Over the Nexus Deck Profile: Horus Lockdown
Tumblr media
Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 is probably the most beloved floodgate in the game. Being a powerful, FIRE-attribute Dragon that referenced the game's Egyptian inspirations whilst not being overtly associated with any particular anime characters (the guy from GX doesn't count) makes Horus distinct and fascinating, especially for a DM era monster. Its goal is simple: summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 and have Royal Decree running at the same time to lock the opponent out of spells and traps, forcing them to rely on monsters. Koa'ki Meiru Drago in turn helps restrict those monsters, though notably it doesn't stop this deck's primary weakness; Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. Fortunately, this deck is not entirely reliant on summoning Horus to win, as the standard Dragon engine is powerful enough to win games on its own if you're lucky. My build prefers to summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 directly instead of relying on LV4, but using LV4 is still viable, thanks to Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg making it searchable. Regardless, LV4 is good for making sure we can get to Horus LV8 as soon as possible. If something happens to Horus LV8, Pot of Avarice helps to recycle it, allowing it to potentially be Summoned again. All versions of Horus appreciate Book of Moon, an all-purpose tool that can make it easier for them to destroy opposing monsters to enable their level up. A Dragunity package is played here to enable Synchro Summons, as Stardust Dragon in particular helps a lot to keep Horus safe. Here's the list: MONSTERS (20): Dragunity Dux x2 Dragunity Phalanx x2 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 x3 Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 x1 Koa'ki Meiru Drago x3 Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon x3 Red-Eyes Wyvern x3 SPELLS (17): Book of Moon x3 Dark Hole x1 Dragon Ravine x3 Future Fusion x1 Gold Sarcophagus x2 Monster Reborn x1 Mystical Space Typhoon x2 Pot of Avarice x1 Terraforming x3 TRAPS (3): Royal Decree x3 EXTRA DECK: Five-Headed Dragon x1 Ally of Justice Catastor x1 Black Rose Dragon x1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier x1 Colossal Fighter x1 Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg x1 Dragunity Knight - Vajrayana x1 Goyo Guardian x1 Red Dragon Archfiend x1 Red Nova Dragon x1 Scrap Dragon x1 Stardust Dragon x1 Thought Ruler Archfiend x1 Trident Dragion x1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier x1

@ygoc-week day 3!
YU-GI-OH! 5D’s — RAIN ORICHALCUM
DECKS! Rain once had her archetype of choice countered in tournament, so she swaps decks often thanks to the lingering paranoia.
I mainly did it so I could give a lot of variety to the duels and give love to both 5D’s era and older decks that don’t get to appear in the anime! There are a handful of original cards, but I’ll go over those later. First, introducing a nice collage of ace monsters/cards representing her archetypal decks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She uses a Blue-Eyes mixed with good dragon cards as her “primary” deck and I ABSOLUTELY made an original line of Synchros: Orichalcos Dragon/Orichalcos Deuteros Dragon/Orichalcos Tritos Dragon :o) Also, because she has the anime-esque Timaeus, Hermos, and Critias cards, we get to see a lot of neat fusions! Like Hermos + Exploder Dragon, for example, making an equip spell that prevents destruction by battle, destroys the monster it battled with, but prevents battle damage
The Crimson Dragon card didn’t exist when I wrote my series, so I made my own 😂 YES they get attack and effect names! YES the characters yell them out! YES I had so much fun with this The Crimson Dragon 8-Star, LIGHT Attribute [Dragon/Synchro/Effect] [2500 ATK / 2000 DEF] 1 LIGHT Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monster(s) When this card is Special Summoned: you can target one of your opponent’s monsters. As long as this card is on the field, that monster’s effect is negated. (Ability Name: Crimson Masquerade) When this card battles a monster targeted by this effect, during the Damage Step only, this card gains ATK equal to the ATK of the targeted monster. (Ability Name: Crimson Star Flight) At your End Phase, you can send this card to the graveyard; special summon it during your next Standby Phase. (Ability Name: Crimson Molting) and a good old season 2 leveled up version of him! Akakiryu of the Sacred Flame 12-Star, LIGHT Attribute [Dragon/Synchro/Effect] [3000 ATK / 2500 DEF] 1 LIGHT Tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner monsters When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can destroy all Spell and Trap Cards your opponent controls. [Ability Name: Ignite the Sacred Flame] Once per turn, if this card is targeted by your opponent's card effect (Quick Effect): you can negate and banish that card. [Ability Name: Sacred Cinder Disarmament] Once per turn, you can deduct 1000 ATK from this card to target one monster on the field; banish that target. During your next Standby Phase, this card's ATK becomes its original (printed) ATK. [Ability Name: To Sacred Ashes]
AND NOW a fun excerpt from the fic with Akakiryu because I adore fire descriptions my friends. (From Jack's POV, and you will see Beelzeus here, I be giving the enemies some OP cards too haha)
--------------------
Rain tossed her head back. A crack of lightning lit her grin.
