On This Day in History July 11, 1920: Legendary movie and theatre actor Yul Brynner (original name Yuliy Borisovich Bryner July 11, 1920 - October 10, 1985) in the city of Vladivostok which was part of the Far Eastern Republic, now Russia.

Brynner is best known for this role as the King Mongkut, the King of Siam in Rodgers and Hammerstein's the King and I. Brynner would win both the Tony and the Academy Award for the role on stage and screen respectively.

Brynner was also a mainstay of Westerns especially with the star studded cast of the Magnificent Seven, the vengeful gunslinger in Westworld, Pharaoh Rameses in the Ten Commandments. Brynner was also an accomplished photographer.

Not many actors past and present had the screen presence of Yul Brynner.

I do enjoy the TCL Chinese Hand And Foot Ceremonies. Previously, I’d covered Lily Tomlin ceremony with Jane Fonda. This occasion was to honor Director James Cameron and Producer Jon Landau for their years of great filmmaking and the sensational success of Avatar: The Way of Water which is hurtling quickly to the 2 billion dollar mark in box office receipts making one of the top grossing films of all time. I joined 20 or so other photographers to shot the event that Sigourney Weaver joined in honoring both men. The Chinese theatre had recently cleansed by the rain and we were enveloped in the shade of El Capitan and other building on the south side of Hollywood Boulevard for the hours plus king ceremony. The first time we shot the whole event in shade. Ellen K opened with a speech then the others followed. Everyone had an interesting story or two to tell about James or Jon as well as Titanic or Avatar. It offers an insiders view on how film come together sprinkled with personal insight and antidotal stories about their work as creatives. It’s always enjoyable and unforgettable. Here is a 1938 miniature of our church that is part of a mini Hollywood set owned by the @hollywood_heritage Museum. Currently, it is not available for public viewing, but @donnellywood56 Brian Donnelly recently got to see it and shared these great pictures from his viewing. . The model was built by a cabinet maker who kept his employees busy during downtimes in the 30's by photographing and making to-scale models of prominent Hollywood buildings. On This Day in History August 6, 1917: Rugged actor Robert Mitchum (August 6, 1917 - July 1, 1997) was born in Bridgeport, CT.

Mitchum was known for his hard nosed (Yakuza/The Big Sleep,) no nonsense (Winds of War/War and Remembrance) and menacing (Night of the Hunter/Cape Fear) characters.

Though he was nominated for only one Oscar in his career, Mitchum was a very underrated actor.

Brandon Johnston and Hollywood History

No, I don't think it's waste of time to research guys who worked as extras on The Righteous Gemstones. Especially when you come across someone whose instagram is full of beefcake photos:

Brandon Johnston (right) has 11 acting credits on the IMDB. Among other roles, Elf Photo Clerk (at Christmastime, one assumes), Valet, College Student 2, Audience Member, Golf Caddie Twin, and Genius Clone.

According to his resume, Brandon graduated from Northwestern University, and has had additional training in improv, singing, and acting, and voiceover artistry. He is also apparently an identical twin.

Other than acting, Brandon's primary interest is in Hollywood history. His Tiktok and Instagram videos tell the stories of many LGBTQ pioneers in the industry, such as Dorthy Arzner, William Haines, and James Whale. There's some general history, too.
