About Bill C-18 and the Meta news blackout, I also wanted to share how this affects not only bigger news outlets like the CBC, CTV, etc., but also hits local journalism, and far beyond just news. All campus and community radio stations are now blocked on Facebook and Instagram. For the campus station I volunteer at, that's 99% of their online presence (save for whatever is left of Twitter/X...). Unlike the CBC, which has spent the last few weeks on social media telling people to instead get their news on the CBC website and apps, no one really goes to campus radio stations' websites, except when sent there once a year during funding drives and donation campaigns. Even if they did, especially for smaller entities like community radio, we just don't have the staff nor budget to maintain a constantly updated website with full, new articles published throughout the day. The best we could do was post updates on social media and link to radio programmes.

It's especially a kick in the teeth considering the NCRA recently carved out grants to support local and community-level independent journalism on radio, and now no one can see us. Of course it's not just about music programming. The news journalists at our station (and others too, I'm sure) conduct interviews with local representatives and candidates, cover local news, updates and elections. Many leading journalists in the country got their start on campus radio at university, too.

Campus and community stations get their licences from the CRTC because their purpose is "to serve the community". Now information about community events, radio programmes, local news, promoting local talent, etc., which used to largely happen through publicising radio programmes and features on social media, is blocked. What will community radio do if it can't be where the community is?

Also, our funding drives are in jeopardy. In Ontario, Ford made all the fees that were included in university tuition optional, and so for the last few years we've been relying exclusively on money coming in from funding drives, and most of that would happen on social media: reaching out to the local community, to alumni, past volunteers, and all of their networks. If our social media presence is blacked out, I don't think our station and many others will even survive this academic year, and we're one of the longest-running radio stations in the world.

All this is to say, write to your MPs, please! Urge them to do something about it! Facebook and Instagram have embedded themselves so far into local community work, that to have local broadcasters locked out of the community would disrupt everything and spell the end for all of us. Find your local MP (https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en) and send them a letter urging them to reach a negotiation and end the blackout on Canadian broadcasters!

it was good! jack and mom dated for like 2 years? maybe idk if we decided on a timeframe .. before they broke up.

jacks parents really liked her and she got along great with the family! she was also pretty good friends with luke and so when mom removed everyone from her instagram after viviennes messages they were pretty hurt.

but now everythings good! she's constantly sending ellen pictures and videos of leighton! and luke texts her for advice, etc. its still a little awkward because mom hasn't really gotten to spend a lot of time with everyone aside from the holidays, but by the time summer comes around and mom goes to the lake house everything is talked through!

A Gaza photojournalist working for international media called on residents of the coastal enclave to cross the border into Israel on October 7, after Hamas terrorists had breached it, an HonestReporting investigation has found.

Mohammed Fayq Abu Mostafa, a freelancer who has been working for Reuters, made the comments while excitedly displaying footage of Hamas atrocities on an Instagram Live hosted in Gaza by another photojournalist, Ashraf Amra.

Amra has been working for AP, Reuters and APA Images, as well as for Turkish agency Anadolu. The investigation also found Amra had been honored with kisses by Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on two previous occasions.

The revelation casts doubt on the journalistic impartiality of the two freelance photojournalists and the vetting procedures of media outlets that have relied on their work.

The following information was compiled based on a probe of Amra’s and Abu Mostafa’s social media accounts. We also looked at articles and visuals published online and checked image databases of relevant media outlets.

“Whoever Can Go – Go”

On October 7, Amra hosted an Instagram Live from Khan Younis to provide updates following Hamas’ deadly cross-border assault on Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and some 240 taken hostage.

During the broadcast, Amra willingly let a thrilled Abu Mostafa, who had just returned from Israeli territory, display the brutal acts that he had captured on his phone at the breached border area.

Amra can be seen laughing and smiling while Abu Mostafa presented footage of the lynching of an Israeli soldier:

Abu Mostafa went on to say: “We were there two hours ago, since the beginning.”

He detailed what he saw at the border and deep inside Israel, in Sderot. He described breaking into a room where Israelis were hiding before being taken by Hamas terrorists.

He then called on people to cross into the sovereign Jewish state: “Advice, whoever can go – go. It is a one-time event that will not happen again.”

And Amra replies: “Really, it will not repeat itself.”

Abu Mostafa’s border photos, one of which seems to show the lynching he had shared on Amra’s Live, were recently selected by Reuters and The New York Times to be included in their 2023 “Images of the Year.”

Amra was also at the border earlier in the day. In the Instagram Live he said:

I just returned from the Khuza’a area, near the Khuza’a area on the eastern border of the Gaza Strip. Tens of armed Palestinian men are constantly storming the border toward the settlements around Gaza.

