I wanna get this out of my head and you’re one of the people that I know will set me straight. I am so beyond proud of Nicky and his new show! That teaser for M&G was fucking amazing and I know it’ll definitely get him so many nominations and awards (as he rightfully deserves - the man has been putting the work)!!!! I guess I’m feeling….bitter? Idk if that’s the right word. I’ve been living on a high from RWRB I want to see more of him and Taylor together, more RWRB content. It’s his job of course and I know he’s got so many more roles to come in his career. I just……yea don’t know how to deal with seeing so many M&G posts in the RWRB tags when I don’t think I’ll ever move on from Alex and Henry 😔

I know what you mean and I understand that feeling. I don’t think you’re entirely wrong or unjustified. The thing is, we didn’t get the full experience for Red, White & Royal Blue. There’s a big difference between these two projects.

Neither of them could even acknowledge RWRB, let alone celebrate it, despite it coming out and smashing expectations for over a month straight (lol).

It’s also not the same in that Nick, despite for some reason being labeled as “a rising star” by some news outlets and YouTube channels, has been the lead in a major production with a famous costar before (Purple Hearts & Cinderella). There’s no need to hype up working with Julianne Moore; people have already been laughing and pointing out how despite being the bigger and more notable actress, most people are talking about Nick. In contrast, Taylor had never been a lead before, so talking about working with him would’ve been significantly different.

They’re also the same age, which changes the dynamic between them. I’m not sure if or how much press they will be doing for this, but I think it’s fair to say that it would be more fun/entertaining to see Nick and Taylor together than Nick and Julianne, which is nothing against her at all. I’m sure she’s absolutely lovely.

Another difference is that RWRB is an original story based off a popular novel, and it was doubted from the start. Mary & George is based on real history, which gives it a significant advantage. Both have LGBT+ sexual elements, but it’s far easier to grab attention if you can slap the “based on a true story” in front of it; it simply intrigues people who aren’t fully convinced more, and that’s why they use it.

Basically, the “what could’ve been” for RWRB is probably the bitterness you’re feeling.

I’m not going to tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t feel that. Instead, I’ll just tell you not to let those feelings bring others down; if you want to express them, find a friend that you know you can talk to, and talk to them about it. I’m sure there’s plenty of others that have similar feelings. I myself was experiencing a weird negative emotion deep down in my chest underneath the excitement that I couldn’t place until typing all this out.

The important thing to focus on is how proud of Nick we are/should be. It’s that positivity that we want to spread. Hopefully that helps!

Quick disclaimer: I mean no hate or ill will at all to any fanfic writers who’ve written this trope. You’re all very talented and u shouldn’t let my personal taste stop u from writing what u want to write. This is just me complaining for fun bcus I’m a brat and I care way to much about stupid internet stuff concerning my vampire blorbos. Also this isn’t directed towards any individual fanfic and/or fanfic author since I’ve seen lots of works that include this, and wouldn’t be able to name or remember any specific work even if I wanted to bcus I dislike this sm that I rarely stick around for long when this comes up in stuff I read. So plz don’t be like “oh this is about xyz isn’t it?” Bcus I guarantee u it is not

