Over the Nexus Deck Profile: Horus the Black Flame Dragon
Tumblr media
LV, or Level, monsters are a late DM/early GX gimmick where weak monsters grow into stronger forms. Horus the Black Flame Dragon is one of the first groups of LV monsters released, and they are one of the best. As you can imagine, with them being FIRE Dragons with a cool Egyptian theme, they're easily my favorite LV monsters out there! The goal of the archetype is to destroy opposing monsters by battle, so that they can level up during the end phase. Horus LV6 is unaffected by spell cards, while Horus LV8 can outright negate spell card activations, like Dark Paladin without a cost. Incredible! Like several Dragon-based decks I've posted before, this deck plays a Dragunity engine, but not just for Synchro climbing; Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg is one of the most reliable means of searching Horus LV4, so we play it alongside the usual playset of Vajrayana. Because this deck is dependent on destroying monsters by battle, we're running Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind as means of weakening those monsters to be attacked, as well as providing access to the powerful Blackwing Armor Master. Like the Jurrac deck before, we're also playing three each of Book of Moon, Shrink, and Royal Decree, the last of which is especially powerful in this deck, because Horus LV8 negates spells while Decree negates traps. This unusual hybrid of a beatdown and stun deck is effective and fun to play! MONSTERS (16): Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind x1 Dragunity Dux x3 Dragunity Phalanx x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 x2 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 x1 Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon x3 SPELLS (21): Book of Moon x3 Dark Hole x1 Dragon Ravine x3 Future Fusion x1 Giant Trunade x1 Level Up! x3 Monster Reborn x1 Mystical Space Typhoon x2 Shrink x3 Terraforming x3 TRAPS (3): Royal Decree x3 EXTRA DECK: Five-Headed Dragon x1 Black Rose Dragon x1 Blackwing Armor Master x1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier x1 Colossal Fighter x1 Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg x1 Dragunity Knight - Vajrayna x3 Goyo Guardian x1 Red Dragon Archfiend x1 Scrap Dragon x1 Stardust Dragon x1 Thought Ruler Archfiend x1 Trident Dragion x1

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 ———————————————— Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned by "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6", and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. During either player's turn, when a Spell Card is activated: You can negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it. You must control this face-up card to activate and to resolve this effect. ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Soul of the Duelist (SOD-EN008), Elemental Energy: Special Edition  (EEN-ENSE1), Dark Revelation Volume 3 (DR3-EN008), Legendary Collection 3: Yugi's World Mega Pack (LCYW-EN199), Duelist League 17 (DL17-EN007)
There are many methods to assure our victory beyond staying aggresive. One of these routes is to negate effects, assuring the opponent wastes resources as well restricting their options. This is a common defensive option to deal with the opponent's turn as their setups and best summons are countered before is too late, giving us the upper hand once our turn starts over. However, some strategies goes a step further and tries to block as many cards as possible, completely shutting down entire groups of cards or even whole Decks with their mere pressence.
"Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8" is the most famous of the LV series to the point of reaching a competitive status during its glory days, and still is a fearsome creature to face against. "LV8" is a nomi monster requiring the assistance of "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6" to be summoned from our hand or Deck, which needs to defeat a monster to turn into their final form once the turn ends. "Horus" has a single yet completely dominant effect which allow us to negate the activation of Spell Cards, not completely restricting the usage but rather allow us to choose which cards to negate. So in other words, "Horus" main objective is to completely forbid the opponent from using their Spell Cards, and with the assistance of a few other cards we're capable to create an absolute lockdown on the opponent's Deck.
The summoning of "LV8" is far easier than might look, capable to bring its dominant effect far before the opponent is able to play any Spell Cards. Although "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6" can be brought to the field with their base form "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4", "LV6" has no restrictions whatsoever to allow us to Tribute Summon it with cheap materials like Frogs or cheap summons like "Jester Confit". Not only that, but as a Dragon gains further assistance from cards like "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon" and "Hieratic Dragon King of Atum", and able to be easily revived afterwards gives us further opportunities to summon "LV8" as well the possibility to gather several copies on our field. With "LV6" having a protection against Spells the chances to defeat a monster in battle increases with further assistance of cards like "Enemy Controller" and "Shrink" dealing with strong enemies, but we can instead completely skip ahead and use "Level Up!" to summon "LV8" without risking our Battle Phase.