Some media outlets published a photo credited to “Ashraf Amra/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images,” showing a digger breaching the border fence. Reuters selected another photo by Amra, taken on October 7 inside Gaza, as one of its “Pictures of the Month” for October 2023.

Can I talk about israeli anti zionists. I promise that I am not just being resentful or shouting at a wall.

I used to follow one prior to 2021 and when the sheikh jarrah protests happened they had alot of anons call them a colonizer blah blah and complicit and it's like funny bc if u r that confident then get off anon. But very much after they were making posts that, paraphrasing, were like "oh you guys are so stupid for thinking that posting is activism" and "I need to step away from social media" and "I don't feel safe" and... I unfollowed. I just felt like these were not the posts I wanted on my dash it left a bad taste in my mouth

And today I was curious and I already had a feeling that considering *waves hands around* all of this that they'd be making the same posts and..they are. And idk if I would call it victimization but it is amusing to me but what is not amusing to me is that they made a post that said this

Granted, tumblr is not the place where youre gonna get much interaction with posts like Twitter and Instagram but I really hate this condescending and demoralizing rhetoric so much sooo much. Reminder donating is practically useless. Rn there is no aid going through theres some ways to get money on the ground I am honestly not entirely sure which ones are more legit. But the way social media has been used to fight against the censorship means the world to palestinians. Instagram and Twitter delete videos and you guys re upload them. A gazan journalist took a picture of a piece of a bomb that showed it was manufactured by Woodward, a US company and thousands of people reposted it and exposed the locations of this company. There is sharing of gazan journalists social media pages so their videos make it to people

Like Muna el Kurd said "your posts are treasures to us" the last few years have shown that social media has become a way for people to mobilize.

And even if tumblr is not a place for it, it means the world that blogs are constantly spamming updates. That you guys didn't stop posting what's happening like israelis hope u do when they cut off most internet access to gazans to hide their atrocities. It means so much that you are sharing sources to combat the misinformation and propaganda and palestinian history.

PARK SEO JOON BREAKS THE INTERNET - AGAIN.

Actor commented on Y/N Y/L/N’s photo and made everyone go crazy for a couple of hours

That Park Seo Joon is up and about giving us all a heart attack with his beautiful smile and amazing soul is the understatement of the year. The 30-year-old handsome actor is known to take everyone’s breath away with his wholehearted performances. In any drama or movie, you can bet. I mean, who hasn’t thought about him ever since She was Pretty? He made sure to stay constantly in our minds - and hearts.

Park Seo Joon is known for being openly active on social media, with his fun posts and stories on Instagram. However, fans had something to freak out about last weekend, as Sunday the actor liked and commented on a recent photo of model Y/N Y/L/N, to the despair of the fangirls.

Hundred of thousands of replies have been recorded and when asked about it, Park laughed it off. “She really is gorgeous. I’m not going to deny that.” (See video below)

Of course, there was nothing from the 26-year-old model, but there are theories going on about it on the internet, theories that have left this journalist open-mouthed. But would Y/N be having anything with the actor or is it just a long shot in the dark?

There hasn’t been anything about the two of them meeting in real life and while Park Seo Joon is always out and about, the same can’t be said about the model, who likes to keep her privacy and is often seen with another hot-shot, the singer Jeong Jaehyun, although neither of them has confirmed any kind of relationship between them and both say they’re only friends.

Whether or not this was just Park being a normal guy and complimenting a girl, we can’t stop thinking about how cute of a couple those two would make! We even managed to manip our new favorite ship! (See below)

Y/N stared at the screen of her phone for a few more moments before cracking up. She couldn’t believe her life had led her to this moment, one she would be featured in teenager magazines and shipped with an actor she had never met. Of course, she knew who he was, she had watched his movies and dramas and she had to admit that he was all that everyone was saying. But had she met him? No, of course not.

Her notifications on Instagram had been blowing up for the past 48 hours, making the girl mute the app and ignore all kinds of messages she had been receiving. It was a good idea, no drama, no fans throwing insults at her (something that would happen, she was sure of it), no fans asking things she couldn’t answer, no gossip magazines mentioning her on Twitter… Nothing. It was just Y/N, the bed she had been on, Netflix, and some good company. That is until she got a call from her best friend begging her to read that article.

Hana had been in her life for as long as she could remember, her best friend ever since they were little girls playing in the sandbox. They might have taken completely different paths in life, but they were always by each other’s side whenever it was needed.

Y/N was willing to read the article because it was Hana who wrote it. She would trust her best friend with everything in her life, even gossips the media wanted to spread.

