Regarding Dedan’s Claim about Spectres

He lied when he said only the Queen’s officers (I’m assuming only directly appointed officers?) were capable of fighting the specters. Zone 3′s Elsens could obliterate the specters (yes, they were sugar addicts but still!!!). I’m still wondering why this was but!!! Dedan is probably overly proud and doesn’t consider the capabilities of anyone around him. Also did you know Dedan translates to “low ground.” Which means! He did not have the high ground, inevitably leading to his defeat and damnation at the hands of the Batter.

Two movies with actual wlw content:

THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURES OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE (1995): Low-budget lesbian teen romcom, written and directed by Maria Maggenti, about the budding romance between 17-year-old baby butch Randy (Laurel Holloman, who later played Tina on THE L WORD), who works at a gas station and is in danger of not graduating high school, and a rich Black classmate named Evie (Nicole Ari Parker), who drives a $50,000 SUV and reads Walt Whitman. Cute and generally charming, though mostly at a sitcom level, it's most interesting when it contrasts the girls' home lives (Randy lives with her lesbian moms and aunt, while Evie lives with her affluent control freak single mother, played by Stephanie Berry). A somewhat disquieting element is teenage Randy's ongoing on-the-down-low affair with an older married woman (Maggie Moore), a situation that doesn't seem to trouble anyone other than the woman's boorish husband (John Elsen), and which the movie ultimately plays for laughs. CONTAINS LESBIANS? It's a lesbian movie, Bront. VERDICT: Pleasant, inconsequential.

JAGGED MIND (2023): Awkwardly titled, awkwardly realized lesbian thriller about a young Black artist named Billie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), on the rebound from an emotionally unavailable ex (Rosaline Elbay), who jumps impulsively into a new relationship with a white woman named Alex (Shannon Woodward) despite struggling with debilitating memory problems that result in frequent déjà vu and jarring flashbacks to arguments and even violent incidents that can't have actually happened. (Or can they? Etc.) The editing tricks used to illustrate Bilie's flashbacks are dramatically effective, but the eventual explanation of what's going on is not, involving too big a leap from what's already been established while leaving some important story threads (and character motivations) largely unexplained; the film ends up relying heavily on Richardson-Sellers' looks and charm to paper over an abundance of holes in the plot. Perhaps most interesting as a companion piece to the 2022 movie HEATWAVE, with Kat Graham, another recent thriller about a queer Black heroine falling, at her peril, for a mysterious white woman — an emerging sub-genre of gay cautionary tale? (Of the two, HEATWAVE is better, mostly because while it also falls short, its more modest ambitions keep it from bruising itself quite so badly in the fall.) CONTAINS LESBIANS? Almost exclusively! VERDICT: Good-looking, half-baked.

This was definitely interesting to write, as someone who is a big sucker for angst! And sorry about the "little" part, I kind of forgot about that ^^; Either way, I hope this is to your liking!

Batter with an Immortal Reader

Notes: impermanent Death

So high up, he fought amongst the clouds for the salvation of the corrupted, accompanied only by you. Making sure to keep everyone alive, you altered between ordering Omega to attack and heal. However it wasn’t until Alpha managed to blind Japhet that victory felt as though it was finally within reach.

Knowing this, Batter charged towards the millennial firebird, dealing another blow to his head. However, instead of faltering, he seemed to panic, giving in to the instinct of survival and lashing out. With the scream of a dying god, he sang his song, leading Batter into a dance of death near the edge of the building. As all balance was lost, his centre of mass gave way to a final flight.

Yet, somehow, in a flashing second he couldn’t quite comprehend, a hand pulled him up and a shadow leapt into the abyss in his stead. The light of the shining Add Ons faded, as did their forms, and Japhet collapsed in exhaustion. He had slain another royal guardian, but the deities hath taken a sacrifice themselves it seemed.

The Judge’s anguished wails didn’t reach him as he stormed down the library. Stumbling over nothing, his mind was occupied with only one thing. Even so, the Elsen he simply shoved aside as they merely spectated hell taking form. Having finally reached the outside, he hurriedly scanned the area, and then he found you. No matter how out of breath he may have been, he rushed towards you.

