IKUMI’S TRANSLATION PROJECT by BERRY BERRY SCANS ♥
Hello guys! ♥
I’m KuRo93.
As you may already know, I'm taking care of Ikumi's Translation Project, which has as its goal to let the world know, read and love Mia Ikumi's most important mangas. Unfortunately, unless Tokyo Mew Mew, her mangas have been poorly supported outside Japan and have never been scanned or fan-translated from Japanese. Thankfully, most of them have been published in my country, Italy, during the early 2000's, following the massive success Tokyo Mew Mew had here. I bought a second copy of each Ikumi's manga volumes published in Italy (Super Doll Licca-chan, Repure and Wish).
I also bought from Japan Girls fight!, an Ikumi's oneshot published on Nakayoshi in 2004. This one in particular is pretty unknown to...the world.
  I will take care of scanning, translating and editing of the scans and will update the process in this post from time to time ♥ Some people will help me and will be credited for their work ♥ All the works will be signed with the Berry Berry Scans logo to prevent theft of material.
Please, be informed that we all have a life outside here, so we will work on the project when we will have time.
How about Koi Cupid? Koi Cupid has never been published outside Japan and the whole serie is extremely hard to find at the moment. Since we all want to read it, I will do my best to find it and do the same with this manga ♥

Hasegawa Ikumi and Shouya Chiba in 86 -エイティシックス - 1st Anniversary Operation (2022.04.10/夜)
Hello. This is the translation of Shouya Chiba's speech (and a little bit of Hasegawa Ikumi’s san as well) during the 86 - エイティシックス / eighty six - 1st anniversary Operation (April 10th 2022/night). I already posted it in my livejournal but decided to put this translation here as well. Hasegawa Ikumi-san:  I’m really happy. I could work with awesome cast, and the staff here.. I’m surrounded by great staff. Also, I could work with a great vibe like this, and for having me involved in this project... Ah, what should I say, it’s like this kind of fortunate that would not come twice. I had a great time. Thank you so much for supporting “86 -eighty-six-” (anime) up until now. There is also the original work (light novel) as well so from now to be able once more to believe in Lena, Shin, and everyone.. and see their dream, I would like to spend another chance like that in the future. When that time comes, it would be a pleasure for me if we could gather again in the future and fight together again. Thank you so much for today.
Shouya Chiba-san:  I’m the voice actor of Shinei Nouzen, Shouya Chiba. Um... Being cast and being able to work as the heroine in this project, being able to deliver all of those work (cried). Uh,.. to do this one-season project seriously, to be allowed to do it is such (an honor). Maybe because everyone told me, how do I say, I think Shin is.. he seems to be completely unconcerned about himself, what kind of person he is, he doesn’t know much about himself but, it's really something to see him being able to meet everyone in Spearhead, being able to meet Lena, being able to meet everyone who told him “you are truly kind” while believing on him.
Also, while doing it, I wonder whether Shin will get his answer for (the purpose of) his life.. whether it’s because everyone is trying their best to live their life or because Shin is letting people around him live their life. That’s why, when that time comes I think... Well, maybe saying Shin is the heroine sounds wrong because I think everyone is the heroine here. And when I met everyone in the cast, everyone who made this project happen, and also everyone who is involved in this project, gladly from the bottom of my heart I could say this is such a fortune for me. Um, well as an actor I think what I’m going to say is kind of unfair but (thanks to this project), I could meet a lot of important people in my life and there are important people around Shin as well, and that is such progress.
That’s why I believe when I took the role as Shin, all the things that I did was thanks to the others, thanks to the viewers. I’m grateful that I listened to the other characters as well for this. Thank you very much.
Hee… It’s going to be lonely isn’t, it? Right? The usual recording place for 86 is going to be gone, the thought of cannot be able to meet the others again, I can’t help thinking of being lonely. What are we going to do? Hmm, the only way is no other than keep continue the project, right? Seriously…  
Hasegawa Ikumi-san: Right
Shouya Chiba-san:  No, seriously. I think it was really hard to make this kind of work, like before we were told “you are going to play this character, this is the script”, seriously there were a lot of people even in their sleep they keep thinking about cut this and cut that, cried most of the time and while having dark memories like that they keep making this work. But I couldn’t say that we could continue it because I know I’m talking to all the people here and the people who watch the streaming for this event. But, deep in my heart, I would like to see the new view, the place that Shin wanted to show to Lena, so if there is any chance to do it, I’d be very happy if all of us truly hoping to make it happen. I’m sorry, it became so long. Thank you very much. Once more I’m sorry. But it’s better to be told, right?

