This is a mixture of shower thoughts fic and lying in bed after taking a sleep aid fic, so is it good? who knows. but apparently ao3 is down so enjoy! lol
Warning: not proofread at all.
the band has been working diligently to make a name for themselves and while they have a decent following, they’ve all had to take day jobs
on one of the days they are all working, julie almost misses a call form a record label that recently saw them perform and would like to sign them on
she says she is excited by their offer but would need to speak to the rest of the band first, to which they are understanding and even offer to email a pdf of the first draft of the contract to them to review and they can set up a time to meet if things look satisfactory
she rattles off the band email before ending the call and texts the band group chat before heading back to work after her break
“a label wants to sign us! contract in band email. can’t wait to go over it with you guys! <3 <3″
she feels her phone buzz with an incoming response as she’s walking back to the front of the store she works at and quickly checks it.
L- yes! rock n roll hall of fame, here we come!
as she is reading that, another texts arrives and she laughs at Luke’s impatience
L- emails not there yet :(
back at the front, the afternoon rush hits and julie doesn’t have time to check her phone, but she’s felt it go off several times in her work apron and, while she’s never hated the customer service industry, she absolutely cannot keep a giant smile off her face the whole rest of her shift
so she’s a bit blindsided when she finally gets to check her phone again as she grabs her things from her work locker and the first message she sees is
L- I’m not signing this.
it must be a real bad deal then. her heart sinks as she continues reading
A- ?
R- oooo bad money deal?
L- money is fine.
L- not a good fit for the band
A- how do you mean?
luke didn’t respond and the next message comes 20 minutes later
A- F that. i’m not signing either
R- guys. what is going on?
R- oh
R- okay, yeah no
by now Julie’s anxiety is starting to climb because how could it not be a good fit? this label is known for signing bands in the pop-punk genre. What on earth would make the guys turn this opportunity down? an opportunity they have worked blood, sweat, tears and years to get. How could they dismiss it so easily?
she needs some time to think (but does she really? it’s the anxiety talking) so instead of responding, she pulls her bag strap over her shoulder and begins walking towards the exit, tying her hair up in a real messy bun to keep herself from picking at her fingernails
The clouds in the sky are pinkish purple against the darkening sky as the sun is low enough to be blocked by the surrounding buildings. heat still emits off the parking lot pavement, alluding to the Hot summer days thar have fallen upon the city.
Julie takes a deep breath before heading to the employee parking
Luke is leaning against the back of her car
"Luke? What are you doing here? Is everyone okay?!"
"Yea, Boss. Everyone's fine," he reassures her before pulling her into a hug. "I just wanted to see that million dollar smile."
Julie can't help but smile
She holds him tighter as her thoughts quickly jump back to the contract. She questions him about the group chat. How could they possibly all be saying no?
His arms tense around her, before letting her pull back to look at his face. He reveals that the contract actually starts off pretty decent. The label just had one stipulation that was a deal-breaker.
What? What could possibly be a deal-breaker when the rest is that good?
"If we sign it, they'd be able to force the band to undergo cosmetic dentistry."
"Oh." Her stomach drops. She wants to look away from the boy she's described as having the perfect smile. Alex and Reggie are basically right there with him. She forces her hands to stay put, but they scream to cover her mouth, her face. Her eyes drift down and stop on his Adam's apple. This is about her.
One of his hands gently cups the side of her face, tilting it so she is looking up at him again. His eyes are sad.
She can't stand it. She can feel tears welling in her eyes "I- I could do it."
He's shaking his head vehemently before she can finish. "No, Jules! You are perfect and beautiful just as you are. If they can't see it, then they aren't the label for us."
"But-"
His other hand moves up to cup her face in his hands.
"Be who you are, don't compromise, julie. Fuck them."
Julie is overwhelmed in that moment. Tears break free of her lashes, but a laugh rings out as she pulls his face to hers.
His lips ground her and she cant believe how lucky she is to have such a supportive boyfriend. She pulls back and remembers the others immediate refusal to sign as well. She couldn't ask for a better band and family. She thanks her mom for the millionth time for bring them to her.
She sniffles from the tears but a smile is back on her face as she teases him. "Did you quote our own song at me just now? What a dork."
He's grinning back. "Well, the gal who wrote that line is pretty smart."
He pulls her to the passenger door "let's go home"

Julie’s driving when the music cuts out and her dad’s face pops up on the dash accompanied by the ringtone she set for him.
“Crap.” She tilts her head towards the backseat. “Guys! Shut up. It’s my dad!”
Loud hushing drifts forward from where her ghosts are hanging out, and she glances nervously over at Flynn in the passenger seat. Pressing the button to accept the call, she opts for a casual tone. “Hey Dad!”
“Julie.” There is a weighty pause. He doesn’t sound happy, but he’s not yet mad either.
“Yes, Papi?”
“It’s 10pm,” he prompts.
Julie doesn’t have a chance to answer before Reggie loudly says in a faux posh voice “Do you know where your children are?”
All three boys devolve into snickers.
“I-- what?”
Irritation tinges his tone now as her dad repeats himself.
“I said, it’s 10pm.”
This time it’s Luke’s voice going into a dry monotone “ Do you know where your children are?”
Their laughter gets louder as both Luke and Reggie go back and forth changing up the voices they use “It’s 10pm. Do you know where your children are?” and Alex was beginning to wheeze, he was laughing so hard.
“This is so weird,” she quietly says to Flynn before trying to focus back on her dad who is definitely going to get more mad the longer she doesn’t answer him.
“Uhh. Yeah... Sorry! We got a bit lost when the gps kept taking us to a closed road. But we got it all fixed! And we are on our way right now.”
She can hear him let out a big breath. “Geez, mija. Call me next time if you know you are going to be late. Don’t make an old man worry.”
“IT”S 10PM. DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE?”
Julie winces at the volume from the backseat. “I’m sorry. And you aren’t that old.”
His chuckle is drowned out by the peanut gallery behind her. “I feel like it some days. You’re on your way?”
“20 minutes.”
“Okay. Drive safe. I love you.”
“Love you too, Dad.”
The phone hangs up and the music starts back up. Flynn watches Julie flinch again.
"What is happening??"
Julie hears a hand smacking an arm over and over as Alex's voice, nearly shrieking from his laughter, requests "Do- haha- do Cyndi Lauper now!"
Julie responds to Flynn, "I have no idea. I feel like I'm having a stroke."
A shrill nasaly falsetto rings out, "DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE?"

