He gets nightmares on the way to the Starscraper.

Callum won't say so, but Rayla knows. She's taken to always waiting at night to hear his soft adorable little snores before she lets herself drift off, too, and with every night that passes since they've left the castle, it takes longer and longer for him to fall asleep. He wakes up close to noon with bags under his eyes, blankets tangled up along legs from thrashing in the night.

The first time she wakes him up, he whimpers and pushes her away, and won't—for the first time—accept her comfort. It hurts more than any cold shoulder ever did upon her return.

The second time, his eyes are wild, staring like they don't recognize her at first. Then the terror fades, warmth amid the clammy quality to his skin seeping back into his eyes, even if he still shies away from her touch and twice as much from her words.

"It's nothing you can help with," he mumbles regarding the hell in his head.

Her heart squeezes painfully. Something she can't protect him from.

Maybe that's why he never lets her comfort him back to sleep, lie with him on the mattress, nor hold his hand to ward off the monsters that hurt him so. He doesn't want her close, and she can't understand why, but... Rayla is the last person to question wanting space or to demand closeness.

She doesn't tell him that she lies awake on her mattress after each terror, watching over him while he sleeps, because that's something she can do.

It's their last night in the creaking boat before they reach the shoreline. Before it will just be a long, snowy trek to the Starscraper.

Tonight, when he thrashes, she shakes him away as her name escapes her lips, his desperate cry twisting her heart painfully, and when his eyes fly open, they look at her with only teary-eyed relief. "Rayla—"

"It's okay." She kneels by the side of the bed, taking his face in her hands. Brushing away his tears best she can. "We're okay."

His breathing slowly calms, helped by a few small sky incantations, before he removes her hands from his cheeks and they fall to her sides again. She wants to hold him. She wants to help him. But if he—

"Do you want to talk about it?" she offers, even as she has her suspicions: Aaravos, a puppetmaster. And whatever Finnegrin had done to him on that cursed ship. Not for the first time, she wishes she could kill Aaravos herself, just to put him at ease; that Finnegrin being in the belly of a sea leviathan was enough to calm the roiling storms in her best friend's mind.

He shakes his head. "No."

She straightens, pursing her lips, turning to leave—because ever since coming back, she still can't quite stay, because the world is still in danger, and because it will take more time for the distance he's enforced to dwindle and that's fine, really, it is—

He snags her wrist. "Wait," Callum croaks, and Rayla turns back around. Waiting. Watching. His thumb strokes over the place her binding used to rest. "Don't leave."

She inhales sharply,

Believe me, I want to go down there with you... You've got to stay with me... Really, that's it, just — goodbye? You're going to stay here and die out of... But would it be alright, maybe, if I stay?

He's never asked before. Not like this.

She steps closer. "Callum—"

"I want you to stay," he states, looking up at her. A beat. "Please."

Rayla crawls into the bed beside him and wraps him up in her arms. He settles, forehead pressed to her neck—faintly listening to her heart, she thinks, as she holds him tight.

If he wants her to... if he wants her, then—

Rayla kisses his forehead. "I'll never leave again," she promises.

She'll keep it this time.

The first thing Callum feels when the world comes back is pain.

Blinding pain.

His body quivers and jerks, and he cries out as every muscle constricts in agonising cramp.

“Shush, Callum...”

Soft hands across his brow, soothing his tight, painful muscles with a gentle caress.

“Rayla?” His voice quivers and shakes as he forces his eyes open. Or rather, eye open. One of them seems swollen shut.

The world beyond her face is dark and blurry, but he figures out she’s sitting cross-legged, his head cradled in her lap.

“Hi.” She smiles shakily at him, her hands still gentle on his face. She’s pale and tired looking, eyes red and glassy.

“What happened?” He croaks, trying to look around, but his vision swims... confusing shafts of light against deep shadow. The continuing pitch and roll of the ship. A persistent smell of mould and damp.

“I don’t know.” She swallows, her voice tight. “I woke up in here with you.”

“Where are we?” He closes his eyes against the rising nausea.

“The brig.” She sighs, and it is only then he becomes aware of the heavy biting shackles on his wrists and ankles.

“They hurt you.” He opens his eyes again, blurry vision just able to make out the trail of dried blood snaking it’s way around her neck and down her throat.

“I’m fine, Callum.” Her fingers smooth his brow as she smiles softly at him. “You’re the one who was struck by lightning.”

Frowning, he reaches for her, wanting somehow to wipe away the blood, but the shackles pull at his wrist, and he doesn’t have the strength to fight against them.

