My original plan was for my zine to be a spiritual successor to Weekly World News, a parody tabloid that exclusively ran those nonsense stories you'd see in X-Files and Men in Black, "Local Woman in Menage-a-Trois With Bigfoot," "Aliens Stole my Carburetor," "Elvis Lives, Makes a Living Impersonating Himself in Vegas," that sort of thing, straight up comedy, but as the project evolved I decided I wanted it to be more than just sensationalist headlines. I want it to invoke the feeling I got from reading magazines in the early 2000s, before the medium evaporated. I grew up on Nick Mag and Mad Kids, my sisters had celebrity gossip teen zines, so I want my zine to appeal to young millennials and old zoomers who grew up right at the same time as we did, right when our magazines of choice all closed up shop, 2005 to 2012ish, around that time. I don't want it to be a zine for kids, I want it to feel as though those old magazines grew up with their audiences; what if Nick Mag were still around today but aimed at 20-somethings?

I want my zine to be somewhere between the puerile Mad Kids and the monotonous Mad (Mad is like SNL, I'm sure it used to be good and clever, but now it's a hollow facsimile of itself trying desperately to stay relevant while coasting off it's former glory; it used to be a cultural tentpole everybody knew and consumed, but now it's a sideshow you only hear about when people complain because it's stale and obvious. It expects applause when it reaches for the low hanging fruit). My point is, I want the content of my zine to be comedic without being childish, and I want it to have a backbone of sincerity without being boring. Because that's my biggest problem, magazines for adults are boring! Runner's World? Men's Health? Guns and Motorcycles? Homes and Gardens? Nat Geo Traveler: 100 Beautiful Vacation Spots You'll Never Afford to Visit? Who reads that stuff? And then there are all those Nerd™ mags, those glossy $15 ads for marvel and dc and harry potter, [Movie That Just Came Out] Magazine or [Topical K-Pop Band] Magazine, ephemeral cash grabs, corporate masturbation, "look at all our IPs! Look at all the keys we can jingle in front of your face!" I want mine to have substance, I don't want it to feel like the stuff RedLetterMedia's Nerd Crew made fun of ("Very cool," "Very cool," "YOU KEEP HITTING THOSE HOMERUNS, DISNEY!")

This is all pretty nebulous right now, nothing but buzzwords, a bunch of feelings I want to evoke but no concrete steps on how I'm going to evoke them. I need to come up with specific articles and columns to fill the pages.

One section will be dedicated to the crazy headlines I originally envisioned, "Benedict XVI Unretires, Sparks Holy Civil War Against Francis," "Scientist Proves Earth Neither Globe Nor Flat, Secret Third Thing," "GOP Senator Reveals Himself as Antichrist, Party Leaders Say They'll Still Vote for Him Over Dems"

One section will have short stories and art, like those old sci-fi/fantasy pulp mags

News and opinion pieces and predictions without the right-wing bias that comes from being owned and operated by trillion dollar monopolies

I want there to be a sports page that talks about sports and teams that don't exist. I don't follow sport news, so it's all incomprehensible to me, and this section would recreate that confusion by talking about made up shit with the same enthusiasm and intensity as real sportswriters, "the Austin Bagpipers traded star quartermaster Jequon Woodruff to the Fargo Twineballs in a major blow to manager Ted Sunderson's ego. He may take it out by firing his fourth coach this mini-season. We'll have to wait and see how the Bagpipers fare against the Albuquerque Weirdos in the April Audacity bracket next year."

My zine will have whatever I want it to have in the moment, and if I get feedback from readers then I'll focus on what's the most popular. More of this, less of that, bring back this one-off column, stop this recurring piece altogether, que sera sera.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, so the rest of 2022 is for me to figure out what exactly issue 1 is gonna include.

If it was legal for me to throw hands with people or my keys at people's cars who nearly run me over, I would not hesitate.

This focking White™ dude in a Range Rover nearly hits me in the cross-walk, drives around, chooses to not go into the spot he could go into and proceeds to nearly hit me again. And then the fucker waves at me, like... Bitch... you cannot fucking miss me! I'm a fat person wearing a bright indigo shirt with flowers on it!

Like... the spatial unawareness some of these drivers have is just mind-blowing. Like, yes, he's supposed to stop when someone is walking the crosswalk and doesn't need to stop when there is crosswalk. BUT, when he's pulling in and out of parking spot three times, that gives me time to cross. But, then all of a sudden, fucker changes his mind and coasts past me, waves at me like I'm gonna say "it's fine you almost hit me twice now", so I just give a death glare.

And some people gonna be like "I would've mowed you down". Well, you could try, but the moment I through my keys at you, it's self-defense, bitch. Is that $6000 worth of damage to your car worth it, my dude? Just to get your kicks on or get a woody? Because that's money that YOU would have to shell out, not me lol.

