Ivan: I’d like t’see him say somethin’ with a broken jaw.
Bruno: You’ll get fired…
Ivan: Bah.
[gleeful squealing]
?: Doggy, doggy, doggy!
[Bruno chuckles as a tiny being barrels straight into Oreo, arms flailing excitedly]
Ivan: It’s a good job he’s friendly.
?: Does your doggy have a name?
Bruno: He’s called Oreo.
?: [gasps] Like the cookie?!
Bruno: Exactly like the cookie.
Ivan: Where y’parents at, bud?
[Ivan’s question remained unanswered; the small child far too busy making a new, slobbery friend]
Bruno: He reminds me of you.
Ivan: Pfft.
Bruno: Wanna steal him?
[Ivan snorts, shaking his head]
Bruno: Are your mom n’ dad around, lil’ dude?
?: Momma’s here-.. she’s a slowpoke!
[frantic footsteps]
Jessie: Jude! What’ve I told you about talking to strangers?!
Jude: But-…
Jessie: But nothing! Sorry, he sees a dog and its jus-.. Ian?
Ivan: Uh-.. Ivan.
Jessie: Ah, I remember now…
[Ivan tried to speak, but it felt like a shard of glass had lodged itself in his throat]
[Jessie shifted nervously, practically answering Ivan’s unspoken question without being asked…]
Jessie: Erh, maybe we should talk-.. are you busy?
[Ivan shook his head, too stunned to reply]

Fiat Lingua Top 10 for 2022
It's been a good year over at Fiat Lingua, the once-monthly conlang journal that's been posting steadily since September, 2011. I created Fiat Lingua over ten years ago with the idea that it could be something like the Rutgers Optimality Archive: A place where conlangers could post work that either they wanted to showcase, or work that was in progress. We've had tons of contributors over the years, and some standout work I'm really proud of.
Behind the scenes, we have a number of metrics available to us, and one of them allows us to know what the top posts are over a given amount of time. So, for fun, here are the top 10 visited posts for this year (though, note, the numbers for the December post will be down a little bit, since it didn't have a full month. Still, though, it's incredible, so if you get a chance, take a look at this full novel Jim Hopkins wrote in his language Itlani).
NUMBER 10
We have a tie...
"Moya Abugida" (June, 2022) by Carl Buck: A detailed description of how to write the unique abugida of the Moya language.
"Die Wichtigkeit von Conlangs in Medien" (November, 2021) by Jonah Behring: A German language article on the importance of using authentically created conlangs in films and television shows.
NUMBER 9
"Wóxtjanato: A grammar" (January, 2022) by Jessie Sams: A conlang by the amazing @quothalinguist about a culture whose planet has suddenly and unexpectedly acquired a second moon.
NUMBER 7
We have a tie...
"Names Aren't Neutral: David J. Peterson on Creating a Fantasy Language" (March, 2019) by David J. Peterson: This was an article I wrote for an online magazine, but then the magazine went under, so I reclaimed it and put it up on Fiat Lingua. It's about why coming with "random" names for sff can often prove problematic.
"Tone for Conlangers: A Basic Introduction" (April, 2018) by Aidan Aannestad: A lot of conlangers are interested in having tone in their language, but don't really know how to go about it, and this is a great introduction.
NUMBER 6
"Afrihili: An African Interlanguage" (April, 2014) by William S. Annis: Afrihili is an a posteriori auxlang from the late 60s that uses Bantu languages as its source, and it is fascinating! One of my all-time favorite auxlangs, and William provides a wonderful introduction.
NUMBER 5
"An Itlani Wedding Blessing" (August, 2014) by James E. Hopkins: A lovely wedding blessing Jim wrote for, if I remember right, a friend's daughter who was getting married.
NUMBER 4
"Dothraki & the Nostratic Super Family" (February, 2015) by Charlotte Peak: For her MA thesis, Charlotte wrote a paper on how Dothraki could fit into the theoretical Nostratic super family. A fun read!
NUMBER 3
"Patterns of Allophony" (April, 2015) by William S. Annis: Definitely one of the most popular papers on Fiat Lingua, William illustrates graphically a number of very common sound changes.
NUMBER 2
"Slides for Linguistics 183: The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention" (September, 2018) by David J. Peterson: In the summer of 2017 I taught a class on language creation at UC Berkeley. I uploaded all the slides I used in that course as one massive .pdf to Fiat Lingua.
And now for the top viewed article for 2022 on Fiat Lingua...