Happy New Year!
I wrote a little somethin' somethin' for the ladies in my group chat. Thanks for always encouraging my tangents ^_^
Do You Smell Something Burning?
Read on AO3
Snippet Below
_____________________
Her professor has given them a rare in-class period to work on their final projects when Julie feels her phone start buzzing with incoming notifications, derailing her train of thought. It won't hurt to check it for just a second. Tapping the screen to wake it up, she sees it's the building group chat again.
The Building 🏠
Bernadette (neighbor) 5:23pm Does it smell like something is burning?
Luke, Pizza Killer 🍕🔪 5:24pm f 5:24pm it's our pizza
Julie chokes down a laugh, trying not to draw the attention of her classmates.
5:24pm again?! 🤣🤣🤣
(310) 555-1442 5:24pm 😭
Luke, Pizza Killer 🍕🔪 5:25pm i'm sorry reggie -_-
Julie's professor clears their throat from the desk they are sitting at. It's a polite reminder that she should be working right now, not on her phone. She throws a grin in their direction as she locks her phone and slips it back into her pocket. Then she picks her pen back up and gets back to working on her project.
When class is over, she quickly checks back into the chat.
(323) 555-9673 5:29pm 5:29pm dude
Flynnigan and again and again 5:30pm
Tumblr media
Bernadette (neighbor) 5:33pm How did you do that, Flynn? Will you show me?
Flynnigan and again and again 5:33pm lol 5:33pm sure B
And when Julie arrives home, all of the windows in the bottom right apartment are open yet again, airing the place out.

Ray has always been a bit scatterbrained. It was honestly one of the traits that endeared his sweet Rose to him when they were dating, and teasing him as he searched for an item he just had was one of her favorite past times during their marriage. But after she died, it got worse. All thanks to the insomnia. As if suddenly being a single parent wasn’t difficult enough, suddenly he was misplacing his keys, resulting in being consistently late to things. He would forget to go grocery shopping and they ordered pizza way too often. He constantly had Victoria and other well meaning people asking if everything was okay? Did he need help?
He just needed some sleep. But each night he would lay down, toss and turn, doze for an hour or two and then be wide awake for hours. The only upside was he was awake when Carlos or Julie needed him, overwhelmed by their grief in the dark of night during those first months.
As time passed, as they healed together, things got easier. He learned to buy tomato sauce and spaghetti in bulk for the times he forgot to go grocery shopping, and he’d finally given in to Victoria’s offers of help with meals as well. He still misplaced things more often than before, but his kids, his beautiful kids, helped him out wearing the same teasing smirks his Rose used to give him. And slowly, he was sleeping longer, deeper, than he had in months.
It’s when Julie gets kicked out of the music program that he starts having sleepless nights again. It’s been difficult watching her struggle with music all this time, but he didn’t realize how much he was struggling watching it, not knowing how to help her, until the school made their decision.
It’s different from before. For starters, it’s not every night, it wasn’t even that first night after Julie had started cleaning out the garage. And even when he heard her play the next morning, and he felt more peace and relief than he had in forever, he still would find himself unable to fall asleep some nights. Victoria notices the bags under his eyes and he can tell she’s worried that he’s backsliding in his progress, so he is quick to assure her it’s not the same this time. It feels like when he was there for his kids, even though he’s alone. He will toss and turn until finally giving up and walking down into the kitchen or into the den to his home computer. He talks to Rose sometimes, other times just musing his thoughts aloud. And the strange thing is eventually, almost like a physical feeling, he knows he can go back to his bed and will sleep through the rest of the night.
It’s one such night as he has given in to make a middle of the night grilled cheese, narrating what he has learned the past year to do and not do to get the perfect sandwich, that he hears the gentle thumps of Julie’s footsteps coming down the stairs. He can tell because Carlos practically does a control fall down the stairs he moves so fast, while Julie usually isn’t in any rush.
“Everything okay, Julie?” he asks before she’s even rounded the banister. He slides the spatula under the grilled cheese and lifts it over to the plate he has waiting.
“Yeah. Just getting a glass of wa-” she cuts off as she rounds the corner, staring at the counter opposite the stove. Her gaze lingers for a long moment, before moving to the sandwich he was now cutting in half into triangles. “-ter. Everything okay here?”
“Yeah. Just felt like a late night snack. Want half?” he offers.
She smiles but shakes her head, gaze drifting back to the counter across from him, before she makes her way over to the sink to fill a glass with water. “No thanks. Just water for me tonight.”
Ray shrugs, taking a bite. He leans against the counter and watches his daughter, his heart swelling at the huge steps she’s taken these past weeks. As she turns back, he reaches out to intercept her, pulling her to his side with one arm. He places a kiss on the top of her head. “I am so proud of you, Mija.”
Her arm squeezes him back, not letting go as she drinks her water and he eats his sandwich, both looking forward across the stove and counter both lost in their own thoughts. Suddenly a giant smiles grows on her face and she looks up at him. “You’re a good dad. I’m lucky you’re mine.”
“I’m the lucky one to have such great kids. Where did that come from?” She steps out from his side and grabs the second half of his sandwich.
“It’s late, Papi. You should go to sleep.”
He opens his mouth to argue, but then that feeling overtakes him. The one that says he’ll be able to fall asleep. “I think you mean we should go to sleep. It’s a school night.”
She laughs at him as she bites into the sandwich and heads for the stairs.

It’s early when Luke poofs into Julie’s room. He can hear her voice in his head saying “boundries!” clear as day, but he can’t help but want to be near. Last night they thought they would crossover, or jolted out of existence, but instead they’d remained. They’d hugged Julie and it was amazing. But he had had the chance to hold her face in his hands, thumbs caressing her cheeks, and the memory of her soft skin beneath his fingers, of her own hands gently holding his face, ran on repeat all night after she went inside to bed.
The sun was just barely beginning to light the room. He could hear Julie’s soft breathing as he took a few steps around the side of the bed. She was still asleep, laying on her stomach with one arm tucked close and the other resting above her head on the pillow. Her face was obscured by wild curls going every which way and Luke’s hands are itching to move them. To brush them away from her forehead and tuck them behind her ear. To gently sweep his fingers along her jaw as he brings his hand back.
He freezes, suddenly worried that the night before was a fluke and he will phase through her like before. So it’s with a mix of trepidation and anticipation that he reaches out, hand slightly shaking, to act out his thoughts and desires from moments before. Better to figure this out now when he doesn’t have to see the disappointment on Julie’s face.
It takes a second to register the soft feeling of her hair against his finger tips, but once it does, he has zero hesitation to continue the move and brush it away from her face. She looks beautiful and he can’t resist the urge to press a soft kiss against her forehead. As he leans back, her brown eyes are watching him. Again, he remembers he should have waited to come in here and he pulls his hands back from her. But the hand she’d had tucked near her chin catches his before it gets too far and he can see her brain starting to shed the layers of sleep as she wakes up. A small crease appears in her brow.
“Is everything okay?” Her fingers squeeze his lightly but the pressure builds the faster she wakes up. Crap. He didn’t mean to worry her.
“Yeah. I was looking for the kitchen,” he smiles down at her, squeezing her hand back. “Took a detour.”
She relaxes back into the bed with his words and readjusts her grip on him, now tugging at his arm to bring him closer. “If you stay with me, I’ll help you find it after my alarm goes off.”
Unable to resist her, he lays down on the bed. Their hands still hold the other between them. “Of course, Julie. I’ll stay as long as you like.”

