You've heard what was happening in the Kakin Empire.

Just rumors. Murmurs whispered here and there. People were disappearing in droves, but no one knew what was really happening. Some people speculated of aliens finally touching the Earth, taking humanity into the stars. Others thought it was a government failure, a leaked chemical plant that was causing people to die and the Empire was just covering it up.

It was a tragedy, but you lived two countries away from the Kakin Empire. It wasn't supposed to effect you.

This was supposed to be the happiest day of your life. You were supposed to marry the man of your dreams. Live the rest of your life in marital bliss.

Now, the man you were about to swear your life to was dead, and someone else sat at your side.

You've never seen anyone like him. He was peculiar looking. Handsome, but his skin was an inhuman green color. You've never seen someone with a tail before. He was oddly beautiful, in a tragic sort of way.

But you could barely care about appearances, not with how effortlessly he started to massacre.

He called himself the King when he entered the venue. You thought him rude, at first, when he interrupted the ritual with his sudden presence. Your fiance looked annoyed at the appearance. You could see him turn, about to curse out the stranger.

In retrospect, you should be grateful his death was quick. Painless.

You don't notice his subordinates until they demand attention as well. Three, just as peculiar as their leader. One demands that everyone bow for their so-called King. When the crowd doesn't listen, still amassed in hysteria, you have a perfect view as his men begin to pick off the crowd one by one. The only ones left are the few that were smart enough to reel in their horror, slinking down to their knees.

And then there's you.

He's slow when he makes his ascension. You wonder if he was the personification of death itself, coming to claim you for his own. You wished he would, but instead, he stops, right by your side. Instead of killing you, he starts to speak.

He has a nice voice.

He says he's been watching you for a while. He says that in order to respect your tumultuous human customs, he will finish this ceremony with you so you two can be wed. Then, he sits down right next to you, urging the shaking priest to continue.

You don't acknowledge him, not at first. You're not smiling anymore. You don't stare into the remaining crowd, too scared to see who you also lost. Instead, you look down at your hands, draped in jewelry and henna. You continue to stare, reminiscing how just ten minutes ago, you were so so happy.

You wince when a hand reaches over to roughly grab your arm. It doesn't hurt, but it easily could have.

"You don't seem happy," He hisses, "I expect you to behave gratefully. It is an honor to marry a King."

You nod because you're a coward. You value your life more than your dignity.

"Yes, your Majesty," You respond quietly.

"You must not use titles when referring to me," He declares, "From now on, you will call me by my name or husband."

"I don't know your name." You respond.

Of course, you didn't know his name. The monster of the man who entered your life so suddenly. He's silent, and you wonder if that's the last graciousness he'll give you. If he's decided to slay you here, leave you for another more obedient one.

"Meruem," He finally responds, "My name is Meruem."

He doesn't speak another word, intently focusing on the priest. You both sit in silence, hearing the priest shakily recite the mantras, hearing your remaining family quietly sob on the floor.

He acknowledges you once more when he ties the mangal sutra around your neck. It's thin, discrete, and easily hides under your gaudy dress. Still, it feels like a chain that suddenly snaps in place, bogging you down.

You don't remember much after that. It's only after Meruem pulls you up, effectively pulling you back into reality. There are still many rituals to be done. He doesn't seem to care. You don't either.

He leads you away from the altar. Your bare feet hit the smooth tile as you are dragged outside. The anklets create small jingles, bells that ring your perceived fate. The men who came in with him, silently trail behind. The doors close behind you with a sickening thud, locking you away from your dream forever.

You wouldn't be able to bury him.

Meruem suddenly stops, turning back to you. He reaches up to your face as though he is fascinated. You can feel him wipe a tear off your cheek.

You hadn't even realized you'd begun to cry.

"I can make you happy," He promises, his voice small, so much different compared to how he spoke less than ten minutes ago.

You search his face. His eyes show a glimmer of loneliness. Desperation.

It's gone within a moment. The King takes a breath, removing his hand.

"Come," He says, the usual cruelty back in his voice, "We should return to the palace. Your new home."