A red puddle crept around you, devouring all hope Batter had, only his denial aiding him in warding it off. This sight alone made him reconsider what he had done. He was the puppet, he was the one who should have died. He was replaceable, you were not. You were the messiah, you were the one to lead him and the world to paradise.

Dropping onto the ground, he dug his fingers into his wrist until his own claret escaped him. Harsh and heavy breathing kept him from letting the world know his anguish. Everything he had was torn from him in a twist of fate. If only he could show the world and the gods what they have done. Sacrifice. The word echoed in his mind as he kept his heart from breaking with all the lies he could think of.

You sacrificed yourself for him so the holy mission could be fulfilled. He couldn’t possibly let it be in vain. In the new and pure paradise, you were going to look down at him from the heavens above and smile. This was the Eden he was going to fight for.

A factory, Elsen and spectres, most of which he had encountered before. Burnts fighting and Zacharie helping him. Finding the remaining royal guardian. All this was practical.

And another pair of burnt Elsen in a room of their own hubris. Their ambrosia, sugar. Despite the fights being more difficult without the aid of his Add Ons, he made do with what he had.

“Batter? Hey! I’ve been looking for you! I’m so glad I found you again!” A voice so familiar and lovely called out to him. Was he really to give in to some form of hallucination of his one and only Player? Perhaps the mere presence of the sugar had gotten to him.

A hand on his shoulder. It was warm and inviting, into his line of sight came you.

This couldn’t have been reality. But even so, his own hand reached out to touch you, his thumb gently caressing you when he felt your corporeal form.

“Yeah, I know this is a surprise and all, but I-” You couldn’t even finish your sentence, your explanation, as Batter simply wrapped his arms around you and buried his face in your neck, as though callous fate was to take you from him again.

And once more, his breathing turned ragged, holding back the emotions he tried to ignore. “My Player… (Y/N), you’re alive. Have I been mistaken from the start and you had never been taken to kingdom come? Was this but a challenge?”

Gently, as to not break him any further, you put his face in your hands, stroking his cheeks with your thumbs and putting your forehead against his. “I’m here, I’m alive, I’m not going to leave you. I’m genuinely sorry I never told you this, but a curse has been placed upon me where it leaves me unable to die. Therefore, I can assure you, we can spend eternity together here.”

Once more, he fell onto his knees, looking up at you and never breaking eye contact. Truly, you were the saviour, the messiah. When you smiled at him as warmly as the sun, he could see the halo behind your ethereal being. While everything else was destined to wither and fade, you were eternal. The only eternity that mattered to him.

Fourth generation Harbinger of Health. The artificial Knight was one of his partners, Eddie. Supported Pestilence remotely when they were searching for him. Dealing with a lot of residue stress from the situation and currently trying to help the being formerly known as Pure Knight rehabilitate as well as supporting his family. Owns a hospital in his file. Considers other Meat-elementals to be kindred spirits. Has an add-on named Aceso.

Name: Dr. Florence “Nightingale” Health. Usually just called “Flo”, also affectionately called “Firebug”.

Identity: Nonbinary bisexual, he/they. Doesn’t really mind if you call him a guy or other masculine terms.

Harbinger Info: Meat-type, weak to Plastic. Possesses high agility and spirit, and immune to Paralysis. Uses competences in battle, the majority of which focus on regenerating health.

Aspect Ability: Universal Donor. Flo’s blood has a hyper-regenerative property that can be used to heal any affliction. This has the additional ability of making Flo nearly unable to die. As long as at least one cell of him remains, Flo can go from a state of near-death to normal in a matter of minutes. Flo dislikes using his blood on others, and reserves it for extreme emergencies. The only affliction that cannot be cured using Flo’s blood is the incurable disease Pestilence, his counterpart, is afflicted with.

Physical characteristics: Biologically an Elsen. Wears a labcoat bearing many burn marks and tears and a pair of tell-tale solid blue glasses. Has ash marks on his face and somewhat long, frizzy hair put up in a ponytail.

Neurotype: Autistic and ADHD. Some manner of PTSD and an extreme case of pyromania.

Possessions: Lighter (weapon/stim toy), scalpel (alternative weapon), mint-smelling vial, bottle of painkillers (other stim toy), wallet with pictures.

Hobbies: Attending patients, studying medicine, spending time with his loved ones.

