Presley’s Center Courts was a failed business arrangement that Elvis became embroiled in during 1976. There seem to be many conflicting versions of this story, and no one comes out of it particularly well.
The plan was for a nationwide chain of branded, upmarket racquetball and spa facilities, Presley’s Center Courts, for which Elvis would lend his name and in return receive 25 per cent of the company. Elvis was assured it was a risk-free commitment and a good long term prospect, requiring no cash investment on his part. Elvis might have seen this as a way to forge some business and financial independence from Colonel Parker. The driving force behind the project was a local Memphis property developer and businessman, Mike McMahon, along with Dr Nichopoulos and Joe Esposito.
According to Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick;
"…They had broken ground on the Memphis and Nashville clubs in the middle of April (1976) …but then things started to go wrong, as McMahon claimed that Elvis had to put up money for a buyout of the leases on the two buildings currently under construction, and when Elvis balked, informed him that by becoming 25 percent owner of the corporation, he was liable for 25 percent of its debts…"
Elvis then discovered that McMahon had been taking a salary and was funding a company car from the business account, despite assurances from Nichopoulos that no one would be taking anything out until the business showed a profit. Elvis appealed to Colonel Parker for help, but Parker reminded Elvis that he had been against the whole affair from the start, that a 25% stake in a company at no cost had always been too good to be true, and that it was too late for any kind of intervention.
Elvis took matters into his own hands. In a late night and not entirely coherent phone call to McMahon, with whom the relationship had to this point been cordial, Elvis let him have it, and even allegedly threatened to kill him. Nichopoulos mediated, telling McMahon not to worry and that irrational rage was a side effect of Elvis’ medication regime, and that Elvis would soon calm down. Nichopoulos wasn’t spared, himself the subject of a midnight call during which Elvis fired him and robustly expressed his disappointment at being taken advantage of.
Through his lawyers, Elvis subsequently withdrew his support for Presley’s Center Courts and instructed that his name be removed from the project. Following some legal manoeuvres, it appears that Elvis did pay some compensation to the racquetball company and loaned them around 40 000 dollars on top of 25 000 dollars damages, and the business continued without Elvis’ name until it folded in 1981. (The loan was apparently repaid promptly).
Nichopoulos was soon forgiven, as was Joe Esposito. The following year Elvis loaned a further 55 000 dollars to Nichopoulos, on top of an existing loan of 200 000 dollars, as the doctor was struggling with debt over a lavish new home. (As if Nichopoulos wasn't ethically compromised enough already).
According to the New York Times;
"...In 1980 Dr. Nichopoulos was indicted on 14 counts of overprescribing stimulants, depressants and painkillers for Presley, the singer Jerry Lee Lewis and several other patients. Two counts dealing with Presley accused Dr. Nichopoulos of “unlawfully, wilfully and feloniously” prescribing, in the months leading to Presley’s death, a cornucopia of narcotics, painkillers, depressants and appetite suppressants..."
Dr. Nichopoulos was acquitted of all charges, but in 1995 the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners permanently suspended his medical license, stating that he had been overprescribing to numerous patients for years. He tried multiple times to have his medical licence reinstated through appeals, but failed. He died in 2016, aged 88.