The fact that Hana had been chosen to write something about her life was completely amusing. Sometimes, Y/N wondered if her best friend had told her boss they were best friends and that was why, but the truth is that Y/N knew, for a fact, that Hana had kept her mouth closed when it came to being friends with someone as famous as Y/N and it could only be the most ridiculous coincidence in the world. No one had ever suspected anything.

With a small smile, Y/N closed the e-mail her friend had sent her and shook her head. As always, Hana had written something so close to the truth without saying anything that she couldn’t believe the way her friend had with words. She had no other way than to say it was perfect and she wouldn’t change a thing.

Y/N couldn’t believe what she was reading. There were times she worried about Hana living for far too long in her teenage years with all the young celebrities she had to be in touch with for her job - and for her own pleasure too. Of course, you never know what the future holds, but there was no way Y/N would ever be with Park Seo Joon. She was perfectly fine the way she was, with who she was. Even if she didn’t have anyone, exactly, at the time.

Her life was great the way it was and adding drama to it, as the comments had made sure to confirm her worries, was nothing but a waste of time.

Hana sent her just a thumb up as a reply, something Y/N knew that meant she had posted the article and Y/N couldn’t wait to see what else would be said about her after that.

With a devious smile on her face, the girl opened her Instagram for the first time that week and clicked on her most recent photo, the comment Seo Joon had left being the first one. And then she clicked on the heart next to it without a second thought.

Instantly, her phone blew up with at least five messages from her best friend.

The laugh that erupted from Y/N was loud and genuine. She loved messing with her best friend to the point of making her professional life a living hell sometimes.

“What’s so funny?” a raspy voice called her out, her laughter slowly dying out as she stared ahead, the once empty room now giving sight to something she quite enjoyed.

There was a reason Y/N liked to keep her life private; There was a reason she found no trouble at all in setting all her apps on mute and that reason was standing right in front of her. His wet jet-black hair dripping into the floor and slowly tracing down his handsome face, leading down past his shoulders, glistening in the fluorescent light against his chest, one she had so many times run her hands over. The marks of her nails still painting in a soft red on the pale skin, dying down on the white towel poorly secured around his waist.

Y/N followed all of it in complete silence, her eyes never daring to move from the man standing in the doorway of the bathroom, his dark brown eyes focused on her shallow breaths, the way her chest seemed to rise and fall in the bra she was wearing, the only piece of clothing her upper body was sporting.

Her eyes had turned into a darker shade, something he could see from where he was, something he enjoyed a little too much. Her long legs, hidden under the white thick duvet, squirmed under his intense stare, her insides churning in excitement as she watched his hungry eyes roam all over her.

Jaehyun had known Y/N for a good three years. They had been introduced in a party Johnny had thrown and hit it off immediately. At the time, both of them had completely different lives, both of them dated and there was nothing more than genuine friendship. They were both easy people to talk to, had pretty much the same interests. And even though they had super busy schedules, it was always easy to talk through messages and phone calls.

It all started to change, though, when both of their relationships went down the drain and what once was an innocent friendship saw there the chance to change into something else.

There was no name to what they had, they hadn’t talked about it. A whole year had gone without it being fully addressed, but it wasn’t just a friends with benefits thing and they both knew it.

It was something else, something, as much as they liked to deny, with deeper feelings involved. It wasn’t easy to simply hide it from everyone. They had to be cautious, they couldn’t let people out of their friends' circle get suspicious, they couldn’t let anyone notice how much they meant to each other.

It was easier that way, less dramatic, and more personal. Something they would only share with people they were comfortable with. And yet they weren’t anything official.

There was something dreadful in being in a committed relationship when they had started whatever they had. The ghosts of their pasts still lingering over them, so it was only natural to take things as they came, to move around it and see where it was going to lead them. But maybe neither of them had thought it would last this long without coming to a real thing.

They had grown used to how they worked and thought that there was nothing to be talked about.

“It’s just Hana,” she shrugged it off, her brain finally snapping out of her thoughts.

There was something she would never be able to do when standing anywhere near that man, and it was stop fantasizing about him. He was like her own kind of Greek god, the personification of a sacred deity thrown into this Earth to be of her delight. There could be a thousand lifetimes and there weren’t going to be one of them that she didn’t find him handsome, no matter what. He just caused that kind of feelings in her.

“Oh,” he muttered, his body leaning off the wood, his soft steps echoing through the floor as he made his way to the girl. “I thought we were supposed to pretend we were stranded in a deserted island,” he smirked, his eyes ravishing over her exposed chest, taking every inch of her skin in, his tongue darting out of his mouth to run over his smooth lips.