“I am not running.”
Fire blazed to life. Orange sparks licked the air. Water hissed against flame, and steam flooded the ground. I shielded my eyes from the blaze with my forearm. The flames spurted from the earth itself and raced around the port in a circle. I shouted, “Rain!”
“No use,” Syd said. “She’s gotta be burning alive by now, and thanks to her own psychic powers.”
My brow furrowed. The way the fire had come to life was similar to a night of war several months ago. This blaze wasn’t causing destruction, though. The memory gave birth to a mad idea.
I stretched my arm towards the flames. Fire licked my fingers. Instead of raw pain, a kind warmth found me – one I had known before. I glanced out from the awning and up to the sky. The red flare reflected against the black clouds: the full glyph of the Crimson Dragon.
Rain dropped to her knees among the flames. They clung to her skin, hair, and clothes without leaving scars. Maroon marks on her pale face, shoulders, and arms pulsed with a bright, red glow like a slow heartbeat. Fangs protruded from her kind smile. Her hands clasped together. Rain said, “White Stone of Legend tunes with Horus LV8 and Exploder Dragon. With one LIGHT tuner and two monsters, I call upon the legendary power of old.”
The flames leapt from the ground and spiraled into a pillar from her place of prayer. Cinders sparkled around her, leapt towards her duel disk, and formed a white-hot rectangle. A trio of humongous green rings formed as a column towards the sky. Their color tinged red. Rain’s eyes shot open, and their irises shifted to crimson. Her whisper echoed across the bay like the shouts of thousands. “Synchro Summon: Akakiryu of the Sacred Flame.”
A tornado of pure flames ripped to life on the pier. Gold and red blended like a blazing autumn. Black clouds scattered, and rainwater evaporated. Fiery wings extended from the twister. A lengthy, skinny tail whipped from the phenomena, and the fire scattered from the dragon’s body. Akakiryu opened its mouth, revealing a bright, yellow tongue matching the startling color of its eyes.
Rain pushed to her feet, reached out her fist, and lifted her index finger. “Ability one. Upon summoning, all of your spells and traps are destroyed. Ignite the Sacred Flame!”
The blaze returned to the earth, tearing through Syd’s backline. The remaining Block Dugout and Nightmare Wheel shattered. Rain’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon was freed from its torture. Syd said, “So what? A fancy light show don’t mean nothin’. You got 3000 attack, which don’t match up. Even if it did, Beelzeus here can’t be destroyed.”
Rain extended her middle finger. “Ability two. By deducting 1000 attack from Akakiryu, I banish one monster on the field. Beelzeus is judged not fit for this world by the strength of a god.”
“Not so fast!” Syd said. “I discard Effect Veiler from my hand to negate your monster’s abilities!”
Rain’s ring finger popped up. “Ability three. Once per turn, I negate an ability that targets Akakiryu and banish the offender. Sacred Cinder Disarmament!”
Akakiryu spit a flare into the sky. It landed on the ghostly Effect Veiler, locking it in a fiery bubble. The sphere closed to crush the monster. Rain said, “Ability two continues! To Sacred Ashes!”
Beelzeus shied back from the intense heat of Akakiryu. The dragon flapped its wings forward. A pair of flame tornadoes approached Beelzeus. The twisters spun around the black dragon. Beelzeus attempted to flee the encroaching fire to no avail. The tornadoes captured Syd’s Synchro. Their ferocity enticed a pained roar from Beelzeus. Akakiryu’s attack spiraled faster before dissipating with nary a whisper.
“Shit,” Syd said, “the hell kinda card is that?”
I found the strength to stand. “A dragon who does not lose.”
