Frightober Day 5 - Pre-Canon!Frank
Word Count: 552
Warnings: Mentions of a character death, grief/mourning, description of a jump scare, past spousal death, past parent death, past child abuse
Fandom: The Frighteners
Pairings: Frank Bannister x Debra Bannister (past/mentioned)
Okay, so this isn't a Lunnister piece, since it's set pre-canon, but this was mentioned in my fic, The Threshold of Something New. And, I get to explore Frank's dynamic with Stuart, Cyrus, and the Judge.
————————
The Volvo clunked out as Frank swerved into his usual parking spot on the hill. There had been yet another mysterious death listed in the obituary as a "heart attack," so naturally, he had to go back down to the cemetery.
After two months, he already had his little "ya got trouble" routine down to a science: express sympathy, hand out card, get kicked out by irate family member or Hiles.
Frank entered the house, only to be greeted by darkness.
"I paid the damn electric bill this month--" he mumbled, turning the lights on.
"SURPRISE!" Stuart popped out of nowhere, somehow having managed to secure a party hat onto his head.
Frank jumped back and screamed, "MOTHERFUCK--"
"Happy birthday!" Stuart cheered.
Once the sudden fear had faded, confusion quickly took its place. "How the hell did you know it was my birthday?"
Cyrus then walked in, also wearing a party hat but not looking happy about it. "Stuart got into one of your boxes, and found an old picture. On the back, it said that it was your birthday, and it gave the date."
"And that day is today!" Stuart exclaimed happily, ushering Frank through the unfinished house into the kitchen. "We have presents--"
"That he stole," Cyrus muttered.
"We have cake--"
"Which he also stole."
"And we have games!"
"Because that's a normal thing to have at a grown-ass man's party."
The Judge then stumbled in, as if he were drunk, singing something that Frank had guessed to be a popular drinking song in the Old West.
"How is he-- I got rid of the alcohol in the house!" Frank insisted.
"Nah, Rustler bit him pretty good-- lotta ectoplasm," Cyrus explained. "He's been out of it for awhile."
"Oh..." Frank grimaced.
"So, what do you want to do first?" Stuart asked.
There was something about the excitement in Stuart's voice that irked Frank. The bright decorations were giving him a headache, and his eyes felt like they were burning.
He thought of the few birthdays that he had gotten to spend with his mother before she had passed. He never really celebrated it after she had died; to say that his father wasn't the kind of man who cared about his son's birthday was an understatement.
Then, he had met Debra.
She had been the one who made his birthdays fun again.
She had been the reason why he was so happy to have lived and grown for another year.
And now that she was gone...
"What the hell were you thinking?" Frank asked.
Stuart blanched confusedly. "Pardon?"
"I'm not five years old anymore," he said. "I don't need you or anyone to make a big deal about my birthday. And I don't need you jumping out to scare me when I come home, then try to distract me from that fact that you invaded my privacy!"
He knew that the volume of his voice was rising, but he didn't care. He then pointed at both Stuart and Cyrus.
"And if you-- either of you-- mess with my stuff again, I'm sending you back to the cemetery," he warned.
Frank then skulked up the stairs, leaving the three emanations to themselves. Stuart lowered his head in shame and removed the party hat.
"Stu, I tried to warn you," Cyrus said.

The infamous The Lone Gunmen pilot aired for the first time on March 4, 2001 and was never aired in the UK. The X-Files spin off pilot featured a plot of the government trying to fly a commercial airplane into the twin towers to create a war in the Middle East. 6 months later in real life, terrorists hijacked several airplanes, two of which crashed into the World Trade Center in an event that has since been known as 9/11 and spawned a long term war in the Middle East. Australia first aired the episode just days before the tragic events that changed the world. The episode was filmed over year (March and April of 2000) before the real world events. The episode also marked the last episode long time X-Files director Rob Bowman did for 1013 Productions before focussing on feature films. The episode also introduced the recurring character Yves Adele Harlow and there was a cameo by X-Files alum Kimmy the Geek (Jim Fyfe). ("Pilot", The Lone Gunmen, TV Event)

So, I watched the failed pilot for the 2004 Dark Shadows reboot, and there's a lot of weirdness there, but I can't get over casting the very hot Matt Czuchry as Willie Loomis.
Like Hot Willie is not a concept I can wrap my mind around. John Karlen is a reasonably good-looking dude, but he was never one of the smoldering romantic heroes on the show (at least not as Willie, maybe they let him have that role in Parallel time or the past). Jim Fyfe isn't bad looking either, and was obviously uglied up to play 91 Willie. Matt Czuchry? They give him a scraggly goatee and glasses and baseball cap and still can't hide the hotness. I mean, shortly after the failed pilot, he was playing Rory Gilmore's hot, rich boyfriend Logan on Gilmore Girls:
Tumblr media
Maybe that was part of the point? After Willie is bitten and comes under Barnabas's thrall, he has lost the glasses (always Hollywood shorthand for "this character is hot now") and is talking about how he feels "stronger" since meeting Barnabas. Maybe they were going in a different direction for the Willie-Barnabas relationship in this series.
2004 Willie seems set up to be more likable from the beginning. Karlen's Willie and even 91 Willie (despite being a comic relief caricature) were shown as deeply unpleasant guys with established bad reputations in Collinsport pre-Barnabas. Hot Willie is kind of Shaggy-like, makes awkward jokes and doesn't seem to love his job, and comes across as kind of a goofy loser at worst. He even has a girlfriend who pushes him into opening the Collins family tomb to look for treasure, removing some of his culpability there. (Barnabas kills her, but decides to give Willie a make-over.) Willie doesn't seem at all afraid of Barnabas, and Barnabas is never violent towards him after the initial biting scene, although he does get really close and briefly hold a dagger against Willie's neck in a very homoerotic moment.
I'm curious as to what the show had planned for Willie and Barnabas, and I am 100% sure fandom would have shipped them, because holy shit, that dagger scene. Newly-released Barnabas said, "I will drain two women to death or near-death, and I will make this hot young guy even hotter and then turn him into my live-in manservant." There are already people shipping original series Willie and Barnabas - not my ship of choice, but I get it, more power to you guys. I actually think the 91 series is even more homoerotic, with Willie becoming deeply loyal to Barnabas within a couple of episodes, gazing at him in adoration, and sitting there in rapt attention while Barnabas reads from Sarah's diary, even though 91 Barnabas continues to react violently whenever Willie annoys him. I'm sure it's meant to be Willie viewing Barnabas as some kind of abusive father figure or older brother type, but replace uglied up 91 Willie with Hot Willie, and fans would be all over it.
Anyway. Hot Willie. I'm not opposed to the concept, it's just weird. The only character that I object to making young and hot is Julia Hoffman - the woman is an experienced doctor and that shit takes time. She can be hot, but not young. I was going to complain about young hot Julia in the 2004 pilot, but apparently the actress Kelly Hu was around 35 or 36 at the time, and yeah, that works.

Why did I just dream that fyfe said in an interview "it's okay aishy will cook me dinner" and my dream self proceeded to post the following:
What the media think fyfe is like: I'm a very private person and an introvert/extrovert
What fyfe is really like: I live at 7 Fremantle Dockers Street with my husband Jim and we have two dogs, four cats and have adopted 11 children from Africa who each have their own bedroom
