Ri'gastio! I may feel bad about all the killing he does, but he never has. A former slave turned bounty hunter with a deep hatred for pretty much everyone except for pretty women who could kill him, his defining character traits are the desire to piss everyone off and his tendency to kill people he should probably have kept alive. We're talking about a guy who gets along with Skadge.

So Rig's name is not an accurate Chiss name really, and this is both on purpose and because I: do not understand Chiss naming. If you do, please save me. Anyway he's just faking it til he makes it as far as being Chiss goes, having grown up completely separate from that culture as a slave in the Empire. There is one person in the galaxy he completely trusts, or would actually do something nice for with no ulterior motive, and that's his fellow ex-slave Exchei. Of course, he appreciates that she ends up on the Dark Council and therefore he can trust that she'll always have a job for him, but once upon a time they were two fucked up kids relying on each other to get through an awful situation.

After the slave transport ship he was on got hijacked and the slaves released, he decided to set himself up as a bounty hunter for two reasons: killing with impunity sounded like a fun time and a way to get out his anger at the world, and if he got good enough the Empire would rely on him in a way that means he can actually choose to deny them services if he wants to. Secretly desperate to feel like he belongs someplace, instead of actually pursuing a positive relationship he belittles the people he thinks have rejected him or would reject him - the Empire, Mandalorians, the Chiss - and ignores any overtures of friendship. His crew he keeps around because he feels like he has control of them, and that's as close to a family as he feels safe having.

His relationship with Exchei starts to fall apart as she finds people she cares for elsewhere, and after Zakuul comes onto the scene he starts taking jobs for them - they can pay, after all, and to him that's all that matters. This does not make Exchei terribly happy, as she sees them as the Enemy. Though they still occasionally slip into bed together when they meet up and she still will hire him if she needs a bounty hunter, their relationship never recovers from figuring out how fundamental their differences in morality are.

#one of the other things that annoys me about soulmate stories and not-canon-rooted aus in general is the way so many of them discount the #idea that two people can be perfect for each other at one point in their lives but an extremely bad match at another point. #sometimes you grow into people who would be good for each other and sometimes you grow apart #and i think it's an important part of understanding a character to understand how they got from point A to point B and what makes up a #'core' of their character and how they've changed as a result. i refuse to believe that you all Want to believe that people are static #'souls' from birth to the grave. #''if these two characters had just met earlier they would have been the perfect team and half the plot would never have happened'' #if those two characters had met as teens/younger adults they would have torn each other to pieces because they lacked the perspective given #to them by the life experiences they had as individuals. #''if only this person had confessed their feelings at this point in the plot everything would be fixed'' #the reason they did not do that is because of who they are as a character and this experience and regret is what pushes them to #pursue a relationship more earnestly later in the plot #''these two would have been best friends as kids!'' #again if you read the portions where they were respectively children you can imagine that actually they would have publicly #uninvited the other one from their 'bff only' birthday parties #'these two characters were perfect for each other in [flashback arc] why weren't they endgame' #because they grew into people who couldn't coexist without hurting each other and weren't willing to change those parts of themselves so #they split ways (violently) #all of this is in some ways subjective character interpretation and in others very obvious #but i came across another post today about how someone is frustrated that a couple 'didn't just meet sooner' #and with these two characters it's like. they genuinely would have killed each other. like they would have driven each other to kill themse #to delete #ein babbles #and another thing about people who get smug/mad at characters for being 'stupid' for what ultimately is 'not knowing that they are in a #[genre] story' is th [dragged away from the laptop and wrapped in several layers of blanket burrito where i suffocate to death]

One of the most frustrating and confusing parts of life is when I start to do something for closure and then realizing this closure may do more to harm me than heal me like I hoped it would.

#looking through my moms old school year books #reading all the messages her friends wrote her and learning more about her and her actual personality outside of being a mom #every day I wish I got to know her for real. I wish she could have been herself forever. I wish i could’ve really learned who she is #instead of reading past memos for someone who is now a shadow of a person #this hurts more than I thought it would #I just wanted to learn more about my mom #she had so many good friends and they had so many nice things to write in her year books #also a reminder that I never got to have school year books #I never got to have friends like this in my teenage years #a reminder of how lonely I was and how awful high school was for me #but I’m glad my mom had fun back then #I’m sure she misses these friends sometimes #and I’m sure they miss her #I wonder if they’ve ever tried to get in contact with her and came up with static and wondered what happened to her #how many middle and high school reunions would my mom have been invited to if she actually got to live her life #this isn’t fair #this isn’t fair to anybody involved #I wish my mom was still here to tell me about all these people and stories
