Im sorry I don't know if you take asks or whatever but how do you interpret what happens in under the silver lake just cause I'm completely and utterly on an under the silver lake bullshit rant and I need opinions and you seem interested in the film (I'm so sorry I'm rambling)

Howdy! No need to apologize, my asks are always open!

“Under the Silver Lake” has genuinely become one of my favorite movies and I have a few different ways of interpreting it because I think there are a multitude of metaphors and lessons within the film. I could talk for hours about it! I’m going to put a cut after the first blurb because this will be long and have spoilers. (Also, I haven’t had the chance to rewatch it in a bit, so I may be a bit rusty on some points

First and foremost, I read UTSL as a breakup film. Sam is a man who is clearly struggling to cope with the loss of a relationship. The majority of his actions are him falling into unhealthy and dangerous ways of coping as he escapes not only a loss of love, but also a general distaste for his life as it’s quickly going downhill. It’s obvious from the beginning that he’s stopped caring about himself and his wellbeing as he shirks off all responsibilities to lounge around all day spying on women. This is what eventually sparks his interest in Sarah, someone he becomes obsessed over despite never actually getting the chance to know her. In many ways, Sam uses Sarah, or at least his idea of her, to try to answer the question of, “Why did my last relationship fail?” And in general, I think a lot of Sam’s character arc and journey is just him wanting to know, “Why?” and this is a “why” that can be applied to both the minute issues in his life, but also the bigger picture conspiracies he falls into.

So, when Sarah goes missing in the midst of him trying to process his last breakup and him using her as an unhealthy coping mechanism, it only further spirals him into his search for an answer to “why.” I personally interpreted his journey through LA as, “if he can find Sarah, then he can finally understand what went wrong with himself,” because even with every conspiracy and weird happenstance he finds himself in, his motivation remains focused on Sarah.

Now onto the surrounding conspiracies and the bigger picture, I feel a lot of what Sam faces with issues like the death cult Sarah ends up a part of, the Homeless King (and the homeless in general), and his encounter with the Songwriter are all instances that are meant to render him powerless and truly show how small and lost he is. To put it shortly, Sam is pathetic.

In the Death Cult and the Songwriter, Sam uncovers his fears of elite societies and individuals perpetuating a toxic and predatory capitalist system that render the likes of art and individuality useless and unattainable (and just the oppression of capitalism in general). He uncovers these big secrets that harm everyone and everything he has loved, yet knows that he is merely a nameless individual unable to change everything. And on top of that, he really doesn’t care unless it directly affects him and his interests. When he finds the Death Cult marrying off brides to fraudulent and corrupt men in the Hollywood elite only for them to all be entombed forever underground, he only cares because this hurts Sarah which in turn hurts him. He doesn’t take any action to help any of the other women in this situation and he clearly won’t because of his own selfish motivations. This just further drives home how Sarah was more of an obsession and a coping mechanism rather than a true person to him.

Another fascinating piece of Sam’s puzzle is the Dog Killer. Now, it’s already been confirmed by Andrew that he did many different takes of certain scenes where he played different sides of Sam’s relationship to the Dog Killer. Sometimes he played it off as if Sam had no idea who or what the Dog Killer is, sometimes he played it off as if Sam knew but didn’t care to intervene, and other times he even played it off as if Sam were the Dog Killer himself. I personally think the Dog Killer represents of multitude of things, one of those being Sam himself.

First and foremost, the Dog Killer as a literal dog murderer still remains ambiguous to me on a surface level. Why is someone just killing dogs in LA? So, my own interpretation of the dog killer strictly focuses on the metaphorical aspects of it all.

“Under the Silver Lake” is a movie that relies on the male gaze and it is very aware of that. It’s not entirely told from Sam’s perspective, but we are able to very clearly understand how he, and many of the men around him, view women, and it’s not a very kind or tasteful perspective. As Sam is obviously someone very hurt and lost due to his own actions and his last break-up, he does not view women as individuals deserving of respect. He spies on them, creepily follows them, and uses them in various ways for sexual gratification, emotional/motivational gain, and free therapy. Sometimes Sam gets away with this treatment and sometimes he does have more amicable relationships with women, but even so it’s built on a flimsy foundation of exploitation. In cases where Sam is called out on his behavior, or is not allowed to indulge in his desires, women very easily turn on him. Several times throughout the film when we see women rebelling against Sam, this is accompanied by the women directly barking at him, insinuating that Sam views these women as dogs. And what’s a popular derogatory name for women that doubles as a name for female dogs? Bitch. It’s no big jump from the symbolism of an angry and threatening dog to a defensive and protective woman to be labeled a bitch from a man’s perspective.

Is this barking really happening? Most likely not, but it’s a direct indicator of Sam’s state of mind and disposition towards women post break-up. Taking all of that information, I personally believe Sam is the Dog Killer in a metaphorical sense of him being a killer of relationships, a killer of love. He does not respect his partners, he does not respect women, he is lazy and unmotivated. Everything about him displayed in the film points to him being the reason he lost his last relationship and the reason why he is unable to healthily move on and find a new one.

On a broader level, I also view the Hollywood elite running the Death Cult Sarah gets roped into as Dog Killers. This just falls back in line with most of the men in the film objectifying women and viewing them as animals to own and control. So when these men are able to round up three “wives” at a time only to bring them to their deaths, they are becoming Dog Killers themselves.