Let's Name This Fic Like It's A 2000s Fall Out Boy Song
Tumblr media
The familiar sound of a creaking door opening greets her as the list of all of her friends pops up on the right side of the screen. Almost instantly a second window pops up, accompanied by the chat sound that sends a thrill through her veins.
skyrockernotwalker: a/s/l?
A grin spreads across her face. What an idiot, she thinks. He already knows the answers. He'd asked the same thing the first time they spoke in the AOL chat room they'd both stumble into months ago. It was supposed to be a room to talk about music but they quickly realized that most people there didn't want to talk about it the way they did and had added each other as buddies to chat privately.

Happy Juke Jeudi!
After 4 days of crazy writing inspiration, i was kind of hoping to have this WIP finished to upload today. but I sabotaged it reading fanfic to the wee hours of the morning the other night, and i'm still dealing with the real world repercussions of that. Uploading today is just not feasible BUT that doesn't mean i can't share something. MWAhahahaha. Enjoy this small, not really edited excerpt from it.
--------------------------------
She almost thrusts the eggs at him. His smile as he grabs three eggs makes her knees a teensy bit weak. And then he turns his body to throw them, one-two-three, arms fully displayed, muscles flexing and her mouth goes a bit dry. He turns back to her expectantly and she panics the moment their eyes connect. Did he see her checking him out? Quickly turning to face the windows, she inspects the egg damage. It looks a lot better coverage now.
"That settles it. I need you," she says, turning back to him. His grin gets bigger and she registers what she said. She tries to salvage the sentence by continuing, but now the pause has gone on so long it doesn't really help. "tooo help me throw eggs. Youuu."
Somebody kill her. Her face is so hot with embarrassment. Luke bites his bottom lip but nods, his grin never dropping.
"Well I'm yours for the night," his eyes drift up to the sky, before settling over on her again. "However, wherever, you need me."
He didn't just say that. It's a good thing it's dark because Julie just knows her face is flushed.
"Just...," she knocks her shoulder into his arm. "Just shut up and throw eggs. Please."

----------------------------------------------------------
Excerpt under the cut
Julie made a mistake. It happened... occasionally.
Look, Tetris has never been her game. And all of her instruments have custom bags with nice fitted slots for them to go into. So how was she to realize the six dozen eggs she just bought wouldn't fit in the reusable grocery bag she'd brought with her? The cartons were just barely too long to sit properly in the bottom so she couldn't even use the darn thing to carry a couple of them lest a carton open up and eggs start breaking inside the bag. She needs like an egg carton... crate or something. She glares at the store's bags fluttering in the air conditioning, taunting her with their ability to hold a carton of eggs. She doesn't have any cash to pay for them and the store has a minimum for card.
Sighing, she loops the handles of her bag up to her elbow and slowly starts stacking the cartons in her arms. Guess she will have to GusGus her way out of this one. It's going to take her so long to get back to Flynn. Tucking the last carton under her chin, she slowly brings her hand back down to add support to the bottom of the stack. Then slowly, carefully, she makes her way towards the exit of the store.
The doors slide open at her approach and hot summer air hits her, accompanied by the thrumming chords of a guitar from Luke, the guy that likes to busk near this corner shop in Malibu. He was a nice guy, easy on the eyes. Very. Easy. Julie had stopped many times to listen/talk to him when she was in the area to hang out at Carrie's. Anger floods her at the thought of her now ex-friend.
The guitar screeched to an abrupt stop.
"Whoa, Julie. Do you need help?"
She pauses and considers, but doesn't want to impose. She knows he needs the money he makes from busking to get things for his band.
"O-oh, no. I've got it." She takes another step forward, her shoe immediately catching on a parking block, and she's suddenly tilting forward. Of course this is how she is to go. In a pile of raw eggs in a parking lot on a humid night in front of the guy she's been crushing on for months now. Of course.
Hands catch her shoulders, preventing that sad reality from happening. "Are you sure about that, boss? I don't mind walking with you."
Heat flames her cheeks at the teasing tone, but she doesn't have time to let her embarrassment dictate her actions right now. So, reluctantly looking up at him, she relents. The moment their eyes make contact, the corners of his lips lift up in a soft smile. Despite all the twisted emotions running within her, her stomach flutters.
"Yeah, that'd be helpful. Thanks."
"Let me just.." He gestures behind him at his guitar case awkwardly, before rushing to pack up his things. Slinging the case to his back, he steps back up to her. "Alright, give me half."
She shifts her feet. "I think you will have to take them from me. Something is bound to fall if I move."
"Oh, right!" He quickly, but carefully, takes the top three cartons from her. "Lead the way!"
Julie nods her head to the left. "It's that way."
They walk in silence for a few minutes. Julie's thoughts bounce between her anger and frustrations, and the boy walking next to her whose eyes burn into her every time they glance over. She has no clue what's she is going to say to Flynn when they arrive. Eventually, he decides to ask the question that's apparently been on the tip of his brain since she exited the store.
"Are you guys having, like, a bake sale or something?"
She smirks humorlessly, turning onto the street with the gradual hill upwards. Walls now line the manicured lawns instead of a sidewalk, forcing them to walk in the street. The further they travel, the larger the houses beyond those walls gets.
"Not exactly." Her reply hangs between them. She knows she should offer more explanation than that, but maybe the less he knows the better. Instead, she asks, "What have you been working on recently?"
An elated grin spreads across Luke's face before he jumps right into talking about the latest songs he's been working on. It's actually quite pleasant. The last vestiges of the sun setting, a cool breeze offsetting the heat radiating from the pavement of the street. The attention of her crush smiling down at her. It would be perfect any other night.
The curve of the street eventually reveals a figure with a large package waiting out front of one of the mansions.
"Jules!" Flynn's figure steps out from the shadows of the property's wall. "What took you so long? What's Luke doing here?"
Luke answers before Julie can. "Hey! I insisted on helping after Julie almost immediately dropped all these eggs in the parking lot."
Flynn shoots Julie an unimpressed raised eyebrow. Julie shrugs her shoulders, minding not to jostle the eggs too much. While the girls are silently communicating, Luke's gaze seems to have registered the package at Flynn's feet is an 18-pack of toilet paper and begins to bounce back and forth between it and the eggs. The toilet paper, then the eggs in his arms, back to the toilet paper, to the eggs in Julie's arms, comprehension registers on his face.
"Whoa. What did someone do to piss you two off?"

Look at that alliteration. did i use google translate until i found a language that had a translation of “in progress” that started with a ‘j’? yes. was it happenstance that it was korean, the language of all the k-dramas Imène has been coercing me to watch, to be the first i found? also, yes. anyway. i just wanted to post something that might motivate me to continue working on it so here we are.