Jerry Lee Lewis, c. July 1959. From JLL.org
Elvis Presley, Knickerbocker Hotel, Hollywood, August 18, 1956. From ElvisPresleyMusic.com.
[ 12 Days of Christmas 💕 5/12 ]
At the start of my research, I found all sorts of stories, I wasn’t sure were even true. Like, Elvis and Jerry Lee riding around on motorcycles, with no clothes on the streets of Memphis, in the middle of the night? No way – but as time passed, the story got brought up to him three times (from what I know). He had a consistent reaction, that has led me to believe it happened.
Though, the stories are subjective, so you can draw your own conclusion!
The first reference of the story:
“In a crowded basement meeting room at the posh Omni-Memphis Hotel, 20-some journalists are attempting, with difficulty, to grill the subject of the forthcoming film “Great Balls of Fire”
The discussion, which never quite seems to interconnect, has degenerated to a foreign-sounding report’s question about whether the film’s subject, Jerry Lee Lewis – rock music’s archetypal bad boy – ever motorbiked naked with Elvis Presley, his fellow Memphian an ultra-rival.
“Motorbike?” Lewis says, archly, dismissively.
“Nekkid? Me and Elvis Presley?” His eyes suddenly narrow, “how’d you know that?”
“It’s in Joe Smith’s book,” says a reporter.
“You can’t believe nothin’…” Lewis mutters, his voice trailing off. “Well, that was 3 o’clock in the morning,” he suddenly adds, prompting explosive laughter from the journalists. “It really was,” he goes on with a grain.
“There was nobody out then—except this one policeman on a horse, and he was doing his dead-level best to catch us. Now, that was a sight. If anybody woulda saw that, we never woulda sold no more records. That woulda been the end of that.” Pause, his eyes narrowing again. “How’d you know that?”
“It’s in Joe Smith’s book,” the reporter repeats.
“Who’s Joe Smith?”
“The head of Capitol Records. Used to be head of Elektra Records.”
“Well, that’s ridiculous. That’s not right. Do you believe that?”
“You just told us it happened at 3 o’clock in the morning,” the reported notes.
“I can’t believe people will believe anything you say.”
“Well, is it true?” Another reporter asks.
“Yes. It’s true.”
Welcome, folks to talking with the Killer, a 54-year-old rock king dethroned before his time – in fact, before his prime – by the 1958 disclosure of a mad marriage to his 13-year-old second cousin.
The scandal caused Lewis, a Bible college dropout, to fall from rock ‘n’ roll grace into comparative oblivion – made all the more bruising by the fact that he was arguably the most intense performer, and most brilliant self-taught pianist, to ever rattle music stages around the world.”
From “THE KILLER BLOWS SMOKE FOR ‘FIRE’” by Jack Hurst and Country music. Chicago Tribune, June 24, 1989.
The second reference is from the book the reporter mentioned, actually, it’s called “Buddy Holly: Biography” by Ellis Amburn. In it, Ellis wrote that record executive Joe Smith and Jerry Lee spoke on the plane, during Buddy Holly, along with Paul Anka’s tour to Australia. They’d been drinking when Jerry Lee “confessed,” which is the word Ellis used. That yes, indeed, he and Elvis went on a naked motorcycle ride at 2:30 AM in Memphis, in a young Jerry Lee’s own words; “only for thirty-five or forty seconds, ‘round the corner and back.”
The third reference was from “Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story” by Rick Bragg. When asked the same question, instead of brushing it off or saying it wasn’t true. Jerry Lee laughed and said he can’t say anything about that because “Elvis isn’t here to defend himself.”
So, while Jerry Lee was right that you can’t believe everything anyone says, that doesn’t mean there aren’t patterns. Maybe, he thought it was funny to lie. Maybe, it happened and so what? It’s just two bros cruising down the street at night, naked on motorbikes, 5 feet apart – ‘cause they’re not gay. 😋
Other important lessons are if you do happen to go motorbiking naked with your supposed arch nemesis, don’t get caught, and don’t tell anyone about it!

Y’know what I’ve noticed? People always bash Hanna-Barbera for basing several of their characters off of celebrities (for example, Yogi was inspired by Art Carney, Jabberjaw was inspired by Curly from the Three Stooges, Wally Gator’s voice is an Ed Wynn impression). But Hanna-Barbera is hardly the only animation studio to base a cartoon character off a celebrity.
Look at Animaniacs. Yakko is based off of Groucho Marx, Wakko is a fusion of Ringo Starr and Harpo Marx, and Dot is based off Gilda Radner (and I think Zsa Zsa Gabor as well). The Brain is based off Orson Welles. Runt is based off Dustin Hoffman, Rita is basically Bernadette Peters as a cat, the Goodfeathers are based on Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci (and the Godpigeon is based on Marlon Brando). One recurring character is a blatant knockoff of Jerry Lewis.
Or how about The Simpsons? Chief Wiggum is based on Edward G. Robinson. Lou’s voice is based on Sylvester Stallone’s. Professor Frink is inspired by Jerry Lewis.
On top of that, Johnny Bravo is based on Elvis Presley. Shirley the Loon from Tiny Toon Adventures was based on Shirley MacLaine. Joy from Inside Out was modeled after Audrey Hepburn. Heck, I believe Bugs Bunny was inspired by Clark Gable. Not to mention the countless cartoon characters are parodies of Arnold Schwarzenegger, or whose voices are impressions of Ed Wynn or Peter Lorre.
I really don’t think it’s fair to give Hanna-Barbera a hard time for something other animation studios do and get zero flack for.

