I've read your Mike post and even if I ship mileven I agree with most of it expect ofc the internalized homophobia part. So I will ask what would change for you if Mike is confirmed straight and doesn't have internalized homophobia? Would you dislike Mike?
Hi!!
Well if he truly doesn't have internalized homophobia and is in fact straight, then Mike is still smart, compassionate, brave and someone that would fight for the people they love. However, I would say the writers messed up his character/storyline.
First, sidelining him as El's boyfriend and nothing more since season 3. He doesn't have an storyline for himself in this scenario. He is just a boy who can't say ily to his girlfriend. Even if they wanted to go for only that rote, they haven't even gone deep into that. They could have Mike actually explaining how their parents relationship messed up his head, his trauma and all, witch is what most people speculate. But they decided for "Mike can't say ily because he is scared that it's gonna hurt when El dumps him" (?).
Second, his storyline in S3 and S4 are basically the same. "Mike is only 14", you would say. However, characters need to have a grown even if they are young. A character need to go from point A to point B. Look at the other kids who are also 14 yo. A character can be young and immature but they need to show how this is changing throughout the seasons with their actions and behavior. Look at the difference between Will in S3 and Will in S4 for example. He was also sidelined but even with him having the same struggles as in S3, he behaves completely different about it in S4 and it shows that he has grown.
Mike and Els relationship also is the same as S3. Mike lies to her, she gets mad and dumps him in S3 and they separate, then El lies to Mike (fact that is completely forgotten btw) but since he can't say ily she gets mad, fight with him and they separate again.
They ad unnecessary drama into Will and Mike's relationship too. There are so many ways to portray Will's sexuality without Mike involved or without Mike behaving the way he did in S3. Mike completely ignoring Will in favor of his relationship.
Why? Will could have been jealous and he was, but that was not what leads to their rain fight or their fight at Rink o Mania, is the fact that Mike ignores Will to focus on El and they were suppose to be best friends. Some people gets mad with Will for call him out on it as if he should have just accept this treatment and is acting based only in jealous.
So, if this doesn't have a deep meaning, out of nowhere Mike started acting as a bad friend. And that's the opinion of the GA. Search Mike Wheeler on Google and you will see for yourself. Even on reddit, the most mleven place you can find, there are people saying the same thing.
And that's really sad, as I said in my other post, people tends to hate on him without trying to understand the meaning of his actions. Could this behavior be because of depression and trauma? Of course but then they fail to show it. Again, we can only speculate. I know you probably will disagree, but there is more evidence for Mike to have internalized homophobia than to just be depressed, witch we already knew he was.
And that would not explain why his behavior is directed especificaly towards Will, the boy who is in love with him and that he had a deep relationship with in s1 and even more in S2, such a coincidence... Again, Mike is oblivious, he doesn't know, he doesn't suspects that Will is gay and even if he did, he would not treat Will like that only bc of it. Mike is not a homophobe.
And that is on the writers. There are Mike and El shippers that thinks that we will hate Mike if he turns out to be straight, however Mike is not the problem. Is the writers and how they decided to portray him and the relationships around him. Mike will still have the same qualities he had before, I will still like him, however I would just ad bad friend sometimes into his flaws.
ty for the ask!

Certain lyrics that stand out to me in Mike’s Spotify playlist (Part 3)
When Love Breaks Down
Okay, so, here’s one where I think the album cover definitely was intentional when they chose to put this song on his playlist. The same with “A Real Hero”.
In “A Real Hero”s cover, it looks very similar to the scene where Mike and El hold hands while like skipping away from that field (I hope you know what I'm talking about lol)
And in this cover it’s VERY similar to the scene where Mike lets El ride on the back of his bike??? and there’s 4 people on the cover (probably representing Mike, El, Lucas and Dustin while they were looking for Will)
There’s a guy on a motorcycle and a woman is sitting on the same bike behind him with her arms around him and her face squished against his back. She’s wearing a similar outfit to Eleven in Season 1 (the pink dress with a blonde wig, the woman in this wears a pink jacket and she has blonde hair)
This leads to us thinking that maybe the song is from Mike’s point of view (because it’s his playlist duh) and about El. (some parts might still be aimed at Will though)
And guess what…it’s a break up song!! supriseeee!!
“My love and I, we work well together
But often we're apart”
they were apart for 6 months (as were Mike and Will)
“Absence makes the heart lose weight, yeah,”
Mike “the heart” Wheeler… (you are NOT slick we know what you are)
“Oh my, oh my, have you seen the weather
The sweet september rain
Rain on me like no other
Until I drown, until I drown”
ISTFG THE AMOUNT OF WATER IMAGRY AND MENTIONS OF WATER ON THEIR PLAYLISTS AND THE ACTUAL ST SOUNDTRACK KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT CAUSE WHAT DOES IT MEAN. HERE IF YOU WANNA SEE MORE ON THAT.
AND THIS ODDLY REMINDS ME OF THE BYLER FIGHT IN S3 IDK WHY
“When love breaks down
The things you do
To stop the truth from hurting you”
“The lies we tell,
They only serve to fool ourselves,”
I’M LOSING MY MIND. “cause what if they don’t like the truth?”
“She'll never crowd me out
Fall be free as old confetti”
and the use of the word free? again, more on that here. (same post as earlier lol)
(if you’re not comfortable with discussions about sex you should skip to the next song <3)
“You join the wrecks
Who leave their hearts for easy sex”
see, I’m not 100% sure about this part but I’m trying to analyse everything okay
firstly, let’s talk about labyrinth and Romeo and Juliet.
Labyrinth is a movie in which the main character is paralleled to Mike SO much that it’s scary. He even has a poster of it in his room. Go to @connect-dots7 to see more on this. In short, connecting to this particular lyric, Sarah, the main character in labyrinth and she has a big scene where she discovers herself and her sexuality and they’re not even slightly subtle about it with the sexual imagry. The exact same sexual imagery is used with Mike (and some other characters).
Romeo and Juliet is a couple that is paralleled to Mike and El in the way that they were doomed at the start. For example, they fell in love at first sight. Shakespeare used this trope as a joke because he didn’t believe in love at first sight and it’s the same with the Duffers. They also mistook lust for love. Also I’m pretty sure Romeo was sort of using Juliet to get over someone that he actually loved but correct me if I’m wrong.
All I’m saying is, I think this lyric is very important, especially with the mention of “heart”. He’s not following his heart, basically.