“You were taking a little too long on that shower,” Y/N murmured, her eyes wide open as she watched the man walking up to her, her hands twitching in excitement to run over his torso and add a few more scratch marks to it.

The hunger in his eyes was like fuel to her, burning too bright and hot that she felt it in her core, his breath fanning over her face, now too close to her and yet too far. He was towering over the girl, his body hovering hers, not touching an inch of it, much to her dismay.

“I had to keep myself entertained,” she breathed out, her lips brushing against his in a feeble attempt of toying with him, baiting him in her mercy; he didn’t buy it. Jaehyun knew her way too well.

“I’m sure you could have thought of better ways to do it,” he mumbled, his hand slowly tracing the curve of her neck, intertwining in her hair softly, caressing her while still running his tongue over his lips, watching as she tried to keep her eyes on his, but failing to unfocus from his mouth. “I’m sure you could’ve just…” he started once again, his hand now retreating from the hair and sliding down her arms, softly and slowly, the touch leaving goosebumps in its wake as his breath fanned down on her, her eyes now shut in anticipation. “You could’ve just joined me.”

Jaehyun left no time for a reply, it was never his intention.

Without a single second to spare, his lips crashed down on hers, roughly and hungry, their breaths mingling and panting, the only sound in the bedroom aside from the occasional smacks of their lips.

Jaehyun’s hands couldn’t find a home, traveling from her arms to her waist, pulling her closer to him, feeling her chest flush against his, her warmth spreading through him as a safety blanket, her legs freeing from the confines of the duvet before closing around him at the same time his hands reached her back, his fingers carefully running down her spine. The touch was so gentle she couldn’t help but moan at the feeling it caused, her back arching off the bed and into him, her mouth opening in the shape of an O.

Jaehyun took it as his advantage, sliding his tongue into her mouth in a wet kiss, exploring every corner of her mouth, massaging her own tongue before fighting for dominance over the kiss, which she surrendered to him.

Y/N kissed him in abandonment as if leaving her whole life to him, giving him everything she had, everything she would ever have.

She clutched to his neck fiercer, fingers slipping into his hair and pulling at the roots with wanton, desperately trying to draw a moan out of him, with success.

He could never get enough of that woman and she knew exactly what to do to get him going, but if he was to ever make it to their appointment, he would have to put an end to it and soon. Jaehyun could feel himself coming up with excuses to his friends as to why he didn’t show up to their party already.

Gasping out for air, Jaehyun broke their connection, his nose running along her cheeks to her shoulders, leaving open-mouthed kisses on her collarbone, his mind reminding him of not leaving any visible mark on her skin before, finally, sucking in the skin on her chest, right above her breast, a small gasp coming out of her throat, her eyes still closed as she bit her lips together in pleasure.

“You should get ready,” Jaehyun murmured against her skin, his lips still taunting her endlessly.

“Can’t we just… Skip it?” Her voice sounded so broken for having to leave at that exact moment. She just wanted to spend the rest of the evening lying on that bed at his mercy. The real world could suck sometimes.

“Again?” Jaehyun chuckled, his face now in front of hers. “Didn’t we just skip your friend’s party yesterday?”

“And look at how much more fun we had,” she bargained, her brown eyes dark in want as she stared at him.

Jeong Jaehyun had the power of making her turn into putty by only being in the room and he knew it.

The singer smiled down at the girl, pressed a lingering kiss to her lips and pulled away before she could get too carried away.

“Go get ready, beautiful,” he laughed walking away.

Contrary to his belief, they actually left home and just in time to miss the rush hour, something both of them were glad. Although it was a fairly quick ride from Seocho-gu to Itaewon, you never know how much time you would lose stuck in trafic.

It was one thing when you didn’t have much to do, but when you had a party, even if a small gathering, the anxiety of being in the same place for too long would be too much.

Y/N sat in the passenger seat, enjoying the view of the city flashing past them as the car headed towards the center of the city, a low song playing on the radio, keeping the atmosphere in the vehicle serene and light. Golden specks of light entered through the windshield, the last rays of sunshine of the day illuminating their skin in a golden tone, Jaehyun’s eyes hidden by his black ray-ban focusing on the road ahead.

She took the time to admire it all, the way his hands held the steering-wheel expertly, sliding across it every now and then, the same hands she loved running around her body, the same hands she loved to just hold and have it clasped around hers.

The sunlight kissed his skin almost adoringly, highlighting his cheekbones and adding a new color to the speck of tones she had seen his face turn into. Y/N knew that if Jaehyun were to take off his glasses at that moment, his eyes wouldn’t be the same dark brown color they always were; they would have turned into a melted chocolate-color, like someone had melted the delicacy and poured into his irises. It was mesmerizing and breathtaking, worth of losing herself into them. And she had, so many times it was beyond her comprehension, but she didn’t mind one bit.