I’ve noticed this trope that’s become common enough to be annoying to me recently concerning Nicki. This isn’t a fanfic exclusive phenomenon, it’s also present as a general attitude among amc iwtv fans mostly which is a rant for another day. But basically what it boils down to is fanfic writers (pretty much always in AUs for reasons that will become obvious) characterizing/utilizing Nicki as the romantic rival for loustat and/or bitter ex who we should be rooting against bcus he’s interfering with the Ship. I really dislike this trope! As someone who’s a certified Nicolas de Lenfent fanboy it’s so disappointing whenever I come across a fanfic that includes Nicolas as a reoccurring character and he ends up being stripped of all his nuance and character traits and boiled down to unlikable romantic rival. It sucks! And it’s frustrating especially bcus theirs literally canonical loustat romantic rivals (Antoine/Antoinette for show fans bcus tbh this is a very amc exclusive occurrence) that could easily fulfill this role! And if that doesn’t suit your fancy we have love interests of Lestat that r generally disliked/unlikeable (at least imo) that could be used in a similar way (coughcoughDavidTalbotcoughcough). And u could make an argument that those characters just don’t have Nicki’s brand of drama and emotion and yes! I agree! That’s why I’m frustrated! Bcus I would eat up a fanfic that explored a love triangle or rivalry between Nicki, Louis, and Lestat where shit hit the fan over the unique conflict and drama that would unravel considering the characters and their dynamics + history, au-ified or otherwise, but I’ve never come across a fanfic like this! And trust me, I read a lot of fanfic. It’s just a little saddening for me tbh. I love Nicolas sm, I don’t like reading about him as the shitty ex bf and the shitty ex bf only, with little to no depth. The reason I’m complaining about this is bcus it’s reached the point where it’s clogging the Nicki character tag on a03 a bit, I keep finding fanfic with him in it and checking it out only to find him portrayed as a stock bitter ex character. And I honestly don’t know where this characterization even came from when it comes to the show fans? Bcus Nicolas has only ever been framed in the show as Lestat’s tragically and mysteriously dead first love, and it’s like, idk how u can hear about that and come to the conclusion that this guy would make sense as the romantic rival? Like poor Nicolas lol, he’s literally dead let him rest 😭. He doesn’t have any part in this ship drama 💀. And now I’m getting a lil off track and verging onto general Nicolas hate in the fandom and not just in fanfic, but whatever, I all ready decided I’m not touching that. But u know, as a side note, Nicolas in book canon was never once framed as someone who’s existence is a threat to loustat and the validity of their love, so u don’t need to make him about that! Louis and Lestat r immature messes who can’t function healthily ever but not to the point where Louis has beef with Lestat’s literally dead ex boyfriend 💀 c’mon now

also if I didn’t make it clear my beef isn’t with framing Nicki as a villain I love me a messy bitter bitch.My beef is with stripping him of all that makes him interesting for the sake of having a generic romantic rival in ur fic. Not a fan of that. However I am all for messy bitter bitch Nicki. Idk this phenomenon just comes off as weird and kind of upsetting to me. It’s kind of like if the John Wick fandom had a trend where ppls self insert ocs or y/n characters had drama with John Wick’s dead wife…it’d be uncomfortable. (I’m not in the John Wick fandom so idk if this is an actual thing lmao).

Absolutely delighted by the suggestion Scam sits back up on the couch. “Truth or dare hmm? Thats a bold choice~ Wouldn’t that be more fun with …. Let’s say one or two more players?” As he counts a blue and pink version of Scam appear on the couch on either side of him.

All three versions of Scam grin and eye Jodie like he’s on the menu.

“Or is it too overwhelming to be… let’s call it ‘outnumbered’ for now~”

Jodie figured he’d have some way of giving himself the advantage, But now faced with three versions of Chaos incarnate his confidence was starting to waver. “It’s fine. I can handle it”

“Oooh! Delightful! Tell me since you’re so brave, are we placing a wager? Perhaps the first to back out owes the other one favor~?” The grin that was spreading across Scam’s face had Jodie’s mouth feeling a bit too dry.

“I’ll take that bet… But one rule, no dares that magically change my life…. Deal?” Like hell he was going to play if he was going to pull something like he did to Ron again.

“Deal~ this is a friendly game, I’m not looking to avenge anyone this time so you can relax~ “ he holds out a slightly too long hand to shake on it and Jodie, who’s starting to think he made a mistake, shakes before he can change his mind. “ Go ahead then you brave boy~ start the game~”

Jodie sits back on the couch trying to feign confidence. “Ok. Truth or dare?”

The original Scam laughs “I believe it was Ron who said dare was the sexier option~ so go ahead! Hit me with your best dare~”

Shit. He’d been hoping for truth so he could get him to admit he’s been messing with him. “I dare you not to use any magic for the rest of the night” Jodie grins right back at Scam.

“Ohhh? Interesting! cut me off then~ These two will disappear on their own anyway~” Scam was enjoying this probably more than Jodie knew. It was rare that someone else initiated anything like this with him.