Tokyo Mew Mew New VA Unit Smewthie Posts English Message to Overseas Fans
    As reported, the five members of the Tokyo Mew Mew New's VA unit Smewthie has been learning English for their future overseas activities in the special YouTube program "Tokyo Mew Mew New English!" since July. In its latest fourth episode, they finally decide to deliver a message in English to their international fans.
  First, Ichigo Momomiya's VA Temma Yuuki prepares the message in Japanese, then all the members work together to translate it into English. Check out the results of the girls' efforts for two months in the video below! (the actual English message begins at 07:12)

The new TV anime series Tokyo Mew Mew New has been in the works for a premeire in 2022.

Well, the year of the rat/mouse has arrived. I’ve been busy with the scans for Au Lait, so I unfortunately didn’t have time to make a doodle of “Mousy”. So here are both the Kodansha (left) and Singapore (right) English translations of the page Mia Ikumi made about her in Tokyo Mew Mew’s 1st volume. Kind of interesting how the translations differ. The Singapore translation was quite a bit more wordy and even seems to add stuff that the Kodansha and Tokyopop translations didn’t.
As for upcoming stuff for 2020, the “Year of Mew Mew!”, I’m about halfway done with Au Lait’s 2nd chapter scans. Also the first part of my big Mew Mew art project will be up on January 5th, along with an explanation on what it is (Hint: If you know Mew Mew’s significance to that date, you might be able to figure it out X3.). There are also 2 other secret Mew Mew projects that I’m making as well.
As for the “reanimated” project, I’m thinking of giving it a go but it’ll have to wait until I’m able to find the time to separate all of the scenes. I’ll keep you all posted concerning that.

TRICOT - MAKKURO

You got your math rock in my pop punk!
Ryo Miyauchi: While Tricot made their name in the last decade compacting unhinged math-rock into tuneful pop, "Makkuro" softens their once-jagged edges and tones down the jamming. The act of restraint here, though, translates to maturity and self-control, qualities communicated more thoroughly by Ikkyu, who accepts failures to progress as not letdowns but just part of the process. They've grown to stop wrestling so intensely with the present, and they learned to take a step back and look at the big picture once in a while. [8]
Nortey Dowuona: A heavy, locked in drum shower falls, then stops as dueling guitars and bass swirl in a maelstrom, then the lead singer of tricot, slowly, makes her way through the maelstrom, which corrects itself to remain on the path, while Ikumi spreads the maelstrom out into mere clouds, with the guitars spreading towards the sun and smoothly slinking behind Ikumi back, to which they turn to see them swirl back into a tornado, which Ikumi picks up and lifts toward where the sun would be and spins it 4 times then lets it go, pushing it out into the atmosphere and further into space, where it evaporates, rocks appearing in the space debris. [10]
Juana Giaimo: Tricot is a band that I don't listen to often, but that whenever I do, I enjoy it a lot. "Makkuro" isn't an exception: the delicate guitar melodies and the unexpected drum patterns contrast beautifully with the powerful chorus. For someone who doesn't understand the lyrics, the vocals sound like another instrument that intensifies all emotions in the musical landscape. [8]
Alfred Soto: Drums, please! A song with sparkle and crunch doesn't come 'round my neighborhood often. The vocals project a wistfulness that the guitars refuse to acknowledge. As impressive as trad rock gets. [8]
Ian Mathers: Kind of reminds me of, of all bands, Minus the Bear. There's a similar kind of post rock-ish, vaguely metal-adjacent proficiency turned to surprisingly poppy ends, something that feels more complex than verse-chorus-verse but goes down very smooth at the same time. I don't remember math rock being this fun, is part of what I'm saying. [8]
Brad Shoup: Contrast this with Geiin Wa Jibun Ni Aru, or even the Tricot of T H E; they no longer need to bear down to impress. It's the not-playing that gets me the most here, actually. Specifically, the long-ass rest between the drums-only intro and the full band coming in between the one and two. This is wistful math-rock, where the vocals and endlessly unspooling guitar figures are both running up the same hill. [7]
Joshua Copperman: The kick drum has the clarity and precise timing of a sample, but the snare rings out like the song could break into 90s alternative rock at any moment. A metaphor for this song's fussy, eccentric structure that equally blends two genres. The combination of mixed meter with pop-punk riffs creates the effect of "x song but the beats are shifted" videos, only deliberate. (A version of "beats 2 and 4 are swapped" might result in "Sugar We're Going Down" as performed by Hop Along.) But my namedrops are all Western reference points - hearing the Tricot album reminds me of my own limited knowledge. TSJ contributor Ryo Miyauchi translated the lyrics, and while I'm not sure what the song is specifically about, something about "things not worth returning/leaving behind a stolen mark" makes me wonder if it's literally about Americans listening to a song like this, 'stealing' when they're not reaching deeper than surface-level engagement. "No matter what gets robbed/I won't lose a thing" might confirm this, a 'staying true to yourself'-type message on their first major-label release. But a song like this makes me want to learn. [8]