That’s most of the big analysis I have currently because I need to do a rewatch and take more notes, but there are some other smaller themes and details that build up the characters and the story. The Owl’s Kiss is an allegory for the depression and paranoia that Sam has fallen into and how it could result suicide. Topher Grace’s character often states the obvious of what is happening while also feeding in to Sam’s delusion, serving as an enabler and a motivator. There are some times where Sam actually questions that voice and what it’s telling him to do, but ultimately never truly challenges, rather sticking to the familiarity of his paranoia as a way of making sense of things, as a way of answering his “why?”

That’s really all I have for now! I hope to come back to this and add more because I know there is more to explore and say, but I hope this all makes sense for now!!

So I wanted to share this fic idea with yall, OK so it's like a hawk x dabi x shigaraki x fem reader I think.

THIS IS NOT PROOF READ ------------------------ So Hawks is assigned to protect this girl because the LOV is after her sister, they want her to join them, and they threatened that they will kidnap her older sister, she was a student fighting against the UA when the LOV came and interpret the fight talking about how she wants to be stronger and they were going to give her that power soon after they recivied a punch in the face, so they did plan B which was kidnap her only family and kill her if she doesn't join. Hawks was surprised about all of this, because Dabi did not inform him about it, when he talked to Dabi he did not let him know that he's protecting the girl as a payback for not telling him. When he arrived at the your place which was a small apartment he is surprised, you were way too different than your sister, your sister was like a female version of Bakuguo, always fighting always yelling however you were calm very calm your voice soft when you speak even the way you moved was elegant. But the first thing he noticed was that you were blind you had a cloth wrapped around your eyes and on top you had sunglasses on, you seemed however super smart not asking too many questions and understanding the danger you were in, but you still had a soft smile on your lips. But somehow the smile seemed fake, but he didn't think much of it all he had to do was keep you company and make sure Noone hurts you, after a few weeks of living with you he got bored it's not like you were boring the complete opposite you would tell him stories from your childhood, you even mentioned that the reason your sister doesn't come to visit you was because she feels like she was the reason you're blind now, which was not true. He tried asking what you meant but you just smiled and changed the subject quickly, something he also like was you would make breakfast every morning he liked that a lot, but in the end he wanted to go out a little, he offered taking you with him, but you rejected telling him he can go ahead and leave.

Let's just say the flight did not go as Hawks planned, it was terrible, he came back to you real fucking tired and just goddam stressed, you asked him what was wrong, he's surprised you noticed, he made sure his voice sounded as friendly and cheerful as possible how did you pick up on it, you just reply with "your voice doesn't normally sound like that" So he starts to complain and somehow ends up being cuddled by you his head buried in your neck and you're playing with his hair. When you fell asleep first he carried you to your room and laied you down on the bed, he blushed a little remembering how you pulled him for a hug and how frozen up he's been, he smiled at the small memory he wants to protect you, wants to keep you safe and see more of your genuine smiles. Since then he became attached to you but you two don't have a relationship you're just friends with cuddle benefits, so there comes a time where he Had to leave you, which scared him, he gave you a feather necklace and told you to grip on it tight when you're in danger. So fast forward dabi gets teleported in your apartment, he stood taking on your small simple apartment, he found you sitting on the couch a braille book in your hands. He waited awhile taking you in, the LOV did not have a lot of information about you, they didn't even know what your quirk was, he's wondering why you wore sunglasses, and why you were feeling up the book's pages. You slowly closed the book and without him saying anything you greeted "hello there how can I help you?" in a way soft calm voice, which honestly surprised him seeing the situation you were in "you're not scared?" "not really I expected someone to come" you sounded like you didn't care, you must be really strong if you did not fear him one bit, he got his flames ready to fight. You on the other hand just took the feather necklace off, that's when Dabi noticed it "you're not calling the bird here to save you?" he smirks, you either are really strong or just really careless "if I get him here you might kill the innocent people in this building, right? It's easier to just go with you, I don't want anyone to hurt again because of me.... " you whispered the last part, he almost didn't hear the pain in your voice almost. You held your hand out "could you guide me? I'm blind" he's surprised by that looking at your hand then your face, you're coming in willingly? This has to be a trick, he believed that you were blind after looking closely he can see you had a cloth wrapped behind these sunglasses, he just said fuck it since he doesn't have much time before Hawks comes back, he grabbed your hand, they felt very soft. Anyways he gets you to the LOV missing the way your soft hand felt in his, and Shigaraki being the asshole he is just decays something infront of you to silently tell you to not try anything funny, Dabi just rolls his eyes "she's blind" it seems that the leader did not like the answer, he took your glasses and decays them, and then takes the cloth roughly off because he thinks you're playing them. All of the LOV just gasp once he took the cloth off even Shigaraki froze at the sight, you had no eyes it was straight out of a horror movie, you took the cloth back in your hands calmley wrapping it calmly back around your eyes again, Shigaraki still frozen and Dabi feeling a little bad about this whole situation, you seemed kind, but too kind, you sighed "my father got angry at my sister when we were younger, when I tried to defend her he did this to me" Now the whole LOV felt bad they had their family issues, and understood the pain you probably felt, but you didn't let it show, you just shrugged it off. After awhile of spending time in LOV you becomes good friends with Spinner, and you treated Toga as your little sister, you went along with all of the LOV except Dabi and Shigaraki Dabi would watch you from afar still not knowing what your quirk is, Shigaraki on the other hand never talked to you again. Until one night you heard a crash, you slowly walked to the sound of the