Y/N reached her hands over the handbrake, her palm turned up in an obvious sign of telling Jaehyun something. His right hand let go of the steering-wheel, intertwining on hers without a second thought, his face turning to her side with a smile plastered on his lips, the devotion his eyes held hidden by the dark shades he had on.

It was at times like these that the singer felt like he had everything he could have asked for. Everything felt right, even if it didn’t seem like it.

There was something about the way their hands seemed to fit effortlessly, how they always had been thinking the same thing before speaking it, how they seemed to be in the exact same place when it came to their lives.

It was uncanny that they should be together. Everyone had said so, from his friends to his family, always bugging him about it, saying that he had to properly ask her to be his girlfriend. A girl like that wasn’t easy to find, that’s what his dad said whenever they visited.

But it wasn’t so simple. They had been ‘together’ for so long that he just couldn’t see the right way or the right time to do it. They had fallen into a pattern that their relationship was real and official, even if unspoken, even if hidden from the world. Saying something just felt like doubting everything they had ever had.

“Have I ever told you how much I like it when you bring me to meet your friends?” Her voice disrupted his track of thought, bringing him back into reality and to the car.

His hand was still wrapped around hers as he drove down the road, the sun barely visible in the horizon. She had perked up in her seat, something Y/N always seemed to do when she wanted to share some kind of secret. It was endearing watching her whole self light up at the idea of telling someone something she deemed intimate.

“You do?” His eyes went back to hers, watching the excitement take over her features, her eyes brightening as she looked back at him in innocence, her head tilted to the side as if she couldn’t believe he was asking her that.

“Of course I do!” She hooted. “What’s not to like? They are all always so welcoming and fun to be around. They bring some other side of you too, I guess. You seem more relaxed, more natural and... More you. Something I only get to see when you’re not on the spotlight.” Y/N proposed, her fingers snapping up as she listed everything she had said. “Not to mention the fact that they’re super funny and make everything feel safe. It makes me feel like everything is so normal.”

Jaehyun smiled. He understood everything she was saying and couldn’t help but agree. It seemed like they were in a safe environment every time they were with them, the world could fall apart and yet they would remain one.

It seemed strange that a group of people could hold such importance to them, but it made sense to him. With his friends, it was a few of the moments that he could be himself, without any pressure. It was like going home every time he needed to go back.

The fact that Y/N felt the same way meant something to him. He didn’t know what yet, but it had something to do with the fact that his chest would feel warm sharing with her all the memories he had made and were to make with them.

It didn’t mind what it was or how silly it seemed to anyone else. She would listen to him intently and appreciate the fact that he felt like he could share it with her, could trust on her with bits of him that weren’t on full display. And she loved it. She loved listening to him talking, she loved picturing his younger version doing all the things coming out of his mouth. Maybe that was why she loved those counted getaways with him and his group of friends.

From Paper to the Click of a Button

Print media has been around since the 1400s and is still used to this day. With the advancement of technology Print media, specifically Newsprint, the future of print news is uncertain. This has caused print media to go through some major changes from Shortening news articles into a 140 word tweet to being able to get news anywhere at the tip of your fingers. We will be exploring how social media and the internet has changed the print industry for the better or for worse.

News articles have been cut significantly shorter so as to capture the attention of the current generation which heavily relies on social media. According to Liao J (2016) the attention span of humans has significantly decreased from 12-8 seconds from year 2000 to current day due to the information flood caused by social media multitasking and reading quick news title that captures our attention. How is this a challenge for the Print industry? As humans adapted this behavior we also adapted into making news shorter. As smart phones have gotten smaller, so have the words In articles to cater to web traffic Like how the associated press (2014) “world’s largest independent news organization, called for its journalists to keep articles in the 300–500 words range. Email, a seemingly antiquated and unsexy concept, is now the vehicle for newsletters, a short, summary-based format with which several major news companies are experimenting”.

Print Media has also started to widely use social media to put out news, The Straits Times a Singaporean broadsheet newspaper company has turned to using Instagram to put out news. Having a social media account makes it easier to put out news live as it is being updated. However having a social media account to post on and constantly fact check whilst keeping headlines short challenges the company and though it keeps content free, this causes the company to lose money. Which brings me to my next point.

According to C Taylor (2016) 80% of Newspaper revenue come from advertisements and as digital media continues to lead in marketing profit from daily newspaper has 44 percent from 2005 to 2009 and with the drop in profit comes the cut in human resources. Between 2001 and 2009, daily newspapers reduced overall newsroom staff by 25 percent.