"The train will arrive momentarily. Please stay behind the yellow line until it comes to a complete stop."
Julie doesn't even glance up from her phone as she hears the train's rumbling approach bouncing off the tunnel wall, the brakes screeching as they engage. Stale air ruffles her hair as it bursts from the tunnel and comes to a stop at the platform. When she hears the hiss of the doors sliding open, she finally puts her phone away and waits for passengers to disembark before she makes her way into the third car from the end.
It's always the third to last car. The front cars fill quick with people too lazy to walk further along the platform, tired from their days, or maybe they just really like standing too close to people. The last car is also out. Something about the extremes, if you can't be in the front, go to the back. Or maybe the social ladder rules from primary school have too strong a hold on them. Cool kids are at the back. The back of the bus. The back of the classroom. The back of the train. Doesn't really matter, the point is that it's full too. Julie's not judging, but she sure as hell isn't joining them when the third car from the back has space to at least pretend you have a personal bubble.
Seeing an empty seat on the bench in the middle, she sits down, slipping her second earbud into her ear. It's going to be 25 minutes before she arrives at her station. She might as well use that time for her music. Moving to her personal discography, she presses play before pulling out her half size notebook. She turns the pages until she comes to a blank one. This particular melody had assaulted her last week and while she had managed to flesh out the chords over the weekend, creating a solid basis to start with, the words haven't come yet. So, she will listen to it on repeat for the remainder of her commute and see what the music tells her it's to be about. Thankfully, this isn't Julie's usual writing process. It's much more likely for her to have the words first and the melody comes days, weeks, or even years later. Only occasionally will the words will come holding hands with the melody from the get go. No, melody first isn't her usual. But these songs tend to be more satisfying to complete. Figuring out what they are about is like befriending someone's pet at a party. It's shy, but with patience and gentle coaxing, you will be rewarded.
Two stops later, Julie's eyes stray from the notebook up to the doors. She watches for him. She doesn't know his name, but he started sharing a commute with her about a month ago. He always gets on two stops after her. He also has a preference for the third car from the back. And he's hot. Look, It's not like Julie is constantly rating her fellow commuter's attractiveness. The loud colored beanies he wears over his shaggy brown hair, and the ridiculous cut-off shirts displaying very toned arms, along with a soft covered guitar slung across his back, just kind of...snags a girl's attention. But Julie got over that pretty quick. No, the reason she watches for him each day has nothing to do with his being "eye candy", as Flynn would call him, but because of his shirts. It's like he has an infinite number of cut-off shirts each with a more ridiculous band name than the last. Julie likes to play a game and guess the genre before googling them. She has perfected the art of looking while not looking like she's looking. Oof. That was a sentence.
The doors slide shut with a small rattle she can just barely hear over the piano notes in her ears. Huh. He must not be here today. Julie focuses back down on her notebook page. It's still pretty bare, only a few shorthand notes about changing a progression here and holding a chord a beat longer there. The song starts over just as the rhythmic sounds of the train on the tracks gets louder, someone moving from the car ahead to this one. Looking up, hazel eyes lock with hers. It's him. He's carrying a paper grocery bag in one arm, his guitar slung across his back like usual. And hanging of his right arm is a small elderly woman, slowly shuffling forward. The man is the only thing keeping her upright as the car sways back and forth. The corners of his mouth lift before his gaze drops down to the woman he's helping, saying something to her as he guides her to the empty bench at the front of the car. The magic of third car from the back. It rarely ever disappoints. Once she is sitting, he sets the grocery bag down next to her, then he grabs onto the handhold right next to her. They continue to converse, and Julie doesn't realize she is staring until he glances over and they make eye contact again. Flushing, she directs her head to look down once more. Her eyes followed a half beat behind, so she could glimpse his shirt for the day.
My Goose Has a Knife
Julie barely contains a snort. It's probably some alternative band. Pulling her phone out of her pocket, she navigates to google. A youtube channel is one of the top results. It's a local Folk Metal band. Oh wow! They have a hurdy gurdy! Pausing her music, she watches their top videos for the remainder of her ride. She quickly packs her notebook away and removes an earbud when she feels the brakes begin to engage, and she stands up as the tunnel wall outside the windows is exchanged for bright lights and the bustle of people. Calves engage as the train comes to a stop, holding her balance, and Julie chances one last glimpse at him. His easy smile as he comfortably stands there talking to the woman makes her heart skip, just for a moment, before she exits the train and begins the walk home to her apartment.

