honestly that s4 premier where Steve does a crazy helicopter stunt and Danny naturally plays the role of the Concerned Spouse™ while Catherine stands awkwardly to the side is so indicative of that entire situation.

even when he was with Catherine it was Danny who went with him to the hospital, who lectured him about putting himself in danger while checking him for injuries, brought him clean shirts, told him he is loved and somebody always has his back, etc

Danny is the one who took care of him and met his emotional needs while Catherine was a low-key friend-with-benefits AND THAT'S LITERALLY HOW IT WAS WRITTEN. how was anyone supposed to buy the natural progression to Steve and Catherine's relationship is marriage when he already has a whole spouse/life partner in Danny?

it's clear neither of them want it to be anything more because Catherine is only happy to step aside and let Danny fuss over his husband and Steve is really only comfortable being vulnerable with and taking comfort from Danny anyway.
