i don’t know how to feel about this episode either.
the lack of horror elements this season is getting annoying to watch. season 1 was excellent at teasing what’s to come and uh there’s absolutely nothing going on in that department in season 2.
the jackie feast should have been gorey and fucked up but i was willing to excuse that because the baby was yet to be born and given the build up? i was absolutely expecting something out of this world and just awful to happen.
nothing against sophie and her acting because damn! she acted so very well but uh. i’m not sold off on the whole shauna wanted the baby thing. that dream sequence was unsettling but it was weird because when has shauna shown an ounce of love to this kids prior to the birth?
this baby is what doomed her relationship with jackie right? maybe the upcoming episodes will deal with this but uh. the resentment i’d expect from shauna to feel about this baby isn’t there. not in this season at least. which sucks but maybe i’m just reading the room wrong.
i really love this show and it’s character work because it’s excellent but uh, not a fan of the execution for one of its biggest plot lines
hmmm idk if i agree overall about the horror elements missing cause to me the jackie feast for example was genuinely unsettling disturbing upsetting and so on which happens ALMOST NEVER. i'm not a good judge of what's scary in general cause horror just doesn't scare me and rarely genuinely manages to disturb me. so for example with s1 i was actually SHOCKED to find out any of that was scary or disturbing to people. so in terms of how i'm personally affected.. well s2 hits much harder. and feels darker in general which is a fitting progression in my opinion. but because of that i really did think they'll go really dark with this pregnancy storyline and it's like they were too scared to? like even the fact that shauna's feelings regarding that baby confuse me aside it's like. why didn't we even see the dead baby? that's the show unafraid of gore in every other ep since the pilot COME THE FUCK ON whose sensibilities are you afraid of hurting

Hi darlings, I wanted to make you this special post because last month was my birthday. So I'm going to recommend 4 movies, 2 TV series and 7 books.
Films:
The Invisible Guest -The movie revolves around Adrian Dova telling the story of how he didn't murder his lover to his lawyer, but as the story unravels, it's revealed another crime that he could have committed. It's an amazing movie, the suspense of this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat along with the mystery of what happened to the mistress? Why was she there? And what does it have to do with the disappearance of a young man? A very good script, the direction is fascinating and the acting 100/10.
A Monster In Paris - This movie isn't the pique of animated movies, but it's pretty cute. We follow Emile, Raoul and Lucille who have to literally hide and save a monster that Emile and Raoul created by accident. What I like most about the movie is the music, the voices are so beautiful and angelic. The song from La Seine is top tier, and no one is going to change my opinion.
Bloody Hell - This movie is only for the gore suckers. I'm a person who can't stand supernatural scary movies, but you play me gorey-slash movies, I loved them. A man runs from his stormy past and ends up being kidnapped. Loved the gore and black humor they use in this movie, it's so chaotic and insane.
Penelope - One of my favorite rom-coms, the final message is so beautiful. Penelope is about a young woman who is born with a curse of having a pig's nose until someone from her social class agrees to marry her. The acting is great, and I love the aesthetic of the movie. Plus it has Christina Ricci, James McAvoy and Reese Witherspoon, couldn't ask for more.
Series:
Ugly Betty - Ok, read on, just read what I have to say about this soap opera. First, Ugly Betty tells the story of Beatriz Pinzón upon entering the fashion company, Ecomoda. She faces discrimination and harassment from her bosses, while she falls in love with the main boss. But she also tells the story of Armando Mendoza and how his fear of failure leads him to lose everything that matters to him. I understand that there are many soap operas that only seek to bring out drama and squeeze all the miscommunication that may exist, but this one has some good bases and an incredible script. HOWEVER, the show is fulled of misogyny, homophobia, transphobia and fat phobia. And before the defenders come with the IT WAS ANOTHER TIME! It's still misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic and fat phobic. The ending is disappointing, but I highly recommend this soap opera in terms of its story structure, character creation, and theme management.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend-The series follows Rebecca Bunch, a lawyer who is depressed and disappointed in her life, who meets Josh Chan, her ex-boyfriend, who encourages her to pursue her dreams and be happy. Which she interprets as following Josh to her hometown and looking for any way to be with him. The series works as a musical and also a satire, I love how the series develops like all the songs in the series.