crash relying on the walls for support, you find that it coming for Shigaraki's room (Per Spinner's description) as soon as you go inside you heard him yelling at you "get out!!" "fucking leave!!" His voice sounded so broken so sad, you couldn't just leave, you crunched downand just hug him, he froze again not knowing what you're doing, hell he doesn't know why he's crying all of the sudden "I-I wasn't--I didn't do it on purpose I" and just cries harder. You didn't know what he's talking about but you assumed it was a nightmare, but before you could assure him, you felt pain go through your left arm, you screamed. Shigaraki looks in horror how you slowly start to decay and in a second the whole LOV is in his bedroom, they all watch in horror how your arm is disappearing. Dabi starts yelling "why the fuck would you do that!!!! What the fuck?!?!" Shigaraki is reminded of his child self and just crawls back, however all of the sudden you raised your right arm and dug your nails in you left shoulder and the decay stops and there's a white light coming from your hand. somehow you generate yourself to everyone's surprise. Shigaraki still had his eyes closed not really looking as he has his back against the wall, scratching his neck, you then whispered out of breath "Shigaraki its ok im fine please hold my hand" and he just stops to stare he does hold it with his thumb hovering just for a sec he felt calm before you were snatched away by Dabi, he carries you back to your room and throws you on the bed. You heard the door to your room click signaling that he just locked you in, you could hear him yelling at Shigaraki you can also hear the rest of the LOV calming both the men down, you sighed you just wanted to help not make it worse. From then on you were not allowed to leave your room often, you did explain that you can regenerate cells and that was your quirk, but they didn't let you leave one day Shigaraki came to your room to apologize for what happened and you just let him know that you don't see him as a monster and that you would like if he visited you more often, he didn't reply but you felt his hand wrap around your own for a second, it seems he was wearing gloves, you didn't comment. Another time was when you felt your door opening, at first you thought it was Shigaraki again but when listened closely "is everything ok Dabi?" "how would you know it's me?" "footsteps" you reply shortly "just making sure.... You still there" he mumbles quietly "you need a hug?" he laughs bitterly "giving out free hugs for bad guys that can kill you in a blink of an eye" "you sound like you need one" He huffs and comes over to you, one hand around your neck pushing you down on the bed getting close to your ear and whispers "don't get too comfortable doll face, the only reason we keeping you around is because we want your little sister to join us-" he stops when he feels arms wrap around him and play with his hair he just freezes the hand that was around your neck now laying on the bed. He didn't know what to do, he hadn't felt anyone kindly touch him in years, he just let's it happen not sure what was he supposed to say, he finds himself sleeping next to you he woke up in the middle of the night shocked that he had held you so tight you were just sleeping calmly he leaves immediately. Baby!Into1 x Daycare au | Intro

(ft. Bo Yuan as the caretaker of the 10 chaotic bunch, ranging from the ages of 3-5)

a/n: hello hello yumi here~ so this is the first into1 au of mine that will ever see the light of day. at first I was going to write things for it, but honestly I'm going to make it into a series with incorrect quotes to attach with it. this post will be the bios of all the babies and our lovely caretaker Bo Yuan, so enough of me babbling and I hope you guys could enjoy~

First off, we have the Caretaker™ Bo Yuan:

my mans is like in his 20's rn

wanted to open up a little day care as like side job/internship because he wanted to teach kids in the future so he was like “might as well start working with kids now!”

and so

he did it

only regretted his life decisions when his devil number 1 and devil number 2 does something bad

other times he really enjoy looking after them! and he doesn’t even feel like it’s a job!

has been thinking about taking a field trip with all 10 of them but he’s afraid: 1) he might lose one 2) he might lose himself 3) can they behave themselves

his favorite thing to do is having all of them gather around while reading a fairytale to them for nap time

or sometimes he would sing a song

he has a lot of favorite things in day care, literally having all 10 of them just there makes him happy

except when lin mo and nine is having a scream off:

lin mo: ahh

nine: aHH

lin mo: AHH

nine: AHHHHH-

bo yuan, running into the room: what’s wrong?

ak: screaming

bo yuan: why?

patrick, with his hands over his ears: TO SEE WHOS LOUDER

4 years old

very quiet, just likes to sit and read and draw

the most obedient one, and likes to follow around bo yuan

well,, most of the time

he’s played a few pranks on bo yuan like:

bo yuan: liu yu nap time is over you have to wake up

liu yu: *not moving*

bo yuan, gently nudged liu yu: liu yu wake up!

liu yu: *continues to fake sleep and not move*

bo yuan: *leans closer to liu yu’s face to make sure hes not sick or has a fever*

liu yu, scares bo yuan: WAH

bo yuan: liu yu dont do that! you scared me!

liu yu: *giggles*

likes to stretch and bend himself in odd positions

(bo yuan: everyday I’m in fear that he will snap himself in half)

kinda an introvert but once he hangs around everyone for a bit he will open up to them and fit himself in very well

likes to organize and keep things how he found them/have special places where he organizes his toys

jiayuan: *moves liu yu’s fan*

liu yu: hey! put that back!!

has really good etiquettes and never really fights or argues or bicker with the other kids

but likes to joke around and mess around with once in a while

patrick: wahhh i put my cupcakes here who took one!

liu yu, hiding it behind his back: idk maybe keyu took it?

the least of bo yuan’s worries since he’s always in bo yuan’s sight, also he’s aware of his surroundings so he actually helps bo yuan make sure everything’s okay

(bo yuan: i made a checklist for myself on the whiteboard and liu yu likes to check things off for me, he said “coloring in the boxes is fun” so now he's the reason why i get all my work done)