(I know discussion of sex is very taboo in the byler community and I don’t understand why? Obviously, sexualising them is different, but just discussing the sexual imagry isn’t bad because it IS there and the Duffers aren’t scared of it. @henrysglock explains it here in a better way than I ever could lol. It’s the double standards between heterosexual couples and homosexual couples. )
anyway
Love Is a Stranger
the album cover is a man holding a heart in his palm? do with that as you will
“Love is a stranger
In an open car
To tempt you in
And drive you far away”
VAN SCENE VAN SCENE VAN SCENE VAN SCENE VAN SCENE
“Love is a danger
Of a different kind”
being different…
“And love love love
Is a dangerous drug
You have to receive it
And you still can't
Get enough of the stuff”
The way “White Rabbit” (the first song to play in st) is about Mike because he’s literally the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland (again, you can read more about it on @connect-dots7 s page) and the song is about drugs????
“Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion”
MORE MENTIONS IF WATER??
And Mike has too much religious imagery around him it’s insane…
“And you're left like a zombie”
There’s a lot of zombie imagery in st too? Wtf is going on help
“It's guilt edged”
Who’s going to be the one to tell him that he doesn’t have to feel guilty for feeling the way he feels about Will?
“You know it's jealous by nature”
Airport scene I’m looking at you…
“False and unkind”
“And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It's an obsession”
Mike it’s okay we’re all obsessed with Will Byers
Beta Girl Lost in Forever
Literally couldn’t find anything about this song lol it’s suspicious...
please tell me if you guys know anything about this song!!

The end of milkvan kinda reminds me of the twist at the end of season one of The Good Place.
For those who don’t know, TGP is a sitcom about a woman named Eleanor who dies and is sent to what she thinks is the “good place,” but (SPOILER) the twist at the end of season one is that she was actually in the “bad place” the whole time.
And there are plenty of hints leading up to this. Bad things were always happening to Eleanor throughout season one. At least for me, as a viewer, the twist worked because I was thinking “this is just how sitcoms are written, things always go awry for comedic effect.” But what was really happening was the writers were playing with my expectations of writing conventions in order to deliver a twist.
Melvin is very similar. There are glaring issues with their relationship, but the main reason people believe they are going to stay together, even if they don’t necessarily like them together, is because this is just how media is usually written. The main guy and the main girl end up together, that just how it works.
And it’s not like the Duffers aren’t intentionally playing into this as well. At the end of seasons 3 and 4, no matter how much time they spend breaking down their relationship, they throw in a last-minute confession to keep up the expectation that this is what’s going to happen. But it’s doesn’t negate any of the work they did to chip away at their rocky foundation.
I think when they finally go through with Byler in season 5, people will have much the same reaction that I did watching the twist from TGP. A moment of “Oh! I totally noticed that it was written wierdly, but I didn’t know why until now!” And I don’t imagine it’ll happen overnight, but I can see people starting to piece together some of the hints the Duffers had left in past seasons. Things like crazy together, the rain fight, Mike standing in front of Will’s closet at the end of s3, etc. It’ll be fun to watch everyone get caught up.

decided i don’t have the energy to formally reexplain mike’s coded language so i’m gonna ramble about it a little (a formatted post is here) but anyway
the attachment to the idea of playing games in mike’s basement being something mike heavily associated with will is well accepted but i never see people talking about the implications of it in regards to the events of season 3. like, we all know mike was projecting his own insecurities onto will in the rain fight, but you know what will does when mike asks if that was what will wanted? he says yes. those same things mike is trying to deny himself are the things will is saying he wants. he wants that too. he wants a life with mike too.
mike never really gets the chance to process what that means until after the byers initially move july 4th, but he immediately falls into that depressed state of refusing to leave his basement or his room. mike spends all his time playing videos games, practically overdosing on the wants he tried to force himself to move on from. he’s coming to the realization that no matter how hard he tries, he’s never gonna be able to pry this love he has for will out of him. it’s too deeply ingrained into who he is. i actually think that his isolation was him realizing he had fallen in love with will, that it wasn’t just a crush he’d could make go away.
what happens after that is that he gives up on trying to yank that part of himself out and accepts it, maybe not enough to stop hiding it but enough that he’s able to acknowledge that he’s gay and that he can reach out to play games and dnd again. he ends up meeting eddie who pulls him out of that depressive state with the hellfire club and giving mike the chance to play again and that connection between mike’s queerness and dnd grows even stronger as a result since eddie and the hellfire club are both heavily queer coded.
but it’s this idea that will reciprocated. that this thing that made mike realize he was in love with will, getting to actually experience a taste of what it would be like to play games for the rest of his life with will, even with how depressing the whole situation was, mike has to face the way that, on some level, he might not be alone in the way he feels. mike knows that he’s in love with will because of the time he’s had to really understand what he wanted and he’d fallen deep into that state of want to the point it was for the worse because will wasn’t actually there. through it all, mike had to have at least had some understanding that will might’ve liked him too. that, on top of meeting eddie and starting to really accept that piece of himself that he’d spent months and months trying to repress leads to the end of s3
at the end, mike reaches out to will and asks if he wanted to join another party. in the context of what that means for mike, knowing that mike has attached that sentiment to being in love, he’s not just asking if will is gonna move on. he’s asking if will still has those feelings, if that fight was too damning for will to hold onto that want to spend forever with mike. will, again, reciprocates. he says he isn’t moving on, that it was impossible for him to do so. in mike’s mind, will is saying he loves him too. it’s different from will’s perspective, but that’s part of how the whole miscommunication issue got so big in the first place. mike felt forced back into a relationship with el and later thought will was completely ignoring him because of the issues with the phone. mike was angry that will had been ignoring him, but i think a part of him felt guilt for the way he’d continued his relationship with will. not that he was expecting a relationship with will, but i think he had had hope at the end of s3 because of what will said. it wasn’t full blown confirmation but it was enough to feed into the possibility. it encouraged that dream, and then mike wasn’t able to follow up on it. but, mike’s romantic wants with will don’t come before their friendship so he was ultimately mad that will had been ignoring him (from his own pov) and it causes this huge misconception. mike has hope that his feelings might be returned and as soon as he has confirmation from el that she doesn’t love him either (from, el) he literally starts flirting with will. we see him get closer and closer to opening up, practically begging for will to understand without him having to actually say it and then the whole thing with the van happens (he knew) and i just
the way mike had actively been pursuing will is insane. we all joke about how mike was flirting but that’s literally what he was doing. he was testing the waters, seeing if will’s feelings were still there, seeing if there was still a chance. will has no reason to assume that’s what mike is doing, but mike assumes he has a shot. that’s why the miscommunication problem is so fucking big. all it would take is will being a little more selfish, thinking he could have something he wants for once and we probably could’ve had them together in s4. it drives me nuts how fucking close we were sometimes and how obvious mike was about it all. mike wasn’t just crushing, he was looking for a relationship there. will only saw the opportunity for being best friends again because he doesn’t know what mike went through after he left and was physically removed from the situation to make understanding that impossible but mike saw the opportunity for a real relationship with will and he tried but he wasn’t confident enough to be direct about it. they were both too shaky on their feet about their feelings and their identities to go further but it was right there
i hate the duffers. they were seriously this 🤏 close to getting it. the damage caused by “don’t stop… you’re the heart.” will never cease to haunt me

i wonder if they plan on bringing up the rain fight again in s5. we talk about how mike biked across town in the pouring rain to apologize but they didn’t actually resolve that conflict. mike couldn’t find will in his house and then the whole thing got brushed off because of the mind flayer. and even though lucas tried to talk to will later, will didn’t let him. and mike never brought it up again.