Books:
Play - The first book in the Play trilogy follows the story of brothers Leo and Aaron. Leo has the dream of being famous and Aaron has the talent to become famous, both create a plan to fulfill Leo's dream and get Aaron back with his ex, what could go wrong? It is an easy book to read, and it was the first book I finished in one day. I am very fond of the trilogy, as it is the foundation of my love of reading.
The Reader - Wow, this book is strong. Here I am going to put a warning of pedophilia and the relationship between a minor and an adult. After the horrors of World War II, Germany and the young Michael Berg try to recover. Michael, especially, because he is entering puberty and he does it with the influence of one of his neighbors. The book does a time jump to the future with Michael as an adult and how he deals with the death of an influential person in his life. This story is strong, deep and raw. What grabs my attention is the way Michael deals with his childhood and how he see it affecting his life. It is a very interesting book but a heavy to read, read with precaution.
The four o'clock soap opera won't stop because someone managed to kill themselves. -This was my first approach to the author A. E. Quintero, and I have become a fan of his poetry. The author romanticizes the ordinary, and he makes you reevaluate your day to day. Highly recommended along with this other book, Countdown.
The Cruel Prince - Jude Duarte was seven years old when she saw her parents murder only to be kidnapped with her twin and older sister to the fairy kingdom. 10 years later, and all Jude wants is to be part of the court and prove once and for all that she deserves a place in that world. This is the first book in the Folks of the Air trilogy, and I am in love with the character of Jude. I would say that I am as in love as hers as her love interest, and I understand that one of the most attractive points of the trilogy is the love story, but for me is Jude. She is such a complicated, charismatic and amazing character that she is an excellent guide to this world of betrayal and hypocrisy.
The House in The Cerulean Sea - Linus Baker is in charge of supervising and reporting to the government on the quality of the orphanages that he visits, what he prioritizes is that they take care of the magical childhoods that inhabit these orphanages. He considers himself an excellent official until he gets the case of the house in the Cerulean Sea. After this visit, he questions everything he has done and what he should do for the good of all. This book is beautiful and you feel bad, read it. It has so much care and love put into the writing and the characters, I love it.
Anne Without Filters - Anne Shirley is excited to start college life and her writing career, she already has experience being one of the most popular fan fiction writers. Until one Gilbert passes her by and sends her into second place, it doesn't help that he's her new classmate. Even her best friend, Diana, thinks it's a good idea that she reached out to the writer. But with each day, meeting, and experiences only leaves Anne confused about who she wants, hates, and must let go. I love this novel, it's just as adorable as the previous one, but I feel that this is more like coming of age and doesn't complicate the love relationship, it just lets the consequences of the characters' personalities happen. What I mean (and I can't emphasize this more) many romance stories prefer to add external problems and pretend that they are internal. Not in this book, here the characters learn and grow from their mistakes.
Erebos - This book is very recent reading, but it is a very good vehicle to get into science fiction. Something weird is going on at Nick's school, and one afternoon he finds out that it's all because of the video game, Erebos. At first, it seems like a fun and somewhat mysterious game, but soon all the players get involved in something bigger than themselves, so big that they refuse to tell another person what's going on. I really liked the narrative and the world that Ursula builds for the book, they are very well done, and it works so well to tell this story of addiction and the desire to belong.
With this I finish my recommendations, I hope you like them, and you can tell me about others that you liked.
P.S.
I want to add my favorite song: Notion by The Rare Occasion.

My Webtoon Recommendations
These are webtoons that are all 10/10 for me. Of course it doesn’t have to be a 10/10 for you, so just a reminder, do not attack me for liking a webtoon that you do not. These are my opinions and we are not going to have the exact same taste. Please be respectful.