ほっとけない Types, or Yes, There Are Similarities Between Mun and Muse
I'm gonna share something that someone said to me earlier, because it... doesn't sit right with me for the main reason that I picked Ichigo.
So, a couple of weeks ago at work, I got pepper sprayed by accident trying to protect co-workers from a violent robber who was hitting them. (The co-workers being attacked were both women, and one carried Mace on her keys, and was trying to spray the assailant, also female, but taller than all of us, I'm short, as she [assailant] lunged again and I tried to stop her)
The next day, I was one of a few people who stopped a drunk man on the subway from beating up this guy in his 60s that he just randomly decided to come over and kick.
The conversation started today because I kinda bagged up my clothes and threw them in the closet until I had time, and today, I had time to treat them, so I was buying the stuff. They are soaking now in a bucket of water mixed with cold cream, which is apparently a good idea.
Anyway,this person was saying it's best to protect yourself and not get involved.
She did note expectations difference between men and women, but her point remained essentially unchanged except that maybe men should protect women from other men.
I... don't see why that matters the gender of the attacker or the attacked.
If I see someone who is essentially innocent being attacked (i.e., if it's someone screaming "Kill all [oppressed group here]" through a megaphone in some L.A. suburb being attacked, they brought that on themselves), I don't really care if it's the 140 cm 20 year old woman in my building when I lived near L.A. being attacked by the 190cm guy downstairs because she wouldn't sleep with him (she later decided me trying to help her in that incident and a few where she had no food meant I was kind, ergo, weak, and it would be funny to have these other guys *my age* who like-liked her harrass me, but that's aside) or if it's female co-workers being beaten up by a really tall violent woman, or if it's an older man falling asleep on the train and kicked awake by a crazed drunk 30 year old.
I can't just stand by and watch these things happen. I will usually try to pull the victim away and shield them if it's possible (wasn't at work) because I have arthritic joints all over and I can do more to help if I get the victim to safety than if I'm shattered into splinters and also become a victim.
But I can't just sit there and...do nothing.
And that was probably the biggest thing that drew me to Ichigo. Remember the whole "mountain of people" speech? (Mountain of X is a Japanese idiom for "a lot of X," Japan is full of mountains--it's actually why the cities are so crowded) I liked that he was realistic in knowing he couldn't save the world (so many college students are more idealistic), but he still had that same basic thing where he couldn't live with himself if he'd sat idly by. This really never changes. It never changed with me either, except as my joints went, I had to change *how* I handled it.
Now do I think he suffers for it? There's no way he wouldn't incur PTSD. Point blank, here. He's seen a lot of violence. Frankly, he--quite reasonably--seems to have it around his mother bleeding out in his arms before the start of the story. (Clearly, mondo survivor's guilt as well. I knew someone who ended up with that in real life. Ichigo has flashbacks. Ichigo becomes not himself on the anniversary. Ichigo *wants to be blamed for her death, when he was a small child and couldn't have reasonably done a thing* )
But he's also worse off when he's disempowered. I use that word intentionally. I really wish we'd seen more of powerless Ichigo. But, again, what little we see, he's quiet,withdrawn, in his head a lot when he's not focused on earning money or something.
Anyway, yeah,either way, the guy... frankly probably needs someone like what Ikumi was trying to be, but, you know,who could at least see spirits so he actually *could* talk to them about everything.
But I think a ほっとけないtype (dunno how to translate that!), now, you're just gonna incur damage. Aside from panicking and great pain because I'd never been pepper sprayed before, I've gotten blows to the face, I've gotten thrown into things, and I have PTSD from years of violence happening to me, so naturally, violence itself is triggering, but I... couldn't live with myself if I just did nothing.
And that's also key with Ichigo. He is just the type that is going to incur damage. But the damage is worse if he doesn't/can't do anything.
Barring the fact that in Bleach, death really is "just a flesh wound," his choices are really just between being turned into a child soldier/pulp (remember Tesla?) and "useless/put out to pasture," as far as he would seem to feel.
I do think he might be *too* self-effacing, if that's the right word. Does he ever seem to derive his intrinsic value from anything but protecting others (what he can succeed in doing for others)? Doesn't seem so to me.
I do feel like others-based self-worth is both something a lot of people struggle with, and something a ほっとけないtype might be particularly disposed to. It might also be something enforced on AFAB people, which, boy, if only savings account interests compunded at the rate of these problems!
Anyway, to this type of person, it's so much worse to spare oneself the flesh wound than to just stand by and watch others get hurt.
Ichigo has a doctor dad, a time-reversing comrade, and I have enough money and health coverage to get my clothes/skin/body/stress treated.
Rather, the stress part, choosing inaction would be something I would have to *live with.*
Ichigo is trying to do that, jumps at the first sign of hope he can be empowered again, and when (for a few seconds) that's taken away...do we ever see him cry any other time that's not a memory of him being a small child? I don't think so. I'm gonna guess that that's supposed to be he just can't handle it anymore. I'm actually not quite sure there.
They gloss over Ichigo's time powerless, but even though he was sorta forced into it, I don't think it would be all that different, especially for someone who derives his self-worth almost entirely from... something he can no longer do.
Could that also be why he was going into chasing money? Trying to find a new measure of self-worth/efficacy as an earner? They never expand on that. My project is different, but something to think about for RP.
But yeah, this type of person, well, it's not the safest type of person to be. But it's not like you consciously opt into being this type of person.
I don't really have a conclusion here, but this is actually what drew me to Ichigo. And what drew me to Bleach overall was Ichigo and...I have a lot of deceased family, so I like stories where the living and the dead just kinda hang out. So Ichigo and living-like ghosts was what brought me to this show.
(After writing this I realised that the advice I got today is just not something I can or should follow, although I should really be smarter about how I get involved)
(Also note, I've been exposed to violence, had to learn to fight it, and also just *alive and gaining life experience* for a good few decades. Teen readers definitely shouldn't throw themselves in fights with, say, middle age armed muggers. Rather, the teen should really go run to a brightly lit place with multiple people, like a store, and get help. The key is to try your best to be smart about how you get involved. Again, if you also become a victim, you aren't helping. Actually, after the pepper spray rendered me useless, all I could do was call for help, which was actually the best part of what I did)