This one took longer than I thought to have the courage to say my random thoughts about that man. Turned out he’s complicated.

First let’s talk about his amazing muscular body. He’d crash me with just one hand effortlessly.

Sometimes I hope Togashi would let Hisoka and Tserried meet and fight. I’d die from excitement.

Poor Theta, I’m genuinely worried about her fate. I think she’ll help Kurapika get closer to the Prince so they can kill him.

Also poor Pika, I’m worried what will happen to him when he sees Pairo’s head..

That man is worse than the five threats. I hope he’ll stay alive until they reach the dark continent so they let him die alone and painfully there.

By surprise he has friends? Like how did they tolerate his ass talk about male philosophers? Boring hypocrites.

So I ended my trash talk about him. Let’s start my random things I think about.

I think he does have skin care and hair care routine like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho.

He’s homophobic. But he secretly takes liking in men more than women. I don’t make the rules.

Doesn’t mean he’s not into women.

When it comes to sex he is selfish.

Fucks you like an animal in heat, and insults your entire family line while fucking you.

He’s abusive. If you did or say something that isn’t acceptable to his taste expect a slap on your face when you’re alone with him. He would spit on you too.

You can’t get away from him, you’re trapped.

He will remind you how lucky you are, nobody gets the privileges you have or the insane amount of spending you spend everyday, all thanks to him.

He’s generous enough to let you do shopping and get all these clothes and makeup without asking what do you spend all these money on.

But he will not tolerate ignorance and misbehaved brats like you.

Of course you finally knew exactly who you are in a relationship with.

He doesn’t mind raping you, he sees you as one of his belongings he has the right to do anything he wants with you. Your opinion doesn’t matter.

Sometimes he gets a soft spot for you, after a “silly argument” and another abusive episode he will catch you crying where no one can see you, he will hug you and pat your head while saying he’s sorry.

After you’re finished crying he’ll give you a soft kiss on your lips, and says he won’t hit you again.

Of course he’ll do it again. Sometimes he’ll threaten you with a gun or a knife. It gets worse by time.

I have LOVED them as well! So so much :D I am happy Togashi is giving us so much action and development on the mafia side of things. I am curious to see how our 2 conflicts are gonna meet each other and what it will mean for the characters...

As for my thoughts, I will probably have to reread the whole arc at some point, but as for now...

What I have seen of the Heil-Ly family just confirms to me what I mention here. The people of the Heil-Ly have overall a very low level of nen and Morena is clearly using them as sacrifices to start a revolution. I mean... the game metaphor is not subtle... they are pawns in her hands. She has selected a bunch of people unhappy with society and has filled them with promises and dreams, which are clearly gonna go unfulfilled. In a sense, she is treating them as she treats herself, which is psychologically interesting. She sees herself as a lower being (lower than a Prince, she is only level 45, while Princes are level 50). Her plan is nothing, but an elaborated suicide plan, as she herself has told us:

She wants to rip down the whole system, including herself. This is why she gives up on a powerful role in the mafia to try and cause a war between the mafia and the kakin empire...

Now, her people are really just tools in this game, which is why many of them are introduced as people with very humble or normal jobs... they are people you could meet on the streets... very normal...which is why they are getting killed one after one by more expert nen users. All in all, it is interesting to see such inexperienced fighters try to get a grasp on nen and failing to fully make use of it because they lack preparation and thought. It is refreshing considering we have so far mostly seen super talented people.

At the same time, I think the Heil-Ly might have an important thematic role, especially when it comes to the Spiders:

Like, Luini might be an idiot that got himself killed immediately... but he is not wrong here... there has clearly been a shift in the Spiders' role in this arc. In York Shin, they are presented as a destabilizing element. They go out of their way to refuse rules, even if these rules are those of the criminal world... nobody is supposed to steal from the mafia... and yet, they go against both the criminal code and Meteor City's code and start a mafia war. This arc, however, things are different. It is true Chrollo has announced they are going to reach the first deck and steal Kakin's treasures... still, they are so far working with the mafia to preserve the status quo and doing everything they can to destroy the Heil-Ly's family, which this time embodies the destabilizing element. This transformation is also conveyed by how the mafia treats the Spiders: they are seen as celebrities :'''). The group of thieves introduced as mafia's nightmare has now become mafia's idol group...

