I think my absolute favourite thing about Jane Austen's Emma is that it's a love story about two best friends. They've known each other for two decades, so they know the other inside and out. And they fall in love with each other. Despite the fact that Emma meddles in others' lives and that Mr Knightley scolds her for it, they fall in love. And they don't just fall in love with the other's positive attributes, but their negative ones too. They love every part of the other, and that's beautiful.

And then he moved into HER house instead of bringing her to his, which was unheard of at the time and would've been seen as pretty embarrassing, even emasculating for a landowner not to live in his own house, but he puts her needs over all of that.

How to pick an SRD (System Reference Document) for your TTRPG idea!

I'm a huge proponent of finding the right system to build your TTRPG on (often called an SRD). This post'll be a short summary of my three SRDs, but I encourage any TTRPG designers to do a post on their own system(s) so people know their options! My goal isn't "More games on my systems." It's simply "More games."

Caltrop Core "Classic" has over 206 games created on it, many by first-time designers. But in my opinion, all 3 SRDs are beginner friendly.

This is your first time making a TTRPG

You want something straightforward

You know you like CC and already have an idea for it

Caltrop Core EX

Use if… 

You want tactical combat and don’t mind writing lots of d4 tables

You don’t want tactical combat but still want tactical narrative choices

The idea of always rolling 3d4 sounds elegant to you rather than boring

(To be clear, EX is NOT a 2e, and you won’t have to change any of your old CC games to a new edition or anything. EX is simply another way to make a game.)

Die historischen Gebäude entlang der Straße sind in einem schlechteren Zustand als früher und viele von ihnen wurden nicht gepflegt oder renoviert. Die Fensterläden sind verwittert und die Balkone sind verrostet und bröckelig. Einige Gebäude sind leer und verlassen und scheinen auf den Verfall zu warten.

Die Blumenkästen, die früher die Straße entlang geschmückt haben, sind verschwunden und die Gehwege sind jetzt in einem schlechteren Zustand. Es gibt weniger Geschäfte und Restaurants, und diejenigen, die noch geöffnet sind, scheinen weniger gut besucht zu sein als früher.

Die Straßenbeleuchtung funktioniert nur teilweise und es gibt dunkle Ecken, die in der Nacht unheimlich wirken können. Auch gibt es mehr Graffiti und Müll, der auf der Straße herumliegt.

Trotz dieser Veränderungen hat die Knighthouse Alley noch immer ihren Charme und ihre Geschichte. Es ist immer noch möglich, das Gefühl einer vergangenen Zeit zu erleben, wenn man durch die Straße geht, und es gibt immer noch einige Geschäfte und Restaurants, die das Viertel am Leben erhalten. Es gibt jedoch auch eine spürbare Herausforderung für die Gemeinde, um das Viertel wiederzubeleben und ihm neuen Glanz zu verleihen.

"The Vintage Emporium" - Ein charmantes Antiquitätengeschäft mit einem breiten Angebot an historischen Möbeln, Büchern und Kuriositäten. Das Geschäft befindet sich in einem historischen Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und bietet eine gemütliche Atmosphäre zum Stöbern und Entdecken.

"The Book Nook" - Eine kleine Buchhandlung, die auf gebrauchte Bücher und Raritäten spezialisiert ist. Die gemütliche Einrichtung mit bequemen Sesseln und einer Kaffeemaschine lädt zum Verweilen und Lesen ein.

"The Farmers' Market Square" - Ein zentral gelegener Platz, auf dem jede Woche ein lebhafter Bauernmarkt stattfindet. Hier findest du lokale Produkte wie Obst, Gemüse, Käse und handgemachte Waren wie Seifen und Kerzen. Der Platz ist von historischen Gebäuden und einem Glockenturm umgeben, der regelmäßig Konzerte gibt.

"Anansie´s Kitchen Palace" - Ein von schwarzen familiengeführtes Restaurant, das traditionelle Hausmannskost aus verschiedenen Ländern serviert. Das Restaurant ist in einem historischen Gebäude untergebracht und bietet eine gemütliche Einrichtung mit warmen Farben und einem Kamin. Die Speisekarte bietet hausgemachte Gerichte wie Fleischpasteten, Kartoffelbrei, frisch gebackenes Brot und Spezialitäten aus Südafrika. Und jeden letzten Samstag im Monat gibt es einen Karaoke Abend.

"The Artisan Alley" - Ein bezauberndes Gässchen, das sich der lokalen Handwerkskunst widmet. Hier findest du kleine Kunstgeschäfte und Ateliers, die handgefertigte Produkte wie Schmuck, Keramik und Textilien anbieten. Der Weg ist mit bunten Blumenkästen und Kunstwerken dekoriert und bietet eine charmante Atmosphäre zum Schlendern und Entdecken. Sie ist einer der Verbindungsgassen zum Marktplatz.

Here are some shorter horror games I’ve played over the last few weeks. It’s a dark season, friends.

Sanatorium Escape by Mychal Sanders

great use of horror elements in an interesting story format

play if you’re (not) afraid of the dark

multiple endings

You wake up in a strange, white room. A voice calls to you through the speaker by the door: “Good evening, Patient Zero.” A very tense, explorative solo adventure! The story is gripping and atmospheric, aided by the sometimes genuinely weird and scary prompts you carry out in your own home and the interesting format it’s presented in. Some commitment on your part is needed for it to unfold in all its glory, but it’s totally worth it. I was pleasantly surprised how much impact a small game like this can have on me. You’ll need a D6 to play and can either use a separate journal or write in the margins of the document (which is what I did). There is an accompanying playlist that goes nicely with the game. Ideal for those lonely weekend nights where nothing else is going on and you have an hour to spare.

Red Snow by John Thomas Battle

excellently thought-out layout and writing create a haunting atmosphere

Snow, all around you. Except for that red patch over there. This managed to wring me out like a dish cloth in just a few minutes. Layout and writing make this game an experience to remember, the mechanics are brutal and heart-wrenching. It’s no joke to call this a survival-horror game despite it being quite short and simple (in the best way). Don’t expect an easy win or a happy ending - this is no feel-good adventure romp. You’ll need a couple of dice (d6, d4, d12, d20) and a piece of paper or notes app to play, although in this case I recommend paper for a more permanent feel. Mind that you play as yourself and that’s meant quite literally; some prompts will require you to weave in information from your life and immediate surroundings. Personally, I love how immersive this makes the game, but it can be a deal breaker for you. Note the soundtrack recommendation - it’s really good!

super short in-between game; easy to set up and play

Escape the office building of the LIMINAL Corporation in this one page solo rpg. Also, you really need to pee. This is a super short and fun “dungeon crawler” if you will; the mechanics are immediately clear, setup is a breeze and gameplay swift and satisfying. The short and sweet texts are well written and leave you wanting more. Using a suit from a standard deck of cards, you build your own random office layout to traverse. Rolling a D6 determines which of your three stats increases (Desperation, Navigation and Intuition) and if you can leave a room card face up to build your evacuation plan. There are multiple endings depending on what you manage to max out first - and it can get pretty close! I can see myself playing this more in the future.
