DRAMA REVIEW | Blossoms in Adversity (2024)
Tumblr media
I was in the mood for a historical romance story and Blossoms in Adversity seemed like a good idea since it features some of the actors I like. I was pleasantly surprised by this drama. I really thought it was going to be yet another run of the mill romance but what I found was so much more.
The story it's not about romance per se, that's a side story, the main plot of Blossoms in Adversity it's a family torn apart when their patriarch crosses the Emperor in the wrong way (for the right reasons). As a consequence the men, including the children, are exiled to the north and the women, find themselves without the family's fortune and no men to support them. So, out of necessity, they create a matriarchy and end up finding agency of their own for the first time ever with incredible results as they slowly rethink the "rules" they have been living by so far. Slowly, each women starts to show their true self, their personal interests and strong characteristics, they start business, struggle and succeed, the road it's never easy but their bond it's stronger.
I will be honest, you will have to push through at first. There’s some catty behaviour but it’s important to understand that most of these females characters never thought they would be anything other than brides or mothers, as set for the society, but these women prove to be mature and sensible enough to hold proper conversations with each other and realize why they need to work together.
The male lead's story it's also very interesting and it complements well the main characters but I found the women's story far more compelling. This drama is very uplifting and consistent in its characters's development, never betraying them.
I recommend it!

wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits” for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌
Tumblr media
now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.
then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.
here is the song if you wanna listen to it. 🎶
youtube
turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.
however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.
SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. Or is this like the gaming cpn where certain people know and they will not divulge the boy’s account for privacy? if anyone knows, feel free to comment. If i find out in the future, I will share.

Hi! i saw your thread on twitter about Chinese culture concerning danmei in spain. You mentioned that Chinese names often follow some sort of theme and usually have 1 or two characters per name, so I wanted to ask you if there was anything else to naming customs in China?
I’m trying to create a name for a character I have and I want it to be authentic as possible :,)) sorry if this is too much to ask!! <3
Hello! Hope you're having a lovely day!
There can be a lot of art in something as simple as a name in Chinese-- my knowledge is not exhaustive but I'm happy to talk about and share as much as I can!
Chinese names usually go by a 1 or 2 word surname, followed by a 1 or 2 word first name. Depending on the region, some minority groups may have names longer than that too (e.g. 迪丽热巴 迪力木拉提 Dilraba Dilmurat, 库都斯江·艾尼娃尔 Kudusjan Anivar) but we won’t talk about that.
Surnames:
Usually 1 or 2 characters long
The Top 20 most common single word Chinese surnames in mainland China (in order):
Wang, Li, Zhang, Liu, Chen, Yang, Huang, Sun, Zhao, Wu, Zhou, Xu, Ma, Zhu, Hu, Guo, He, Gao, Luo, Lin
The Top 7 most common multiple word Chinese surnames in mainland China (in order):
Ouyang, Shangguan, Huangfu, Linghu, Zhuge, Situ, Sima
Each surname has history behind it.
E.g. 王 Wang was actually the title used to refer to members of the royal family in ancient Chinese history. This includes calling the King "王" during the 3 kingdoms era, or calling a lord/prince "王爷" during the Qing dynasty for example. Therefore, the surname 王 was historically reserved for those in power and families of high social status.
E.g. two-word names potentially came from court titles
Naming customs include:
siblings having similar/matching names-- names of siblings or close relatives can be put together to achieve a deeper level of meaning. Sometimes even the names of family members through generations could be matching or similar, like with only 1 character difference
naming based on family symbols/motifs-- this refers to names associated with the town or birthplace, etc.
naming with particular meaning-- this is often derived from literature or poetry, the latter being a huge inspiration for names. Names can also describe the person's personality
Gendered names:
They do exist in Chinese. Certain characters with associated meanings may have gender connotations associated with them
It's all very stereotypical, but most commonly names with "feminine" words such as 美 (mei = beauty), 花 (hua = flower), 婷 (ting = gracefulness) are used for females, while "masculine" words like 力 (li = strength), 俊 (jun = handsome), 宏 (hong = grand) are used for males
Non-gendered/unisex names exist too. Words such as 明 (ming = bright),雨 (yu = rain),云 (yun = cloud),南 (nan = South),嘉 (jia = good, delightful) can sound unisex
Aside from this, also keep in mind:
The sound of the name plays a very significant role. A good name needs to flow when said aloud and have a nice ring to it.
A lot of names might sound "old fashioned" or "outdated"
Many Chinese words have the same pronunciation but different meanings, so it's important to make sure the name doesn't accidentally end up sounding like something it's not supposed to sound like e.g. 梅潜 (mei qian = pronounced the same as 没钱 which means no money)
I am currently writing a document detailing more cultural aspects including naming conventions, place names, customs and traditions, brief folklore and genres of Chinese fiction-- I go into a bit more detail in there. I'm gauging interest at the moment-- let me know if this would be of interest to you and I will endeavour to complete it sometime!!!
I hope this was helpful! Please feel free to ask me any more questions!