With the ability to negate any Spells' activation during any turn and of our choice, "LV8" will shut down all Spell Cards the opponent tries to play against us. Several staple cards like "Raigeki" and "Pot of Desires" as well important cards depending of the Deck's theme will become completely unusable as long "Horus" stays on our field. We can go a step further and shut down other cards to further limit the opponent's options, like "Royal Decree" negating all Trap Cards, cards like "Effect Veiler" and "Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring" stopping certain monster effects, or "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" restricting Special Summons after the arrival of "LV8". Keep on mind that "Horus" won't negate Spell Cards that stayed active before its arrival like the case of Field Spells or Pendulum Monsters, so either try to have some removal effects or assure the opponent doesn't get a chance to use their abilities.
When comes to running a Deck arround the LV archetype, "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8" becomes the primary choice to lead Duels with. It is with obvious reasons, as with a simple summoning condition and the ability to shut down the opponent's Spell Cards is a fearsome creature to face against. Even if the return of "Imperial Order" made it lost its luster due being a far easier card to play with, "Horus" freely allow us to play our Spell Cards along other effects further restricting the opponent's options. If anything the prominence of monster effects over Spell Cards in several Decks made negating the latter less efficient on the long run, but with the several effects and summoning tools "Horus" can easily play along allows it to create a lockdown strategy with a powerful LV monster leading the way through.
Personal Rating: A
+ Negates the activation of Spell Cards of our choice + Easy to summon + Several effects to work along and further restrict the opponent's options
- Relies on other cards for its summon - Spell Cards lost prevalence over Effect Monsters - "Imperial Order" might be a simpler option to deal with Spell Cards

I'm trying to decide whether to keep Solidarity in my Horus deck or replace it with Shrink. Solidarity benefits all my monsters, lasts an extended duration, and gets more valuable with every attack, but it fizzles out if one of my few non-Dragon Synchro monsters goes into the graveyard, doesn't help if the opposing monsters are still somehow bigger than mine, and most importantly can't affect Horus LV6. Shrink, meanwhile, can be used as a battle trick, is almost guaranteed to ensure my monster wins the battle, can be used in response to other things like MST, and DOES work with Horus LV6 since it's not the card being targeted, but each copy is one-use, only helps if the opposing monster is in attack position, and can be potentially baited out or used at the wrong time. Solidarity would require I get a monster in the graveyard, but with how LV monsters work, this deck has an easy time managing that, especially with Future Fusion. Plus, a 3300 Stardust Dragon would be very difficult to contend with. Solidarity has worked well so far, but maybe in a PvP context, Shrink would be better

Because I've realized I've never posted it, I want to share the current version of my Horus Disaster Dragon deck. I think it's easily my favorite deck in Reverse of Arcadia, and in its current incarnation I find it phenomenally cool. This isn't a proper profile, as I plan on uploading all my Dragon decks to serve as a comprehensive guide to playing and building different Disaster Dragon decks in ROA, but I think my current deck is so cool and fun that I want to preserve a record of it in its current incarnation in case I change anything later. It's kinda hard to explain, but I just... I like to play it, I like to look at it, I like to talk about it. It pleases me in just about every way I expect a deck to, an excellent aesthetic paired with gameplay that's effective, fun, and really cool. I beat New Game+ using this list almost exclusively, and had a pretty great time with it. And now, I share it with you! Over the Nexus Deck Profile: Horus Lockdown
Tumblr media
Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 is probably the most beloved floodgate in the game. Being a powerful, FIRE-attribute Dragon that referenced the game's Egyptian inspirations whilst not being overtly associated with any particular anime characters (the guy from GX doesn't count) makes Horus distinct and fascinating, especially for a DM era monster. Its goal is simple: summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 and have Royal Decree running at the same time to lock the opponent out of spells and traps, forcing them to rely on monsters. Koa'ki Meiru Drago in turn helps restrict those monsters, though notably it doesn't stop this deck's primary weakness; Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. Fortunately, this deck is not entirely reliant on summoning Horus to win, as the standard Dragon engine is powerful enough to win games on its own if you're lucky. My build prefers to summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 directly instead of relying on LV4, but using LV4 is still viable, thanks to Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg