Monster High G3 Romance

First of all I just want to say that if you ship Cleo x Frankie and Clawdeen x Deuce then I totally understand that as some people are just able to enjoy G1 and G3 for the separate generations that they are, or maybe never even saw G1.  That being said.

Monster High G3 is honestly so frustrating to me because on the one hand I’m so glad they decided to have a canon queer couple!  But I’m just . . . so baffled by their thought process and line of thinking.  They could have chosen literally ANY OTHER GIRL to pair with Frankie and I would have been deliriously dancing for joy.   And it’s bad enough they broke up Cleo and Deuce, but then to pair Deuce with Clawdeen, of all people!?  It just doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.  I feel like it was a mistake to break up the already beloved, established couple of Deuce and Cleo, and that they should have chosen different ghouls to pair with Clawdeen and/or Frankie.  A lot of people already got to thinking of Clawdeen as being queer, since the creator liked the idea, and I think the G3 writers could have done better at reading the room (or they did and just didn’t care about G1 fans.)

I get that this is a new generation and that some things are obviously going to change.  And that G3 is supposed to be for a new audience.  These are just my thoughts as an OG fan, and I feel like the G3 writers didn’t take the time to appreciate and understand G1 dynamics, and that they didn’t really care how G1 fans might feel about this.

I want to end this by saying that I think there are some things that were done well with G3 and some positive changes.  (i.e., Twyla being ND, Frankie being NB, and I think some of the music is pretty good.)  But the romance to me was a letdown and I feel frustrated for being so disappointed when this is supposed to be such a positive thing (a canon queer MH couple.)  I’m happy for all the people who do like Cleo x Frankie, I just wish it could’ve been a queer pairing that I could have gotten on board with as well.

obviously we've got the canon boys - dieter (i see him not giving two shits about pronouns and is happy to be referred to in any way) and oberyn being bi, and silva being gay. i love that he's played multiple canonically queer characters, and i never see people taking advantage of that?? ok not never, there are a few that acknowledge these three love men and i love those writers to death, thank u for your service lol

ok and we've got the ones i believe are straight, however:

joel is straight, but is completely comfortable with himself. has gone to a gay bar or two in his time and was very flattered when men would hit on him/buy him drinks. also, i could see him just like, not feeling anything sexual/romantic after tess. i do think he and tess were romantically involved; i don't think it was just sex/physical. it's really not something i see him caring about after her. so he's gotta be somewhere on the ace spectrum.

i'm kind of on the fence about javi p, because i could see him going one of two ways; he's either experimented and came to the conclusion that he's just more attracted to women than anyone else, or he's near violently straight. and that's either a combination of the time period he's in, or some other reason. but ultimately i think he's straight.

Franky: Trans dude. If he can make himself a robot body, he can make himself a robot dick. Also he's Bi. He never mentions any of this, and is surprised that his crewmates didn't already know.

Zoro: Has legit never thought about it. He has no fucking clue what his sexuality is. He just does what he wants in the moment.

Sanji: There's a solid arguement to be made in canon that my dude is not Cis. (There's simping, and then there's getting euphoria for being in the body of your hot female friend.) I personally HC him as bigender. Also, no way is he actually into ladies.

Homestuck:

Vriska: Trans woman, transitioned super young. Will fight you if you misgender her.

Karkat: Not being able to feel certain quadrants places him on the Troll aromantic spectrum. Troll sexuality is different and my HCs should reflect that!

John: Bi, and doesn't understand that Bi isn't the default. Everyone finds their male friends attractive, that doesn't mean they want to date them! (he is wrong.)

Aradia: Lesbian in red and pitch quadrants.

Roxy: Pan, and uses she/her + Neopronouns (I'd think it/its and nya/nyas fit her vibe.)

I actually don't headcanon Mr. Kitty as intersex because Ms. Cartman totally replaces Mr. Kitty whenever something bad happens, and that explains the inconsistencies.

Bi Owen is arguably canon, if played for laughs. (I know the shows old, but yikes!)

I know Wayne is canonically the best Ally, but Harold knows more about LGBTQ+ history than everyone else put together and will happily talk about it when asked. He has helped at least 3 people figure out the name for their sexuality.

I saw someone posting about Aroace DJ, and it has not left my brain since.

Bi Zoey! She's not open about it, due to not wanting to be the only openly queer person in her small town.

Scott is gay, but he also knows very little about sexuality. It takes him embarrassingly long to figure it out.

Jasmine is questioning her sexuality, and Sammy (I will not call her Samey, I refuse.) was her first known crush on a girl. Still love her and Shawn though.

I know Bi Phoenix is the prevalent headcanon, but I am a Gay Phoenix enjoyer. His fling with Dahlia reads as Comphet to me.

