People in this fandom will really look at The Fool, Patience, Lacey, Carson, Sedric, Hest, Davvie, Lecter, Kennit, Ash/Spark, and yes, even Fitz himself, and still have the gall to call it queer bait.

These characters are explicitly queer, their actions impact the narrative, they are well written, and their identities are treated with respect. That is the best possible queer representation you could ask for in any story.

I've seen people on tumblr basing the likelihood of if they read this series on whether or not it's "actually gay" and I'm here to tell you that it is. There are queer characters. There are queer protagonists. And no matter what you see people in the fandom say, Robin Hobb wrote some amazing queer representation in a genre that rarely sees it at all.

EDIT: and I think it's pertinent to note that, no, characters who are questioning or struggling with their feelings about sexuality instead of knowing 100% does not make something queer bait or "less gay"

I know like, canonically, Abigail wasn't having the best time with Hannibal throughout season two BUT

idk I generally just think of her as at least happy in the moments they actually spend in each others company because the poor girl deserves some happiness in her life

but then I actually think about it and like,, that almost makes her fate in Mizumono worse? like the idea of her being able to accept a new father figure in her life, who for all intents and purposes is just the better version of who her actual father was in the first place, she's being taught how to cook and how to play the harpsichord and she can make him laugh with a single comment and she's happier than she ever had the chance to be in the past several years. she knows Hannibal’s plan, how he wants to bring Will to him on his own and then bring the three of them together into a family, and even if Will is a little strange and more than a little frightening she can feel herself imagining the day not so far in the future where the three of them can live peacefully in a house in Italy or France or even Japan, she can continue school and one day she starts calling Hannibal dad and Will something similar.

and then comes Mizumono, which shatters the image the moment there's blood dripping from between the bodies of Hannibal and Will. she dies in a kitchen by the hand of a man she thought of as her father.