4 years old

riki’s best friend

super happy and bright, like a ray of sunshine

is easily scared

santa: WAHHHHH BO YUAN GEGE

really likes bo yuan, would stick on to him a lot and ask him about everything

santa: bo yuan gege whats this?

santa: bo yuan gege what’s that?

santa: bo yuan gege what are you making right now?

hangs out with liu yu and mika a lot (other than riki)

riki is older than him but would hold riki’s hand and take him around like a didi

also really likes racing with mika for E V E R Y T H I N G

(bo yuan: yeah couple days ago they tried to race who can fall asleep faster but because they kept on peeking at each other so they basically didn’t sleep till i said i’ll watch for them)

really likes to dance, every time he hears music he would start grooving around

loves learning new things, which is probably the reason why he always asks bo yuan so many questions

also least one of bo yuan’s worries, just gotta make sure jiayuan and lin mo don’t pull pranks on him

(bo yuan: well they dont really pull prank pranks, its just once lin mo grabbed a frog and started running around and showing it to everyone, but lin mo lost grip and the frog jumped on santa)

Rikimaru:

5 years old

looks like he’s 3, acts like he’s 3, but is actually 5

best friends with santa! always sticks around him and likes to tug on a corner of his shirt out of habit

bo yuan: alright everyone it’s nap time! i’ve made the beds for everyone

riki, sees his bed is not next to santa: bo yuan gege can you switch my bed next to santa? i wanna be next to santa

he didn’t start speaking till he was 4 so he often stutters when he talk and just looks confused a lot (it's because he’s thinking and formulating his words)

santa and the other kids would always have to interpret for him

bo yuan: riki I brought some snacks today do you want cookies or marshmallows?

riki: ???

santa, motioning with his hands: bo yuan gege said do you want the white fluffies or brown crunchies

riki: oh! crunchies!

squishy cheeks,, bo yuan’s favorite thing is to squish his cheek everytime he sees him

riki: gud mooning bo yuan gege!

bo yuan, squishes riki’s cheeks: ahh I haven’t seen you in so long good morning!!

nine: wait wasnt riki here yesterday??

also likes to stretch,, often seen around with liu yu and they just help each other

(bo yuan: i am afraid he will snap himself in half too)

not too much of bo yuan’s worries, besides the fact that he might get kidnapped because he’s so oblivious

(bo yuan: we were playing outside in the yard once and riki just wandered off because he thought the neighbor’s flowers were pretty)

Mika:

4 years old

also kinda an introvert, doesn’t interact with too many people

usually it’s santa that approaches him first or keyu^^

found a ukulele in the toy bin one time and wouldn’t let go of it (he claims it’s his now)

his favorite activity at daycare is when they all sing together, that’s when he smiles the most and has the most fun

the one that likes to nap the most

also likes to help bo yuan cook once in a while (mostly just having mika washing vegetables and passing things to bo yuan)

very laid back and not noisy (till he starts playing the ukulele)

often gets scared by lin mo’s sudden screams (actually, lin mo scares a lot of people, sorry to mika’s ears)

also not one of bo yuan’s worries, literally there’s nothing to worry about with mika, all the kids just likes to sit around mika and pet his head so he keeps everyone safe

(bo yuan: one time I couldn’t find any of the kids in the play room, apparently they were all in the napping corner petting mika’s head since he just got a hair cut)

Nine:

4 years old

loud, very loud.

pouts a lot

everyone calls nine cute, even the boys who are younger than him

likes to boss around patrick because he’s older

nine: patrick gimme that juice box!

patrick: you’re closer you get it!

nine: i’m older than you!

literally scared of everything

if he hasn’t seen it before and it’s living, he’s scared

jiayuan: *holds a bowl of tadpoles*

nine, several feet away: WAHHH WHAT IS THAT

the happiest when he gets snacks + real food food

also really likes to sing!! his favorite thing is watching disney movies because there’s so much music in it and he just loves to sing along

he’s not part of bo yuan’s worries because he’s literally scared of everything, but nine is really naive and would do things that the other kids tell him to do so, it’s a 50/50 on nine

(bo yuan: there was an edible decorative flower on keyu’s birthday cake couple days ago, and somehow jiayuan convinced nine all flowers were edible. so today during outside time nine almost ate the neighbor’s flowers)

Lin Mo:

3 years old

LOUD. VERY LOUD.

probably the craziest most hyper one out of them all

he and jiayuan always have something bad planned

literally doesn’t have a moment where he’s calm

constantly in bickering mode with ak

lin mo: NO IM RIGHT

ak: NO. IM RIGHT

patrick: what are they arguing about?

keyu: *shrugs*

but is also best friends with ak so he’s also calm around him

(bo yuan: yeah these two have on and off days, you can never predict it)

and also constantly naruto runs around the daycare

bo yuan: lin mo stop running!

lin mo: *nyoom*

he also once nyoomed into keyu

keyu: ow what was that for?

lin mo: you were in my way!

and now he nyooms into keyu for fun

a very good mood maker

likes to smile/laugh a lot

would calm down if you show him a movie or a cartoon

number 2 on bo yuan’s worry list because he’s the "bad influence" for everyone, also he reduces hearing for everyone

(bo yuan: i’ve secretly made a tally book on how many times i have to say “lin mo” in a concerning tone this week and he came in 2nd. he was only here for like 3 days!)