Your Throne
Tumblr media
Genre: Fantasy
Chapters: 75
Status: Ongoing
-
“Tensions are brewing under the seemingly calm surface of the Vasilios Empire, a kingdom ruled by the Imperial Family and the Temple. Lady Medea Solon has lost her place next to Crown Prince Eros, but resolves to win back whats rightfully hers. Will she reclaim her throne?”
You know whats amazing about this webtoon? The summary leads you to think that what shes winning back is the prince. Wrong. Shes trying to win back the throne. I love how this webtoon doesn’t try to make it a girl focusing her goals on a man, but on power. Medea is such a strong and well written character that you can’t help but love her.
The second protagonist Pschye, who of which is the person who took Medeas place as Crown Princess, is the complete opposite of Medea. At the beginning you hate her, but as the webtoon goes on and Medea and her get a better understanding of eachother due to them switching bodies as a wish from God, you begin to root for them as they team up to take over the throne from the Crown Prince.
The art is so beautiful and I constantly found myself at awe from the amount of detail put into it.
-
The Makeup Remover
Tumblr media
Genre: Romace
Chapters: 78
Status: Ongoing
-
“After years of being told to focus on studying, Yeseul feels lost when she starts college and is suddenly expected to pay attention to makeup. When a chance encounter with brilliant makeup artist Yuseong leads to her taking part in a televised makeup competition, Yeseul begins to question the role that makeup and appearance play in society.”
This was created by one of my favorite webtoon creators Lee Yone. Their art is just so amazing and their stories always include such good topics.
For instance, The Makeup Remover’s theme is loving yourself for who you are. It shows how people treat you based on your looks and as someone whos struggled with that kind of thing for a while, this webtoon really touched me. The main character Yeseul is such a relatable character, even when trying to reject beauty standards, she still came subject to the pressures of living up to the people around her. She struggles with trying to love her own appearance and I really like that this webtoon didn’t try to be like, ‘fuck the beauty standard im better than that screw pretty people!!!’ it actually showed realistically how people struggle with self-image. I also love the main love interest because oh my god, we need more men like him please. He doesn’t care about Yeseul’s appearance and genuinely loves her for her personality.
Also, art is amazing. The author is so talented and you should support them by reading and liking the chapters.

Surviving Romance
Tumblr media
Genre: Horror
Chapters: 14
Status: Ongoing
-
“When Chaerin Eun becomes the protagonist of the romance novel she is reading, she expects a fairytale ending with the novel’s love interest, Jeha. But when a bizarre twist makes her realize the story is not playing out as it does in the book, she’ll need the help of an unlikely character from her class to defy the new storyline and find her happy ending - if only she can figure out who this ‘Unknown Extra’ is first!”
Hands down one of my favorite webtoons by a long shot. You ever see a webtoon and think, ‘oh yeah, thats going to be a good webtoon’? Thats how this webtoon was for me. It was so good that I spent hours searching for other chapters that hadn’t been uploaded to webtoon yet on other manhua websites. I discovered it because it was also by the author of ‘The Makeup Remover’.
If there is one thing you need to know about me, its that I am a huge horror fan. So when I saw that my favorite author on webtoon had a horror themed webtoon out? You bet your behind that I binged it. Let me tell you, best choice ever.
Think of it as if ‘Ino’s Law’ and ‘Quarantine’ were combined with amazing art and a badass MC.
The Remarried Empress
I love how it is set up to the point where she cannot ‘quit’ until she completes the novel. Creating scenarios where she must survive while meeting the standards in the book. It is such an amazingly written webtoon and I cannot wait for more chapters to be released.