Now, this doesn't necessarily have to be something negative, but surely it is something that must be addressed... Who are the Spiders? Are they a chaotic immortal element like Chrollo envisioned them to be? Are they an ideal? Or are they deep down a group of people and when they lose a member it actually hurts deeply? And if they are people, then why do they need to steal? Why can't they be content with each other, which is clearly the only thing they care about anyway? Not the treasures, but their comrades?

Speaking of comrades... I love them:

I like how they are absolutely normal soldiers that know nothing about nen. I also like they are presented as loyal to Tserriednich, but far more likable than his other soldiers and I am curious to know more of their relationship with the Prince.

Finally, there is Hisoka... our joker :''') Even this time, he is the most difficult to read and I am especially curious about his next moves and his role this arc...

Longbao Conspiracy

In Chapter 390 of Hunter x Hunter, Zhang Lei refers to Onior Longbao as father.

While some have argued his thoughts are purely deferential or that he is actually referring to Nasubi, I believe Zhang Lei is actually Onior’s son. Zhang Lei being the son of Onior has some very interesting implications. Namely, it would suggest an extremely forethought plan by Onior to put his own blood on the Kakin throne.

ZHANG LEI AND MORENA PRUDO

Before outlining Onior’s plan, I’d like to point out the thematic evidence suggesting Zhang Lei is illegitimate. As a first order of business, let’s look at the similarities between him and Morena Prudo.

Both have very similar Nen abilities.

Zhang Lei and Morena both have group-based abilities that reward the good behavior of their subjects by granting them powers.

Not only that, but both powers implement numeric ‘level’ systems and, stay with me here, transmit their power by mouth.

Not to mention, the two numbers we have seen from Zhang Lei’s beast (1 and 10) are also important in Contagion.

Admittedly, this is probably a coincidence. We’ll have to wait to find out the details of Zhang Lei’s Spirit Beast.

However, the abilities differ in that Zhang Lei’s beast outputs a coin a day, while Morena’s power spreads at a rate solely based on the actions of her followers. These powers reflect their owner’s philosophies. Zhang Lei wants to remain in a position of power, dispersing his coins to worthy subjects and becoming a “great king”. He is patient and methodical, concerned mostly with the aftermath of the Succession War. Despite wanting to enforce the royal hierarchy, I get the sense Zhang Lei really cares about the well-being of his nation and even the world as a whole.

Morena, on the other hand, wants to destroy the royal hierarchy, utterly and completely. She is, in part, motivated by the Kakin practice of scarring bastards and making them second-class citizens. Morena’s subordinates are already causing problems on the lower levels of the Black Whale, but her actual approach is, like Zhang Lei’s, quite long-term. She believes her death on the ship is a foregone conclusion.

“But I like this scar. Without it… I would have slid closer to death… With this scar… I was able to perch on the razor’s edge. In order to destroy this dung heap of a world… I can keep trying just a little more…” – MORENA PRUDO, CHAPTER 378

So an addendum to her ability allows for her will to be inherited by a worthy (level 100) successor.

Morena’s ability functions as a true meritocracy, while Zhang Lei’s is more arbitrary. One is anti-classist, and the other is classist. Both plan far in advance, which is precisely what Nasubi claims is the key to winning the Succession War.

The proxy-war between Morena and Zhang Lei represents a class conflict that is thematically consistent with the story of the Phantom Troupe and the Kakin Empire itself. We often see people in positions of power abusing that power. The lower class (citizens of Meteor City, Gyro) are frequently the primary victims of that abuse. On the Black Whale, it’s the 180,000 passengers belowdecks who will become sacrifices for Nasubi’s Succession War.

Both are heavily associated with religious iconography.

Morena’s crown of thorns associates her with Abrahamic religion. Biblically, the crown of thorns was given to Jesus on the day of his crucifixion to mock his claim of kingship. The symbol of martyrdom also supports the idea that Morena is planning for her own death, believing in her ultimate goal above all things.