which is also something uncharacteristic of his relationship with will. will trusts mike more than anyone for a reason, they naturally have that mutual understanding. and mike never lets will take the blame for things. so why did they leave this fight hanging? when we know it was so big it clearly put a strain on their relationship. hell, their fight in s4 parallels that fight because they never got to close that distance, it only kept getting bigger and bigger. and they might have had many heart to hearts and they may have gotten closer to going back to their old dynamic. but the fight is still left unaddressed.
i think they might make a call back to it in s5 and that’s gonna lead to them finally solving their issues. but for that to work they’re going to have to be completely honest about it. about everything. which means mike will have to explain the reasons for his behavior back then in s3, what happened after the byers left, the calls and the letters, his feelings for will. will is going to have to explain himself too, i’m not sure exactly how much, i think for him it will be mostly about the painting, because the truth behind it explains everything for him.
SO. we can expect something very interesting for next season.

im just letting you all know that s1 literally established that Mike’s feelings for Will went beyond friendship. That they had a special bond. Mike and Joyce were the two people that cared THE MOST about finding Will. Mike literally convinced Dustin and Lucas to look for Will. Mike let a random girl he found in the woods STAY AT HIS HOUSE INSTEAD OF SENDING HER AWAY (like he said he would) JUST BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE COULD HELP FIND WILL.
s2 further pushed this because yeah maybe Mike spent 353 days trying to call El on the walkie talkie, but he literally NOTICED EVERY SMALL THING ABOUT WILL ACTING DIFFERENT. FUCKING CRAZY TOGETHER HAPPENED? HE WENT TO WILLS HOUSE AND BEGGED JOYCE TO LET HIM IN. HE STAYED BY WILLS SIDE AT HIS HOUSE, SLEEPING ON HIS FLOOR. HE LITERALLY TOLD WILL HE WAS A SUPER SPY AND HELD HIS FUCKING HAND. HE STAYED IN THE HOSPITAL/LAB WITH WILL EVEN THOUGH HE WAS FUCKING POSSESSED AND TRYING TO MURDER EVERYONE. HE WATCHED THEM TRY TO EXORCISE IT OUT OF WILL WITH HEAT. HE TOLD WILL THAT ASKING HIM TO BE HIS FRIEND WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED WITH NO BACKGROUND NOISE OR MUSIC AND NO ONE ELSE EVER IN THE SHOT. HE LOOKED JEALOUS WHEN WILL DANCED WITH THAT GIRL AT THE SNOWBALL, LOOK AT THE SCENE. HIM AND DUSTIN ARE MAKING THE SAME FACE. ALSO ITS BASICALLY HIM AND JOYCE WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP WILL??
s3 looks like a shit show but IT HAS HINTS. The mall and movie scene with Lumax? Lucas said he was spending romantic time with Max… with Byler? The way Mike KNOWS Will is feeling something in the theater. the way Mike uses his Will voice. THE WAY THEY BOTH BLUSH? Also we can see Mike and El not being very into each other outside of just kissing (which El takes the lead in, ironically). The way Mike is with Will (and lucas) the entire time after lying to El and after she broke up with him. The way Mike looked at El confused when she broke up with him, but made his way across town in the rain to find Will and apologize. The best hint in s3? “Not Possible” and “I love you, too” scenes. Mike’s SMILE when Will says “not possible” to joining another party?? Come ON. Then right after that, his entire awkward demeanor with El. from the rambling about Christmas, to when she asks him if he remembers what he said in the cabin. Then when she says she loves him and kisses him, he stands there with his eyes wide open and he looks shocked. he looks confused, and even after she leaves he looks lost. When the moving truck is pulling away he looks absolutely devastated, but he still looks a bit confused and extremely lost. When he’s hugging his mom, he looks like his whole world crashed down on him. As if he hasn’t been fighting off monsters for the past two years, it looks like Will leaving crushed his entire spirit.
s4 was just so gay it’s not even funny. I’ve talked about Mike in s4 before so I’ll try to keep this short, but my guy’s room. One Way sign pointing to his closet. Buff men on posters. Cmon. The way he dresses fits him a lot, and he seems comfortable and happy in it, but the moment he’s in california he’s wearing the most heinous thing i’ve EVER seen in my life. Bro really said “fuck i gotta play the straight boyfriend roll!!” and threw together an outfit blindfolded bc he clearly can’t pretend very well. He is barely paying attention to El once he notices Will, but then acts all “hey dude broooo can’t hug that’s gay” with him?? As if he didn’t hold this mf so tight and sobbed before he moved away?? Rink-O-Mania was basically Mike staring at Will but never talking to him, then getting mad at Will for not telling him his girlfriend lied to him and being all sad the whole day (after his gf got publicly humiliated in front of the entire rink, even the DJ was in on it) Then got mad at his GF for rightfully sticking up for herself? Cant even WRITE his GF that he loves her. Fights her on THAT and calls her ridiculous, but apologizes to Will for their argument. Tells him he didn’t deserve any of it. Tells him HAWKINS ISNT THE SAME WITHOUT HIM (which basically confirms that Mike was so devastated at the end of s3 because of Will leaving, not El). Then the rest of it is mainly two gay boys pining after each other up until the junk yard (idk there were lots of cars, maybe grave digging scene is better, but i’m thinking of after digging when they’re sitting on a car) scene, where Mike literally says he should’ve just said the words she wanted to hear cuz maybe he’d be with her. He doesn’t love her, he just wants to make sure she’s safe. as he does with all the people he cares about. Then the van scene, the boy is literally staring at Will with heart eyes. He smiles so wide when he unrolls the painting, and he looks disappointed when Will talks ab El. Back in Hawkins when Will is talking about Vecna, Mike literally stares at Will like he did in s2 when Will was talking about the Mind Flayer and being a spy. He grips his Shoulder and says “we will.”, mmm parallels “he won’t”. the shoulder grab parallels the hand hold.