-
Tumblr media
Genre: Fantasy
Chapters: 82
Status: Ongoing
-
“Navier Ellie Trovi was an empress perfect in every way - intelligent, courageous, and socially adept. She was kind to her subjects and devoted to her husband. Navier was perfectly content to live the rest of her days as the wise empress of the Eastern Empire. That is, until her husband brought hone a mistress and demanded a divorce. ‘I accept this divorce… And i request an approval of my remarriage.’ In a shoking twist Navier remaarries another emperor and retains her title and childhood dream as empress. But just how did everything unfold? “
Am I in love with Navier? Yes.
I absolutely adore how this story was set up. The first chapter begins with the big divorce scene, followed by Navier saying that she was going to be remarrying someone else since he wants to divorce her. This sets up a picture that gets completely shattered as you read the chapters. How everything falls into place with the reason behind the divorce and the remarriage is just so well written. The art is so good and and everything is just so insanely well done.
I absolutely love Naviers character, from her regalness and devoted loyalty to her role as empress, all the way to her petty moments and times of sadness. She is truly a character that you want the best for, and I cannot image anyone not liking her. Also the story is just so capable of making you feel emotions. I’ve laughed, cried, and got angry during the course of reading this webtoon. I love how betrayed I felt when the emperor brought home his mistress. It felt like I was in Navier’s shoes!
This is such a well done webtoon and I'm so excited for Navier to get all of the good things she deserves in her new Kingdom and with her new husband.

Witch Creek Road

Genre: Horror
Chapters: 74

“A survival horror about love, acceptance, death, and revenge. And sexy flesh-eating demons. Yeah, it has those, too.”
This series seriously mind fucked me. The way that this story is set up, you don’t see the full picture until the later chapters. Season two literally blew my mind. It is also very gorey so keep that in mind if you don’t like that kind of stuff, but for me that makes it all the better. It is just so wild and crass that you can feel your heart pumping in anticipation.
They even have their own website that goes further into the lore because it’s just so wild. Also the art style is just so amazing, because it complements the story and horror theme so much. You hate most of the characters because they suck, and it is so satisfying when they are killed. Also it has it’s sad moments but I think it is a nice break from the horror so it isn’t so overwhelmingly scary.
I binged this series and I recommend reading only a few chapters a day so you don’t overload your brain.
Other then that, an amazing webtoon. Seriously, go read it, support the author, so much work goes into the story and art that it’s insane.

Dating With A Tail
Tumblr media
Genre: Romance
Chapters: 36
Status: Ongoing
-
“On the dawn of her 29th birthday, unlucky-in-love Yunha discovers a shocking family secret: she’s started growing a fox tail, the mark of an ancestral curse. She must find her fated love before her 30th birthday or she is destined to become a fox forever! Even with her new-found enchanting power to attract men using her scent, will one year be enough to break the curse before it’s too late?”
Oh my gosh this is just such a good webtoon. It has amazing art, story telling, and characters. The true love interest was there the whole time, the villain isn’t who you’d expect it to be, and the spirit who cursed her is just! Im not going to spoil it but go read this webtoon!! It is so good and deserves more love.
Also Yunha is just so relatable?? Like she put off finding the woodcutter (her fated love) for 29 years and waited last minute to find him. Homegirl is me trying to do a project for school. Also to get rid of the scent that makes men attracted to her, she just starts eating a ton of garlic and that is just so funny to me.
Also I would go to church for the priest anytime if you know what i mean ;)
-
Omniscient Reader
Tumblr media
Genre: Action
Chapters: 53
Status: Ongoing
-
“Dokja was an average office worker whose sole interest was reading his favorite web novel ‘Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse.’ But when the novel suddenly becomes reality, he is the only person who knows how the world will end. Armed with this realization, Dokja uses his understanding to change the course of the story, and the world, as he knows it.”
I cannot get over how high quality this story is. The world building is phenomenal, the art is fantastic, and the characters are very fleshed out. This deserved all the hype it has gotten so far and more.