I like reading magical girl manga, but unfortunately I’m not able to find that many. So I thought I’d check what else authors for well known magical girl manga have been up to outside that particular story. Mostly counting larger/more notable stories, I’m not going through every one short or series attempt that was canned after one volume.
Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon, 1991-1997)
I thought she had done practically no manga after Sailor Moon ended, but it turns out I was wrong and she does have some very short works until the early 2000s (but after that I couldn’t find anything else form her other than work different Sailor Moon projects). However most of the stuff that’s listed for her is just one shots or one or two volumes at most, and nobody ever speaks of them. The only one I know is PQ Angels (1997), which is about two alien girls who try to live as schoolgirls and are able to transform into cockroaches, but it was pretty forgettable and was apparently discontinued because of Kodansha losing some pages of it.

Has made only one longer work after TMM, Koi Cupid (2005-2008), which seems to be about 3 trainee cupids trying to become full-fledged angels. Fantasy, but doesn’t look like it fits in my definition of magical girls. Also only one volume has been published in English.

The TMM Writer, Reiko Yoshida, has been involved with writing anime starting from 1989 and continuing even today (Wikipedia lists her role as ‘script’, ‘script supervisor’ or ‘screenplay’ in works like Dragon Ball Z, Digimon Adventure, Angelic Layer, Sugar Sugar Rune, K-ON!, Bakuman, Silent Voice and Violet Evergarden). Couldn’t find any notable manga work from her outside writing TMM.
Moyoco Anno (Sugar Sugar Rune, 2003-2007)
My favourite magical girl manga! And unlike Ikumi, Anno has produced plenty of manga after Sugar Sugar Run too, but unfortunately none of it is magical girls. Or for girls in general either; most of her other work seems to be aimed at grown up readers, such as Hataraki Man (2004-2009), Happy Mania (1996-2001) and In Clothes Called Fat (1997), which feature 20-something women who struggle with various issues in their life. Sakuran (2001-2003), Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen (2013-2018) and Buffalo 5 Girls (2013) are about prostitution. Then there’s Flowers and Bees (2000-2003), Jelly in the Merry-Go-Round (1997-?) and Jelly Beans (1999-2002) which are about fashion or modeling which work with Anno’s strengths, since she’s amazing at designing clothes.

