I've returned from my supply run earlier and I'm happy to say I shall be making not one, but TWO whole recipes from the neopets cookbook! Mostly it's just that the one I really wanted to make was very simple, and would have left me over with ingredients that the second recipe uses, so it works out perfectly lmao.

Anyway I shall now speak of the Neopets Cookbook and what I think of it in between two rounds of Sakhmet Solitaire.

The Neopets Cookbook came out last year and it was one of those things I: 1) never expected to happen 2) didnt even consider being a possibility 3) makes so much sense

They only tell you how to make like 3-4 omelettes but it's really just omelette+toppings so you can be creative.

Neopets has a gajillion food items, and while a good chunk of it is questionnable, theres a lot I wanted to eat irl as a kid lmao. I'm happy that all recipes in the book are actual neopets food items rather than just like, neopets-shaped cookies or whatever. I do kinda wish the book was bigger to have more recipes in it. The recipes for main meals are a bit sparse and you will mostly find snacks and desserts.

This cookbook does expect that kids will be picking it up, so the recipes are on the simpler side, and there are several warnings throughout the book about being careful with knives and to not burn yourself. If you're an experienced cook, you're not gonna learn much or discover anything new in this book, but if you've just started cooking on your own (or have kids) this could be a really good starter book! The recipes mostly count on the presentation to be fun rather than the use of unique ingredients and techniques and stuff.

You go you funky little gay neopets

There are many many recipes that include tips on how to make meaty recipes vegetarian or vegan, on how to make vegetarian recipes vegan, or how to make a lot of the recipes gluten-free.

It's super colorful, has a TON of photos of the foods, and specifically at least one photo for EVERY recipe! Which you may discover through my journey with these books is, for some gods forsaken reason, not always a given! So the Neopets cookbook gets a gold star for the beautiful giant photos of the food on every page, and the cute neopets art spread throughout. There's also some templates you can photocopy at the end to decorate with.

The two recipes I'm gonna make this week are the Hot Dog Burrito, which I might do tomorrow and the Space Quesadilla, which I will do……either wednesday or thursday depending on my mood lmao.

tl;dr:

GOOD: Great for beginners! Photos on every recipe! SUPER colorful! Really fun presentation! Fun for the whole family! Great party food ideas!

LESS GOOD: Recipes on the simpler side! Tends to depend on store-bought items! (which is fine but less stuff is made from scratch) The food might not be mindblowing but it'll be fun as heck!

I could be misremembering. but thinking back to neopets one thing that strikes me as interesting in retrospect compared to other browser-based pseudo-mmos is it didn't have, like, an energy or stamina system, right? the limiting factor for what you could do in a day was just your little kid attention span, and certain things that took however long to renew, like the giant omelette being daily

And the flash games only let you submit a score to earn neopoints 3 times a day.

String Feeling approaches a poetry of applied post-scarcity. In this intoxicating tragicomic epic, a kind of utopia of pure imperfection is imagined sidelong. String Feeling soaks up abundance in the inimical, the crystalline, and the samey. This is a social world whose connective tissues are ofc ablated and cuffed, its skins glitter-slit and unstable, yet nonetheless so tender and safe that even sickness can be cherished for its specific textures.

Abundance is partly political economy, but partly mystic practices, a “seeing also,” often droll and self-deprecatory, that reveals the wriggling roots of the real. Through such a space falls a hundred page filament. What is it? What kind of fool gets this good at poetry when we don’t even know what poetry is yet? Get in the top of this poem and slide down to the bottom. The poem also claims it is OK not even to read it at all and to go practice carpentry or simply to smash your thumbs into your eyeballs and encounter Cassopoeia. String Feeling is a work supremely horny and wise.

Though in part String Feeling sips this abundance from cyberspace, it is addicted to being offline. Foraging a collapsing planet’s moonless forests lit by an iPhone open not on the lamp app but on a moodscroll of pals’s Insta stories, plus multiple tabs of rabbitholes and maybe a monsterhole. dont remember if ive posted these neopets worldbuilding thoughts before so im posting them Now cause im thinking about em again

i love trying to incorporate some of the seemingly incongruous gameplay elements of neopets into the world- i think that theres a number of programs for neopians who dont have a lot of money, which mostly take the form of “dailies” and “games”. for example of some of the dailies, the giant omelette and giant jelly really exist in the places where they are, but if you dont live there to pick it up in person (maybe if you DO live there you can actually like, choose what flavor you want), you can claim your free omelette or jelly online or by mail and it gets shipped to you- if you get a flavor you dont like or is borderline inedible then its like, well, sorry, guess you can sell it or whatever not our problem try again tomorrow!!!

