the Shadow Puppets version of the epilogue, people are still confuse and their society as a whole is still healing.
And just in anticipation of a follow up question; the average citizen is unaware of Astrophel, pretty much only the Hexsquad and a handful of others know about him and their opinions of him aren't as divisive. All of them agree that he was a traumatized child who didn't know any better, and Astrophel calls them out for forgiving him but not Philip despite him being just as responsible, if not more so, for everything since Philip could not have pulled any of it off without his encouragement and support.

August 03-19, 2022. At long last, Hexsquad Among Humans: Perils of a Realm Beyond the Boiling Isles has COVER ART! I had so much fun making this. Logo done in illustrator, the rest done in photoshop using a collage of photos on my phone, a hand-drawn pen and pencil base and a reference by @ohfuckohfucknoplease (I'll reblog the reference below). Outfits of the Hexsquad are actually outfits I own IRL believe it or not.
Edit 2: I DID AN ART SOME MORE

December 6, 2022. To all those on A03 who’ve waited patiently for chapter 4, I do apologize for the wait. It’s still in production, but while y’all waiting, have this and a preview of Hexsquad Among Humans: Perils of a Realm Beyond the Boiling Isles | Chapter 4: The Dinner:
“Luz showed me her ancient human archive of knowledge, the wiki! I memorized the passage on the creation of apple juice,” Gus bragged, as if it were the words of some ancient scroll he’d recited and not the encyclopedia that every once in a while was tweaked to say the moon was in fact made of cheese. Library databases were more reliable sources of information, but Luz could barely figure out how to navigate those and so she hadn’t introduced him to them yet. She’d promised herself she’d get around to showing him those when she was competent enough not to embarrass herself in front of him. That day never came, and so he was stuck with wikis that were only surface level.
“Yeaaah,” Vee scratched behind her head. “You always gotta double check what you get from there. Anyone can edit that to say whatever they want.”
“…oh.”
“If you want more reliable info, the local library’s a pretty good source.”
“You have those here?” Amity perked up, “That’s right… the human bookworms!” She turned to Luz. “Maybe sometime we can go see them, right?” Hearing her genuinely a little enthusiastic was so sweet. Titan, did Luz wish it was under any other circumstances than the ones they just came from that they ended up in the human realm. Maybe then they could’ve had that mundane slice-of-life date she promised and not have the destruction of the isles on their mind.
<i>Still, a trip to hit the books might be in order. </i>
History books and old spell books were likely the best place to search for leads on getting back to the isles. Even if the information was bound to be vastly inaccurate. All the sources Luz had ever had on magic before - whether from ancient myths, fantasy books, or online forums - had been wrong to a degree. Not even the databases were guaranteed to have reliable information. How could they when all humans had to go off of were leaks from another world and not firsthand experience? Then again, maybe humans <i>had</i> traveled there and back again but to different regions. <i>Or maybe even different titans.</i> It wasn’t impossible, as long as Titan blood leaked into the right puddles of water at the right location. Even then, narratives weren’t guaranteed to be accurate. Philip was - <i>once was</i> - living proof that humans tended to distort the truth of magic intentionally. Finding a way back was going to be like finding a needle in a mountain of unreliably documented haystacks.
“Luz?”
A gentle squeeze of her arm brought her back to reality. It occurred to her she hadn’t replied verbally or via text to her girlfriend’s suggestion. Without thinking she mumbled, “Uh, sure. Yeah.”
Amity frowned.

December 9, 2022.
HAH ENTHUSIASTS, CHAPTER 4 RELEASES SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2022!
That's right everybody! After a near five month hiatus, two hurricanes, and the completion of my Graphic Design major, the long-awaited fourth chapter is about to release! Get ready for 14,000 words of angst and intercultural shenanigans!
-
Summary: After an exhausting evening, the Hexsquad dines with the Nocedas. A riveting intercultural exchange ensues! Blending dishes and customs from the Boiling Isles and the human realm... what could possibly go wrong?

"But Trevor, I thought you said this chapter was 17,000 words?"
Technically, it is! However, the advice of my betas and those who've read my snippets compelled me to cut off the chapter for ease of legibility. The downside is that this was an unexpected cut and not my intention; the positive side to this is that means that Chapter 5 already has 3000+ words to it!
Thank you so so much to everyone who was so patient for this! Your continued support and clamor for this fan fiction is the reason I've had the motivation to continue! A special thanks to my betas @edenihira and @camomile-t for helping me perfect this fic, and special thanks to @novelist-becca for giving yet another look-over and helping me fix dialogue!!! This has truly been a labor of love and I could not be more grateful.
Also friendly reminder that if you do any fanart for this fic I WILL upload it into my fanfic! I see every piece you show me and it makes me!!! so soft!!! to see that people love my work this much.