Moonlight Himejion (2007-?) is a little closer to what I’m looking for since it’s at least fantasy, but it seems to have been discontinued after one volume, but overall I could find very few works that had any fantasy elements. Which is a real shame since I’d love to see more fabulous magic outfit designs similar to Sugar Sugar Rune from Anno.
Peach-pit (Shugo Chara!, 2005-2010)
The duo behind Rozen Maiden (2002-2007) and its au stories, spin-offs and whatnot. Other than the story about fighting dolls which was pretty big back in its day they also have DearS (2001-2005), which looks like an ecchi magical girlfriend series to me, Zombie-Loan (2002-2011), which is a horror story involving you know what, and Kingyozaka Noboru (2012-2015), which has a teen girl helping a grade schooler (??? the MAL description is very unhelpful here), Wandering Wonder World (2014-2017) which is a shounen story about demons in an amusement park. Overall like with Anno their other works seem to be aimed at an older audiences and the colourful Shugo Chara! is more like an anomaly among their other titles.

Arina Tanemura
Has a lot of fantasy works with girls and magic, but I don’t count them all as magical girl series; for example I see Fullmoon o Sagashite as an idol story with fantasy elements (or maybe a fantasy story with idol elements?) rather than a magical girl one. Or maybe it’s just that I don’t care much for her works so I don’t have a lot of interest to feature them on this blog. Either way she has stuff like Time Stranger Kyoko (2000-2001), a short series that was clearly rushed to end about a princess who needs to gather 11 magic people to wake up her sleeping twin sister from an enchanted sleep, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (1997-2000) which is about a magical girl phantom thief, and The Legend of Princess Sakura (2008-2012) which is about the moon princess Kaguya’s descendant in historical Japan. Who I probably should count as a magical girl, she even has a henshin, but honestly I remember next to nothing of the first volume. Meanwhile 31☆Idream (2013-) turns the “little girl must transform into an older version of herself to become a teen idol” thing around with a 31-year-old woman who has to revert back in age to do the same.

Out of her major works only the hilariously awful (fite me) Gentlemen’s Alliance Cross (2004-2008) doesn’t have any fantasy elements and is instead about rich kids’ teen drama.
Pink Hanamori (The artist for Mermaid Melody, 2002-2005)
Only has 3 other works listed on MAL: A Princess Knight (the Tezuka one)  sequel (2008-2009), Yume Yume You You (2005-2007), a story about a girl living in her sister’s shadow discovering another world in a mirror, and My Fiancé is a Monster!? (2007-2008), which looks like a supernatural romantic comedy. Nothing after 2009.

Like with TMM’s case the writer Michiko Yokote has worked on a billion anime projects (credited as ‘script’, ‘screenplay’ or ‘series compositor’), such as .hack, Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boueibu LOVE!, Gintama and Princess Tutu, but has no other manga listed other than a .hack adaptation.
CLAMP
Everyone knows CLAMP, and they have so many well known works that they don’t really belong to a “minor works from one-hit-wonder mangaka” list, but a magical manga list without even mentioning CLAMP would be badly incomplete so here they are anyway. And they are actively bringing out new magical girl manga to the world with the ongoing Clear Card arc of Cardcaptor Sakura, a sad rarity on this list! And then they of course also have Magic Knight Rayearth, and you can see Sakura and company in their massive multiverse crossover thing Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (+xxxHolic). Also CLAMP’s absurdly incredible outfit catalogue is worth mentioning and especially Sakura’s wardrobe is such a gift to the world.

Other works from CLAMP include Angelic Layer, Chobits, Clover, Gate 7 and Kobato. A lot of their stuff has fantasy elements.
It appears that in the end my search for new magical girl manga was unsuccessful at least when it comes to these old veterans, so I must look elsewhere. I am able to find short trope-y otaku stuff, but I’d like a more straightforward story like TMM or Shugo Chara. What do the kids read nowadays? What is the TMM of today? Is great stuff being produced but just not translated to us Western barbarians, or do plenty of English versions exist but I’m just too lazy and inept to find it? Or are magical girls out of fashion and little girls only want to be idols?