NUMBER 1
"A Conlanger's Thesaurus" (September, 2014) by William S. Annis: This is consistently the most accessed article on Fiat Lingua, and I don't expect that to change. The article is relatively short, compared to the information and use you can get out of it. William Annis details ways in which languages relate words to other similar words. For conlangers who struggle either with coming up with words that are different from English in meaning, or who struggle with coming up with words at all, this reference article should prove very useful. Using the word maps in this article, you might be able to come up with words you never dreamt of before, but words which could exist in some language. A great resource for conlangers who are desperately trying to break out of the influence of their L1 or L2!
* * * * *
And that's it for 2022! I'm looking forward to posting more conlang articles next year. If you are a conlanger, a conlang-researcher, or conlang fan who has something to say in .pdf format about a conlang or conlanging in general, please consider submitting something to Fiat Lingua! We take any and all articles related to conlanging in whatever form you have them. I'm also happy to help you think up ideas, or refine those ideas you have. There is no strong review like in a fancy journal: I just want to get what you have up. I'm especially in interested in hosting personal conlang stories—stories about how or why you started to create a language, or your experience creating your own language—personal stories that are often lost, but are so vital, as there is an absolute dearth of literature about conlangers! If you think you have even the seed of an idea, please get a hold of me! I want to share as many stories and ideas as I can.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to singer-songwriter Kip Allert, Louis Armstrong, Richard Belzer, The Billboard Hot 100 (1958), Moya Brennan [Máire Ní Bhraonáin], Terri Lyne Carrington, Dick Cummings, Herb Ellis, Frankie Ford, Václav Matyáš Gurecký, Brett S. Harrison, Elsbeary Hobbs (The Drifters), Ben Holland, Joey Huffman (Soul Asylum), Larry Knechtel, Kishore Kumar, Harry Lauder, Kenny Malone, Max Middleton, Ricky Nelson’s 1960 “Poor Little Fool” single, Cliff Nobles, Jessie Owens’s Olympic leap (1936), Pink Floyd’s 1967 PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN album, Elvis Presley’s 1956 “Hound Dog” single, Prince’s 1984 PURPLE RAIN album, David Raksin, Paul Reynolds (A Flock of Seagulls), Klaus Schulze, Maureen Starkey, Mark Stock, Timi Yuro, and my friend, a songwriter and great gospel singer Monette Newsuan. In the late 90s/early 00s we performed together frequently and recorded a flurry of projects, including her phenomenal solo album DON’T LET A DAY GO BY. She also appeared on my recordings as well as on recordings with Don Hess, The Word2Soul Project, and Davy Jones (Monkees)—who said Monette was one of his favorite singers. There are many Monette recordings I could share—she’s featured prominently on Davy Jones’s take of “When All Else Fails” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/when-all-else-fails (we had a group photo from this recording session, but I’ve regrettably lost it). Meanwhile, HB MN and God bless your ministry and lifting up your voice!

Bringing Home The Gold, Chapter 4
Word Count: 1.7k
Warnings: manipulation, jealousy, mentions of smut, drugging, underage drinking (18 year olds)
He didn’t even place.
You smiled to yourself, knowing that every time Lance saw you with Andretti it messed with him. Every kiss and flirty glance. How Andretti blew you a kiss before he started. Everything.
And when Andretti won the gold in both events, Lance was livid. The self-proclaimed god of gymnastics was forgotten by interviewers as they rushed to see Andretti and talk to him about claiming two golds consecutively for Russia.
“I bet he bribed someone,” Lance growled angrily as he talked to some of the other Team USA teammates. Hope tried to console him and he put a hand on her shoulder, “thanks babe…it’s sweet that you care so much.”
And of course, she preened at the compliments.
“Aren’t you going to say anything, Jessi?” one of the guys asked.
“She won’t say anything bad about her little Russian boyfriend,” he sneered, stering the converation towards you, “would you, Jessi? I bet you helped him.”
“How could I possibly help him, you asshole?”
“Jessi!”
You raised your brow at Hope, “What?”
“At least show a little compassion.”
“Jake and Tyler didn’t place either, and we aren’t babying them.”
Reed rolled his eyes as he leaned against the wall, “I think Jessi’s right, Lance. You’re overreacting.”
“You got the silver in the bars and bronze in the rings…”
“Yeah. And I know that Andretti did better than me. And so did Wei. You didn’t do better than either of them. Or me,” he reasoned, “the judgement call was right, so get over yourself and stop crying about it Tucker. We still have horizontal bars and the vault in the next few days before we get a break. We need to refocus.”
“Go fuck yourself, Reed.”
“He was being such a crybaby,” you laughed to Casey, “I mean, I get it, I guess. Not placing sucks, but the other guys didn’t place…and they were all trying to ride his cock.”
“All of them?”
You frowned, knowing that you had just accidentally admitted that the other girls on the team were now trying to get into Lance’s pants as well.
