College wasn’t in sight, nor even a real job but Jared knew what he was doing okay? During the first summer after graduation, Jared and his family did their annual trip to Kentucky to spend a two-week vacation with his maternal grandparents. Despite being in the middle of nowhere, Jared always enjoyed the yearly vacation out in the sticks and made the most of the time away. However, Jared tended to make his own fun while away from home and fun that year came in the shape of a hot, hopelessly romantic very senior ex-Navy vet called JR.

Every Old Town’s Just Your Past Burning Down by whisperedstory. Explicit, J2, 41k words. Summary: The world ends and those who survive are left with chaos; cities and towns are in ruins and there's a shortage of food and an outbreak of diseases that soon lead to panic and violence. With nothing keeping him in Texas Jensen decides to leave, wandering back roads and wilderness with no destination in mind. His path leads him to a secluded farm in Wyoming and a ragtag group of people. There, he ends up finding more than he dared to hope for: a home, friendships, and maybe even a chance at love with Jared, who Jensen is instantly drawn to even though he can't quite figure him out. My thoughts: I loved the devastation in this fic and then the slow soft recovery of a small group of survivors. The group dynamic gets stressful for Jared as the leader of their troop and Jensen’s there for him and ahhhh yeah that scene just got me in the feels. I’ve added this to my Desolate Post-Apocalypse reclist.

my thoughts: Yay fairy tales and animal transformation curses. Cat!Ed is hilariously and endearingly in-character and Stede’s inexplicable, increasing fondness for the creature just makes you want to roll into a little ball and make lovey noises. Added to my favorite OFMD fics.
Renaissance by Fyre. Explicit, Gentlebeard, 25k words. Summary: Ed heard the gunshot and the following scream when he was busting out of the barracks stores with a sack of food. Panicked. Familiar. He was running before he even realized he’d stepped on the guard and dropped the bag of loot. Running in the little shoes was a bugger of a thing, but he ran anyway, almost turning his ankle more than once, out into the dark, out into the woods, away from the barracks. https://ao3.org/works/40485996
my thoughts: Really well-written and lovely fix-it fic with charming and feel-good character development, romance, and reunions. Added to my favorite OFMD fics.
Laid to Rest by mauzymorn. Explicit, Harry/Eggsy, 84k words. Summary: After the chaotic mess that had been V-Day, everyone's got to learn to get back on their feet, right? Finding out Harry's alive does wonders to that end for Eggsy - that is, until ghosts from the past rise up to ruin it all. How could Harry not have seen this coming? Archnemeses that can't stay dead seem to come with the territory of being a spy. It's too bad that this particular ghost isn't one of Harry's... It's Eggsy's.

my thoughts: I am such a sucker for traumatized and past!Rentboy!Eggsy and this is a really amazing long fic of PTSD and recovery with Harry being there for him AHHHH so good. Added to my favorite Kingsman fics recs.
Dulce et decorum est by Moorishflower. Explicit, Dreamling, rape/noncon warning. 9k words. Summary: "This one is a special case," Burgess says. "He is a war hero. Do you understand? You will be on your best behavior. You know what happens when you are not." Two years into his imprisonment, and Dream of the Endless has not given Roderick Burgess what he wants. Yet if he cannot have back his son, then he will have whatever else Dream has to give, and sell it to the highest bidder: body, powers, and all. Jesus fucking christ Morpheus crying into Hob’s chest while he's inside him and Hob being perplexed bc that's not typically how these dreams go was sooooo, omg. This fic of chock-full of really disturbing sexual abuse and torture trauma but it’s so harrowing and emotional, brilliantly written with a violent happy ending. I mean, when Hob rescues him… fuck, man /cries/. This fic was amazing. Added to my favorite Sandman fics reclist.

To give the OP of the previous post a break, sort by kudos is extremely effective in a few situations:
- what is the fandom VIBE, which characters and pairings do they like, what’s their story specialty (is there a lot of media fic like early Avengers MCU days? Is this Star Wars, the home of the monster time travel fixit fic where characters slip between eras? Is this fandom afflicted with being used as an AU in other settings, like poor His Dark Materials? Is this early season Supernatural, where the fandom is split over which taboo they’d rather break - Wincest or J2?)
You need to do this research because this is how you work out what filters you require so you can look for the fic you actually want to read. Maybe you vibe with the popular stuff! (Lucky) Maybe you’re instead only interested in a small subset of the output (me and the Hunger Games, where I really only care about stories regarding Victor interactions with the machinery of the Games. I want the adults searching for ways to adapt and rebel within a system they’re trapped in).
- kudos search to find what’s popular once you slap down an extensive set of include/exclude filters (this is far more calibrated to finding stuff to your taste, but you can’t do it effectively until the search before tells you what you need to exclude).
- the initial search also helps you discover what Extremely Popular Fic that you despise is essentially a warning sign when you see it in someone’s bookmarks.
- Bookmarks! Bookmarks bookmarks bookmarks. Searching by bookmarks gives a set of fics that skew slightly more to rereadability than a general kudos sort presents. However if you’re working with a Very Old Fandom with lots of fics published on AO3 in 2010-2014, it’s going to be less effective, and you’re potentially better off doing a time period bounded search or a comments search.
- search by comments will also sometimes point you towards the corner of the fandom where the Olds hang out and the people who gossip/theorise in comments. This is helpful if you are also an Old.
- also find someone who writes stuff you like, mine their bookmarks, repeat.
- go into the bookmarks of stories you like and search through who has bookmarked it. This takes more effort, but ideally what you’re looking for is someone who’s had an AO3 account for at least several years, has a bookmark list in the 3 to low 4 figures, and (if you’re lucky) leaves comments or notes or personal tags on their bookmarks.
3 figs means they bookmark the stuff they really want to reread, not everything, but there’s also enough there in your fandom that you might find something new. Long term accounts generally mean they’ve been around long enough to understand fandom trends and bookmark in several fandoms, which helps you calibrate if you have similar tastes faster. Rec notes of some sort tells you WHY they like that fic and can talk you into reading something you’d otherwise skip.
- God tier: someone who you know and trust their taste is already in the fandom and bookmarks for recs. Go to them, filter their bookmarks to the fandom and find The Best Stuff. (This will sometimes result in getting Things You Would Not Read Otherwise, but when you’re an Old and you’ve run into this person in 6 previous shared fandoms and you always enjoyed their crack_van recs/Delicious back in the day you’re in pretty safe hands)