The pink Scam temples his fingers, smirking at Jodie “Truth or Dare Jodie?”

Jodie weighs his options. He was sure all versions of Scam would target him so he was about to get asked the same thing two more times… “truth.”

“I’ll make it a juicy one then~” Scam Pink laughs, absolutely tickled by the fact that he gets to ask something he’d been curious about “Do you miss being human?”

Jodie frowns Scam would be able to tell if he lied, that much he was sure of… So he’d give him the honest truth “It was me but it wasn’t… I lived in that reality for most of Nickolas’ life… every last memory I have of his childhood is back there in that life… so its natural for me to miss it sometimes isn’t it? I suppose I could just go back to earth if I really wanted to… I could look human again… but Nicky…. He’s not who he used to be either…. So it wouldn’t be the same…it wouldn’t be that peaceful easy life we had as a family no matter what I did… I don’t know that I fully want it to be either… Nicky has both Glenn and I and He likes the freedom of going back and forth… so I’ll just keep working, and spend the time with him that I can…So yeah sometimes I miss it… but I don’t want to go back…”

The expression on every version of Scam sitting across from him softens slightly. The pink one speaks up again, suddenly next to him. “It’s normal to mourn parts of your life that are gone~ you went through big changes after all~” He traces a finger over one of Jodie’s horns as if to make his point in the most flirtatious way possible.

“Yeah well it’s not like I miss the time I spent as the battle axe of hatred and that was a big part of my life too…” he doesn’t pull away when the pink version of Scam wraps an arm around him “you’re probably right though…. wait! you lose, you teleported to this couch!”

A chorus of Scam’s laughter drowns out the jazz music for a moment before they settle back down “That wasn’t magic~ I’m just that fast!”

Any victorious feeling that briefly flashed up inside of Jodie just as quickly fizzled out. “You just get more impressive with everything I learn about you…”

The original Scam just smiles, two of his hands clasping over his heart, another hand fanning himself. “Ohh what a flatterer you are! ‘be still my heart’ and all that~” Though he was sure it was unintentional Scam was enjoying the positive attention he was getting. “It’s my turn! Truth or Dare…. Hmm… I choose Jodie~”

He wasn’t surprised, he’d expected to be chosen every turn. What he hadn’t accounted for was losing half his focus to the Pink Scam who was leaning against him. He figured it was Scam trying to comfort him so he just lets it happen. “Truth”

“Hmm~ I can’t help but feel like you’re trying to take the easy way out~” He laughs and leans back on the couch, crossing his legs. It didn’t matter really to him what Jodie chose, he was having fun playing, but truth afforded him some opportunities he wouldn’t otherwise have. “Are you interested in someone~?”

Shit well, at least he hadn’t asked Jodie to name names. “Yes…. There’s someone that’s got me interested”

“Ohhh? Tell me, is it someone we know?~” Both the blue and purple versions of Scam lean closer. The pink version seemed perfectly comfortable where it was, several hands curled around the arm he was leaning on.

Jodie grins at Scam “one question at a time” and there it was, the last time he could choose truth without being in danger of admitting something. He relaxes a bit knowing what was going to come next.

The blue version of Scam folds his arms “truth or dare! I choose… Scam!”

“What?” Jodie’s mind was racing with a million questions, he had thought these were just copies of Scam, but were they thinking independently? Why would he choose himself? What was he playing at?

“Truth~” he swings one of his legs a bit, all four hands folded in his lap as he keeps his eyes firmly locked on Jodie.

The blue Scam smirks as though he’s got one up on himself “has anyone caught your eye?”

“Ohhh yes~ very much so~! I find him incredibly interesting and it doesn’t hurt at all that he’s so ridiculously good looking~ if only he’d get the hint~!” He doesn’t break eye contact with Jodie, staring him down with intent.

He frowns, everything seemed to suggest it was part of the bit directed at him. But…Scam seemed to take games pretty seriously so he didn’t doubt he was actually just confessing to liking someone. He wonders briefly if any of the other Daddies fit that description. There’s a flash of jealousy when he tries to picture it.

“If he’s not picking up on hints why don’t you just be direct?”