the games work like the flash games on neopets- you can play them either online or at public arcades, and theyre free to play. a lot of them are either advertisements from various companies or demos for games that you’d pay money for the full version of, but you’re paid for playing them well, so its a way for people with less money to keep themselves afloat by doing a relatively easy and ‘fun’ activity. the games can be fun but people who play them because they need the money tend to view them more like chores. some people do get really into them though, and you get mailed trophies and avatars (maybe theyre little magic animated badges? not sure yet) for getting high scores on the leaderboards!! theyre linked to your neopian citizen id so theyre hard to illegally sell or steal

me from like 7 to 15 years old: i want to be a millionaire on neopets!!! time to get all of the right cheats remembered for all the right games, stock up my shop frequently and try to rip people off on the neopian stock market lmao so i can build a mansion neohome in faerieland for my neopets and get a faerie paintbrush to paint my lenny faerie and be all fancy!!!! i’ll be a neopian entrepreneur in no time 😎😎😎💸💵💰💰💰

me now in my mid20s: yo, fuck millionaires and billionaires.fuck being a fucking entrepreneur and entrepreneurship (and by extension the idea of a side hustle) as a whole. fuck capitalism. i hate the stupid need to have “entrepreneurial” skills for everything and to always make money etc. fuck it all man. and plus, neopia had the world’s worst imaginary economy by far, anyway. remember bread was literally like 150 neopoints??? bananas were like 250 neopoints and every jelly or omelette ever on there was either free (from the giant jelly or giant omelette) or like 5neopoints. like what a whacked out economy lmao. but then again, the real world economy is just as fucked up now anyway lmao. i won’t be surprised if bread ends up costing at least like $20 by the end of this decade tbh.

one of my great passions at this point in my life is not so much exploring weird internet phenomena so much as tumbling headfirst into them. idk what it is, but something about the like...permanence and pseudo-anonymity of the internet, and so many people’s willingness to do...bizarre shit on it, is just??? thrilling to me. i think a big part of it is that i’m a 90s baby, so i was just sort of sitting around playing neopets while some real buckwild shit was going down, so reading/listening to the bullshit that was happening while i was visiting the giant omelette intrigues me to no end.

literally just earlier today i was telling @malum--in--se about the great silent hill wiki circumcision meltdown of 2015, which is a perfect example of the weirdness i’m talking about...empress theresa is also super good.

i went into psychology for a reason, and that reason is i am ENDLESSLY interested and amazed in the weird shit human beings do. the internet lets us all see that weird shit in stunning hi-def, lol. if y’all are like me, you GOTTA check out the “down the rabbit hole” series by fredrik knudsen on youtube (AND the related/spinoff??? series “the warrens” with him and jabroni mike).

Being a Neopets veteran has some pretty wild moments like whenever I visit the Giant Omelette there’s an imprint in my brain that activates upon seeing the page and my soul momentarily reverts to a 10 year old. Like, normally I don’t eat much egg in one sitting but when I see an omelette a small part of my brain goes “grab a slice and put some bbq sauce on it, that’s the shit”.

Defenders of Neopia is a popular feature of neopets requiring you to battle and defeat certain challengers in the Battledome! There are currently 2 series which have their own comic strips and trophies to be won. The first Defenders of Neopia series contains 17 challengers who range from easiest (first mission) to hardest (last mission). Unconverted Neopets. Before Neopets were converted into customisable creatures, there was nothing but static GIF images that served as your pixelated companion. Things on OC instagram/social media accounts bc why not

(It’s bc I was listening to my sib talk about this one wannabe “socialite” who basically scammed everyone and their mother, but it got me thinking about instagram anyway???)

Also this got SUPER LONG so I’m throwing it under a cut. OCs included in this post:

Azukni, mention of her kids, her giant pet bird Lt. Green has his own social media account, her brother doesn’t really. Rakheshi, Xyraan, Fauli, Arif, Nalakii, Slovir, Lei’ti, Drelan, his AI child ALIS, Howlite, Davi, Wanwo, Ying Zii, Kara Wren.

Kara definitely runs warriormando.

Azukni - nearly entirely motivational quotes, along with family photos. She’s one of those Instagram mommies who puts her kids in super cute outfits and gets pictures of them grinning and laughing, and eventually she gets enough followers where she’s instafamous enough to get sponsorships from companies who want to sell their kids’ fashion line.