Danganronpa:

Gonta's relationship with gender in canon is so ??? no way is he cis. I'm giving him the Genderqueer label, but Cisn't. I don't think he's quite figured it out though.

If I am despised for liking Bi Tenko, so be it. It makes sense with what we see of her backstory, and no way am I allowing my fave to be a stereotype.

I am a trans Chihiro enjoyer, but fuck you if you think the people that want to use Chihiro's canon pronouns are transphobic. The whole thing is stupid, and people should be able to have fun with the character without discourse

YEAH, it has just become canon! there was this theory floating around that the new Frankie (from G3, as in, the live action musical + the companion Nick show + the new dolls) would be non-binary and use they/them since the actor chosen to play them, Ceci Balagot, is a nb trans man that uses he/them pronouns. There was a lot of hype about this since Frankie being non-binary or some flavor of genderqueer is a common headcanon in the fandom.

Then a popular member of the Monster High fandom commented in a stream that Frankie would use they/them. It was a rumor, but that person is reliable for leaks, so it was given credence... THEN character profiles were dropped and Frankie's used "they" to refer to them! AND THEN Nick released a clip in which Frankie introduces themselves to the class this way:

"Frankie, non-binary. They/them pronouns."

Nobody says anything about it least in that scene. The closest thing to a reaction we get from Frankie being open about their identity is... Clawdeen smiling and nodding, probably relieved that MH is queer-friendly since Clawdeen was also recently made canonically queer (she's a lesbian!). So. That's it. Nothing weird or shocking about it, Frankie is just a non-binary teenager with a fun hairdo. Their gender is introduced as nonchalantly as the fact that they're made out of bits of corpses and a sickly teal blue, and I really hope that the movie as a whole -and the cartoon after that- is as casual as possible about its queer rep.

its insensitive to reimagine disneys tiana as asian, not because asian people dont face racism or cant enjoy cooking or didnt exist in 1920s new orleans- but because tiana is the first and still only black disney princess and was written and designed as such. her race informs and deepens her writing and her struggles, her love for her dad and specifically wanting to validate a jim crow era black man's sacrifices for his family, her connection to him and her community through her cooking when they all struggle to keep food on the table. similarly mulan shouldnt be rebranded as african american, not because black women couldnt exist in china or never crossdressed to join the army or dont face misogyny- but because mulan is a folk hero of historical chinese legend and as mulan, specifically cannot be divorced from that background. (also, frankly? the early white princesses arent really as well written for the most part, and their culture of origin is virtually never taken into account aside from visuals in their development, if that).

thats what ticked me off so bad about the monster high reboot. nb frankie was so cool and an asian draculaura was so fun but then they just... took away the black girl? and by extension, her sisters and thus ALL the black girls and like, dude not cool? nothing wrong with her being latina but being afrolatina is a different experience than being african american. afrolatinas deserve rep but that doesnt mean they shouldve taken clawdeen from african american girls. then there was some back and forth as to where specifically draculaura's family is from, and lagoona's origins vary from source to source dolls vs movie vs tv too and you just really feel the lack of effort and cohesion in the writing rooms. it really is just all just numbers on a chart, quotas to be filled there.

even with shows like winx where its ambiguous at times and kind of a raceblind take at others, theres so little for ANY of us that redesigning without that in mind becomes poaching. why would you take when ive been given so precious little? why would you want to change this one gift from people like me that lets me know i'm seen and loved? sure, other people deserve to have that too but if they want to borrow then take those who have so much they wont even miss it?

Like it's so fucking weird to me!!! And GOD I wanted to say something about gen3 Clawdeen but I wasn't sure if I was "right" or if it was my place to say but exactly!! Being afrolatina is wonderful and they deserve representation too but it is still ultimately a different experience from being black american and they shouldn't have taken that away from black girls! I'm glad that mixed kids have her as rep now but they shouldn't have taken her away!! They very easily could've made a new character to fill that role instead!

AND YES to the winx point!! At the end of the day, it doesn't matter that some of the girls races or ethnicities are more ambiguous, they still have Canon races and people shouldn't be taking that away and giving it to someone else. That's not how representation works! Ever! Like if someone redesigned Aisha to be asian, that wouldn't make me happy or give me More representation. All that would be doing is taking away representation from black people! Same thing with Musa, Flora, Nabu, etc.

It also feels So fucking scummy when a white person's excuse is just that they Personally didn't see a character as their canonical race/ethnicity and that's why they changed it?? Like I don't give a shit if You personally don't see Nabu as an Indian man. That doesn't change his blatant coding. Same with characters like Flora who are more ambiguous. It doesn't matter if You Personally don't like her being Latina. She is. Fucking deal???