Added bonus: Notice how in every single season after s1, somehow El is separated from Mike, and he spends the majority of his time with Will?
In conclusion, Mike Wheeler is a boy kisser and he’s been head over heels for Will since he asked him to be his friend!!

Passive vs Active Mike analysis: El is going to have to be the one who dumps Mike.
I’ve been having a discussion with some twitter mutuals and we’ve drawn this conclusion, I thought i’d share it with you guys
Mike is very passive in their relationship. In s1, he calls El pretty and kisses her, but that’s the only times he advances their relationship intentionally himself. In s3 they spend a lot of time kissing, but think about that awkward makeout scene - Mike pulls away to sing at her. Mike keeps pulling her hands down away from his face. When they ditch the Party at weathertop, El is the one who says they have to go home.  Later in s3, El is the one who dumps him, and he’s pissed off, but he just takes it. He shows no clear desire to get her to take him back (unlike Lucas, who’s pretty concerned with getting the olive branch from Max.) And then the contrast to his fight with Will that we’re all so familiar with - Mike fights with El, gets dumped, he takes it. Mike fights with Will, Will runs off, Mike actively chases after him through pouring rain to apologise and beg him for forgiveness.
In the S3 end scene where El comes up and kisses him, he just stands there. They don’t talk about getting back together. Mike doesn’t visibly reciprocate in any way, doesn’t even smile. He is passive, he just sort of lets it happen. He even sort of blocks her from kissing him when they’re all hugging as the Byers leave. When Will comes up to him to dump his DnD books, Mike is active, he asks the question to confirm their standing with one another - "What if you wanna join another party?" - and is happy with Will's response.
Another example of Mike's passivity in their relationship is the way Mike takes very little responsibility for their problems. For example, treating El “like garbage/like a pet” in her words, during their relationship in s3. When he lies to her and tries to apologise, he has no idea what he's doing and lets Lucas lead him. The few efforts he does make towards getting her back are supported heavily by Lucas, in fact. When she dumps him at the mall, he's like okay, whatever, no girlfriend then. But when he’s a dick to Will? Instant regret as soon as he realises he's gone too far, he doesn't wait around trying to analyse the situation, he's right out the door and he goes full on grovelling hands-and-knees begging to apologise.
In S4 the same thing happens - he pisses off El, can’t say her loves her, but instead of accepting that responsibility, he denies it and says he does say it (clear lie) and that El’s being ridiculous. When he pisses off Will, he’s straight in there to take responsibility for ignoring Will, he says Will didn’t deserve the bad treatment (and honestly, Will’s not even fully innocent either if you wanna get into that lol). He even apologises going back months and months. He’s passive with El, allowing her to yell at him and makes no real effort to defend himself or fix it. With Will, he’s active - he makes the move to apologise and reconnect.
Excluding their kiss in s1, every time Mike takes initiative and is active in their relationship, it’s never a romantic action. When he’s giving her shelter and food, when he’s calling her every day trying to find her (after she vanished in front of him) and when he and the Byers go on the road trip to find her, none of that is inherently romantic. The one time he says he loves her, she isn't even present, but Mike is desperate not to lose her/for El not to get hurt by their plan. Mike is active when it comes to protecting her.
The one active step he does take in their relationship is the monologue, but is that actually active? He's pretty much constantly being told by other people that being with El is the "right" thing to do - Nancy in s1/2 assumes he's into her, Lucas in s3 tries to help fix their relationship, just like Will in s4. Mike has been led to believe by Will that this will save their relationship, and he has an immense amount of trust in Will, so he follows what he thinks is right and tells her he loves her, because he's afraid she will literally die if he doesn't.
This is why I think El is going to have to be the one who officially dumps him. Mike never takes the initiative in their relationship. He didn't want to talk to her about getting back together in s3, and he didn't want to acknowledge their issues in s4 either. I've seen plenty of people (myself included) who believe that during the scene in Surfer Boy Pizza, El was going to officially break up with him. They got interrupted, and then it was too late.
But starting with s5, we've got the painting lie, and we've got Hopper back, and Mike is back on good terms with Will. El isn't talking to him, and they're dealing with the apocalypse, and it's strongly implied that El knows he was lying to her. I think El's going to dump him in s5, and he's going to ask about the painting, which she knows nothing about. I think that's going to happen fairly early on in the season, maybe even before the time skip, and be the catalyst for a lot of changes (and hopefully some more personal growth for both of them!) But Mike will not take that step himself.

Will Byers Analysis - Between S3 & 4
Something I always think about, is how Will probably didn't even know Mike and El were back together at the end of season 3.
When they had last spoke, part of Will probably thought Mike was talking about something else, which is understandable bc both him and Mike were speaking in code, whether they realized it or not (I didn’t say it/You didn’t have to).
At the very least, Will thought things could go back to how they used to between them; friends (best friends).
When the Byers arrived to Cali, I imagine within the first day, or within the first few days after they settled, it was most likely Jonathan who made the move to phone the Wheelers to talk to Nancy.
Then maybe Will decided he would call Mike once the phone was free or even asked Jonathan to have Nancy just hand the phone to Mike so they could catch up too.
But once Mike got on the phone, something was off. He sounded kind of distant and awkward and it left Will feeling confused.
Maybe Will tried to chock it up as them just needing to get used to living far away from each other, since this distance thing was indeed new for them. They'd been friends for the last decade and hadn't experienced being apart for longer than a week (the week of his disappearance). So, it was bound to be a little weird, for a little while. Right?
But honestly, just thinking about their fight in s3 and the events leading up to it, I wouldn't blame Will for being slightly worried.
Before the rain fight, Will was putting almost all of the time and effort into their relationship. He was fighting for it and Mike was leaving him behind. And that really hurt Will.