Scam shouldn’t be surprised Jodie was still being so stubbornly oblivious, but really that was as close to an actual confession as he’d gone and it’d still failed. “It might surprise you to hear, but I’m not fond of rejection either~”

“Do… you want help?” Jodie knew realistically that he’d probably have a hard time doing it but he honestly wanted to see Scam happy.

“That’s nice of you to offer but the act of seduction is a game in of itself~ it’s not exactly one you play in teams, though if it was, I would love nothing more to be on your team~” Scam’s smile softens even more.

“Maybe that’s exactly why it isn’t working…? You keep thinking of things in terms of games… but relationships don’t work like that… you are supposed to be a team. You can’t build something long lasting if you both aren’t working together… maybe treat it like that and see if it makes a difference?”

Scam goes quiet biting back the want to insist that he’s actually right, sitting back again on the couch a bit rigidly “I think you might be right~ maybe I’m wrong after all… isn’t that concept a novelty?~ It’s your turn again Jodie!”

“Yeah, uh okay Truth or Dare?” He smiles, this was pretty fun after all.

“Who? Me, me or the other me?” Scam visibly relaxes, laughing.

“You” Jodie laughs too.

“Oh of course~ I choose dare! Give me your worst, handsome~ I can handle it!”

He claps his hands excitedly.

“I dare you to…” shit, he was drawing a blank. Everything his brain was supplying was so juvenile. “Oh! This isn’t it right? So show me what you really look like.”

His eyes widen in surprise. “Oh what an interesting dare! Are you absolutely sure that’s what you want~? It’s not going to be very fun for you”

He shrugs, giving him a smug smile “I thought you said you could handle it. I guess you chicken out then ?”

“Oh no, Not at all! I just don’t want you to have any regrets~” he supposes it was a just matter of time before Jodie saw it and any budding interest he could have had in him fades to nothing. He didn’t actually want to do this, but it was a dare and he wasn’t about to lose. “Will it count against the dare forbidding me from magic? I can’t do both~”

“It’s an exception, come on, don’t try to get out of it with excuses” Jodie had been curious since they’d met and now that he’d dared him he was intent on seeing it.

“If you insist~” his skin starts to bubble, his bones cracking and creaking as his limbs and spine lengthen. His skin pulls tight across the changing bones in his face, several more eyes open below and above the three he’d had already, his jaw spitting into a grin that was wider than his elongated face could accommodate.

Jodie stares up at him, dwarfed by Scam in this form. If he was being honest with himself, this didn’t hinder his attraction to Scam in the least.

The other two versions of Scam are pulled into him, disappearing into the skin of his massively long arms. He moves forward, meter long fingers curling around Jodie’s chest, pinning him against the couch with just one hand. He leans in, face inches from Jodie’s, more then a half dozen eyes locked on him .

Jodie’s heart was pounding in his ears. He could feel a blush spreading over his face “shit…”

Scam could feel his heart racing.

He quickly changes back “Oops~ I guess that was probably a bit much for you huh? It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to let loose like that~! But it’s fine~ Really, who doesn’t prefer a more compact and sexy Scam~?” He laughs, uncomfortable with how quiet Jodie had gotten, leaning close, a significantly smaller hand still planted on the center of Jodie’s chest. His heart rate wasn’t slowing. He must have terrified him.

“You… wow….” Jodie smiles, no hint of fear in his voice, there was however an edge of excitement to his voice that was the last thing he expected out of the demon “damn you’re tall…”

Scam makes no effort to move from his position, Jodie’s genuine smile throwing him for a loop. This, he was sure, was not going to be the last time Jodie would absolutely fascinate him. This was enough to tip the scales for him, no more skirting around what he wanted. His voice practically a purr “Truth or Dare Jodie~”

“Dare…” Jodie’s smile widens a bit.

“Kiss me~ if you’re not a cowar—“

Jodie doesn’t wait for him to finish, closing the distance between them, lips crashing against Scam’s in a desperate open mouth kiss. He reaches up, sliding a hand into Scam’s hair and pulling him closer.