I love the ‘mc thrown into a different reality’ trope so much. Just like with surviving romance, Dokja’s world became the story he was reading. Also a very cool aspect of the story is the level up and the fact that its like a game. Earth has turned into this show for god like creatures to watch and it follows Dokja trying to survive. I also really like that TWSA has a protagonist, but Omniscient Reader’s protagonist is not the protagonist that was in TWSA. There is just so much lore and I’ll say it again, the world building is just phenomenal.
The Ddokkaebi’s and Dokja’s interactions are also just some of my favorite moments from the story so far. And oh my goodness I would die for Lee Gilyoung. Thats it, thats the tweet. That little boy could probably kill me with his giant praying mantis and I would let him if it would make him happy.
-
Not So Shoujo Love Story
Tumblr media
Genre: Comedy
Chapters: 45
Status: Ongoing
-
“Romance super-fan Rei Chan is ready for her first boyfriend and she knows just who it’ll be: the most handsome boy in school, Hansum Ochinchin. But her plans for the perfect story are derailed when the most popular girl in class declares herself a rival… for Rei’s heart?! This is the year her not so shoujo love story begins!”
This is just such a cute webtoon. The style is very appealing and while the humor can be childish and weird sometimes, it still has made me laugh a lot. I know the humors not for everyone but just keep in mind that it does get better as the story progresses and gets more serious.
Also its a gl! I’m really unable to find good gls these days that don’t fetishize wlw relationships. Rei being painted as a mean trouble maker whos just misunderstood and Hana being the ‘perfect girl’ who only wants Rei’s attention is such a cute dynamic. They balance each other out and better each other. Also stan Rei for constantly sticking up for Hana even if she doesn’t necessarily like her in the beginning, she has very good morals and sticks to them.
Also the defying stereotypes in this webtoon? Just god-tier. Really makes you think twice when you judge someone just on first impressions alone.
-
Odd Girl Out
Tumblr media
Genre: Drama
Chapters: 264
Status: Ongoing
-
“After a successful winter break makeover, Nari is finally ready for her high school debut. But somehow, she ends up friends with the three prettiest girls in school! Follow Nari as she tries to navigate her brand new high school life surrounded by beauties.”
This story has made me cry multiple times. A lot, even. It is just such a beautiful tale of friendship and finding support in people who are unlike those around theme. It also tells a great story about how anybody can be the ‘odd girl out’. Be it the fat girl, the beautiful girl, the rich girl, or the laid back girl.
It goes so deep into its characters that you even feel bad for the minor antagonists. It really makes you feel for the characters and the reasons behind their actions. Also I know its long, believe me I binged all 260 chapters in the span of three days, but oh my god it is worth it. Also I know the art is kind of off-putting, in fact that’s kind of why I put off reading the story, but I’ve honestly grown to love it and the writing is so good that the art could be literal stick figures and it wouldn’t matter.
The story is amazing and also I just love Nari. She’s just the best.
-
Gremoryland
Tumblr media
Genre: Horror
Chapters: 67
Status: Completed
-
“Six old school friends are invited to be the first visitors of GremoryLand, a new horror theme park that promises an experience as unique as it is spooky. But once this experience starts there is no turning back, and they find themselves tested beyond what they imagines, facing their most desperate fears in order to survive.”
This is definitely one of those stories were you kind of need to turn of your brain and choose to ignore ‘plot holes’ while reading the early chapters because this story definitely gets crazy if you don’t know the ending. Believe me if you stick with it it will all make sense and the satisfaction you get from finding the ending is just so worth it.
The story is so good, and who Gremory is you would literally never suspect. When it was revealed who Gremory was and how he was able to create Gremoryland is so fucking mind boggling that you would never guess. I had to do a double take. It wasn’t like one of those random characters with a vendetta type of twists, but like one you can pick out from clues throughout the story.
Its so good and twisted and just so worth at least giving it a chance.