Till the end of the moon
Year : 2023 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 40
My rate: 9/10
Synopsis :
In an era when demons have dominion over cultivators and mortals, the cultivator elders believe it is imperative to send someone back in time to discover the origin of the demon lord and prevent his resurrection.
Li Su Su accepts the mission and assumes the identity of mortal Ye Xi Wu, the second daughter of General Ye. She's married to Tantai Jin, the captive prince and future demon lord, and is determined to destroy him, aware that in the future he will come to massacre many. But as witness to Tantai Jin's past life and rise to power, an unexpected tale emerges, one complicating her quest.
Main cast :
Luo Yun Xi as Tantai Jin/ Cang Jiu Min/ Ming Ye
Bai Lu as Li Su Su/ Ye Xi Wu/ Sang Jiu
Chen Du Ling as Ye Bing Chang/ Mo Nyu/ Tian Huan
Deng Wei as Xiao Lin/ Gonye Jiwu/ Sang You
Sun Zhen Ni as Pian Ran
Eddy Geng as Ye Qing Yu
Li Jia Hao as Nian Bai Yu
My thoughts on this drama :
It it rated 9/10 because of the frustration…. At the Chinese governement's sh*tty censorship, again! They had to cut so many scenes (important ones) for it to be allowed to air, that we ended up with some extremely cluncky episodes toward the end of the show. Otherwise, this is a bit fat 10/10! I followed it upon release, each day, for weeks, with monstrous cliffhangers and all! It is close to perfection. The cast, the costumes, the music, the scenery, the special effects, the story, the acting, EVERYTHING! It has it all: smiles and tears, laughter and anger, life and death, love and tragedy.... It had been so long since I was that taken by a series. I can only recommend it 1000%, this drama has become a real reference for the Xianxia genre.

Completed 'Surname' Polls
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
This post is for the polls which have finished running and can no longer be voted in (since I have realised that I'm quickly approaching the limit for hyperlinks in the original masterlist).
If you want to see the currently live polls, they can be found here
Finished polls: Cao/Wei/Guo/Chen/Ye/Qiao/Yu/Xue/Tang/Jiang/Su/Gao/Mei/Lin/Wu/Sun/Liu/Di/Zhang/Ying/Mo/Li/Song/Yan/Xiao/Pei/Hua/Xie/Mu/Qi/Shen/Lan/Fang/Luo /Huo/Xu/Wang/Ming/Fan/Yuan/Feng/Bai/Jin/Meng/Yun/Zhao/Wen/Zhou/Yang/Shang/Yue/Sheng/Ouyang/Lu/Ling/Hu/Gu/Ding

Unsurprisingly, Rongzhi got me in a chokehold, and while I'm not even there yet (on ep37 now), I've seen the spoilers.
Listen, my mind is trying to preemptively make sense of what's going to happen, and so I wrote this little ficlet.
If you want to do it better than me and avoid major spoilers, don't read further.
This might or might not fit what actually happens as I watch on. Maybe it will, and I'll clean it up and post it properly later on.
For now I'm very intrigued by the possibility of a scheme behind a scheme behind a scheme, the love language of betrayal (hello, zhaoxie fam!) and the ultimate devotion of willingly making oneself a pawn without expecting anything in return (looking at you there, suyao lovers!).
--- in his rightful place ---
The sword lies firmly against Wang Zhi's throat. Ding Rong keeps telling himself that this is what he wanted. This is what has to happen. It has become inevitable that someone will make their final move to bring Wang Zhi down, and he will not have anyone else do it. He can't trust anyone else with this precious, vulnerable neck.
And so he can keep his hand completely steady as he steps back towards Shang Ming, keeps his eyes levelled and sharp when Wang Zhi's gaze locks on his. He watches the well hidden emotions pass across his du-gong's face. How well he has learned to read him over the years. He can see his surprise, anger, fear, where another won't even notice a muscle's twitch.
Do the same for me now, he thinks, read me the way I read you. Show me that you watched me the way I have been watching you. Show me you understand me after all these years.
There is a shift in Wang Zhi's eyes, a slight widening of his pupils. It is not what Ding Rong has hoped for. Where he wanted to find confirmation, there is a heart that quietly breaks.
But he has to keep it up now. Shang Ming is speaking, and Ding Rong does what he knows to do best, remains silent and focused on the task, on Wang Zhi. He thinks he can feel his rapid pulse travel through the blade to his hand. But no, that's impossible. Ding Rong forces his mind away from his emotions. He has always known this could happen. That Wang Zhi might not understand him right away. It is not lost yet.
—-
It had to be Ding Rong, not just any stranger. That way Wang Zhi has a chance to outsmart him. Doesn't Wang Zhi know him best? Ding Rong couldn't make it easy for him, of course, or his scheme would be exposed. But surely Wang Zhi understands him well enough to know how to bring him down.
Or so Ding Rong has thought, until now, until there is a familiar body in red on the floor, and Shang Ming is holding a painful speech about...
Ding Rong has stopped hearing him. It can't be, he tells himself over and over, as he stands frozen. Wang Zhi is better than that. He would not simply die like that. He can't die. Not yet. Not in front of him.
The rushing of his blood inside his ears makes it hard to hear his own thoughts, and while he desperately tries to understand the failure in his plan, a single tear breaks free and runs down his cheek, betraying the trust he had in Wang Zhi.
—-
There is a knife pushing against Ding Rong's throat, and he is glad that it is Jia Kui's. He knows Jia Kui won't act rashly or cruelly, and he is less ashamed if it is him who notices him quivering when Wang Zhi pushes back the hood that has been hiding his face. He falls to his knees and the world is right again, and while his heart pumps joy and panic through his body, his mind is calm at last.
He is relieved from the burden that has been weighing heavily on his shoulders when he is put in shackles and behind bars. He has no thoughts to spare for the countless people he has seen in the very same position, what he has done to them, what might be done to him.
What will come now doesn't matter anymore. Wang Zhi is finally back in his righteous position, and Ding Rong has fulfilled his service to him.
After all, Ding Rong thinks, and there is a content warmth spreading inside his chest, he might not have been so wrong in trusting how well Wang Zhi knows him. Maybe he has truly seen him all along.