Hello, any update regarding the Mia Ikumi Works translation project?? It's been a year already
Dear Anon,
I am sorry for my suuuuper late reply.
The last update for the project is dated July 2022 and I would love to take this opportunity to proper explain why.
I would like to specify / recall that the main staff working on the project is made by me and @berrychanx only.
We also took care of physically buying Japanese / Chinese copies of the mangas we are interested in translate and share with Ikumi-sensei fans during these last years.
Needless to say, we went through some problems with actually getting the material in our hands.
For example…
When we found out the existence of Mia Ikumi’s oneshot, ‘Girls Fight!’, I tried to search for it on the net. I was sure to have bought it, but the bunch I received included only the colored cover of the Nakayoshi issue where it had been published in 2004.
After that, @berrychanx found the os and bought it right away, but the item got stuck in customs.
Months later, I finally succeed in buying the Nakayoshi issue where the whole os had been published. Yay!
Secondly, we had to deal with finding proper translators for the project.
We needed people interested in working in a long term project and with enough proficiency in Japanese and Chinese for translation and proofreading.
We were searching volunteers especially for Chinese, since KoiQ scans are in this language only.
I managed to find two kind persons able to translate and proofread from Chinese to English and willing to participate in the project between the last August and November approximately.
Last but not least… me, @berrychanx and our collaborators had to deal with personal and health issues recently.
I personally had big anxiety problems during the last summer, and have to deal with unpleasant difficulties in my family and job which are still going on in the moment I am writing this post.
One of our Chinese translator got hospitalized in 2023 for at least a month, and @berrychanx too had to get through with her own health issues.

We are all people fighting with our personal demons.
Also, we all have a IRL here.
We work on the project when possible, and when our minds and bodies are ok.
Please, be kind and have mercy of us ❤