“Shit…Casey…I-“
“It’s fine...I guess,” she muttered, “I mean…it’s not like he’s my boyfriend anymore.”
“He’s a disgusting pig,” you said quickly, “I wouldn’t ever do that to you…you know that, right?”
“Right.”
“But I do want you to meet someone tomorrow…”
“The Russian?”
“He’s really great, Case…he-“
“Are you forgetting about destroying Lance, Jess?”
“What?” you asked, “What are you talking about? Of course not. We’re going to take that asshole down. I ju-“
“It just seems like you’re so focused on this Andretti guy…”
“I think he might be the one, Case.”
“We’re eighteen, Jessi…I’m sure your ‘the one’ isn’t some Russian gymnast.”
“You thought your one was Lance.” You froze, silently slapping yourself mentally. The words had come out way faster than you thought they would, and you didn’t have time to process them before they had slipped out, “Case…I-“
“It’s fine,” she mumbled, her voice sounding a lot more sad, “I-I gotta go. Mom and dad want to go out and see the city more. I’ll see you tomorrow, I guess.”
Before you could answer, she’d hung up and you were left over the dead air.
“She thinks I lost focus,” you admit softly to Andretti. He frowned and wrapped his arms around you, “am I a bad friend?”
“You’re not a bad friend, moya kukla,” he said with a shake of his head, “you are focusing on the Olympics. You pulled your third gold medal out of nowhere…I’m proud of you.”
You gave him a soft smile, “I-I followed your advice for my routine…”
“I noticed.”
“Andretti?” you asked. He pulled away enough to look into your eyes, “she didn’t even come find me after the event…she rejected my calls…I’ve got three gold medals and I can’t even get my best friend to return my calls.”
“Do you want me to talk to her?”
“That won’t help,” you sighed, “she thinks you’re the problem. She thinks I won’t destroy Lance because my heart is with you.”
He bit his lip, “your heart is with me?”
“Okay…don’t laugh,” you warned as you playfully hit his chest, “I-I just feel something with you, alright? You’re more important to me than the medals I won…”
“I feel things for you too, my little doll.”
“Is that why you told the Russian interviewer you were my boyfriend?”
He smiled, “you don’t know Russian.”
“Ivana told me,” you smiled as you bit your lip, “said that you told the interviewer that it didn’t matter who won to you, whether it was me or Ivana, because you have found your girlfriend at the Olympics, so it’s either your country or your heart that has the gold.”
“You remembered all that, huh?”
“Memory like a steel trap.”
“Well, Miss. Steel trap what do you say that we take care of you immature problem once and for all, and make your friend happy by the time the Olympics end?”
“How am I going to do that?”
“Do you trust me, moya kukla?”
Your heart raced as you knocked on the adjoining doors. There was a silence on the other side that had been there for the better part of an hour since Lance had gotten back from the event and you were suddenly doubting whether or not he’d actually been in there.
You knocked again.
“Fuck off, cunt!”
“I’m sorry about today.”
“I said fuck off!”
“I want to make it right, Lance…”
You swallowed, nervous at how silent the room was. And then you heard his footsteps padding over to the door. When he opened it, his breath hitched in his throat at the sight of you. You were scantily clad in nothing but a lacey lingerie set, a bottle of cheap booze in your hand. Lance’s brow raised at you, “What are you doing?”
“What do you mean?”
“What happened to your Russian boy toy?”
“You were right,” you pouted, exaggerating your sigh as you looked to the gymnast. He gave you a blank look and you turned away, cradling the bottle, “I-I’m sorry…it was stupid to bother you…I just…I thought we could drown our sorrows together. You know…after what happened today.”
“Your little Russian soldier dump your uptight ass once he got enough golds under his belt?”
You nodded, adding a sniffle in for good measure, “Yeah…said that Ivana was more adventurous…I just…I don’t know a lot about that stuff, and it makes me nervous...if I'm being honest...I'm still a virgin.”
Lance took a few steps into your room. His eyes narrowed at you, "that other night...I heard you."
"We faked it. I was jealous that you were sleeping with another girl when I knew it should be me," you admitted. You felt his hand trace down your curves and he squeezed your ass from behind you. You fought the urge to cringe, instead choosing to turn to face him, "L-Lance."
"Just need a bit of practice," he encouraged, "nothing to be ashamed of."
“Well, maybe…you could show me…”
Lance smirked, the smile stretching across his face as his hands trailed back up your chest.
“Take a sip, baby,” he whispered, pulling the booze from you. He tipped the bottle back and you let the warm amber liquid burn down your throat. He poured a little too much for you to swallow and it rolled down your chin, between the swell of your breasts. He was quick to lift you up, wrapping your legs around him with one hand as his tongue found the liquor, trailing back up your body until it reached your lips. You shivered and let out a small moan. He smiled, “you like that, baby? Like how my tongue traces those sexy little curves?”