Morena is not the first character to be associated with Christianity either. Chrollo Lucilfer bears St. Peter’s cross and is followed by twelve apostles. Both character’s insist on their wills being carried out after death, and both characters hold destructive, anti-classist philosophies.

Zhang Lei’s design, on the other hand, is inspired by Eastern religion, namely Buddhism. In earlier chapters, he had elongated earlobes (these were later retconned). Most importantly, his Spirit Beast resembles a dharmachakra, or “wheel of dharma”. The wheel itself represents wisdom, knowledge, and insight, while the turning of the wheel can signify revolutionary change. This led to outstanding monarchs being referred to as chakravarti, or “wheel-turning kings”.

Both are associated with cosmic imagery.

Zhang Lei is associated with the sun, while Morena Prudo is associated with the moon. Chakras feature prominently as solar symbols, and Zhang Lei’s Spirit Beast is no exception. The Spirit Beast’s power also revolves around the concept of a day.

Morena’s ability is centered around the numbers 20-23, which have significance in astronomy. Specifically they represent the possible dates for equinoxes and solstices. 20 is the level at which Morena’s subordinates gain a new ability. 21 is the maximum number of murders required to reach level 20.

22 is the maximum number of infections allowed by Contagion, and the number of Morena’s followers. 23 is the former, but including Morena. And of course, Morena’s most prominent follower, Luini, sports a crescent moon scar.

This solar/lunar dichotomy first appeared with Chrollo’s stolen ability, sun and moon.

Note the plus (+) and minus (-) signs. They are similar to something else we’ve seen.

Whether this is significant remains to be seen. For me, the solar and lunar imagery is an extension of shadow and light, which has been an important theme throughout the entire series. You cannot have shadow without light, and vice versa. This sentiment is echoed by both Zhang Lei and Morena.

Now, these comparisons don’t necessarily mean Zhang Lei is the son of Onior, but they do indicate a thematic link between Zhang Lei and Morena.

THE SCARRED ROYALS

When Morena is introduced, special attention is given to the treatment of bastards by the Royal family, specifically the parallel incisions made on their faces. These scars are visible on the faces of the other mafia bosses, each in different locations.

The width of the scars matches how the razors are being held in the previous image. It’s a nice detail by Togashi.

Special attention is given to the practice of facially scarring illegitimate children, which I believe served to remind us of the illegitimacy of Onior and Brocco Li. In other words, Togashi was pointing us to the importance of illegitimacy, and the possibility of an unscarred bastard.

The scarred royals are said to be “illegitimate children of the King”, but Zhang Lei may not be a child of the king at all. Whether Nasubi expects the truth or not, questions of legitimacy are consistent with historical succession wars from which I believe Togashi is taking inspiration..

I want to take this time to point out the possibility of a Nen Beast being granted to an illegitimate heir. I don’t want to get too much into the mechanics of the Seed Urn here, but I will say I believe the rules stated by Nasubi’s butler, Nugui, are being superimposed on the urn as the conditions for the succession contest. It is very Togashi-like for the conditions of an ability to involve explaining the rules (think Genthru).

So, I don’t think it’s a coincidence we are specifically told participants must be children of Nasubi’s legal wives, rather than children of Nasubi.

This would seem to indicate Nasubi is aware of Zhang Lei’s illegitimacy and willfully allowed him to participate in the Succession War, but I don’t think that’s the case. While Nasubi may have suspected Zhang Lei was illegitimate at some point, I believe this rule shows he has now disregarded the possibility.

My primary reason for believing a conspiracy exists is that I don’t see the significance of Nasubi allowing illegitimate children to participate. It’s not very consistent with themes of family and legacy in the succession arc. If he’s unaware, however, it lends significance to Coventoba or some other party uncovering that secret.

Zhang Lei’s mother, on the other hand, must at least be aware of the possibility Zhang Lei is not Nasubi’s son. In fact, the most likely scenario is that Tang Zhao Li is in on the conspiracy to put a Longbao on the Kakin throne. As of Chapter 390, she is the only queen to be explicitly linked to the mafia of which her child is a benefactor.