making it searchable. Regardless, LV4 is good for making sure we can get to Horus LV8 as soon as possible. If something happens to Horus LV8, Pot of Avarice helps to recycle it, allowing it to potentially be Summoned again. All versions of Horus appreciate Book of Moon, an all-purpose tool that can make it easier for them to destroy opposing monsters to enable their level up. A Dragunity package is played here to enable Synchro Summons, as Stardust Dragon in particular helps a lot to keep Horus safe. Here's the list: MONSTERS (20): Dragunity Dux x2 Dragunity Phalanx x2 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 x1 Koa'ki Meiru Drago x3 Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon x3 Red-Eyes Wyvern x3 SPELLS (17): Book of Moon x3 Dark Hole x1 Dragon Ravine x3 Future Fusion x1 Gold Sarcophagus x2 Monster Reborn x1 Mystical Space Typhoon x2 Pot of Avarice x1 Terraforming x3 TRAPS (3): Royal Decree x3 EXTRA DECK: Five-Headed Dragon x1 Ally of Justice Catastor x1 Black Rose Dragon x1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier x1 Colossal Fighter x1 Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg x1 Dragunity Knight - Vajrayana x1 Goyo Guardian x1 Red Dragon Archfiend x1 Red Nova Dragon x1 Scrap Dragon x1 Stardust Dragon x1 Thought Ruler Archfiend x1 Trident Dragion x1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier x1

World Championship 2008 Deck Profile: Red-Eyes Horus
Tumblr media
The inspiration from this deck was finding out that the "Let's Power Up This Deck! (With Booster Packs)" pamphlet for Structure Deck: Dragon's Roar depicted Horus the Black Flame Dragon without elaboration, and that got me thinking of what a cool combination these two themes would be. The two actually do synergize: The easily summoned Red-Eyes Black Dragon comes out early and forces the opponent to play defensively, making their monsters more vulnerable to being destroyed by Horus LV4, while Horus leveling up will empower Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon. The two don't directly help one another, but in playing parallel to each other they do ultimately support each other. There's something oddly poetic about that. Here's the list: MONSTERS (20): Red-Eyes B. Dragon x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 x1 Masked Dragon x3 Mirage Dragon x3 Red-Eyes B. Chick x2 Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon x1 Twin-Headed Behemoth x1 SPELLS (10): Book of Moon x1 Brain Control x1 Dragon's Mirror x1 Future Fusion x1 Gold Sarcophagus x1 Heavy Storm x1 Mystical Space Typhoon x1 Premature Burial x1 Summoner's Art x2 TRAPS (10): Call of the Haunted x1 Crush Card Virus x1 Dimensional Prison x2 Mirror Force x1 Royal Decree x2 Solemn Judgment x2 Torrential Tribute x1 FUSIONS (30): Alligator's Sword Dragon x2 B. World Championship 2008 Deck Profile: Horus Lockdown
Tumblr media
In contrast with a more Dragon-oriented build, this version of Horus is designed to do one thing: Stop your opponent from playing the game. It achieves this by individually nullifying the effects of their Spell, Trap, and Monster cards, using Horus himself, Jinzo or Royal Decree, and Destiny HERO - Plasma. Plasma also enables the Destiny Draw engine, and by extension, Crush Card Virus. This deck's weakness lies in its consistency, as a low number of easy normal summons threatens to hold it back, but Cyber Dragons and Destiny Draw help pull things together. You often don't need to achieve a full lock, but doing so is more or less a guaranteed victory. Here's the list: MONSTERS (20): Cyber Dragon x3 D.D. Warrior Lady x1 Destiny Hero - Disk Commander x1 Destiny Hero - Malicious x2 Destiny Hero - Plasma x3 Elemental Hero Stratos x1 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 x1 Jinzo x2 SPELLS (10): Brain Control x1 Destiny Draw x3 Heavy Storm x1 Mystical Space Typhoon x1 Reinforcement of the Army x2 Scapegoat x1 TRAPS (10): Call of the Haunted x1 Crush Card Virus x1 Dimensional Prison x2 Mirror Force x1 Royal Decree x2 Solemn Judgment x2 Torrential Tribute x1 FUSIONS (18): Chimeratech Fortress Dragon x3 Chimeratech Overdragon x3 Cyber End Dragon x3 Cyber Twin Dragon x3 F.G.D. x3 UFOroid Fighter x3

Silent Swordsman LV5 ———————————————— Unaffected by your opponent's Spell effects. During your next Standby Phase after this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent by a direct attack: You can send this face-up card to the Graveyard; Special Summon 1 "Silent Swordsman LV7" from your hand or Deck. ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Flaming Eternity (FET-EN008), Elemental Energy: Special Edition (EEN-ENSE4), Dark Revelation Volume 3 (DR3-EN128), Legendary Collection 3: Yugi's World Mega Pack (LCYW-EN034), Starter Deck Yugi - Reloaded (YSYR-EN018), Yugi's Legendary Decks (YGLD-ENC07), Duelist Pack: Rivals of the Pharaoh (DPRP-EN017), Duel Terminal 5b (DT05-EN056)
LV Monsters belong to an archetype which every single member needs their own Deck. Similar to some Xyz Monsters which turn into stronger forms, a LV Deck invests most of their resources on summoning the strongest form of one of these creatures. However, while some LV Decks will completely focus on summoning a powerful creature, some LV monsters can fit in any Deck on their own and provide plenty of support to many strategies.
