Last night I caught an old episode of Taggart (I mean I know they’re all old because it’s been cancelled for about a decade, but it was season 3 old) and I was reminded that I wrote this fic once.
It was part of a challenge to write 30 fanfics inspired by songs that fit 30 different categories. I can’t remember what the category was but I chose Green Day’s Novacaine and based it on Jim Taggart’s feelings towards dentists.

"There's been a murder!" arguably the most uttered phrase ever by a Scottish TV cop and on February 21st 1935 the man himself, Mark McManus was born.
Taggart star Mark McManus, despite dying aged just 59, in 1994, lived more lives than most. Hamilton-born Mark had already been a miner, a docker, and an amateur boxer before he took up acting - in Australia, where he shared screen time with both Skippy The Bush Kangaroo, and Mick Jagger, in director Tony Richardson's 1970 take on the Ned Kelly story
Returning home in 1971, McManus appeared in productions at the Royal Court and the National Theatre, playing alongside such actors as Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson. But it was not until 1983 that he found the role which he was born to play, Tough Glasgow polisman, Jim Taggart. To some critics, the character veered into the danger zone of caricature: the sort of Glaswegian hardnut who could be summed up by all those cliched epithets: 'dour', 'gruff', 'gritty', 'stony-faced', he certainly carried off the part with ease.
He may have come across all of them, but in real life Mark loved a wee laugh to himself, one anecdote I found to confirm this relates to last weeks birthday girl, Annette Crosbie, who incidentally attended Edinburgh's Boroughmuir School with my Uncle Edmund!.
Anyway Annette featured in a 1987 edition of Taggart. Being a perfectionist, she kept asking McManus to rehearse together. McManus, who usually read over his lines just once before filming, became so annoyed that during one scene he went to light her cigarette and "accidentally" burnt away part of her wig with an extra-long flame (a gaff which later featured on It'll be Alright on the Night). While making the next episode, McManus quipped to a co-star, "I hope you're not gonna be any trouble or I'll set you on fire like the last one!"
McManus was a graduate summa cum laude of the 'Less Is More' School of Acting.
An average of 13 million viewers (including, it is said, the Queen Mother) agreed. Taggart became as synonymous with Glasgow as Inspector Morse is with Oxford. The programme is now Scottish Television's biggest money-earner, playing in over 60 countries, including Afghanistan, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Bosnia. Wonder how they all translated the word "murd'rrr"?!!?

Atlas Shrugged Read-Through: PP 14-20
Our first introduction to the primary antagonist of Atlas Shrugged, Jim Taggart, is with him sitting at his desk saying "Don't bother me, don't bother me, don't bother me."
The unpleasant task that Eddie Willers has been facing is coming into Jim's office to tell him that a delivery of steel that has been delayed multiple times will be delayed again. Jim ordered the steel from his friend, Orren Boyle, who runs Associated Steel. Jim insists to Eddie that he won't hear of ordering the metal from the competing company, Rearden Steel, run by Hank Rearden. Taggart Transcontinental needs the steel because their Rio Norte line is too damaged to keep safely running trains on, and they are being outcompeted in the region by a small, local railroad called the Phoenix-Durango. Eddie is telling Jim to make a decision because the regional line supports the oil operation of Ellis Wyatt.
All of these are important characters and business that will come up a lot but they're not the real focus of this scene. The real focus of this scene is making Jim Taggart look like a big throbbing asshole, which is how you're supposed to think of him.
Here are a few of his lines from this brief scene:
"Who's thinking of giving up the Rio Norte Line?" he asked. "There's never been any question of giving it up. I resent your saying it. I resent it very much."
"Orren is my friend." He heard no answer. "I resent your attitude. Orren Boyle will deliver that rail just as soon as it's humanly possible. So long as he can't deliver it, nobody can blame us."
"Ellis Wyatt is a greedy bastard who's after nothing but money," said James Taggart. "It seems to me that there are more important things in life than making money."
"I think he's a destructive, unscrupulous ruffian. I think he's an irresponsible upstart who's been grossly overrated." It was astonishing to hear a sudden emotion in James Taggart's lifeless voice. "I'm not so sure that his oil fields are such a beneficial achievement. It seems to me that he's dislocated the economy of the whole country. Nobody expected Colorado to become an industrial state. How can we have any security or plan anything if everything changes all the time? [...] Yes, I know, I know, he's making money. But that is not the standard, it seems to me, by which one gauges a man's value to society. And as for his oil, he'd come crawling to us. and he'd wait his turn along with all the other shippers, and he wouldn't demand more than his fair share of transportation—if it weren't for the Phoenix-Durango. We can't help it if we're up against destructive competition of that kind. Nobody can blame us."