You nodded and took the bottle from his hands, pouring some into his mouth. He swallowed it with a groan and put the bottle on the night table. Grabbing your hair, he pulled you towards himself in a kiss.
You felt his erection through his tracksuit pants as he ground into you, his cock twitching against your lingerie. Laying the two of you down his mouth quickly attacked your breasts, his tongue laving over the lace.
“Wait!”
He looked at you, your nipple partially sucked into his mouth, “What is it?”
“I-I wanna go slow.”
He growled, rolling off of you, “I’m not here to waste my time, Jessi…if you’re gonna leave me here with blue balls by the end of the night, I’m not staying. Don't get me wrong, sweetheart, you're a sexy little thing...but I'm sticking my dick in you if I stay.”
“No…no…I mean, I want to take care of you, Lance,” you purred, trying to get the two of you back on track. He raised his brow once more and you ran your hand down his muscular chest, “let me give you a full body massage…with a happy ending…and then…maybe, if I’m a good enough girl…you’ll give me what I need.”
He took a deep breath, the smile reappearing on his lips, “and what do you need, sweetheart?”
“The god of gymnastics to fuck me so good I forget about that Russian piece of trash,” you purred, leaning in to kiss him once more. He grinned and you straddled him, sliding your hands under his shirt to touch him. You moaned, closing your eyes and began to pretend that he was Andretti, “you feel so good. So strong…I wanna touch you, Lance…I wanna feel you inside of me, making me scream your name.”
“Yeah?” he asked. You nodded sliding your hands back down his chest, dragging your nails down it.
“Lance,” you moaned softly, grinding against him. He grabbed your hips, his breathing getting more ragged, “Lance…let me take care of you.”
“Call me daddy,” he growled, guiding your hips along his erect length, “tell me how much better I am than that piece of garbage…”
“So much better,” you whimpered, leaning down to kiss him. Reaching onto the table you slipped the pill into the bottle and then pulled him on top of you until it had dissolved. When you knew you were in the clear you pulled away, tapping his chest, “you know what, sit up and unwind…let me take a shower to get the stench of him away from me…and then when I come back…I’m gonna give you everything…”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” you purred softly, your hand stroking his chin, “it’ll be a night you never forget, daddy.”
“Mmm,” he growled playfully, “keep making promises like that and I won’t pull out…we’ll have our very own Olympic bastard…that’ll show that fucking Russian…”
“Anything you want, Lance,” you purred, kissing his jaw. He smiled, clearly happy with the fact that you were seemingly under his spell. He picked up the bottle and took a large swig, “I’ll do it for you…”
“Daddy!” he corrected.
You nodded, “sorry. Anything you want, daddy.”

sdkfjds i finally finished watching shadow and bone and i’m gonna literally rewatch the entire thing bc its so good and i have my first thoughts below the cut so people can avoid spoilers
JESPER AND MILO THE GOAT WERE SO CUTE WTF ?? that was a friendship i didn’t realize i needed. he just loved the goat sm and was so affectionate with it
just jesper in general. kit young stole the show with his acting and he just completely captured jesper’s vibes
THE KANEJ HAD ME DYING OH GOD
kaz’s lines to inej make me feel some type of way
amita suman’s acting as inej was completely beautiful ?? like you can see when she wants to show inej’s conflict and her humanity; how she’s so compassionate and also a believer
freddy carter as kaz was just... everything ?? i didn’t realize it was possible to fall in love even more with both an actor and a character and yet... this happened #noregrets though
just the crows dynamic over all
also the hints at kaz’s past with pekka rollins and rollins not remembering him... shit i need to see how this is gonna go down please even though i know how it went in the books
FEDYOR WAS AMAZING TOO just ?? give that man all the hugs. he’s one of my faves
rip dubrov and mikhael but like they were really funny and cute. epitome of boys will be boys honestly
after seeing the extended sneak peek last night, i started to slowly ship malina more than i did when i read the books and for good reason: not only was jessie and archie’s acting so believable, but the flashbacks to when they were children were just... so beautiful?? friends to lovers but like make it epic they said
at the same time, the darklina scenes (episodes 2-5, maybe one-ish scene in episode 7) were also really good?? especially episode 5 like wow ?? jessie and ben really sold it and ben’s facial expressions were just * chef’s kiss*
kinda laughed a lot whenever mal and kirigan were fighting tho?? just cause i just remember that meme with the post about how they made eye contact at a morozova bbq and dont wanna fight bc grandpa ilya would be disappointed and neither of them want that
THE CROWS HEISTING WAS EVERYTHING just im in love with all of them
underrated interaction: kaz and alina in episode 8
NO MOURNERS NO FUNERALS MENTION I LEGIT SCREAMED also with “make me your villain”
didn’t realize that they would do the aleksander name reveal this early but it was cute
DARKLING AND KAZ INTERACTIONS!! there was like 2 and 1 was super brief at the little palace but i really wanted to see kaz hit him with his cane. another 1 on 1 scene with them happened but no cane whacking so i was a little disappointed
ben barnes saying “moya tsaritsa” and the dude version for that with his accent just made me feel some type of way
DAVID OH GOD PROTECT HIM ?? he raised his hand and kirigan was like “no you dont have to *sigh* yes david?” shfksdfn basically give david more screentime 2k21
sad that there’s no sturmhond mention but there were hints about wylan showing up so thats wonderful
zoya had some character development which was really lovely honestly
overall, i loved this show and it was definitely more enjoyable than how the first book had gone and i cannot wait for s2

Jessie: Can you say something-.. like, are you okay?
