Outlast Characters and a variant S/O
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I don't want to go among mad people!"
"Oh, you can't help that. Most everyone's mad, here. You may have noticed...that I'm not all there myself..." - The Cheshire Cat
Synopsis: You're a variant who escaped from Murkoff amongst the chaos and the bloodshed. You're more aware of your madness than the others, and you always have a way of escaping danger.
You're essentially like the Cheshire Cat. I totally didn't get inspired after watching Disney's Alice in Wonderland or anything like that...
Again, these can be seen as platonic or romantic. All up to you.
Enjoy!
(❁)----------------------------------------------------------------------
Miles finds you amusing the moment he sees you grinning and making remarks about his missing fingers. Your outfit is stained with blood, yet none of your own, and he can tell you're a tough cookie. You intrigue him.
Waylon is freaked out. He doesn't want to be rude, as you clearly went through hell here, and the last thing you needed was to be told that you were horrifying, but you just... weird him out. Your eyes are unblinking, you hum, your grins are wide and unsettling...he's surprised you haven't shoved a knife in him, yet. He guides you out, but he's cautious.
Blake is reminded of Val, if he's being honest. You both act somewhat alike, even your outfits were somewhat alike; you're wearing a dirty uniform that obviously came from an asylum, and Val wore remains of their cassock. He'd much rather deal with a variant than a cultist, he's sure of that. You're helpful, too. Giving him hints and deciphering the Latin phrases scattered among the town of Temple Gate.
Lynn is reminded of Val, too. You were taken in hours earlier, and you found your way to Lynn after traversing through the tunnels. You looked to her pregnant stomach with a look of knowing and a chilling grin, questioning her if she knew her child was one of delusion and falseness. She was...confused as to what you meant, but you wouldn't continue. Val, however, got a little angry at you for suggesting that their lord was nothing but a simple trick of the mind. You didn't seem to care, however.
Trager is intrigued, as well. You popped up in his little section of the asylum, curious about his work, and he didn't have the ability to shoo you away or steal your tongue. He tried so hard to understand you, and yet he couldn't, to his dismay. You're a hell of a lot more interesting than the priest or his little buddy.
Jeremy is freaked the fuck out and thinks you're trying to get revenge on him. He remembers the day he submitted you, and yet here you are, looking into his eyes with wild hair, blood on your uniform, and an unsettling grin that showed off your teeth. He starts to get used to you once you help him escape from the other variants. You know he'll succumb to the Walrider, anyway. Might as well give him hope...
Eddie is fascinated. He could squash you like a bug, and this is something you tell him, but he doesn't wish to. Much like Trager, he tries to understand you. You're so silent, and whenever he's enraged, you're always...gone. He loves the grin on your face, because he has the same exact one!
Walrider and you are one and the same. You disappear at will and love to mess with the other variants. He doesn't care for you that much.
Frank Manera is...freaked out by you. The scary, cannibalistic variant wielding a saw is scared of a silent yet witty variant with a horrifying grin and a wise gaze. He doesn't even try to eat you. The last time he threatened you with a saw, you just grinned at him, your teeth and eyes the only things apparent in the dark room. He felt vulnerable.
Chris doesn't care whatsoever, and is far too focused on locating the Walrider. However, he does find the grinning variant that roams around the upper floors of the asylum a tad too...strange.
Marta is convinced God sent you as a sign to make her stop her 'righteous' activities. Your eyes shine a menacing white, and so do your teeth, and you're all she sees when roaming the dark fields of Temple Gate. She threatens you with a glare and a wave of her weapon, but by the time she's near where you were last standing, you're gone without a trace. Maybe Val sent you as a spy? Who knows.
Val fucking ADORES YOU. An escaped variant from god knows where, they think you're a blessing with your scary aura and your knowledge about their god [which you know nothing about, you just enjoy feeding them bullshit. It's kept you alive]. Your eyes are as white as theirs, and they find you mysterious. You're an enigma. The heretics love hearing you make remarks and rhyme about things. The members of the New Testament used to attempt to ambush the heretics, but after seeing you appear near every entrance with a menacing grin, they've halted all efforts.
Laird and Nick have opposing views. Laird thinks you're a demon of some sort, as no human being has such white eyes, and Nick finds you cool. He enjoys hearing you read to him, as your voice is as smooth as silk.

Outlast, you say? Who are your faves? (Only asking about Outlast 1 and Whistleblower, as I haven't gotten Outlast 2 yet)
Outlast
Miles Upsher: Hey, you know what, this man had the balls to get through his report even though everything screamed at him to get out. I respect that even when I would personally leave the second I saw a desolate room where the light fizzed out.