More Than a Long Weekend
Making of Sunset Curve's Sophomore Album
(note from me, missjoolee. i have no clue how this happened. but it’s a spiral that ripped itself from my being that i’ve decided to spruce up just a touch [with some very good additions from my group chat 😘] and post. I don’t have the energy or time to fully flesh it all out for a full fic, but i decided i could at least write a scene to accompany the rest. hope you all enjoy!)
sunset curve released a stellar freshman album. they had a big tour and for their next one, the label wants to do a mini documentary of that process
Ray is the head videographer and producer of the film team.
Julie was originally just there as his assistant, but her knowledge of the music creation process had her making suggestions of what types of questions to ask, milestones to film, and Ray decided to take  a step back and have her "run the show" so to speak
which you can tell something changes because in the first week or so of one on one interviews, all the guys are kinda nervous, but then they suddenly are much more chill and smile more
Julie is constantly talking to the guys to keep them briefed on what the crew will be doing at any given time, explaining why whenever necessary, and the crew (and the rest of the band) slowly become aware of a blossoming something between her and the lead singer
cue the jim halpert looking directly into the camera moments from Reggie and Alex whenever luke goes off on a enthused tangent while speaking to julie. Cue the crew filming Julie's briefs with the band just so they don't miss any of the looks traded between the two
cue the crew and the band using their phones to sneak footage whenever they stumble upon a soft moment
Ray was surprised at first by all the extra down time footage that was getting recorded at first but then realizes whats happening. so instead of all that footage hitting the cutting room floor, it all gets put in a separate folder. suddenly, he's covertly pulling the guys in for private interviews. he's doing the same with the crew to talk about juke moments (if they want to) (Reggie jumps IMMEDIATELY onto dragging the smitten luke through the mud. telling stories of dumb things Luke has done because he was trying to impress julie)
and then he pulls luke and julie in separately to record a sort of "evaluation" of the documentary process (How was your experience with our crew? Julie took the reigns early on, how was it, working with her?)(julie's was more like the usual interview, talking on her experiences working with the different members of the band. a lot of questions were fishing for candid comments about luke)(and a lot of the more professional questions/answers do get used for SC's documentary)
then the album release is fast approaching. Julie is super proud of these boys. she knows the album is going to fly up the charts. but there is melancholy as after the release party, the documentary crew will move onto the next thing. She has all of the guy's numbers (having had to call all of them at some point to be like "where the hell are you? we are supposed to be doing this") and she's been texting Luke about a lot more non work related things recently.
but she doesn't know if that will keep up once she's not seeing them every week
Just prior to the release, the guys have a concert where they plan to debut one of their new songs. The crew is there because of this. the crowd is told that it's being recorded. Julie is hanging out side stage. Luke can see her getting into the music from his spot at the front of the stage.
Luke loves it when he can see the crowd singing along to one of his songs. It's even better when he can hear them almost drowning him out even with the mic. It's amazing when they are getting into a song so new, they've never heard it before but can really feel it. But as they debut their latest single, he discovers he was wholly unprepared for the emotions coursing through him after glancing to the side and seeing Julie belting the lyrics along with him. The only one in thousands. The lights doused her in pink, red, blue and yellow, gleaming off the luscious curls he's daydreamed about running his fingers through more than once. Her smile is so big he can't help but return it before looking back to the front.
Dread flashes through him, tingling along every nerve ending and taking up residence in his stomach. "It's almost over." His body goes on autopilot, stepping back from the mic and looking at his hands move along the frets for the change up between the chorus and the second verse, as he wrestles with his mind to focus on finishing the song. Luckily the muscle memory from all the rehearsals they've been doing in preparation allow his mind to wander a bit, but turning back to the crowd let's him push it to the back of his mind until the song comes to an end. He walks back to the drumkit riser where there are bottles of water sitting for him and takes a moment. He can hear Reggie talking to the crowd, giving him a small reprieve, but he's not concentrating on that as he re-hydrates and uses a small towel to wipe the sweat off his face. His brain is whirling because up until now, the thought of the documentary crew finishing up their work has always been something in distant future. But now, the album is done. The final milestones of the process are about to happen and then they will be saying goodbye to the documentary team that has been with them this past last year. He'll have to say goodbye to Julie, and he really really really doesn't want that.
Alex does a small drum beat, mostly with the kick drum, right next to Luke's ear to let him know he's noticed something is up but to knock it off and get out of his head to continue the show. That's right! He can figure this all out later. He still has time. All he can do right now is engage with the crowd and put on a killer show for them.
The rest of the set goes great. Luke is able to refocus having determined he'll figure out what to do about Julie later, his energy bouncing back up to 120%. He still finds his eyes glancing over to Julie often. Her smiles always widening when she notices, causing his to as well.
Once the final chords ring out, he's breathing hard, grinning from ear to ear as the crowd roars their approval. He pulls the guitar strap over his head and hands his guitar to one their roadies. They wave to the crowd, Reggie and him throwing the remaining picks from their mic stand supply to the fans. Alex comes from behind his kit to toss his drumsticks as well. Luke basks in the adrenaline, the sounds, before flinging his arms around his boy's shoulders and taking a bow together to the continued roar.
Patting them on the back once they are standing up again, they all turn and head offstage to where Julie is waiting with a giant grin on her face, pride lighting up ever feature. Luke doesn't even think, he just makes his way directly over to her. Her grin begins to drop slightly in confusion, not understanding the intense purpose of his stride. He stops in front of her, his brain just barely beginning to catch up with his actions but he's made it here and he's not about to let it talk him out of this. He reaches up and cups her cheek in his palm, hesitating. The confusion leaves her eyes and they begin to sparkle. It can't just be the reflection of the stage lights, can it? Her grin creeps back up and that's gotta be a good sign, so he takes the plunge dipping his head down to kiss her. She immediately pushes up into the kiss, standing on her toes. Her hands drift up his chest like live wires to help her keep balance. He'd thought nothing could beat the high of an amazing performance but this, this moment with Julie, is euphoric in comparison.
Neither of them remember that there is a whole crew of people recording. They both miss the glance between Reggie, Alex, and one of the cameras. The same glance they've missed every time they've gotten lost in conversation while the cameras were rolling. They don't hear the cheers from some of the crew, drowned out by the still roaring crowd, celebrating this turn of events after months of watching the two's feelings for one another grow.
It takes Alex's snapback hitting him in the back of the head for Luke to pull away, his eyes not straying once from hers. He watches as her eyes drift behind him and suddenly her face comes crashing to hide against his chest. Looking behind him, he sees the cameras, and behind them, Ray, and he can't help but feel a smidge embarrassed. Not enough to wipe the smile off his face or dampen the happiness coursing though him right now though. Glancing back down, Julie's curls are all he can see and this time he doesn't have to dream. He gently runs his fingers along them to try and get her to show her face again. She doesn't, but he can feel her smile pressed over his heart and that works for him too.
anyway. the documentary comes out and it does well. but then years later after they get engaged, all of her coworkers show up to the party with giant grins on their faces
and Ray interrupts the festivities to announce he has a surprise for the couple.
they are presented with a high quality documentary of the beginnings of their relationship. WITH interviews.
there are even milestones from personal cameras. not just from that beginning time, but from other moments throughout their relationship
they are in love. everyone knew it was happening. and they are super grateful getting to watch it happen all over again