[Ivan buried his head in hands and squeezed his eyes shut. He wanted to say something-.. he wanted to say a million things, but his voice had long since abandoned him]
Jessie: I wasn’t sure what to do at first, y’know-.. but by the time I tried to find you, I couldn’t.
[Ivan offered a muffled scoff]
Jessie: You were never at home! I didn’t have your number, Hunter went back to prison, Clara moved-.. I really tried.
Jessie: I even thought Miya might know where you’d gone but I never saw her again-.. Lucie’s closed, the Front closed… I figured it was all connected to what was going on in the news.
Ivan: So, y’gave up?
Jessie: Not exactly, I spent hours scouring dating apps, social media-…
Ivan: It’d help if y’got my fuckin’ name right.
Jessie: I’m bad with names, okay-.. and how was I supposed to know you were a family man, rather than a crook?
Ivan: I s’pose it’s a long story…
[Jessie snorted, wiping her eyes with her sleeve]
Ivan: I’m sorry, I’m just-.. it’s a lot t’take in is all. I’m pretty gutted I’ve missed so much.
Jessie: Really?
Ivan: ‘Course! That’s my lil’ guy, ain’t it?
Jessie: I didn’t think you’d care.
Ivan: That’s a bit presumptuous-.. y’don’t even know me.
Jessie: Maybe it was just easier to think that way.
Ivan: I’ll give y’that…
Jessie: He’ll be so excited to know he has a daddy now; he’s forever asking questions about him.
[Ivan couldn’t help but smile, he wasn’t sure he’d ever have kids, and now he suddenly had two]
Jessie: I don’t expect child support, by the way. Like, I have a good job n’ stuff, and my mom’s pretty well off too-.. she lives nearby, actually.
Ivan: Eh, we’ll figure somethin’ out…
Jessie: So, what now?
Ivan: S’pose we oughta get t’know each other?
Jessie: Is the little girl-…
Ivan: Mine? Yeah.
Jessie: Uhm…
Ivan: Surrogate.
Jessie: Ah.
[Ivan tried his best not to tear up as Jude hurtled towards them, smiling the same goofy smile he’d seen in dozens of his own childhood photographs]
Jessie: C’mere-.. I’ve got a huge surprise for you!
[Ivan’s brow shot up; he thought Jessie would’ve wanted to explain the situation to Jude later-.. or in private, but he didn’t seem too phased by the news]
Jude: You’re my daddy?
Ivan: Sure looks like it, bud.
Jude: [gasps] Does that mean I have a doggy?!
Jessie: He’s obsessed with dogs, probably because we can’t have one…
Ivan: [chuckles] Aye, me n’ Oreo are a package deal.
Jessie: We’ll see Oreo again soon-.. c’mon, we’re already way past late.
[Jude frowns briefly. He’d rather stay here, but school was exciting too, and he knew better than to argue]
Jessie: I’ll call you later, yeah?
Ivan: Please…
Jude: Bye Oreo, bye daddy, bye-.. man and baby!
…
Ivan: The fuck just happened, B?
[Bruno held Ivan closely, leaving his rhetorical question unanswered]
Ivan: I swear I ain’t cheated on you, I-…
Bruno: I know.
Ivan: But-…
Bruno: He’s too old for that-.. I know.
[Ivan stared at the floor, his mind moving too fast for him to keep up. He wanted to yell, laugh and weep all at once]
Bruno: Let’s go home. We’ll take the day off, okay?
[Ivan nodded as Bruno nudged him to his feet, forever grateful for his ridiculously calm demeanour]

Demon Slayer 21 - 24 | Given 7 - 11 (FINAL) | Astra 9 - 12 (FINAL) | Fruits Basket 20 - 24 | Dr Stone 8 - 11 | Cop Craft 8 - 10 (not including recap ep.)