These were some of my favorite webtoons on the app! Of course it’s not all of them because unfortunately there is a 10 image limit. I also made this because I’ve run out of new webtoons to read and would love if you guys commented some of your own recs. I can also do a part two with other ones I liked if y’all want more recommendations. You guys can even request specific categories like Drama or Sci-Fi and I can tell you my favorite ones from that genre.
Also a reminder - if you disagree with any of my praise of these webtoons be respectful about it. At the end of the day it’s my opinion and you don’t need to be rude when disagreeing with that opinion.

Do ya have any tips on drawing blood or best colors/shades to use in a horror scene drawing?
Mmhhh- dont know if my tips will be helpful since I’m not that great of a gore/horror artist but I can try! Obviously TW for BLOOD from now on. 1- The blood
-Personally I usually paint it by splashing a good bit of color in the zones I want bloody. (Ex. Let’s say they slashed a big ol’ pack of “jam” and this is the aftermath. Note- I didn’t put the blood on the hands simply ‘cause they’re gonna be black, I usually dont put anything on black zones.)
Tumblr media
And then I work on them by removing certain spots and fixing the splotches I like best.
Tumblr media
Some notes: -Hollowing some of the stains gives off a dried off or smudged effect. Blood sticks/dries along its outline first- so the inside can easily be smudged away leaving it’s outline. I feel it gives the blood more character.
-If in large quantities or on plain surfaces, blood can drip from stains too. It gives a nice contrast to the splotches.
-Keep in mind where the blood comes from and how much of the attacker body it can reach (es. in case of my sheep, they either slashed something that exploded extremely close or they hit a whole ass artery.)
-Dont just splatter it at random, it will just look messy. Empty spaces are as important as full ones. Try to explain the story or simply what happened with the blood alone.
(Old example: The bellhop boy ghost is mostly covered by old blood (darker) and if you look closely you can see hand imprints on his jacket, sign of a victim struggling- this shows he has been a “killer” for quite a while and that he attacks while being close to the victim.  Luigi on the side instead isnt as bloody at all, it’s mostly just his hands, along with the improvvised weapon he is holding. He is new in that place and fighting at a distance, hitting with a blunt object (less probability of blood). The blood on his face comes from either his hands or mouth.)
Tumblr media
-Dont have an example ready for that but- if the wound is under clothing, the latter will form a more uniform stain.
-Have fun with it! For example, I found out that creating shapes (in my case hearts) helps me with it and makes the final product a bit more interesting.
-If you want to go realistic I’m afraid to say you’ll have to look up some precise references since irl blood is quite precise yet unpredictable in its ways,,,  2- Horror
Depends on what type of horror you want to convey. -If it’s simply gorey/murdery kinda thing you can go the “Red means scary” way, with red overlay and tones that help highlight the blood.
Tumblr media
-If it’s more of a disgusting kind of horror a yellow-green overlay helps out quite well.
Tumblr media
-You could also go the suspance and dread kinda route, with dark and muted colors, while adding very few colored accents just to highlight certain things
Tumblr media
Still- while colors and shades surely help convey feeling, it’s usually either the characters and their behaviour or the composition that truly sells the horror in my opinion. You could have the brightest and colorful palette in the world and manage to create an extremely eerie and frightening scene with them, even without any gore needed- And that’s it- hope that at least some tips will be helpful! I’m not great at this kind of things,, ^^;

Feelings on Sally Face Episode 5
Under a read more for obvious reasons, includes heavy spoilers and potentially triggering subjects.
Disclaimer: I might miss-remember some parts of the story or have missed a piece of lore that would settle minor complaints. I am however disappointed in the ending as a whole and in some of the very harmful tropes included in it. But I’m also just some dude online with an opinion, and you can stop reading at any time.
Rant under cut.