Jim Taggart is aggrieved. He is whiny, he doesn't accept responsibility for his actions, he resents people who are more active than he is (at least if they make demands on his time or cost him business by shifting their purchases to his competitors).
Jim is not written well, but the way that he is poorly written is interesting. Rand's big bad guy is an industrialist who doesn't take responsibility for his actions and who wants other people to do all of the hard work.
I'm going to get right to the big reveal in the middle of the book: Jim and the Moochers force through a law that means that nobody can compete with them. Other railroads shut down, new innovative companies have to give their capital to older businesses.
On the one hand, I think there's something clever that Rand is doing here. Jim and the Moochers use what is essentially "weaponized wokeness" (mealy-mouthed speeches about collectivism) to place themselves at the head of state-backed monopolies. They're not evil just because they're whiny and don't take responsibility, they're evil because they can use the power of the state to crush competitors, which also allows them to exploit workers and consumers.
On the other hand: I can't tell if Rand is being stupid or malicious in attributing the motivations for these actions to a collectivist impulse.
She clearly, obviously, deeply hated collectivism. But when each of her characters are revealed down to the nastiest, darkest parts of themselves it's revealed that their collectivist talk was meant to cover up personal greed. So I can't tell: stupid or malicious? Is she being stupid, and genuinely doesn't believe that anyone who talks about or works toward communal goods and shared resources actually wants those things? Or is she being malicious and suggesting that all people who claim to want to do things for the benefit of everyone are actually greedy and are trying to burn down the rest of the world so that they can stand on a slightly nicer bit of the ashes?
I haven't read much of Rand's non-fiction, or watched too many interviews with her, but I know that at one point she discussed the evils of altruism by saying that the Nazis were motivated by altruism. That seems like it's pulling a pretty bullshit rhetorical trick and defining "nationalism" as "altruism." And that's what she does with the evil characters in her books - makes them do terrible things while saying that they're doing so for the good of mankind when everybody knows the score. It's a bullshit rhetorical trick.
And this is how we're introduced to Jim Taggart. He's a wealthy industrialist who is whining to his sister's assistant that he can't be blamed that his friend is late with a delivery of steel. And I think Jim Taggart is a pretty good example of Rand being more malicious than stupid. We're going to learn a lot about his motivations and desires throughout the book and they come together to make a laboriously crafted strawman of an evil capitalist.
Anyway. Eddie walks out of their meeting after Jim insults his own sister; Eddie at that point finds an old clerk repairing a typewriter (one that has been repaired before and is made of inferior materials - planned obsolescence; a subject that I will have to yell about somewhere else) and asking Eddie if he knows where anyone can get woolen undershirts. Jim's office has been a break from the most visceral reminders of the bleak, slow-motion collapse of the economy that Eddie is confronted with as soon as he's out of the room again, and he is once again bothered by the question "Who is John Galt?" - the question that opened the novel in the mouth of a bum - as the introductory scene of the novel ends.

Polly in LFTS is Polly Plantar from Amphibia right? Who are the other kidnapped kids? Where are they from?
LFTS Polly is indeed a reference to Amphibia Polly! Though they are not the same entirely. Polly's design is based off a small alien child who appears in the original Treasure Planet, though she has pinkish skin and blonde hair (again as reference to Amphibia Polly.)
The other kidnapped kids have no specific references attached to them. Oculus's alien species is based off Onus, from Treasure Planet once again. I made up Kiko, Ocknee, Prentiss and Kolver's species (though Kolver is borrowed from a minor role in Rewrite the Stars.)
If you'll let me ramble about the rest of the Gruesome Gangler crew and other pirates,
Garranast is based off two different alien species, actually, who got crossed in my brain and stayed that way. His "stony" form is based off Mr. Arrow, while his brutal nature and physical stature are based off the pirate called Hands. Given that Tamash is the same species as Garranast, he's the same.
Skirch is based off Scroop. Again, also borrowed from Rewrite the Stars.