Scam moans into the kiss, closing his eyes and losing himself in it. He’d wanted this for a while and it was everything he’d imagined and more… it wasn’t by any means a good kiss… it was sloppy and desperate… but it was the desperation he found so appealing. The way they both held each other tightly pressed against the other, wanting to somehow kiss harder, to kiss more, a crescendo of feelings they’d both been holding back. Any doubts he had about Jodie feeling something back were gone, no one kisses like this and doesn’t mean it.

was gonna say this in the tags of the post i just rb'd but it's like fictional content drama not real life stuff like that post is talking about so ill just say it here: the idea that "you are always x person that did x terrible thing" is so stupid and miserable ESPECIALLY in fictional stories tbh. i recently broke a mutual on tumblr bc this person just would not stop going on and on and on about how nicky from the old guard is "still the same man that did ethnic cleansing" and they dont know how joe had the capacity to forgive him or whatever when like. the whole fucking point of nickys character is that he tried and is STILL TRYING very hard to make up for the person he was almost one thousand fucking years ago and he HAS been forgiven by a man who was literally directly and lethally harmed by his actions so like. idk what my point is here it's just boring. like yes by all means if a person has demonstrated that they have not changed and still hold onto these beliefs or still perpetrate these actions then go ahead call them out (for whatever good that will do lmao) but jesus christ. if people are making active and consistent and demonstrable efforts to change and become better, then what possible right do you have to hold them to the shit they did in their past especially as an outsider looking in who wasn't directly harmed?

Oh gosh I need need need to know about the J/N Firefly fic and the Vietnam war au!!??

By the incredibly unscientific poll of folks who respond to WIP memes, clearly I should work on the Joe/Nicky Firefly AU next. ;)

So since I already replied to that one - oh, Vietnam War AU, why do I continue listing you in these WIP tag games when I know I will never finish you? This is a Steve/Bucky fic I started, uh, more than seven years ago apparently? And then abandoned when I stopped writing entirely for a few years, alas. But hey, I've since had my personal breakup with the MCU as a whole, gotten over it, and may yet circle back around to just saying fuck it and writing the characters like we're still in 2014, which is what this AU needs.

I know I've posted snippets of it here before, but basically, it's meant to be a nonlinear retelling of the first Cap movie if their war was Vietnam instead of WWII, with all the cynicism and disillusionment that entails. So, yeah, kind of a bleak concept overall, which is also part of why I never managed to pull it off. IDK. I still like the bones of the idea and the bits I've written of it, just need to be in a very particular head space to tackle it properly again. Maybe someday, like I've been promising myself for the past seven years.

Steve thought he knew what rain was, back home in New York. Rain was the rattle on the car hoods on the streets of Brooklyn, the bottomless puddle at the curb where the storm drain was blocked up with debris, the sideways slant that destroyed a succession of cheap umbrellas. Icy sleet that turned into slush as soon as it hit the pavement in the winter. Heavy storms that temporarily broke the summer swelter and when they were done, the city air smelled just a little bit cleaner, like a fresh start.

He'd had no idea.

Rain in Vietnam comes down in bucketfuls, like arterial blood spraying through a gaping wound in the angry, leaden sky. It's heavy and unrelenting and the air is so damn humid that he feels like he's swimming through it. He's drowning with every breath -- and this is with lungs that actually work properly. The rain doesn't break the heat; it compounds it, steaming where it hits the exposed skin on his face and the back of his neck, churning the jungle vegetation into an endless quagmire of mud. He sinks almost knee-deep with every step. He wonders if a new race of superpowered leeches is currently evolving from their prodigious consumption of his serum-enhanced blood.

He can barely see two feet in front of him, but he still leads his patrol forward, step by aching step, waterlogged rifle worse than useless in his hands. Not that he'd be able to spot any V.C. in time to point it at 'em, anyway. At least vibranium doesn't rust.

Author Commentary: Taste of forever

So, after a whole year of tormenting myself & the homies, I have finally published the NHS x JL fic that has been occupying prime brain real estate.

It would be better to read it before you subject yourself to this author commentary, but if you’ve read it already, commentary below!