Chris Walker: I mean, my God, he's horrifying, don't get me wrong. But I still love him because of how much of an impact he builds into the horror of being chased. He's big, he can tear your head off of your body, he growls, he calls you ‘Little Pig’. What's not to love? Also, by the comics, he has a childhood plushie that's a pig, that's really cute.
Richard ‘Rick’ Trager: It's the way he talks, okay? This bastard is horrible right from the get-go but he talks with reason. He's got a job to do and he executes it well with the poor souls that manage to cross his path. Also, the fact that before he turned into a dried-up raisin he tied a sweater around his shoulders in the comics and I’ll never forget that.
William ‘Billy’ Hope/Walrider: This poor guy has the saddest backstory both in-game and in the comics. He was given away by his mother (it may say he gave himself up too in-game but still he was young) to Murkoff to see if he was compatible with the Morphogenic Engine. He was and well you can see how that led up to him becoming the way he is. I just want to give this poor guy a hug, like damn, he deserves better.
The ‘Silky’ Variant: I just want to know what that dude’s deal is with things being silky, like, I gotta know.
Outlast Whistleblower
Waylon Park: Knowing that this man had a family kept replaying in my head when I watched the play-through of the game. He did this for the greater good, he did this for his wife, for his kids. And even at the end when he was going to put his family in danger of releasing the footage he still did it anyway. This man deserves a medal, damn you, someone give this man a well-deserved vacation.
Eddie Gluskin: Because, of course, he is. Who doesn't like a man obsessed with marriage and torturing men to become his dream woman? In all seriousness, I'm afraid of him but his entire character arc gravitated to me. Not only is his childhood horrific but it plays a huge part in who he became and how he shows himself toward others. I feel horrible for him but I want him to stay very far from me, I’d say from a ten-foot pole kinda deal. Sorry, man, I'm not having kids.
Jeremy Blaire: He’s such a dick and his death brought me so much joy. And yet I'm here wanting to learn more about his past and how he became the selfish bastard he is now. Still want to kick his ass though-

Does Miles Upshur is gay??? 👀
My gay heart wants to believe so!
A couple years back, a friend made a super in-depth analysis of Miles through a queer lens and it has me quite convinced that he’s not straight (and as out-of-pocket as this may sound, the Walrider was part of his analysis).
Tumblr media
I’m rambling below here sorry sorry :’)
I like to headcanon him as gay—and I love that he’s become a trans icon for much of the fandom (he gives me a lot of gender envy lolkfjsjbdjs)—so I’m REALLY curious about the intentions behind his character (especially now that he’s a host for the Walrider). Queerness and sexuality have been core themes of the franchise with its allusions to Frankenstein and the Walrider arguably portrayed as the “love child between Wernicke and Alan Turing”.
We know very little about him, but his character seems so familiar to various queer identities. I do appreciate and admire his non-conformity to the “traditional working American man with loving wife and kids” lifestyle. With themes of masculinity, I do wonder if Miles’ sexuality plays (or will play) a role in the overarching narratives.
Sorry for the rambling LOLJSHDHSJD thank you for the inbox submission hehehe

How would a self aware!Walrider Miles Upsur feel about a player!darling? Would a concept be possible? Thank you!
Oh sure! I was actually replaying the original Outlast for this fic :D Forgot how much I love it!
Yandere! Self-Aware! Walrider! Miles Upshur with Player! Darling
Pairing: Romantic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Self-aware AU, Violence, Blood mention, Stalking, Invasion of privacy, Slight intimate implications, Miles gets religious, Pining/Yearning.
Tumblr media
I have a feeling Miles only had an acute sense of being self-aware before he became host to the Walrider.
He had a feeling someone or something was guiding him through the horrors of the asylum.
Yet he had no idea what.
In this AU I'd like to consider the Walrider a connection between Miles world and your world in a way.
Just for this AU the entity has this power.
This could show some explanation for why it's so worshipped in the asylum.
Miles just thought it was the fanatic worship of experimented on patients.
He isn't the most religious person, so he doesn't think much on it.
Miles doesn't fully become aware of there being something much more out there until the Walrider takes him as a host near the end of the game.
It's with the Walrider's help that he finally sees.
Call him crazy but after that he's pretty sure this whole journey he'd had is just a game.
He should've seen the signs before, yet now the Walrider has confirmed everything.
No wonder when he though he died he woke up fine... he was resetting.
Those glimpses of someone he saw? They were his player.
The Walrider was not hurting him... it was helping him.
It has been trying to help him see.
Miles obsession starts like most self-aware yanderes.
He's obsessed with the idea of knowing more about you.
The Walrider is trying to help him learn more, but even its influence isn't strong enough.
With the Walrider's help, Miles can see you through your screen.
Through the Walrider, Miles can learn more about you from watching.
While you're unaware... Miles watches you closely.