Eely Blunkrat is based off another background pirate from Treasure Planet (wiki names this pirate as "Mackriki").
And while I haven't discussed much of the Pleiadean Fleet, I'd like it noted that Kate Blake is based on a character of the same name designed for Treasure Planet 2, though I mistakenly described her as of a similar species to Amelia.
And only tangentially related to Love from the Stars, Tsetxirey, Jim's roomate in For You I'd Steal the Stars, is highly inspired by the Na'vi of James Cameron's Avatar series.
Also Taggart is a Procyon, a species introduced in a Treasure Planet sequel videogame Battle at Procyon!
I know this is probably not at all the answer you were looking for, but thanks for the ask! I know I rambled.

Atlas Shrugged random observations
Rereading this novel as a grown-ass adult is trippy, and I just need to scream about it into the internet void.
Enjoy?
Caution, contains #spoilers.
Early on, someone says “[X] spoke for one and a half hours and said nothing,” and I just went, “damn, I’ve been in that meeting.”
Conversely: The funniest fuckin’ things in here are the “real talk” press conferences. First, where Dagny and Hank are like “yeah, we did this because we want to make a shitload of money. What of it?” and then Dagny’s Reynold’s Papers moment where she’s just like, “Yeah, I f---ed Hank, and it was AWESOME.”
(Perhaps this was catharsis, because most official communications I experience these days are the “talk forever and say nothing” kind, and it sucks.)
I’ve definitely read fanfic that’s better written than this. That woman loved her adjectives and adverbs, and to adjective her adverbs.
Wow, the word gay has sure changed primary meaning in the last 65 years. Sometimes, to amusing effect.
Fanfic that must exist, but I ain’t lookin’ for:
John/Francisco slashfic
Dagny + the boys coffeshop harem AU
Fanfic someone should write: Cheryl/Eddie (They deserved better)
Can’t help wondering: have objectivists actually read this? Because a lot of people who claim to be objectivists really don’t seem to follow A is A, and that’s just fucking annoying.
Also: she seems to be assuming that “heroic industrialists” will pay more for good labor. And that hasn’t really played out in the real world.
The most unrealistic thing in this book is the fact that people listen to the MCs soliloquies. 10 pages of Francisco talking about what money means? PFFFT, that’d be shut down after about 2 paragraphs.
If this were a modern novel, would Jim Taggart be a cryptobro? And would everyone be vaping??

I'm sort of embarrassed to admit this, and not...
I have read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. The actual big hulking book. I have read it several times.
So let me beak down the characters...
Dagny Taggart. Central character, who watches the world falling apart, as her wealthy friends are disappearing. Dagny lives in a world where brains are disappearing.
Jim Taggart. Dagny's hopeless brother. Jim reminds a person of a certain former President. Weak, pleading, whining, at a loss to explain why he can't succeed, Jim, in his "genius" conceives of a number of plans, mostly around making rules that force people to buy things they don't need, and are of poor quality. He also had the genius move to extend his rail company's line south of the border, because he was good friends with the Mexican Government. Mexico then seized and nationalised the Taggart rail, which experts were telling Jim was going to happen.
Hank Rearden. His business is steel, and he is a genius, and an engineer. He and Dagny carry on an affair, which fills him with shame. But his wife, and the rest of his family take him for granted.
Okay, I'll stop there. Given Rand's reputation, and position as the darling of the religious right, you'd be forgiven for thinking that God might play a central part in this story. But religion is derided savagely by Rand. Communism is also derided by Rand, as well. Religion is accused, by Rand of taking man's will hostage, communism of taking man's body. And I do mean "man's". There are few female characters in this book, other than Dagny.
I'm torn, here. Rand was such a diligent author. She went into great detail to create a universe with rules, and then to ensure that characters and events follow those rules to the letter. So, I admire that degree of competence. But the universe she created was born of a certain naivety, and she left a fate to some characters that they did not deserve. She had greedy, brainless, wealthy business owners, who maintained their grip by doing what Trump did--grift, coercion, and deception.
Our Covid reality has overtaken her contrived world. But then her contrived world contained no disease at all. Most of her characters smoked so many cigarettes and cigars that some of them should be showing the early stages of lung cancer, at the very least.