Tommy Slater probably has at least one sibling and is the oldest- it's why he's so good with the kids at Camp Nightwing and why he understands where Cindy is coming from when it comes to Ziggy. I totally hc him as coming from a big family with probably at least one little little sibling that he used to babysit after school

Tommy is sort of the golden boy of Shadyside- he wasn't head of the football team or the class president but instead he was just that one guy who was really popular just because he was so,,,, nice???? Even if he was never declared captain of the baseball team, he was probably looked at as that- also, he's definitely the pitcher of Shadysides team and I feel like if the curse didn't exist having a player like Tommy would've given Sunnyvale a run for their money

He will cut off all the sleeves off his shirts if left alone for too long - Cindy is about 65% or more of his impulse control

Probably wasn't allowed to go out during week-days due to all his Responsibilities™ and could only really hang out with people he knew from sports or those he had study-groups with- ends up making him have a lot of friends but makes him feel like he's not close with any of them

who is the most affectionate?

they’re both grossly affectionate but probably danny,  just because he loves her so much and based on their careers,  they aren’t always together.  so when they are they have to make up for lost time and are always touching,  and sometimes will just forget they’re in a room full of friends to a point people throw things  at them.  they’re lucky their relationship never broke up the band because they’re so gross.

who initiates the handholding?

they both do 🥺i don’t think either does it more than the other.  they just reach for each other’s hands regularly. especially if they’re out with the boys and their gfs, they’ll be having two completely different conversations with different people with their backs to each other but then danny will reach back for her hand and they’ll hold hands anyways.

who worries more for the other?

i think it depends on the day and who is the one out.  i don’t think either of them worries about the other too much because they’re both so chaotic. but danny does worry about anna when she goes out with em sometimes because it isn’t like things Haven’t happened. and anna worries it hits a certain time when the boys are all out together.

the only times he really has worried about her was after her accident,  pre-them even dating ...  and then obviously her entire pregnancies with all three of their kids.

 anna probably.  not because danny won’t ask for help if he needs it,  but anna needs help reaching things or smaller things like that more than he does.  but honestly,  neither of them probably have to ask much.  they probably just have to be like   “babe?”   and the other immediately knows what they need,  so does that even count?

danny because he’s stupid.  it’s why all of spook plus all the girlfriends have a key to their apartment just in case.

they both do, especially when they have to get up and head out early,  or if they’re busy so they aren’t seeing each other much.  danny also sends a lot of voice memos of little songs about missing and loving her because he’s disgusting.

they can both sleep when the other isn’t there,  just because they have to.  anna travels sometimes and danny tours regularly. but danny can’t sleep without saying goodnight and i love you at the very least. often he likes to fall asleep on facetime because he can pretend she’s there.

danny,  and he made a real show of it.  a new song,  a rented out venue,  all their friends.  it went straight into an engagement party because he knew she’d say yes. it’s truly disgusting.

who introduced the other to their family first?

danny probably introduced anna to maggie first,  however he probably met her parents before she met his.  just because she’s from the city and his parents live out of state.  he doesn’t see his own family very often other than maggie,  so it took a while for anna to meet his parents and his brother.  but they met when they were still just friends,  danny inviting anna to go to the vacation house his parents rented over the summer on the coast so she could join in on the reese family shenanigans,  and of course spook always comes for a few days too.

anna with danny’s because it’s such a mess all the time,  and so Fluffy.  she always has to push it out of the way,  and probably makes fun of his bandanas all the fucking time because he deserves it.  he plays with her hair sometimes too, but not as much. but he also tries to learn how to braid her hair because he’s That Boyfriend™ 

who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated?

they both do when necessary, but danny is more of the consistent cook in their apartment,  especially in the morning so he always makes sure they have breakfast. but they’re both pretty good with eating, they’re not really the skip a meal type so it’s not much of an issue for them. but when the other goes out drinking they both play nurse for each other the next morning. with a lot of teasing.

who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other?

they’re both very big at standing up for each other.  they were friends before they started dating,  and that loyalty really is their foundation. from the get go if anyone was a dick about them dating, or when fans of spook make any comments about any of the gfs/wives, danny and all the boys are the first to shut it down. danny might stand up for anna a  LITTLE  more only because she lays into him with spook about everything else. but that’s all in good fun so it’s fine.

who is the most likely to prepare a surprise for the other?

danny,  case and point the proposal.  he loves a good surprise and he always has luke as the best wingman top pull those off. nick not so much, but luke is the best.

who makes the other pinky promise not to do certain things?

anna makes danny pinky promise things,  and it’s rubbed off on him. sometimes he does it too, but it’s still mostly anna. but he sticks to his word and adds the stupid “cross my heart and hope to die” thing while drawing a little x over his chest like the fool he is.

who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch?

anna,  and then she usually sleeps on the couch with him.  danny will usually carry her back to their room because he’s pretty much mastered the art of it without waking her up. he’s v proud of that.