Alright ya’ll. I’ve had a couple days to digest the ending to Sally Face.  While playing, I genuinely enjoyed some elements of the game. The chapter started on a dark but nearly hopeful note. Neil and Ash were still working to bring the cult down. It seemed likely Sal would be resurrected. Todd had apparently escaped the hospital, and that had potential to be either a very very good or very very bad thing. Maple was possessed by whatever fucked up the souls of the other apartment tenants, but hey! At least her and Neil weren’t in on the cult like so many fans predicted. Unfortunately, this series has a way of getting darker and darker as it progresses.  First thing that bugged me was the lore drop about how the cult was founded.  A Native American tribe. Right. Because why wouldn’t Indigenous peoples be in a story without being part of some mystical occult backstory, portrayed as mysterious historical props who worshiped something dark and evil instead of being portrayed as human beings.
But I continued. I really enjoyed playing as Ashley and getting some insight into her character. I enjoyed the task of planting the C4 in the temple... catacomb... thing. We get to see Travis again! I was excited that a lot of us were right about him being indoctrinated but also working to fight the cult from the inside. We knew he had some good in him after all.
When Ash tries to resurrect Sal, we get even more insight into her character, and unfortunately a lot of it is “Grieving, distraught, and full of self-blame”. I want to hug her.  Sal’s spirit is apparently revived by those pyramids, and he can dimension warp. We meet Jim, or what’s left of him, and he doesn’t give a fuck about anything anymore but agrees to help Sal anyway. This is, narratively speaking, weird as hell. His entire character arc for four episodes was “Loved his family so much he sacrificed himself to save them”, and suddenly he’s just some glowy dude attached to Magic Spirit Tubes who doesn’t give half a shit. I guess it makes sense as a way to wrap up why he’s been able to drift between worlds but... if he doesn’t care about any of that anymore why help Sal? And what about Rosenberg? Is she like Jim, or do we just have to assume she’s magical because her family helped found the cult? (Explained in an easter egg later on, because this game doesn’t just drop its lore. Not even the CRUCIAL lore. You have to achievement hunt for it.) Sal can enter various doors in the House In The Void to step into alternate realities, and this was my favorite aspect of the game. Each door has a different art style, and I really liked seeing these alternate realities. Steve probably worked the hardest and longest on drawing out and coding these scenes. I genuinely applaud the man for the work put into this endeavor I’m assuming all by himself.
Meanwhile, Ash tries to unbind Larry’s soul from the tree house he died in, which doesn’t work. Did we ever find out why his body was never found? No? Ok that seems important.
After each puzzle, Sal’s body is restored a little bit at a time, but even after turning on all the pyramids and solving the mysteries behind all three doors, he can’t make it back to the “real” world. So Ashley kills herself. Or tries to. Because apparently that’s the only way to complete the ritual, and also because she feels really bad about not unbinding Larry’s soul and about not fixing Sal. Again, I want to hug her, but I have to watch her hurt herself instead, cause Steve doesn’t let us have nice things.
Okay, so this is a gorey game. We know. But one of the BIGGEST no-nos suicide prevention networks will tell you when consulting them about mental illness and suicide in media is NOT to show a graphic suicide in progress. Steve is aware a lot of his fans are A) Young teens to young adults B) Struggling with mental illness.
His main character suffers from depression and anxiety and this fact has resonated with hundreds of fans. It’s irresponsible to purposefully include a graphic suicide attempt, but he did it last chapter, showing a gunshot suicide’s aftermath, then he did it again with Ashley. Call me a wiener if you like, point out the graphic scenes from earlier in the game and call me a hypocrite for not being upset by that, but you have to admit the Spongebob-close-up-shot look to those scenes have a totally different feel. Speaking as someone who actually has a pretty thick skin, but is concerned about the fans who might be in a worse place or who could be as young as 12, that was fucked up.
Anyway, Ash’s attempt doesn’t take, because she’s struck by magic lightning, which infuses Sal’s soul into her. Now her arm is one of those stretchy sticky hands, but with bio luminescence and the ability to kick cultist ass. I actually thought this part was really cool, and was super ready to go on a cultist smacking spree. But again, we can’t have nice things and before we get to do anything badass we have to look at gruesome imagery again.
