Gintama x Trigun 

This post is obviously not intended as a direct comparison of characters, but rather on character design and how much Trigun influenced my later love for Gintama. I became a fan of Trigun in 2003 when the manga first came to North America, and I later watched the original anime series. Three years later, I became a fan of Gintama, and even then I noticed the similarities and how much I gravitated toward the same types of characters and designs. Sakamoto and Vash wear red coats, wield guns, and are generally eccentric; Hijikata and Wolfwood dress in black and smoke cigarettes; and Takasugi and Legato share similar hairstyles and function as antagonists. 

I love both of these series so much, and I’m happy to see new Trigun fans experiencing the series for the first time through 2023′s Trigun Stampede. Likewise, I’m also happy if people become fans of Gintama, as well. Both are great series! For those that adore both as I do, this post is more a celebration of the two series and a few of their iconic characters.

"Where are the controls?" Great question! They're sold as separate detached consoles, which is universally acknowledged to be a terrible idea. Hoverchair users almost always attach them to their chairs somehow.

I don't think I've mentioned this at all since moving to this blog a while back, but Jaspern was actually a serious alcoholic for a long time when JJ was younger. That's because, when JJ was only a few years old, Kalliah, JJ's mother and Jaspern's wife (and soulmate), passed away from sickness.

Jas was devastated by the loss, and honestly didn't really have much of a clue how to raise JJ on his own. Especially since JJ had a few periods in which he was a fairly difficult kid to work with (For Jas, anyway). For example, JJ was an extremely anxious and sensitive kid, and Jas has always been a little...out of touch with his emotions. He's always been a very straightforward person. So not knowing why JJ was feeling the way he was, and not really being able to relate (not for lack of experience I feel, but more lack of recognition at what JJ was feeling), or how to "fix" whatever was making JJ hurt or afraid or anxious was hard for him.

That, coupled with losing his wife, on top of a pile of other things made him drink more and more over the years. It peaked when JJ was around the equivalent of 17 or 18 years old, and it got so bad that for a long time, JJ felt as though he was the one taking care of Jas most of the time, instead of the other way around.

A year or so after that though, Jas got his first major wake-up call (because as much as I hate to say it, Jas was a very functional alcoholic in public. Very few people could even tell that he was struggling with it in the first place...and when he did start to feel like people were catching on, he didn't interact with people as much, so he could continue to hide it.) when JJ very abruptly moved out on his own. It did take a bit to set in though, as after JJ left, he fell into another slump because JJ cut pretty much all contact with him at that point.

I couldn't say exactly what finally made it set in, but after a couple more months, Jas went from an "I failed my son, I couldn't make myself be the father that he deserved, I'm the worst" spiral, to "I failed my son, and so now I have to make it up to him and get better for him, even if he can't forgive me after everything."

And a lot happened over the years he was getting clean. JJ ended up moving back in with him after Jas saved him from a really bad romantic relationship. There were times he fell off the wagon. Times that he and JJ's relationship got really strained again, and times that they were okay.

Current day, he hasn't had a single sip of alcohol in 6 or 7 years. (Though he still definitely gets a craving from time to time-- especially in times of high stress-- he actually does have a very supportive group around him to help him get past it. This past year or two, he's even been able to start going back to the bar to hang out with the drinking party, which was a pretty big victory in his book, because he wasn't able to be around alcohol at all for those first few years without fixating on it and immediately having to leave)

When i say it's hard to speak with some people I always think about my mother because she exemplifies everything that I don't wanna be in life.

I mean she is sweet and I love her, don't get me wrong.

However, she is the kind of person who doesn't get anything you say.

I came out to her and she took it weird, then one day she yelled that I made her desperate or something, don't remember what she said exactly, and she mentioned that the fact i like girls was also part of this.

Then she forgets everything and keeps pestering me about finding a "boyfriend" and makes some disgusting jokes about my sex life, then she jokes that 'maybe you like girls then'.