Demon Slayer 21
Ooh, butterfly titlecard.
Well…at least we know Muzan…wasn’t always Muzan Jackson.
Can demons go to hell…?
Aw, seeing Rui become human again (at least in his head) was pretty cute.
Shinobu is off her rocker!!! (a continuation of a comment I made in the collab post for last ep.)
“…don’t forget about the other one!” – The other…what, exactly…?
This girl…is Kanao, isn’t it…? She’s the “other one”!
I was almost hoping Shinobu’s shoe blade would stab the crow…it ruined a perfectly good buch of Giyu reaction faces…
Ukogi! You came back to me!
Why can’t the girls wear trousers too…? (someone grumbles “Because that’s not in accordance with the times in the Taisho Era) I don’t care, let girls wear pants! This is not Strike Witches! Update: Shinobu wears pants, actually…*people collectively facepalm*
Kakushi means “hidden/to hide”. It makes a lot of sense, to be honest.
Given 7
I like the ambient sounds in this show.
If Akihiko learnt you thought something was wrong with him, he’d beat you up. Stat.
Haruki and Akihiko: masters of reading the room. (When they’re counted as a pair, that is.)
I just realised Akihiko is daling with Mafuyu because of Yayoi…Yayoi is what Kasai could be and Ugetsu/Akihiko is what Ritsuka/Mafuyu could be.
Dr Stone 8
Note Jasper says “baka musume” – he still acknowledges Kohaku is his daughter even after disowning her.
“We’re neither gods nor geniuses,” says Senku, a genius…hmm.
Suika has such a cute voice that it’s easy to guess her gender…*hint hint*
Was it “kitto” (certainly) or “Kinro” Ginro said in his sleep…?
I think the eyecatch might be iron sand (some form of it, at least).
Fruits Basket 20
(no notes here, sorry!)
Cop Craft 8
What was that black thing that appeared before the plane broke apart…?
Ohhhhhhh…kay. That was not something I signed up for…
Isn’t there some kind of magic Tilarna can use to get back into her body?
I find it ironic that Seven Miles (a place name, I presume) is 3 miles away…
Given 8
I never skip the OP…so I guess it helps that I found Marutsuke and Kizuato on Spotify. (<-Here you go.)
Indirect kiss…!
I’m reminded of what Boueibu said about umbrella colour being a reflection of your personality when I see Mafuyu with a disposable umbrella.
“Hiiragi Kashima wants to be forgiven” sounds like a LN title.
(I had some notes here, but I forgot them…such is the life of watching on phone but writing the notes down later.)
Demon Slayer 22
I LOLled when Tanjiro asked what a Hashira was…(does he know what it is…? Should we know at this point what it is, or did spoilers ruin it for me?)
Wisteria pattern!
LOL, I like Mist Hashira already!
Only Shinobu has a hiragana first name (out of the Hashiras)…hmm.
Shi-Shinazugawa…? Isn’t that the surname of angry-for-the-sake-of-angry mohawk guy from Final Selection…?
Tanjiro uses his head…once again. (That joke never gets old! What do you mean, you don’t like it…?)
Hashiras’ jackets say korosu (to kill) while ordinary slayers get horobosu (to destroy) and Kakushis’ jackets say, well, kakushi (to hide).
“I wonder if the sky is blue.” – Is this person (master of the mansion)…blind…?
The bandage-head Hashira who says “flamboyant” all the time…he reminds me of Senku…(in a bad way.)
I wonder if Giyu will be punished…? A few comments this episode have suggested such an outcome.
“…devours humans…”
Rengoku (flame Hashira)…I think I once saw him being referred to as “Blaziken Head” by someone on the ‘net…LOL.
How does the Master know this…? The Kasugai crows, right?
I just realised the love Hashira has a skirt…
Poor Giyu has his head turned away…he’s too embarrassed to even blush.
Fruits Basket 21
I noticed the fanclub only ever calls Hana “wave girl”…
I love how the narrator, a middle-aged man, has to voice the thoughts of a teenage girl.
Fruits Basket 22
(no notes, sorry!)
Dr Stone 9
H & N, huh…?
Astra 9
So…what is the sphere…?
Luca’s real dad vs. Quitterie’s mom = art vs. science, LOL.
…I almost cried when everyone started crying…
Uh…random question I didn’t think about when it was revealed, but should Luca invest in a bra…?
You can see Gruppies and waves on the wall while Kanata and Luca talk…and shrooms...and coral…
Wait, so these guys are all…aliens? Polina is the only one from Earth…? What about the sphere???
Cop Craft 9
Why did the intro get moved to the middle of the episode…? Also, I’ve noticed there’s a special episode next week…it means there really was a budget and/or scheduling stuff-up along the way somewhere, just like you can suspect with an anime that moves as terribly as this one.