(bonus: her kids go on space neopets. Elanii is somehow ridiculously competitive about it, but Kadryd is just there to get infinite omelette and jelly and play mini games.)

Lt. Green - has already had a space twitter account in the past, when I still used twitter to any extent. Content wise, it reads something like probirdrights and hungry_birds back when it was nothing but unintelligible keysmashing. Which means ridiculous and without any sense of grammar or spelling.

Coshbyss - has made one (1) on his twitter account that hasn’t been active for years at this point. It’s hard to tell why it hasn’t been deactivated/labelled inactive at this point, and it’s very likely he lost the password too.

Rakheshi - runs a tumblr blog that’s JUST horrid puns and dad jokes all the time. Most of the time he creates his jokes + stories, he does reblog a lot of dad puns + dad jokes as well, and he has definitely made posts that generally started out with, “back in my day...” But he uses it to like. Not berate the younger generations, but serve as a warning? Like a “learn from my mistakes” sort of thing.

Xyraan - instafamous fashionista, model, socialite. Has ridiculously perfect photos all the time. Does she even have a bad angle? (The answer is no.) Photos include lots of outfits of the day, even if it’s definitely far too extra to be considered everyday wear, perfect matte nails holding something expensive, gifts that she’s gotten, selfies with friends that are ALSO perfect. Occasionally has a selfie with whoever she’s seeing at the moment. Maybe a few make up vids.

Fauli - don’t really talk about her anymore but she definitely has something (maybe twitter?) where she posts pics of her adorable service exoboar and occasionally mental health PSAs from the POV of a doctor. Actually, I think she’d have a youtube account.

Arif - doesn’t have one, or if he does, he doesn’t post on it and it’s probably one of those accounts that are barely active enough to be considered an active account, and no one can trace where it was sent from.

Nalakii - I... can’t imagine her having any sort of social media. Maybe she collects receipts for call outs on other Sith, but she would do so very privately so she can prove it without a doubt that Lord Whats-Their-Face isn’t actually working for the Empire. Or something like that. Anything that would help crumble whatever system exists.

Slovir - Also one of the toons I can’t imagine having a social media account. Or maybe he’s got this obscure myspace account that he hasn’t touched in forever.

Lei’ti - Space twitter, social activism based. Might have a youtube and have mini-lectures about activism as well.

Drelan - Github account where he helps people with their coding and also uploads tutorials in the most popular coding languages that exist in Star Wars. Is actually really good at teaching too, cuz he’s used to explaining things in layman’s terms. Probably fairly well known when it comes to the techie/coding side of the galaxy, but otherwise... Who’s Drelan????

ALIS - is a more sophisticated version of aiweirdness - aka that blog that gets an AI to name things like guinea pigs, paint colors, etc. Is actually run by an AI.

Howlite - Youtube chef. Channel consists solely of cooking foodporn and reviews on certain food brands, kitchen utensils, appliances. Specializes in Chiss fusion food. I’m kind of imagining it like those Korean food fusion trucks, except more refined since he works for himself and doesn’t run a food truck. But lots of spicy fusion foods :D

Davi - Also has an instagram account, though this one is less lux and more neon and outlandish. Definitely not sophisticated/elegant compared to their best fwb Xyraan. Probably has two accounts - a personal and a work one.

Personal one has lots of clubbing pix and videos, selfies with the bartenders at the bar they always go to (loud, proud, get used to it). Occasionally has pix of fistfight aftermath. Definitely uses lots of capslock in their captions and way too many hashtags.

Work one is their informal portfolio - pix of their work after they finish a piece, also designs for clients who want a very specific tattoo, etc.

Wanwo - Twitter account where he just liveblogs his life pretty much. He does use discretion when it comes to more classified things - eg most of his time as Outlander. Definitely takes pix of when he goes camping with friends and/or family, and honestly, those pix are so aesthetically pleasing, it’d make my city-born-and-raised ass want to camp.

Ying Zii - He might be a photographer as a hobby, now I think about it? And would focus on nature based photos - capturing moments that are otherwise unseen or unnoticed or that pass by too quickly.

Kara Wren - Definitely runs the warriormando blog on space tumblr. The grammar structures they use would definitely sound better in Mando’a, but the point isn’t the grammar structures but the message. Whether they run the blog seriously or ironically, is not clear. Probably a mix of both.

Otherwise, they’d maybe run a camping/nature aesthetic blog/instagram.