As for why she would want to put a Longbao on the throne, remember that Nasubi’s outward-facing goal with the Dark Continent expedition is to reaffirm his status as a historic king. Zhang Lei’s bastardry, especially if he “wins” the Succession War, would have the opposite effect, tarnishing Nasubi’s legacy.

I expect to see some interactions between the queens and the mafia soon.

ZHANG LEI AND ONIOR LONGBAO

Going back to the panel in Chapter 390, there seems to be an implication of revelation.

This is suggested by the thought bubble outlines and the fact that they are separated and framed as they are (and the exclamatory delivery). That’s enough for me to believe Zhang Lei isn’t referring to Nasubi.

I also don’t believe his words are deferential for two reasons. Firstly, Zhang Lei and Onior don’t actually seem to have that close of a relationship.

And it would be difficult for them to have such a relationship anyway, as scarred royals are expected to remain outside of the public eye.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, their philosophies are at odds with each other. Onior firmly believes the “haves should be separated from the have-nots”. Specifically, resources should be concentrated in the few, and the masses should get virtually nothing.

While Zhang Lei may believe fundamentally in hierarchical separation and classism…

…his actions show he is someone who is rather altruistic.

It’s Tubeppa who initially paints this picture of Zhang Lei, calling him indulgent. Because she is “smart”, we are inclined to believe her. But this is one of the things Togashi does very well: distinguishing between logical and emotional intelligence. Leorio lacks logical intelligence, but is able to completely unravel Kurapika’s character at the end of Yorknew City. Kurapika is one of the most logically intelligent characters in the series, but is unable to sort out his own emotions, much less the emotions of others (i.e. Pakunoda). So, we shouldn’t always believe what one character says about another. Zhang Lei is indulgent, but he is also altruistic. He is tolerant, but he is proud; kind, but cruel.

Shimano is another example of a character with high emotional intelligence.

If Zhang Lei saw Onior as a father figure, he would probably act very similarly to him, but he doesn’t. And this is why I believe the conspiracy is all about family and pride. Family is, after all, a important theme of the succession arc, as Oito explains:

THE LONGBAO CONSPIRACY

One interesting facet of Zhang Lei’s illegitimacy is the suggestion of a plan by Onior to ultimately win the last generation’s Succession War. The importance of waiting patiently is emphasized throughout the Succession Arc, first by Beyond Netero.

Then, by Nasubi.

And, finally, by Onior himself.

Intuitively, the main thing attributed to being a scarred royal is the fact that you can’t inherit the throne. While Morena has a very nihilistic viewpoint on the Succession War, her views would not be shared by the other bastards, who would be embittered by their status as “second-class citizens”. We learn that while Onior was aware of the Succession War, he was not completely informed of the details.

However, I propose he hatched a plan for his child to win the next Succession War as a legitimate participant. This probably involved conspiring with Tang Zhao Li, either before or after she became involved with Nasubi. And I believe this is one of the main ways the Succession War and mafia plotlines will connect. The presence of the Phantom Troupe may cause some friction in Kurapika and Zhang Lei’s alliance.

The Judicial Department will also probably be involved. An important component of Zhang Lei’s conversation with Onior is the fact the meeting is held in person. This is due to the presence of Benjamin’s spy, Coventoba.

There are other spies present, but Coventoba seems to be the main player here and the most likely to uncover Zhang Lei’s parentage.

There are two things team Benjamin can do with the information of Zhang Lei’s visit. The first is to perform some offensive action during that time. The second is to look into Zhang Lei’s visit and uncover what was discussed. If they find Zhang Lei is on the cusp of learning Nen, they may attempt to take him out before then. Let’s say, instead, they uncover Zhang Lei’s parentage. What could they do with this information? I believe uncovering the conspiracy will provide grounds for Zhang Lei’s detainment by the Judicial Department.