“Rest, Callum.” She takes his hand in hers, squeezing his fingers as she lays them both gently on his chest.

“We have to get out of here.” He pushes himself up, but his muscles won’t obey him, and he crashes into her, gasping in pain.

“Callum!” Rayla grabs him by the shoulders, their chains echoing loudly.

“So, he’s alive then?”  

Rayla turns to face Nyx, shielding Callum with her body. “What do you want?”

“Not as scary as usual, love bug number one.” Nyx smirks at them through the bars. “Maybe if you both didn’t look like you were about to puke.”

“You double crossed us.” Callum tries to glare at her, but he can barely remain upright, which Rayla clearly spots. Attention no longer on Nyx, she encourages him to lean into her, any other position too awkward around their shackled wrists.

“As much as I like you guys, I’m not exactly willing to get myself killed for you.” She frowns at them, then glances over her shoulder. “You need to rest. You’ll need to be in better shape than this if you want to make a run for it.” Her voice is lowered, barely audible over the creaking ship.

“What are you talking about?” Rayla still sounds annoyed at Nyx, but Callum can detect the faint hint of hope in her voice.

“Just be ready.” She steps away from the bars once again. “Or as ready as you can be.”

They hear a door open and close, and then they’re alone again.

“Think we can trust her?” Rayla sighs, shifting a little so she can look at him.

“I’m not sure we have a choice.” His eyes fall to the dried blood on her neck, and he reaches out to touch the back of her head, wishing he could do something about the cut that caused it.

Despite their dire circumstances, Rayla blushes a little, leaning forward to rest her head against his. “You should rest.”

Her breath tickles his cheek, and he wants to protest, but he’s so tired, even from this small exertion. Rayla looks like she’s about to fall over too though. “We both should.”

“I’ll keep watch.” She encourages him to lay down, leaning back against the wall as she does so.

“Rest, Rayla.” He reclines in her lap again, fingers seeking hers. “What else can they do to us?”

“I’m watching you, dummy.” She smiles softly, squeezing his fingers with one hand while the other begins to brush the hair back from his forehead. “Just struck by lightning? Remember?”

“No.” He attempts to smirk at her, and from the genuine smile on her face, it seems he makes a passable attempt.

“Well, thanks for proving my point.” She raises an eyebrow, ruffling his hair a fraction.

Callum smiles at her, raising their joined hands and pressing his lips to her fingers. She takes a shaky breath, biting her lip as she tries to blink back tears.

Unsuccessfully.

One lands on his cheek, warm and wet.

The illusion of cool, controlled Rayla is cracking. Breaking.

Bending over, Rayla kisses the spot where it lands. He lifts his other hand and wraps it around her shoulder as much as the awkward position allows.

It’s hardly comfortable for either of them. The brig is cold and wet and smells foul. They’re both hurt, tired, and hungry. He wants to kiss her properly, but she seems to be crying more now, and so he holds her instead.

She might be watching over him, but he’s going to watch over her, too.

Just heavy-handed Christian ideology in a series that wants to purport a kind of cross-cultural paganistic worldview

Honestly I don't think 'worldwide mastermind' is a plot concept without merit but it's so boring in this series because they simply do not seem interested in giving him real depth while placing him on the side of the oppressed-but-not-really humans, reinforcing how much the humans are in the wrong, so absolutely nobody benefits from this writing decision

This season took so long to come out because they were reading the arguments from us 5 people who call them out on writing a weirdly pro-imperialism series and then had to stick in a bunch of strawman scenes to be like "Oh you think this but really it's unfair" and then realized they couldn't think of actual counterarguments and eventually had to admit defeat and just have characters they like go "NUH-UH!!" in response

Fans of the show want to say it's 'nuanced' and 'showing both sides' but that doesn't hold water because A) every person that expresses any kind of doubts or cynicism about the status quo is a villain in this series and B) Unless they plan on Uno reversing their whole lore (wouldn't put it past them) these things DID HAPPEN and if Xadians were meant to be meeting humans halfway, there would seriously be a real discussion about allowing humans a place in Xadia and other shit that simply never comes up

Will Zubeia apologize? No! She just compliments the good humans for dancing to her tune. It's simply so one-sided.