The Walrider can sense Miles' emotions and does whatever it can to feed into Miles feeling of obsession towards you.
The Walrider feeds off of the feelings Miles experiences towards you.
Be it obsession, yearning, love, lust, jealousy, whatever it may be... The Walrider feeds off it.
When the Walrider took over, Miles gained control of himself mostly.
You no longer guided him... and you had no idea how intently he was watching you.
In his world he only ever saw violence.
In the asylum he's seen blood, gore, gruesome murders, and scenes he wishes he could purge from his mind.
Now... the Walrider has presented him a gift.
Perhaps that pastor was right, now he can believe.
The Walrider can help him obtain something divine.
It can help him obtain you.
The Walrider always tunes him in to watch you.
Anything you do in front of your screen, be it a TV or PC, Miles can see it.
He watches you like you're the most amazing being he's ever seen.
In a way, he saw you as a God.
An angel.
Something divine.
You're a blessed sight to him compared to the blood that coats these walls.
Miles wants to be closer to you.
He wants to meet you.
At this right he's fallen for you... the Walrider's claws dig deeper into his heart to feed off the feeling.
The issue is... how does he get to you?
If he's patient enough, maybe the Walrider will have an answer.
Maybe the Walrider will guide him to you if he listens to its orders... then he can show you he loves you. His savior.
The Walrider wishes to meet you, too...it just needs to find a way to pass over to your world, eventually.
In the meantime, Miles will wait and fuel his obsession by watching... for now, it will do.

I started writing about Miles' feelings in this one-sided camerashipping AU where he's living with the Parks, but then I decided to explore Waylon's side of things as well, and it turned into something like a fic. So uh. I'll just put it down here?
_______________________________________ Miles feels like… what the fuck even is he anymore? Undead? He's a monster, certainly, and that monstrosity is useful, but he feels like a strange warped, mockery of his former self. There's a power in hosting the Walrider, but it comes at the cost of his humanity and he knows he's frightening to Waylon. He's always told himself he doesn't need anyone else, and bringing down Murkoff is what matters, but now that's what he's been locked into, there are no other options /at all/. It's what he's wanted, isn't it? He does want it. But he's also been through something he can't even begin to process, and being the Walrider's host is deeply violating on even the cellular level. But he's not allowed to process that either, because where does that lead? He can't stop it. He shouldn't even want to stop it. He's always been fine alone, he shouldn't want company now.
But still human or not, trauma is a powerful neurochemical. Waylon is the only other man who's been through the same hell, and he's also risked everything he has to bring down Murkoff. They're aligned in their goals and were both willing to risk everything. And Waylon's still human, he has a family who loves him. Miles isn't jealous, but it also drives home how definitively, unchangeably isolated he is now. He's never really been able to connect even with any of the men he'd dated in the past, simply because they weren't ever 100% politically aligned with him, or he found something about them offputting, they were too superficial, etc. Maybe he was making excuses because life was easier alone, and nobody would care about the world like he does. About the things he fucking gives a shit about, like children in third world countries not dying of dehydration. Too bad fucking Brad wanted to talk forever about the shitty coffee at 7/11 instead.
Miles knows he should be grateful for what he's become. But there's so much he misses, now that he can't have it ever -- and he supposes that at least shows he still has a human mind in some way, weak and stupid and flawed. If he's never wanted it, why does he mourn it now? Why does it feel like every time Waylon is kind to him, that his sanity is teetering on the edge of some awful precipice overlooking some awful abyss, at the bottom of which rests a beast known as resentment and violence?
Maybe he's taking everything he can't have, can no longer have, and projecting it on Waylon as a symbol for it all. But there had been a few moments in hell itself, perhaps in the administration block, when he'd wondered what their lives would be like if they survived this nightmare together. There's things you can't go through without it changing you fundamentally from the ground up, and then whether you want it or not, you're entangled with whoever else went through the meat grinder with you, like quantum states. Waylon has more commitment to setting right what he can of the world than any man Miles had ever been with. But Waylon Park is fucking alive, and Miles Upshur is a rotting corpse of a man held upright by a murderous nanohazard.
And the fucking punchline to the whole shitshow: Waylon Park has a wife, and two kids, and there was something comical in that the first crack in Miles' sense of self would be to latch onto a married man. He can tell Waylon's kindness is strained. And why the fuck wouldn't it be? He has a dead man living in his house, and that dead man is a weapon. You show kindness to the weapon, because you don't know if it'll kill you, or worse, make you feel guilty for indirectly killing what it was in the first place.
Most nights, Miles drinks enough coffee it would give him a heart attack if he still had a working heart, because he doesn't trust himself with REM sleep. _______________________________________
Not everyone goes through hell and brings the devil home.