MARC RIBOT-THE JAZZ BINS

Today’s compilation:
The Sun CD Collection: Rock & Roll Originals Vol 1 1987 Rockabilly / Rock & Roll
Utmost respect for Sam Phillips and the early rock & roll and rockabilly empire that he was able to build at the Memphis-based Sun Records in the 50s. His label had Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Conway Twitty, Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins all on its roster during that decade. Just a total murderers' row of 50s rock that was highly integral to the history and evolution of popular music as we know it. Really can't beat it.
But this 1987 CD isn't just some tired, cash-grabbing retrospective that consists of some of Sun's biggest hits, although some songs on here, like Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes," did achieve great commercial success. What this release does is gather eleven separate 45s from the Sun archive that originally came out in the mid-50s and provide them on CD, many of them for the first time ever. So, purely for the sake of posterity, this is a pretty important disc.
However, while I'm sure these songs sounded fresh and newfangled when they first arrived, most of them don't really seem to have that same sparkle and luster today that they had six-plus decades ago. There's really just a lot of rock and roll and rockabilly on here that now sounds rudimentary and unimpressive. It's sort of like that scene in that Will Ferrell basketball movie, Semi-Pro, when he participates in the first ever alley-oop. It was quite a feat when it first happened, but you can see a bunch of alley-oops every night during the NBA season now. Those plays might not even make a highlight reel anymore. And lots of 50s rock compositions have a way of feeling similar as time passes on.
Some of these tunes still have the juice though, like both sides of Sonny Burgess' 1956 debut record, "Red Headed Woman," which was backed with "We Wanna Boogie." Burgess was given the nickname "The Wild Man From Arkansas" for a reason. He was responsible for making that 50s-type of rock and roll music that I love: the raucous, trashy, unpredictably raw kind; the primordial ooze that would go on to fuel to garage rock and then punk. Burgess' two songs here exemplify that freewheelingly nutty rock and roll spirit to a T. Plus, there's a uniquely froggy and gravelly fullness to his somewhat bizarre wailing. And he screams too. Gotta love it.
And another song worth talking about here is Smokey Joe's "The Signifying Monkey." It's the A-side to the only release he ever put out on Sun. Sam Phillips signed him because he thought his gravelly rasp could appeal to a black audience, despite the fact that Joe himself was white. And apparently it ended up fooling a lot of people, because the guy got invited to perform the song at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem! Imagine how that phone call must've went down when the jig was finally up 😂. And what appears to have made the whole ruse even more convincing is that Joe derived the story in his song from African folklore. Still though, despite all the controversy behind this novelty that'd get you lickety-split canceled if you tried to pull a fast one like it today, it's still a well-made early rock & roll tune.
Not blown away by most of the songs on this CD, even though over a third of them come courtesy of two of Sun's most important artists—Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison—but still managed to find a few that I can rock with almost 70 years after they were originally rolled out.

Mallow Hill sparks a bright light into modern-day blues and rock & roll creating music that melds together a mesmerizing symphony of raw emotion, pulsating rhythms, and electrifying melodies. The band channels an eclectic mix of musical inspiration including Gary Clark Jr, The Black Pumas, Marcus King Band, Led Zeppelin, and The Black Keys, among others, to shape their unique sonic identity. “Thinkin’ Bout My Baby” features a spellbinding bass line to accompany Mikayla Joseph’s sultry and powerful vocals, weaving a timeless narrative about personal growth amidst the tumult of toxic relationships, individuals, and habits. “’Thinkin’ Bout My Baby’ is about recognizing my own bad habits and patterns that were learned through toxic relationships and an unhealthy lifestyle and trying to heal, grow, and learn from them,”  says Mikayla Joseph.  “Writing this song and the album as a whole has been quite a healing experience for me.  It marks the beginning of finding out who I am as a writer and musician. Being able to write and use my voice to express my emotions, experiences, and trauma then turn them into songs I can share with the world is something I think every artist dreams of doing.” The name, Mallow Hill pays homage to the street in Baltimore where the band’s origin story began. The street “Mallow Hill” has always served a purpose as a headquarters for music creation and collaboration, with an open door policy that has been established by band leader and founder, Danny Gwinn.  This hub of musical creativity and collaboration eventually led to his introduction to Mikayla, helping to gradually shape the musical sound and soul that is Mallow Hill. It was this framework that led to the emergence and establishment of the band. After near sell out performances in and around the Baltimore, Virginia, Eastern Shore area, Mallow Hill have already gained a strong following in the region. They will be performing several dates this summer (see below) with more dates to be added soon. Mallow Hill is Mikayla Joseph (vocals), Danny Gwinn (guitar), Mac Dignam (keys), John Menefee (drums), and Chris Reynolds (bass, harmonica, vocals).