Anyways points for Rayla dumping Callum on his birthday LMAO. It seems a bit thoughtless of her but I can't deny the comedy. 👍

My unorganized thoughts after finishing The Dragon Prince season 5

Finished binging the season!!! I loved it. It dragged in places and that stupid fucking lemur thing is still the bane of my existence but I loved the character development and plot beats! I also loved seeing more of Terry. He has something deeply wrong with him <3. Also liked Viren completing his redemption arc, though I would have preferred the resurrection spell actually require Claudia to sacrifice herself or at least like sacrifice a limb or something to truly complete Viren's arc. He has no attachment to that fuckin homunculus thing, and his reasoning for not killing it being that "Dark magic led Claudia down a dangerous path, I'm not doing any more dark magic" is a little weak. I do appreciate that the way they did it gave us a whole scene of Aaravos talking about "our child" with Viren, peak evil gay, but it did a disservice to Viren's redemption arc. I get that it was kinda the only way, since Aaravos knows Viren would never hurt one of his actual kids at this point in his arc, but still. I also am really interested in how Zubeia being corrupted goes, how Claudia losing her leg goes, and what's up with that magic pearl. Is that really Aaravos's prison? Or is that the key to his prison? Loved Callum struggling with what he's willing to do under pressure to save those he loves, and how that's contrasted with Claudia, who's kind of a dark mirror for who he could become if he can't learn to let go of those he loves. Loved the reveal that he used dark magic to save Rayla in the Sea Legs episode. Also just really liked Finnegrin, he's a great character and I love his design. Love a ruthless evil pirate who wants revenge on the Archdragon of the Ocean for killing his beloved hermit crab, who keeps pet hermit crabs all over his office, and who has a neckline low enough to kill god. I also love Elmer! What the fuck is his deal though. Are there just plant trolls in Xadia now? Not opposed, just wanna know.

I also really loved Soren this season! I like how his kindness and unwavering faith in others is his greatest strength. Very sweet. That man is the One True Himbo. Dumb, strong, and most importantly, kind. Fucking LOVED seeing Tidebound elves this season. I've wanted to see ocean elves since season one! Fuck yeah! Janai and Amaya are so cute together. Same with Terry and Claudia, love a good fucked up couple. He's just like "I can fix her" and she's just like "No you can't but you CAN join me in my insanity." Callum and Rayla go back and forth for me; sometimes they're really sweet, but sometimes they seem almost forced and I'm just like... can't they be BFFs? Or in a QPR? I feel like it would fit better than a romance TBH. I also love how Villads was 1000% willing to get his hand chopped off for a few kids he met once three years ago. My kind of dude. Fuck that General lady, also. Like, how is Karim worth betraying your entire people and possibly ruining the future of your whole society?? Does he kiss you on the forehead sometimes? Please get better judgment you are literally a judge on the High Court. Also what is up with the Sunfire high priest? He's clearly hiding what's most likely a corrupted wound but why? And why side with Karim? I loved Kim'dael. Love an emo vampire lady with sapphic energy who could kill a man with her fingernails (literally). I like how she isn't strictly evil and has a clear goal that she acts toward with logic. She wants to be freed from her mercy debt so she can drink the blood of anyone she wants, and she acts with logic toward that goal. I still CANNOT wait for them to finally free Runaan from the coin. Honestly Rayla's parents come second for me because we just don't know them as people. But like. I wanna see the cut to Ethari standing over the pool and seeing Runaan's life lily rise to the surface again. I will cry and that is a promise.

Also, that bit where Janai has a nightmare where Aaravos tells her that her great-grandmother's fate was that Aaravos "swallowed her"??? Why are half the lines out of Aaravos's mouth innuendos. Is it the VA's voice? Does it just compel people to write his characters like that? Or is Aaravos just Like That as a person.

I mean like. Aarvos also flirts needlessly with Viren every chance he gets. Not even for manipulation because Viren is not into him, he's just incapable of not acting like that. Viren is definitely gay though. Like definitely. Even my cishet brother could tell in that scene where Viren is having a dark magic-induced fever dream about Harrow. Like oh you *liked him* liked him. Sure had a funny way of showing it, Mr. Kill The Princes. Anyway. Yeah that's my thoughts on The Dragon Prince season 5! Cannot wait for seasons six and seven, I'm sure they will be so cool.

a whole load of headcanons i wrote out just after s4 came out (though my thoughts are largely still the same now so not much has changed really) that have to do with ruthari:

Callum will have to use dark magic to free him from the coin, and will be reluctant to do so, but if Rayllum is back on track by that point he will probably agree to do it for Rayla even if he knows what Runaan has done

When he gets out, he’ll probably be very disoriented and have no clue where he is or what’s going on. I like the idea that getting coined has left him physically weak, so he needs time to recover.

On top of that, I think his mission will be the last thing on his mind at that point.

Different theories are going around – will the dragang take the coins back to the silvergrove, or will they free the coins elsewhere?