It's not a kind thought, and Waylon hates it, but there's always a kernel of truth at the core of the operating system. Or something like that. Miles Upshur is great company, and most days, Waylon doesn't even think about the fact he's living with the Parks for their own protection. That feels reductive; Miles is far more than that. If it weren't for Miles, Waylon would have never returned to Lisa's arms, bloodied and broken, but whole. But this isn't just about what Miles has done for him, or what he can do for them. If it weren't for Waylon, Miles would have never ended up in Mount Massive. If it weren't for Waylon, Miles would still have his fingers. He does complain about it so often, always in the tones of gallows humor, but Waylon knows there's a deep hurt behind it.
If it weren't for Waylon, Miles would have never become the host.
But this isn't about gratitude or guilt. Miles is genuinely great to have around; he cooks breakfast sometimes. He walks around singing along badly to Madonna, the B-52's. He gets along great with the kids. He's shit at Mario Kart, but so is Waylon. When he, Waylon, and Lisa work together, compile notes and liaise and network with other anti-Murkoff operatives, Miles is efficient and determined on a level that inspires Waylon. He cracks jokes, he rips people to shreds, and it makes Waylon and Lisa laugh. He makes Waylon type up the reports because it takes him forever, and Waylon does so, guilt heavy in his heart.
But this isn't all about guilt.
Miles encourages him through his rehabilitation, as Waylon slowly gains sensation and stability in his leg. Miles likes shitty beer, and Waylon's learned not to complain too much about it. Sometimes--many sometimes--Miles screams in his sleep. The boys have learned to expect it. There's nothing conventional about their childhood, not anymore.
Waylon has learned not to look at Miles through the night vision of a camera.
When Simon Peacock emails them warnings of potential intruders, Miles stays watch like a guard hound, sipping another one of his shitty Pabst Blue Ribbons. On one of those nights, there are terrible screams, but they're not from Miles.
In his dreams, Waylon hears Lisa screaming, his boys, and finally, himself.
They are mutinous dreams. But more mutinous is the waking thought that Miles sometimes lingers in his presence. He always looks away when Waylon looks, and it makes Waylon wonders if he's accidentally fostering something far worse than a monster. But Waylon knows he has his own trauma to work though; he sees attraction where there is none, and wouldn't it make sense to fear something that already elicits fear in most?
Someone. Not something.
There was the time his eldest had cut his hand playing, and Waylon had been so afraid of what in the air could seep into his blood.
He worries himself sick about Lisa. All those phantom pregnancies.
In the early morning, Miles is painstakingly typing away on his laptop, seated at the breakfast table. The sun's rising, warm golden light streaming in through the windows, and Waylon has no doubt Miles has been up all night; the scent of coffee hangs heavy in the air. Waylon wonders if Miles needs, or even wants, to sleep anymore.
Waylon doesn't know what Miles is, aside from on a purely codified level. He doesn't know what Miles wants, aside from on a purely ideological level.
He pours himself a cup of coffee, and wonders what he's breathing in.

OH MY GOD
I'm currently writing an Outlast fanfic, and this is SUCH A SENSITIVE MOMENT. Just imagine: Waylon and Miles have a heart-to-heart talk, sort things out and stuff like that AND THEN WALRIDER JUST APPEARS AND SAYS: “oh god just tell that you love each other🤨 why is there all this drama🙄”
I CAN’T BREATHE BECAUSE OF LAUGHING HELP...
If I won’t finish this fanfic, you know, I’m probably dead. BECAUSE OF WALRIDER...

I would like to request a Valentine Letter with Miles Upshur !
The first one is I remember watching him on React Teen Gaming Outlast Video as a kid and now I've grown up, I got my Outlast Phase back after 9-10 years 4 months ago
The second one is I loved his Outfit and his Walrider Form and Powers cuz It fits him so that's why
And the last one is he's my fav character and childhood hero for all time
That's all ! and my name is Jessa btw <33
Tumblr media
“ Hello sweet Jessa,
I saw and heard everything you think about me, and it brings me joy that you have seen me as a hero since you were a kid. I may not be able to see you right now, but I will find a time to visit you someday. I have lost my life for the sake of other people, and I don't know if it’s something I would or wouldn't regret, but I think you were right about me being a hero. A little pride wouldn't hurt, don’t you think? My neighborhood was scared of meeting me days ago so I hid myself with this…Walrider thing. Murkoff tried to kill us but I managed to survive, and it seems we have a bunch of ants as our ally now. Have you ever wondered how does it feel to fly? Because your hero can fly now, heh. I can take you for a fun trip, then let’s have some ice cream together. This Walrider seems to like sweet things, surprisingly. I’ll see you soon, Jess.
Your hero, Miles Upshur.”