For the physical intimacy prompts - Resting your head in your partner's lap. Only if you feel like it! <3
(I WAS ALMOST IN BED. I ALMOST WAS UNDER THE COVERS AND THEN THIS SAID “NO. GO WRITE THE JUKE. GO WRITE FOR THE JEUDI.” AND THEN I DID)
Writing has always been Julie’s way of addressing her feelings. The ones she is sure of tend to make their way to her notebook, or Luke’s, but it’s the ones she is unsure of, that she’s testing the waters on what words are best to describe how she feels, that find their way to her dream box. And recently, she’s been having... thoughts. Ones she’s not sure of. Ones that definitely cannot find their way into a notebook a certain band-mate might see. She’s feeling pretty confident that allowing the words to stew for a few days in her dream box, settle into her bones, will bring her clarity. She just has to trust the process.
It’s as she’s folding the scrap of paper and reaching up to grab the box that she glimpses lights on down in the studio. That’s odd because she knows she turned them off when the band called it quits for the day, having to get home for family dinners and do homework for the next day. Glancing at the clock, she sees it’s after 10:30, way past curfew for any of them on a school night.
It’s probably nothing. She grabs her phone and heads out of her bedroom. There is no reason to suspect that someone has broken in. Lots of people have access to the studio, the guys are constantly in and out of the building. She probably just missed a text or something. She taps on the screen of her phone to check. Nothing. Okay, so maybe it’s not one of the guys but that doesn’t mean that it’s anyone dangerous! Maybe a homeless person wandered in, all she’d have to do is ask them politely to leave. It’s really probably not a thief. Oh god, but what if it was?! There is a lot of expensive equipment in there. And the whole neighborhood knows! It’s not like they’ve tried to hide the fact that the band practices there. By now, she’s made it to the bottom of the stairs and maybe she should just grab the bat out of Carlos’ baseball bag. Just as a precaution.
After she steps out of the house and closes the door gently behind her, she calls Flynn.
“Hey, Underachiever! The calculus homework giving you problems? Eyy? Get it? Problems?”
“Flynn!” Julie whisper shouts as she starts creeping along the path around the house. “There is someone in the studio!”
“Wha- Call someone then!”
“I called you!”
“Jules, I mean like the cops or something! What good is it calling me?”
“I’m not going to call the cops,” Julie argues. “What if it’s one of the guys? Besides, if anything happens, you’ll know right away and can call the cops then!”
She can feel the unimpressed stare she knows Flynn would be giving her if she could. She slowly unlatches the gate and slips through.
“You better not be saying that you are going in. Alone. We have watched too many horror movies to be doing something that stupid, Julie!”
“I have a baseball bat!” Julie winces. That sounded a lot more helpful in her head. “Everything will be fine, Flynn. Calling you was just a precaution.”
The moonlight glints off something wedged between the retaining wall and the trash bins. She keeps low as she speed walks over to investigate, Flynn’s voice going into detail on how bad a plan this is. A bike leans against the wall. One she recognizes for the Blink-182 and New Found Glory stickers near the handlebars.
Standing up straight, she interrupts Flynn. “It’s Luke... I gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She hangs up before Flynn can respond and tucks her phone into the pocket on the front of her hoodie. Cracking the studios door open isn’t as quiet as she hopes and Luke is already jumping up from the couch and approaching the piano, his back to her, by the time the gap is large enough to walk through.
“Luke? What are you doing here?” Her voice only holds curiosity but she can see how stiffly he’s holding his whole body. One of his hands moves up to his face but he doesn’t turn to face her. Something is wrong. She slowly drifts closer. His hand drops down onto the lid of the piano before he responds with a tight,
“Ah, sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb anyone.”
“Is everything okay?” She takes another step towards him. And another.
“Y-yeah.” It sounds like his voice is getting caught in his throat with the word. “Ev-everything’s fine.”
Julie’s right behind him now and he’s still facing away from her. She reaches out and gently grabs onto his forearm, lightly pulling him to turn towards her. There’s the barest resistance before he gives in, shoulders slumping. Red rimmed eyes meet hers and her heart is breaking for him. For whatever situation is causing his eyes to brim with tears and breathe in a quiet sob.
“I didn’t have anywhere else to go,” he shakily lets out before it becomes too much and the tears begin to fall.
His body shakes as the tears become rivers, flowing down his cheeks, dripping off his chin. Julie doesn’t let go of his arm and pulls him back over to the couch, pushing him to sit down. She moves to sit down next to him, leaving more space between them than ever had before, just for a moment. Because then she tugging on his bicep to get him to lay down, head resting against the soft fleece of her pajama pants. She doesn’t know the cause of his pain but she will do everything she can to comfort him through it.
“Shhh. You’re okay,” she says quietly, running her fingers through his hair. Brushing it back from his forehead. Lightly scraping her nails against his scalp. Over and over she does this as he cries, her pajamas becoming damp. She holds him with her other hand, and she whispers the words her mom would whisper to her when it was Julie that needed comforting. As his sobs begin to fade and the sniffles increase, he reaches up and grabs her hand and clutches it against his chest. It’s then that Julie determines that the words she put in her dream box earlier were truth. She loves Luke. And while right now is not the time to confess those feelings, nothing is stopping her from showing them by continuing to comfort him.
His breathing slows down and the sniffles stop, and Julie can’t stop herself from leaning down and brushing her lips against his forehead as sleep takes him.

@claire8216 requested 82! This prompt had a small existential crisis from me that really doesn’t matter but you know! What’s life without a little crisis here and there? 😅 Unedited to keep it real (flashes fake gang signs to look cool)
Pick a number between 1-102 (7, 13, 17, 23, 31, 45, 82, 97) I am working on them slowly so please be patient!
---------------
Luke blinks slowly at the page, his grip on the pen loosening. God, what time is it? Maybe they should call it quits for the night. He looks around but they haven't had a chance to get a clock yet. Tapping his phone screen, nothing happens. Dead. Sighing, he recalls he hadn't charged it last night because the charger was at the bottom of one of his moving boxes.  Thankfully he'd spent the afternoon unpacking after he'd gotten off shift at the diner.
He gets up to plug the phone in and Julie only gives a tilt of her chin in acknowledgement that he's moved away, her pen still flying across the page.  Smiling, he leans against the wall to wait for the devise to power back on, taking in this gorgeous scene.
Last night the room had felt weird. The walls laid bare, boxes shoved into a precarious tower in the corner, the mattress directly on the floor. His mom wouldn't let him take the bed frame. Something about it once belonging to his great uncle. It was a lot of change and while he's definitely better about it than Alex, he wouldn't lie and say it was the best sleep of his life, finally out of his stifling childhood home. Even if the room still didn't feel like him yet, having gone through the majority of his boxes helped to at least breathe easier. But now, seeing Julie lying on his bed, lost in the words of a song he's sure will win them awards, he realizes how much she's becoming home to him. No matter where he finds himself, he will always be alright if she is right there with him. His eyes drift closed.
The tinny startup sound alerts him that his phone is turning on, the battery finally charged enough. Dragging his eyes open, he checks the time.
Shit! Fuck!
"Shit, Jules, we have to go!"
All tiredness leaves his body as he searches around for his car keys. He'd put them in his pocket yesterday when he gotten in from the last trip of bring things in. Yesterday's pants. Shit, shit how does he already have so many clothes piled on the floor? He scatters clothing around him in a flurry. Not finding them, he looks around trying to figure out where they might have gone. His eyes cross over Julie who hasn't moved, only paused her pen to look at him.
"Don't just sit there, it's after 3! Your dad is going to kill me!"
Ray is a very lenient man but even he has his limits. Luke is frantic as he starts rummaging through the open boxes.
"Luke."
"Where the fuck are my keys?!"
"Luke!"
Her soft hand slides up his cheek and pulls his face to look over at her. She's no longer on the bed, but she's also not rushing to gather her things so he can take her home. Why isn't she rushing?
Laughter dances in her eyes as she calmly says, "We don't have to leave. Did you forget I moved into the dorms last week?"
He blinks at her, still feeling in crisis mode as his brain slowly supplies him with the memories.
"Also, he would've killed me. I take responsibility for myself, thank you very much."
He snorts at that. She does take responsibility for herself. And Ray is notoriously bad at staying mad at her long enough to enforce a punishment.
His arms wind around her waist and pull her to his chest. She's still looking up at him with a soft smile, and he could drown in her eyes. He rests his forehead on top of hers and takes a deep breath, releasing it with a slow "fuuuuuuuuuuck", trying to slow his heartrate down. Her hands slide up his back before slipping into the ripped armholes of his shirt, pressing cold fingers against the skin of the small of his back.
Suddenly, he's aware of the fact that they are alone at his apartment. A fact that he'd been very aware of when he first opened the door to let her in earlier. He'd stared down at her with a goofy grin that she had reciprocated. No parents, no Aunts, no little brothers to interrupt them. No curfew. That's when Reggie's elbow had dug into his pec as he pushed Luke out of the way (read: into a wall) to hug Julie. There were, after all, still bandmates.
But no bandmates right now. And no place they need to be. His nose drifts down her temple as his hand drifts up to the nape of her neck, pulling her into a kiss.  Warmth spreads throughout his entire body, set aflame everywhere they touch. The kiss intensifies as she presses closer and his hands begin to wander.
She pulls away all too soon, her hand pushing lightly against his chest as he tries to follow. Breathing hard, he looks down into her eyes which are darker than they were before.
"I have class at 9am. We should probably go to sleep."
A groan leaves his body at the idea of stopping, but he knows school is important to Julie and it's her first week of classes.
"Okay, yeah. Let's go to bed."
A different type of thrill thrums through him. For the first time, Julie is going to sleep in his bed. She will be the first thing he sees in the morning when he opens his eyes. That's something he could get used to. He'd take Julie anyway he can. Tangling their fingers together he drags them back over to the bed. He goes to empty his pockets and he pulls out a car key.
"They were in today's pants??"
Julie snorts from where she is putting on a pair of his basketball shorts. "Did you forget you went to work today, too?" She shakes her head in amusement. Apparently he is more tired than he'd thought.
He lets out a small laugh as he shucks his pants and pulls his shirt over his head before climbing into the bed. (climbing down? it's so close to the floor!) She slides in next to him and he can't help but pull her close for another kiss. Now that he's laying down, exhaustion floods him. He pulls back and she's staring at him tenderly.
"Love  you."
"Love you too."
There's a soft smile before she is settling her head against his chest. He relaxes into his own pillow, sleep already trying to pull him under.
"Goodnight, Boss."