If they take the coins back to the silvergrove, and Ethari helps them out, I imagine he won’t leave Runaan’s side even for a minute. Cue every soft and angsty interaction you can possibly think of.

Ethari can barely believe that he’s got Runaan back after all this time. He cries when they kiss for the first time after being reunited.

Let’s say Zym is there and manages to get the binding off. Runaan doesn’t have much choice in the matter, but that can wait for a later time when he’s not half dead. Even then, his arm is permanently damaged, and he’ll likely never regain full use of it.

Runaan has trouble sleeping, since he keeps flashing back to the moment he got coined, and how painful it was, both physically and emotionally. After a few nights, even though he’s still weak, he asks Ethari to stay with him.

This whole time, the one thing Ethari has ached for more than anything is to hold Runaan again. To hear his voice. To know he’s there and he’s alive. And now that he is, he can’t quite believe it’s real.

Once he regains more strength, Runaan is faced with difficult questions. What will he do with his life now that he’s crippled? Obviously Zubeia will have called him off killing Ezran at this point so that isn’t an issue. More the problem is with Callum, who likely had a great personal cost to bring him back. He’s… indebted to Callum, who saved him despite him being the one who killed his dad. This wouldn’t be the first time he’s questioned his path in life, and I really think it will rock his worldview significantly. I don’t know if I can see him retiring to settle down for a quiet life with Ethari just yet, but no doubt it’s on his mind. Ethari did lose him for two years, after all.

As for Rayla, well… there sure are things to talk out. The advantage is that she knows him and how he thinks and operates. And with the whole Callum thing, knowing how desperately she wanted him back that Callum was willing to do that for her… also given how she helped Xadia and knowing the truth about her parents, he would probably argue strongly in favour of unghosting her. I do think, given their history, that they would be able to forgive each other eventually, and that it would make a nice parallel to her and Callum.

Aside from all that, he has to take some time to just get used to living again. To being with Ethari again. To sitting out on the front porch, drinking tea together every morning. Adjusting to life with a permanent injury.

absolutely no clue how many of these will come true and if they do how many we'll actually see, but a gay disaster can dream, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

"You are a guy.", her lips curled into a soft smile, "It's expected…"

"What was that supposed to mean?", Callum asked, but he received an answer when Rayla turnedon the spot, pushed him back onto the bed and straddled him,almost as if she really was an assassin, ready to kill him.

"There would be libraries filled with books about stuff men never manage to realise about women…"

Her voice lowered,as she placed her hands on the hem of her shirt, and with one swift move, she lifted it over her head, revealing her bindings, already loosening that hid her breasts.

OKAY. so i dont really do these kinda posts but id like to say a few things about season 4 cus ive seen some things and the fandom making theories, i just like to write about my own thoughts. ive watched s4 only one time due to not having netflix so i dont really remember many scenes.

"rayla's acting weird" this is what frustrats me the most. NO she's not... ok maybe a little. but like. come the fuck on, she was gone for 2 years. ofc she's not the same person we saw in season 3. people change. plus, personally, i dont see any difference on her except this one time when callum asked her to...kill him. yes rayla acted a lot calm in that scene- not just that scene really. she was so calm most of the time, but i can see why? she's trying to get callum warm up to her, she's giving him space, she's being gentle as much as she can cus she knows how much she hurt him. she's grown up, she's not the same hot-headed, irritated elf anymore. and we all know how she hides her feelings. Im pretty sure she's gotten used to it, or managed to cope her feelings well so that she can stay calm. lastly about rayla, all i have to say is people change, so does rayla. and no she's not fake at all.

firstly, if rayla's acting weird, what about Viren being supportive with Terry? isnt that weirder? he didnt even treat his own son better, but he's supporting a trans fella? sus.... secondly, what about opeli being so chill about Ez going with Zubia. in that case most of the characters in s4 were out of character. and that's okay cus it's been 2 fucking years!

personally i think the "Zubia in Katolis" scene was a bit rushed. they couldve done it better but Im not saying it was bad at all tho! i loved the scene with the whole callum doing magic thing and the dragon sized jelly tart? xD

"why is rayla back?" why not really. she realized it was useless to find viren and came back home? she realized she wanted to see her mage? "we had something so special. but I became so obsessed with revenge, i.. risked losing the best thing ive ever had... you" she CLEARLY missed him yall. ofc she came back.