Zhang Jiayuan:

3 years old

YOURE THREE STOP SMIRKING LIKE THAT

couple months younger than lin mo but this is the real culprit under a lot of his and lin mo‘s plans

it’s just because jiayuan has a lot of crazy ideas and he says them out loud and lin mo is just like “yes”

also sometimes they are just accidents, but he's always doing weird questionable things with lin mo

got really sad one time because he brought tadpoles and put them in the fish tank and killed them since the fish went nom

but then started to constantly catch for tadpoles to feed the fishes

bo yuan: jiayuan stop, you’re killing the frog population!

jiayuan: but the fishies are hungry *pouts*

likes to fight/mess around with keyu for no reason

keyu: *sitting there, drawing*

jiayuan, with a squishy hammer: *bops keyu’s head*

but also will protect keyu if anyone tries to mess with him

lin mo: *nyooms into keyu for the 3rd time of the day* jiayuan, hugs keyu: stop hurting him!

the calmest thing he likes to do is taking care of plants, probably because he saw bo yuan spraying the plants one time and he like to squeeze the spray bottle

number 1 on bo yuan’s worry list, this child is literally not safe alone or with anyone. they were trying to celebrate keyu’s birthday and jiayuan tried to touch the candles, while it was lit, by the flame.

(bo yuan: i just got the tablets and haven’t set up children mode, so i’ll take the blame for this one. but also why are kids so good with technologies nowadays??)

wants bo yuan to add dress up into the daycare games, since he wants to dress up the other boys in the daycare

patrick: i call it, patrick fashion!

not part of bo yuan’s worries till he’s on his hunt for the hidden snacks, just because bo yuan is afraid he might hurt himself

(bo yuan: i started hiding the snacks higher up and one time i saw him trying to climb on keyu’s shoulders to grab it)

Wanted to ask about beetlelyds, sorry, I thought it was technically cannon? Like in the old comics after the show ended she grew up and married him. first of all the biggest issue faced in the whole what is and is not canon debate is the fact that there are three (four if you count the limited comics run) publicized iterations of my media

i will go over each very briefly just kidding this is going to a long answer so i will spare the dashboard with a readmore

there is the movie which im sure you dont need me to explain the plot since youre an old school fan but basically the climax is that yes beetlejuice does go for the marriage angle in exchange for stopping the exorcism of adam and barbara and his motive for this is so that he can cause as much chaos as he wants on the mortal coil but his plan is thwarted when barbara rides a sandworm into the house which promptly eats beetlejuice sending him to bureaucratic death limbo

the end of the movie features the deetz and the maitlands happily living together with lydia havign a new appreciation for her situation and beetlejuice gets his head made real small which is very funny haha 

so no in the movie they are not canon editors note the actress who played lydia winona ryder was a teenager while filming the movie she turned 17 the year it released 

the next is the cartoon which i will admit has the most grounds for being considered canon but in the end the show is about a middle schooler and her best friend who is a ghost which in itself is a pretty iffy gray area sort of thing but for a childrens cartoon to work a friendship is better than the obvious enemy status they held in the movie

anyway in the cartoon they are potrayed to be very close friends with lydia being the person beetlejuice cares about the most and honestly if you were to watch it with no prior knowledge of the media and if you ignored their massive and obvious age difference than yeah you probably would read it as a romantic relationship 

however lydia is a middle schooler and that is simply immoral

there have been writers for the cartoon who have been credited to say that a relationship is what they were trying to invoke but for obvious reasons they couldnt exactly move forward with that angle with them establishing that lydia is a child in middle school and a fully grown adult man dating a child who is in middle school is immoral and also illegal in the united states and in canada 

this isnt a good argument for whether or not something is canon and i will tell you why with one simple name and that is luke weber

if you dont know who luke weber is he was a storyboard artist on the cartoon steven universe he is known for making a lot of self ship artwork of him and the character pearl

he worked on the show isnt his material canon no of course it isnt it wasnt put in the actual publication and also if memory serves he was eventually asked to leave the project after he drew art of the shows creator giving him permission to date pearl and calling them her otp and a lot of fans hated this because the most generally accepted interpretation of pearls character is that she is sapphic so a lot of people took issue however that again is just a widely perceived headcanon it is never stated what her actual sexuality is no one in that show is because it isnt a show about that its about wait im getting off topic sorry

what im saying is what can truly be considered canon is what you see on the screen and with the cartoon they are definitely the most friendly with each other and that is why so many people in the beetlebabe shipping community take so much stock in the cartoon because it is the easiest to read the relationship between the mas romantic although that is not what the show actually provides in black and white terms

interpretation does not equal canon and in this case no matter what anyone says the fact remains that in the cartoon itself they are friends good friends yes but friends all the same

it is definitely not a show about a grown man grooming an adult and if it were you definitely shouldn’t be stanning it the extreme because grooming a minor is wrong and it is apparently a problem in the fandom

anyway if the cartoon and the movie are both products of their time and there was more leniency on content bear in mind this was the same era as notorious animation powerhouse and known predator john k who was a showrunner on ren and stimpy and he maintained a relationship with a teenager which was an open secret that nobody really took issue with because in that time being a woman in the animation industry was tricky business and your career could be ended easily if you rejected advances luckily time has moved forward and the animation industry although still full of problems of a similar nature at least people are getting called out and punished for it

you can look more into that yourself its really upsetting though

as for comics i havent been able to find good scans of them and im not willing to purchase them but in my search i never found anything about the two of them ever being married in the cartoon again because she is a child i did find a cover where he appears to be getting married and hes asking lydia to get him out of it but im not sure where the comic actually goes all i know is she is standing off to the side shrugging and looking like she doesnt really care