As a fellow writer I personally think that print media has not adapted well. As the revenue for print companies continue to drop, the lesser writer/journalist/reporters there will be. Thus lesser job opportunities. Professional print companies like New York Times or Forbes play an important role in giving out news as it is a reliable source of news. With the rise of social media and digital media many fake websites are popping up as news websites and are spreading false information. This applies to bloggers too as blogging is more based on opinions than neutral facts. Many journalists will end up becoming bloggers as jobs in the Newspaper writing field become more exclusive.

What’s happening in Palestine?

Seeing what's happening in Palestine right now is absolutely devastating. If you're not familiar with the situation, this post is meant to be a quick run down of information and a compilation of further resources to get you started.

To start, take a look at a couple of quick illustrations. This post is a brief summary of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine. This post is a concise little run down on how you can be an ally to Palestinians and actions you can take right now to help.

For a brief summary on the situation in Sheikh Jarrah:

-You may be seeing posts saying "Save Sheikh Jarrah" - Sheikh Jarrah is a neighbourhood in Occupied East Jerusalem

-We call it Occupied East Jerusalem because by international law, East Jerusalem belongs to the Palestinian Territories. But of course Israel does not care about that, and have been illegally occupying it for decades

-To put it briefly, Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah are being forcefully expelled from and dispossessed of their homes that they have lived in for decades by Israeli settlers, backed by the Israeli government, courts and military

-The settler organizations behind these expulsions (some of which are based in the USA) are intent on erasing all Palestinian presence from Sheikh Jarrah, and this is not the first time Palestinians are being forcefully expelled (read: ethnically cleansed) from this neighbourhood and their homes despite their historical ties to and presence in Sheikh Jarrah

-The Palestinian families are trying to appeal the "evictions" through the Israeli supreme court but the Israeli courts always immediately support Israeli settlers, Palestinians have no rights or humanity in their eyes

-Six Sheikh Jarrah families are being expelled this month. Because of this, Palestinians had been (peacefully!!) protesting. And as we know, under the Israeli occupation, Palestinians have no rights. So in response to their protests, settlers have been violent towards them.... which of course lead to further violence from Israeli police towards the Palestinians. Israeli police will always protect violent Israeli settlers over peaceful Palestinians defending themselves

-Historically, every time Palestinians protest Israel's gross violations of their human rights (and international law), Israel attempts to suppress them with violence. That's what's happening now.

-In response to the Sheikh Jarrah protests, Israeli forces have attacked Palestinian protestors and attacked Al-Aqsa Mosque. Most recently the violence has escalated even further as Israel launched air strikes in Gaza. Again.

-Israeli forces have been using skunk spray, stun grenades, rubber coated steel bullets and tear gas on Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque. Let this sink in. It's abhorrent to attack worshippers in a place of worship in any circumstance, but this is Al-Aqsa Mosque - Islam's 3rd holiest site. It's extremely sacred to Muslims. And in the last 10 nights of Ramadan, the most important 10 nights of the year for Muslims.

-In response to Palestinians protesting this violence (Israel’s war crimes!) Israel hiked up the violence - AGAIN. With air strikes in Gaza on civilian populations.

-Hundreds of Palestinians have been injured, hundreds have been hospitalized, and dozens more have been killed in the air strikes - including 9 children. The number is likely higher. You’ll start seeing articles saying “hundreds injured in Palestine - Israel clash” in an attempt to paint this as a two sided conflict - it’s not. Do not be manipulated into thinking it is. The facts are clear. Israeli violence has injured hundreds of Palestinians and killed dozens more.

-During the violence at Al-Aqsa and East Jerusalem, Israeli forces not only attacked Palestinians in the market place and while they were breaking their fasts (including women and children), they not only attacked worshippers in a sacred place of worship in Ramadan, they not only desecrated a holy site with enormous religious and historical significance... they also targeted journalists and paramedics, attacked clinics treating the wounded, and refused to allow ambulances through. Worshippers had to carry the injured on their prayer mats. Reprehensible war crimes against Palestinians is just routine for Israel.

-Al-Aqsa is a soft spot for Muslim Palestinians (and Muslims around the world) because as I said, it's one of Islam's holiest and most sacred sites. In fact, before it changed to Mecca, the qiblah (the directions Muslims pray in) was Al-Aqsa. Because of this, Israel uses it to control Palestinians.

-Historically, every time Palestinians protest Israel’s violence and opression, Israel threatens them with Al-Aqsa. Threatening it with violence, threatening to refuse them access. Keep in mind again that Al-Aqsa is located in the Muslim quarter of East Jerusalem, which by international law belongs to Palestine - but Israel is illegally occupying Palestine and has control.