“Akakiryu’s current attack is 2000,” Rain said, “equal to your remaining life points. Direct attack! Blazing Crimson Flight!”
Akakiryu unfurled its wings. A golden flare danced to the tips. The dragon’s cry deafened the quaking thunder. Akakiryu dove onto Syd and skimmed the ground, leaving the bay ablaze. His holler could barely be heard over the roar of the flames.
A slice caught my attention. Akakiryu cut down my runner and held it in his two claws. He lowered it to sit on its wheel beside Rain and curled around her. Black ashes from the destroyed monsters clung to her sweaty skin. Her criminal mark glowed with the golden reflection of Akakiryu’s light through the dirt.
Rain beamed at the glowing monster. She leapt towards its snout and wrapped her arms around it. I was taken aback. Instead of worshipper and god, she embraced Akakiryu like a daughter to a father. Much to my surprise, the dragon shut its eyes and leaned into it.
With a chuckle, I said, “Welcome home.”

For AE verse for Scribe Malik... Should I go with Horus Black Flame Dragon or maybe Duamutef, Blessing of Horus?
I'm leaning towards Duamutef since it's a jackal and would fit Malik especially in that verse since he's quite perceptive and more aligned towards truth.
I also think it's just got a wonderful aesthetic as a YGO monster.
Duamutef Blessing of Horus

Y'know what I really like Tyrant Dragon and Horus the Black Flame Dragon. When it comes to DM era Dragon-type monsters in Yugioh, Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Dragon dominate the conversation, and that's understandable, as they are the classics, but Tyrant Dragon and Horus have surpassed them in my heart this year as my favorites. Tyrant Dragon was likely designed to represent, y'know The Dragon, as a concept. Several of the Dragon support cards introduced in Legacy of Darkness feature Tyrant Dragon in their artwork, and to me it looks like it was designed to be the boss monster of general Dragon decks. Meanwhile, Horus came out later, but was the centerpiece of the new LV monster gimmick, and outshined the others by actually being kind of good! Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 is still an incredibly powerful card, but my favorite thing about it is that it not just enables a very fun aggro-lockdown strategy, it also has some absolutely beautiful artwork. Tyrant Dragon is a classic dragon with all the essential characteristics, which is great, but what's also great is Horus, with its design applying Ancient Egyptian imagery and visual styles to the anatomy of a more European-styled Dragon, and the result looks fantastic. It helps that they're both Fire attribute too!

My New Year's Resolution
My New Year's resolution is to finally put some words to paper. Maybe maintain this blog a little bit, and update it with some things I'm doing online.
For a little context, today is the 18th of December in 2023. I'm trying to get a head start on all the resolution stuff. More importantly, I finally have some free time to myself after some particularly busy months.
Now to get to the actual meat and potatoes: For the past week and a half, I've been nostalgia-ing over some of my old YuGiOh cards. I recently found out about a format that people play called GOAT format, named so both because it is regarded as the golden age of YuGiOh, and for the popularity and power of the card Scapegoat.
Only cards up to a certain set are allowed to be played, meaning all the power and speed of the newer cards isn't really in the game yet. The first real banlist also hadn't been established yet, so you still get to use cards like Pot of Greed. Most importantly though, I already have a lot of the cards.
I have enough cards to almost fully make the current most competitive deck, or I could split them and sort of make two decks that I could supplement with newer cards. I liked that much better and now have two decks that I hope to bust out some time when I have interested friends over.
The decks are based around the LV cards; Armed Dragon LV7, and Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8.
They're all sleeved up and ready to go; I'm really looking forward to trying them out. One decklist is a little more faithful to the time, and the other has some newer, but hopefully weaker cards added. We'll see who comes out on top!
Just a short post for now, but it seems like a good start.
Current WPM: ~70

Today's V-Jump reveals feature a FIRE Dragon Theme, which is technically composed of two different archetypes. Second archetype features the theme's Synchros.
The new theme isn't particularly special, it exists, because there hasn't been many dedicated FIRE Dragon themes yet.
****
Tomorrow may be another Legacy of Destruction reveal, though it will likely be related to Snake-Eyes. Alternatively, it may be the February set's reveals.
We'll see.
Edit: I forgot about Evolzars, and Horus the Black Flame Dragons. Most of the Flamvells are FIRE Dragon as well. This has been fixed.

