Play for Today: Psy-Warriors (BBC, 1981)
"A bomb scare at Aldershot. I see. Attributed to the Provisional IRA."
"They haven't claimed responsibility."
"What if the bomb had gone off?"
"Then the Provisional IRA would've claimed responsibility. Well, why not, eh? We help keep the terrorist's cause in the public eye and the terrorist helps us justify the need for greater security. What's called a symbiotic relationship, I believe."

My favorite bit from this great radio drama, and one of the main proofs of the added value an audio drama can have vis a vis an audiobook.

John Arthur Duttine - b. 1949
One of our great, unsung actors, I've been watching John Duttine since the BBC series "To Serve Them All my Days" (1980). More recently he portrayed Sergeant George Miller in "Heartbeat" (ITV 1992-2010) from 2005 until the series' end. That's what I'll concentrate on here: Sgt Miller in full period police uniform and black leather gloves. Would you expect anything else?
Here, a series publicity still, looking stern, as he usually did (although he later turned out to have a more sentimental side).
This time it's the villain threatening him with a revolver who's wearing the leather gloves (although I seem to recall that, in this scene, they both were). Shame I couldn't have found a picture of the two handsome, gloved men.
And, finally, Sgt Miller in action, making his arrest, hat askew, and calling base on his car radio with leather glove front and centre. Beautiful.

From the Triffids to Blake’s 7 and Ghostwatch: the BBC’s greatest cult classics
John Wyndham’s novels often get described as “cosy catastrophes”, but there was nothing cosy about this adaptation starring John Duttine and Emma Relph set in an abandoned and unruly London. The sound effects of the triffids can still raise the hairs on the back of the necks of people of a certain age.

REVIEW: Day of the Triffids – Episode 2 (1981)
REVIEW: Day of the Triffids – Episode 2 (1981)
Egads! It has it been a while since I looked at this series, and I know that I should do more seeing that it brings the most traffic to my blog than any other topic! I had previously stated how thrilled I was that Netflix was carrying the show, and that they had a big selection of such material. I guess the people who make sure we don’t have any fun saw my glowing praise and the show was gone…