And that's what's honestly so incredible about Will's arc in s4, because he's not putting himself through that again.
Yes, he's growing up and he's matured, but he's also come to accept that, based on Mike's actions as of recent (despite what he might have sensed from Mike over the years), those romantic feelings he has for him will NEVER be reciprocated. If he's lucky, Mike will still want to be his friend, and he would be relieved to stay in his life in that way if it's something Mike still wants.
(Which also makes the GA's argument about how they think Will's arc in s5 is going to be about him accepting that Mike will never love him back, fall flat??? Because, Will's already realized that, sis. S4 ending the way it did was in part to make as clear as possible to Will (the unreliable narrator) that Mike cannot love him that way... And so why the hell would s5 confirm that for a second (3) time now? Where is the shock? Where is the value? What is satisfying about that? And why do that, while also holding off on Mike finding out about Will's feelings until the very end? Like... just let that simmer for a second and think about what that actually means in terms of the story going in a satisfying direction that also manages to surprise you... there is literally nothing satisfying about proving Will 'I'm not gonna fall in love' Byers, right...)
So, after about a week since they last spoke on the phone since arriving, a bunch of letters come in the mail: one for Jonathan, four for El, and three for Will (you can probably guess who from the party didn't send a letter to Will...).
And it's as if Will's worst fears are being (re)realized.
In his casual letter exchanges between the party, he talks about DnD and a new art class he's taking with Dustin, joining the basketball team with Lucas and how everything she'd told him about California was right with Max. Super casual catching up with some of his best friends. And yet still, nothing from Mike, arguably his best friend.
And so Will is understandably devastated.
He doesn't understand. Or maybe he does, he just didn't want to believe it.
And so, how Will chose to go about his contact with Mike over the next 'year' makes sense to me (and I support him fully tbh).
I think Will's arc in s4 is beautiful because he has some of the best development of anyone on the entire show. He's not the gay kid being used as a plot device for a heterosexual couple (stay tuned for s5). If anything, we're seeing this character who tried his best to mend his friendship with his best friend (also secret first love) after Mike presumably rejected him (ITS NOT MY FAULT YOU DON'T LIKE GIRLS!), and so, Will is not going to put himself through that again.
He's not going to let himself have hope that there could ever be something more between them, even if he thought so many times before there were moments or signs that Mike could feel the same (BC MIKE DID!!). He has already accepted it's not possible.
He's not going to 'stand in the way' anymore. If Mike wants to be with El, he's going to support them, even if it hurts him and his own feelings.
It's tragic, but it feels so in character for Will and his qualities as a person.
I know a lot of bylers argue that both Mike and Will were in the wrong when it came to them both not staying in touch, and I do agree, completely actually. Especially knowing Mike tried to call Will. HE TRIED. So it's not like he didn't. The miscommunication trope is doing it's magic. We just have to accept that.
And so, fittingly, when confronted, Mike doesn't tell Will he called (a lot). He lets Will think that he barely called and deflects and pushes it back on Will. But then almost instantly, he regrets it. Because it's in this moment he's only now realizing that Will did want to talk and missed him and is quite literally confused why they're not best friends any more. And suddenly it's all clicking. He knows deep down Will has every reason to be insecure, to not reach out to Mike after what happened last summer. It's just that he also thought Will had every right to move on because why wouldn't he, what's so great about Mike? Will could have anyone? Mike was so distracted by his own insecurities that Will had inevitably moved on, while also trying to hide his feelings, that he didn't realize Will actually did miss him. They've both got it all wrong.
As of now, we don’t know for sure if Will called at all, and so me assuming he called first, is just that, an assumption. But I’m giving Will the benefit of the doubt here. (It's also likely the Byers would have called the Wheeler's first because they know their number by heart most likely, while the Wheelers would've had to wait to get their new number).
Based on the story presented though (Will's unreliable narrator POV), he had a lot more reason to doubt Mike wanted anything to do with him. Will literally spent all of s3 fighting for their friendship, even if it meant coming off as slightly clingy and annoying and ‘childish’. And look how that turned out?
What else was Will to do in this situation? Just repeat all of his behavior in s4?
Was he just supposed to call Mike first, write him letters first, even though Mike was showing repeat signs of wanting to distance himself from him again?
And so, Will waits. He waits for Mike to make the next move, just in case his insecurities are right and that Mike doesn't want them to be best friends like they used to be.
One evening, about a month since the move, the phone rings and Will answers it. It's Mike.
Will is obviously surprised and thrilled. They talk for a bit, and yeah it's awkward. But still, it gives Will hope.
Now, it's still not enough to give Will the confidence to reach out first, fearing he'll come off too strong and scare Mike away again, and so he continues to give Mike space. But that doesn't stop this gesture from giving Will the inspiration to try one more thing, one last ditch effort to save their friendship; he's going to make Mike a painting.
So, all while watching El receive a new letter in the mail every few weeks or so, with him and Mike talking once (or if he's lucky maybe twice) a month over the phone, Will spends his time working on the painting, knowing that Mike used to appreciate his drawings when their friendship was at its strongest. And so, maybe this will be the thing that finally fixes things for them once and for all?
All too soon, it's Spring break and they're at the airport waiting for Mike to land.
In the months leading up to their reunion, Will made sure no one saw the painting he was working on, least of all El. Not even because he was scared she might figure out his feelings, but because he wanted it to be a surprise. We also know Will presumably had no problem with the others seeing the painting eventually because he literally brought it to the airport for Mike to open in front of all of them? And so... to him this was clearly an attempt at platonic reconciliation, even despite Will having romantic feelings for Mike. What he wanted was their friendship back.
But suddenly, Mike is standing before him and Will is so excited he can't hold back anymore. I mean, he's been holding back for MONTHS and he just wants to hug his best friend.
But then Mike is being awkward again, almost like he doesn't want to even touch Will at all, contrasting greatly from the last time they hugged during their goodbye only just a year ago (6 months they're so dramatic, i swear).
All this does is prove to Will that, despite them apparently ending on good terms, it seems Mike is just repeating last summer all over again.
Understandably, Will jumps to this conclusion fairly quickly, as his insecurities are being proven right in real time. Mike doesn't want the friendship they used to have. He doesn't want to hug, doesn't want to write to him, barely even called despite writing El a book worth of letters. He wants to talk to and focus on his girlfriend and Will is just an afterthought now.
There's no way he's gonna want this? A painting? Not a chance in hell.