I’ve been writing this story on and off for like a year now, and well…. Yeah. It’s been a thing. I’ve kinda had fun because I don’t know if anyone else has done this yet, but here we are!

This pairing has been living in my head rent free for a hot minute, but it was originally inspired by a scene in chapter 8 from A bit of ruthlessness by Jirluvien on ao3. It’s a xicheng fic, but this throwaway interaction between these 2 sparked something within me, I taunted my friend with it, wrote an initial concept that got way too long and unmanageable and then took the cowards way out by writing this. I haven’t linked it as inspired by A bit of ruthlessness on ao3 cause I still need to ask permission from Jirluvien because I’m not sure if they’d wanna be associated with all of this.

Anyway, after I initially thought of it, I was like ‘yo is there fic for this’ & surprise surprise, fucking nothing. So I tool it upon myself to craft the narrative I wanted to witness. But as I publish this, it is the 3rd fic in the tag, so maybe there is hope yet!

This is still only the first half after various edits. I had to split it in half because NHS pov is different from JL pov.

So the story starts at 9:46pm on January 19 2021 when I text my friend:

I just wrote the outline for a Nie Huaisang/Jin Ling fic and titled it after that one Icarus meme playlist; Pretty Fly for a white guy

I'm about to cry

There is so much that is ridiculous about this

And no one was able to stop me, so everything kind of snowballed into what I have published. (Hilariously enough, this fic was supposed to be only 500 words long, yet here we are...)

The thing is that I really do unironically love this ship and thinking about it and writing about it. They’re both such fascinating characters with a lot of depth and I was kind of curious as to how a relationship between the 2 of them would develop considering the wealth of trauma and issues between them. But in this verse I chickened out and gave y’all the soft version. But I’m like 5 steps away from writing a ship manifesto for these 2.

I decided to post this commentary here rather than in the author’s note section on ao3 because I have too many feelings, too much to say, and it would probably constitute as cruel & unusual punishment if I subjected people to this without any warning whatsoever. (Can you imagine reading a fic and the author’s commentary is just as long as the fic itself? I’m obviously not going to blaze this trail, but if this becomes the norm, I would be so excited because I love seeing how different everyone’s writing process is!)

Anyway, enough of my infodump exposition, here are my actual comments on the content of the fic!

The title of the fic is from 12345sex by Upsahl because when I was initially writing this, I listened to a lot of her music. I am halfway certain I have a playlist for this fic/verse laying around somewhere, but I am not organized on the very best of days so idk where it is. If I do find it, I would be more than happy to publish it.

I could have titled this story after Moment for life by Nicki Minaj, to really fit the theme, but I didn’t. Because by the time the idea occurred to me, I was already attached to the current title. And also, Nicki’s whole thing.

This story/verse was initially titled: ‘pretty fly for 2 dope guys’ after the offspring song and because when I started planning it, it had a very differnt vibe. At one point, I seriously considered titling it “Kiss, Kiss, Stab” so make of that what you will.

Anyway, here are the most memorable lines of this story for me.

Jin Ling is trying to be less dramatic than the adults who raised him, but given half the chance, he would push everyone on his list down the very long Koi Tower stairs.

Writing this line was kind of fun because immediately after I finished typing it, I kinda did a little villain cackle because I’m assuming that Jin Ling doesn’t know how cruelly ironic this statement is.

His name on Nie Huaisang’s lips becomes an achingly beautiful sound; the chirping of birds in spring lifting his mood, the rushing of lakes in summertime cooling him to bearability, the rustling of autumn leaves granting him a small moment of private reprieve, a winter hearth crackling and bringing warmth to his bones.

Ok so i actually had to google autumn sounds cause I don’t experience that, but everything else was courtesy of my reading experiences. Additionally, I’m 93% sure that ‘bearability’ isn’t an actual word, but fanfiction is meant to be transformative, so I am absolutely going to stretch my artistic license in this one instance.