I think the next DS game I'm going to look into is GX Spirit Caller! The format looks very interesting, with Stratos (called Airman in this game) at 3 and Cyber Dragon being a main deck staple. It's a very different game from the World Championship series, instead being evocative of Nightmare Troubadour, except with a real cardpool. The elephant in the room though, is the same elephant that was in Nightmare Troubadour, Cyber-Stein being legal at 3. Stein warps the deck building meta around it, and it can be hard to justify playing anything besides Stein OTK decks on a practical level, especially since Megamorph is also unlimited, and Last Will is legal at 1. I've come up with a couple Stein builds I think are actually cool, being a Stein-Horus deck that takes advantage of Last Will and a Dragon-Stein deck based around how a lot of the cards that support Stein also support Lord of D., but I'm gonna try to avoid relying on it too much for the sake of variety. Beyond Stein, the set of three each of of Cyber Dragon and Elemental Hero Stratos provides a powerful offensive backbone to any deck, especially fusion based ones, which typically struggle with that if they don't open well. Cyber Dragon has three different fusion monsters you can make with it, and Stratos can be used to search Elemental Hero Sparkman, which when paired with King of the Swamp can make either Thunder Giant, or my go-to, Shining Flare Wingman. There's something fascinating about seeing Shining Flare Wingman be this accessible even outside Elemental Hero decks, and it really enhances the early GX aesthetic of this game!

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 ———————————————— Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned by "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6", and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. During either player's turn, when a Spell Card is activated: You can negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it. You must control this face-up card to activate and to resolve this effect. ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Soul of the Duelist (SOD-EN008), Elemental Energy: Special Edition  (EEN-ENSE1), Dark Revelation Volume 3 (DR3-EN008), Legendary Collection 3: Yugi's World Mega Pack (LCYW-EN199), Duelist League 17 (DL17-EN007)
There are many methods to assure our victory beyond staying aggresive. One of these routes is to negate effects, assuring the opponent wastes resources as well restricting their options. This is a common defensive option to deal with the opponent's turn as their setups and best summons are countered before is too late, giving us the upper hand once our turn starts over. However, some strategies goes a step further and tries to block as many cards as possible, completely shutting down entire groups of cards or even whole Decks with their mere pressence.
"Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8" is the most famous of the LV series to the point of reaching a competitive status during its glory days, and still is a fearsome creature to face against. "LV8" is a nomi monster requiring the assistance of "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6" to be summoned from our hand or Deck, which needs to defeat a monster to turn into their final form once the turn ends. "Horus" has a single yet completely dominant effect which allow us to negate the activation of Spell Cards, not completely restricting the usage but rather allow us to choose which cards to negate. So in other words, "Horus" main objective is to completely forbid the opponent from using their Spell Cards, and with the assistance of a few other cards we're capable to create an absolute lockdown on the opponent's Deck.
The summoning of "LV8" is far easier than might look, capable to bring its dominant effect far before the opponent is able to play any Spell Cards. Although "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6" can be brought to the field with their base form "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4", "LV6" has no restrictions whatsoever to allow us to Tribute Summon it with cheap materials like Frogs or cheap summons like "Jester Confit". Not only that, but as a Dragon gains further assistance from cards like "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon" and "Hieratic Dragon King of Atum", and able to be easily revived afterwards gives us further opportunities to summon "LV8" as well the possibility to gather several copies on our field. With "LV6" having a protection against Spells the chances to defeat a monster in battle increases with further assistance of cards like "Enemy Controller" and "Shrink" dealing with strong enemies, but we can instead completely skip ahead and use "Level Up!" to summon "LV8" without risking our Battle Phase.
With the ability to negate any Spells' activation during any turn and of our choice, "LV8" will shut down all Spell Cards the opponent tries to play against us. Several staple cards like "Raigeki" and "Pot of Desires" as well important cards depending of the Deck's theme will become completely unusable as long "Horus" stays on our field. We can go a step further and shut down other cards to further limit the opponent's options, like "Royal Decree" negating all Trap Cards, cards like "Effect Veiler" and "Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring" stopping certain monster effects, or "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" restricting Special Summons after the arrival of "LV8". Keep on mind that "Horus" won't negate Spell Cards that stayed active before its arrival like the case of Field Spells or Pendulum Monsters, so either try to have some removal effects or assure the opponent doesn't get a chance to use their abilities.