Sweet Blue Flowers, an anime review
(Disclaimer: The following is a non-profit unprofessional blog post written by an unprofessional blog poster. All purported facts and statement are little more than the subjective, biased opinion of said blog poster. In other words, don’t take anything I say too seriously.) Just the facts 'Cause you're in a Hurry! Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for Season (MSRP): 38.12 USD Animation Studio: J.C. Staff Licensed and Localized by: Nozomi Entertainment, a studio of Right Stuf Inc. Audio: Japanese Audio with Subtitles available Length per Episode: 25 Minutes on average. 21 Without Intro and Ending song. Number of Discs: 3 DVD Discs in total.   Episodes per Disc: 3 or 4. Also on: Amazon Video and Crunchyroll, a subscription based service that allows streaming for shows. Free streaming is available with ads. Bonus Features: Clean opening, TV spots, character art gallery, and original U.S. trailer. How much I paid: Nothing. I viewed it on Crunchyroll. Number of Episodes: 11 Episodes Price per Episode: 3.50 USD on physical. 1.99 if bought digitally. My Personal Biases: I actually saw Sweet Blue Flowers a while back but never reviewed it. I like other shows in the Shoujo Ai genre such as Mai Hime, Mai Otome, Maria Watches over Us, Strawberry Panic and yes, even Kannazuki no Miko/Destiny of the Shrine Maiden.   My Verdict: Beautiful. Heartwarming. Cute. Incomplete. Like most anime adaptations based off a manga, Sweet Blue Flowers makes the mistake of trying to adapt directly from the source material. Unfortunately, with already slow pacing halting to a standstill, most viewers may not have the patience to sit through Sweet Blue Flowers. Add to that Akira’s development happening later in the series, and you have a beautiful but unfinished story that’s told. When the term adaptation comes to mind, the team working behind the project has to make a decision on how closely to adapt from the source material. Too often, many creative teams take the source material as a bible and shoot from there, not realizing the act of translating from one medium to another means certain elements get lost in the shuffle and things that worked in the manga do not work on the screen. While long running Shounen titles such as Naruto, Bleach, Dragonball Z, One Piece, Fairy Tail, Black Clover, My Hero Academia, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, and others benefit from direct page to screen adaptation, Shoujo Ai or Yuri series usually have to operate on not only a limited budget but a limited run time as well. And doing a direct adaptation of a long running manga for 12 episodes can usually result in disaster. Someone once said “You can make a good adaptation out of anything, but sometimes you have to rip its guts out.” This is why series like Kannazuki no Miko/Destiny of the Shrine Maiden worked (in spite of itself, I’ll remind readers and fans of the show) since it added characterization and plot elements that wasn’t in the original source material and wasn’t directly adapting it (Thank God!). Meanwhile, a show like Sasameki Koto/Whispered Words stumbles because it’s trying so hard to do a direction 1 for 1 adaptation from manga to screen that newcomers who weren’t familiar with the manga got bored. (You want to know how badly Sasameki Koto did as an anime in terms of sales and viewership? The anime series bombed so badly, it isn’t even localized in the States and was rumored to kill the Yuri genre for the next few years.)   And unfortunately, trying too hard to adapt directly from the source material is the main thing that kills Sweet Blue Flowers. Akira Okudaira, who is an entering high school student into Fujigaya Girls Academy, becomes reacquainted with her childhood friend Fumi Manjōme whom she has not seen for ten years. Fumi is attending Matsuoka Girl's High School where she quickly becomes friends with a handsome third-year student named Yasuko Sugimoto. Akira joins her school's drama club with her friend and classmate Kyōko Ikumi, who is in love with Yasuko, though Yasuko turns her down. Yasuko and Fumi become a couple, and Fumi comes out to Akira who is at first unsure on how to act, but still tries to support Fumi's new relationship. The main focus centers on Fumi. Fumi, despite being the taller of the two girls, is a shy unsure introvert unsure of her own sexuality and sexual orientation. She deals with heartbreak after heartbreak, seeing girls she has crushes on, such as her biological cousin which she had a fling with to Yasuko, an older girl who might or might not have sexual feelings with her. Fumi’s day to day strife and her coming to terms with her sexuality is one of the more interesting struggles of a lesbian character having to see play on screen. It’s subtle but tangible. Every so often, you see the shifts in movements and physical ticks that show off how uncomfortable Fumi is and certain scenes where characters are simply talking idly hit like a truck. As I go back and re-watch the series, I lot of things that flew over my head the first time started making sense. For example, I actually related to the character of Yasuko Sugimoto, thinking she made a good pair with Fumi, only to realize on subsequent viewings that Sugimoto was actually using Fumi for her own emotional growth. It’s an interesting take on abusive/toxic relationships; Sugimoto doesn’t intend to cause harm but her own immaturity and impulsiveness end up causing harm anyway.   So when Sugimoto asks to come back to Fumi after Sugimoto hastily broke up with her and Fumi flat out rejects her, it’s just the best feeling in the world. Fumi has actually grown in her own way and found confidence in herself without needing to be in a relationship. The biggest casualty of the show is Akira. While she’s present and does have character, her development is sidelined since it comes much later in the series. As such, it’s weird how the show keeps coming back to her as though she were an important figure when the show itself covers more about the relationship between Fumi and Sugimoto. Based on the show’s advertisement and introduction, you’d expect Akira to be a bigger part of the show. So it’s unfortunate she’s pushed to the background for the Sugimoto and Fumi relationship. Worst yet, since the chapters in question were rather short and minimalist, the anime had to pad out certain scenes to stretch them out. For example, Fumi has a conversation about how to use her phone. This plays no major role whatsoever in the plot of the episode. The final episode ends on Christmas Eve as Akira and Fumi spend time looking at their old elementary school. It is at that point Fumi realizes she’s been in love with Akira this whole time. But before the two can pursue their eventual relationship, the anime series ended. Yuri adaptations do not tend to sell well and with the lackluster sales and ratings, Sweet Blue Flowers, the anime, was cancelled while the rest of the story continues on in the manga. Ken’ichi Kasai’s direction is subtle but powerful. Fumihiko Takayama’s writing takes the best of the manga and explodes it onto the screen. Takefumi’s Haketa’s music will move your heartstrings. But, the story is sadly incomplete. Unfortunately, there a little to no extras in the DVD/Blu-ray Release. Just the Opening and Ending song with no text. CAVEAT: I don’t hate Sweet Blue Flowers; it’s just that adapting a manga this slow and this subtle was always going to be an uphill battle. Add to that the short amount of content (11 episodes, not even 12!) and the high price tag, as well as Akira not getting the screentime she does in the manga, I’m going to definitely have to say wait for a drop in price point. (Again, Yu Yu Hakusho 20 bucks for 28 episodes. I can get 39 episodes of DBZ for 20 bucks. Sweet Blue Flowers is 38 dollars for 11 episodes.) As an adaptation, Sweet Blue Flowers not only does justice to its source material but at times transcends it to give the fans what they want. But, taken as its own work, taken as a simple 11 episode series, taken as meant for people who are ‘not’ fans or familiar with the source material, I can only assume they would be left with a feeling of “that’s it”? Verdict: Wait for a sale or watch it on Crunchyroll. If you’re truly interested in the story, try the manga instead.