Speaking of which, if anyone can recommend autumn themed texts (movies, tv shows, books, music, video game walkthroughs) I would be more than happy to experience them! I don’t think I’ve consumed enough autumn centric media. As long as there is either an English or French translation, I’ll be able to understand it.

there are a lot of fics i love in a way thats like 'this fic is fun but it doesnt feel like something that would happen in the Actual Canon' (which is fine!) but this one Does feel like it could happen in The Actual Canon which is cool

this fic also has probably my favorite depiction of nicky's relationship with god/religion in any fic ive read ('[nicky's] peace had come only after walking away from faith as a competition of intensity in favor of faith as a steady compass that he followed like the beat of his heart in his chest.'). i love the whole Drama played out by the background characters and how they all have their own ideas and motivations & nicky is just kind of resigned to being caught in the middle of it.

(also love how near the beginning joe's like 'the Right thing to do in the situation would be stay at this river and help these people.... ... ....... ... .... ... anyways see ya guys later gotta go find nicky'.)

also joe chatting up a pig and the five minutes later chatting up some goats was so cute. & nicky trying to tell the baby's mother how to save it!!!! </3 AND THEY ARGUE ABOUT CHARITY on the way home (not before joe injects a comment abt nickys ass into regular conversation bc Romance™) its a bit of a sad fic tho, that poor baby 🥺

also i just like how WHIPPED joe is from like the first 3 seconds he sees nicky. theres one bit where nicky's like 'ill come visit you!' and joe's like 'when🥺' and nicky's like 'as soon as you like!' and joes like 'now?????🥺🥺🥺 literally come home with me???' incredible.

also the Magic System was cool. i also love how nicky just Accidentally made himself immortal. what a man. also i like this line 'it would never occur to [nicky] to attend any service that wasn’t going to have a direct outcome. Grace takes comfort from it, so maybe that’s the only outcome needed.' idk its so sweet

edit: also i cant believe i forgot the iconic line 'Yusuf is a man of two minds, one large and underutilized, the other small and underutilized.' absolutely iconic & relatable

What is the point of staying in a fandom where your works are being boiled down to a single moment with no context or nuance?

I have 5 days left of The Old Guard content in my queue (and honestly I might set it to post more often so it runs out sooner) after that. I'm taking a break.

me rambling about the vendetta uquiz and your answers

the question about floyd’s confession tripped up a lot of ppl so i changed it :) you def don’t have to retake it but i just wanted to let ya’ll know {unfortunately there’s no way to do a ‘if you pick any one of these it’s right’ so it’s another freebie question lol}

anyway, let’s get into some of these answers 😂

for question 10 when nicky asks “what’d you call me?” someone said “my little cannoli” 😭💕 i kinda like that better than what i came up with!

and for one of the fill in the blanks someone said “jeez toots” 🤧💫💞 i love this answer so much why can i see nicky saying this with a smirk so clearly in my head?!?

@gabrivllas same 😪💖 they’re so cute, they make me think of puppy love even though i think taylor would be a bit older than chris but there’s this innocence and shyness to their dynamic that’s so cute. i think what i mean is they both don’t want to hurt each other, considering the work they do or past relationships they’ve had and are maybe still healing from, but they cannot let each other go either; so, it’s all very soft, warm, and caring.

@mahirublue this is one of my favorite parts too!! i make bullet points before writing each chapter but a lot of the moments here weren’t planned at all but it is by far the most cohesive chapter. there’s just this even flow there that really sucks you in and i’m so proud of it :) and i also loved writing nicky in such an emotional state even though it lowkey hurt 🥺 @anonymous-eggy was right, mr. loverman fits perfectly 😭 maybe i should listen to that song while rereading that chapter??

how do you think this fandom deals with "measuring" trauma? i've seen a couple posts detailing aaron's reaction to trauma/nicky's reaction//seth's/etc and it seems like some people have a tier list of trauma responses in regards to the foxes? like what's "acceptable" versus what isn't, and who's trauma was "enough" to make their actions excusable versus others. this doesn't make much sense but i hope you get where i'm coming from?