Then there is the climax of the novel, where the ultra right wing government constructs a sonic weapon aimed at intimidating the American public, nothing else. But the Supreme General starts playing with the controls, completely inebriated, and succeeds in blowing the entire weapon skyhigh, as the entire country falls apart around him. All the bright, sensible, capable people have left to their hideout in the Colorado Mountains, so naturally, the world falls apart. This is the universe she created. A universe with so few intelligent people.
As I said, naive, and simplistic. But then most stories are somewhat limited and simplistic.
What is sad funny, and alarming funny is how easily you can draw parallels between Atlas Shrugged and our world--and get it really wrong. It is not our world, because--remember--disease doesn't exist in Rand's universe, and a pandemic is impossible.
In any case, I have read the book a few times, and been able to quote some things from it. I just wish that more people knew what went on in the book so that they could criticise the reality.

Happy 75th Birthday Denis Lawson born September 27, 1947 in Glasgow. and Kinross Star Wars connections here, Lawson’s nephew is, of course, Ewan McGregor, who portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy.and he was also an early drama school classmate of Ian McDiarmid, aka Emperor Palpatine in movie franchise.
Lawson t grew up in Crieff, Perthshire, after his family moved there when he was three years old. He is the son of Phyllis Neno, a merchant, and Laurence Lawson, a watchmaker Denis was educated at Crieff Primary School (then called Crieff Public School). After the 11-plus examination, he attended Morrison's Academy as a day pupil before attending the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, having first unsuccessfully auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He then sold carpets and did amateur theatre work for a year in Dundee before auditioning again at RADA in London and successfully at RSAMD in Glasgow.
Lawson began his acting career with a small role in a 1969 stage production of The Metamorphosis in London's West End. and has since starred in television dramas such as The Merchant of Venice  opposite Laurence Olivier as Shylock, Rock Follies and Dead Head.
Denis has been in too many other TV shows to mention, from the original Dr. Finlay’s Casebook and of course with almost every other Scottish actor he has starred in a Bill Forsyth film, his being Local Hero, but unusually he has never been in Taggart, his last film role of note was in the Glasgow Gangster film, The Wee Man, Denis was in 61 episodes of the long running hospital drama, Holby City as consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Tom Campbell-Gore and 37 episodes of the crime drama New Tricks. In 2017 he played The Duke of Atholl in the series Victoria.
In Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope his voice was dubbed by David Ankrum. He reprised the role, in voice-over form, in the Nintendo GameCube game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. Lawson’s voice also provided the narration for the audio book of Heir to the Empire and Dark Force Rising in both novels, he reprised his role as Wedge Antilles as well as playing all characters.
Lawson turned down Lucas’s proposal to make a cameo as Raymus Antilles in Revenge of the Sith.
Lawson was approached to return for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, but declined, stating that it “just would have bored [him].”he did however resurface in The Rise of Skywalker and voiced  Wedge Antilles  in the Video game Star Wars: Squadrons
Denis has been quiet for onscreen roles lately, but he has been treading the boards, his last show was  Anything Goes at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh last spring.
No stranger to Edinburgh, it was here that Lawson spent some of the formative years of his career working at both the Royal Lyceum and old Traverse in the Grassmarket, where he trained with the legendary dancer, actor, teacher, mime artist, and choreographer, Lindsay Kemp.
His childhood heroes were silver screen stars like Danny Kaye, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.“American Vaudeville kind of people,” he clarifies, “That's what made me want to perform. I wanted to be like them and Anything Goes is that 'front-cloth' vaudevillian-style show and I just love it. It's fantastic - musical theatre has always been a strong part of my career."
So strong, if fact, he won an Olivier Award for his performance as Jim Lancaster in the musical, Mr Cinders.
On his nephew, Ewan, Denis has clarified the line that he tried to talk MacGregor out of the Star Wars role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, saying;
“Ewan likes to say that, but it wasn't like that at all. He was young at the time and it's easy in this profession to get pigeon-holed, so all I said to him was to just be careful. To make sure he really wanted to do it. It was great that he did it and ignored ‘my advice’ and he was fantastic in it. He is an amazing talent.”
It's Lawson we have to thank for encouraging that talent and he remembers, "My sister Carol came to me and said that Ewan, who was eight at the time, had something to tell me. He stood in front of me very seriously and said, 'I want to be an actor.' And I said, ‘Fine, well come back to me in a few years and we will discuss it’. As with me, it never went away and I am immensely proud of what he has done.”