"where's the rayllum kiss" Im glad we didnt get a rayllum kiss. I know this is a cartoon show but at least the animators made it similar to how an in-real-life relationship works. people dont just go "you were gone for two years but its okay, i forgive you, lets kiss". Callum needs time to get used to being around rayla again. he's happy but also angry, he needs to see how hard rayla's trying to win callum's trust back. it was so clear that callum got a bit comfortable with rayla again in the last few episodes, especially the last one. That hug was enough sign for us to know they're gonna be okay and that they're still deeply in love.

claudia was a bit- no fuck it- she was too much this season. especially in that scene where she tricked rayla with pebbles. god that hurt so much.

Lastly, Season 4 was amazing!! i loved season 4, and all the new things we saw. the arc is building up, it's so interesting, im so excited for season 5.

Shipping Super-post: Why Sorayla is a great ship

Time to talk about a ship that is special to me and needs more discussion. Before I get into it, I'm not trying to make anyone ship Sorayla. And before you think me a heathen, understand that Rayllum is my OTP. Just browse my Tumblr account if you need proof. But I am a multishipper and I think this little ship needs more love and attention. It DOES NOT mean I don't want Rayllum to stay together. I do. So here we go. Here's some reasons why Sorayla makes a great couple:

1. They're jock bros. Soren and Rayla are both physical fighters, using blades as their weapons of choice. They are both athletic and like to show it off. This is seen with Rayla showing off her acrobatics to the Dragang and Soren being proud of his bod. It's one of the many things that make them birds of a feather, and means they could totally spar and work out together as a couple. Also... They do spar! Rayla clearly enjoys facing him.

2. They have fun chemistry. Rayla and Soren have a lot of fun banter. Despite her annoyance with him early on, Rayla indulges Soren more than other opponents. While they get only her disgruntled scowls, Rayla exchanges jabs with Soren and is, generally, more playful around him. Even if they're both meatheads, Rayla is the more grounded of the two with her often playing the straight man to his funny man. It's pure bromance mixed with some potential for enemies to lovers.

3. They both want to impress their father but turned on him to do the right thing. One of the most compelling parts of a good pairing is shared experiences (often trauma). And these two both have daddy issues galore. They crave the approval of their father or father figure. Rayla wants Runaan to not hate her and to prove herself as an assassin. Soren wants his father to see him as capable and worthy. But Soren and Rayla have good hearts that override this desire. They choose to do what's right and so they both defy and fight their own fathers. Rayla and Soren are heroes with strong moral compasses. Also fun fact: They both tried to kill Viren to save someone.

4. Rayla really cares about Soren. Much of the fandom views Rayla as seeing Soren as a nuisance and she certainly expresses that a few times. However we also see Rayla has come to respect Soren by Season 3. And in Season 4, Rayla spends most of the season worrying about his well being, and is overjoyed that he's alive to the point she looks ready to kiss him when she finds him alive (see the header image).

5. Canon scenes that make them shippable:

Soren and Rayla bonding over not wanting Callum & Claudia to flirt. I feel like this was a bit of intentional shiptease by the writers (double juicy as Rayla may have been crushing on Callum as well).

Building on my pervious post about the meanings of the arcanums I love that tdp chose the specific arcanums to represent each season not only based on the types of magic the characters encounter but also based on the thematic developments.

Book 1: Moon is about death and about characters seeing past the illusions and lies they believed in. Harrows assassination is the foundation of the plotline and throughout the season the other characters have to unlearn and relearn because of the assumptions they held. From Rayla realizing that vengeance is not the answer, Callum realizing he can trust Rayla, to them all seeing past their assumptions of what is normal and okay in the world, Season 1 is all about lies and illusions. Some of that does carry over into season 2 but the establishment of the idea that all is not as it seems is fundamental to season 1.

Book 2: Sky is about love and trust. It is about Callum and Rayla coming to fully trust each other and love each other (because even if their romance comes in season 3, season 2 is where the deep platonic love and trust gets fully established). It is also where Callum and Claudia declare their love for Rayla and Soren respectively by pushing beyond the boundaries of what they are supposed to do in order to save the ones they love (Fire and Fury). Callum also connects with his parents through Harrows letter and his dream and it is in those connections to and acceptances of love that he understands the world better and is able to connect with the sky arcanum.

Book 3: Sun is about passion. Fire is the arcanum most connected to battle and conflict so it makes sense for this season with the big final conflict to be the associated with the sun. Beyond the main conflict this season is about relationships forged in the heat of battle and bold declarations. Callum jumps off a cliff, Soren tries to kill his dad, Ezran gives up his crown, Rayla kisses Callum. Where in the previous seasons more of the decisions were based on steadier and more constant feelings and beliefs, season 3 is about strong feelings, strong ideas, passion and anger.