i think it’s something i used to see more said explicitly than i see it now. like i definitely remember a point in the fandom when ppl were very openly mad at aaron for the way he acted in the books and especially him not being “grateful” enough for all that andrew had “done for him.” additionally seth used to be used as a minor villain or an abusive ex in fics a lot more than i see now. then of course there was a period of calling out these trends and reminding ppl that these are books about trauma, not books about ethics, and that you really really can’t read them without attempting compassion for every character. they’re not books about who’s right and who’s wrong, they can’t really be read in terms of theory or ideology. they’re about survival and recovery.

i haven’t really seen those sentiments in the past few years tho, at least not as openly as they once were, nor have i seen the old posts recirculating. at the same time, i think that there’s less meta and character analysis being written in general so there’s also less debate in general. i don’t see the whole fandom tho, just who i follow and the stuff from the tags that shows up on my tl. if this stuff is actively still going on idk about it, though i’d like to think we as a collective have moved on from seeing trauma as a zero-sum game

additionally, because of the discourse period over them it seems like aaron and seth in particular are treated with extra care not to invalidate that they came from abusive situations and were shaped by that. i’d say it’s now seen as bad taste to openly denounce what a character has been through as “not enough”

however

measuring trauma isn’t always angry, it isn’t always saying to a character “you didn’t go through enough” or “he went through more so shut up.” measuring trauma can also be dismissive. it can take the form of simply choosing not to include it. of removing character traits or actions or topics that make us uncomfortable or are maybe complicated to approach. by removing them or replacing them or avoiding them and simply writing like they’re not there, you essentially get to the same place as saying “get over it” but instead you write them as having, well, gotten over it

so i do still see people measuring trauma it’s just not as outright anymore. instead it’s paring certain characters down for ease and digestibility, and simply not engaging with their trauma and circumstances

i would say i see this most often with the upperclassmen, dan, matt, and allison especially (and nicky even though he’s not an upperclassmen) (ik i mentioned him but seth content is still pretty few and far between) (renee’s trauma has the “rule of cool” so it still gets in there). i’ve mentioned before how sidelined the upperclassmen are in fan works and some of the unfortunate implications of that, but another dimension is not acknowledging or considering their individual backgrounds. they all come from some pretty fucked up circumstances and more than that they’re all SHAPED by those circumstances

in the books, they are all wary isolationists with attitude issues. they can be mean, they can be nasty, and they can be violent. they come from poverty, abuse, neglect, drug addicition, gang violence, and sex trafficking. they are treated with extreme suspicion by their school, the media, their classmates, and their fellow athletes, and they respond with suspicion right back. their relationships with each other are often on thin ice. they treat neil the way they do - tolerate his puzzle pieces that don’t fit together right without questioning - because they can all recognize themselves in him. and on the flip side, neil is able to relate to them for the same reasons, because they are also wary dogs used to being hit

but then i so often see the upperclassmen used in ways that mostly imply they’re like,, mostly normal, chill, often quite woke. goofy and cool. they all grew up watching disney movies and going to carnivals. they get used as a contrast for neil and andrew to highlight their traumatized behavior and the extremity of their circumstances, and if their trauma gets mentionted at all it’s in passing and it doesn’t inform the way they act. their trauma isn’t sufficient to inform their actions so it just,, doesn’t factor in or get mentioned really and they’re all nice, friendly, happy-go-lucky neurotypicals who are trying to teach poor traumatized neil how to be normal. tell me that isn’t measuring trauma

it’s annoying, in all honesty, especially since it now seems to come in a form that’s hard to call out because it’s no longer content that actually states a bad opinion so much as it is a lack of content or consideration for certain characters, pushing them further and further into the background and giving them increasingly more vague, palatable, and relatable characterizations.

in fact, it often comes off as praise, by ascribing them positive traits like nicky being a good guardian for the twins or allison being super knowledgeable about lgbt stuff or dan being a “queen” or matt being a “himbo” and because this is all good stuff it’s fine, right? it’s better than canon actually, right? except actually what it is is dismissive of their trauma and individual experiences. it’s a series of easily digestible filler words used to make the messy, ugly, complicated characters of canon softer and easier to swallow

also this is by no means restricted to the upperclassmen it’s just the one that slips most through the cracks. i definitely see this happening to andrew, too, but it works in slightly different ways and is a whole other discussion
