So I was rewatching some of the animated cutscenes from Superstars and…
Wait. That’s that’s not Hidden Palace Zone, the underground sanctuary for the Master Emerald and Super Emeralds we see in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. That’s the Altar of the Emerald from Sonic Adventure.
From Sonic Adventure. A modern game.
Obviously we’ve seen tons of classic stuff in modern titles—Sonic fans will forever bemoan the constant return of stages like Green Hill and Chemical Plant—but as far as I can remember, this is the first time that an element from a modern title make its way into a classic style game. Sure, I think most people associate the Master Emerald closer with an open, ancient stone shrine than the crystal caverns of Hidden Palace, but with how stingy Sega is about this kind of stuff, I’m surprised that they put this in.
It’s not just ingame, either! The Altar of the Emerald shows up in the promo comic they posted on social media leading up to the game’s release, alongside Hidden Palace Zone. One has not replaced the other; Sega is treating them as two separate locations. And they still chose to show the one originating from the modern game in the classic game.
This…feels significant, or at least I want to say that it does. Remember that this is Sega we’re dealing with, who tries to segregate modern and classic Sonic from each other as much as possible. The “Classic Sonic is from another dimension” isn’t canon anymore, but there are still a lot of weird mandates in place on the matter. They’ve gone on record to say that classic characters like Fang are barred from showing up in modern properties, not for any narrative purpose, but for branding. Yet, here we are with an iconic location from the first modern Sonic game rearing its head at the end of the newest classic Sonic game.
While realistically this was done in Superstars because it was easier to drop Knuckles off there and show him “back at his post” than in a secret underground cave, the optimist in me says that maybe this is Sega being more lenient on their classic/modern split. I hope, anyways.