As the year comes to a close, almost, I just wanted to take some time out to say thank you to everyone who reblogged, bookmarked, shared, liked, read, left kudos and comments on my fics. I’m very lucky to have found myself as a writer within a community of really nice, genuine people from all over the world.
I love writing. I really should be spending time on my novel, which is unrelated to J2 but here I am, publishing a fic a month about these two yahoos who have really gotten under my skin. What can I say, I love them. There is just something unending about J2, no matter what other people say or do, J2 are eternal. As ships go, the aesthetics are heavenly and the chemistry of an almost 20 year friendship are the gifts that keep on giving. And with that, my brain will not stop until every trope, every occupation, every situation has been explored with J2 at the helm.
This year, Jared has been a lighthouse keeper, a multi-media management employee, a ghost, a Christmas tree-topper, a vampire, a hooker and a porn star in training amongst other things. Jensen has been a vampire too, a Greek soldier, a book-store owner, an ice seller from the 1920’s and a virtual reality coder. I keep them busy, is all I can say.
There is just something magical about creating worlds centered around the two most beautiful men on earth. I have a new fic lined up for the new year but I am going be (reluctantly) taking a break which is good because Christmas is fun but bad because I write literally every day of my life. I’m sure I’ll survive it.

THE LOVE LOCKER
Jensen Ackles buys storage units for a living, it's a lucrative business which has made him a comfortable amount of money. One thing he learned on the job is that one man's junk is another man's treasure. People leave all manner of things in abandoned lockers; money, comics, designer clothes, sports equipment, antiques, books and sometimes (maybe just the once), people.
THE PURPLE IRIS
In 1926 Louisiana, twenty year old Jared Padalecki has been forever searching for something to fulfil him. The youngest of four sons born into a rich and privileged family, Jared is ignored by his mother, father and brothers who think him wild and believe him to be of no use to them. In a desperate bid to inject excitement into his life, Jared spends his formative years seeking thrills but finds nothing that suits his character, until he comes of age. Jared is a late bloomer, lonely and questioning his sexuality. Through self-discovery, Jared opens himself up to the world in the most intimate way possible, attracting the attention of the mysterious 'iceman' and a rich older friend of his father's who takes advantage of Jared's vulnerability and loneliness.
FOREVER SEVENTEEN
Jared Padalecki was well-traveled for a sixteen year old and had lived in many different countries around the world. His passion was history and joining his parents on archaeological digs, standing on the sidelines and watching as the past was slowly revealed. When Mr. and Mrs. Padalecki decided to take on regular jobs and settle down in Santa Cruz, it gave Jared his first taste of high school in the US. With only two weeks until summer break, he had little time to settle in and even less time to make friends to keep him busy during the summer. However, on his very first day, Jared was taken under the wing of the very mysterious but shockingly handsome Jensen Ackles. At seventeen, Jensen had a worldy air about him and an intelligence to match Jared's. Soon, they became insperable and during that crazy hot summer, they became eternal together too.
GLOW IN THE DARK STARS
Have you ever met a terrible person and wondered why they did the things they did? What happened to them that turned them into a bad person? Were they born like it? What kind of trauma led them to become such an a-hole? None of those questions are answered here. Instead, what you will find is what happens to terrible people when they realize that they’re terrible. Jared Padalecki is young, not particularly dumb (actually pretty smart, eventually) and definitely full of come. He’s also full of himself too. When his car-crash of a mother announces her marriage to Jensen Ackles (lol), Jared actually couldn’t care less but Jensen is harboring a secret. Mmm, I wonder what it could be?
BERRY PIE
1969 - the summer of love for young people all over the world, the moon landings and the last year of the swinging sixties. In Jared Padalecki's small world, none of that figured as he battles to make sense of himself and a girl called 'Juliet' in an unloving home. The Padalecki farmstead had always given the impression of a happy home; it was beautiful, the heart of the community and the family were well-respected. Jared had always felt a little different to what was expected of him and most of the time, his life and future felt hopeless and carved out for him. But there was something about him that said determination as he quietly and privately tried to bring 'Juliet' to life, the other part of him, the girl he so very often needed to be.

When Jensen was fifteen, he was selected by the Gods and the elders of the Sacred Army temple in Thebes to one day fight alongside a same sex lover as part of the three-hundred strong company of the most beautiful men in all of Ancient Greece. His looks, strength and sexuality was noticed by Zeus but the Theban council elders were hesitant to enlist him, worried that his peasant upbringing would not be the right fit for the army.

However, living in a fantasy-land can lose its shine when human beings forget to live in the real world.

LOVE this one. supernatural gets cancelled after season 8 and is bought by HBO... and you can guess what happens next. it’s excellently written and super funny with angst to satisfy + characters that feel like real people (granted, slightly insane people. but those are the most fun.) jensen spends most of the fic having a small breakdown and it’s hilarious. this one is the closest to your prompt out of all of them, and i urge everyone who likes j2 to read it!!