-Palestinians are a people with strong spirit - they continue to protest for their rights in the face of this despicable violence. But they need help.

-This is not new. This has been the reality for Palestinians since 1948 when the settler colonial state of Israel was established and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from THEIR OWN LAND. Israel’s goal is not a two state solution - clearly, since they continue to expand their annexation of Palestinian land beyond what they have already stolen and in violation of international law. The are intent on ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in their own home, their own land.

-The US government is funding all this - $3.8 BILLION in aid goes to the Israeli occupation every year. (Americans - fight your leaders on this)

-Now knowing all this, STOP calling this situation the Israel-Palestine Conflict. This is NOT a “conflict”, because both sides do not have power in this situation. And this is not a religious issue, so stop using that as a cop out to not care. There are Christian Palestinians that are also opressed by Israel. It’s not about religion, that is part of the propaganda that gets pushed on you so you don’t see what’s actually going on.

-This is the illegal occupation of Palestine by the settler colonial state Israel

-This is apartheid, ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, systemic racism. This is routine war crimes by Israel against Palestine, without consequences. This is repeated violations of international law and human rights - Human Rights Watch has concluded that Israel is guilty of apartheid and human rights abuses. But of course international leaders (who otherwise cite HRW to condemn other countries) are silent.

-So what can we do? First and foremost, get educated. Stay informed and stay aware. Spread the news Palestinians are sharing. Because the mainstream media will not, they are a propaganda machine for Israel.

-It's routine for Israel to 1. abuse Palestinian human rights, then 2. respond to their protests with extreme violence, and then 3. attempt to paint it as a two sided conflict in which Israelis are in equal danger when there is the slightest response from Palestine. They and the media continuously try to paint Palestinians as terrorists. At this point, you should understand that is not the case. (Keep in mind that Palestine is an occupied territory that does not have an army. Israel is a nuclear power with one of the largest, most heavily funded, and technologically advanced armies in the world, backed by every major western nation, and receives billions of dollars in aid from America)

-You'll notice that mainstream media only starts reporting on these incidents when they can call it a "clash" or a "conflict". They constantly try to paint Palestinians as the terrorists in a situation where they are clearly the opressed. STOP letting them manipulate you into thinking this is two sided or about religion. This is an illegal occupation, this is apartheid, this is ethnic cleansing perpetrated by Israel. Israel is terrorizing Palestinians with the (clearly stated! they’re not trying to keep it a secret! Israeli politicians are very open about it!) intention to wipe out Palestine entirely. The first thing you can do is stop letting western media blind you and see this for what it is.

-BOYCOTT. DIVEST. SANCTION. Please learn about the BDS movement. Targeted boycotts are effective. The larger this gets, the more effective it will be. Again, this post is a good intro summary on how to help. Below, I’ll link another resource with more information.

Follow @/mohammedelkurd (he’s on twitter too) and @/muna.kurd15 on instagram. They are Palestinian journalists in Sheikh Jurrah and theirs is one of the 6 families being evicted from their homes this month. They are posting live updates from the ground and are the most reliable source for what is going on, and what is or isn't actually helpful right now. Their highlights and profiles are a wealth of information. Here’s a linktree of important links from Mohammed’s profile.

There are places you can donate to if you would like, it’s always needed. This twitter thread has a brief list. But I urge you to do your research to ensure your money is actually going to Palestinians. Listen to actual Palestinians on what they need right now and donate to places they ask you to - Muna and Mohammed (linked above) are a good starting point.

Right now this is first and foremost a political movement, so your voice is most important. Educate yourself and others, share information. Palestinians have said that the international outcry and spreading what is happening to them is helpful. Please listen to them.

Lastly, wherever you are, I urge you to make noise about this. See if there are local organizations organizing protests and go. Get involved in the BDS movement. Write/email/call your MPs or whatever government representative you have in your country as well as your country's leader and let them know this matters to you, demand that they unequivocally condemn Israel's violence against Palestinians and Israel's violations of Palestinian human rights and international law. Templates for emails can be found here if you are in the UK, and Canada. It only takes a second, so please do it. Please email your politicians wherever you are in the world, their contact information is public. This linktree has a collection of templates and petitions if you’re in the US, UK and Canada. It also has templates and information for you regardless of where in the world you are.

This is not comprehensive. This is just a starting point, a little compilation of information and resources to guide you if you would like to learn about what’s going on and are overwhelmed with the scattered posts everywhere. But it’s a starting point. You cannot learn about a crisis that has spanned decades from one tumblr post. Please click the links I’ve included, look at the graphics, watch the videos, read the posts, sign the petitions, email your politicians. And use all of it as a starting point from which you can then access further resources to educate yourself and others, and help Palestine. They need us.