The same happened when we talked about my brother, she kept repeating it was because he didn't have a girlfriend- when truly that's further from the truth it can get (he's fucking sensible)

It's like talking with a wall, she doesn't get anything, she just reacts in the most boomer way possible, she only cares about what other think of her, and when I say others I mean EVERYONE REALLY. I told her countless times that this mindset was strengthened by being raised in a fucking town where everyone knows everyone that can be just as nice as harmful.

She rejects that idea, but then complains we don't get married when everyone does (and as I say everyone I mean my cousins that recently a) got married b) proposed) because she FUCKING CARES that people will think badly of her (that she raised us wrong? we came out wrong? who knows) hiding it under this guise that she is actually trying to look after us because she wants to see us settled-

(I don't mean to say she doesn't care about us, I know she does, but as I said there's a further reason, something much more pressing that is pushing her)

I tried talking to her, but she doesn't get anything. I think she looks at me and in her mind she just sees a child who doesn't know what's good or what's supposed to do once you grow up-

I don't mean to say I have any idea what to do, but never once in my life I did things just because people told me "It's what everyone does".

Though I believe she expected me and my brother to do just that, which means that we have to a) get married, b) have children c) get a job, and with this I mean a state job obviously.

And this is not just her mentality, it is a widespread one and she is just another piece in the puzzle.

I've had some time to collect my thoughts after a couple of days so here they are even though nobody asked.

I really loved the finale. It was devestating, no doubt, but I think this is their best one yet and I absolutely loved how they handled it. There was so much grieving in this episode, not just from Carlos, but from Owen and Judd as well. But despite everything they chose happiness and the wedding ending up being beautiful and bittersweet and joyful all at once.

There has been the question of deleted scenes but there's really only one we've seen so far that I would have loved to see in the episode. Other than that, I'm just glad we get to have them all as extras. I don't think the wedding needed them though.

Another thing I'd like to add is that yes, sometimes storylines can feel rushed in shows where you have a lot of characters and especially if there are clear favorites within a fandom. There was a lot going on, but that doesn't necessarily mean any one character's storyline is less valuable than another's. I guess I'm speaking as less of a fandom member and just more as an enjoyer of the show if that makes any sense. I love all of the characters in this show, and while I would be lying if I said I liked every single storyline, that doesn't mean I wish they didn't happen. In this case, however, I loved all of the storylines and I think they all made sense together given the theme of this episode. I personally don't think any of them shouldn't have been there in favor of getting more wedding content.

Honestly, my only regret is not getting off of tumblr as soon as the final bts stuff started coming out. I'm pretty bad when it comes to guessing things so if I hadn't been aware of the theories I literally would have had no idea and it would have hit me so much harder. It still got me pretty good though.

Again these are just my opinions so feel free to ignore everything I say if you didn't feel the same. I'm happy though, and I'm going to continue being incredibly annoying about this show. ♡

#I'll just touch on this in the tags cayse more people have put this a lot more eloquently than I could #but in terms of the decision to kill of gabriel I know a lot of people feared two things #1) it was too close to the wedding 2) potential future storylines would take a hit #and if it had happened any other way I would have agreed with the second one #but the fact that we got that scene between him and carlos was really important #and they way it happened really opens the door for revisting this in the future #I would honestly be really surprised if they don't come back to this mystery because there's a lot of potential there #and speaking of potential I think we reallly started to see so much more of carlos and a side of his character that we've never seen before #him dealing with his grief and in the end chosing to allow himself to have his wedding #that moment between him and owen #I loved all of it and I know in shows like this it can feel like characters start to get stagnant but this is definitely not the case here #not just carlos but everyone else had moments this season that just showed us so much more of them #and it makes me excited for their character development and what future storylines will hold #anyway I think those are all of my thoughts #if you're going to say anything please be nice I don't really do well with negativity #I usually stay out of fandoms for actively airing shows because discourse isn't great for my mental health #but since y'all are like 90% lost shameless mutuals and 10% bots I feel safe enough to share my opinions publicly lmao #har rambles #911 lone star #weewoo rambles