When comes to running a Deck arround the LV archetype, "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8" becomes the primary choice to lead Duels with. It is with obvious reasons, as with a simple summoning condition and the ability to shut down the opponent's Spell Cards is a fearsome creature to face against. Even if the return of "Imperial Order" made it lost its luster due being a far easier card to play with, "Horus" freely allow us to play our Spell Cards along other effects further restricting the opponent's options. If anything the prominence of monster effects over Spell Cards in several Decks made negating the latter less efficient on the long run, but with the several effects and summoning tools "Horus" can easily play along allows it to create a lockdown strategy with a powerful LV monster leading the way through.
Personal Rating: A
+ Negates the activation of Spell Cards of our choice + Easy to summon + Several effects to work along and further restrict the opponent's options
- Relies on other cards for its summon - Spell Cards lost prevalence over Effect Monsters - "Imperial Order" might be a simpler option to deal with Spell Cards

I.
1. My God, how I love Thee!
2. With the vehement appetite of a beast I hunt Thee through the Universe.
3. Thou art standing as it were upon a pinnacle at the edge of some fortified city. I am a white bird, and perch upon Thee.
4. Thou art My Lover: I see Thee as a nymph with her white limbs stretched by the spring.
5. She lies upon the moss; there is none other but she:
6. Art Thou not Pan?
7. I am He. Speak not, O my God! Let the work be accomplished in silence.
8. Let my cry of pain be crystallized into a little white fawn to run away into the forest!
9. Thou art a centaur, O my God, from the violet-blossoms that crown Thee to the hoofs of the horse.
10. Thou art harder than tempered steel; there is no diamond beside Thee.
11. Did I not yield this body and soul?
12. I woo thee with a dagger drawn across my throat.
13. Let the spout of blood quench Thy blood-thirst, O my God!
14. Thou art a little white rabbit in the burrow Night.
15. I am greater than the fox and the hole.
16. Give me Thy kisses, O Lord God!
17. The lightning came and licked up the little flock of sheep.
18. There is a tongue and a flame; I see that trident walking over the sea.
19. A phoenix hath it for its head; below are two prongs. They spear the wicked.
20. I will spear Thee, O Thou little grey god, unless Thou beware!
21. From the grey to the gold; from the gold to that which is beyond the gold of Ophir.
22. My God! but I love Thee!
23. Why hast Thou whispered so ambiguous things? Wast Thou afraid, O goat-hoofed One, O horned One, O pillar of lightning?
24. From the lightning fall pearls; from the pearls black specks of nothing.
25. I based all on one, one on naught.
26. Afloat in the aether, O my God, my God!
27. O Thou great hooded sun of glory, cut off these eyelids!
28. Nature shall die out; she hideth me, closing mine eyelids with fear, she hideth me from My destruction, O Thou open eye.
29. O ever-weeping One!
30. Not Isis my mother, nor Osiris my self; but the incestuous Horus given over to Typhon, so may I be!
31. There thought; and thought is evil.
32. Pan! Pan! Io Pan! it is enough.
33. Fall not into death, O my soul! Think that death is the bed into which you are falling!
34. O how I love Thee, O my God! Especially is there a vehement parallel light from infinity, vilely diffracted in the haze of this mind.
35. I love Thee. I love Thee. I love Thee.
36. Thou art a beautiful thing whiter than a woman in the column of this vibration.
37. I shoot up vertically like an arrow, and become that Above.
38. But it is death, and the flame of the pyre.
39. Ascend in the flame of the pyre, O my soul! Thy God is like the cold emptiness of the utmost heaven, into which thou radiatest thy little light.
40. When Thou shall know me, O empty God, my flame shall utterly expire in Thy great N. O. X.
41. What shalt Thou be, my God, when I have ceased to love Thee?
42. A worm, a nothing, a niddering knave!
43. But Oh! I love Thee.
44. I have thrown a million flowers from the basket of the Beyond at Thy feet, I have anointed Thee and Thy Staff with oil and blood and kisses.
45. I have kindled Thy marble into life - ay! into death.
46. I have been smitten with the reek of Thy mouth, that drinketh never wine but life.
47. How the dew of the Universe whitens the lips!
48. Ah! trickling flow of the stars of the mother Supernal, begone!
49. I Am She that should come, the Virgin of all men.