Book 4: Earth is about life and growth. It is about Claudia bringing back to life her dad and them having to reckon with their understanding of the worth of life. It is about Callum and Rayla slowly rebuilding a relationship, growing into is as steadily as a plant grows. It is about the taking of life and the saving of it and the shaking of steady foundations.

This also gives us clues as to what the last 3 seasons could look like.

Book 5: is probably Ocean. It is probably going to be a season of transformation, in the world, in character dynamics, in beliefs and relationships. Season 4 shook foundations and created some of the chaos through which change and transformation can occur in Season 5. By making season 5 about change, it also allows the creators to set up the stage for the final arch of major conflict in season 6 and 7 where the world will have to face a complete reckoning and far greater conflict than season 4 or 5 will provide.

Book 6: is probably Stars. It is probably going to be a season focused on destiny. Bits and peices of this theme have come through in the previous seasons but with Aaravos probably out of his prison by this point, or at least holding much greater power, Callum is going to have to resist his influence and grab a hold of his own destiny. Rayla will also probably have to face her own perception of her destiny as a protector and a self sacrificial hero (hopefully because decoining her parents will force her to rethink her identity). And this will hopefully be the season where Claudia starts considering a redemption arch as she questions her destiny and purpose in life for the first time.

Book 7: I hope will be Dark Magic. Because the final conflict will probably have a motif of dark vs light but also because the ultimate question will be what we want the world to look like. It will push all the characters to the limits of their morality and force them to decide what they care about the most. They are going to have to reckon with why dark magic really exists and how a world after conflict can look such that peoples needs and desires are met.

- rayllum reunion felt very anti-climactic

- cute tiny moments throughout the season between rayla and callum but no real talk ? i know its bc this season is one of set-up but it felt lacking on that front to me

- soren /chef's kiss/. love him, love his character and how much he has grown and i felt like crying for him when he confronted claudia/saw his dad alive.

- ezran being fantastic as well, playing peacemaker between rayllum like a child of divorced parents and also trying his best to bring lasting peace to his kingdom. i demand he be wrapped in a blanket and brought a thousand jelly tarts.

- loved seeing claudia fall further down the dark path being opposed to viren actually seeming to begin to realize aaravos was playing him ? that maybe all he should want now is some nice 30 days of life left to spend with the people he loves ?

- terry ? good but not as dark as i thought sadly. i was on board with him being actually twisted but then they made him someone who just thought claudia was right in doing what she does. that scene where he tells her tricking rayla was cruel ? i laughed wondering where he had been all this time while claudia brought her father back to life.

- i do not trust any small animal mascot that has cutesy eyes. stella i'm watching u. was wary of that thing from the moment stella went for the cube in the reunion.

- also i was actually wary of rayla for a good part of the season bc i felt she acted strangely and thought she might have been a fake. apparently not, but then it means she really was just strange. but i love her. baby. precious. i really wanna know what happened while she was gone to make her abandon a dragon in need now (and also soren). that last scene with the coins ? beautiful. every season has a rayla breakdown, as it should.

- i really wanted an angry callum, i did get it and it was nice. what i wasn't expecting and what i didn't really enjoy was him just acting...cold ? to rayla ? like outright ghosting her. i just wanted a confrontation but again, its more of a setup season and character and plot got sacrificed.

- callum vs aaravos is gearing up to be very good though. loved the lord of the rings moment where callum tried to drop the key of aaravos in the lava but failed. loved how he asked rayla to kill him bc he doesn't want to hurt his loved ones. it's totally gonna happen and i'm here for that angst.

- rayllum hug. callum breaking down holding one of her blades. rayla having come back this time. i still wish the bad cycle of self-sacrificing would be broken but we'll get to it.

I want more of Claudia’s corruption arc going the way of “I would burn down the world for my boyfriend and father and kill everyone else,” like, I love it

And the way Viren is sort of regretting all of his decisions, but buddy it’s too late, you already manipulated your daughter her entire life into become the scary powerful mage she is and now you have to deal with the consequences

I, like Claudia, would kill for Terry

I LOVE the friendship dynamic between Ez and the dragon queen, like how he’s all small and polite and diplomatic and she’s like, “I will destroy your entire world,” but also has a soft spot for him and Soren

Also I’m loving learning about Aaravos’s backstory and the way he’s connected to both Claudia and Callum, highlighting the similarities in their characters

And finally, I’m praying Rayla finds a way to get her dads back because the HOPE I got when I saw those coins like omg

One eye is black, bleeding around the rim, soot and scarlet mixed with tears, his other eye wide open and white, the darkness receding as it grows brighter, his green eye pained. “Rayla, please—”

He’s on his knees, Aaravos’ laughter echoing in their ears, and Rayla panics. Ezran isn’t here, spirited away by Soren after Callum had nearly killed all three of them, limbs controlled by a dark puppetmaster. Part of her hair is singed from a dangerously close fulminus, and she knows what he’s asking for.