The blinding light of the post-eclipse apocalypse had vanished. Gone were the isles, the Collector, Luz’s little brother, and the world she tried so desperately to save all in one instant. A dark and vacant wooden room glared back at her.
It wasn’t over. It couldn’t be over. Going back was the only option.
She opened the door. Closed it. Opened it again.
The same empty space laughed back in her face with its silence. She had no magic. No key, No door, No Phillip journal, Nothing.
She turned around. Three witches and a grimwalker, tired, bruised, and strewn upon the muddy grass, looked to her. What they were looking for, she didn’t know. For guidance, reassurance, a reaction, something. She could manage no words to say. Cold rain filled the space where a heartening speech or a plan of action should’ve been.
They lost.
She lost.
The emperor was defeated, the Day of Unity stopped, and somehow she was still here, thrown and sealed out of the only world she’d ever loved.

Also guys don't worry, I haven't forgotten about Hexsquad Among Humans. Here's a snippet from Chapter 4
"Don't you mean, ah,” Camila interrupted, now more than a little concerned. “apple <i>juice?</i>" Luz knew exactly where this was going. She remembered innocently asking that question. It was sweet, and a bit nostalgic watching someone else go through the same initial weirdness she did when she came to the Isles. In better circumstances, she would’ve loved to explain the whole thing to Mamá, and she wouldn’t have to clarify that her friends weren’t the bad crowd and weren’t into booze.
<b>It’s like apple cider,</b> Luz prepared her explanation. <b>There’s hard versions for adults and then there’s milder stuff for kids.</b> She got up from her seat (the act of which her jelly legs did not like) and handed her phone to her mom.
The tension eased out of her with a slight laugh, “Ohhh, so the blood thing is just a nickname for cider, then! My mistake.”
She was met with blank stares.
"... no?" Willow reciprocated the confusion. "Haven't had apple cider before. Or juice."
Her mom’s discomfort visibly returned.
“Who gets juice from <i>apples?</i>” Hunter muttered in the direction of the window, beyond which lay a world blanketed in cold rain, the likes of which was unfathomable to most witches. Then, he remembered where he was and froze, as if anticipating a blow from someone for asking the wrong question. Amity only glared at him a little.
“Humans do,” Gus answered. Not judgmentally; casually. “Apple juice is a fruit juice made by the maceration and pressing of an apple,” Luz could tell an infodump was nigh on the horizon. She sat back and listened. Anything to block out the tangled mess of thoughts in her head. Plus, his enthusiasm could be really contagious. Maybe it’d help dislodge her post-apocalypse funk. “The resulting expelled juice may be further treated by enzymatic and centrifugal clarification to remove the starch and pectin, which holds fine particulate in suspension, and then pasteurized for packaging in glass, metal, or aseptic processing system containers, or further treated by dehydration processes to a concentrate.” With each step he gestured with hands, growing more and more animated and regaining a little light in his eyes. Distantly, she wondered if he forgot he could make illusions to demonstrate the process or didn’t want to make them in order to appear more human and/or not freak out her mom. “Human apples come in so many varieties, too!”
She’d begun to zone out a little. Gus’s speech continued in the background of her awareness as she joined Hunter’s gaze staring out the window. Cold rain. She didn’t ever think she’d miss the hot sting of water pellets that felt like home. The cold rain of the human realm had never felt colder than when she was trudging through it just hours earlier.
“There are pink ladies, granny apples, paula reds, jonathans, ida reds–” “Eda?” Luz’s mouth moved before her mind fully registered. Gus’s smile dimmed. “Ida with an ‘i.’ Not…” he sighed. “Sorry.” He sat back down. “You guys probably didn’t need to know all that anyway.”

“And you know, how, exactly?” Hunter’s face was starting to go red from being held up for so long. Flapjack pecked at the hold. “These monsters are nothing but malevolent deceivers that live to usurp stable households and cause mayhem by killing witches when they suspect it least!”
Vee ducked behind Camilla, who looked completely aghast. “Where did YOU get that from?!” The basilisk shot back. “The emperor?!”
“I—”
“Wait…” Vee slithered back. “I know you. That annoying voice!” She gasped. “You’re the Golden Guard aren’t you?!”
“The what?!” Camilla swiveled to face her.

Does anyone know any actual moms or Dominicans who are into TOH?
I could use a little help in that regard for my fic Hexsquad Among Humans. If you're either a mom, parent, or a Dominican individual who's into TOH, I would love your input. I could use some cultural consultation and tips on how to write realistic older adults. Reply to this post or DM me!