There’s a strange dent in Kei’s leg…specifically, on his kneecap…
Astra 10
Guardian Enzo said no one’s mentioned the Astra crew never said they were from Earth before…now I’m noticing it too.
W-WHAT?! I was right????? (see this post for why I suspected Charce to be the culprit)
Demon Slayer 23
3 episodes until the end, huh…?
Why does Sanemi taunting Nezuko remind me of a sexual encounter…? (with the “You know you want it” etc.)…Uh, bad news, guys. Sanemi is 21 and Nezuko is 14, so no shipping unless you don’t mind 7 year age gaps and an underage girl, all in the one ship.
Mist Hashira? Using rocks to flick at the esteemed guest (Tanjiro)? Hmm, he ain’t quite my type after all…
This Kakushi that keeps punching Tanjiro seems to be a woman…or just a guy with very long eyelashes. Update: Nope, definitely a woman. The Kakushi dynamic almost reminds me of Jessie and James from Pokémon…
Heyyyyyyy! Don’t underestimate a girl!!!!!!!!!!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nope. Nope. Nope. I was hoping we wouldn’t hear about how Zenitsu’s hands were the size of a KFC spork, but…eeeeeeeeeesh…
I never thought I’d be so happy to have Inosuke silenced by spider daddy…well, here we are.
“…I’ll become an old guy and die.” – Wow…even I don’t think of that stuff…
I wonder if Muzan had anything to do with why the Master’s head looks the way it is?
Dr Stone 10
(no notes, sorry!)
Given 9
I wonder if Akihiko ever liked Yayoi in the first place…
I noticed Ritsuka says “atarashii hito” which is translated to “someone else”…the English suggests more intimacy than the Japanese…hmm.
Mafuyu, my boy…! (I bet you could call all of The Seasons “my boys” now.)
I love how Take acts as Haruki’s straight man.
I was wondering why the ANN review was referring to Given as “Wonderwall” – that’s the name of the next episode.
Fruits Basket 23
“What are you doing?”
Astra 11
Only one ‘til the end…oh wow, where did the time go??? (Also, ep. 12’s title of “Friend-Ship” is terrible…a terrible pun…)
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuude, I saw the Seira = Aries thing right away…it’s exactly the same as what breaks Juuni Taisen for people…
Wait, but couldn’t Charce, as the king’s clone, becom the heir to the throne instead…?
Oh, that…that joke’s absolutely terrible…! *shakes head* Did you know I was holding my hand over my mouth for basically that entire climactic scene? I think summer might have a fighting chance in the end-of-year rankings for once!
Demon Slayer 24
I love how Tanjiro is “that headbutting kid” now.
There are cute little butterflies on the title card.
It’s good to see the return of Murata…and those transition faces.
Considering spiders are pretty gross if you think about it, both sides have a point…
Murata’s a more fun character than I thought a bit guy would be…in fact, that might explain why we learn his name, as opposed to being a nobody (like the female Slayer on the mountain that got killed by Spider Mama).
“I think we’re a lot better now.” – Aside from Zenitsu’s hands, that is…*makes disgusted face and thinks of KFC sporks*
Sleeping Ukogi is totes adorbs…*face beams with happiness*
Uhhhhhhhh…I reallllllllly dunno what to feel about Zenitsu’s love of girls. He’s no playboy, that’s for sure. Unfortunately (?), I do agree with Zenitsu on how Inosuke deals with girls though.
Zenitsu’s an M, I tell you! An MMMMMMM!
Wow, someone put real effort…into Zenitsu playing tag with a girl…sad life.
“A girl was able to do that to something that hard?!” – Nyeh-heh-heh-heh…call me dirty-minded, but…because this is blowing into a gourd we’re talking about, it sounds funny out of context.
Lemme guess…Aoi is this blue grumpy one. That’s why I dropped Divine Gate (since characters matched their colour schemes too well). Update: No, this blue one was talking when she mentioned Aoi, so Aoi is one of the three mini butterfly girls, I think. Update 2: No, the sentence was punctuated funny: “You’ll be up against myself, Aoi and Kanao there.” Turns out Aoi really is blue grumpy girl, because the sentence is missing a comma after “Aoi”.
“Please forgive me.” – Hey, Moya, you were right. Plus, that random Haganezuka appearance was funny – that’s been the first time in a while that I’ve laughed at Demon Slayer properly.
Apparently Shinobu and Tanjiro on the roof is a meme now. Now I see why.
“…with their instincts laid totally bare.” – I feel like slayers and demons aren’t so different, because even thought both fight for survival, slayers fight for revenge (in a sense, bloodlust) and demons for actual bloodlust.