Location: Zone 1, Flo’s file. Flo’s hospital.

Inspired by this post and this post my friend @consvlting​ just reblogged, I spent way too long trying to work out what books Irene has in her apartment. There are a lot of crammed shelves, but some of the books are just impossible to make out. From what I could see, she owns:

The Visual Arts: A History by Hugh Honour and John Fleming (first screencap, second shelf roughly in the middle): “Hailed as the most up-to-date and comprehensive survey published in a single volume, this new revised edition is an authoritative and enlightened account of the history of art. It presents art history as an essential part of the development of humankind, encompassing the arts of Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas-spanning from the primitive art of hunters 30,000 years ago to the most controversial art forms of today.”

Purposes of Art: An Introduction to the History and Appreciation of Art by Albert Edward Elsen (first screencap, second book from the far right): “This work delves into the visual arts such as painting, drawing and sculpting. In Purposes of Art the author has opted not to simplify the discussion in order to attract a larger audience. Rather, Elsen's work is intended for those with a keen interest in art history and who thus have a base of knowledge in the subject matter.”

Places of Delight: The Pastoral Landscape by Robert Cafritz, Lawrence Gowing and David Rosand (first screencap, third shelf, red book):  “Examines the history of pastoral landscape painting from the High Renaissance through the late nineteenth century.”

Picasso & Things: Still Lives of Picasso by Jean Sutherland Boggs et al. (first screencap, third shelf, blue book): “Published in conjunction with a traveling 1992 exhibition subtitled: ‘The Still Lifes of Picasso’. [This] catalogue cites 145 pieces.”

At Home with Books: How Booklovers Live with and Care for Their Libraries by Estelle Ellis (second screencap, second from the bottom in the pile of books behind her): “From an elegant, curved modern library with sunny picture windows to a bedroom library with dark wood paneling; from a simple apartment with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to the grand Rothschild library, At Home with Books shows how book lovers live with their books in every room of the house.”

Giuliano Bugialli's Foods of Italy by Giuliano Bugialli (second screencap, bottom of the pile of books behind her): “The cuisine of Italy, inspired by the beauty and elegance, the tastes and textures of the country itself, is one of that nation's richest cultural heritages. This book is a very personal celebration of the foods and traditions of this Italian culinary authority and award-winning author.”

So, what can these books tell us? I want to talk about this within the show’s canon, instead of in my AU’s where Irene is a real person. Every one of these books was chosen by Jamie to make a very clear and pointed impression on Sherlock (and anyone else who interacted with her as Irene.) She is cultured. She reads widely about art, artists, and art history. The books on art are all highly-regarded and authoritative works.

Obviously, more than any of the other books I could make out, Irene owns books on artists and art history, which makes sense, since she is a fine art restorer by trade. Sherlock would have spent time in this apartment and when they weren’t busy having sexual marathons he would have probably perused her shelves, and been impressed with how widely she read on her subject, just how passionate she was about her career. It was something they shared in common. Though I can’t make out the titles of the other books on the shelves, it’s clear from a couple of the spines that they are also books in art (the first book on the left on second shelf from the bottom in the first screencap, for example, clearly has paint splodges on it). It’s likely that, filling most of the very full shelves in Irene’s apartment, are books on art, art history, and artists.

Besides that, the other two books I could make out are also very telling. Irene Adler was nothing if not cultured. She’s not just an art lover, but obviously a bibliophile. Where there is not art on the walls, there are shelves crammed with books, and it makes absolutely sense that she owns a book about books.

Finally, the book on Italian food. To quote Sherlock, “[Irene] made her living restoring Renaissance paintings for art museums. She travelled extensively because of her work.” Of course she would own a book on Italian food. She might have been playing a role as Irene, but she was still Jamie Moriarty. She enjoys fine dining and fancy cuisine, she has a sophisticated palate, and of course she owns a book about Italian food.

Every book I could make out allowed the façade of Irene Adler to come into sharper focus. She is extremely well-read, she loves art, she loves books, she loves fine food. I don’t doubt that Jamie set up the apartment with books she really does own, but she definitely chose to display these books deliberately, all to give Sherlock the immediate impression of who she was, before they’d even really gotten to know each other.