If bad things happen, I need you to kill me.

But how can she?

“I know you’re in there,” she says, using her remaining blade to fend off a lightning attack as he staggers to his feet, shifting and unnatural. “Fight him off, Callum, you can do this!”

Aaravos’ voice leaks out of his lips. “Don’t you know humans have always been weak? That’s why they needed dark magic in the first place. He wasn’t strong enough to take the power for himself. Only to save you.”

“Callum, please!” she says, dodging a swing of his staff this time. She grabs his wrists, holds him hard, her feet sliding back against the floor. “I know you can do this. No one can make your choices for you—”

Callum and Aaravos’ voices collide, marring each other as his green eye flickers back in. “BUT YOU DID!” Callum falls to his knees, gasping for breath, a hand around his throat as his voice clears, heavy with tears and ragged breaths. “You left me. You—you killed a part of me.”

Aaravos’ voice takes over a moment later, cold and cruel. “Now you can’t even finish the job, when it was your fault I was able to sink my teeth into him. Made him doubt he could control his own destiny.”

“Rayla, please,” Callum gasps, white light encroaching over his green eye. “Please, kill me—” His eyes roll back in his head, Aaravos’ voice like slime filling up her veins. “Tell me, is just one puny human’s life worth the world to you? — Rayla, PLEASE—”

She’s never seen him be in so much pain before. Her jaw sets. Her heart hardens.

She twirls her blade, gets in close—dropping it as Rayla takes his face in her hands and kisses him, hard and firm, a feinting fault-line running through her heart. She’s pictured their first kiss after leaving him a thousand times, but never thought it’d be like this. 

Callum stiffens, then melts as they pull apart quickly. His eyes are fully green when he gazes back at her, both of them grinning relief, before his eyes flash a blinding white just for a second and—

Something sharp and hot slides shallowly between her ribs, still deep to hurt like nothing else, like an iron protruding on her heart. Rayla staggers back as Callum lets go of her twisted sword now embedded in her chest, horrified, and she keels sideways, black crowding her vision.

“Rayla,” he gasps, dropping to his knees and cradling her, his hands and voice shaking with fear and rage.

The connection’s been severed, but at what cost?

She wants to say it’s okay, but can’t make her voice work, blood beginning to seep through her tunic. She clutches at his arm. 

“You want to save her, little mage?” Aaravos croons, still echoing around them. “Then you’ll do as I tell you.”

My personal headcannon for a Rayllum reconciliation scene

This is just something that popped into my head late at night when I was thinking about Rayllum in Season 4 of TDP. Basically, it's my version of Rayllum becoming a couple again! They're too adorable to be angry at each other!!I accept constructive criticism. Enjoy! #TheDragonPrince

She saw him on the balcony, the sunset illuminating him with soft hues of orange and red. Callum stood before an easel, a palette of paints in one hand, a brush gliding across the canvas in his other. Just looking at him sent pangs of regret and sorrow through her heart like twin daggers. Rayla knew how much she'd hurt Callum when she left and she'd hated herself for doing so every day. The worst part was that it hadn't been worth it. She failed to find Viren, her parents or Runaan. The only thing she'd gained was regret. But Rayla knew avoiding Callum wasn't going to repair the shattered bond between them. Taking a deep breath to calm her jittery nerves, Rayla slowly walked towards him, her legs shaky and unstable. She hadn't felt this anxious about anything in years.

Callum's head turned slightly to glance at her before returning to his work. Edging closer, Rayla realised he was painting Zubeia, which brought back a painful memory. When the Dragon Queen awoke, they both stood together, hands interlocked, proof that humans and elves could get along peacefully. She recalled the burst of love and pride in her heart, a feeling long lost.

"It's a beautiful painting," Rayla complimented, trying to start a conversation.

"Thanks." Callum replied stiffly, his back still facing her. "What do you want Rayla?"

"To talk to you. To apologise for what I did."

Callum scoffed, lowering his paintbrush. "And you decided to wait two years to do so?"

"I tried to write to you Callum, I really did. But I never knew what to say or how to phrase things."

"You could've said anything! Two whole years with no contact and you'd gone hunting for an extremely dangerous dark mage!" Callum raged, throwing down his palette and brush. "I thought you were dead, Rayla! I waited for months for a single letter, anything that would confirm you were still alive!"

