Why the Ending of KNY is So Sad

spoilers under cut :)

Demon Slayer, or Kimetsu No Yaiba, is one of the most popular anime/manga series. Written by Koyoharu Gotouge, the series has amassed millions of fans and love. The series ended with Muzan being defeated, but at a very devastating price. All but 2 of the Hashiras were dead, the two being Giyuu & Sanemi, and thus the Demon Slayer Corps was disbanded. There was no need for it, after all, since the demons were defeated. Nezuko was turned back into a human and Tanjiro recovered from his almost-transformation into a demon. The extended ending is Chapter 205.5, where the series shows the reincarnations/future generations of the characters, but that’s not the ending I will be writing about.

To start this essay, I want to focus on the aforementioned Giyuu & Sanemi. The reason this detail makes me so sad is that they were the only Hashiras left. All the other Hashiras, their friends, died while fighting and never got to see if they won or not. They were left all alone, minus the other characters like Tanjiro and such. Giyuu had to feel this multiple times, this time and also when Sabito & Makomo passed away during Final Selection and he was the only one out of the three that survived. This is almost the same situation. This is also true for Sanemi, as his mother was turned into a demon and ate his family. He also technically felt the pain of losing a friend, except with Genya, his brother. He lost the chance to have a good relationship with him, at least, until they finally did. Because they both lost their families, they found a parental figure in Urokodaki (Giyuu) & Ubuyashiki (Sanemi), in my opinion. Sanemi and Giyuu are very similar because of this, which only makes this point sadder.

Another reason is the deaths of Obanai & Mitsuri, and honestly their characters in general, but that’ll be another essay. They died while professing their love in each other's arms. During this, Obanai said to Mitsuri that she made him feel like a normal boy. Given his background, this makes sense. He was the only boy to be born in his family for generations, and his heterochromia didn’t help his alienation. He was treated as if he was an alien, but Mitsuri didn’t. She loved him and he loved her. Just like Kaburamaru helped Obanai escape from his cell, Mitsuri helped him escape from his alienated feelings. His eyes, which were the reason why the snake demon his family worshipped let him live longer, were also loved by Mitsuri. She loved the way he looked at her with them. And Mitsuri, who felt she hadn’t contributed enough to the fight, was loved so much by Obanai. When Mitsuri told him this, Obanai told her how much she had helped him, in ways she didn’t even know about. Her lifelong dream was to get married, and she never did. But, they promised each other, they would marry if they found each other in another life.

The third reason why is that Nezuko is turned back into a human. The whole series, the reason behind every one of Tanjiro’s actions was to turn Nezuko into a human again. They were together the whole time and had to witness each other in pain. They helped each other and, though one of them was a demon, they continued to love each other. So when Nezuko was finally human again, it made the ending so great. All of Tanjiro’s (& others like Lady Tamayo's) efforts finally paid off. After years, they finally got to return to their normal lives, as two humans.

I will, for my final point, be talking about multiple things in this one paragraph, as they aren’t really enough to merit their own. Yushiro paints Lady Tamayo after her death, never once thinking of anything else but her. Kiriya Ubuyashiki, at only 8 years old, was left to be the head of his family after his father's death and forced to be in charge of the Demon Slayer Corps. Sanemi & Giyuu most likely would die soon after the ending of KNY, as their demon slayer mark would’ve made them die before reaching 25 years of age, and they’re both around 21 years old. Tanjiro turned back into a human because of Nezuko’s love for him. And finally, because it’s the end of demon slayer.

In conclusion, Kimetsu No Yaiba’s ending is very devastating, and not just because it’s the ending of an amazing series. It has brought me to tears multiple times and has not left my mind, even months after finishing it. I hope this essay was good and I hope it didn’t bring back too many painful memories.