You get to see Void Larry, who is now old and a wizard or something, but first...
Surprise! Maple and Neil are dead! Not just dead, but hung up from hooks covered in blood! And naked!
Hey?? Hey Steve????? You know how they’re both POC?? And that lynching imagery is EXTREMELY NOT GOOD?!!????
“Two white people are hung up with them” YEAH? WELL WE’VE NEVER SEEN THOSE CHARACTERS BEFORE. THEY’RE JUST RANDOM PEOPLE.
I’ve seen people arguing “The white characters go through terrible things too” but it’s still really fucked up that by the end of the game, every. Single. Person of color. In the game. Has died. Gruesomely. It’s a gorey, dark, bleak game, and white characters die as well, gruesomely; but not all of them. None of them that are named are shown strung up, naked. That’s fucked up. That isn’t okay.
There are also a total of three gay characters in this game. One is Todd, who goes through the standard “bad bad stuff” the game is used to, is the white one, and he survives. One is Neil, one of the aforementioned people of color who died horribly and who only really existed to be Todd’s boyfriend and therefore a source of angst for Todd when he dies. The third is Travis, another man of color, and an abuse victim, who dies to fulfill his character arc as an abuse victim, which is also really shitty to see over and over again as an abuse survivor.
Look, I know Steve pulled a lot of inspiration from old TV shows and horror series that probably weren’t all “politically correct”. I know it’s always been kind of an edgy and dark game. I know Steve probably didn’t think about the repercussions of all his narrative choices. But I also know he actively ignored some people offering to educate him on issues he has no experience with. I know he worked hard on this game, by himself, but we as fans have paid him and waited for years and it isn’t selfish or ungrateful to be hurt and disappointed. He knows his audience is diverse, he knows a lot of us were attracted to the game because of a gender nonconforming main character, a main character who struggles with mental illness, a cast that isn’t 100% white and conventionally attractive. Of course he didn’t need to change the plot for us! It’s his game, his vision, but the least he could have done is research how to not actively hurt and alienate a good portion of us.  I don’t think anyone is bad or racist for still finding solace in the characters and in what the story was before this, I’m not attacking you personally, whoever is reading this. I, personally, still have loads of Sally Face art in my queue, I still have active role plays going on, my Sal wig is sitting like 8 feet away waiting for the next time my friends want to take cosplay pictures. I still enjoyed playing the game for the most part. Without this game I wouldn’t even know most of my current friends. It’s just really shitty how it ended like this, and a lot of people I talk to daily either feel too sick to even talk about the game anymore after seeing people like them treated like trash by the narrative or try to focus on the good things they got out of just being part of the fandom but don’t feel comfortable supporting the developer anymore.
Even if there wasn’t all these hurtful tropes packed into the game, and yes, even after unlocking the epilogue, the game just feels cold. It feels rushed, probably because of how much time went into the alternate dimension gimmick. I wish Steve had at least consulted people over the script. It felt like not only did he pour all his work into experimenting with the mixed media, he also just took whatever expectations the fans had and went somewhere completely different just to have his story be “unpredictable”. That isn’t always a good thing. Plot twists, downer endings, dark and scary imagery, all of these things can be done beautifully, but in this case it felt like he just wanted the series to end. The game didn’t subvert expectations, it fed into the harmful stereotypes and tropes all the fans were so hopeful it wouldn’t.
...On top of not making any sense unless you’re able to 100% all the puzzles. And even when you do, it feels like all the bad stuff happened for no reason. The ending doesn’t conclude anything. Even when you unlock the epilogue, all it tells you is that a third of the world has died and that the main cast haven’t accomplished much besides “Trying to help”. Sal and Todd have powers now, but that isn’t elaborated on much. Larry’s spirit is missing, if he even exists in any plane at all anymore. It doesn’t even mention what’s going on with Ash.  It just feels like nothing mattered.