So when Mike points to it and asks him about it nervously, Will panics and brushes it off.
How could he be so naive. Mike is making it SUPER clear he doesn't care about him, not like he used to. And still he's holding onto some misguided hope that maybe there's still a chance for them to be best friends.
How could he be so stupid.

Hello. I came across one of your posts about Vecna!Mike and saw the reblog about Lucas being Kas. My first thought when I saw that was how Lucas had a line earlier on in season 1 about “blinding” “whoever’s out there”(referring to who took Will) with his wrist rocket. And kas ends up taking vecna’s eye…
Hi! Yes, this is definitely something that I’d thoughts about when we were talking about that.
It really is very interesting, because that’s clearly setting something up, but the UD monsters don’t have eyes (that’s a pretty big thing), and the one major shot Lucas does manage to get off SEEMS to fulfill this, but then the camera pans and we see that it is really El who is handling things.
It’s possible that this is referencing Lucas eventually doing something against Henry (he seems to be half blinded right now, so losing the other eye would probably be quite damaging for him).
But! I would point out that IF you are willing to consider the idea of Vecna!Mike, then I hypothesize that, in that context, El functions as the Hand of Vecna and Will as the Eye of Vecna. And you COULD definitely make an argument that Lucas, all through s1 is a major driving force in Mike coming to view his relationship/dynamic with El in a romantic light. This dynamic somewhat continues in s3, with Lucas talking Mike through every hiccup in his relationship with El (and he’s the one there with Mike, equally dismissive of Will’s campaign, which leads to the rain fight). Then in s4, we get the subtle implication that there is still a level of heteronormativity which Mike is feeling from Lucas (note: the fact that this is how Mike experiences all of this should NOT be taken as a suggestion that I believe Lucas actually is homophobic, because I don’t believe that at all), such as when Mike is all good to argue about playing dnd rather than basketball… basically up until Lucas makes the comment about wanting girls to not laugh at him (ie. wanting them to find him potentially attractive/to have a hypothetical shot with them— he’s broken up with Max and, even if he wasn’t, being actually derided as a romantic option by the demographic of people you are attracted to isn’t FUN). All of which is to say, IF you consider Vecna!Mike, and you think of Will as the Eye of Vecna, you COULD make an argument in the case of Kas!Lucas that he HAS been “blinding” Mike all along by (inadvertently) pushing heteronormativity onto him.
It’s possible that @madwheelerz may have something else to add? I remember a comment about Lucas and right hand/side imagery to do with Mike, at one point?

the wonderful @laozuspo inspired me to make a post about my thoughts regarding stranger things characters + supertramp songs and I have a lot of thoughts, so here we are!
1.) “long way home,” as a Mike song about his failing relationship with El + inability to express himself and be dramatic doing things like dnd around her (especially with the romeo line and how melvin is often compared to romeo and juliet)
Tumblr media
and how will is “home,” to him, and even though it took a long time/he took the long way there, he got there in the end.
“oh, it’s peculiar, she used to be so nice,” mike and el and Mike thinking about how el used to be ‘nicer’/their relationship was easier early on but that was before she had a proper sense of independence + understanding of relationships
“does it feel like your life’s become a catastrophe? well it has to be, for you to grow, boy” this is so Mike coded. his conflicts with will, especially the inevitable painting fight, are going to lead to the growth of his and Will’s relationship in the end, and as a character, Mike has to go through all of these interpersonal catastrophes (especially in his relationships with both will and el) in order to grow.
“oh what you might have been, if you would have more time,” Mike running late in all of the reasons/running out of time, especially in s5 and how he feels like it’s too late for him and will because in s3 he associates his love for will with childish things and feels like has to grow out of it.
2.) “don’t leave me now” as a byler song, espeically a rain fight/Mike depressed in the summer before s4 song
Tumblr media
but also as a Mike pov s5 byler fight during the apocalypse song
3.) “waiting so long,” as a will pov song during s3 and parts of s4 regarding his and mike’s relationship and growing up and Mike not being aware of/blind to Will’s feelings for him.
Tumblr media
Also ties into Will feeling as if he’s been left behind by Mike and how he wants Mike to remember their friendship + all of their memories together.
4.) “just a normal day,” this is the mike wheeler depression pre-s4 song. just like how “just another day,” by oingo boingo foreshadows things for will in s2, “just a normal day,’ parallels that via title but also about foreshadowing apathy and inaction as unusual events for mike rather than the strange things that happen to will in s2.
Tumblr media
especially about how mike’s struggling to understand/convey his feelings and figure out why he’s so broken about will moving away. and how things should be normal but they don’t feel like it because will, unknowingly, was Mike’s source of normalcy. And will having “strange things on his mind,” that being Mike thinking about how Will’s thinking about whatever girl he seemingly made a painting for (according to el’s letter), especially since Will’s never expressed interest in girls before. 5.) “casual conversations” as a mike pov towards his relationship with el + how he feels inferior to her and like he not only can’t be vulnerable with her, but also feels like can’t even be himself around her. and how he knows deep down that it’s not just el’s fault but part of him wants to blame her for it because otherwise that means acknowledging that there’s something up with him, that there’s some deeper issues/feelings (for will) within himself that are playing a role in the incompatibility/conflict between him and El.
Tumblr media
Plus, Mike secretly being glad that his and el’s relationship is falling apart/they’re seemingly breaking up with El’s “from, El,” letter in s4.
6.) “an awful thing to waste” as a song about mike and his choice between living a nuclear family life in a miserable relationship like his parents versus making his own choices and admitting his feelings for will and how mike’s able to have the life that he actually wants, but he keeps getting in his own way because he believes it’s not possible/that will doesn’t reciprocate his feelings.
Tumblr media
and also about how Mike feels during s3 as if his feelings for will are too tied to childhood/nostalgia and he can’t figure out how to move forward thinking that his feelings are unreciprocated because they can’t be kids forever, but Mike also doesn’t want to grow up because that, in Mike’s mind, means a future where will grows up + gets into a relationship with someone else too. And how Mike’s started hiding from his problems (from Will) in the time prior to s4/during s4 despite previously being the one to problem solve and face challenges head-on, and that he’s destroying himself in the process of trying to hide.
