Gender Politics and Social Media Conflict: The Case of Cassie Jaye

In the age of digital connectivity, navigating discussions around gender politics on social media platforms has become increasingly fraught with tension and hostility. The experience of filmmaker Cassie Jaye, as highlighted in her TED Talk, sheds light on the challenges individuals face when confronting entrenched beliefs and engaging with opposing perspectives. However, Jaye's experience is not just about personal growth; it reflects broader issues of media bias, online hostility, and the need to foster a culture of digital citizenship.

Jaye's journey began with a documentary project aimed at exploring the Men's Rights Movement—a topic often steeped in controversy within gender politics. Despite her feminist background, Jaye embarked on a year-long journey, interviewing a total of 44 Men's Rights Activists (MRAs) to gain a deeper understanding of their views. What she discovered challenged her preconceptions, leading her to reevaluate her own biases and assumptions. However, upon the release of her documentary "The Red Pill," Jaye faced a backlash characterized by smear campaigns and protests, reflecting the influence of groupthink within media discourse surrounding gender politics. Despite her intention to spark constructive dialogue, Jaye became the target of a vicious smear campaign, with individuals protesting outside theatres chanting that her film was harmful to women. This hostile reaction illustrates how entrenched beliefs can lead to knee-jerk reactions and attempts to silence dissenting voices. This phenomenon is not isolated to Jaye's experience but reflects a broader pattern of online hostility that poses a significant threat to digital citizenship. As Thompson (2023) warns, online hostility can result in psychological and physical harm, reinforcing the subordination of marginalized groups and impeding their online participation. Moreover, gendered cyberhate, as argued by Jane (2018), exacerbates existing digital divides, hindering individuals' ability to engage in productive online discourse and exercise their digital rights.

In response to these challenges, fostering a culture of digital citizenship is essential. Instead of expecting not to be offended, as Jaye suggests, we must embrace the imperative to truly, openly, and sincerely listen. After all, equality should not be about punishing the other side, it should be about lifting each other up.

I have nothing to say right now still processing everything that happened and trying to get my head in the right place lol.

Well that’s a lie, not nothing:

- Maiya?! Oh my god, she has absolutely ramped it up these last few years, her high notes and just her voice in general was so strong and insane

- Millie did a newer characterisation of Boleyn with more of a sarcastic rather than ditzy take and honestly the woman is the whole package now it worked great (my friend I dragged with me came in dreading Millie’s ‘British accent’, she knew nothing about six but had seen a video of dlyh on the one show, came out saying the green one and her song was her favourite and she liked the accent as she was funny. Boom.) she also did a great like.. I know nothing about music notes but she did a high note in a harmony then leveled it up like two things higher while doing it which was sick and got a WOOO from me, I think it was in the ‘maybe it was because of his six wives’ harmony near the end, she went w-i-I-VES x

- Aimies AYWD climax was revamped also, she did a very short and angry ‘never ever’, then ‘enough be enough’ was very vulnerable and tired, I thought I was great

- The other three last did it very recently and I’ve seen them live before, but once again Natalie was perfect and the emotion of heart of stone is just insane, Lexi fucking killed it and the crowd hyped her and Nat so much (I love how much she works the costume after the reveal, someone moved their head so my friend missed the entire bit before ‘as you were’ and had no idea what was going on, god she missed out really xx). I think - THINK jaye j might have had a sore throat MAYBE because I think she struggled with literally one or two notes in no way, only really noticeable if you proper analyse it and have heard it from her many times, but she still fucking went off with her riffs and her more low scale notes were so rich it was gorgeous.

I couldn’t actually comprehend I was watching them while I was watching them and still can’t now so I’m just sat here confused so need to go to bed now bye xx

Chapter 6 - Kahaani Kya Hai?

After having that almost breakdown at Kiara's house, I stopped talking to her. It's not that I wanted to be a brat and hurt her, but I didn't want to relive those moments again. Whenever I had to remember that talk, it makes me cry. So, I thought, to cope, I would stop talking to her. In short, I was trying to avoid her. The keyword is trying. 

One evening, when I was finishing up some work in my office, I took a look at my office and the state of it. It was cleaned and everything was immaculate, and I like to keep clean because it gives me a sense of peace. But I knew, even though my mind was anything but clean, and dirt-free. 

Not what you are thinking, perverts. 

My mind was never at peace. It was either filled with work, family, friends and what was happening with them or thinking about Jug. 

I never thought about myself. There was never the need. 

Just before I have to leave, I received a call from one of my very close friends, and a text:

None of them knew I had been travelling to Goa for a number of years but never went to see my friends because they would pity me. And that's the only thing that I don't want from them. Pity. 

After 5 mins, I sent a reply back:

I had my guitar stored in one of my wardrobes, so I went and took the guitar and started searching for a place for practising a couple of my songs that I had written years back. 

I got out of the office, and by then, it was pretty dark. I roamed around for a while, till I found a huge room with a chair in between. 

It was gorgeous. You could see the light from outside emitting in the room, giving a nice glow. 

So, I sat down, and started singing one of my favourite songs, forgetting about my own songs:

Once I finished singing this song, I started singing Tauba Tumhare Yeh Ishaare from Chalte Chalte. 

After that, I felt at peace. The moon was shining in the darkness of the night, and the stars were dancing along to please the moon. It was heart-stopping. I took out my camera and took a picture of the sky. Thenceforth I went to my office and put my guitar, my written songs and my camera in their respective places. Hidden from the world. Then, I left to go home. 

After I reached home, I changed into my sleepwear and went to sleep, thinking what was Fatima's drive to make her like this. Kahani kya hai?