However, Zhang Lei has already put his hand in the Seed Urn and become a legitimate contender for the throne. Even if the Judicial Department confirms the rumors, they will not take significant action, nor will they want to. As Melody says, they have made themselves independent from the Kakin royalty, and Zhang Lei has committed no crimes (unlike his parents). They may even cite the very rules Nasubi put in place for his succession contest. But these are mostly tinfoil guesses at this point. There are too many mysteries surrounding Zhang Lei.

And ultimately the point of this post is to shed light on the conspiracy itself, not on Zhang Lei’s endgame. I have some ideas about that, but they’ll have to wait for another time.

Short version: Zhang Lei is the son of Onior Longbao and Tang Zhao Lei, who are involved in a long-term plot to seat their child on the Kakin throne.

Hello everybody! Today i've decided to share the th tought of mine, who's just as i said a THOUGTH OF MINE. As some of you may remember, some time ago i've talked about Killua and Fugetsu. Today i pick up the subject of the similiarities between the two. So let's get it started!

1. Sibilings.

Like i've said in the other post, killua and alluka's and Kachou and Fugetsu's releationships have many things in common. The fact that one brother/sister decides to protect the other, their own way of interact with each other, the complicated family situations and the Extreme measure of escaping to get freedom. As we all know, while Killua and alluka suceeded in their plan, for Fugetsu and kacho the thing was stopped almost from the beginning. Maybe in the next chapters they will do it too, but we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for their storyline.

2. Their families.

The Zoldycks and the Hui gou rou. Two of the most famous and relevant families in the HxH world. While the 1st ones are the most rinomated assassin's family on the place, the 2nd are the Kakin Empire royal family. Each got their own arc, with the 2nd ones who started again only today. In each the kids have been put in a sort of prespective by their own parents; as Silva and Kikyo always expected from Killua to be a great assassin, as everyone has noticed his incredible talent, Nasubi and/or Seiko expects form Fugetsu and/or Kacho to be the next kakin king. And what they really wanted was to just be normal kids/teens, being happy with the ones they care.

3. Just a child.

This phrase has been said only by two characters while referring to them: Knov and Mizaistom, during the chimera ants arc and the succession war arc respectively. This in a point reflects even what we've said before about themselves, but that's only the iceberg's tip.

4. The needle.

Another thing that connects our mains is a simple needle/needle ball. Always in the CAA, Killua has been put in the desperate situation of a fight against a chimera ant to protect Gon, incapable of using nen. In that moment he heard his brother Illumi tolding him to escape, as only his Force of will helped him to remove the needle Illumi himself has put into him. In the succession war, we discovered that a royal guard has used his ability against Fugetsu, which consist on a needle ball attached to the target. The ability can be stopped permanently only if the target itself removes the needle ball. Similiar to something?

5. Thinking.

As saw many times in the manga, killua has shown a great Quick thinking ability that helped him really much. Also Fugetsu has an analytical mind, as she figured out the way "magic worm" works, to the point she reacher tier 3 without problem.

6. Unaware of...

Getting back to the starting point, we can realize that they don't always know all the details, even tought is just to protect them. After the 1st escape attempt, Kacho was replaced by her nen spirit beast, who's pratically copied everything from the original. Same technical way is for Gotoh, as he was replaced in order that Killua and alluka will never know about his murder. Also Fugetsu doesn't know about Kacho yet.

Well, this is. I just repeat that this is JUST A TOUGHT OF MINE, and we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for the next chapters.

hm I know melody’s being held for questioning but I kind of can’t believe she wasn’t arrested by the kakin empire forces for immobilizing every single person on board the ship who heard her? with no warning? I feel like benjamin’s royal army and most of the guards would push a lot harder for legal action against her because from a security standpoint that can be ruinous (obviously) but also even if there wasn’t a succession war, just with basic commonsense you would know that not being able to move for 30 seconds can be really dangerous. if you’re disabled, if you’re sick/injured, or taking care of someone sick/injured, if you’re cooking with fire, if you’re around bodies of water, if you have young kids to watch, etc.

Kakin Empire princes; Would they treat you right? (An analysis)

1, Benjamin

Not really surprisingly, yes! He would be a good partner. I think he would prefer someone who’s physically more active and thus be more influenced by that but I think he’d treat you right.

2, Camila