Edit: I urge you to follow all of the accounts I linked above and stay updated, the situation is constantly evolving. Already the airstrikes in Gaza have been increased to devastating levels, possibly the worst its ever been (there have been many wars in Gaza). The death toll keeps rising. Israel is targeting densely populated civilian areas and using phosphorus bombs (which are illegal). Israel is looking to squash any resistance, it's genocidal at this point and it will only get worse. They also want the world to move on and stop watching, so don't. Do not look away. Keep the pressure on your politicians, stay plugged in, keep talking and spreading awareness. Stay vigilant of the language media uses to try to manipulate you. Colonizers and oppressors and their supporters have never been honest about themselves, so go to Palestinians for news. If you're getting tired, imagine how the Palestinians living this reality feel.

In case you’re wondering why I haven’t posted much about the Super League, it’s because there’s too much going on.

New articles about the league keep being posted on a frequent basis and if I were to post all of them, then I’d be updating this blog like, every twelve seconds.

And I don’t want to do that because I don’t want to end up spamming people on this blog.

Instead, I’ll just post a few links that with articles that are constantly updated, or summarize what’s going on.

The Internet as a stepping stone to revolution (Week 9)

Many believe that as of recent, the world has entered a mentality of ‘sousveillance’. Coined by Steve Mann, the term ‘sousveillance’ reflects the opposite of surveillance. This means that although we are constantly being watched over by the Government and large corporations, these groups and the officials within them are being monitored just as closely by us (Light 2020). With the rise of the Internet and social media platforms, users are able to both post and view regular updates from another city, state or country around the world. Anyone has the ability to be a journalist of their own accord, meaning that the resources are limitless. This gives the population the ability to be highly critical. Any misstep of a politician or a billionaire is relentlessly published over thousands of news sources.

This rapid dissemination of information leads to a build up of knowledge and therefore opinions. People are distraught as they read anecdotes of the struggles of others, and as the secrets of the powerful are exposed. As a result, there has been a wave of what is often referred to as ‘clicktivism’, defined by The Oxford English Dictionary as “the use of social media and other online methods to promote a cause” (Clicktivism 2020). The online sphere has been a location for many waves of activism, and this can be attributed to the simplicity of it. To participate in an online campaign, it is as straightforward as tweeting a hashtag, signing a petition, transferring money or producing something creative (Clicktivism 2020). The power of these seemingly small actions can be derived from the masses. If thousands or even millions of individuals participate, declare their opinion through a tweet or two, the impact of these minor contributions can become major.

This can be seen in the UK’s #StopFundingHate campaign. Discussed through an ‘Impakter’ article in 2018, co-founder Richard Wilson explains that the campaign was launched in 2016 in response to anti-migrant rhetoric stemming from news outlets including the Daily Mail, Sun and Daily Express over the previous year (Wilson 2018). The video published to initially explain the campaign was immediately shared thousands of times on Facebook, accumulating over 3 million views in a matter of days. Their Facebook page and Twitter hashtag immediately became an outlet for conversation and expressions of concern that had existed well before the campaign began. He highlights how this build up of anger pushed supporters to send messages to companies themselves who were supporting these corporations. The first major success was initiated when supporter Bob Jones made a heartfelt post on Lego’s Facebook page, which was shared by thousands of followers. This one message led to Lego concluding their agreement with Daily Mail and ceasing any future promotional activity with them. Following this event, the hashtag #StopFundingHate began to trend globally, beyond the UK. Today, the campaign has influenced thousands of companies and online advertisers to draw their support from hateful sources, with The Sun publicly apologising and Daily Mail changing their editor of 26 years. In May 2017, Stop Funding Hate was invited to address a meeting of UN member states developing a new Global Compact for Migration. This is now formally adopted by UN member states, endorsing“stopping allocation of public funding… to media outlets that systematically promote intolerance, xenophobia, racism and other forms of discrimination towards migrants”.

Despite the success of this campaign, it is also argued that clicktivism is not always enough. Mahatma Gandhi believed that we must be the change we want to see in the world (Ahern 2013). Tweeting #BlackLivesMatter or #StopFundingHate does not combat racism. Racism begins to be combatted when caucasian individuals acknowledge their privilege, recognise that this does not make them superior, and reach out to those who may be struggling to learn more and ask what it is that they need. It is important to take responsibility not over just large corporations, but to call out racism in ourselves and others. Clicktivism is a great beginning, however revolution is only possible with intentional internal change.