"Silent Swordsman LV5" is a resiliant monster that completely shuts down one of the most common threats nowadays. While on the field "LV5" becomes completely invulnerable against any kind of Spells the opponent might play, ranging from mass removal to targetting effects. However, as part of the LV archetype "LV5" can replace itself with his strongest counterpart "Silent Swordsman LV7", and to do so much go to the Graveyard from our Standby Phase after a succesful direct attack. While "LV7" can become highly disruptive along two archetypes to work arround its forms, "Silent Swordsman LV5" can become quite a problem if the opponent doesn't bypass its protective effect quickly.
As pointed out, Silent Swordsman forms not only gains the support of LV options but also their very own archetype. The default option is by starting with "Silent Swordsman LV3" going to the Graveyard during our Standby Phase, easily achieved if we bait opponent attacks to monsters like "Shining Angel" as well revival effects such as "Limit Reverse" bringing back "LV3" as soon their turn is about to end. However, the member outside the LV group "Silent Swordsman" has the opportunity to summon any Silent Swordsman including "LV7", so once is taken down by the opponent we can bring either "LV5" or "LV7" depending of the situation. While has two monsters to assist its arrival as well "Level Up!" to skip the conditions of "LV3" and "Silent Sword Slash" to search for any of its forms, keep on mind that "LV5" can simply be brough by Tribute Summon as well revival effects in late game. Therefore, either we invest a whole Deck on the arrival of "LV5" and "LV7", or work arround options such as Frogs and "The Monarchs Stormforth" for an immediate arrival right from our first turns.
The role of "LV5" will highly depend of how much we'll invest a Deck arround it. Some builds can simply Tribute Summon and together with cards like "Royal Decree" and "Effect Veiler" completely shut down any dangerous Trap or Monster effects aiming towards "LV5". By also ignoring common threats such as "Raigeki" and "Forbidden Lance", "LV5" can easily be added in any Deck that needs a sturdy monster. With its own effect and basic coverage, is quite easy for "LV5" soon or later direct attack the opponent and become "LV7" in our next turn. And in any circumstances or strategy we shouldn't worry about stronger monsters confronting "LV5", as with the use of "Silent Sword Slash" will obtain an immense stat boost to easily take down any enemies while also gaining protection against any effects coming from our opponent.
At first "Silent Swordsman LV7" might seem a better choice thanks to locking down all Spell Cards as well becoming quickly available by "Silent Swordsman", but that won't overshadow "Silent Swordsman LV5" that easily. Even if "LV5" has to deal with a rough competition for the high Level spot from monsters like Monarchs and "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6" with a stronger ability, "LV5" has enough options to either be played solo or with some basic coverage. Even though Monster effects are more recurrent thant Spell effects as years passes, "LV5" is in a solid position to deal with any openings thanks to cards like "Royal Decree" and "Silent Swords Slash". Overall "Silent Swordsman LV5" might have it tough to stand out, but as a fan favorite with its own options can have different purposes depending of the build is added.
Personal Rating: B+
+ Protection against opponent's Spell Cards and effects + Can summon "Silent Swordsman LV7" a turn after a succesful direct attack + Well supported to work on its own or with its archetypes
- Overshadowed by other high Level monsters - Might rely on coverage against Trap Cards and Monster effects