7.) “where i stand with you,” as a will pov song towards mike especially pre-s4 and how he can’t seem to figure out how he fits into mike’s life since mike used to be more affectionate with him/like s1 or s2 will may have still had hope that his love was requited but is now pulling away past the point of even purely platonic affection (see: airport hug) and how will, even though he thinks the feelings are unrequited, just wants to know where he stands with mike. just wants to know if they’re still friends, if they can still be in eachother’s lives.

hey! this is the byler chicken anon, @swashbuckling-chicken and i'm here to ask you when you started shipping byler
Hello!! I've been watching each season as they've come out since 2016 (very much as a GA viewer, a deeply invested GA viewer, but not shipping or looking at much online regarding the show) and I only became aware of Byler as a ship after s3. I saw a few tumblr posts, looked into it for like 15 minutes, wasn't really convinced, and moved on. I was hoping that the show would follow through on the strong hints that Will is gay, I'd had that on my radar since the Snowball, and then even more so from the rain fight, but I hadn't really thought Will had feelings for Mike or that Mike was even in the realm of having feelings for Will. I could maaaybe see something from Will from the s3 finale, but I just didn't spend enough time looking into any of the subtext to see anything there. I did think Mike and El's relationship had taken a weird turn in s3 though, especially their goodbye and Mike's reaction to El's kiss in the finale.
In the lead up to s4 with the trailers, I got hyped about Will having an Alan Turing poster and was super excited about seeing more screentime for Will's character and him coming out. Again, Mike was not on my radar as a love interest. I saw some people speculating that the guy in the pink jacket from the trailer could be a love interest for Will as the camera focused on him a bit (more than usual for an extra in a trailer I guess), and I kept an eye out for him in 4x01.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then I watched all of vol 1 and I had an "oh" moment at the airport, my eyebrows were raised when Will said "what about us" at Rink o Mania, and my mouth was hanging open at the "cool, cool" talk in 4x04. At that point, I was invested in Will getting a happy ending in whatever way, shape, or form that he wanted, and I didn't know what was going on with Mike, but I knew that Will could not, under any circumstances, have his heart crushed, like that was just not acceptable to me. To me on my first watch through, Mike seemed like he was acting homophobic and I also couldn't accept that as a turn in his character or Will being on the receiving end of any homophobia from him. It just didn't compute in my head.
So I went on tumblr and started looking for posts. It was just a couple days after vol 1 had come out, so there was a lot to wade through and I wasn't sure what to think until I came across a game changing post for me that talked about the Upside Down being a metaphor for the closet and "Stranger Things" only being there as the title to refer to two boys dating in the 80s (I have no idea where it went unfortunately, or who posted it). I may have shed a tear thinking that a beloved show may have had such important queer subtext this entire time and was working towards a slow burn queer ending, and did a deep dive. I was on the tag and hyperfixated by like May 30th or so, when the tag was still at like 7k or 8k.

Hello I love your writing! Most of all the Mando storys! Will you write more for him soon? Did you like season 3?
Hello and thank you, dear anon! I'm always thrilled to hear from people who like my writing, and Din is particularly near and dear to my heart! 🥰🥰 I have a handful of WIPs with him already (and a train car full of ideas that I'd love to write someday). There is one in particular that I've been polishing up a bit in hopes of getting it posted someday soon, BUT I don't want to promise anything because I am notoriously bad at sticking to any sort of deadlines or timeline as far as writing/posting goes (especially when my real life gets busy like it is right now) 😅🙈
As for season 3, I finally watched it a couple of weeks ago, and... (Mando s3 spoilers below the cut)
First of all, let me just emphasize that this is my opinion and my opinion ONLY. It's not my intention to rain on anyone's parade, nor do I want to argue with anyone about it.
So... if you loved season 3, that's great! And I love that for you!! I know some people who were delighted by it, and I'm happy for them, but sadly, that was not my experience.
In general, I found that I needed to... hmm, let's say... adjust my expectations somewhat to be able to enjoy the season 3? I think mostly because I loved s1 & s2 so much, and it seemed like these most recent episodes never quite lived up to the same level for me.
Basically, there were a lot of places where I felt like the plot, dialog, and/or characterization could have been tightened up or handled differently to better effect. I often felt like cohesive storytelling (and/or in-universe physics—hello, 30 second trip to the core and back, I'm looking at you) took a backseat to checking off plot points, and the chance for greater emotional engagement was ignored in favor of video-game-style high-speed chases and/or fights, which like..... yeah, those sequences were cool and all, but I never really felt all that invested in the outcome because it seemed like the show skipped over the groundwork needed to.... make me care?
Ironically, the bit of storytelling that I found most interesting and did emotionally connect with was the part of ch 19 focusing on the "rehabilitation" of Dr Penn Perishing and other Imperials, which……… turned out to be just a way to snip that particular loose end and lead us back to Moff Gideon. And really, there seemed to be a lot of shoehorning in bits of the wider Star Wars universe, often in ways that placed the emphasis on that to the detriment of... the rest of the show. (A bit like they were so excited to show us the forest, to the point that they forgot we also wanted to see the individual trees, perhaps?)
Eventually, I did realized that part of the reason events felt so random was that I was expecting more of Din's story, but that's not what Season 3 is anymore. It's Bo Katan's story, with Din and Grogu along for the ride. (Sort of the reverse of what happened with tBoBF, I think, and I found it equally awkward there.) Once I resigned myself to the fact that I was watching The Bo Katan Show, some of the storytelling choices made a bit more sense, and I do like s3 marginally better when viewed through the lens.
TLDR (because that got really freakin' long--sorry, anon 😅) I liked season 3 okay, but I felt it could have been handled better, and I wish the focus had stayed on Din and Grogu's story because that's what I'm most interested in.
Like... C'mon, Favreau, where's The Mandalorian, Supplemental Chapters: The Further Adventures of our Favorite Tin Can Space Man Dad Bounty Hunter and his Green Bean Son?!?!?