TOKYO MEW MEW NEW VA Unit Members Check Their English Ability in New YouTube Series
    As a special program for the summer vacation period, the official YouTube channel for the TOKYO MEW MEW NEW project has started streaming a new series "TOKYO MEW MEW NEW English!" The five members of its VA unit Smewthie are learning English for their future overseas activities.
  In its first episode, they take simple tests to find out how good (or bad) their current English ability is. They have to translate their character names - Ichigo (strawberry), Mint, and Zakuro (pomegranate) - into English. Also, they have to translate short Japanese phrases and sentences into English, for example, "Ganbattane!" (Good job!, You did well!) and "Momoka wa Sono Anime ni Kandoushita" (Momoka was moved by that anime). Check out the video below to see who has the best English skills at the moment!

      As part of the 20th-anniversary of the Tokyo Mew Mew manga created by Reiko Yoshida (story) and Mia Ikumi (arts), as well as the 65th-anniversary of Kodansha's Nakayoshi shoujo magazine in which the manga was serialized, the new anime project was launched in April 2020. The new TV anime series TOKYO MEW MEW NEW is set to premiere in Japan sometime in 2022.

Serialization started in September of 2000. It was a super popular series that combined the idea of a fighting squad of 5 beautiful girls with environmental issues, and had cute characters and plot twists to keep you on the edge of your seat. There was a TV anime and a game, and when a sequel was announced there was a huge commotion. ♪

About Translations and Reinterpretations
In few classes ago we discussed a little bit about translations in manga and anime, how it’s translated in different languages losing information on the way. 
In that discussion the movie Ghost in the Shell appeared mentioned a lot and lot of classmates expressed how dissapointed they were with this new version from the States. A lot of people explained it was because the main actress wasn’t made for the main role (because she wasn’t japanese, because she wasn’t that good at playing that kind of role, etc), or simply because they thought it would be a bad adaptation of the original Masamune Shirow’s manga. 
But, What is the real problem of having a new interpretation of the same story? Would people watch the new version if it is exactly as the original story we already know? ¿Why is it so bad to have a reinterpretation of something we have seen? 
With this thinking as a starting point, I could only thinik about the stories I was able to watch when I was a kid. Lot of those stories arrive at the national TV from Japan after a translation, with new voice actors, different openings sometimes, and even with part of the story changed to make the story more “childish” according to the restrictions of the country. (For example in Sailor Moon for a lot of latin american kids the names for the five main characters were Serena Tsukino, Lita Kino, Amy Mizuno, Rey Hino and Mina Aino instead of Usagi, Makoto, Ami, Rei and Minako, the names that appeared in japanese manga).So this could be called a “reinterpretation” of stories in a smaller scale. 
Also, in another example, we could start thinking about reinterpretations of classical stories in literature or antique animated stories that are shown to us as comeplete new stories. A good example for this could be Alice in Wonderland from Lewis Carrol’s classical kid story. This story has animated and live action versions with Disney and Tim Burton, and a lot of reinterpretations in manga and anime from authors like CLAMP (Fushigi no Kuni no Miyuki-chan or Miyuki chan in Wonderland), Bisco Hatori (a chapter in the anime Ouran High School Host Club), Yu Watase (Alice 19th), Yana Toboso (in the chapter Ciel in Wonderland), Ikumi Katagiri (Are you Alice?) and a lot of other examples could appear if we make a small effort to remember. 
Considering this, then why do we have such a hard time accepting and enjoying reinterpretations of the same story? 
It could be related on how easy is for us to find the original version of an especific anime or manga, and how we can actually watch it/read it in its original version with the help of the internet. That’s how if you really like an author you can actually read all his/her work online even in the original language. That’s how the “search for what is more authentic” starts and make people dislike new versions of the same story. 
In conclussion, there’s always a continous reinterpretation of stories, with new versions, new authors or even when the stories are translated, but that doesn’t mean they are worst because they are not original and authentics, sometimes every author and every version gives a new point of view for every story and it doesn’t mean it’s not as good as the original. New interpretations can also enrich antique stories.

Regarding the post, it’s not bad, and picking a theme we see in classes make me think you are actually paying attention in classes! That’s a milestone. I don’t have much to say, regarding the Ghost in the Shell movie, I think is more that the expectatives were low and the hype they were projecting was high, and in the end, the movie floped exactly because of the reasons we (At least I) thinked would happen because Hollywood always do the same thing, just blind entertainment, and the Oshii’s “Ghost in the Shell” is not entertainment... It’s telling a stoy... That explain why Jefe en pañales made like 4 times the money that GitS 2017 in the first weekend, don’t you think so?