1-102 is such a big rangeeeeee 🤔
I’ll take 17 plz ❤️
@thedeathdeelers wanted soft juke in bed scenes, and you chose 17. (this was influenced by your recent addition, and i peppered in some "u"s for you as well. to make it feel like home :P)
Pick a number between 1-102 (97, 45, 17, 13, 23, 82)
------------------------
She's finally asleep. Luke leans heavily against the headboard of their bed with a sigh. His eyes rove across Julie's face, peaceful now but with remaining dregs of discomfort after the last several hours, which is pale. The color only recently started to return to normal. A faint sheen of sweat is just barely visible in the low light of their room.
Reaching over, he gently brushes her hair back from her forehead, pausing when she shifts, hoping he hasn't woken her up. She settles down and he breathes a sigh of relief. Today had been rough. He feels pretty lied to by media and society. They all paint morning sickness as a one and done kinda thing and well.. a morning thing. Not whatever had happened today. Absentmindedly, his thumb begins to trace patterns across her shoulder and down her arm. He pretends it's to help soothe Julie in her sleep, but really the touch helps to ground him, remind him that she's right there and will be okay.
They'd been working in their music room that afternoon when he'd noticed her begin to regulate her breathing with slow exhales. Then the colour had drained from her face and she was making a mad dash to the bathroom. He'd ran after her but retching sounds were already bouncing off the walls out into the hallway before he'd made it to her.
Guilt settles in him as the memories of the afternoon assault him. It's his fault. Julie wouldn't be in pain right now if she hadn't been pregnant. If he'd known how to help her. All he'd managed to do successfully was keep her hair out of her way and given her a cool washcloth to place on the back of her neck as she leaned against the rim of the toilet. Julie had done a better job taking care of him when he'd gotten food poisoning. Everything else he'd tried had backfired, hard. He'd gotten her some water, but she couldn't keep it down. After hours of dry heaving and gagging, he thought it'd be important to get something in her system so he had left her to make some plain toast. The plate had barely made it into the same room as Julie before she was lunging for the toilet again, stomach spasming.
His eyes fall shut, recalling the feeling of inadequacy, trying to remember the breathing exercises he's helped Alex with a thousand times. Is this how it's going until she reaches the second trimester? That's over a month away! He hates this powerless feeling. A tear leaks out, making a slow trail down his face. Movement shifting on the bed causes him to open his eyes just in time to see Julie turning onto her side, snuggling her face into his hip. His hand moves to her back, idly playing with some of the loose locks of hair. She takes a deep breath, a content hum flavouring her exhale. That pulls a small smile onto his face despite everything that's been playing in his mind the last few minutes. How could he not? It's Julie, after all. His brightly burning star. His star that just mumbled something he didn't catch.
Quietly, he asks, "What was that, Jules?"
She repeats herself a little bit louder, eyes staying shut. "Thank you for taking care of me today."
"Of course! I'd do anything for you." The guilt resurges as he grasps for what he could have done better. "Wish I could have been more useful, though."
She shakes her head, nose brushing against him. "You did great. We will get the hang of things. You're going to be an amazing dad."
Love swells within him. She always knows what to say to pull him out of his head. And he can now recognize the fear that was fueling his frustrations. Her body may be doing all the work right now, but they are in this together. It's a fact that they make each other better at whatever they set their sights on. He tucks his legs under the blanket and slowly slides down to lay next to her. He pulls her against his side and presses a kiss to her temple.
"Yeah. We got this."

Guessing Game Juke AU
Try and guess the source i mashed with jatp before I reveal it about 3/4 of the way through this. lololol
enjoy 😊😊😊
-----------------
Rose was a rock goddess that left the world, and her family, too soon. but she had quite the legacy left behind that went solely to her family. Julie wanted to follow in her mom's footsteps but she's trying to figure out what the best route is for her and not just bank on her mom's name to get there.
one of those attempts is to go to a less known club's open mic night, where she meets the lead singer of one of the bands and they get to talking about each other's music/lyrics and just really connect (so much so they forget to introduce themselves)
a seedy talent scout approaches her when she steps away to use the restroom but quickly makes it clear what he expects from her if she wants to move upward in the business. Before anything too terrible happens, the guy steps in "that's enough, you should know that's not how the scouts are expected to conduct themselves at Eats and Beats." or soemthing along those lines and the scout growls back "stop butting your head into my business, Patterson. I will blacklist your little band from ever getting signed"
OR SOMETHING.
but THEN
Julie can't let that stand. She is offended on how she was treated but she couldn't let scum like this man threaten those who try to help like that so she comes clean.
"what label did you say you were from, again? Jasmine Records? Let your boss know that your CEO Sandra will be hearing from the Petal Pushers management about the decorum of their talent scouts and their treatment of musicians including the daughter of Rose Sanchez"
OR SOMETHING
and luke is there like whoa whoa whoa, i just wanted to help the wrecking ball of talent and beauty, this is ROSE SANCHEZ'S daughter?! Holy shit
and then julie has to go home and face her dad
and aunt
(DO WE RECOGNIZE THE SOURCE IP?)
from here, their lives go on separately, but luke can't get her out of his head and he knows the best way to get another chance to even talk to her.  SC needs to get signed so they go looking anywhere, follow any lead (not that they weren't already before) to try and get a record deal and move up into the world of those who've made it
and Julie's dad is well meaning but doesn't understand why she went to such a seedy part of town alone and refuses to use the resources left to her if she wants to follow in her mom's footsteps
and then Caleb enters the story
he's been talking to Ray for awhile, trying to convince him  that  Rose's songs should be managed by a label, his label. Why leave the day to day management to the family when they have other things to worry about?
Ray hasn't known what to do but he realizes that he doesn't know what he's doing and he needs to be there for Julie and mentions what happened to Caleb one day during one of their talks and Caleb offers her a contract right then.
"it's the least i could do for dear Rose and sweet Julie"
Julie is put in a strange position, not wanting to turn down such an opportunity but its also not sitting right with her
meanwhile SC get wind of a real exclusive club and manage to get booked there. It has a strange deal, you impress the owner, you get a contract right then, and it's worth looking into
they show up to the HGC and a man with piercing eyes looks down from a VIP balcony
they do it!
they get the deal
it's like a wish come true
life changes for them overnight
skip a bit forward, they are at the recording studio and while taking a break and wandering the halls, luke walks into Julie again. It's obvious that she doesn't recognize him (but unbeknownst to him, thats more because she is preoccupied by everything going on in her world, her dad had dropped the idea of giving a label management of her mom's songs) but they hit it off again
swirling romance?
THEN WE DISCOVER THAT CALEB IS BOTH JAFAR AND THE GENIE BUT DEFINITELY EVIL
Caleb tricks Ray into signing something that basically is a contract for Julie and all of Rose's solo songs
because she is still barely a minor she's "locked" in
and the guys discover that there is a downside to signing the first contract you get on the whims of a club owner, aka HGC owns all songs produced by SC and there is a fashion clause that they were unaware of
they have to help each other out but to break free of the contracts, they have to be willing to risk their music careers,
ultimately, the guys believe in being true to themselves and helping julie out
so SC and Julie expose caleb's underhandedness
Caleb sues SC for defamation and they get shut up real quick. also, Sunset Curve will never make music again
Caleb tries to do something similar to Julie but it comes out that he actually did some real illegal shit regarding her contract, and since she was a minor, it all got nullified and void and so she gets off fairly unscathed
But it's as all this is coming to a close and being more familiar with legalese, julie notices something interesting about the settlement with SC
they can't do anything about the songs already recorded and released by Caleb's label, but when told they wouldn't make music again, the word choice was something along the lines of "the band known as Sunset Curve will cease all current and future creations" but it never names the guys by name.
SO they make Julie and the Phantoms
and GET BIG