(otterverse recap, 2/3)
now it's time for my personal favorite season of the otterverse, season 2! if season 1 is where the joke became a bit, then season 2 is where the bit became a roleplay, and also the last season where the tumblr inbox itself is referenced as part of the plot/world they live in.
it starts, as many things do, in a wendy's. c!otter (she/they/rain/star/paw, played by @leonardoturtle) is vibing, until a bunch of eldritch fellas and other weirdos essentially show up to start bothering paw.
notable here are lung anon, blood anon, tin star anon, and raccoon anon (i believe they were all played by the one the only @donatelloturtle, all they/them since anons), who are. actually i dont remember much abt tin star and raccoon other than they were in gay love but blood and lung anons? yeah those guys were on some tma shit. also, there was pedant anon (played by me, they/them, kind of an asshole but had some funny moments), wendy's employees #1 and 2 (different anons, one played by me and the other by @wallace-marte), a few failed ARG anons that never quite got off the ground, and pink text anon (played by @wisp-exe). out of these, lung anon, pink text anon, and the wendy's employees are the most important, despite what pedant anon would have you think, with lung and blood especially aiming for the annihilation of the world and all of reality (the other anons all made fun of them for it).
for a while, it's just a lot of ominous muttering and vague joke-making, as we the rpers try to get something fun off the ground (we didn't really start properly communicating behind the scenes until mid-s3)- and then in rolls pink text anon, the bitch-ass motherfucker themself. they taunt and threaten every otterverse participant i know of- even me. (this was the birth of c!gumy, btw! she used she/xe and will be important later!)
c!otter gets attacked by an apocalyptic eldritch flesh creature (later retconned to be a tbh creature), and harbinger anon (played by @harbinger-anon, whose main i can't remember) saves star by destroying the messenger.
pink text anon! introduces themself to otter as rains "guide," and starts pushing star to do things and "follow their lead," ominously and vaguely talking about the end of days and whatnot. what really makes them different is that they go into other ppl's askboxes and pull them into their story- namely, me and felix (cc!felix, to be clear. we all are/were mcyt fans we use c! and cc! a lot bc all of our characters have/had the same names as us lmao). pink text told felix to "protect the sea" and me (c!gumy) to "trick the sea". c!gumy resented being manipulated, and vowed to hunt down and reveal pink text anon.
sadly, c!gumy never got the chance, because less than an hour later pink text tricked c!otter into pulling a lever that brought about the apocalypse that lung and blood anons were talking about. tbh creatures appeared Everywhere, and the RP part of this story really kicked into high gear. pink text also revealed themself to be c!wisp (y'know, that guy! you remember disc!), and gave a whole villain monologue abt being wronged and getting revenge and stuff.
c!gumy... did NOT take this well. she kinda did a triple cannonball backflip into the deep end and swore revenge against c!wisp. u know how it is.
however, after the initial moment of panic- c!wisp seemed repentant, at least somewhat, and guided c!otter to pull the lever again and possibly end the annihilation.
so, the group heads back towards the lever, all while being attacked by monstrous tbh beasts. several characters die at this point (pedant dies offscreen lmao what an L), most importantly c!gumy (tackled c!wisp to the ground and got them both mauled), c!wisp (who lasted long enough after that to fight off one more beast, and also got hit in the head by a pebble thrown by c!gumy in xir final moments), and c!otter, who sacrificed herself for c!felix, dying in front of xem.
the apocalypse was stopped, but the damage is done- the old world is gone, and while there aren't any more new monsters coming in, there's still thousands roaming the streets. even so, there's still hope, as the wendy's employees (who have at this point fallen in gay love) have survived the carnage and start working to build a new future for themselves. their names are daisy cabiosas (they/them, played by me), and carmin aloys (he/him, played by wali), and since they wanted to unionize back when capitalism was a problem, their new settlement is called Union.
and that's otterverse season 2!

I think it's interesting how we never really see Will's life from his own perspective? The only times I can really think of off of the top of my head are when he's destroying Castle Byers in season 3 (a scene in which his anger and hurt override any rational emotions) and some of the scenes in season 4 when he's talking to Mike about "El" (he's obviously talking about himself in these scenes, but there's still this sense of detachment because he's making it seem like he's talking about El, so even though he's talking about his own thoughts and feelings, he's still not really talking about himself?)
Like, he's trapped in the Upside Down for the majority of season 1 so we only really learn about him from Joyce talking to Hopper and Jonathan's flashbacks. Tbh I can't really remember the rest of the party talking about Will that much, just about how to find him. We also learn that the mean kids in school used to bully him for being gay, and we learn that Lonnie cared so little about him that he didn't care when he went missing for a week and was presumed dead. The only time in s1 that we really see him on his own is at the very end when he vomits up the slug and sees the Upside Down again, an event which he hides completely from his family and friends.
Then in s2, sure, he's there, but he's basically possessed for half the season! The only things he himself expresses are that he's scared of the Mind Flayer and that he feels comfortable around Bob. He spends the whole season hiding his feelings and fears until it's too late and he's been completely taken over by the Mind Flayer. Then we hear some of Joyce's, Jonathan's and Mike's memories of Will and about how much they care about him, but once again, we never hear him talking about his own life or about how he feels about anything that's going on. At the Snow Ball at the end of the season we can see that Lucas is happily dancing with Max, Mike with El, and Dustin with Nancy, but then Will's just with some random girl that we never even see again? It was kind of clear that he wanted to stay with Mike instead of dancing with the girl, but even when he does dance with her it's pretty unclear how he felt about it? Like, was he happy? Sad? Uncomfortable? I guess we'll never know!
In s3 he tries to express himself, only to be repeatedly brushed off by his friends again and again, leading to him destroying Castle Byers in a moment of unfiltered emotion. It's important to remember that in the first two seasons while all the other Party members were busy, well, saving Will, Will himself was fighting for his life, and thus he missed out on a huge chunk of his childhood, which is why in s3 he wants them to play dnd again like they used to, because he hasn't really moved on from when they were 12 years old playing dnd in Mike's basement, before all his friends started ignoring him to hang out with their girlfriends. I think the rain fight scene (and subsequently the Castle Byers scene) is maybe the most open Will is about his feelings in the entire series. He's spent the whole season trying to get Mike and Lucas to act like they used to, something that the other two brushed off as him being childish and immature. He doesn't react very strongly to this, save for a few sighs and an eye roll here and there, until he storms out of Mike's house and shouts at him. It's only then that we truly realise how upset and angry he is, angry enough to destroy Castle Byers. But then.... we don't really see much more of him for the rest of the season?
And then of course, there's s4. As I said, we do actually hear him talk about himself quite a few times in s4, but he always uses El's name to once again hide his true feelings. There are a couple of other scenes from Will's perspective in this season, for example most of the Rink-O-Mania scenes, and we sometimes hear about what he thinks of Jonathan smoking weed, but there aren't really any other scenes in which he explicitly talks about himself.
Long story short, in seasons 1&2 he was only ever used as a plot device, not so much as an actual character, and I can't wait for him to get a proper arc, from his own perspective, in season 5!