Silence blanketed the pair, both in shock after Callum's outburst. Guilt flooded Rayla, almost choking her, and stinging tears formed in her eyes.

"You have every right to be angry at me. I deserve it. I know there's no way for me to take back the pain I've caused us both and the time we've lost. I'm so sorry for not writing, I just didn't know if you'd even read anything from me," Rivulets of tears were now flowing down her cheeks. Tentatively, she grasped one of Callum's hands and placed it over her heart. "Every beat it takes is for you. You're my heart, Callum, I can't live without you. I left alone because the thought of losing you was too much. I'd never forgive myself if I allowed you to come with me and you got hurt or...or worse. And then I'd have to tell Ezran that.."

Sobs racked her body; Callum's furious expression melted like ice in the sun and he wrapped his remaining arm around her waist, pulling her to him and touching his forehead with hers.

"I'm not entirely defenceless you know," he whispered.

"I know. I was just scared of that scenario becoming a reality. You've done so much for me. You learned to trust me after I tried to kill you and your brother, overcame your prejudices about elves and saved my life dozens of times. You jumped off the pinnacle of the Storm Spire, relying on a spell that you hadn't mastered, for me. Losing you, Callum, it would kill me. Besides, Ezran needed you more than I did, with ruling a kingdom and all."

Callum sighed deeply and averted his eyes.

"I love you, Callum. I hope one day, I'll earn your trust, your forgiveness, and maybe your love." Letting his hand go, Rayla started to unwind the arm around her waist, but Callum held her tighter and met her gaze.

"I understand now. I love you too," Smiling, Callum gently kissed her forehead. "I forgive you Rayla."

Happiness and relief exploded inside her and a grin spread across her face. Her hands rose and clasped around his neck. "That's not how this works. You're supposed to still be angry at me!"

Laughing, Callum wrapped his second hand around her. "I've been angry for two years Rayla. I was still mad when you arrived, but I was mostly relieved when you walked through those doors, relieved that you were unscathed and alive. Avoiding you was so difficult as I just wanted to hold you and make sure you were real. I'm done with being angry at you. All I want to feel about you now is love."

The crushing weight vanished from her mind and Rayla leaned towards Callum and kissed him. They'd kissed before, but this one felt unique, better than their previous ones. To Rayla, it felt like a promise.

A promise of an undying love.

When he's like, 13, he wakes up in the middle of the night letting his thoughts wander and stays remembering what people have said and he realized they were just being nice but he gets really sad about it because he feels like they were just straight up lying to his face (which technically they were)

I’m happy to see aro rep but I think I’ll headcanon Myuna to be bi if that’s ok. I hope she ends up with Chen though. I’m a sucker for romance.

I stopped watching the dragon prince after season 4 cause I disliked season 4 so much. I’m afraid of picking up season 5. I loved the first 3 seasons though especially season 3 had lots of rayllum scenes.

Honestly I’m tempted to rewatch the whole thing just to get to the pirate arc. I remember loving Callum and Rayla as a couple in season 3 but again season 4 really wasn’t my cup of tea.

I think she can definitely be a bi oriented aroace (I don't think the gender of her partners would matter to her) so why not both? I'm pan and ace and aro spec myself!

Honestly I loved S4 but that's because I liked what it did with stuff theme / character wise (i.e. love isn't always good and you will do awful things for the people you love), and I always expected Callum and Rayla to begin to have to jump the hurdle of "Rayla's trauma makes her hyperindependent and that's detrimental to her core relationships" so I like that we're finally getting to it cause I'd been waiting for it since like s2. It's not the happiest part of their arc by far but it's absolutely something they've always needed to address. (I also like filler and I think S4 was a great season for Ezran). I know most people (even ones who didn't like S4) LOVE s5 and have it as their favourite or 2nd favourite season (usually with s2 or s3 as their other fave); it's my second favourite as well after s3 and S5 has my favourite Rayllum scenes / development by far.

These are just some of my fave moments from the first two episodes and I don't want to give away more spoilers but like. S5 is so freaking good on like all counts but particularly for these two, and I cannot wait to see where everything goes - it does a great job at offering pay off for S4, developing its own thing, and steering things ahead for S6. Also has some of the most interesting imagery / development for the show thus far in terms of dreams/nightmares, and Kim'Dael is a treat all on her own as an antagonist in the Sunfire elf plot line

Some of my best stuff on AO3 is also just post S4 if you're interested like "older but just never wiser" and "this fall just might kill me" both of which ended up being predictive of S5 in some ways, which is just chef's kiss