anyway that brings us to the musical which is set in the modern day 

in the original libretto lydia is described as thirteen but since they got an actress who was older in the updated librettos she is listed as 15 and the story is pretty similar to the movie the young girl befriends ghosts and they try to scare her family out etc etc

the major difference between the film and the musical are that lydia and beetlejuice are more like friends like in the cartoon 

she summons him to help scare after the maitlands attempt doesnt really work so he shows up and they have fun terrorizing people together however she drops him for the opportunity to perhaps get her mom back but when no one will help she goes back to beetlejuice who tricks her into almost exorcising barbara

she agrees to marry him in order to stop the exorcism and he only wants to get married so he can be alive again and cause problems on the mortal coil like in the movie in the musical he states several times its a green card thing whihc obviously doesnt make it okay but still

anyway lydia tricks him and runs off into the underworld before the wedding can happen blah blah blah she goes back blah blah and she agrees to go through with the wedding to save her friends and family with a plan to make him go away for good

theres a very tongue and cheek song called creepy old guy which points out how wrong the whole thing is but everyone is going along with it in a very comedic matter and it includes the line 

i cant believe some cultures think this kind of things alright

basically saying yeah this is very very wrong anyway they do get married and beeltjeuice is alive for like 6 seconds before lydia stabs him to death with bad art and he dies thus nullifying the marriage because death do you part etc

so in the musical no at the end of the show they are not canon because he is dead their marriage is nullified and they go their separate ways

anyway sorry about that i just need to make it very clear that these three properties are all very distinct from each other and basically all three are indeed canon since they are publicized material and arguing the validity of which one is pointless editors note all actresses who played with the exception of dana steingold were minors for the majority of their runs as lydia with sophia ann caruso the originator of the role turning 18 during the run and dana being in her late twenties presley ryan however was a minor the whole time and still is one

tldr no they aren’t canon but to the credit of some people in this fandom their interpretation isnt too far of a stretch thanks to the era and some of the writers wishing to imply a relationship between an adult and a child

i also need to address how this is all a big deal and i suggest you take a peak through my discourse tag and check out @leedia‘s blog to see some of the more harmful things done by beetlebabe shippers

the beetlejuice fandom is home to many minors after the musical came out since musical fandom is vast and the ages of its members varies and normalizing pedophilia is harmful to them not to mention the people who have been effected by sexual harassment at the hands of adults

both sides have victims of csa but one side continues to perpetuate the cycle by showing time and time again that this behavior is normal and easily romanticized in the name of coping and literally anyone who has ever been to a good and credible therapist could tell you that posting cp even if it is simulated cp isnt a really good way to cope and you can get mad at me for saying that its totally fine but and im going to remove my character veil here for just a second as a csa survivor myself i think its harmful to not only myself but many others ok the veil is back down

tldr again there is a lot of bullying and harassment going on with both sides having their own issues but there is one side whos issues run a bit deeper in my humble opinion

Hiya! I just discovered your blog and was wondering if you could help try to type me (sorry this is pretty long)

1. I’m currently pretty torn between the intuitive introverts. I was able to narrow it down to INTJ, INFJ or INTP. I’m about 97.2% sure I use Ni. The only thing that’s giving me a bit of doubt is I find myself occasionally learning for the sake of learning which I’ve found is a traditionally Ne trait. Despite this I’m still pretty sure I use Ni as when I go down a rabbit hole and start learning for the sake of learning its always about a topic that interests me or is entertaining. I won’t waste my time learning about something I find mundane or drab. I resonate a lot with Ni’s “aha” moments where the correct answer simply pops into my head or a vision suddenly seems clear or a plot holes solution suddenly seems painstakingly obvious. I also resonate with starting out with a broader range of information/ possibilities and narrowing it down to one or two things. Another intuitive thing I highly relate to is living in the future. If almost never living in the present, and a constantly fixate on the future. I have a distinct, clear, and well thought out plan for the next 20 years (give or take).

Where I run into a bit of trouble is when I try to figure out which judging functions I predominantly use. It honestly feels like I use them all (though I know you’re only supposed to be able to use two well). For example I plan out everything, and set deadlines for myself. My desk often seems really messy to others especially when I’m doing art. This isn’t because I don’t value cleanliness, but because it simply makes more sense to keep all my art supplies out rather than having to spend at least fifteen minutes taking them out and then putting them away only to take them right back out the next day. I set goals based off of easily measurable, external things such as time, or grades. I make daily to do lists that outline everything I’ll need to do in the day, and some stuff to focus on if I have extra time. With my to do list I also plan out the approximate time each thing should take. When coming up with a scientific theory, I take others opinions/theories and test them against each other, and current scientific laws in order to formulate the most probable theory. External opinions (in a scientific/ logical manner) mean a lot to me (I don’t really care about how people that aren’t my friends think of me). To me these things seem very Te. But then I’m always smiling and am a fairly warm person. I want my friends to be happy, and I want to help others. I despise emotionally driven conflict(though I love debates), and while I’m not afraid to disrupt it if it threatens my morals/ is promoting something blatantly wrong (factually or morally) I do really harmony. These seem like pretty Fe things to me. As for Fi, I rarely share my negative emotions, preferring to deal with them predominantly alone. While I may not talk about them much I also have EXTREMELY strong morals. If something is crossing them I’m not going to simply ignore it for the sake of harmony. While I tend to be private I do try to be as authentic as possible. My morals are derived by information I’ve collected and decisions I’ve made myself, rather than being derived by ‘the groups’ collective morals if that makes sense. To me these things appear to be very Fi. As for Ti, sometimes I enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. The knowledge may have no practical use to me but if I find it interesting or want to learn about it I can devote hours to it. I try and come to the most logical/accurate conclusion possible, and when I’m offering advice I may offer additional advice that takes different variables into account. The truth is really important to me as well.