Pick a number between 1-102 (97, 45, 17)
-----------
A chill runs up Julie's spine, bringing her mind to consciousness. Sunlight drifts through the windows of the studio, motes dancing in the morning light. She is confused for a second why she is here on the pullout couch, but it all comes back to her quickly, resulting in a flash of adrenaline coursing through her as she quickly turns her head to check behind her. Yep. Luke is there, lying on his back, arm draped over his eyes. She would think he was asleep if it weren't for the bouncing leg. Julie and the Phantoms was keeping busy this summer and they'd had multiple gigs that week including two the day before. They had all been dragging after packing up their gear so Luke and Julie had let Reggie and Alex go home to crash. It didn't make sense for anyone to make an unnecessary trip. It was Julie's house, and Luke had been staying on the studio's couch after another blowout argument with his mom.
Julie glances back at Luke, anxiety starting a slow simmer in her stomach. She hadn't meant to fall asleep out here. What if she made him uncomfortable! What if she is the cause of his leg bounce! She reaches for her phone and digs it out of her pocket to check the time. It is already mid morning. How?! And she has texts from Carlos of all people. Ugh, what does he want?
Carlos: Julie and Luke
Carlos: Sitting in a a tree
Carlos: K-I-S-S-I-N-G
Carlos: Can you and your boyfriend stop being gross?
Carlos: [image attached]
Julie drops the phone on her face. "Ow!" The dull pain does nothing to stop her heart from beating fast from the picture Carlos sent. Of Luke and her sleeping. Of--
"Oh, you're awake. Morning, Jules."
She turns over to look at him so quick, it'd almost be considered a flail. She watches as he brings his arm down from his face. The very same arm that was, at some point during the night, wrapped around her waist.
"Hey, yoooouuu. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to fall asleep and take up half your bed."
He glances over at Julie, but his eyes slide back up to the ceiling. A tiny smile she's never seen turning up the corners of his mouth. "It's cool."
She grins back. "Learned something about you though."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, I guess Carlos came in at some point." She clicks on the photo so Luke won't see the accompanying messages and turns it towards him. "Turns out you are a bit of a cuddler."
Luke freezes, eyes wide and staring at the picture. Of him being the big spoon, arm draped over her waist and face burrowed under her ponytail and against her neck. She can tell his brain is obviously whirling as he processes. Her stomach drops. She had expected him to bashfully laugh it off. She had wished he'd confidently own it and confess his love for her. Instead, concern fills his expression.
"Julie, I'm-- I-- I know-- I know about your boundaries. Sorry! You--" Julie's grin drops. She's never heard him stutter so badly before. He continues on. "I-I-- I didn't mean to."
His earnestness pierces her heart, cleaving it in two. She can feel the heartbreak on her face, but she tries to replace it quickly with a smile. This is about him right now and how she'd made him uncomfortable, even if it was an accident. She sits up and shoves her phone back in her pocket.
"It's fine, Luke. Really," she reassures him. She can hear the strain in her voice and hopes he attributes it to all the gigs they've been doing this week. "I should probably head inside. Change clothes." Here she turns away from him before he can see the tears building up in her eyes, despite her efforts. She throws her legs over the edge of the bed and finds her shoes discarded on the ground. She begins putting them on.
"Are you okay?"
She tugs the second one onto her foot. "Yeah."
"Julie." He's not buying it.
"I'm sorry if I put you in an--" A tear runs down her cheek and she pulls in a shuddering breath. "An unwanted situation."
She moves to stand up but a strong forearm snakes its way around to her stomach and pulls her back. His warmth against her back is familiar. His voice is right next to her ear when he quietly says, "It wasn't unwanted."
Julie's breath hitches and her hand clutches onto the one holding her. Luke's voice remains quiet as he continues. "I just had the best night's sleep, and then I realized how creepy it would be for you if you woke up, your guy friend with his hands all over you... I didn't want to make you uncomfortable."
"Oh." She doesn't know what she means by that. Is it a relieved 'oh'? Disappointed? Maybe a bit of both.
Luke's other arm comes around her and he hugs her tight. "But in those first moments when I woke up... I was so happy that I was waking up next to you. Nothing has felt more right. So, no. Definitely not unwanted."
Julie's heart is pounding in her chest and tears are still falling down her cheeks, but a small smile begins to light up her face as she says "It wasn't unwanted for me, either."
His arms flex and she feels his face press into her shoulder. Feeling bolder she asks, "What does this mean? For us?"
He slowly drags his face up, his nose grazing the skin of her neck. "Will you go out with me, Jules? So I can stare at you if I wake up before you and it not be creepy?"
She laughs, finally turning her face towards his. "It'd still be creepy."
He scrunches his nose at her, and she reciprocates. From all their performances, she's learned it's impossible not to. "Yes, I will."
His lips press gently against hers before he is pulling her back down to lay in bed a little bit longer.