“I feel like I can rest easy now.” – Sounds like an early death flag to me! (I may be an anime-only watcher at this point, but I encountered some spoilers that showed me Shinobu’s fate. Be mindful of that if it seems like I’m accurately predicting the future.)
Shinobu and Tanjiro…hmm, what a combo.
I love how the Zenitsu and Inosuke in the background react to crimes they’re being accused of in the foreground.
Cop Craft 10
Emails, emails…can’t anyone talk in person these days? (As much as I love emails, I gotta critique that.)
Hey wait. I thought their AI wasn’t so good…
Kei’s birthday is the 18th of June 1993…? Wow, I didn’t know he was 26.
New what now??? This really is straight outta Compton, if you know what I mean…
The march about aliens here reminds me of the climate strike the other day.
Given 10
Smol Ritsuka…
This show is hilarious when it needs to be. I’m really gonna miss it.
“Kedama” means hairball. “Tama” is a cat’s name, as implied here.
“Mafuyu” has “winter” in it to make a set of 4 seasons though…
Oh, so that’s why they’re – and this show is - “Given”.
Fruits Basket 24
Did Tohru vomit…or was she just catching her breath…?
“…when you are.”
Was this “monstrous Kyo” scene halfway through the manga or at the end? I don’t remember anymore…
Astra 12 (FINAL)
Hmm…I heard about gaman (“tolerance”, “persistence”…or maybe “working through hardship”…?) being a concept in the past few years and I think it’s very much embodied in the streotypical Japanese man…or just Kanata. Who knows?
So…what language are Kanata and co. really speaking? It seems like English, based on the spaceport screens (I rewatched ep. 1 today, I should know), but they’re speaking in Japanese for the sake of the fact it’s anime, right? Update: I also noticed quit a bit of the spaceport advertising is for Lucy Lum, while there is special attention paid to Aries’s eyes in ep. 1.
This is what they mean when they say “history is written by the victors”. To build from that, my idea is that the hegemonic idea becomes the truth, i.e. majority rules wins the ability to write history itself (e.g. patriarchal values, able-bodied people’s values etc. write history, not the minorities).
Aries may have eidetic memory, but she sucks at names. That’s consistent with ep. 1 too.
Oh, right! Kanata’s right arm is his dominant one!...I never knew such fond memories could be made of a single character’s appendage…who knew.
LOL, Charce brought out his sparkly face again.
Ooh, older!Ulgar is hot! Me likey!!!
Ooh, Funi’s star ornament. Ulgar still has one!
I swore that was Quitterie…turned out it was Funi. Oh well, Astra lied to me again. (I’m fine with that.)
You can even see Luca’s femininity for once…!
Ooh, red tulips = true love, white tulips = forgiveness/worthiness. Normally tulips represent “perfect love”. Perfect for Kanata and Aries, don’tcha think?
I was wondering why Kanata had a new black hand. (Maybe it was a glove or something.) Nope, it’s a prosthetic.
I don’t actually know how to say that joke about being a right-hand man in Japanese, despite hearing it from the show twice (I went back and tried to listen again). Somebody tell me, please!
I noticed one of the people in the cast list had an exclamation mark next to their name…well, that was funny for a second.
The one unrecognisable song was Astra-gou no Bouken (Adventure of the Spaceship Astra).
Well, that was a wild ride. I’m definitely sad that it’s over, but remember what they say in the show itself – look forward, not back. See you next time!
Given 11 (FINAL)
Come to think of it, if you interpret Kizuato one way, it means “Traces of Scars”, but this song’s title is in katakana so you can’t tell…
This is like a marriage proposal…
I’ve noticed something – ever since I started engaging with BL and yaoi in earnest, I’ve realised there’s this fear of “not being masculine” enough by both members of the couple. That’s probably what Ritsuka is going through with the box.
What did Ritsuka even bump into on his way out, though…?
Oh, science curriculum, huh? Me, I’m a student of the humanities, so I wouldn’t know about that feel…I was always average at English anyway after essays started coming in…
Oh, we’re back at Harusame. Didn’t think we would be.
I love how Mafuyu’s handle for the band is “Kedama”…the name of his dog.
Update: Turns out the SNS account for Given (band), as well as Mafuyu and Ritsuka, are real...on Twitter. I’d assume Haruki and Akihiko join them for the movie...?
Dr Stone 11
Ooh, lyrics! Finally!
I almost expected Chrome to go, “What’s soap?” – he’s never seen it before, remember?
Note Kaseki means “fossil” in Japanese and contains the kanji for “stone” in it.
Ginro just yelled the Weekly Shonen Jump motto…coincidence? I think not!
Team Shiny Spear Tips Forever complicates things for the crew.