2. Reading. I absolutely ADORE reading(specifically fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian books or research/scientific articles about topics that interest me). For reference there was a period of time when I had some free time and I was reading 2 or 3 books a day? Read maybe 50 books in the span of 20 days? But yeah I absolutely love reading. Just he way the book sucks you in and deposits you and a completely new world full of wonder and disaster and ugh it’s just magnificent. And don’t even get me started on impeccable character development and eeee. The way rereading a book feels like you’re reconnecting with an old best friend or going back to your childhood home and *sobs*. I also LOVE trying to predict plot twists and character deaths. Most of the time I can predict things correctly and idk it’s really fun to just try and figure out what’s going to happen before the big reveal. And the rush of satisfaction you get when you’ve guessed something right- it also helps me brace for character deaths (sorta. For example I knew *the* death in the final empire [by Brandon Sanderson] was coming since nearly the very beginning [I had my suspicions since the moment vin was introduced] but I still sobbed when the character died. [a tad off topic but what caused me to cry wasn’t the death itself but another characters reaction to it. This is often the case I find. A death of a character I love leaves me feeling empty but what typically gets me to cry is the others reactions- for thus reason funerals usually make me cry. I should also add that I only cry when I’m alone. I’ve cried around people (that aren’t my parents) a grand total of 1 time.]

Uh and daydreaming. I’m almost always daydreaming. Ie. if my brain was a search engine or whatever one tab would be reality and I would consecutively have at lest 20 other tabs open. Some of then playing videos (daydreams) others supplying music(if I’m not actively listening to real music my brain cycles through songs I have memorized. Occasionally does this with book scenes too if I’m bored [yes, I memorize some of my favourite scenes, word for word, so I can play them like a movie in my head when I, bored) others containing random info (just me thinking random stuff) etc.

3. I guess how to solve some problems? Wether it’s a math or science problem, or an argument between friends, figuring out how to solve things has always been something I’m decently good at. Math and science just. Make sense. And then with issues between people I’m good at looking at different perspectives (even ones that I don’t agree with) and playing out different scenarios/ possible outcomes of different approaches. This lets me come up with a solution that will successfully solve the problem with the least amount of negative ramifications involved

4. Hmm maybe being present? I honestly feel like life is passing me by and I’m just immobilized on the sidelines. Im so far into the future that I kinda forget to actually *live* every once in a while.

5. Honesty? Truth? Morals? These topics are all really interesting as they can be kinda subjective. The line between honesty and cruelty is so small. What is truth? Cause while yes, we have some set truths (such as the earth is orbiting the sun) so many ‘truths’ are simply subjective and completely depend on ones perspective. And morals my goodness. The stormlight archive is a really fun series that plays around with things like what is justice? And honour? I won’t get into it now but it brings up so many really interesting questions regarding morals.

6. Perspective . I think perspective is such a fascinating thing. Just. Different opinions. Seeing the world through completely different lenses. Interpreting the same thing in utterly different ways. When toying around with an idea I find it really fun to try and imagine opposing perspectives. While I can find different perspectives really interesting, they can also well... get on my nerves to say the least. Sometimes someone perspective is just? So blatantly wrong? And has absolutely no factual evidence backing it up? And part of me wants to just just scream and it would be so much easier if everyone just. Assessed the facts in front of them instead of making wild accusations or whatever without anything to support them. But yeah overall I think perspectives are really cool and they’re part of what helps to make the world diverse and life so much less interesting without different perspectives.

The future. I’ve found a bunch of my friends find thinking about the future stressful but if I’m being honest I find solace in thinking about the future. Having things planned out and knowing what I intend to do/ where I want to go takes off so much stress. I lowkey live in the future and I honestly cannot wait till it comes, and I achieve my goals. While I might be a bit scared the future excites me so much more than it’ll ever scare me.

7. Maybe add some more stuff about the judging functions and feelings and thinking etc . I absolutely adore science and math. I literally do math for fun. I’m currently aiming to get my PhD in astrophysics.

Not sure if this is relevant at all but my biggest (harmless) pet peeves are my grandmother’s door stopper (it always gets stuck in the door and then u can’t get it out and the door won’t close properly- I have an unhealthy amount of hatred for that thing AHAHJSEJKSMDJDJDJJ) and when people say some variant of “you did good”. Like nO NO YOU DID NOT DO gOoD. YOU DID W E L L (Anyways theres my little mini rant).

I’m my friend groups therapist (sorta). While I’m really not good with words and recycle the same three responses I always let everyone know that I’m here for them and they can talk to me without judgement etc. While I really don’t know what to say or do I try my best because I care about my friends and want to help them. I love them and so I want them to be able to be happy. Im always smiling (though this is more so because people don’t ask me how I’m doing when I look happy than because I’m genuinely happy. Most of the time I’m he farthest thing from that). I’m a pretty warm person who’s always happy to help, however I’m very introverted. I haven’t had a single conversation with the majority of people in my class (I’ve had a convo with maybe 5. Talk to 2 regularly. There are 26 people in my class). I never express negative emotions (with the exception of stress- I panic intensely in the 5 minutes immediately before taking a test as this helps me to completely turn off my nerves while I’m writing the exam. I may also make a joke or two about my negative emotions with close friends). I should also add that when making decisions I value logic more and think thinks through thoroughly, examining the pros and cons etc. While I take feelings and emotions into consideration when making decisions they’re more like an additional variable to consider rather than the main driving force that determines my decision. If I’m feeling really emotional and I need to make a decision I will postpone deciding until I feel more levelheaded. I’m really not impulsive in the slightest.

You also show a Te preference - goals based on external metrics, to-do lists for daily tasks, logic based on the outer world (external opinion). Hello, dear!  A lot of this depends on how the person being asked feels versus the intention behind the ask versus what’s a good faith or bad faith discussion.  If it’s a bad faith discussion–ie, if the person asking is only there to be an asshole, who isn’t really interested in your answer–my response is pretty much, “[posts a gif of the elevator scene] YEAH I DON’T KNOW WHERE I GET THAT IDEA FROM.” because they’re not looking for an answer and I don’t need to justify one.But if someone is looking for an honest answer and is genuinely open to listening to others (which can be very hard to determine sometimes!) then I would say that, FIRST OF ALL, they’re fictional characters and we’re here to have fun, it’s not that serious.  Nobody deserves hate for which fictional characters they ship!SECOND, they’re adults and we actually get to see them age out of the Master/Padawan relationship.  We get to see Obi-Wan respect Anakin’s boundaries.  We get to see them interact as peers and best friends, rather than only just as teacher/student.  We see that dynamic right in front of us and so saying that they can never be shipped because Obi-Wan was his teacher deliberately ignores that Anakin SURE FEELS JUST FINE SPEAKING  UP WHENEVER HE WANTS.  It’s fine if someone doesn’t want to ship the two of them for themselves because of this!  If someone out there feels, oh, they were teacher and student or feels that they can only see the two as father and son, those are perfectly valid interpretations for those people!  They are just as right as someone who ships Obi-Wan and Anakin!Shipping fictional characters is about us, not about the idea that Obi-Wan and Anakin are real people, and that means exploring the aspects of them that we are interested in and speak to us.  That’s the ultimate point of anything in fiction–to make us feel things, to make us think about things, to give us tools to examine ourselves individually, to explore ideas in a place that’s not the real world, to give us something that satisfies us, to just have fun with.  And if that means you want to explore some fluffy Obikin smooching fic or kinky sexy fic or wrenching heartache fic or fixing all the problems of the GFFA fic, that is what fiction is for.But what you’re asking about is people who give others shit about what they like and, honestly, the real truth is that you’re probably never going to be able to convince them.  George Lucas or Dave Filoni themselves could come knock on our doors and tell us Obi-Wan/Anakin romantic feelings were canon and many antis would still be angry about it and say how wrong it is and hate on anyone who shipped them.  You cannot convince other people who don’t actually want to change their minds, there’s no magic combination to unlock what some have already decided is inherently wrong.  We can only decide for ourselves what we like and what we want to interact with others on.I can quote a dozen moments from the movies, tv shows, books, comics, games, and interviews that put Obikin in a romantic light, there’s no shortage of stuff that lends itself to them as a pairing!  I can (and probably have orz) write multiple essays on how so much of the galaxy’s fate is founded on Anakin’s relationship with Obi-Wan!  I can write more essays about their dynamic, how they really know each other better than anyone, that that’s the whole point of that fight in ROTS, that nobody knows these two as well as each other, that Obi-Wan has loved many people, but Anakin has always been the great love of his life, that Anakin’s choices hurt because of what they do to Obi-Wan just as much as what they do to Padme and Luke and Leia.  That they have defined each others’ lives!But it’s never going to matter to someone who doesn’t want to see them as a valid choice for someone else. And you have to decide for yourself if you want to continue being around those friends, if they’ll still be your friends if you talk publicly about what you like, or if you need to make a separate blog to interact with fans or even just lurk quietly in Obikin fandom.  All of those options are fine for what you yourself need!  If you feel you can’t openly join us, I’m sorry to not be able to interact with you, but I understand!  If you come to us under a different blog name, WELCOME!  If you openly join us, there’s a lot of really fun stuff going on around here, I hope you have fun with  us!!  And, honestly, I find that Obikin hate isn’t nearly as bad as it sometimes seems–maybe it’s just because I’ve blocked the worst people or because I don’t read people who hate it, but I almost never see it and I almost never get any anons telling me horrible things for it.  It might be different where you are and I don’t know the people you hang out with, they might give you hate for it.  But just generally hanging out in this corner, I don’t see much of it anymore!And I’m very, very much with you.  One of the reasons I ship them so hard is because I love their dynamic beyond just wanting them to smooch–honestly, my very favorite fic in this fandom is one where they aren’t even meant to be a pairing, but instead it nails the dynamic between them so well that I don’t care I JUST WANT THEM TO BE TOGETHER, I JUST WANT THEM TO BE IN EACH OTHERS’ LIVES.I love them because they know each other better than anyone, because they run the gamut of dynamics, that they can be cute and happy and hilarious but they can also be angry and heartbreaking and hurtful.  I am a sucker for pairings that explore a whole array of what’s between two characters, from happy to sad, from hilarious to heartbreaking, and Obikin has that in spades.  I’m also a sucker for pairings that have wildly great chemistry, which they do in everything I have ever seen them in, they always spark off each other and they have all these delicious issues to explore, there’s such incredible love there that can never be burnt all the way down, no matter how hard Anakin tries, and sometimes that means I want to explore Anakin’s d/s kink and sometimes that means I just want time travel fluffy fix it fic where they never even smooch and EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.  ♥__♥
